The Crowborough Magazine • July/August 2018

Note from the Editor... Dear Readers, Where does the time go? It feels like only a few days ago I was putting together the last issues and now here we are and summer is finally upon us, the flowers are coming out and the grass is needing a lot of mowing to keep it under control. I’ve been trying my hand at making Elderflower cordial for the first time which has been a fun little project and the first batch hasn’t been too bad. I think I might move onto Elderflower Champagne next! There’s something extremely satisfying about making your own products from produce from your land. How many of you went to the Fun Day at the beginning of June? It seemed the whole town had turned up to Crowborough Town Centre for the event and I want to say well done to the local Crowborough & District Chamber of Commerce for another well organised event. It is completely put together by volunteers from the local chamber for the community. I took my partner Joe along for his first Fun Day visit and we thought Teddie (the dog) would enjoy coming out with us. Teddie would like to thank everyone for all the attention she received on her walk up and down the High Street. She certainly is a head turner! I currently have my big brother staying with me for a few weeks and I took him on his very first visit to Crowborough during the Business Expo a couple of months ago and introduced him to fellow members of the local chamber and also some of my advertisers who were exhibiting there. Pictured left is me with Claire Nash who I met for the first time. After the Expo I thought I would take him for lunch in the town centre so we stopped at my favourite venue, the Crowborough Old Fire Station and enjoyed some hot food. I think it’s a fabulous place to visit and you need to keep your eye out for some of the events they have on. If you missed the Fun Day then fear not, the Summer Fair is on Saturday 7th July from 1-5pm. It’s another great afternoon out for residents and visitors alike. I’m really looking forward to the aerial acrobatic show (I get vertigo so I’m always impressed at anything that is done at great heights). I don’t think I’ll be challenging Adrian Smith who came 5th in the World’s Strongest Man but it would be interesting to see if anyone can beat him in a challenge. For full details on the Summer Fair, look at the Crowborough Town Council Newsletter which is included in the centre pages of this issue. 10 | www.crowborough-magazine.co.uk • info@crowborough-magazine.co.uk • 01732 864 878

News from the Community Community Centre chef puts taste and ethically produced food at heart of Gallery Café Crowborough Community Centre is excited to announce the arrival of chef, Alex Armstrong, who is working with our Gallery Café team to develop their skills. Alex has worked with well-known restaurants such as The Roof Top Café and A Little of What You Fancy in London. She has also volunteered at Haywards Heath Food Bank and taught cooking and nutrition to community groups. Alex’s interest in working with the community and her passion for demonstrating how delicious meals from high quality seasonal and ethical produce is possible at affordable prices, has motivated her to join the team at Crowborough Community Centre. She is on a mission to source food which supermarkets tend to overlook but which does not compromise on taste, such as wonky fruit and vegetables and small eggs from young hens. Alex will also approach our Horticultural Group to source fresh vegetables direct from their allotments. Straws, napkins and so on made of recyclable materials will also be introduced. Tonnes of perfectly edible food from farms and supermarkets ends up in landfill. Not only is this a waste of good food, it is also a waste of the resources used to produce it – from the water, heat and fertilisers used in the growing process, to the energy consumed during its transportation. A full cafe service, including lunch, is available Monday- Friday 9:30am to 2:30pm - Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays 9:30am to 3pm - Wednesdays and Fridays. Last food orders 2:15pm.

Friends of Crowborough Hospital We’re fast approaching the August Bank Holiday and if you’ve been in the area for a while you’ll know that Crowborough Hospital will be hosting it’s annual Bank Holiday Fête, organised by the Friends Volunteers Jackie Bradford and of Crowborough Terry Moon Hospital. It’s one of those things that we always remember during the August Bank Holiday but seem to forget throughout the rest of the year - the Friends of Crowborough Hospital Shop which is on site and is open Mondays to Fridays from 10am until 4pm. The shop was started by volunteer members of FOCH in the late 1990s to give patients, staff and visitors alike somewhere to purchase items such as gifts, snacks and toiletries or their way in or out of the hospital, whether working, volunteering or visiting.

