November/December 2016  The Edenbridge Directory

Dear Neighbours I can' believe it's nearly the end of the year. The days are getting shorter, the nights colder which can only mean one thing. Our big bonfire celebrations are just around the corner. I always get excited around this time of year. But more on that a little later as September and October have certainly been very busy months in the local calendar and I've really been getting out and about and enjoying as much as I can on what's on offer in the area. I'd like to say a HUGE thank you to everyone involved in the Edenbridge Motor Show in September from the members of the Eden Valley Chamber of Commerce and friends who all pitched in to make it a hugely successful event. It was the third year running and again it was a beautiful sunny day again. Even more people were recorded going into the show and it was the perfect recipe for a great day out with entertainment, stalls, so many fantastic vehicles to enjoy, and of course it's just so nice being able to go to such an event that is taking place right on our doorstep.

I've also been thoroughly impressed by one of the recent art exhibitions at the BRIDGES Centre in the High Street - a collection of work by local artist Terry Carter. It really was a stunning exhibition and I would recommend keeping your eyes open for any other exhibitions of his work. In the meantime you can enjoy taking a look on his website www.terry-carter.co.uk to see what I mean about his talent. Did you even know you there are exhibitions on at BRIDGES? It really is worth keeping an eye out at what's happening in the centre. It's open 6 mornings a week from 9.30am, Monday to Saturday, or you can keep up to date on the latest news via their facebook page @TheBridgesCentre.

My personal favourite

Foot expert Sarah Lewzey Our crossword sponsor, Options Beauty Salon, recently held an open evening where anyone could book in and receive free taster sessions on some of the treatments and products available there. It was a great event and the salon was packed with people. I popped along with my regular partner in crime Julie, to give some of the treatments a go. You can keep up to date with any of their future events by signing up to their newsletter which you can either do by popping in to the salon and leaving your address or signing up via the website,

Salon owner Anita Black

www.optionsbeauty.co.uk. They have also donated a free facial (worth £45.00) to enjoy for our next lucky crossword competition winner. If you don't know much about facials (I certainly didn't until a few months ago) then check out the feature in the centre pages. Just find the answers to the clues, fill in the board on page 56 and send your entries in. Good luck!

I mentioned in the last issue that the Bonfire Society have been busy recruiting new members to help continue with the tradition of what is the biggest event in this town and certainly the one that puts Edenbridge on the map. I can't wait for the unveiling of the celebrity effigy. But did you know that there have been bonfire parades already taking place throughout Sussex, since the start of September in fact? The various Bonfire Societies take it in turn to hold their events so they are not all on at the same time and everyone can enjoy and support each other's events too.

I enjoyed a night out as a visiting society with the Edenbridge Bonfire Society last month at the Rotherfield and Mark Cross event and had an absolutely fantastic time. Not only did I make new friends but got to understand more the social element of being part of a Society. We took a minibus from the Leisure Centre thanks to our fabulous designated driver, Stuart Parrish, who got us there and back. Quite frankly I'm surprised I never thought of doing this before. Not only did we all have a great time, we won a trophy for being the best dressed visiting society out of about 30 societies in total. If you'd like to volunteer at this year's event your help will be much appreciated - just email your contact details to volunteers@edenbridgebonfire.co.uk.

I hope you enjoy this issue and please don’t forget to mention The Edenbridge Directory if you are responding to anything you’ve seen featured in this magazine as it helps secure it’s future. The next deadline is 2 December for the January/February 2017 issue. In the meantime, I would like to take this opportunity to wish all my neighbours and advertisers a wonderful Christmas and New Year. This magazine which is now in it's 11th year would not be around if it wasn't for all of you. Thank you for keeping it going, you are all fabulous. Until next time... A journey through skincar

Thinking about skincare is not something I have personally paid much attention to over the years, other than being sure to remove make-up at the end of the day and use a moisturiser (whatever is in the cupboard) but that's been about it. I've always thought that I just have naturally bad skin - but is that really the case?

This helps the therapist tailor the individual elements of the procedures to suit my requirements. I had lots of questions throughout the process and I began to understand a little of the 'science' behind the treatment which all seemed quite logical - I just never thought of skincare in that way before.

As part of my specific treatment I also had microdermabrasion which I have to say is one of the most satisfying things I've ever felt on my face. Technically this machine "delivers liquid cooled diamond peeling with vacuum stimulation and product infusion." I call it the face vacuum - it's like cleaning your rugs with those machines where you see the water washing into the rug and all the dirty water sucked out after it's been through collecting all the dirt. It feels so soothing and satisfying, clearing all your dirty pores at such a deep level. You can also have this treatment done separately. The final part of the treatment

This is a chemical peel designed to resurface the skin with minimal recovery time. This was also to be where I would see the maximum results - scar reduction, reducing acne and leaving me with smoother, brighter skin. I remember meeting a lady a few years ago who had recently had a face peel and I remember being horrified as strings of skin were falling off her face. Luckily the BioSurface Peel works differently. It will still give you powerful results but because it is non-abbrasive it gently removes the dull surface layers and promotes the regeneration of the skin underneath. It is applied in layers, one on top of the other, waiting a few minutes in between. You can feel a tingling as it

Following the peel I was provided with an aftercare kit and strict instructions to follow. I did experience some dryness and tightness but following the instructions helped clear that up quickly.

