The Crowborough Magazine • May/June 2017

Note from the Editor... Dear Readers, As I’ve been putting the finishing touches to this issue, the sun has been blazing outside the office window, the sounds of children playing and lawn mowers mowing means that summer is truly on it’s way! I’m delighted to present to you another jam-packed issue, full of interesting information and updates from the community and plenty of activities taking place over the next couple of months. Kicking off May of course is the start of the Crowborough Community Festival with activities for everyone taking place over the month. You can find out more information on page 5 and full details are available on the website crowboroughcommunityfestival.org. What began as an idea not that long ago for festival chairman Denis Hart has really turned into something spectacular for the whole community in a relatively short space of time. I’ve already got my tickets to a couple of the events, maybe I’ll see you there. Don’t forget to book online on the festival website or at the Community Centre. Even though many of the events are free, they are limited in numbers so reserving your tickets is essential. I recently had the pleasure of interviewing Denis on my weekly radio show, The Community Show, to find out more about how he turned his idea into a month-long event and what has been his inspiration and motivation behind it. If you’d like to listen to the show you can hear the podcast by going to thecommunityshow.net/past-shows and look for show #95. Coming up in June is the Summer Fun Day, organised by the local Crowborough & District Chamber of Commerce. I can’t believe it’s now in it’s 10th year and getting more and more popular all the time. For the last few years we have been able to enjoy a French Market as part of the event but this year you will find an Italian Market in the High Street instead. The date is Saturday 3rd June and it will be running all day, from 9am until 5pm. Don’t forget there will be road closures in place in the Town Centre for the event. It’s always great to see local businesses recognised in the town and Crowborough is very fortunate to have such a vibrant business community, whether based in the Town Centre, industrial estates or even running from a home - there really is such a vast amount of different businesses operating out of the area. Well done to those who won awards at the recent Crowborough Chamber Business Awards. You can find out who they were on page 30. I am relieved to have more crossword entries flooding into the office after a huge dip at the beginning of the year. Thomas’ Dog & Cat Grooming On 1st February this year, Ailsa and Elizabeth Jones (daughter and mother) opened the doors at Thomas’ Professional Dog & Cat Grooming in Connors Yard, Beeches Road. Ailsa started Thomas’ Dog Grooming nearly two years ago in Maresfield after previously working for another grooming parlour. Traditional grooming parlours can often use a series of restraints to restrict movement during grooming, a method Ailsa doesn’t use at Thomas’ and one of the reasons she wanted her own business. In December 2016 Elizabeth joined her daughter and Thomas’ Professional Cat Grooming was launched. Ailsa and Elizabeth are both City & Guilds qualified in dog grooming and the safety and wellbeing of their four-legged clients is paramount. They only ever have one client’s pets in at a time, giving a true 1-2-1 dedicated service. There are so many health benefits to having your animals groomed on a regular basis and it will also mean you don’t have as much fur on your carpets, clothes or even in your food! The parlour is fitted out with equipment that will adapt to both small and large dogs - no job is too big or too small! They are happy for owners to stay with their animals during grooming so they can see for themselves the level

of care and attention their pets receive. They treat each pet as if it were one of their own. During longer treatments the animals are given short breaks from their grooming in order to prevent any build up of stress as their wellbeing is taken very seriously at Thomas’. Prior to grooming, a thorough 7 Point Health Check is carried out to spot any abnormalities or early signs of disease or infection. Ailsa and Elizabeth are not vets but they can certainly provide advice as to what owners should do if they do find anything of concern. The idea of having a dog groomed regularly is quite normal...but taking your cat to the local grooming parlour may seem an unusual idea. Elizabeth is the cat groomer at Thomas’ and she is a true cat lady, not only a professional who is qualified in cat grooming but who also has a unique cat calming ability. Unlike the dogs who have a slip lead on when they are on the grooming table, Elizabeth makes sure the cats are comfortable and they simply sit or lie down for her while she grooms them. Not all cats are willing to have a bath so Elizabeth may use a special dry shampoo. You can even decide on a style for your cat - the Lion or Teddy Bear cuts are popular. Ailsa and Elizabeth have great people skills as well as great animal skills and their clients feel very at ease when dropping their animals off (or you can arrange for their collection and drop-off service). If you are fed up of constantly clearing animal fur from around your home, book your pet in for an appointment at Thomas’ as a groomed pet is a happy pet! News from the Community area to benefit his failing health.

