Note from the Editor... Dear Readers, Gosh, we are half way through the year already and summer is still deciding on whether it’s going to stay for a while. I do hope I’m going to find it when I go on holiday next week. I’ve decided to do something a bit different to my usual holiday and head off on a sailing holiday to Croatia with Nautilus Yachting (page 31). Do I get sea sick? I hope not but I have stocked up on sea sickness pills to take just in case! It was fabulous to see the sun shining at the annual Summer Fun Day in the town centre at the beginning of June. As usual the town was packed with people enjoying the fine weather, entertainment and the huge variety of stalls. Thanks again to the volunteers and organisers for making this event another success for Crowborough. I made myself available for lunch cover on the Chamber stall by the main stage - it’s always good fun meeting so many of you and Claire and Jeremy Woolger, Secretary and President of the local chamber, are always a pleasure to work with.

I want to congratulate Denis Hart and the committee for a fabulous Crowborough Community Festival in May. From starting off as an idea to becoming a reality in a relatively short space of time is a huge achievement. I didn’t manage to get to quite as many of the events as I had hoped but the ones I did attend were thoroughly enjoyable. 10 | www.crowborough-magazine.co.uk • info@crowborough-magazine.co.uk • 01732 864 878

The Crowborough Magazine • July/August 2017 One of the memorable events was the play ‘Murder by Proxy’ written by local resident Ian Pinkerton and performed by Gareth Owen-Williams and Kevin Cherry. It was simple yet entertaining, with laughter, mystery, and of course murder. Well done to all the cast and crew for a thoroughly entertaining evening. Pictured below L-R: Ian Pinkerton, Gareth Owen-Williams (Holmes), me, Kevin Cherry (Watson).

Crowborough gets ‘Arty’ Artytime is a community group run by volunteers whose mission is to bring arts and crafts to all ages and abilities. This is done by setting up creative workshops and sessions as well as training people to deliver them. The world needs creative thinkers and Artytime believe that by developing people’s creativity, whatever their age, is the key to future wellbeing. Best of all, the sessions are great fun.

Artytime After School Artytime is ideal for running after school sessions and this not only helps working parents by extending the school day, it also enables children to be involved in an activity that really interests them. Artytime sessions have been well received by parents and children as they develop their creativity and imagination as well as learning new art techniques. Children who take part in these sessions enjoy the fact that they can make what they like, something of their own choosing. Artytime is definitely more Jackson Pollock than Leonardo Da Vinci!

The current focus at the moment is on children and families via after school, Saturday clubs and family fun sessions for adults and their under 5s.

They are also great opportunities to get to know other parents with younger siblings. The sessions are a learning experience for both adult and child as ideas are shared. Topics covered in the past have included: healthy eating, sun safety, oral hygiene and citizenship - all achieved in learning through play.

Join the Artytime team People volunteer for many different reasons. You may wish to help children or have a keen interest in arts and crafts and you want to share your enthusiasm with others. You may have been out of work and be looking for something to help build your confidence and get you back in the workplace. News from the Community Update from Crowborough Lions “Summer has arrived and Crowborough Lions have swung into action at this year’s local fairs and fêtes. First up was the Crowborough Fun Day featuring an Italian Market and we successfully extended our bookstall hours to fully cover the day. We were also at St. John’s School Fair and enjoyed our first ever outing to Wadhurst Fair. Both events featured our famous Sussex popcorn and candy floss. Come and see us at Crowborough Town Fair on 8th July and finally on August Bank Holiday Monday at the Hospital Fête. We will have our popular cut-the-cards tins stall and tombola with all proceeds going to Friends of Crowborough Hospital - last year we exceeded £800! The first of our two annual signature events took place in mid-June, namely our Summer

Tea Party and musical entertainment for the town’s senior citizens at The United Church in Croft Road. Eighty invited members of the community are hosted by the Lions. This year’s Lions Darts Marathon sees sponsored teams across the district compete against each other is now underway. A team is comprised of six players, each of whom has fifty throws of three darts to see which team can achieve the highest aggregate score. All players are sponsored and half their total sponsorship may be nominated by the team to a charity of their choice with the remaining half being donated to the Lions in support of local good causes. Above all it’s about having a fun event from which many charities will benefit.” Hugh McKelvie - Treasurer – Crowborough & District Lions Club

The new running track will feature three lanes and will be surfaced with Polytan WS. This specially formulated surface is spike-resistant and approved by the IAAF (International Association of Athletic Federations). Example of a Spadeoak installation. Crowborough track to be three lanes

Following the decision by the committee, and after a tender process, Spadeoak has been appointed as contractor for this project. The company has managed a number of significant installations including The Paula Radcliffe track at Loughborough University, the athletics track at The Duke of York Military School (Kent), two multi-use games areas at Harrow School and, closer to home, the athletics track at Paddock Wood Leisure Centre. Work on the new track commenced at the end of May 2017, and it is expected the project will take between eight and twelve weeks to complete. In addition to the new running track the committee has also decided to resurface the netball and basketball courts at the ground. The basketball court will also receive new multi-sports markings, making it more usable for other sports. Committee Chairman, Cllr Kay Moss, said “We are really pleased this project is finally happening – with work hopefully starting as soon as the end of May. We look forward to the residents of Crowborough enjoying this new facility.”

