The Crowborough Magazine • January/February 2018

Note from the Editor... Dear Readers, Happy New Year! I hope you’ve managed to enjoy the festive season as much as possible and are now looking forward to what 2018 has in store. I’m always planning my year ahead over the Christmas period and setting myself goals. I also enjoy looking back at the highlights from the previous year and the most memorable one for me was when I was nominated as the media spokesperson for the Edenbridge Bonfire Society. It was certainly a new experience to be speaking in front of the TV cameras (I’m used to radio as I have my own weekly show) and it did take some getting used to but by the end I really was enjoying myself. I certainly hope I get the opportunity again this year. Well done to everyone involved in the 2017 Bonfire event - the fireworks were impressive and the parade a joy to watch. Of course the team at Crowborough Cabs had their annual float in the parade - I enjoy the close relationship between the two towns where I run my magazines. One of the advantages of being the editor of this magazine is I often get to hear from new businesses in the area. I was fascinated to hear about the new furniture shop that opened in July 2017 in Walshes Road, TransFunk Furniture. I met up with owners Rich and Alexa to see for myself what they were doing and ended up purchasing a magnificent hat/coat stand which is now my pride and joy. You can read more about them on page 28 and they are also giving readers a fantastic 15% off you make a purchase before the end of February 2018. It’s well worth a visit as there is so much packed into the shop. Don’t forget to keep your submissions coming in for features for 2018. If you would like a feature about your group or organisation, it’s easy to do. You can either submit your own text and photos or I can put something together for you. All the features that appear in this magazine also have their own dedicated page on the website. It’s a great way to let the local community know about your group and of course to build your membership. 10 | www.crowborough-magazine.co.uk • info@crowborough-magazine.co.uk • 01732 864 878

News from the Community Crowborough and District Lions Club four new members and we would love to emulate that achievement this year, and if you UPDATE “Now is the time to plan for the year ahead. First of all a Happy New Year and we hope that 2018 will bring health and happiness to you all. After the hectic Christmas period, which is so important for our fundraising activities, it is time for the members to take a breather. However, these cold and dark, short winter days will be brightened in January by our social Quiz’n’Chips event which, as a forerunner to the main fundraiser ‘The Big Quiz’ on 10 March, is always eagerly anticipated by the members. It is not known whether last year’s winners will be defending their title but the competition is sure to be fierce. Now is the time to plan for the year ahead and we have already drawn up the rotas for our weekly bookstall attendance and for the table duties at the Age Concern and Darby & Joan luncheon clubs. Do come and visit our bookstall outside the Post Office in Croft Road, we receive new books every week and our latest news is always available from the members. In the coming weeks we will be planning our fairs and fêtes attendance and if you would like us to support your event please contact us. During the past year we successfully recruited

Gardening has been shown to improve both physical and mental-well-being. It brings us closer to nature and has obvious social benefits. Gardening sessions restart for 2018 on Monday 5th March. If you know of someone who would like to join one of the happy groups, call Jean Burgess on 01892 740 305 or visit the website www.stonenesswalledgarden.org for further information.

FunkiFied Furniture at TransFunk At the back of the premises is a shared workshop where the amazing transformations take place. Rich enjoys spray painting furniture as it creates a very even finish. Acrylic varnish is then used to protect the items so their vibrancy will shine on for years.

If you’ve been down Walshes Road recently, you might have noticed the new furniture shop, TransFunk Furniture, easily identifiable by the brightly coloured items on display outside the premises - with even more inside! Opened in July 2017, local residents Rich and Alexa decided the time was right to turn their hobby into a business. Their backgrounds are not what you’d expect for such a creative duo - Rich has a past life working in IT and Alexa as a Dental Nurse. Giving a new lease of life to furniture is something they have been doing together for a while and decided to make the bold move to open a shop. They have been delighted with the feedback received from everyone so far. You’ll not only find an amazing selection of ‘FunkiFied’ furniture inside but a large choice of antique and vintage items as well - there really is something for everyone if your preference is a little less vibrant. It’s not just bright coloured paint that can transform an otherwise dull piece of furniture but pretty much anything (and almost everything) can be used. Alexa is the soft furnishings and upholstery whiz and together they can match furniture to your choice of fabrics!

When it comes to colour you get an unlimited choice as they like to work with the Dulux range which means any colour you want can be individually mixed so you can match new items to anything you already have in your home. They can even add photographs, magazine/comic/book pages or stamps to make items truly unique and personal.

Dotted throughout the shop you’ll find art and sculptures made by local artists who Rich and Alexa are keen to support. Since opening they often have people stop outside with a car full of items which could have ended up at the local dump but instead have been selected for FunkiFication. They are also interested in furniture from house clearances so do get in touch if you require this service and give some of your old bits the opportunity for a new lease of life. Rich and Alexa look forward to seeing you soon and always love taking on a challenge. If you’re looking for something fresh and exciting for your home they will be delighted to help. 1 Beechview Parade, Walshes Road, TN6 3RA Call 07760 286 866