Crowborough Primary Schools To Explore ‘Lost World’ “A project that celebrates Crowborough’s environment and some of its notable former residents has secured Heritage Lottery Fund support. The support will enable earth science workshops in primary schools giving pupils the opportunity to handle geological materials including fossils and use a locally abundant material, clay, in art workshops. Classes will also go on a Lost World ‘Quest’, walking to nearby green spaces to discover more about the area’s rocks, fossils, dinosaurs and modernday reptiles and their habitats. A Lost World Fun Day will launch Crowborough’s first ‘On Top of the Weald’ Community Festival and will enable the wider community to participate in the project. Street theatre, the ‘Iguanodon Restaurant’; workshops by Dinosaur Roar’s author Paul Stickland, dinosaur-themed videos and a school art exhibition and competition will be just some of the day’s attractions. The project is inspired by the ‘Lost World’, a book written by former resident Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, but it will also raise awareness of the works of lesser-known resident Charles Leeson, a Victorian meteorologist whose promotion of the area’s climate and topography influenced the town’s development as a Victorian health resort; Gideon Mantell, a local dinosaur hunter; and Richard Jeffries, a nature writer who visited the

The project brings together the newly-formed Crowborough Festival Association, the High Weald AONB Partnership, heritage experts, education providers, performance artists and six primary schools. Denis Hart, Festival Chairman is enthusiastic about the value of the project. “The Lost World Quest will be lots of fun with children taking on the roles of characters in the Lost World book - zoologists, botanists, reporters, scientists and adventurers to explore our local countryside. Carrying out the Quest will develop skills in role-playing, map-reading and heritage recording.” The High Weald AONB Partnership has helped develop the project “It is fantastic that Crowborough is celebrating its location on the highest ridge of the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The project is a great opportunity for the community to find out more about what lies beneath the town’s rolling hills and how that geology has created the area’s internationally valuable habitats of heath, sandrock and wooded gills”. - Denis Hart, Crowborough Festival Association Chairman

Crowborough News In this issue:

Issue 2 2017

TOWN CONFERENCE EDITION

A message from the Mayor My third year as Mayor has been very busy and interesting, with the opportunity to meet even more of the residents and discuss the many issues the town faces. It has also been very busy with the Full Council meetings every two months and the five committees which meet between the main Council meetings. We had two Councillors resign over the last year and we now have two new Councillors, who have had to very quickly come to terms with how the council works and it’s responsibilities. This is made difficult due to the diverse responsibilities and activities that the Council undertake. Our Town Clerk also resigned last year and it fell upon the Mayor to quickly find a locum to stand in whilst the long process of recruitment was undertaken. Fortunately a previous Crowborough Town Council Clerk agreed to stand in until a new Clerk could be appointed. After a lengthy recruitment process we were fortunate to find an experienced Clerk in Andy Beams who joined us last November and he has settled in very quickly to his new role.

Town Events The events arranged by the Council were not affected by the weather last year and the firework display did not suffer as the year previous. I must thank all the people who attended and enjoyed one of the best displays to date. It was definitely the largest audience I have seen at any of the displays. Fortunately the weather was also on our side for the Summer Fair and Christmas event. The

Summer Fair was well attended and we saw some new attractions including dogs rounding up ducks. I was again given the task of judging the cake competition, which is always very daunting, but fortunately there was a very clear winner who deserved the trophy. The Christmas event was very well attended and everyone appeared to be enjoying the street entertainers and colourful stalls. The annual turning on of the Christmas lights again turned our High Street into an illuminated Christmas scene and Sue Pollard, who turned the lights on, was her usual zany self. This is by far the most enjoyable event I attended as it gives me two hours to meet and greet the residents in a relaxed atmosphere and to join in the fun. I would like to thank the Scouts for providing a delicious burger to keep me warm and all the other groups who supported the event. I also attended a number of carol services both in Crowborough and neighbouring towns where I enjoyed singing the traditional carols with the local congregations. However, not all the Mayor’s events are enjoyable and the annual Remembrance Day is a very solemn event. Again this year I found it very emotional to lay a wreath on behalf of Crowborough and to remember all those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom. The parade this year was the largest yet and as the Mayor has to inspect the participating groups I had to walk half way around the Croft Road car park before I reached the end. There was also the laying of a wreath at Canada Green, to remember the Canadian soldiers who died in Crowborough when a Doodlebug hit their camp.

