The Crowborough Magazine • January/February 2019

Note from the Editor... Dear Readers,

Happy New Year! I hope you’ve all been enjoying the festivities this season, taking time off work where possible and spending time with family and friends. I think there are many who will be glad to see the end of 2018, it hasn’t been the easiest of years, even for me. My own mother has been showing signs of ageing and requires much more support than before. I’m glad to have a great circle of friends for support as many are going through similar experiences as we are all of a similar age. I’m so pleased to say that in December The Crowborough Magazine turned 12 years old. I can’t quite believe I’ve been running it for so long. It all started shortly after I launched my first magazine in Edenbridge and started to receive letters from residents here who wanted a similar publication for Crowborough. I love producing my magazines and am so pleased at how well they are still received within their local communities. I’m also delighted with the number of advertisers who have been with me for years as they find it helps grow their businesses locally. There really is a wide range of advertisers here and I always make my magazines my first point of call if I require any services, whether it be a builder, solicitor, gardener, beauty treatments or anything else. I’d like to thank The Old Fire Station for sponsoring the crossword this month. I love all the energy Phil puts into running the place and bringing new ideas to his café. It’s nice to see he also takes some time out to read the premier publication in Crowborough as well. You can even find me there on the odd occasion when I get to take a breather while rushing around visiting advertisers and friends. I was recently there with Jenny Rickwood from Guest’s Shoe Services to enjoy the Remembrance themed cakes Phil had in store in November. As always, please do mention ‘The Crowborough Magazine’ if you are responding to anything you’ve seen in this publication as it helps to secure it’s future. Until next time...

Here for you when you need us

Finding a Will

The problem of finding a Will when someone dies can cause significant problems and can result in the wrong people administering the estate and assets passing to the wrong people. So what can you do to prevent this happening? Here are a few simple steps that can be taken. 1. Store your original Will with your solicitor. They will be able to answer any queries about the existence of the Will after someone has died. 2. Tell your executors that you have made a Will and where

it is kept. You do not need to tell them the contents of the Will, unless you wish to do so. 3. Tell family and friends that you have made a Will and where it is kept. Again, you do not need to tell them what is in the Will. 4. Keep a copy of your Will in an accessible place at home with a note of where the original is held. 5. Register your Will with www.certainty.co.uk. If you store your Will with a Solicitor they will be able

01825 762281

to register it with this online voluntary Will registration service. For any further information concerning Wills, please contact Jenny Mayhew at Dawson Hart on: 01825 762281 or via email at jm@dawson-hart.co.uk We are proud to provide a service which is centred on experienced, expert and approachable solicitors of a high calibre. Claire Nash Solicitors When it comes to getting legal advice, it’s always difficult to know where to go, particularly when it’s required for matters of a more sensitive nature. Local solicitor, Claire Nash, understands the stress that going through any legal matter can cause, which is why she will do what she can to make the process as stress free as possible for her clients - whether it’s making a will, obtaining equity release, marital affairs or administrating a loved one’s estate. Claire also understands the importance of being flexible to meet her clients and offers an out of hours, home visit service if required, be it during office hours, evenings or at weekends.

Wills

It is estimated that over 60% of the adult population in the UK do not have a will. It is not as complicated as people may think - a simple Will can be surprisingly inexpensive, even when drafted by a qualified solicitor. To not have a Will in place could mean your assets may not go to your chosen beneficiaries.

Matrimonial Matters

If you are considering divorce or separation, or if you’ve received a divorce petition from your spouse or civil partner, please come and talk to us. Claire offers a free initial consultation where you are able to discuss the process and issues which concern you most. You’ll be able to ascertain whether any further professional input is necessary and this initial consultation is offered on a no obligation basis. You’ve got nothing to lose by speaking to Claire first.

Equity Release

Part of effective inheritance tax planning can sometimes involve obtaining an equity release mortgage on your property. This would allow you to remain in your home whilst you enjoy a lump sum payment, perhaps for home

improvements, a luxury purchase or as a gift to a loved one for a deposit on a home for example. You should always seek advice from a qualified independent financial advisor to take you through your options before engaging the services of an equity release solicitor.

