The Crowborough Magazine • September/October 2018

Note from the Editor... Dear Readers, September is almost upon us and a new term will be starting at the local schools. Of course when the schools go back it also means the start of the Sussex bonfire and carnival season which kicks off on Saturday 1st September with Uckfield being the first of the Sussex towns to hold their annual carnival and procession. Crowborough will be celebrating their 70th Anniversary this year. You can read all about it on page 26. If you’re new to the Sussex area then Saturday 8th September is a date not to be missed. Make a note in your diaries now before you continue reading any further! Please do bear in mind that there will be road closures in place around Chapel Green during the afternoon and along the procession route in the evening. Carnival Programmes will be available to purchase from local outlets closer to the time for full information on the event. A few weeks after the Crowborough Bonfire & Carnival is the turn of Rotherfield & Mark Cross Carnival, on Saturday 22nd September - double bonfire fun during the month! In fact there’s plenty of events taking place over the next couple of months, including the Crowborough Festival in October, so make sure to have a look at the What’s On guide on page 16. If you belong to a local group or organisation and are holding a fundraising event, don’t forget it’s FREE to list your event in the What’s On guide. Simply drop me an email at info@crowborough-magazine.co.uk with the details and it will appear in the relevant calendar so your events get as much coverage as possible. I’d like to thank the crossword sponsor for this issue, J&K Gallery, who are giving away £75.00 worth of picture framing to the lucky winner. J&K can frame just about anything, objects as well as traditional pictures and paintings. What special keepsake do you have which you’d like to have preserved in a frame? Don’t forget, if you’ve got something you’d like to share with the readers of The Crowborough Magazine, then please let me know. All the community information is included in here free of charge. The next issue is for November/December and it will be distributed week commencing 29th October. The copy deadline for content submissions is Friday 5th October.

News from the Community Crowborough Community Church is moving home Crowborough Community Church, one of several Christian churches in our town, is moving home. For the past 6 years, the church has been renting the Community Centre for its Sunday services, but recently, renovation work has been carried out on the Oasis, the church building at the crossroads opposite the fire station. This Victorian chapel, bestowed by Lady DeLannoy in 1889, was transferred to the Community Church a number of years ago, and is considered one of the architectural highlights of the town centre. The renovation going on at the property will enable the church to hold public Sunday services there, along with the Monday morning drop in café, the Wednesday afternoon babies and toddlers group, and a number of other small meetings already taking place in the building. This September the church will start an Alpha Course, designed to enable enquirers to ask and explore the big questions of life. ‘This current work enables us to move our Sunday services to the Oasis, centralising all our work into the one place’ said Jonathan

Hayward, the Team Leader of the church. ‘We’re very excited about the possibilities of new ventures here which will help us serve Crowborough more effectively’. Crowborough Community Church is part of a worldwide family of churches called Newfrontiers, begun in the 1970s in Brighton. This church family affirms the ‘orthodox position’ of many Protestant churches whilst presenting its message in a more contemporary way. On Saturday 15th September the church will hold an open day from 11am to 3pm, where the town Mayor, Greg Rose, will formally open the building at 2.45pm. All are welcome to pop in and take a look. Mr Hayward added: ‘It’s hard to believe that Crowborough Community Church is 21 years old now. We hope and pray we will remain part of this wonderful town, and continue to contribute to its rich and diverse heritage’. www.crowcomchurch.org.uk

Crowborough Bonfire & Carnival Society September may seem like an unusual month to start celebrating Bonfire Night but in Sussex it marks the start of the Bonfire Season. All the societies across Sussex (and two in Kent) take it in turns to host their annual torch lit processions, ending with a firework display, from September to November each year. This year is a big year for the Crowborough Bonfire & Carnival Society (CBCS) as they are celebrating 70 years and of course this anniversary will be celebrated at their 2018 event to be held on Saturday 8th September.

leading the procession and also putting on a display before the procession leaves Chapel Green. Enjoy this as well as all the spectacular costumes from the various floats and tableau entries taking part in the procession. Make sure you have plenty of change in your pockets as you’ll hear the rattle of collection buckets as the procession passes by to raise funds to support local charities - this year the charities are:  Crowborough Community First Responders  Crowborough Darby & Joan Club  Crowborough Citizens Advice Bureau  Crowborough Care for the Carers

CBCS was originally formed in 1897 when a group of people met at the Bricklayers Arms on Whitehill Road and organised the annual event until the start of WW1. It wasn’t until 1948 that the society reformed after representatives from the Royal British Legion and the Whitehill Sport Club got together and it’s been held annually ever since.

As you can imagine, organising an event of this size takes time and plenty of money to put on. There are 20 committee members who oversee organisation of the event and they recruit volunteers to assist on the evening with marshalling etc.

The event will kick off at 1.30pm on Chapel Green with plenty of children’s entertainment, stalls, refreshments and much more, including a Brass Band performance.

If you’d like to find out more about the society or even get involved in the committee, contact Nigel on 07880 880 160 or email Nickie at nickie.cbcs@btinternet.com

The evening’s entertainment will start at 6pm where you’ll also see many of the visiting Bonfire Societies joining in. It’s a great atmosphere and you’ll see many other Bonfire Societies supporting each other at their local events.

You can also follow the Society on Facebook ‘Crowborough Bonfire & Carnival Society’ and keep up to date with information on the main carnival as well as other fundraising events they hold throughout the year.

CBCS are delighted to announce that this year will see the Bournemouth Carnival Band

Business Page Mead House & Pine Grove Developments The Crowborough Chamber of Commerce was saddened but not surprised to hear of the parking issues caused by the recent closure by developers of the Mead House Car Park. The Chamber fully supports the need for more affordable housing on appropriate sites in Crowborough but believes that the Mead House car park was best kept as much needed parking for the town and objected to the planning application on these grounds. Now that the development has been agreed The Chamber will continue to work with Wealden District Council to ensure they fulfil their promise to provide compensatory parking places in the Croft Road car park and a pedestrian crossing to allow easier movement in the area. It is encouraging to finally see activity at the Pine Grove Enterprise site, we hope the work progresses swiftly and we look forward to the business amenity opening as soon as possible.

Chamber Social Events As well as representing business in local and national issues and acting as a conduit between members and government, The Crowborough Chamber of Commerce gives members the chance to meet and socialise with other business people in the area in an informal, relaxed atmosphere. Our recent Summer BBQ was one of these events and was enjoyed by those who attended, in the setting of St John’s Hall on a lovely warm evening and delicious food from The Fire Station Cafe complemented the atmosphere. We also hold an annual cheese and wine evening which is always a hit with both members and guests alike.

For more information on The Chamber and how to join please see our website: www.crowboroughchamber.co.uk