So, has it made a difference? A resounding YES - I've never actually felt confident about my skin but now I will leave the house without any make up and not worry. I know that I will have to keep up with my new skincare regime but it's not that difficult. I know my scars are still there but the bumps are like a distant memory! You can see how much smoother my skin is now in this picture. A huge improvement to how I was at the start of this process. Bonfire Memories Following on from my request in the last issue to share your Bonfire Memories as the town gears towards it's annual celebrations on Saturday 5 November, I'd like to say thank you to Jacky Hintze for her contribution: "I moved to the town over 30 years ago but remember very well my first experience of Bonfire Night. I was hugely impressed by the bonfire parade and firework celebrations. We hoped we’d found a quiet little spot after the bustle of Croydon but couldn’t help being gripped by excitement when the whole town came alive for this pageant and were so glad we’d chosen Edenbridge as our home.

In those years the Four Elms entries shone out above the rest, largely thanks to the ingenuity and skills of float builders like Barry Stableford and Iain Baugh (and also I think Charles Laver), who went on to work for the Bonfire Society itself.

As a parent I spent several years with Four Elms team and later helped to lead floats for the children’s group Music Makers, including the One of the most memorable floats that first eye-catching ‘Windmill of Amsterdam’, and the year was ‘Nellie the Elephant’ by Four Elms Sunflower Pixies float, which amazingly won Primary School and I confess this probably the big Whitmore Cup for our little nursery influenced my choice of school for the children! school."

BIZ News... 01732 667 250

info@businessinnovationzone.co.uk

CELEBRATING 18 MONTHS Can you believe the Business Innovation Zone is already 18 months old? Where has the time gone? The project that was created to explore the possibility of working for the community as a self funding project has been a remarkable success. This success has been down to the support of the local community from both residents and businesses and for that we are all extremely grateful. Our thanks goes to Sainsbury’s who own the site for allowing us to use one of their empty properties for the past 18 months. I’d like to also give a very special thank you to Laura at The Edenbridge Directory who has shown great support since the beginning by helping us spread the news of our work through her magazine. Terry Blake works with us daily at the centre to share his expertise with the young people who come through our doors. Other thanks go to James Kemp of Well Kempt Gardens, the Eden Valley Chamber of Commerce and all the other professionals

who have given their time along our journey. We’d also like to say thank you to our community members, Mr & Mrs Day, Mr & Mrs Smith and Mr Cosmos to name but a few - it’s great you wanted to show your support on hearing about our project and join in.

OUR YOUNG PEOPLE

In the last 18 months we have seen our young people who have used the facility going on to better things - either attending college or going into employment. There are lots of young people out there who have left school and find themselves once out of education, lacking in the skills employers are looking for. When they come to visit us at the centre they are exposed to a world of work and opportunity in a different way. Our operating model has always been to source the paid work that our young people would be able to do. This gives them

businessinnovationzone.co.uk experience while earning their own money, with some of the money being put back into the project to keep it sustainable and allow others the opportunity to do the same. The idea is a simple one but the work involved has been immense.

NOW HELPING PEOPLE OF ALL AGES

Due to the success of the project we have decided to broaden our horizons and are extending our invitation to not just young people but people of any age who are looking to get back into work and need some support.

TIME IS RUNNING OUT

When we started the project we knew we only had until 31st December 2016 to create something different. This is the current date our lease at these premises runs out. We are keeping our fingers crossed that we can continue providing our valuable service and are currently waiting for news on this so please wish us luck.

FIND OUT MORE

If you would like to find out more about the facilities and services on offer here then just get in touch! Gill Humble

SPS Construction - keeping you dry whatever the weather

SPS Construction have been serving the residents and businesses of Edenbridge and the South East for the last six years. Their speciality has always been in roofing. They know how important it is to make repairs to leaking, damaged roofs quickly otherwise the harsh weather we are so used to having can easily turn a small problem into, well, a gaping hole! Their team are able to carry out small repairs such as fixing tiles and leaks all the way through to compete re-roof work for both tiled and flat roofs. SPS Construction also know the importance of making properties energy efficient, not just with regards to the roof make up but looking at other elements such as fascias and soffits which also play a big role in the protection our homes. Each new roof installed automatically comes with a 10

year guarantee and 12 month guarantees are given with all the smaller works completed. To ensure customers get the best quality of workmanship, all staff are hand-picked for their experience and expert knowledge and delivering high standards of work along with customer service. SPS ensure their core values run all the way through the company and their tradesmen regularly undergo training in health & safety and product updates to ensure they continually meet industry standards, supported by a growing team of office professionals back at base. It is through their professionalism that they have built a strong reputation for themselves and are members of regulated professional bodies associated with the industry to provide customers with assurance of quality and standards of work.

The new maintenance division employs many multi skilled workers which means complete projects can now be undertaken without having to co-ordinate different contractors yourself. They can now offer you complete projects for extensions and conversions - perhaps you’d like to convert your garage or loft into more practical space? SPS can undertake the full build from inside and out and saving you time from not having to deal with more than one company.

If you’d like to get in touch with the team for a free no obligation quotation on works or discuss a larger building project, call freephone 0800 878 6064, email info@ southernpropertysupport. com or visit their new website:
