Editor’s Note

July/August 2014  The Edenbridge Directory

Dear Neighbours, How many of you made it to the Edenbridge Fun Day last month? For the first time in recent years I wasn’t involved in the organisation of this event so I John Surtees OBE in 1964 winning Ferrari actually had the chance to see everything that was going on throughout the day. It was a shame about the drizzle that barely let up but it was great to see many of you and many visitors come to our town. I have posted pictures and video links of some of the action to the Edenbridge Directory Facebook and Google+ pages as there is just not enough room to print them here. Thank you to the Chamber of Commerce, Bonfire Society, Rotary Club and everyone else who was involved.

You might notice that there has been a slight change to the layout of the magazine - I have merged the old Sports Page into the Clubs & Organisations Pages so this is where you’ll now find all the local sports information. My community feature this time has a sporting theme as I joined in with Edenbridge Cricket Club for my first ever go at cricket. I used to think it was a dull game but now that I understand it a bit better I think it’s actually quite good. I also visited the rugby club last month for their big day and was delighted to see a girls team playing a match as part of the celebrations. We’ve been promised a glorious 6 weeks of sunshine this summer so what better to accompany a sunny evening than enjoying a glass of cool bubbly in the garden - The Barrister Broker is donating a bottle of Champagne to the lucky winner of the Prize Crossword (age restrictions apply) which he will deliver to you personally. One of the positions I have recently taken up is as Networking Co-ordinator for the Eden Valley Chamber of Commerce. We’ve had some cracking events already this year, the last a BBQ at WBD Accountants with Larmars Catering providing food. If you’re a local business and would like to come to a future event then email me and I will add you to my mailing list. As usual, don’t forget to mention The Edenbridge Directory if you are responding to anything you’ve seen featured in this magazine as it helps secure it’s future. The next deadline for content and advertising requests is Friday 1st August for the September/October 2014 issue.

Eden Nursery School - “It’s where we send our children”

there are many indoor Nursery Owners Hannah & Beth activities organised. The older children are given more structured activities to engage in such as learning about healthy eating, letter of the day and learning Some of the Eden Nursery School staff to cross the road safely. Future plans for the On 6th January this year, Beth Silcox children include French and Dance lessons. from Edenbridge and friend Hannah The Eden Nursery School currently has around Heath from Westerham made one of 50 children (between 2 and 5 years) enrolled their dreams come true when they although each session will only go up to a opened the doors at the new Eden maximum of 30 children. Hannah says, “Even Nursery School based at the WI Hall though according to Ofsted we can take more on, with our 10 members of staff we would in Edenbridge. Having both trained as Norland Nannies, rather keep the staff to child ratio higher for the completing the prestigious Norland Diploma benefit of both the children and our staff.” at Norland College, they both had careers as private nannies before starting their own families. Beth had also worked in the NHS along side Health Visitors and dealing with families and their children.

Beth and Hannah also believe that keeping a good, direct relationship with parents is vital. If a child has done something seen as special to their qualities then the parents are emailed personally to share in the enjoyment and keep track of their child’s developments. They see this as particularly important for parents who may have a carer for their child taking them to the nursery school so they themselves don’t have that direct contact with staff. They also have a facebook page (Eden Nursery School) where parents can log in to see what activities have been taking place during the day.

It was during her last maternity leave that Beth, mother of four, saw the nursery at the WI Hall come up for sale. She knew it was the right time for her and Hannah to take it on and make their dream of owning a nursery into a reality. Their goal was to create a nursery they would want to send their own children to (which they have done) and the WI Hall allows such flexibility with the amount of space they have available Beth and Hannah’s passion is clearly evident when you speak to them about what they’ve both indoors and outdoors. The space inside the hall is perfect for catering achieved to date and with their fully engaged to the needs of individual children, creating staff they have gained an amazing reputation in zones for the different age groups to learn what they have achieved so far. and play in, and of course on rainy days providing plenty of space for the children to run around. As well as outdoor activities taking place (I’ve been told the ‘mud kitchen’ is a firm favourite with the children)