The new outdoor fitness equipment at Jarvis Brook Recreation Ground was recently officially opened by the former Mayor, Cllr Ron Reed and Mr David Coppard. The equipment was kindly donated to the Jarvis Brook Community Association by local business Coppards, and then in turn gifted to the Town Council by the Association. Comprising of equipment such as a ‘Chin-Up’, ‘Chest Press’, ‘Cross-Rider’ and much more, the green gym is suitable for use by most people, however, there are height restrictions in place for your safety. Please refer to the notice attached to each individual piece for further information. Chairman of the Jarvis Brook Community Association, Carolyn Wickens, said “The grand opening of the Green Gym Equipment went extremely well and there were over one hundred people there; ninety Mayor, Cllr Ron Reed, and Mr David Coppard eight free hot dogs were consumed, along with plenty of tea, coffee and squash. The weather could not have been kinder to us. It must have been one of the warmest days the year so far. The JBCA is very grateful to the Crowborough Town Mayor for giving up his time to come along to open the event along with Mr David Coppard. The community, and the JBCA, would also like to thank Mr Coppard for supplying the equipment which is already being used by many people and is a wonderful addition to the Jarvis Brook Recreation Ground.”

Crowborough enters South East in Bloom This year the Environment Committee has decided to enter our town in two categories for the annual South East in Bloom competition. Judges will be visiting Crowborough in late July to view the Country Park and the Town Centre areas. They will be taking the opportunity to walk through the Town Centre, not only viewing the floral displays, but also looking at the general green spaces within the town and how we manage and look after them. They will then take the opportunity to visit our wonderful Country Park to look at the work our Ranger has been doing there and to view the many natural habitats that exist for wildlife in this special nature reserve.

East Sussex Fire & Rescue Service

Free Fire Safety Advice East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service is committed to helping people stay safe in their homes.

Recent years have seen wonderful floral displays across the town and the committee believes this year will exceed all expectations with colourful hanging baskets and planters throughout the town centre during the summer months.

One of the ways we do this is by carrying out our free Home Safety Visits by our specially trained advisors. We can offer a wide range of advice around home safety, check smoke alarms, and discuss specialist equipment as appropriate. Our home safety visits enable us to identify any existing risks and what can be done to reduce them. We will check if there are working smoke alarms in the home to provide the earliest possible warning of fire. For aa free visit, contact us the at: form on the For freehome homesafety safety visit fill out homefire.safetyvisits@esfrs.org reverse and return it to us.

Business Page Summer Fun Day Report The Chamber was delighted that the sun shone on another successful Fun Day and it was wonderful to see so many people in Crowborough Town centre. We welcomed over 40 local businesses who took stalls and everyone reported having a great day, so much so they already want to book for next year! The Italian market brought some wonderful food with them which was very popular with the public. Free Face Painting, Punch and Judy , Magician, Bouncy Castle and Penalty Shoot Out were laid on to keep the young, and young at heart, entertained. Collection buckets were placed around the area and later in the year The Chamber will be presenting Brighter Crowborough with the donations. This group of volunteers are dedicated to keeping our streets clean, green and litter free and do a wonderful job litter picking and tidying the Crowborough area. The Chamber was delighted to welcome back to the bandstand Milly McCarron, Paige Hackworth, In Choir and Any Other Business as well as Sweetheart Swing. The day could not happen without the support of our Main Sponsors: Freedom Leisure, Lawson Commercial, Millbrook Garden Company, Millennia Garden Machinery, Prosperity IFA and Tester and Jones Funeral Care. Thanks also go to Banfield Residential Sales & Lettings, Focus All Media and Parker Building Supplies for supplying their services free of charge to help the day go smoothly as well as the marshals who gave up many hours of their time for free. To see photographs from the day, visit the Chamber website: www.crowboroughchamber.co.uk

Appearances Aesthetics have been at Gillian's studio in Chiselhurst so I thought it was about time I had a treatment in her local Edenbridge venue, Options Beauty Salon in Edenbridge High Street. This is in fact where she sees many of her local clients. She conducts initial consultations as well as patch testing on new clients from here and her specialist equipment is fully portable.

Gillian Huntley, 2015 Kent Aesthetic Practitioner of the Year, of award winning appearances aesthetics is celebrating 30 years in the industry this year. Her treatments have really helped transform the lives of her clients by boosting their confidence through the nonsurgical procedures she delivers. As well as specialist treatments such as mole removal, mesotherapy, thread vein/ pigmentation removal, skin peels using the Image Skincare range, skin tag removal, Gillian also provides semi-permanent cosmetic treatments such as eyebrow (WoW Brows) and eyeliner tattooing, areola reconstruction, receding hairlines and medical tattooing. Gillian is fully certified so you can be assured you're in safe hands. So far, all the treatments I have received

In the last issue you may recall Gillian tattooed a 'beauty spot' just below my eye. She was very conservative with the size initially as she would rather a client return to make something more prominent than go large in the first place! I've now become so fond of my beauty spot that I wanted it slightly larger so I met with Gillian at Options Beauty in Edenbridge for her to carry out this semi-perment make-up procedure.

Transforming the way we look Part 7 Some of the treatments I’ve had over the last several months in pictures as a reminder. All features are available to read on the website www.crowborough-magazine.co.uk and navigate to the Business Features section. Semi-permanent eyeliner

Clear mole removal

Red vein removal

Scar & wrinkle reduction

If you would like to arrange a consultation with Gillian or book an appointment for WoW Brows, beauty spots or any other treatments she offers, call her on 07711 067 789 or email her at gillian@ appearancesaesthetics.co.uk.