It’s location makes it simple to find when you’re visiting the hospital, it’s in the foyer on your way into the building so you don’t have far to go once you’re on the grounds. It’s such a simple way to support the Friends of Crowborough Hospital as all profits generated from the shop go straight towards the benefit of the hospital. FOCH are keen to remind everyone that the shop is there for some of the essential items you might need and just by making a few purchases from the shop regularly will help ensure it’s survival. It’s a phrase we hear all too often these days, ‘use it, or lose it’. There are currently 40 volunteers who manage and run the shop and they love having customers as it makes their time in the shop much more enjoyable. FOCH are always happy to listen to your suggestions, so if you have any ideas on potential stock, or would like to volunteer, please do get in touch with them. So, the next time you’re looking for a gift or card or even a new plant for your patio, pop along to the Friends of Crowborough Hospital Shop and you’ll be pleasantly surprised. It’s not just open on hospital fête day but throughout the rest of the year too!

Some items are donated such as the knitted baby clothing and tea cosies (hand made by a supporter of FOCH), toys, books and a selection Web: www.foch.org.uk | Tel: 01892 664 626 of local produce from fresh eggs and honey Bank Holiday Monday 27th August to jam and cakes. Other stock is brought in Crowborough Hospital Fête - 2pm-5pm especially, such as the toiletries.

Your town needs you!

Are you interested in becoming a Town Councillor? make such a huge difference to quality of life for people in your local area. What is expected of a councillor? A councillor’s role and responsibilities include things such as: • Representing the ward for which they are elected • Decision-making • Developing and reviewing council policy • Community leadership and engagement What matters to you in Crowborough? Is it the parks and recreation grounds, the need for more activities for young people, the town’s nature reserves, the allotments, the cemeteries – or any of the many other areas the town council manages and maintains? Whatever it is, why not get involved by becoming a town councillor? Elections will take place in May 2019 for the new Town Council. Perhaps you are already involved in local affairs and want to take the next step. Or you may be looking for a worthwhile and rewarding way to help your local community. There are approximately 20,000 local councillors in England, each representing their local community and all with their own reason for doing so. No other role gives you a chance to

Do I need any special skills or experience to be a councillor? No! It is important that councils have councillors who not only reflect and represent the communities they serve, but also have a broad range of skills and life experience. You don’t have to be highly educated or have a profession. Skills gained through raising a family, caring for others, volunteering, or being active in faith or community groups can be just as valuable. Whilst you don’t need any special qualifications to be a councillor, having or being able to develop the following skills, knowledge and attributes will help you in the role: • Communication skills • Problem solving and analytical skills • Team working • Organisational skills • Ability to engage with your local community

Crowborough Town Council Newsletter - Issue 3, 2018

Environment Committee Report Becoming a Town Councillor continued... Who can be a councillor? Almost anyone can be a local councillor, as long as you are: • British or a citizen of the Commonwealth or European Union • At least 18 years old • Registered to vote in the area or have lived, worked or owned property there for at least 12 months before an election. However, you cannot be a councillor if you: • Work for the council you want to be a councillor for, or for another local authority in a politically restricted post • Are the subject of a bankruptcy restrictions order or interim order • Have been sentenced to prison for three months or more (including suspended sentences) during the five years before election day • Have been convicted of a corrupt or illegal practice by an election court. If you are in any doubt about whether you are eligible to stand as a councillor, you should contact the returning officer in the electoral services department at Wealden District Council for advice. Do I have to be a member of a political party? No. You can either stand as an independent candidate, or as a group or party political candidate. The political parties in your local area are already looking for people interested in representing them and will be pleased to hear from you. They will be able to support your election campaign and your work as a councillor. Don’t worry if you’re not already a party member as they will be able to go through all the options with you. Some parties have special training and encouragement schemes for new candidates. Some places have organised residents’ associations or community groups which put candidates up for election. Alternatively you can stand as an independent candidate. For further information on how to

do this, please contact Electoral Services at Wealden District Council. I may be interested in standing for election next May – what do I do now? In the first instance you may want to call us here at the Town Hall; we can give you more detailed advice and/or arrange for you to speak with the Town Clerk: - info@crowboroughtowncouncil.gov.uk - 01892 652907 Alternatively you can contact the Electoral Services team at Wealden District Council to register your interest, and they will send you a nomination pack in March 2019: - elections@wealden.gov.uk - 01892 602407 Finally, you can find more information about becoming a councillor on the following government websites: www.gov.uk/government/get-involved/takepart/become-a-councillor www.beacouncillor.co.uk

…Ranger’s Update…Ranger’s update…Ranger’s around the Country Park can be quite steep and bumpy in places, which means that to do the whole circular path might still be limited to only those chairs which are designed for rougher terrain. The new gates have opened up access to much more of the reserve so that beautiful wildlife, such as this gorgeous Peacock butterfly (pictured below), can be viewed and admired. Why not come along and visit this special nature reserve, set in the heart of Crowborough, for yourself?

