During a year in which it felt like every door was closed, the Lake County Forest Preserves were one of the few public spaces to remain open. Every day, our trails and preserves provided refuge, peace, and solace, and the public responded in overwhelming numbers.

Our parking lots and trails were full of walkers, runners, cyclists, and birders. Our lakes and streams attracted paddlers and anglers. Even our golf courses saw a resurgence to counter years of decline in the sport.

Nature offered solace and escape to birdwatchers and photographers and a chance to recreate responsibly outdoors.

You’re never more than a 10-minute drive to a Lake County Forest Preserve. Visitors who found one preserve full navigated to another just minutes away.

FINDING REFUGE

8

The Forest Preserves maintains 208 miles of trail across our 64 different preserves. Our most wellknown and arguably most loved trail, the Des Plaines River Trail and Greenway, was designated a National Recreation Trail in 2020 by the National Park Service and US Forest Service. This distinction is reserved for exemplary trails that connect people to natural resources and improve their quality of life.

The Des Plaines River Trail and my recumbent bike have helped me through major health problems and the pandemic. The trail is so peaceful and relaxing; great for clearing your head. Cycling has helped me heal and helped me adapt to a seemingly ever-changing normal. -- David Goldman, Buffalo Grove

The forest preserves provided a safe social gathering place— even deep in winter.

After decades of decline, golf was resurgent in 2020. At the Forest Preserves three courses across Lake County, rounds increased 18% over the previous year.

Clicks on our Interactive Trail Map increased 143% in 2020.

Nation-wide, 3.1 million people fished for the first time in 2020. Here in Lake County, fishing is allowed at 16 preserves in rivers and lakes.

FINDING SOLUTIONS

12

The pandemic upended our experiential education and outreach, and we had to u q ickly shift gears to serve the public in a dierent way. By midsummer, our professional educators had transitioned many programs to a virtual environment.

Grants and donations through the Preservation Foundation made many of these innovations possible, filling budget gaps at a time when revenues took a direct hit. For example: Dunn TV, a new YouTube channel.

While some planned Dunn Museum exhibitions were cancelled, we developed our first virtual exhibition, Our Voice is Black History, in partnership with College of Lake County.

With the Dunn Museum closed for most of the year, our Free Thursday programming, sponsored by USG, shifted online and drew greater attendance than ever. A new Ask An Educator LIVE series continues to grow and has attracted more than 17,000 followers to date.

There was so much fear and loneliness when COVID-19 hit. When I run on the trails with the American Flag, it brings massive positive emotions from people I encounter. It’s generally viewed as a beacon of hope. — Mark Palmieri

FINDING FRIENDS

Despite the conditions, we initiated major trail projects and completed several large-scale preserve improvement projects in 0 2 0 2 . Bualo Creek reopened, and we broke ground on new a f cilities at Lakewood. The timing o f r these initiatives could not have been better o f r local residents anxious to get outside.

17

The area surrounding Buffalo Creek is more densely populated than anywhere else in the Forest Preserve system. New boardwalks and overlooks along 1.7 miles of new trail and 30 additional parking spaces were welcome additions. 18

A 0.4-mile gravel path opened across Route 45 at Dada Drive. The short trail has a big impact, connecting tens of thousands of residents to the east with 8 miles of trail at Rollins Savanna.

Major changes are coming to Lakewood. Preserving the iconic barn and silos, we broke ground on new trails and shelters, including a threeseason shelter.

A tunnel under Route 45 in Antioch is a critical component in the 41-mile Millennium Trail and connects Raven Glen and Ethel’s Woods Forest Preserves.

FINDING HOPE

Dear Friends, The forest preserves were there for us in so many ways throughout 2020. As the world seemed to close in around us, our trails and preserves remained open—every day— 6:30 am to sunset—for everyone.

20

We relied on our forest preserves for our physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual well-being. We relied on them for a safe gathering space with friends. And after a year like no other, we learned not to take this incredible resource for granted. This was evident in the flood of positive messages from the public. Through emails, social media posts, and handwritten letters, hundreds of people stepped forward, expressing their gratitude to the Forest Preserves for being there when they needed us most. As a donor to the Preservation Foundation, thank YOU for being there for the Lake County Forest Preserves in 2020. You stepped forward to help our organization do more in every aspect of its mission, and we are deeply grateful. Sincerely,

Nels Leutwiler President

Rebekah Snyder Executive Director

There is an emotional attachment to forest preserve land. That has been more apparent than ever while living through a global pandemic. I urge people to experience these pockets of nature throughout the county. — Nels Leutwiler, president of the Preservation Foundation
