The Crowborough Magazine • November/December 2018

Note from the Editor... Dear Readers, I can’t quite believe how we got here so fast! This is the last issue of the year and as I’m writing my regular note to you (this is always the last piece of content to go into the magazine, my tradition when pulling the magazine together) I’m thinking back at what’s happened over the year. I’ve been on some exciting adventures and met some exceptional people, including some of the students at Beacon Academy. Congratulations to Sydney Boyd from Beacon who is representing England in the World Mixed Curling Championships. It’s been a delight to hear about so many successes from all around the area over the last year. While the nights are getting shorter and the weather colder and wetter, it seems that there is more taking place in the local area. With events marking the WW1 Centenary, the Remembrance Service and much more, check out the What’s On guides on pages 20 and 40. In September I had the role of MC at the Edenbridge Motor Show and I want to say a big thank you to the residents of Crowborough who came to say hello to me at the event and also let me know how useful they find this magazine. Before starting these magazines I never would have expected to find myself on stage in front of hundreds of people but I had an absolute blast! I’m very fortunate to love my job(s) with a passion (my boss can be very tough though) and I get to have a great time and meet fantastic people through my work as well as the unexpected opportunities it brings. I’d like to thank Guest’s Shoe Services for sponsoring the crossword this month. It’s one of my favourite shops on the High Street and I can’t wait to check out their new winter boots. Complete the crossword on page 42 and send your entries in for a chance to win. I would like to take this opportunity to wish each and every one of you, readers and advertisers, a wonderful festival season and a fantastic New Year. As always, please do mention ‘The Crowborough Magazine’ if you are responding to anything you’ve seen in this publication as it helps to secure it’s future. Until next time...

News from the Community St. John’s Achieve Platinum Award for the School Games Mark St. John’s are delighted to announce that they have become one of only two Primary Schools in the North Wealden area (there are 57 primary schools in total) to be awarded Platinum Award for the School Games Mark. This is a Government led awards scheme, launched in 2012 to reward schools for their commitment to the development of competition across their school and into the community. Schools in England are able to assess themselves across bronze, silver, gold and platinum levels of the Mark. If a school achieves Gold status for five consecutive years, they are eligible to apply for Platinum. To achieve Platinum, St. John’s had to meet all of the criteria for Gold then submit a detailed case study along with a supporting paragraph

from the School Games Organiser, Mrs Virgo, on how they have used Year 5 and 6 to help run intra-school competitions. Now exempt from next year’s School Games Mark award process they will automatically receive the Platinum Award again in 2019. A special plaque was received to commemorate their achievement in the Autumn Term.

Crowborough News The Official Newsletter of the Crowborough Town Council

Issue 4 2018

In this issue: Battle’s Over  Grand Fireworks Display  Town Council Elections  Goldsmiths Recreation Ground  Christmas Cracker

Crowborough Enterprise Centre UPDATE We are delighted that work has now begun to convert the former council offices at Pine Grove into the Crowborough Enterprise Centre. Our contractors moved on to the site during the summer and the work is scheduled for completion at the end of December. The enterprise centre will occupy all of the larger wing of the building (off the atrium to the right as you enter) we will be moving the Crowborough Town Council offices into the smaller ground floor wing (off the atrium to the left as you enter) and the library will remain in its current location on the first floor. Cllr Peter Ellefsen is the Chairman of the working group dealing with the project. He has been expressing his excitement and enthusiasm for this venture: “The building works are progressing well; they are on schedule and on budget, and I am delighted to see such a smooth and well-managed programme emerging from what has hitherto been a rather bumpy ride. We will be creating sixty three lettable units of various sizes - all of which will be made available on “easy-in, easy-out” tenancy agreements. There have already been a satisfying number of expressions of interest but it’s still too early to estimate initial occupation levels, or how quickly it will fill up; although the current expectation is that it will be almost fully occupied by 2022. This is an exciting undertaking for both the council and the people of Crowborough – it is an outstanding opportunity for small, young businesses to develop, and for the entrepreneurial spirit to flourish in Crowborough.” If you are interested in renting a unit, or have any questions about the new Enterprise Centre, please contact the Town Hall on 01892 652907 or info@crowboroughtowncouncil. gov.uk Crowborough Town Council Newsletter - Issue 4, 2018