The WI Hall is transformed every term-time morning

Edenbridge Cricket Club - Here come the girls! The picturesque setting of Blossoms Park, just south of Edenbridge Hospital, is the home of Edenbridge Cricket Club, established in 1868. Personally I’ve never been able to understand the game of cricket so perhaps a morning at the club might help me learn a few things. I was blessed with beautiful sunshine on the Saturday morning I went along - a perfect day for cricket! My first point of call was to meet with Jonathan Watts, Jonathan Woodman and Dominic Jordan from the club committee to find out more about the club and what they’ve got going on.

Saturday mornings are when the junior players meet. The under 9s play non-league cricket and under 11s and above all play league fixtures. There are currently around 50 junior members and so far the under 13s side have achieved a 90% success rate with winning their matches! In the past the junior sides have always been mixed but now the club are looking to run more girls only sides. Since the England Women’s Team came home with the Ashes the sport has been growing even more among girls and the club are keen to cater to demand. Due to the size of this club, any juniors who show great potential are encouraged to join one of the other bigger clubs nearby where their talent can be better nurtured as Edenbridge is and will continue to be run as a village club. For adults, the club has two Saturday league teams and two Sunday friendly teams. They are happy to take people on from all levels, placing them in the most appropriate team according to their abilities.

throughout the year I managed to hit the ball! to raise funds and the club also relies on grants from other organisations as well as sponsorship from local businesses. This year they have been grateful for the support from The Old Eden, Bradford Electrical, Edenbridge Accident Repair, Harwoods Edenbridge and FoxWood Maclean. The main priority is to update the practice nets and then start to update the pavilion. So, with the sun still beating down and my ‘coffee break’ over it was time for me to head out onto the field for my cricketing debut, joining in with the U9s and U11s who were out on the pitch. My first position was to field and I was fortunate enough to be next to one of the club’s star players, Anna Webb, who gave me lots of great tips. It was only the previous week that she and teammate Lottie Squires had led the U11s to victory with a match winning partnership. Next position was bowler and I was actually starting to have real fun, keeping reasonable control of my ball throwing. The grand finale came when I was sent to the clubhouse to get padded out for my turn to bat. I found walking in the leg pads hard work but when the sound of the leather ball made that cracking noise against the middle of my bat and I heard the cry of ‘RUN Laura’ - I charged up the wicket as though my life depended on it. Thanks so much to all the players for such an enjoyable morning and I now even know a few cricket rules too!

You can find more information about the club including joining and events, at www. As with all the local clubs and organisations, edenbridge.hitscricket.co.uk or contact Darryl fundraising is key to Edenbridge Cricket Club’s Easton on 07973 728 593 for juniors or Jon future. There are a number of events organised Woodman on 07740 075 540 for seniors.

Come and join the Marlings Morris Dancers Marlings Morris are based in Edenbridge and dance traditional North West Clog dances. Of the many different types of morris dancing, North-West Clog is one of the more spectacular, giving a colourful and noisy display. The troop dance out during the summer months at various pubs in Surrey, Sussex and Kent and also at festivals and have an excellent band of musicians. They are keen to keep the tradition of English Folk dance alive and are looking to recruit new dancers. Although their dance side is ladies only, the band is open to both gentlemen and ladies. Morris Dancing is lots of fun and easy to learn. They are a friendly side and you will be made very welcome whether you are a dancer or a musician. Practice is every Monday evening from September to May, at The Eden Centre, Four Elms Road, Edenbridge. Contact Gill on 07722 017 404 or 01883 712 224 or have a look at the website at marlingsmorris. co.uk. Why not come along and have a go!

Swim with the Piranhas Edenbridge Piranhas was established in 1994 and today has more than 100 members - most of whom come from the town and villages around our base at Edenbridge Leisure Centre.

