Why Recycle? Commercial, institutional and municipal establishments located in Pennsylvania’s mandated municipalities are required to recycle highgrade office paper, corrugated cardboard, aluminum, and leaf waste. In addition, establishments must recycle any other materials included in the municipality’s recycling ordinance or regulations. The average American will throw away

600 times

their weight in garbage during their lifetime.

Paper

The average person generates about 1.5 tons of solid waste per year. Only about 30 percent of recyclable solid waste is actually recycled.

Each ton of recycled paper saves 3.5 cubic yards of landfill, 17 thirty foot trees, 7,000 gallons of water, and 380 gallons of oil.

Aluminum Cans

Due to recycling, aluminum cans account for less than 1% of the total U.S. waste stream. Recycling aluminum cans saves 95% of the energy used to make the cans from new material.

Cardboard

29.5 million tons of corrugated cardboard are generated each year. Recycling one ton of cardboard saves over 9 cubic yards of landfill space and 46 gallons of oil.

Newspaper

If every American recycled just one-tenth of their newspapers, we could save about 25 million trees each year.
