The Crowborough Magazine • March/April 2017

Note from the Editor... Dear Readers, 2017 is moving along at a fast pace already and the What’s On pages are getting busier with activities and events organised for the coming months. Before we know it we’ll be enjoying the spring bulbs and the ever changing countryside that surrounds us. I’d like to thank everyone for their feedback on the new look magazine, it really is appreciated and I’ve been delighted with how positive it’s all been. I know some of the regular readers will be wondering what decision I made with regards to the crosswords. Following an influx of comments from regular crossword solvers, I was dismayed to hear that it wasn’t being enjoyed anymore and was ‘boring’ and ‘uninspiring’. You’ll be pleased to see that I’ve got a different style of crossword and I’ll be keeping my fingers crossed that the entries will come flooding in again. As always, our crossword has a prize sponsor and I’d like to thank Thomas’ Professional Dog & Cat Grooming for donating a full groom for either a dog or cat as the next prize. They have recently moved from Maresfield to Crowborough and you can find them in Connors Yard (off Beeches Road). Turn to page 42 for this issue’s crossword puzzle - if you’ve not entered before, why not give it a go? I’ve also been very appreciative of the feedback from listeners of my weekly show, The Community Radio Show. I know there are quite a few of you here in Crowborough (it certainly helps having a magazine to promote it in). The show is all about community, charity and fundraising and is a great accompanient to having my community magazines. I have a fantastic time meeting new people, leaning about new things and developing my skills in the way of radio production. On a recent show I welcomed Pepenbury charity into the studio. I’ve seen their charity shop in the town centre but until now, never knew that much about what they did and who for. If you missed the show you can find the podcast on the website - www.thecommunityshow.net - look for show #88. If you’ve not had a chance to tune in, the show is broadcast live every Thursday from 10-11am and you can listen online at www.channelradio.co.uk. I can’t believe the momentum of the Crowborough Communtiy Festival, taking place from 1-27 May 2017. So many people who I speak to are doing something for it in one way or another. Festival Chairman, Denis Hart, has done a sterling job in getting so much support and he’s achieved such a huge amount already. Just look at the next page for a list of what has been booked to date and I’m sure we’ll see lots more events added to the calendar before the start of the festival too! 10 | www.crowborough-magazine.co.uk • info@crowborough-magazine.co.uk • 01732 864 878

Darwin House retirement home in touch with their family and friends.

It’s often a difficult subject to bring into conversation, when it’s time to think about the possibility of a retirement home, either for a family member or even admitting it to yourself. There are many choices of retirement properties available including flats and large specialist retirement homes but often the thought of moving out of a privately owned property into a large, sometimes with 40+ residents can be quite overwhelming. Darwin House in Jarvis Brook is a small, friendly retirement home with just 9 en-suite rooms. It is a charity and is run by a team of staff and volunteers with considerable experience who provide great support to the residents. Although much smaller than many other homes providing a similar service, residents are still able to remain independent and rooms can be furnished to individual tastes. Residents have access to a 24-hour emergency helpline and there is a live in housekeeper on site and communal areas and residents ensuites are cleaned regularly.

Loneliness can be a real issue for many elderly people and residents at Darwin House can enjoy the company of other residents. There are also monthly activities organised by volunteers who listen to the suggestions of residents so there is something for everyone to enjoy. Mealtimes are where residents can enjoy companionship on a daily basis and meals are cooked specifically to meet the special dietary requirements wherever necessary. All meals are home-cooked with a selection of fresh vegetables, prepared 7 days a week. The staff are always happy to show people around so if you would like to see the facilities and speak to staff and volunteers about the services and facilities offered at Darwin House, you can contact: Telephone: 01892 653 653 Email: abbeyfieldcrowborough@btinternet.com Address: Darwin House, Crowborough Hill, Crowborough, TN6 2JA Website: www.abbeyfieldcrowborough.co.uk

Residents can also enjoy WiFi throughout the home to stay better 16 | www.crowborough-magazine.co.uk • info@crowborough-magazine.co.uk • 01732 864 878