This small friendly club has swimmers ranging in age from six to their mid- twenties and is affiliated to the Amateur Swimming Association’s South East Region. The club prides itself on giving every one of it’s members the best instruction and chance to improve their swimming and fitness in a safe and happy environment. Every child has the opportunity to compete if they wish - whether within the club itself at their annual championships or as part of a team representing Edenbridge. The club belongs to three leagues: • The Octopus League - for novice competitors of varying abilities and swimmers looking for gala experience. Time limits are set so that the eight competing clubs do not necessarily select their fastest swimmers. • The Kent League - a group of six clubs who regularly compete with swimmers up to the age of 13. • The National Speedo League - where we select our strongest team to compete against some of the region’s top clubs. We also compete in and organise friendly galas against other local clubs, offering children the chance to swim in open meets to gain times for entry to the Kent County or Regional Championships. The club are always seeking more funds to replace swim equipment, increase swim time, and also provide transport for the teams to attend galas and competitions and would be grateful for any donations to help their youngsters keep fit, healthy and enjoy a good social life! The Barrister Broker - reducing your legal costs I’ve now been living in the area for over a year and never fail to be amazed by this town. My most recent discovery has been the TopFoto Gallery (corner of Station Road and Fircroft Way) when my wife took me to the opening of the John Surtees exhibition. I never knew it existed and it’s only a few hundred yards from my front door. I thoroughly recommend a visit there and the exhibitions change on a frequent basis. But back to work and to the world of The Barrister Broker and how I will significantly reduce your legal costs…

Each month I receive calls from people who either have or have had a solicitor acting for them but who have become disillusioned with the legal process because of a lack of progress, increasing legal costs and no end in sight. By this point they are becoming emotionally exhausted, angry with the legal profession and feeling at a loss as to how they can regain control of the situation and their lives. So they start looking for alternative solutions and come to me.

John Surtees’ Manx Norton

As an example, I was contacted by a member of the public who is going through a divorce and has been using a family law solicitor (not local) from the outset. Two years on there is no end in sight, no court application issued for financial remedies yet the solicitor’s fees come to more than £10,000. This is an example of how “hourly rate” billing can spiral out of control. This is not a good experience for the client and cannot be said to represent value for money.

that hourly rate starts to pinch… ouch! If you are getting a “fixed fee” service, this will help you to budget but make sure you know exactly what you are getting for your fixed fee. Also, ask questions of the person you are dealing with – Is the legal advisor a qualified solicitor or a legal executive? Will they do the work themselves or will it be done by a trainee? What level of experience does the legal advisor have dealing with contested matters? Will they represent you at court? If not, why not? If they will, do they have sufficient trial experience?… etc. Don’t be afraid to ask questions, after all, you are putting your future and investing your money in this person’s hands! If you are involved in existing proceedings and you have a court hearing coming up, whether an interim hearing or the final hearing or trial itself, make sure you are represented by someone who knows what they are doing. This is where Barristers excel as they are the court room specialists trained in the art of advocacy. They represent clients before courts and tribunals, they argue your case before judges, they present legal arguments and are adept in crossexamination - uncovering the truth layer by layer – like peeling an orange! These are just some of the intricate skills of Barristers. Also, bear in mind that if you have a solicitor acting for you who instructs a Barrister to represent you at court, you are then paying for two separate lawyers, therefore paying TWICE! So, if you need legal advice or court representation, or if you already have a legal advisor acting for you but you are having second thoughts about them for whatever reason, give me a ring on 01732 866 562 or 07971 285 796 and let’s have a chat in confidence to establish whether I will be able to arrange a Barrister to assist you. As I am local I’m also happy to meet face-to-face. Remember, it costs nothing to speak to me but I could end up saving you thousands!

If you are contemplating using a legal advisor do not be hoodwinked by offers of “free consultations”. Avoid being enticed by the fat carrot only to regret it later down the line when