Mayor’s Engagements During the year I have had various engagements as Mayor including attending the dedication

A message from the Mayor continued...

festival for the new St Johns church hall and the official opening of the refurbished café at the Community Centre. I was invited again this year to visit the Scouts and Air Cadets, who achieve so much with the young people of our town. The dedicated volunteers, who give their time to train our youth in skills which will help them in later life, are to be applauded. I also attended a presentation of the Ashdown District Scouts bronze and silver medal presentation for Chief Scouts in Uckfield. I attended the annual play at St Johns school which was titled “Robin and The Sherwood Hoodies” and was great fun. The other fun day was at Sir Henry Fermor School when the children set up stalls to promote Crowborough and to show how deep their knowledge of the town was. I had to pick a winning stall and the children tried their hardest to make me choose them by offering me cakes and sweets. On a business note I attended the ceremony where a Crowborough business was awarded the prestigious Queens Award for Innovation. This is a great honour and well deserved by the company. I also gave a talk to the Rotary club, who asked me to give an insight on the highs and lows of being a Town Mayor. The talk lasted longer than I anticipated as I never rehearse a speech and the subject is so diverse that I wanted to cover every aspect. Unfortunately there is not room in this report to mention all the engagements I was invited to but I would like to thank all these and the other organisations for inviting me to attend their

various events.

Finally… The Mayor’s year is, however, not all about attending events and has a serious side which is promoting the town and making representations to various authorities. To this end I have again had regular meetings with the District Council, emergency services and other local organisations. One fruitful meeting is the quarterly meeting with the Chairman of Wealden District Council, where the Mayors and Council leaders of the Wealden area get together to discuss issues which affect their towns. My personal agenda has always been to keep our town a safe and healthy place to live and to improve and preserve its amenities for future generations. One of my two charities this year is Taylor Made Dreams who help sick children to fulfil their dreams of having a holiday; because of the constant care these children require it is difficult for the parents to cope with holidays and this is where the charity can help. My other charity is Chestnut Tree who give help and respite to parents who have children with a short life expectancy. By providing hospice care they allow the parents a break from the constant attention these children require. In conclusion, I would like to thank the Town Council staff for their hard work and commitment in the efficient running of the Council over the past year. Also thanks to my wife Lyn for all her support and understanding during another busy year for me as Mayor. Cllr Ron Reed

Communications and Events Committee It was tremendous to see in the recent Sunday Times article that Crowborough was highlighted as one of the best places to live in the South East. The piece paid particular attention to the events that we organise, specifically the annual Boundary Walk, Sussex Day and the Summer Fair, all of which are always such a joy to attend. 2106 marked a special year for Crowborough

as the town marked the 50th anniversary of the twinning with Montargis, France. The annual visit from ‘The Society of the Friends of Crowborough’ was even more poignant, with numerous events held over the fourday visit, culminating in a evening reception at the Community Centre where our town was presented with the gift of some tiled artwork celebrating the 50th anniversary.

Communication and Events Committee continued...

The committee is currently in the process of arranging a cabinet for this and it will soon be displayed on Montargis Terrace in the town for all to enjoy.

The lighting of the Crowborough Beacon to celebrate the Queen’s 90th birthday was our contribution to a very special national event. Although a rather chilly April evening, the event was well attended and the beacon was lit by Tommy and Bunty Douglas – a wonderful Crowborough couple who were both celebrating their own 90th birthdays in 2016. The Summer Fair saw excellent weather again this year and the event was enjoyed by many. This is one of the jewels in the crown of our yearly events. Thanks must go to the many groups and organisations that turn up with stalls, to those who take part in the horticultural competitions and to everyone who attends and makes it such a success. In particular, congratulations went this year to 1st Jarvis Brook Guides who won the Cake-Off competition and to Bunny Run Nursery who won the ‘Best Stall’ award. The firework display continues to be our biggest event with well over 10,000 people attending. It has rightly gained a reputation for being one of the best in the area. The committee received a number of positive comments after this year’s event including: “I was stunned. The show was incredible. I’ve seen fireworks displays before, they’ve been good. But nothing was as good as this.” “Brilliant fireworks last night in Crowborough, well done to all concerned.” “Brilliant show as always.”

