July/August 2016  The Edenbridge Directory

Dear Neighbours, It's been another busy couple of months with so many things taking place as usual. When I saw the recent 'From Source to Tap' open day advertised in this magazine I immediately booked myself on as, apart from doing my best to use water environmentally, I'd not really put much thought into what happens before it comes through my tap. Our water provider, Sutton & East Surrey Water, organised the open day for customers at Bough Beech Reservoir and I was not disappointed. The highlight for me was going into the water tower - both at the top of the reservoir and underneath. EVE Edenbridge, our local gallery, has been putting on more exhibitions which are free to the public to visit. I thoroughly enjoyed a recent exhibition put on by the Eden Valley Artists and was not even there 5 minutes before taking a real shine to one of the exhibition works - a stunning painting by Elitta Fell titled 'Sand Lizard'. I'm pleased to say it is now hanging at home and I enjoy it every day.

Not long after I went to print with the last issue I attended a special event at the Business Innovation Zone on Fircroft Way, hosted by Gillian Humble. I'm always impressed at the amount of activity taking place at the centre and admire her for the amount she does for the local community. Our local MP Tom Tugendhat was also at the event and I couldn't resist a quick 'selfie' with him. He's always very obliging too! You can read more about what Gill and the team have been up to and all the latest initiatives on page 24. The 'Selfie' is a phenomenon born from social media and last month saw a huge social media event take place at Salomon's in Tunbridge Wells. Over 100 delegates were there and a host of social media experts sharing their knowledge with everyone. I was really honoured to be invited to be on the 'Expert Panel' with 6 other social media specialists answering questions from the audience and sharing my top tips. When I'm not working on this magazine I work with local businesses to help them with their social media and marketing. It was great to bump into some familiar faces from here in Edenbridge (Pictured Left L-R: Anita Black (Options Beauty Salon), Me, Kam Winchester (Acupuncture in Eden) and Julie Pell. I My view from the stage also took a picture when I was up on stage so you can see how busy it was. It really was a great event and you can find out more about Social Day and future events at www. socialday.co.uk Summer is here...it's not...yes it is... How many of you made it over to the Valence School Vintage Vehicle event last month? Now that was a sunny day and there were hundreds of people gathered outside the front of the school to watch a super display of cars make their way along the 'hill climb' route. The smell of fuel hung in the air, people sat on the grass enjoying their picnics, petrol heads and vintage car owners showed off their vehicles to visitors. It was a splendid afternoon out. They have another big event planned for 9th July and you can find more information about this on page 51.

Prolonged exposure to the sun causes water to evaporate from skin. The first line of defense against sun damage is using targeted products that contain both SPF and antioxidant vitamins. • Drink at least 8 glasses of plain, filtered water every day • Eat water-rich fruits & vegetables: watermelon, apples, grapes, broccoli and blueberries to boost hydration • Use a minimum of SPF15 daily - even on overcast days • Avoid oily, blackhead causing sunscreens

My signature treatment is Indian Head Massage. I opted to qualify in Indian Head Massage early on in my career as I was leaning towards the more holistic treatments and services that I could provide as a beauty therapist. I am thrilled that I can now bring

Stangrove Park was recently transformed by the local Rotary Club of Edenbridge & Westerham for the Family Fun Day and Dog Show. There were plenty of stalls lining the grounds from local businesses, community groups and charities as well as entertainment for the children. More than anything were dogs the eager participants of the Dog Show (or maybe that should be the eager owners). There may have been grey skies over Edenbridge but the rain stayed away and the temperature was very mild indeed. And finally...do you want to be in with a chance of winning a bottle of champagne? Our crossword sponsor is The Barrister Broker and he is giving a bottle of fizz to the winner of the prize crossword which you can find on page 48. Complete the puzzle, send in your answers and you'll be entered into the draw. Please note that age restrictions do apply. I hope you enjoy this issue and please don’t forget to mention The Edenbridge Directory if you are responding to anything you’ve seen featured in this magazine as it helps secure it’s future. 3 good reasons to advertise in The Edenbridge Directory 1) It works - Did you know that there are advertisers who have been continuously advertising in the magazine since it first started? That's more than 10 years. 2) You won't get better coverage - Our posties know the letterboxes throughout the area better than anyone. That's why Royal Mail are booked to deliver the magazine. 6,300 copies going out each issue. If you're looking to build your local customer base then The Edenbridge Directory will be reaching your potential new customers. 3) It's represents excellent value - The smallest advert costs just £25.00 per issue (or less if you take out a package booking). There's no VAT on the price either - I'm a small business like so many of the advertisers who appear in this magazine. If you'd like to find out more then please give me, Laura, a call or send me an email. I look forward to hearing from you.

Kent Search & Rescue - helping to find missing vulnerable persons across Kent members do not receive any expenses or financial benefit. The charity is funded entirely from public donations.

I first came across Kent Search & Rescue (KSAR) when I attended a Forget-me-not Café at the BRIDGES Centre earlier in the year. Steve Holman, Community Liaison for the charity had been invited to give a presentation at the café about the services of this fabulous Kent-based charity. KSAR are a registered charity providing teams of qualified search technicians called upon to search for vulnerable missing persons, people who under normal circumstances may not be able to look after themselves; this includes children, elderly people with dementia/alzheimer's or people with learning disabilities. The team also are called upon to search for people who are depressed or suicidal. Every one of their members is a volunteer, carrying out a number of varying roles within the organisation from search technicians to administrative roles. This means that 100% of all the money they raise goes towards vital equipment and operational costs and

34

They work closely with Kent Police, local authority and other emergency services, responding to 999 calls only. KSAR members make themselves available 24 hours a Day, 7 Days a Week and 365 Days a Year.

techniques, evidence handling and crime preservation and much more. During this time you would also be expected to attend bi-weekly training nights which take place on a Monday between 7.30pm and 10pm.

