News from the Community Grant money fixes Scout HQ “1st Crowborough Scout Group’s Headquarters on Whitehill Road are now watertight thanks to a grant of £6,000 from Wealden District Council’s Community Grants Programme towards a wider refurbishment program that has seen the hall much improved over recent months. The old concrete finlock guttering which retained water and allowed it to pass into the hall has now been replaced with purpose made aluminium guttering that has added protection against tree pines and other debris.

Group Scout Leader Robin Carmichael said “The Hall is central to our activities; there are at least ten sessions held here every week. The new gutters mean that all the hard work and provision for the young people of the town that goes on here can continue way into the future. Anyone interested in volunteering to support Scouting in Crowborough, please contact us via our website www.1stcrowborough.org.uk.” - Pete Heaton, Group Secretary 1st Crowborough Scouts

Note from the Editor... Dear Readers, What an action packed couple of months it’s been but summer is always a time when there’s plenty going on every weekend. After signing off for print with the last issue I hopped on a plane to Croatia to experience my very first sailing holiday, on a flotilla with Nautilus Yachting. It was my first holiday in about six years so I was very excited indeed. It really was a great way to explore the Croatian coastline and especially when we motored upriver to visit the Krka National Park with their breath taking waterfalls. So, why am I sharing my holiday? Okay, I couldn’t wrangle one as a prize in this issue’s crossword but Nautilus Yachting have offered the lucky winner 4 tickets to the London Boat Show which takes place from 10th - 14th January 2018. A great day out and you’ll be able to meet the Nautilus team there as well. I was also extremely proud to have been nominated for the ‘Best Business in the Community’ at the annual Community & Voluntary Awards run by Sevenoaks District Council for all the work I do in supporting the community with my publications as well as my radio show. I might not have won the category but it was lovely to have been nominated and to receive a framed certificate in recognition of my achievements. I also got to meet Len Goodman who was presenting some of the awards and what an entertaining chap he is. Despite the not so great weather of more recent times, we at least were blessed with sunshine at the Summer Fair at the beginning of July - an event I always enjoy attending as I get to meet many contributors to the magazine and make many new connections too. I have some interesting features booked in over the next few issues. Being an animal lover, especially cats, it was good to meet Louise Froude in person who was on the Streetkatz Rescue stand, a charity helping homeless and abandoned cats and kittens. You can find out more at www.streetkatzrescue.com. Cllr George Moss also returned from his mammoth adventures which saw him walking 7 marathons in 7 days raising funds for the National Autistic Society. His marathon adventures finished at the summer fair. You can find out more about his adventures and also make a 10 | www.crowborough-magazine.co.uk • info@crowborough-magazine.co.uk • 01732 864 878

The Crowborough Magazine • September/October 2017 donation via his website - www.walkabouts-with-george. co.uk. Well done George! Don’t forget that Bonfire season is nearly upon us. It may seem a little early for it to start in September but with so many societies across Sussex, they all take it in turns Cllr George Moss with Cllr Ron Reed to have their processions and big firework displays. The season actually starts on Saturday 2nd September with the first being held in Uckfield so Crowborough is the second one on the Bonfire calendar. If you’re new to the area then it really is a must to go along to. The entire town gets involved and it’s a great event for all the family to enjoy. It always give me great pleasure to meet you, the readers of this magazine, and when I dropped over the prize to the winner from the last issue, Ted Fletcher, I stayed to have a chat and a cup of coffee. I’m very glad that even after more than 10 years this magazine has continued to be very well received in the area. Don’t forget, all the community features and news pages are free for local charities and organisations to appear in so if I haven’t yet come across you and your group, please do get in touch with me. As always, please do mention ‘The Crowborough Magazine’ if you are responding to anything you’ve seen in this publication as it helps to secure it’s future. Until next time....

Stone Ness Walled Garden Blink and you might miss the entrance to this wonderful, peaceful retreat located on the A264 in Ashurst near Langton Green. Luckily I had done my homework and recognised the logo to Stone Ness Walled Garden on the roadside. Once parked I followed the path that seemed to disappear deep into the undergrowth. I then found myself in front of a door in the middle of a long wall…all very intriguing indeed. On approaching the door I could smell the delights of a BBQ and hear laughter and chatting – I had obviously found the right place. The day I visited was the garden’s annual Open Day, giving the opportunity for members of the public to come and visit and meet some of the volunteers and users of the garden. I learned a lot about this charity who provide therapeutic horticulture to members of the local community with learning difficulties and/

or mental health issues. The charity is run by Project Manager Jean Burgess, who used to be a vet in Rusthall for many years before taking on the task of creating the Stone Ness Walled Garden as it is now with the help of her dedicated team of volunteers. The home and garden used to be a kitchen garden for a small mansion nearby and was completely overgrown when Jean took over. Therapy is provided through horticultural activities which are led by volunteers and approximately 30 adults visit each week in small groups and sessions are tailored to meet the needs of those taking part. They might be sowing seeds or planting out vegetables, gathering fruit. As all gardeners know, there is always something that needs doing. It was a pleasure spending the morning with such a friendly group which includes volunteers from St Anthony’s on Church Road and I’d like to thank everyone for their warm hospitality on my visit. To find out more, or even volunteer, visit stonenesswalledgarden.org or telephone Jean on 01892 740 305.

