The Crowborough Magazine • November/December 2017

Note from the Editor... Dear Readers, Welcome to the November/December issue of The Crowborough Magazine. I can’t believe how quickly the year has gone and it’s certainly been action packed as well. As I’m writing this, Bonfire Season is in full swing and I was lucky to enjoy a visit to the Rotherfield & Mark Cross event at the end of September as a visiting Bonfire Society. I had forgotten quite how long the route was and, despite the rain, it was a super evening. Organising these huge events is no small task and there were 29 entries in the procession this year. Well done to all those who were involved in the organisation, to the local businesses who support the event and of course to everyone who took part.

In the run up to Christmas there is always plenty to do and see in and around Crowborough. You’ll find full listings of the Christmas Fairs, fireworks, quiz nights, concerts and other events in the What’s On guide. Don’t forget, if you’re part of a not-for-profit group or organisation and you would like to feature your event details in the magazine, it’s free to do so. Just email all the information to info@crowborough-magazine.co.uk and it will be included in the relevant issue. This December ,The Crowborough Magazine will be celebrating it’s eleventh birthday. So to mark the occasion I have decided to sponsor the prize crossword and the lucky winner will receive a bottle of bubbly. Turn to page 42 and get your entries in by 1st December 2017. If any local businesses would like to sponsor the Prize Crossword in 2018, please do get in touch so I can book you in. It costs nothing other than the donation of a prize and in return your logo will appear on the front cover and on the crossword pages. For those advertisers wishing to take out Premium Page advertising, I am already getting very booked up for 2018 with only one Front Cover position left. While the rest of the magazine is always as big as it needs to be, Premium Pages need to be booked well in advance so you can get the position you want. Please email me separately for availability. 10 | www.crowborough-magazine.co.uk • info@crowborough-magazine.co.uk • 01732 864 878

The Crowborough Magazine • November/December 2017 I’m also looking to include more Community Features for 2018. If you would like a full page about your group or organisation, it’s easy to do. You can either submit your own text and photos or I’m more than happy to come along and visit and write a feature for you. All the features that appear in this magazine also have their own dedicated page on the website. It’s a great way to let the local community know what you’re up to and of course to build your membership. Don’t forget, on Sunday 3rd December, the annual Crowborough 10k Road Race will be taking place from 10am. This year for the first time there is also a 5k Fun Run. You can find full information on the Crowborough Runners website www.crowboroughrunners.org.uk. How can I not have mentioned Christmas yet? This is the Christmas issue after all! And of course Christmas wouldn’t be Christmas without a panto. You can find full details of how to obtain tickets for the Crowborough Player’s panto ‘Jack and the Beanstalk’ on page 38. I’d like to take this opportunity to thank all the advertisers who appear in this magazine and of course all you readers who support the magazine - without you I wouldn’t have been able to celebrate 11 years of publishing. As always, please do mention ‘The Crowborough Magazine’ if you are responding to anything you’ve seen in this publication as it helps to secure it’s future. Wishing you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! Until next time...

News from the Community Crowborough Hospital Fete raises more than £15,000 Crowborough Hospital’s annual fete on Bank Holiday Monday was blessed with fine weather, a big turnout and high profits to support patient services, equipment and the Social Day Centre. “It looks as though the final total of funds raised will be some £15,000 – a great result and an 18 per cent increase over last year,” said Fete Organiser Ricky Booth. “I would like to thank our many sponsors and the people of Crowborough for their donations to the fete’s stalls and for their generous spending on the big day. I also pay tribute to the many people who helped to make the day such a success and for their hard work and commitment in the weeks and months leading

up to the fete.” It was a great day for the people of Crowborough, with long queues forming along Southview Road in the hour before the opening at 2.00pm. Afternoon teas proved to be very popular as did the ice cream van and ‘garden bar’ on such a warm and sunny day. All the stalls – books, toys, collectables, clothes, puzzles, cakes, tombolas, silent auction, and many more – were reporting high takings from early afternoon and it came as no surprise that, with the final accounting still to be done, a vintage year was recorded.