News from the Community Call for local artists

This will be the fourth year for Crowborough Arts Open Studios - a unique opportunity in Crowborough for artists and designers to show and sell their work to the public. All artists in the local area of Kent and East Sussex are invited to participate in the 2017 event, which takes place over the weekend of 2-3 September. There will be meetings for artists to find out how we can all work together to make the event a success, and to enable everyone to network and share their experiences: dates are 3 July and 7 August. The deadline to sign up for Open Studios is 30 March. An ‘Open Studio’ can be any suitable area of any size, belonging to you, or in arrangement with the owner - a garage, shed, outhouse,

summer house, porch, conservatory, hallway, room or part of a room, gazebos or tents outdoors, areas in public buildings etc. For those without their own venue, we work to help find venues to share. Our Open Studios team are all volunteers and are happy to work hard to make the event a success, and support artists in this process. We provide publicity: a brochure; posters; fliers; newsletter; Facebook; website; media publicity. It will be up to artists to supplement this publicity, by doing their own personal publicity, putting up posters and signs at the time of the event and distributing fliers and brochures prior to the event. New Town Clerk for Crowborough

Crowborough Town Council is delighted to welcome Mr Andy Beams as the new Town Clerk to the Council. Following a twenty-year career in retail banking Andy moved into the Local Government sector in 2010 as the Parish Clerk at Willingdon & Jevington Parish Council. Finding the role hugely enjoyable, and particularly enjoying working with the local community, he spent four years there before moving on to Battle Town Council in January 2015 as the Town Clerk. In November, he was appointed Town Clerk at Crowborough and says, “I am looking forward to working with the Councillors, staff and residents over the coming years. My first management role was in Crowborough back in the 1990s, and I am delighted to be back working in the town.” Andy now lives in Stone Cross, just outside Eastbourne, with his new wife Anna and two teenage children. Outside of work he enjoys spending time with his family and is a keen golfer. 21 | www.crowborough-magazine.co.uk • info@crowborough-magazine.co.uk • 01732 878 Crowborough Town Council Newsletter - Issue 1, 864 2017

Civic Awards The Town Council Civic Award scheme provides a way for the Council to thank and recognise those who have been working for our community. Recently two new recipients have been awarded Civic Awards: Leah Clark Ten year old Leah lives in Jarvis Brook and recently received her award from Mayor Ron Reed during one of her school assemblies. Although only ten Leah has been raising money and campaigning for charities for the past four years. Her work began with cake sales and a sponsored run, proceeds from which were donated to Crowboroughbased charity World in Need. This money was used to furnish and supply a school in Kenya and, seeing what her fundraising achieved, Leah was spurred on to further charity events including raising money for Demelza UK (who provide respite and hospice care for terminally ill children). Leah’s current endeavour sees her aiming to raise the grand total of £10,000 for World in Need so it can provide new school buildings for the school in Kenya. She has already planned some fundraising activities to help her on the way towards the grand total including a pool match, folk music night and grand raffle in association with Jarvis Brook Social Club. Dedicated and hard-working, thinking of others before herself, Leah is a worthy recipient of the Crowborough Civic Award. Suzi Mitchell In 2008 Suzi’s eleven year old son, Taylor Mitchell, was diagnosed with a serious medical condition. Following a courageous fight against the illness, and after attending hundreds of medical appointments,

undergoing many operations and three months of painful treatment in the USA, Taylor’s family were informed that his prognosis was terminal and that Taylor had just two years left to live. In 2009 Taylor and Suzi watched the film ‘Bucket List’; Suzi Mitchell receiving her award from Mayor a story about two Ron Reed cancer patients who write a bucket list of things they want to do before they die. They decided that they too wanted to write a bucket list, and they compiled a list of things Taylor wanted to do, people he wanted to meet and places he wanted to go. It was whilst fulfilling Taylor’s list that Suzi decided she would one day set up a charity to do the same for other children with life-limiting illnesses. In 2013 Suzi put her plan into action and Taylor Made Dreams became a registered charity in August 2014. The charity’s vision being that children with a life threatening conditions will have the opportunity to fulfil their dreams and that they may also provide the family with support by trained therapeutic professionals. Suzi’s care and commitment to other families in the same situation as hers, and her dedication to providing them with support and practical assistance, makes her a deserving recipient of the Crowborough Civic Award.

The Society of the Friends of Montargis Established to promote and further the relationship with our twinned town in France, The Society of the Friends of Montargis last year celebrated the 50th Anniversary of the twinning between Crowborough and Montargis. As part of the celebrations the society welcomed guests from France for several days’ worth of events and members from Crowborough also visited Montargis as part of the annual exchange programme. As well as these annual visits the society runs several local events for members during the year which, in 2016, included the popular race night, quiz night and garden party. 2017 will also see a full programme of events culminating in the festive Christmas dinner.