Crowborough Opticians Healthy Eyes It is important to remember that eye health is just as crucial as all other forms of health. Regular eye check ups can detect any potential eye disease which would be unnoticeable until becoming more developed. As with anything, the earlier any problems are identified, the better the potential outcome.

Matthew, Lisa and Maria at your service Optometrists Matthew and Maria Smee have been working in eye care for a combined total of more than 47 years. For the last 15 of those they have been running a domiciliary service visiting elderly patients at their homes to deliver high quality eye care, contracted by the NHS. Having lived in the area for over a decade, they realised there was a gap in the local market for a fully independent opticians. Matthew and Maria have worked in a huge variety of positions across the optometry field, with experience in laser eye surgery, large multiple chains, smaller independent practices and high end practices in London. It was with this vast depth of experience that they decided it was time to open their own practice and bring their knowledge and skills to Crowborough.

Each comprehensive eye test will last between 30 and 40 minutes with the results discussed in detail with you so you fully understand and are able to make informed decisions about your sight. The practice is fitted out with high-tech equipment such as OCT (Optical Coherence Tomography) machines which are able to scan into your eye tissue and help detect any potential problems.

A tailored service for children Did you know - around one million children in the UK have an undiagnosed vision problem? If your children has any issues with their sight which isn’t addressed by the time they reach seven or eight, they could end up with reduced vision for the rest of their life. Matthew and Maria recommend that your children should have their eyes tested annually from the age of three to ensure that any potential problems are detected. Eye examinations for children at Crowborough Opticians are designed to be informal and friendly so your child feels relaxed and at ease. Children are entitled to free NHS-funded eye assessments and there is a good selection of frames to suit almost any budget.

Specialist low vision clinic Crowborough Opticians want to help you maximise your remaining vision to give you 20 | www.crowborough-magazine.co.uk • info@crowborough-magazine.co.uk • 01732 864 878

Business Page Mead House Car Park Recently Jeff Thomas, Executive Member of the Chamber, along with representatives from the Crowborough Community Association and Crowborough Town Council, met with Abbey Homes (Wealden District Council’s appointed developer) to discuss their plans for the Mead House Car Park area. The Chamber remains opposed to any net loss of parking spaces as a result of development on the site and took the opportunity to inform Abbey Homes that we will fight any development that did not compensate the loss of around 90 spaces, either within the site or elsewhere in the town. The Chamber is concerned that once Pine Grove becomes operational demand for parking will far exceed those immediately in front of the building. Crowborough residents who lived here when the District Council occupied Pine Grove will remember that not only was the Mead House Car Park fully utilised but that there was a staff car park of around 60 spaces where Morrisons staff dining room is now. Not only will the loss of car parking spaces be detrimental to the offices at Pine Grove (once they have reopened) but will also increase pressure on the remaining car parks, making it increasingly difficult for visitors to the town centre to find a space. The current proposal from Abbey Homes contravenes the recommendations of Mr Mike Fox, Planning Inspector, who commented on the now withdrawn Local Plan that ““….Regarding site CRA (Mead House) I am not persuaded that there is an overriding case for such a large proportion of the site to be developed for housing on this important town centre site; I consider that at least part of the site should be reserved for both office floor space and/or community facilities as well as for car parking.” The Chamber will continue to monitor the situation to press for a resolution which properly balances the need for maintaining parking as it stands and WDC’s desire to sell the site for housing.

News from the Community Wealden Citizens Advice Fundraising Golf Day “We provide free, confidential, independent and impartial advice and campaign on the big issues affecting people’s lives. Our goal is to help everyone find a way forward, whatever problem they face. People come to us with all sorts of issues, e.g. money, benefit, housing or employment.

Nevill Golf Course near Tunbridge Wells · Includes bacon roll and coffee on arrival at 8am onwards · 9:30am shotgun start, range of golfing competitions including “beat the pro” · 3:30pm buffet dinner with after dinner speech by European Tour winner and Team GB Olympic Captain, Jamie Spence, raffle, auction · £240 per team of four (includes a donation), each team to provide a raffle prize please.

In 2016/17 we helped 4,587 Wealden residents with 17,884 issues. Our volunteer team secured our clients over £5m in improved financial outcomes, including over £3m in additional income such as welfare benefits and tax credits, much of which will be spent locally. Helping someone stay in their home, pay their bills and feel better can reduce the costs to local services, especially health and local council service. Our volunteers alone provide services estimated to be worth over £0.5m per year and it is estimated that every £1 spent on Citizens Advice in Wealden saves the taxpayer more than twice that.

2. Enter individuals to play golf at a cost of £70 per player

We are an independent charity – we do not receive any funding from National Citizens Advice or Government – we have to raise every penny ourselves!

· £100 per hole, please supply a banner suitable for use at the golf course – in return we will include you in thank you publicity via after dinner speech, website & other social media such as twitter

3. Donate raffle and/or auction prizes - in return we will include you in thank you publicity via after dinner speech, website & other social media such as twitter 4. Sponsor a hole:

5. Make a donation – ways to donate are detailed on our website www. wealdencitizensadvice.org.uk 6.