Over the past year our Ranger, Daniel, has been working to improve access to the Country Park for visitors and residents who use wheelchairs. There are now ramps on both of the footbridges and, in April, we introduced two new wheelchair-friendly kissing gates into the reserve. The new gates can be opened fully for wheelchairs using a radar key, or they can be used in the standard way by other pedestrians.

The Ranger would welcome feedback from any wheelchair users who visit the reserve. Feedback could relate to any aspect of the reserve which could be improved in order to make the experience easier or more enjoyable. This would allow us to consider further improvements. The gates now allow access into the reserve from the Osborne Road Car Park and also from the Montargis estate via the main entrance on Tollwood Road. The pathway

UNREGISTERED RIGHTS OF WAY Can You Help? Do you know of any unregistered rights of way (footpaths, ‘cut-throughs’, alleys or bridleways) in or around Crowborough? Following the introduction of The Deregulation Act 2015, there is now a cut-off date by which all such paths must be registered, or face being lost. In particular, this concerns any rights of way that existed pre-1949 and are therefore not on any council maps, or any more recent cut-throughs or ‘muddy paths’.

If you know of any such unregistered rights of way that you believe should be registered, please contact the Town Hall on (01892) 652907 or email info@crowboroughtowncouncil.gov.uk, providing the location and any other details you may have. Thank you for your help!

Crowborough’s Secret Stones Crowborough Secret Stones are proving a great success in getting Crowborough residents out walking and exploring their local area. Not only are residents in and around Crowborough finding beautifully painted stones by fellow residents, but we’re also taking part in a collective arts project! It’s a national craze that is sweeping the nation, with many groups being set-up in local towns and villages. The idea is simple, just decorate a stone and hide in your local area (or in another location). If you find one, then take a picture, post in the Facebook Group and re-hide for someone else to find. Crowborough Families were lucky enough to host free workshops for the local community over Easter. All thanks to Millbrook Garden Centre, The Amazing Craft Company and Artytime, who kindly donated stones, paints/ tools and man power to get the community painting. We had over 80 families take part and it’s been great seeing people share their stones painted and ones found in the ‘Crowborough’s Secret Stones’ Facebook Page which is open to anyone wanting to join.

don’t need to be sealed  Don’t decorate with stickers, gems, foam shapes or 3D eyes. Wildlife are eating these off the stones and causing lots of distress/ complications as a result️  Write ‘Crowborough’s Secret Stones Facebook’ on the back with a sharpie - for those who’ve not heard about the craze! How it works:  Hide them around the local area. E.g. next to a signpost, near a landmark or park, just as long as they can be found by someone walking by.  When you’ve found a stone, take a picture (you can be in it too!) and share it on the Facebook page.  Once you’ve enjoyed your secret stone, simply re-hide in a new location for someone else to enjoy (give a hint if you like).

How to get involved:

Special Stones: If you find a special stone that says Heatherview on it, then you can return to Heatherview (next to Morrison’s petrol station). The kids get a sweet and might get to meet the person who painted it. It’s a great idea from Artytime and is all about connecting the community.

Anyone can take part, you just need to paint a stone and hide it in and around Crowborough.

Use #crowboroughssecretstones if you post on Instagram or Twitter.

How to decorate your stone:

he e Community Young At Heart “I would like to tell you about our latest project YOUNG AT HEART where we bring families with under 5s and the elderly together to mix and mingle and have fun with stories, art and music and rhyme. The funder for this project is Connecting 4 You. Our pilot session was held at Heatherview Care Home and we are now in our second term. It is an invite only session due to venue size. Where as our Family Fun sessions are a drop in. The hope is through our activities we can build better communities in a fun and engaging way. So far the sessions have been well received. The residents have even painted stones to be part of the Crowborough Secret Stones.” - Beverley, Artytime For more information call Bev on 07730 400 646 or email bev@artytime.co.uk.

