Editor’s Note

September/October 2016  The Edenbridge Directory

Dear Neighbours, The summer holidays are coming to an end and a new term is just about to start for many of the younger residents of Edenbridge. In the background there has been much beavering away going on as the various committees and organisations are planning their next events. The first big event in the September calendar is the Edenbridge Motor Show at Gabriel's Showground. This will now be the third year it will be running and the Eden Valley Chamber of Commerce (and friends) who organise the event have been holding regular meetings throughout the summer to make sure that this year's event will be another huge success.

Of course November will see the Edenbridge Bonfire Extravaganza taking place in the town and recreation ground - the BIGGEST event in Edenbridge. After a call out to the community for more support to help with the event, the Bonfire Society have got new members on board to make this year's event another great success. You can keep up-to-date with all the news surrounding our bonfire night via the dedicated Facebook page @EdenbridgeBonfire. Who will be the celebrity effigy to go up in flames? We'll all have to wait and see. On the bonfire theme, The Edenbridge Directory is wanting to hear about your memories of Bonfire Night in Edenbridge. Turn to page 36 of this issue to find out more. Shortly after going to print with the last issue I went along to the Forge Singers performance of 'West End Wish List'. It was another super evening of entertainment with music and song selected from such a broad range of West End musicals. I know I always say it but I love not having to travel far to enjoy a super evening out. Well done to everyone who was involved in the production. Everything from costumes, choreography, sound and lighting was superb! Look out for their next performance which I think will announced in the next issue!

I would like to thank our prize crossword sponsor, Monkey Puzzle Day Nurseries, who are opening their new nursery soon in the High Street, and they have donated a very nice brand new wooden abacus to the lucky winner. Turn to page 48 to complete the crossword and send your entry in. Good luck! As well as having great fun over the last few months I've also had heartache as I received that dreaded call on a Saturday morning from a local vet to say that my cat Milo was with them but unfortunately he had passed away. If you've been reading the directory for any length of time you may recall that 3 years ago little Milo went missing and even after putting his picture out everywhere, it wasn't until 11 months later than he was found following a road accident. few months he recovered and I was delighted to be reunited with him again. He was certainly the apple of my eye and I treasured all our moments together. I would like to thank the youngsters who found him outside The Eden Centre towards the end of July and took him to nearby Edenbridge Veterinary Clinic in Skinners Lane. Even though it was a sad end to his young life I'm glad I found out quickly rather than months of heartache waiting for his return. It makes me think about the importance of micro-chipping our beloved animals so we can be reunited if they are missing or just to be informed of sad news about them to put our minds at rest. RIP Milo - you were such a pleasure to have in my life. I hope you enjoy this issue and please don’t forget to mention The Edenbridge Directory if you are responding to anything you’ve seen featured in this magazine as it helps secure it’s future. The next deadline is 30 September for the November/ December issue. Until next time... 3 good reasons to advertise in The Edenbridge Directory 1) It works - Did you know that there are advertisers who have been continuously advertising in the magazine since it first started? That's more than 10 years. 2) You won't get better coverage - Our posties know the letterboxes throughout the area better than anyone. That's why Royal Mail are booked to deliver the magazine. 6,300 copies going out each issue. If you're looking to build your local customer base then The Edenbridge Directory will be reaching your potential new customers. 3) It's represents excellent value - The smallest advert costs just £25.00 per issue (or less if you take out a package booking). There's no VAT on the price either - I'm a small business like so many of the advertisers who appear in this magazine. If you'd like to find out more then please give me, Laura, a call or send me an email. I look forward to hearing from you.

Latest news from BRIDGES by Liz Martin-Lawrence

I am a Mum to 3 primary school aged children and have lived in Edenbridge with my husband Justin for almost 12 years. I knew nothing about Edenbridge before moving here and I also knew no one. My husband and I were keen to be part of the community and at the time ran an electronics company in Westerham. As a local businessman, Justin joined the local Chamber of Commerce. At the time I was working as a freelance garden designer but longed to meet local people, so I joined the ‘Homeworkers Group’. This was my first real opportunity to meet people and make friends - all the other members of this group are still my friends today. Justin and I were lucky to welcome our twins William and Charlotte in to the world in August 2007, and with their arrival our lives in the community broadened! I was invited to a post-natal group

at Edenbridge Hospital, which was so helpful and supportive. We then welcomed Thomas into our family in February 2010! With two 2-year-olds and a new baby I relied on local baby and toddler groups and other facilities in the town such as the leisure centre, the Children’s Centre and The BRIDGES Centre. I spent many mornings with my growing brood in BRIDGES, grateful for their children’s area and for the welcoming volunteers who were so tolerant of my requests for toast and beans ‘but no butter’, ‘can I have a STRONG cup of tea’ and ‘can the children’s squash be weaker’, all of which was served with a smile. I often took friends from other local areas to BRIDGES and many of them would comment that they wished they had ‘something like this’ in their own town. In recent years my Mum and I would go to BRIDGES frequently for lunch, it’s always something she likes to do when she stays

with us. My children are all now in school and although we still have a small business in Edenbridge, I now have more time on my hands and am very happy to be the new Assistant Manager at the BRIDGES Centre. I have lots of ideas for the future: I’d like to re-invigorate the children’s area and get the Mum’s and pre-schoolers to use the centre like I used to. I have a strong IT background and I want to use the internet and social media to reach out to potential volunteers and to promote all the good work that BRIDGES does within our community. If you've not been to BRIDGES before then I urge you to pop in and see for yourself the wonderful facilites and delicious refreshments. You'll also find BRIDGES on social media: @TheBridgesCentre @TheBridgesCtr

 Late Summer Beauty Tip 

The summer sun, chlorine and salt water will have taken a toll on your skin. Get back into your routine using products containing repairing ingredients to nourish and hydrate.

• Ditch the soap and use a gentle cleanser. • Choose nourishing argan oil in night creams. • Exfoliate gently with rice bran to brighten your skin. • Use non-clogging oil free SPF protection in the daytime. • Enjoy a great skin care treatment in the salon.

My signature treatment focuses on massage. My Beauty Therapy career started in a spa where our main treatment was massage so very early on I was able to practice and perfect my massage techniques. Working at Options Beauty I have noticed many clients complain

Wanted: Your Edenbridge Bonfire Memories

With Bonfire Night fast approaching, this year the big Bonfire Extravaganza takes place on Saturday 5 November, The Edenbridge Directory would like to hear from you, the readers, and the memories you have from the biggest event in Edenbridge. I'll pick out my favourite stories to be published in the next issue of the directory and post the other memories on the website. I remember the first evening I was ever in Edenbridge - I had just put down a deposit on a rental property in St John's Way and wanted to see what the town was like during the evening. Well, what a big surprise I had when I saw the high street packed with people and a torch light procession making it's way through town. This is certainly not something I had ever seen and I couldn't believe my eyes. I remember telling my London friends about the event and how strange it seemed at first. Now I've learned so much more about the history of Bonfire in Edenbridge, about the wonderful committee who spend so much time to put it on and the real sense of community spirit surrounding the event as the many procession floats and costumes are prepared in the run up to the big day. Please email your Bonfire Memories to laura@edenbridgedirectory.co.uk or send them in by post to PO Box 142, Edenbridge, TN8 9AQ. I can't wait to hear from you. Pictured right: Me in the 2012 parade - I enjoyed every minute of the experience!