Become a KSAR volunteer Operational search members need to be 18 years old or above and be fit enough to carry out the duties of a search team member. Maybe you enjoy long walks, cycling or swimming - you would be ideal! Age is not a barrier to joining as non-operational roles within the organisation also need to be managed such as publicity, fund raising and logistical support. You will be invited along to an induction evening where members will tell you about what they do, why they do it and how you can become a member. As you can imagine, the training does take some commitment. As a search technician you would be required to attend a training course over 3 separate weekends in order to learn the various search techniques, medical safety, navigation

You might want to get your dog involved and train as a search dog handler. Air scenting dog teams are trained to NSARDA standards and called upon with the search for missing people. You and your dog will learn valuable search techniques and must be able to commit to at least 2 days training per month with the dog team in addition to the general training requirements. If you would like to find out more, contact KSAR on: 01233 800 165 info@ksar.co.uk | www.ksar.co.uk @K_S_A_R @KentSearchandRescue KSAR Training Officer Stuart Kenny, seach dog Sky and Steve Holman were studio guests on The Community Show

NEW Shop Safe, Stay Safe Scheme

community.safety@sevenoaks. gov.uk Residents who sign up can also benefit from a free home safety check from Kent Fire & Rescue Service. The scheme has been introduced as part of the Council's health strategy to help people to live independent lives for as long as possible.

A new scheme to help vulnerable people and people living with dementia to shop safely has been launched. Businesses are encouraged to join the scheme and display a Shop Safe, Stay Safe sign advising people that they can go into the shop and receive help if they need it. Residents who sign up provide

details of a family member, friend or carer to contact in the event of an emergency. They are also given a keyring with a unique code and if they need help, shop workers can call Sevenoaks District Council with the unique code and the Council will call their emergency contact. The uplifting power of singing and music… and a massed chorus finale with standing ovation! by Sylvie Bee

"A good few weeks have passed since our Three Counties Community Choir Festival World Tour at Edenbridge Parish Church on Saturday 14th May, yet we, humble, enthusiastic amateur singers are still humming. The event was organised by local ladies’ choir, A Cappella, and was performed by over a hundred singers representing 7 Choirs from surrounding counties. The choirs came from a range of backgrounds but all share a common belief that singing can be enjoyed by everyone and that high quality can be achieved when people have the chance to express themselves in a supportive group. As the person chosen to orchestrate the fund raising side of this Festival for Breast Cancer Now, one thing became quite clear to me and to my fellow singers: singing has a tremendous uplifting power on people and certainly promotes unprecedented generosity.

Whilst we thank also the generous internet donors, it is the audience who contributed the bulk of the amazing £1,300 total raised for Breast Cancer Now. The audience that filled the Church, despite other community events and the Eurovision song contest the same evening. The audience, including the 100+ performers, who home baked those lovely pink cakes or paid for them very generously at the interval and afterwards. The audience that sang with us when prompted and cheered us with profusion as we sang our hearts out. The entry was by donation at the door, yet the buckets soon filled up on the way in and on the way out. Were we really that good?

Sylvie Bee ready to fill her buckets

A Cappella started out as a small group singing for family services in Church and now have regular Christmas bookings at Ightham Mote and Hever Castle. If you would like to book us for a private or community function, please contact Jacky Hintze on 01732 503 606 or via email to jacky.hintze@outlook.com."

The Barrister Broker - reducing your legal costs

I’m always impressed by the amount that takes place in our town and I recently went along to The Eve Galley on Fircroft Way to view an exhibition by the Eden Valley Artists – a group of local artists and sculptors… If you’ve not been to the gallery before it’s definitely worth a visit – the exhibitions change frequently so there’s always lots of different works to enjoy. But back to the work of The Barrister Broker and how I help people significantly reduce their legal costs… I regularly receive enquiries from people who either have or have had a solicitor acting for them but who have become fed up with the legal process because of a lack of progress, increasing costs or no end in sight. By this point they are becoming emotionally exhausted and feeling at a loss as to how things are going to end. They then start looking for alternative solutions which is where I come in. As an example, I was contacted by a member of the public

going through a divorce who had been using a family law solicitor (not local) from the very beginning. After two years there was no end in sight and court proceedings hadn’t been started yet the solicitor’s bill was in excess of £10,000. Not surprising that the client was looking for an alternative legal solution.

If you are already involved in a case and have a court hearing coming up, whether an initial hearing or the final hearing itself, I cannot emphasise enough the need to be represented by an experienced advocate who can make all the difference to the outcome. This is where Barristers excel because they are specially trained in the art of court-room If you are contemplating using advocacy. They argue cases a legal advisor, avoid being before judges, present legal enticed by the initial ‘free arguments and are adept in consultation’ only to regret cross-examination. it later when that hourly rate starts to impact. Also, ask questions two separate lawyers. of the person you are dealing So, if you need legal advice or with – is the legal advisor a court representation, or if you qualified solicitor?