Lasting Power of Attorney

A Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) is a legal document that allows you to appoint a person(s) to make decisions about matters concerning you if you ever become unable to make those decisions yourself. It gives you the chance to appoint those you know and trust to make decisions that are in your best interests when you are at your most vulnerable.

Probate

Probate may be required when a loved one passes away. Essentially it means the accessing and distribution of the person’s estate according to their Will (if they left one) or according to the law of intestacy (if they did not leave a Will). You will not need to pay money up front on a probate matter - fees and disbursements are paid from the estate monies when they become available. If you find yourself in need of legal advice in any of the above matters, remember Claire Nash Solicitors aim to provide you with the highest professional service and advice, whilst always being approachable, personal, caring and committed to helping you achieve your desired outcomes, and they’re local. Call Claire Nash Solicitors on 01892 731 082 or email info@clairenashsolicitors.co.uk. www.clairenashsolicitors.co.uk

News from the Community St. John’s pupils changing the world “St. John’s pupils have taken part in the first round of the Roar Project, chosen by Crowborough Lions to represent them. This phenomenal project has involved pupils generating ideas for an invention that would change the world. All Year 6 pupils took part in the in-school competition, all designing a poster, jingle and making a model.

They represented Crowborough at the South East Regional Final at Wakehurst Place which took place on Friday 7th December 2018, against other Primary Schools from Kent, Sussex and Surrey. “ - St. John’s CE School

Roar 2018 is a school competition created by Lions Clubs International and the ideas company 7 Billion Ideas. It aims to unlock the creative spirit in every child by giving them the time to imagine and develop ideas that could change the world! The children have generated astonishing ideas from inventions that would help blind people, reduce the use of plastic and save electricity to name a few. The winning team (pictured) had a fantastic idea involved reducing electricity and water

Lions provide teaching aids to local school Crowborough and District Lions have now provided Lifeskills Resources to four local schools, the latest being Mark Cross C of E Primary. These are teaching aids for Primary Schools and are ‘I Am, I Know, I Can’, specifically written for PSHE Education and ‘Life Changes’ which is to help teachers deal with the difficult situation of children who have break-ups or bereavements in their families. Lions International of the UK own Lions Lifeskills who specialise in Educational Resources for all school age children. They are available directly to schools and youth groups or, as is often the case, the local Lions club will provide them as part of their Community Service.

Why advertise in The Crowborough Magazine Why advertise your business in The Crowborough Magazine? Quite simply, it works for the majority of businesses you see featured each issue, many of who have been advertising for years! If you want to build your local customer base, increase your profits and make sure the local community knows about your business, advertising in this magazine can really help. The Crowborough Magazine attracts both large and small businesses who want to promote their services locally, with costs kept low to offer excellent value advertising. Smaller businesses, especially those without a ‘shop front’, can promote their services in a quality publication to the people who want to use them.

There are some great reasons to give it a go! Targeted audience: The magazine is delivered to over 11,000 homes and businesses in the TN6 area by Royal Mail every other month. Great value: Prices are kept low so that small businesses can make the most of their advertising budget and appear over a number of issues. It’s a fact that a sustained campaign works better at increasing sales than a one-off advert. All advertisers featured in each issue are listed on the magazine’s website - www.crowborough-magazine.co.uk - giving your business even more exposure. Good Service: From your initial enquiry, we will help you choose the best advertising package for your business according to your budget. We will make sure you have an eye-catching advert with a clear message about your business. Results: We want your advertising to work for you and we will do our best to make sure you get the most out of your campaign. About 80% of the businesses featured in this magazine are repeat advertisers! A good read: The magazine contains interesting local articles, useful information and listings of local events alongside the business advertising. Residents hold onto the magazines until the next issue arrives so that your advert is seen again and again. It’s been around since 2006 and is a well established part of every household.