always so proud that it seems the whole of Crowborough comes out to support this event. I thought the fireworks this year were AMAZING.” The choice of Christmas lights also continues to gain positive feedback and I should thank Millbrook Garden Centre for donating the 2016 Christmas tree which was situated in the Piazza. Sue Pollard proved to be a massive hit when she turned the lights on at the end of our Christmas Cracker event and was exceptionally gracious in staying on to sign autographs after having turned on the lights. The many stalls, land train, music and entertainers were all fantastic and added to the festive atmosphere. Thanks must go to Caroline Miles and her team for putting a lot of hard work in to getting all these events delivered successfully. We have a number of great events lined up for 2017 too. However, I would like to draw attention to the new Crowborough Community Festival this May. It has been great to see how Denis Hart and a small team have worked so hard to create a really exciting and varied set of activities. As a Council we have been keen to support the festival and very much hope you will feel able to support the many varied events as much as you can. It would be great to see this become an annual or biannual date in the calendar - it might even get a mention in The Sunday Times next year!

Cllr Matthew Street

Environment Committee The Environment Committee continues its diverse work for the good of Crowborough. My first year as Chairman of this committee has been particularly busy and I thank Andy Beams and his staff for the efficient and helpful way that they have kept up with the workload generated from this committee. In particular, a big thank you to all of the grounds staff, our Ranger, the Environment Warden, and all who work tirelessly to keep Crowborough looking at it’s best. As a committee, most commonly we receive requests by members of the public looking for highways improvements, traffic calming measure and extra dog waste bins. We investigate all requests from residents, however with limited financial resources we can only try to remedy the most severe cases and where there is the greatest need. That said, the work of the Environment Committee is far further reaching than just this and I have given you a brief update on some of the other areas which we are responsible for below. Our ultimate aim is to keep Crowborough a clean, safe and attractive town in which to live.

of woodland which has increased the size, and therefore the wildlife value, of The Gyhll Nature Reserve on behalf of Crowborough’s residents. Also, the agreement of lease terms for the old overgrown former tennis courts behind Fermor Primary School are underway. Once finalised, work will be able to commence on the creation of the new Pocket Park Nature Reserve. Planning and ecological survey work has commenced on what will be a wonderful addition to Crowborough’s available outdoor space. We have had the pleasure of the Exmoor ponies again on the pony meadows this year. The unique way that they graze is doing a great job at improving the meadow for all forms of wildlife from wildflowers, pollinating insects (such as butterflies and bees), reptiles, small mammals and birds of prey such as Barn Owls, Sparrowhawks, Kestrels and Buzzards. The meadows continue to receive many compliments and this year we appear to have seen an increase in the number of people using them for picnicking.

Community Safety The Town Council has constantly opposed and made representations to Sussex Police following the changes to Neighbourhood Policing last year and the removal of Crowborough’s dedicated PCSOs. Crowborough Town Council is actively exploring the potential of employing a Community Warden to hopefully try and fill a small part of the gap which many residents feel, and the Town Council recognise, has been left since the PCSO role was changed. Crowborough is one of 200 councils which form the Sussex CCTV Partnership run by Sussex Police.

Nature Reserves This has been a productive and successful year for our nature reserves. We have managed to complete on the purchase of two new plots

In The Ghyll, Country Park and Bluebell Wood there has been much effort to control/reduce bramble, bracken and holly, especially along the sides of the paths in order to open them up. Volunteers have been most helpful in assisting with winter path improvement work, the creation of new glades and the improvement of some of the existing glades in all three areas. This on-going path and glade improvement work, will over time, attract significantly more flora and fauna species. This will in turn make the areas more enjoyable for walkers and those interested in wildlife.