Calling all keen gardeners! As the spring approaches and the warmer weather beckons now is a great time to be thinking about getting an allotment. The allotment season starts again on 1st April 2017 and you could soon be working your own plot and enjoying the fruits of your labour. A few years ago, unable to meet the demand for its two existing allotment sites, Crowborough Town Council created a completely new site just outside the town. Owlsbury allotments have already been expanded once and encompass over 250 plots on previous farmland on the Hadlow Down Road, about half a mile outside of Jarvis Brook. The site is protected by a rabbit- and deer-proof fence and has a sizeable car park, composting toilet and plenty of water points. Standard plots are 10m x 4m in size and cost £28 per year. However, if you are particularly keen you may wish to rent more than one plot, or take one of our supersized plots which measure 10m x 16m. Complete beginners who want to find out what vegetable growing is all about can choose to experiment with a half plot (5m x 4m) and later graduate to something bigger. Half plots also suit people with very little time but who really want to grow something. Like the other two allotment sites, Herne and Pilmer, Owlsbury has its own allotment tenants’ society, run by tenants for the benefit of tenants. Membership is optional and for a nominal sum per year

the society provides discounts negotiated with gardening retailers, social gettogethers, bulk-bought manure from local farmers, use of communal machinery, advice and mentoring. At the present time there are a number of plots available at Owlsbury and you could begin growing and enjoying all the benefits of an allotment with the new season. The ever-popular sites at Herne Road and Pilmer Road currently have waiting lists and, if you would prefer to have an allotment at these sites, please contact us and we will add your name to the list. For further information, to apply for a plot at Owlsbury or to put your name on the waiting lists for the Herne or Pilmer allotment sites, either complete the online application form at: www.crowboroughtowncouncil.gov.uk call 01892 652907 or visit the Town Hall in person.

The Ghyll Nature Reserve Have you discovered The Ghyll yet? Situated in the heart of our town, stretching from the Silver Jubilee Recreation Ground on Green Lane all the way across to Burdett Road in Jarvis Brook, this nature reserve is one of the jewels of Crowborough. At just over forty two acres the site is comprised mainly of Ancient Semi-Natural Woodland (ASNW) and encompasses a steep-sided wooded valley carved out by a beautiful tumbling stream which flows through its length. Like our other nature reserves The Ghyll is managed on a day-to-day basis by our Ranger and he has been working hard over the winter in order improve the area for both walkers and wildlife. In particular this winter has seen him focussing on making improvements to some of the wettest and muddiest walkways and reducing the amount of holly and bramble alongside the main paths.

display of bluebells in the centre of The Ghyll. So, if you haven’t already done so, why not make the most of the warmer weather to come and take a walk through this special nature reserve?

Bracken/bluebell glades in the centre of The Ghyll (April 2016). Bluebells are a very important early source of nectar for many insect species such as bees, hoverflies and butterflies.

The season has also seen significant work to control the amount of bracken in the central glades and pony meadows. If left unmanaged bracken will quickly suppress the bluebells and other wildflowers and grasses. This not only makes a walk through the area less enjoyable, but also leads to a significant reduction in the nesting and feeding opportunities for wildlife such as birds, insects, amphibians and small mammals. This management work should mean that spring 2017 will see a spectacular Crowborough Town Council Newsletter - Issue 1, 2017

Rail Services The ongoing rail dispute and overall quality of rail services in the region is a huge concern to Crowborough Chamber, the public, businesses and other Chambers in the area. The Sussex Chamber of Commerce and The Alliance of Chambers in East Sussex, (Crowborough Chamber is a member of both), have made approaches to The Government, Unions and Southern Rail to apply pressure in a bid for a resolution to the situation. Chambers from across the region have given specific examples of where the on going disruption is having a detrimental impact on businesses and employees with some commuters struggling to pay their rent due to loss of earnings and businesses having to cover the cost of lost earnings and disruption. The current stalemate and quality of service on non strike days is not a situation which can be allowed to continue and Chambers in the area will persevere with their pressure on the parties involved.

Fun Day 2017 Crowborough Chamber is delighted to announce that the Summer Fun Day 2017 will be taking place in Crowborough Town Centre on Saturday 3rd June. This event is always a popular day in the calendar with thousands of people enjoying the free entertainment and the chance to peruse stalls from businesses from the area.

