The Edenbridge Magazine • January/February 2017

Note from the Editor... Dear Neighbours, Happy New Year! I hope you’ve managed to enjoy the festive season as much as possible and are now looking forward to what 2017 has in store. So, now you’ve reached this far into the magazine you will probably have noticed a few adjustments to the look and feel of the publication, along with a name change. But that’s it - it’s still me, Laura Burton-Lawrence, producing the magazine. I thought that after more than 11 years of publishing The Edenbridge Directory I would just give it a bit of a make-over. I must admit that when working on it this time around I almost felt like I was in a new job! I’d like to thank Elliot at DemonSkinz (Crowborough) for redesigning my logos - I’m so pleased with the end results. Now all my products (The Crowborough Magazine, The Edenbridge Magazine and The Community Radio Show) look like members of the same family. It’s been a great exercise and I’ve thoroughly enjoyed working on the new layout. Of course I always love hearing from you and receiving your feedback on the magazine so please do let me have your thoughts. So, as well as redesigning my magazines, I had a very interesting end to 2016. Joining the Bonfire Society towards the end of the summer was an excellent decision on my part. Not only have I moved into another social circle (they do have a brilliant social element) and made fantastic friends already, it gave me the confidence to try out new things in my role on the committee helping out with social media. On the night itself I “streamed” the entire parade and fireworks display over the Society’s Facebook page and there were hundred’s of people viewing it live, not just from Edenbridge but all over the world! It was amazing to read people’s comments during the live broadcasts. Views to date of the videos have reached over 50,000. If you missed the BIG event then you can watch the Donald Trump and Hilary Clinton videos on the Facebook page @EdenbridgeBonfireSociety. made it to the Bonfire Field

There was plenty going on in our High Street towards the end of the year. Some of our traders got together to put on a late night shopping Hair for Men Barbers event for those residents who work outside of the area. It was a last minute idea and I’ve been told that next year they will give everyone more notice. The French Market was buzzing and was back by popular demand. A big thanks to the Eden Valley Chamber of Commerce for organising this event. I’ve heard that they are hoping to get the market back in the high street around June time so do watch this space. A reasonably new campaign to help support small, local businesses is Small Business Saturday - a non-political, noncommercial campaign to encourage people to support small

Although it is focussed on the first Saturday in December each year, it hopes to encourage people to remember these businesses all year round and not just in the run up to Christmas for the main Small Business Saturday event. As always, please do mention ‘The Edenbridge Magazine’ if you are responding to anything you’ve seen in this publication as it helps to secure it’s future. Wishing you all a wonderful 2017. The Edenbridge Magazine • January/February 2017

Marsh Green Turns Silver “Members of St John’s URC Marsh Green have long been concerned with issues of justice and peace, and being good stewards of the planet is a natural extension of this. One of St John’s strongest motivations for its eco activities is the children (Marsh Green is a ‘Child Friendly Church’). Every time we baptise a new baby we are reminded of the state of the planet on which they (and children the world over) must live; they are the ones who are going to ‘inherit the earth’ however damaged it is! So in 2013 the church became an Ecocongregation. In 2016 we became involved in the new scheme of Eco Church which allows you to apply for different levels. We heard recently (24th November 2016) that the church has been awarded the silver level, gained in each of the 5 sections: • Worship and teaching • Buildings • Land • Community and global engagement • Lifestyle

There are compost bins, a recycling centre, double or secondary glazed windows, insulation (where possible), energy saving bulbs and Fairtrade supplies in the kitchen. Less obvious but equally important are ethical banking, using green energy suppliers, involvement of the children, environmental services and film evenings, and green ‘spots’ in the newsletter! The church’s environmental work is a continuous process. The church will hope to be ready to ‘go for gold’ in a year or so, not in order to win an award (though that is quite nice!) but because moving forward is essential if we are to play our part in passing on a world to our children that is fit to live in. Our Victorian forbears would see a number of differences in their Presbyterian Chapel. It is hoped they would approve.”

The most visible evidence of our ecocredentials are such things as the rows of For more information contact Gill Musgrove photovoltaic panels high up on the slate roof at musgroves@tom78.plus.com or on 01732 which mean that the church is a net exporter of 865138 electricity, and the rainwater tank that flushes the toilets and another that waters the plants. BIZ News... 01732 667 250

info@businessinnovationzone.co.uk

HAPPY NEW YEAR! Things were a bit touch and go for the BIZ Centre towards the end of 2016 but following a meeting with the new owners we are delighted to announce that we have been given at least a 6 months extension to operate out of our premises on Fircroft Way. Meeting the new owners also gave us an opportunity to showcase the work we have done so far to help support young people back into work so with the lease extension we will be able to help more during the first half of 2017 at least.

OUR WORKSHOP Following a request from a local business to help them assemble parts of their product, we have turned our main area into a small assembly factory. You just never know what you can achieve until given an opportunity.

WE NEED YOU! As with every big project that comes our way, we are now looking for a Workshop Assistant to support us in meeting the demanding production requirements and

also for anyone looking for an apprenticeship working in an office with varied tasks and learning various business skills which will be invaluable in helping them move into a great career.

EDEN VALLEY CHAMBER OF COMMERCE HQ Our working relationship with the local chamber of commerce has gone from strength to strength this year. We provide administrative support for the day-to-day running of the Chamber and act as the postal headquarters for the organisation. Our in-house workshop

YES WE STILL DO eBAY One of the initial projects we started up when we first opened was our eBay service where we can sell your items on eBay for a fee or, as has been the case on many occasions, simply donate your items to us which we will then sell and put the full amount received towards the cost of running our facility. Our resident eBay expert Bevan is a whiz at getting your items sold. He will take the pictures, upload it to the selling website

If you want to know more about the Chamber you can visit their website: www.edenvalleychamber.org.uk

FIND OUT MORE If you would like to know more about the facilities and services on offer at the BIZ Centre, do please give us a ring, or better still, pop in and say hello!