Crowborough Lions Summer Update Monies raised from such events helped “Summer weather is here at last and as we get out and about we are often asked ‘who are we and what do we do?’ As part of Lions Clubs International, the world’s largest voluntary service organisation, we work with likeminded individuals who wish to help their local community.

In order to fund that support, we fundraise through various events and now it’s our fairs and fêtes programme which takes centre stage. This year’s programme started at Groombridge on the May bank holiday with our ever-popular children’s crossbow challenge and then in June we attend the Crowborough Summer Fun Day with our bookstall followed by St John’s School Fair and Wadhurst Country Fair. You will also see us at Crowborough Town Fair, the Crowborough Hospital Fête and finally Hartfield Village Fair, with our popcorn, candyfloss and crossbows.

towards our recent Diabetic Screening event where 60 attendees were tested. The money raised also funded equipment for a child with cerebral palsy, assistance in updating the Jarvis Brook Girl Guide hall and provision of support to local students visiting Kenya and Gambia in order that they may in turn assist schools and improve the living conditions in the area. If you would like to help Crowborough Lions why not become a Lion or a Friends of Lions? We meet at Crowborough Social Club, Croft Road every second Tuesday of each month where members can catch up with what’s going on and enjoy each other’s company in a convivial atmosphere - why not pay us a visit? Contact David Martin on email: loxfield@ gmail.com and check out Facebook to see some of the other things we get up to. - David Martin, Crowborough Lions

Business Page Summer Fun Day 2018 REVIEW Crowborough Town Centre

Once again the sun shone on Crowborough Chamber’s annual Fun Day and it was wonderful to see so many people in the town centre. We welcomed over 40 local businesses and organisations who had stalls lining the roads, some were returning for their twelfth year but there were also some new faces, which is always good to see and the French Market added a certain “je ne sais quoi”! Free Face Painting, Punch and Judy, Magician, Bouncy Castle and Inflatable Fun were laid on to keep families entertained. Crowds at the bandstand were treated to music with Chase 29 kicking things off, followed by Rebecca Jabbar, the return of both In Choir and Milly McCarron and finishing off with sets from El Banda Burros and Nate Austin. Collection buckets were placed around the area and later in the year The Chamber will be presenting Crowborough Citizen’s Advice with the donations. The day could not happen without the support of our Main Sponsors: Freedom Leisure, Lawson Commercial, Millbrook Garden Company, Millennia Garden Machinery, Prosperity IFA and Tester and Jones Funeral Care. Thanks also go to Parker Building Supplies for supplying their services free of charge to help the day go smoothly and Banfield Residential Sales & Lettings, Newman’s Business Solutions and Waitrose as well as the marshals who gave up many hours of their time for free. Thank you to the businesses that make the Fun Day possible by sponsoring the event:

Advertise in The Crowborough Magazine Why advertise your business in The Crowborough Magazine? Quite simply, it works for the majority of businesses you see featured each issue. If you want to build your local customer base, increase your profits and make sure the local community knows about your business, advertising in this magazine can really help. The Crowborough Magazine attracts both large and small businesses who want to promote their services locally, with costs kept low to offer excellent value advertising. Smaller businesses, especially those without a ‘shop front’, can promote their services in a quality publication to the people who want to use them.

There are some great reasons to give it a go! Targeted audience: The magazine is delivered to over 11,000 homes and businesses in the TN6 area by Royal Mail every other month. Great value: Prices are kept low so that small businesses can make the most of their advertising budget and appear over a number of issues. It’s a fact that a sustained campaign works better at increasing sales than a one-off advert. All advertisers featured in each issue are listed on the magazine’s website - www.crowborough-magazine.co.uk - giving your business even more exposure. Good Service: From your initial enquiry, we will help you choose the best advertising package for your business according to your budget. We will make sure you have an eye-catching advert with a clear message about your business. Results: We want your advertising to work for you and we will do our best to make sure you get the most out of your campaign. About 80% of the businesses in this magazine are repeat advertisers! A good read: The magazine contains interesting local articles, useful information and listings of local events alongside the business advertising. Residents hold onto the magazines until the next issue arrives so that your advert is seen again and again.