This year we look forward to welcoming Italia in Piazza as our guest market and we are sure locals will enjoy sampling their fare. Booking for stalls will commence at the beginning of March and anyone interested in taking part in the day can contact the Chamber Secretary by email secretary@crowboroughchamber.co.uk. You can always find out more about your local chamber of commerce on the website at: www.crowboroughchamber.co.uk

Appearances Aesthetics If you are a regular reader of this magazine, you may recall that over the last several months I have been receiving treatments from experienced Aesthetic Therapist Gillian Huntley of Appearances Aesthetics, who has been working in the industry for over 30 years, specialising in Advanced Aesthetics for more than 15 of those. Although her own clinic is in Chisleurst, she treats many of her local clients (often as a result from these features) at Options Beauty Salon in nearby Edenbridge. There are many treatments Gillian can carry out for her clients which, as well as boosting confidence, can also transform their lives. So far I have undergone: semi-permanent eyeliner, skin tag and red vein removal, clear mole removal and scar reduction treatments. Gillian also performs:  medical and semi-permanent tattooing  thread vein/pigmentation removal  scar relaxation  skin peels with Image Skincare The treatment I am having done for this feature is one of the most popular that Gillian performs. I am having eyebrow tattooing or “WoW Brows” as Gillian has nicknamed them. There may be a number of reasons why you might consider having your eyebrows tattooed such as: over plucking, cancer treatments resulting in loss of hair, pale brow hairs or simply to redefine the shape of what you currently have. The first part of the treatment is to decide on the shape of your new brows and it’s not a rush job. In fact, more than half the time I spent with Gillian (about an hour) was getting the shape right before the procedure could start.

Gillian uses a special measuring device to make sure your eyebrows are the same size although, NEW SHAPE she said, “Eyebrows should never be twins, they should be sisters.” - more often than not our faces are not symmetrical so it would be OLD SHAPE almost impossible to have them identical anyway! In order that I could have a better visual as to how they could potentially look Gillian used a light pencil to go over the hairs that would be removed. Once agreed, the next step was to select the most suitable colour, the closest match to my natural brow hair and which would also work with my hair colour. Having created so many WoW Brows over the years Gillian has a keen eye to matching colours to her clients so the end results looks as natural as possible. Once I was happy with the shape, I then had numbing cream applied to make the procedure more comfortable. I may have looked a bit like an Ooompa Loompa but I know from my previous treatments that this cream is very effective. Next Gillian removed the stray hairs from around my eyebrows (although not touching the whited out part at this stage in case I changed my mind). After that she began tattooing the fine hair strokes onto my brows and gradually I could see the new, more defined shape forming. One of the final things she did was pluck out the hairs that had formed part of my original eyebrows. So what does it feel like? Well, thanks to the effects of the numbing cream all I could feel was an uncomfortable sensation but no pain.

Transforming the way we look Part 5 A couple of times throughout the process Gillian reapplied the numbing cream to one brow while she worked on the other brow. There was a redness following the treatment which was to be expected but it soon disappeared. The healing process is very straightforward. Gillian runs through the after care and you receive a sachet of vitamin A & D ointment to help the healing process. After about four days, scabs which had formed on my eyebrows had disappeared and the only telltale sign was a few dry skin patches across my brow. You can see how they look in the before and

after pictures below. I feel like I have received an eye-lift! I will require a touchup appointment in one month to ensure full evenness of colour and I can’t wait - this must be my favourite treatment so far! BEFORE - EYE BROWS

AFTER - WoW BROWS

If you would like to arrange a consultation with Gillian or book an appointment for WoW Brows (or any other of her treatments), call her on 07711 067 789 or email her at: gillian@appearancesaestheticsco.uk. You can also find more information at: www.appearancesaesthetics.co.uk or find her on social media.

News from the Community Crowborough Community Festival UPDATE “Another busy month for the Festival organisers as May gets ever closer. We had great news in January, hearing that our Big Lottery Fund application had been successful. Together with the support of Crowborough Town Council and some local businesses, the festival’s finances are now looking healthy. The Lost World Day on Bank Holiday Monday 1st May is gearing up to be a really exciting and fun event for all the family. The Iguanodon Restaurant, a highly talented group of theatre Performers, will be bringing their original blend of humour and story- telling to the festival. This is an experience not-to-bemissed. With so many other activities planned for the day, including the Dinosaur Roar workshop, we have had to move the event to Goldsmith’s Recreation Grounds as we needed more outside space.