Battle’s Over locations throughout the country and overseas, following which a specially written tribute will be read out. During the evening buglers will sound the Last Post at more than 1,000 locations, followed by the ‘Beacons of Light’ – a special tribute which will see beacons all across the country lit, signifying the light of peace that emerged from the darkness of four years of war. After the beacons have been lit, over 1,000 churches and cathedrals in the United Kingdom will ring their bells as part of ‘Ringing Out for Peace’. This November we are proud to be taking part in ‘Battle’s Over’ – an international event commemorating one hundred years since the end of World War One. Organised by Pageant-Master Bruno Peek LVO OBE OPR, Battle’s Over takes place on November 11th 2018, marking one hundred years since the guns fell silent at the end of World War One. Our town will be part of an international day of commemoration with events throughout the United Kingdom, Channel Islands, the Isle of Man, and at scores of locations overseas, including New Zealand, Ireland, Australia, Bermuda, France, Belgium, Canada, the United States and Germany. Battle’s Over will begin at 6am with over 1,000 lone pipers playing Battle’s O’er (a traditional Scottish air played after a battle) outside cathedrals and other individual

Crowborough will be taking part as follows: 6.40pm – At Goldsmiths Recreation Ground (adjacent to the beacon) the Mayor of Crowborough will read the tribute, followed by the Royal British Legion who will read the names of the fallen. 6.55pm – The Last Post will sound. 7.00pm – The Mayor of Crowborough will light the Crowborough beacon. 7.05pm – The church bells will ring out across the town.

Environment Committee Report

Tribute to the Millions Let us remember those who so selflessly gave their lives at home and abroad, whose sacrifice enables us to enjoy the peace and freedom we have today. Let us remember those who came home wounded, physically and mentally, and the friends and family who cared for them. Let us remember those who returned to restore their relationships and rebuild their working lives after years of dreadful conflict and turmoil. Let us remember the families that lost husbands, sons and sweethearts. Let us remember the servicemen, merchant seamen, miners, brave civilians and others from Commonwealth and Allied countries who fought, suffered and died during four years of war. Let us remember those in reserved occupation and the brave people who kept us safe on the home front - the doctors and nurses who cared for the wounded, the women and men who toiled in the fields, those who worked in the factories, who all played such a vital role in the war effort at home.

New Equipment for Goldsmiths Recreation Ground This year, after many years of faithful service, we had to dismantle the ever-popular tyreswing at Goldsmiths Recreation Ground. However, this has given us the opportunity to replace it with a newer, even more exciting piece for the play park. At the recent meeting of the Sport, Recreation and Cemetery Committee it was decided to purchase a Rota Glide for the park. This will be installed over the winter period and we’re sure will give as many happy years of enjoyment as the old tyre swing did!

Remember to keep it personal

If you are signing a contract, then the other party to that contract may well be a limited company. That may all seem both fairly straight forward and above board. A limited company is a legal entity and so what is the risk? If the limited company defaults on any obligation under a contract, the other party to the contract has to, in the first instance, sue the limited company. That is where problems may arise. If a party owes money under a contract the claimant will, if successful, obtain a judgment ordering the defendant to pay a set amount.

The claimant may, ultimately, have to enforce the judgment by sending bailiffs around. If the limited company has neither assets nor money, the claimant is left with nothing to pursue. The company director is not personally responsible and so can walk away without liability. Don’t take the risk, if dealing with a limited company, make sure that the director gives you a personal guarantee so that you know that he is personally at risk if the company defaults. At Dawson Hart we can advise on taking and giving personal guarantees.

Mayor, Cllr Greg Rose, to our Christmas lunch on 8th December for over eighty of the town’s senior citizens. In the week leading up to Christmas, we will once again be around local streets with Santa Claus on our carol singing sleigh to enthral young children, and finally we have a collection for local charities in the town centre. Of course, all work and no play would make us very dull indeed, therefore club members will be attending their own Christmas lunch which is always great fun and an opportunity to relax in convivial surroundings. A very Happy Christmas and a Peaceful New Year to you all.” - David Martin, Crowborough Lions