Crowborough Enterprise Centre UPDATE Crowborough Town Council, in collaboration with Basepoint, is moving forwards with the delivery of The Crowborough Enterprise Centre; an ‘easy in, easy out’ flexible space for small businesses and start-ups to lease (via Basepoint). The Council has appointed MacConvilles as the lead member of its professional team to act as cost consultants and project manager on the Town Council’s behalf. At a recent meeting of the full council sources of funding to cover the current ‘pretender estimate’ were identified and the council committed to completing the conversion and delivering the project for the summer of 2018. In addition to the business hub the building will see the library remain in its current location on the first floor, with the Town Council moving in to the old WDC council chamber area on the ground floor. Moving forwards, the project now has the full team in place to create the detailed design with a view to going out to tender in December in order to obtain cost certainty for the redevelopment. Once completed the project will make available over sixty lettable units (totalling around 15,000sqft) for businesses; allowing collaborative working with businesses working alongside each other. The units will be of varying sizes, from 100-150sqft to 600sqft, with the majority of units being 150-250sqft. There will also be communal break out spaces and the ability to rent out meeting rooms. Mayor, Cllr Peter Ellefsen, said “I am excited by the accelerating movement towards completion of the Crowborough Enterprise Centre which will provide tremendous facilities for local small businesses. It has been a slow and meticulous process, making sure that everything in the project is properly in place, and it has not been without its problems. But now it is due to be operational next summer and I am really looking forward to the Crowborough Enterprise Centre being ‘open for business’.” Crowborough Town Council Newsletter - Issue 4, 2017

Scam Awareness Are you Scam-Aware? Would you know how to get advice about scams or potential scams? Scams affect the lives of millions of people across the UK. People who are scammed often experience loneliness, shame and social isolation. Friends Against Scams is a National Trading Standards Scams Team initiative which aims to protect and prevent people from becoming victims of scams by empowering communities to “Take a Stand Against Scams”. Friends Against Scams has been created to tackle the lack of scams awareness by providing information about scams and those who fall victim to them. This information enables communities and organisations to understand scams, talk about them and cascade messages throughout communities about scams prevention and protections. Friends Against Scams encourages communities and organisations to take the knowledge learnt and turn it into action. Anyone can join Friends Against Scams and make a difference in their own way. Scams come in many forms; uninvited contact is received by email, letter, and telephone or in person making false promises to con victims out of money. There are many scams but the most common are fake lotteries, deceptive prize draws or sweepstakes, clairvoyants, computer scams, and romance scams. The criminals attempt to trick people with flashy, official looking documents or websites, or convincing telephone sales patter, with the aim of persuading them to send a processing or administration fee, pay postal or insurance costs or make a premium rate phone call. Doorstep Scams are crimes carried out by bogus callers, rogue traders and unscrupulous sales people who call, often uninvited, at people’s homes under the guise of legitimate business or trade. Whatever, and however, a scam is carried out – it is FRAUD. Crowborough Town Council has already signed up to the Scam Charter and become a ‘Friend’. During the summer the council hosted a successful Scam Awareness session, led by Elaine Bowdery from the Safer East Sussex Team at East Sussex County Council. If you, or a group or organisation you are involved with, would be interested in hosting a similar event in Crowborough to further spread the word about scam awareness, please contact Elaine on 0345 6080190. Alternatively you may wish to visit the national website www.friendsagainstscams.org.uk. Crowborough Town Council Newsletter - Issue 4, 2017