Walshes Park A new 70 acre park owned by Wealden District Council is due to be opened in May at the southern edge of the town behind Alderbrook. I personally have walked the area and would highly recommend everyone to visit it, as when finished, it will be a huge asset to the town, providing a wonderful new wildlife reserve and a lovely recreational space with stunning views.

yearly ‘Strengthening Local Relationships’ meeting with East Sussex Highways team. We look to match fund some of the most severe issues, and those which will have the greatest positive effects on residents. Currently there are two areas yet to be agreed by East Sussex for which the Town Council has submitted match funding requests for yellow lines. Additionally we have recently had a meeting with Highways team and can report that a full review of yellow lines within the town is being undertaken, hopefully with the aim to improve the common bottle necks such as Mill Lane.

Transport

South East In Bloom The planting in the town this year was as exceptional as always. It has been agreed that Crowborough will enter South East In Bloom 2017. We are entering in two categories (Town Centre and The Country Park.) We are calling on all businesses in the Town to take pride in their shop fronts and to make a special effort in July when the judging takes place. South East In Bloom isn’t just about flowers and hanging baskets; it also incorporates horticulture, green spaces, the environment and community involvement. This is a great opportunity to promote Crowborough as a place to come shopping (not just for the supermarkets) and also a wonderful town full of nature reserves and stunning green spaces.

Highways We have a long list of requests from residents of areas within the town for resurfacing, speed calming measures and yellow lines.

I wish to thank John Coleman who has continued to be the Town Council`s representative for transport. The fact that he attends meetings on the Town Council`s behalf and gives a very knowledgeable report to the Environment Committee on the everchanging rail system and the ever-diminishing bus services is a huge and invaluable help. His full reports can be read on the Town Council website.

Wealdlink Bus Service The Town Council is a major contributor to the funding of Wealdlink Bus Service who provide an essential service in the town running the 224, 225 and 226 services. Soon these bus services will be displayed on the digital display boards at the bus stops. Anyone can use these Wealdlink services. Wealdlink also run a door to door shopping service. These services are for anyone who has difficulty accessing normal service buses. Passengers are required to register in order to use the service. Registration is free, just phone 01892 771332 and register your name and address. Wealdlink are looking for volunteer drivers, if you think you can help then contact them on the number above.

We work closely with our County Councillors who regularly attend our Environment Committee meetings. We also attend a twice Crowborough Town Council Newsletter - Issue 2, 2017

Finance and General Purposes Committee Well, we did it – we bought Pine Grove, after a long and tortuous process, included in the “Package of 3”, Pine Grove, together with the future, but certain, transfer of the freehold of the Community Centre and the Bluebell Wood. The price we paid was unchanged from the original offer we made to Wealden District Council. We also won our appeal against WDC to obtain Planning Permission for D1 use for part of the building so that we can rent out space for activities like a crèche or hairdresser – anything that involves public visitors – similar to the existing library. So, like last year, this report is written still with some unknowns which may be clearer by the time of the Annual Conference. These include when Pine Grove will open for business as “Crowborough Enterprise Centre” – probably early in 2018, at least 6 months later than we planned. But we now have appointed a good operator, Basepoint, who have local successes in Newhaven and Haywards Heath, and who are so confident that the Crowborough Enterprise Centre will be a success that they have agreed a 10 year lease with a rent and a commercial profit share. There is now a real pressure to deliver a successful Enterprise Centre in Crowborough to give a commercial return to you, the Council Tax payers, who have funded this investment, the largest in the Council’s history. Frustratingly the process subsequent to the acquisition has been fraught, firstly with staff changes and locum officers, which has caused a loss of focus and momentum, and the Council’s own decision-making processes whose speed, to put it kindly, bears no relation to any business or commercial decisionmaking process; committees and resolutions do not make for quick decisions. Our balanced budget for 17/18 means that there is an increase of 3% in your council tax in 2017/18. The principal causes of this increase are the decision by WDC to reduce the Council Tax Support Grant which they are phasing out completely over time, and an increase in our pension contribution costs for all Council staff. Onto other matters. Importantly, our internal