Concerned about your home being sold to fund your future care fees? The Issue

You probably own your home as joint tenants if you are a couple and solely if you are single. For couples this means you own it wholly, jointly and severally. Ultimately therefore you do not own it 50:50 as you might have assumed. You actually own all of it together and when one partner dies the surviving partner owns it solely and absolutely. It is sole and absolute ownership that enables a whole property to be taken into consideration as an asset by the local authority and puts the property in danger of needing to be sold to fund care.

The Reality Today

The care Act 2014 introduced in April 2015 allows local authorities to assess your assets to determine if you need to pay for your own care under the new charges and assessment of resources regulations. Currently if you have assets above £23,250, you are on your own and require care, you will probably have to pay for it all currently averaging around £1,000 per week. Savings, cash and income would be used first and then your property would need to be taken into consideration. You would be expected to pay for all of your care until such time as your assets were depleted to below the £23,250 threshold. You would then pay for a proportion of your care until your assets were below £14,250 - at which point all your future care would be paid for after any relevant income was taken into account.

The Solution

For couples, simply by changing the way you own your property well in advance of any care considerations i.e. from joint tenants to tenants in common and by setting up two property Trusts either immediately or within a properly structured Will at the same time will in most cases, protect the integrity of your home should you ever require care in the future, so long as avoiding care fees was not a primary motivating reason behind the implementation fo the strategy - i.e. you should be looking to protect your half of your property should your spouse remarry after your death, or you should be looking to ensure that your children would not lose 50% of their inheritance should they be made bankrupt or divorce or for example you should be looking to prevent a generational inheritance tax burden in the future. These are all sound reasons for implementing this strategy which in themselves are not deliberate deprivation of assets, but the implemantation of which protects the integrity of the property. For sole owners the process is simply to set up a Trust now and convey your property into it which will produce the same result again this must be well in advance of any care considerations and the motivation must not solely be for the purpose of preventing your home being used to fund your care.

The Reasoning

When you own your home as tenants in common you actually own half each. With our Post death Property Protection Package when the first partner dies, they leave their half into their Trust. The surviving partner is the Trustee of that Trust and also the Primary Beneficiary which means that as they own half and are Trustee of the other half they have complete control over the property and what happens to it. The children and/or whoever else is also nominated as ultimate Trust Beneficiaries will have access to that half of the property when the surviving partner dies. The first half of the property then is 100% securely in Trust for the beneficiaries and will not be at risk. As a result of this simple strategy and because it is not possible to sell just the survivor’s half of the property, the integrity of the property is protected. While the ‘’market value” of half a property is negligible, The Care Act 2014 guidelines do allow for this half to have a charge placed on it under a deferred payment arrangement for care fees which is why this package includes a Lasting Power of Attorney grant for Property and Financial affairs which will enable a preappointed Attorney to act on behalf of the survivor should they be unable to themselves and negotiate with the Local Authority for the property to be rented out and a percentage of the income given to the Local Authority instead of a charge being placed. The second half of the property would then ultimately go into the Trust for access by the nominated beneficiaries when the surviving partner eventually dies. With our Whole of Life and Post Death Complete Property and Family Protection Package both halves of the property are conveyed into Trust IMMEDIATELY. This means the whole property is protected straight away and not just after the first party dies. The benefits of this package are that it then protects the property even if both parties go into care before the death of either. It also means that if the survivor goes into care the property does not have to be rented but if it is 100% of the income goes directly into the Trusts for the benefit of the survivor or any of the other Trust Beneficiaries and does not have to be given to the Local Authority. The most important benefit of this package though is the property can be sold at any time and the resulting proceeds be fully protected for the whole family within the Trusts and no negotiation with the Local Authority is required. Sole owners and couples who have immediately conveyed their properties into Trust well in advance of any care consideration and not solely for the purpose of preventing their home being used to fund their care (deliberate deprivation of assets) secures the integrity of the property (so long as entry into care is not within 6 months of setting up the strategy) as the property is not absolutely owned by an individual anymore and it is not legal to force a Trustee to do something that is not in the ultimate best interest of the Trust Beneficiaries.