Safer Roads

We are delighted to announce our joint ROAD SAFETY CAMPAIGN with Withyham Parish Council Withyham Parish Council and Crowborough Town Council are working in partnership to promote road safety in the local area. Road safety is a critical issue for all communities, and is of particular concern in the Wealden area which has one of the highest incident rates in the country. The two councils have joined forces to tackle the issue, and are planning a series of events and initiatives, culminating in Road Safety Week, which this year is 20th – 26th November. The campaign is being supported by East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service, and includes the opportunity for an Education Officer to visit local schools and speak directly to students about promoting road safety. There will be a poster competition run in the schools, with the winning entries made into posters and displayed outside the schools during Road Safety Week. The campaign has benefitted from a grant from the Safer Wealden Partnership of £1,500 which will be used to fund promotional material and prizes for the competition winners. The focus on the campaign will be speed awareness, with Speedwatch groups being involved in recording details of speeding vehicles at key locations across Crowborough, Groombridge and Withyham. Key messages will be communicated via a co-ordinated social media campaign and roadside posters reinforcing the message across the area. The councils are keen to encourage a long-term change in road users’ behaviour and reduce the number of serious incidents involving local residents. Further information can be obtained from the Clerks on: Crowborough - 01892 652907 or clerk@crowboroughtowncouncil.gov.uk Withyham - 01892 64557 or clerk@withyhamparishcouncil.org.uk Crowborough Town Council Newsletter - Issue 4, 2017

Visit from Montargis friends This summer saw another hugely successful visit from the Friends of Crowborough. During the month of August twenty nine people travelled from our twinned town of Montargis to meet here in Crowborough with old friends, and to make new friends. On arrival, the group came to a reception in the Town Hall where the Mayor, Cllr Peter Ellefsen, showed off his linguistic skills by welcoming President, Alain Simon, and the rest of the party in French. During the four-day visit there was a trip to the Seaford Museum (housed in the Martello Tower), another to the Beachy Head micro-brewery, Sunday lunch at High Rocks and much, much more! Cllr Greg Rose said: “It was a pleasure to welcome the French visitors to Crowborough once again. This annual tradition continues to forge friendships and cement existing ones. The sun shone all weekend and plenty of food and wine was consumed by all!” Although twenty-nine people visited this year, many more people actually wanted to come over and the Society of Friends of Montargis had to turn down requests due to a lack of host families here in Crowborough. If you would be interested in hosting someone in the future please contact the SOFOM: Mrs Mary Collins on (01892) 662676 or maryandbrian.collins@talktalk.net

News from the Community Crowborough & District Lions Looking forward to winter activities “The weather smiled on us at the Crowborough Hospital Fete on August bank holiday Monday where we raised £709 on our two stalls. A big thank you is extended to all the residents who donated tins and bottles to our ‘Cut-theCards’ tins stall and our ‘Tombola’ bottles stall, together with everyone who supported us on the day. country. We look forward to the run-up to Christmas with all our usual activities, plus an extra surprise this year. We will be shaking collection buckets at the towns November Fireworks Display and help marshal the annual10k run on 3rd December.

Our sponsored Darts Marathon, where money raised is shared between each team’s nominated charity and Lions’ good causes was completed and prizes will be awarded to winning teams and individual players. You may have seen us at this year’s Crowborough Bonfire & Carnival Procession with our ‘Bob the Builder’ float helping to raise funds for this worthy cause. A lot of work goes into preparing the float and a lot of fun was had on the day as yet again the residents of Crowborough displayed their renowned generosity. People that we helped recently were: an elderly couple with bedroom equipment; a donation to Crowborough ATC for training equipment; a PhD student attending a children’s literature congress in Canada to present her paper; and a student who was volunteering in a third world

Father Christmas will be at the Crowborough Town Fair with his sleigh so look out for him when he visits the children around the housing estates when we go carol singing. The Crowborough Magazine attracts both large and small businesses who want to promote their services locally, with costs kept low to offer excellent value advertising. Smaller businesses, especially those without a ‘shop front’, can promote their services in a quality publication to the people who want to use them.

There are some great reasons to give it a go! Targeted audience: The magazine is delivered to over 11,000 homes and businesses in the TN6 area by Royal Mail every other month. Great value: Prices are kept low so that small businesses can make the most of their advertising budget and appear over a number of issues. It’s a fact that a sustained campaign works better at increasing sales than a one-off advert. All advertisers featured in each issue are listed on the magazine’s website - www.crowborough-magazine.co.uk - giving your business even more exposure. Good Service: From your initial enquiry, we will help you choose the best advertising package for your business according to your budget. We will make sure you have an eye-catching advert with a clear message about your business. Results: We want your advertising to work for you and we will do our best to make sure you get the most out of your campaign. About 80% of the businesses in this magazine are repeat advertisers!