and external audits were again passed without any adverse comment, which should reassure you all that your money is in safe hands and is properly administered and accounted for. We continue to have a very cautious investment policy and whilst the interest is minuscule, the money is safe. We also reviewed our Standing Orders, Financial Regulations and our Risk Management policies. We made grants of £52,500 this year and once again the two major recipients were the Citizens’ Advice Bureau and Clued-Up Info, both of which I know you all value highly. Others this year included the Crowborough Festival Association, Crowborough Tennis & Squash Club, Brighter Crowborough, Alderbrook Community Association, Crowborough Darby & Joan Club, Crowborough Arts, Crowborough Bonfire & Carnival Society and Sussex High Weald Dementia Group. Overall it has been another challenging year but looking to the future we are a proactive and project-driven council working together to deliver an exciting future for Crowborough, including looking to acquire land as we have done recently by expanding the Ghyll, to protect our green space from development. We also commissioned a Business Plan which will now go forward to include an updating of the Vision document. We shall be asking for your input, to determine what we want Crowborough to be in the coming years. Although we are essentially a service provider we are also a million plus business so the responsibilities and challenges are large and there has to be a commercial element to deliver a fair value for money for all our residents. We welcome Andy Beams as the new Clerk; he comes to us with a Banking and Financial background in addition to his Local Government experience. It is also a welcome sign that Caroline Miles has been promoted from within to be the Deputy Clerk. Hopefully we now have a stable team to lead us forward in these economically challenging times.

Planning and Development Committee Crowborough Town Council is a statutory consultee for planning applications within the Parish, and accordingly the Planning and Development Committee meets every three weeks to discuss and respond to all such applications. Wealden District Council’s planning policies are in a state of continuing development. In October, they announced a delay to the delivery of the new Wealden Local Plan. The draft proposal is due before WDC Full Council on 20th March and we await the outcome with interest. In the continuing absence of a binding allocation plan, Wealden continues to consider planning applications within 15km of the Ashdown Forest (which includes all of Crowborough) on a case-by-case basis, allowing visitor impact to be mitigated by a financial contribution to a SANGS fund, but still seeking to prevent any development which it considers will increase nitrogen deposition on the Forest. In the last year, the Planning & Development Committee has considered just over 200 planning applications. Although the

majority are for extensions and minor works of various sorts, there have been some substantial applications too, all in south-east Crowborough; approvals have been granted for 34 houses on the Rockington Nursery site (‘Jordan’s’), 18 houses on Tollwood Road (the application for 29 houses there was refused, and an appeal failed), and 12 flats at the Plough & Horses. Currently awaiting a decision is an application for 34 houses at the old Jarvis Brook works depot, and there are initial investigations into 100 houses to the north of Walshes Road. And, in the continuing saga of the Steel Cross development, the plan for 103 houses lost its final legal challenge in the Court of Appeal, but the developer is now considering a reduced application of 50 or 60 houses. I continue to be extremely grateful to the conscientious members of the committee who spend an enormous amount of time scrutinising applications prior to our committee meetings, in addition to absorbing other planning-related policies and documents. Cllr Peter Ellefsen

Sport, Recreation and Cemetery Committee The SRC Committee has been working to progress projects this year. Due to changes in staff this has not been easy. However, I would like to thank David Carden, the locum Project Manager, for his help and expertise during the time he was with the council. I would also like to thank Caroline Miles, the new Deputy Clerk, who is now picking up the pieces and helping to finalise plans.

Goldsmiths Recreation Ground Boating Lake – Great Crested Newts were discovered in the boating lake this year and problems with weed were reported by users of the lake. The Ranger has consulted with

an ecologist and a plan has been put forward to ensure that wildlife is protected whilst the lake can be used for its original intent. A programme is being developed to ensure that the lake is managed sensitively in the future. Miniature Railway – The council has given £3,500 to the Crowborough Locomotive Society for track components so that they can progress their railway extension project. The extension is expected to be completed and ready for Easter 2018. Running Track – Tenders have been received for different options to replace the cinder track. The working party is meeting with two

companies to discuss their tenders further. It will then consult with Crowborough Runners and it is hoped that work may begin later this year.

Wolfe Recreation Ground Council’s works yard - The health and safety work has been completed. Wolfe Cottage – When a tenancy agreement came to an end, the council took the opportunity to complete some work on the cottage. This has been completed and new tenants are now in place.

Summersales Consultants have now been appointed to look at the design and layout of the new cemetery.

Jarvis Brook Recreation Ground The Jarvis Brook Community Association gifted outdoor fitness equipment, installed at the Jarvis Brook Recreation Ground, to the council. We would like to thank them for this.

Palesgate Lane We are still working with the Jarvis Brook Sports Club to look at improving drainage on the land which we would like to use for sporting activities.

General We have carried out general maintenance at all play parks during the year. Each park is inspected regularly by our staff and annually by RoSPA. We have had several instances of anti-social behaviour in our parks during this year. We are going to look at how we can help to prevent these. Blocked toilets have been mentioned at most of our meetings. We have problems of blocked toilets at all our parks; we have installed hygiene and nappy bins in all our toilets and will be monitoring to see if this results in a reduction in costs of unblocking. I would like to thank the SRC committee for all their work throughout the year. Cllr Kay Moss

Appearances Aesthetics Gillian Huntley, 2015 Kent Aesthetic Practitioner of the Year, of award winning appearances has been in the industry for over 30 years, specialising in Advanced Aesthetics for more than 15 of those, and her treatments have helped transform the lives of her clients by boosting their confidence through the non-surgical procedures she offers. As well as specialist treatments such as mole removal, mesotherapy, thread vein/ pigmentation removal, skin peels using the Image Skincare range, skin tag removal, Gillian also provides semi-permanent cosmetic treatments such as eyebrow (WoW Brows) and eyeliner tattooing, areola reconstruction, receding hairlines and medical tattooing. Gillian's own clinic is in Chislehurst but she sees many of her local Edenbridge clients at Options Beauty Salon in the High Street. All her treatments are carried out to the highest possible standards and she also holds all the relevant certifications required so you can be assured you are in safe hands. One of the treatments which is starting to become more popular, and one we haven't actually covered yet through these articles, is the beauty spot (sometimes referred to as a beauty mark). Some people have natural spots which are positioned perfectly, adding that something extra to their face (Marilyn Monroe, Cindy Crawford etc.) There is no rule as to where the perfect 'spot' might be located and after the first three spots Gillian drew on me I didn't think I'd be going through with the treatment. It wasn't until Gillian drew the 'Von Teese' on my face that I could feel my mind changing. It can be quite

a big decision to make on your own and I was glad that I had brought my 1 2 friend Julie along Over my own clear The Marilyn Monroe to this particular mole session. Gillian was more than happy for a friend to accompany me, plus Julie was 3 4 very interested in The Cindy Crawford The Dita Von Teese finding out more about the treatments Gillian offers. I could see from the look on Julie's face (believe me I know her well enough to be able to read her expressions) and without her even saying a word I knew she was in agreement - this was the one - it was fun, looked natural so why not? So with that Gillian began the preparation procedure for my new semipermanent beauty spot. As with all the semi-permanent make-up treatments, the process begins by ensuring the skin is clean (so make-up off ) and a numbing cream is applied to make the process more comfortable. As well as having the beauty spot tattooed Gillian would also be applying the second application of my 'WoW' Brows, the tattooed eye-brows I originally had done a few months ago. Just look at the picture below to see the difference. BEFORE - EYE BROWS Semi-permanent make-up can be used to enhance your features or AFTER - WoW BROWS even to create something that isn't there. Gillian has been able to 'disguise' webbed toes by creating the illusion

Transforming the way we look Part 6 of a gap between the toes. The pigment (colouring) used for the make-up is mixed individually for each client as different tones suit different complexions. Gillian has an extremely good eye in making colour to match her client's features. This process is similar to having a permanent tattoo as there is a needle used to place the coloured pigment under your skin. The difference with semi-permanent tattooing is that the needle does not penetrate the skin as deeply as it is often carried out in very sensitive areas. So what if I decide I didn't want the beauty spot anymore? Well, it will fade over time, disappearing completely in about 2-3 years. If I want to keep it then an annual touch up would be all that is required.

Following any procedure, Gillian gave me my aftercare instructions which includes cream to help the areas treated heal properly. You do have to be careful with the areas for a few days until they heal properly - a process I'm getting rather used to! If you would like to arrange a consultation with Gillian or book an appointment for WoW Brows, beauty spots or any other treatments she offers, call her on 07711 067 789 or email her at gillian@appearancesaesthetics.co.uk.
