Het idee ontstond in maart 2016, per ongeluk, toen designer Tein Traniello een portret maakte van zijn eigen labradoodle Ventje. Het was meteen een groot succes en er kwamen er ook verzoeken om andere huisdieren te portretteren. Al snel werd het project door internationale designblogs opgepikt. Inmiddels worden er in het atelier in Amsterdam elke dag dieren van over de hele wereld ge-l’Animorphed.

The idea for l’Animorphe first came about in March 2016 as a fun and creative outlet for dutch designer Tein Traniello, using the Facebook page of his best buddy labradoodle Ventje as its platform. It wasn’t long before friends were asking for their cats and dogs to be l’Animorphed.

In een spierwit kantoor vol met eigen l’Animorphe creaties krijgt Tein dagelijks aanvragen voor nieuwe werken binnen. Laatst beeldde hij nog twee stokoude cavia’s af, omdat een 20-jarig meisje haar overleden huisdieren van vroeger zo miste. Haar vader vond het een mooi cadeau voor haar studentenkamer in Leiden. Dergelijke verzoeken ontvangt hij aan de lopende band – van hond tot papegaai. Het is belangrijk dat de eigenschappen van het dier vermeld worden bij de aanvraag. “Je hebt bijvoorbeeld hele dominante katten en teckels, die krijgen een uniformpje aan. Maar je hebt natuurlijk ook veel ‘bravere’ dieren. Laatst ontving ik een ontzettend lieve beschrijving over een vrouwelijke chihuahua. Als je alleen het hoofdje van die hond neemt, ziet het er meteen vrij mannelijk uit. In zo’n geval maak ik er bijvoorbeeld wat vlindertjes omheen. Ik zie mijn eigen hond vooral als wijs, slim, ook wel een beetje zakelijk. Ventje kan als geen ander onderhandelen over koekjes.”
In a snow white studio filled with l’Animorphe creations Tein daily receives requests for new work. Lately he l’Animorphed two very old guinea pigs because a twenty year old girl still terribly missed her pets who died a long time ago. Her father thought it would be a wonderful present for her student room in Leiden. These type of requests – from to dog to parrot he receives constantly. It is important that the characteristics of the animal are mentioned in the request. “For instance there are very dominant cats and dachshunds, they will wear a uniform. But there are of course many ‘sweeter’ animals. Recently I received such a sweet description of a female Chihuahua. If you only portrait the head of that dog, it will actually straight away look too masculine. In such a case I for example will surround the pet with some butterflies. I see my dog as wise, bright, also somewhat business like. Ventje, like no one else, can negotiate with me about getting cookies”.
Tein werkte eerder vooral in de tijdschriftenbranche, hij zat vaak buitenshuis op redacties. Op een bepaald moment is hij vanuit huis gaan werken. Creatief zijn zat er bij de ontwerper al vroeg in: voor tekenen had-ie een 9 op zijn eindlijst. Tein vertelt: “Eerlijk gezegd is dit ook het enige wat ik écht kan, in de rest blink ik niet zo uit. Ik haalde de middelbare school met de hakken over de sloot. Later kwam naarboven dat ik ADHD had, concentreren was altijd al een flinke klus. Wanneer ik echter iets doe wat ik écht leuk vind, gaat mijn Superpower (de hyperfocus) aan en is dat geen probleem meer.”
Tein mainly used to work a lot for editorial departments in the magazine branch. At a certain moment he started working from home for himself because editorial work wasn’t easy to combine with his own assignments. Being creative started already at a young age: for drawing he got a nine on his final school rapport. Tein tells: “Honestly it’s the only thing that I can do, for the rest I don’t really excel very much. I only just passed my high school. Later on I found out that I have ADHD, that’s why being concentrated was a tough job for me. But when I do something that I really like, my Superpower (hyperfocus) takes over and focussing is not a problem anymore”.
Op de bank ligt eigen hond Ventje, pal onder een creatie van Tein. Een muur verderop hangt Ventje zelf als muze aan de muur: hij was het eerste dier dat de ontwerper op papier zette. De labradoodle was al zijn alles, maar is nu dus ook een aanleiding. Tein kocht de hond toen hij eenmaal voor zichzelf begonnen was, puur als gezelschap tijdens een werkdag. Ventje is dan ook ‘geweldig’, en leent

Omdat hij zijn vrienden op social media niet meer lastig wilde vallen met wéér een foto van zijn hond, maakte hij een Facebook pagina van VentjeMcDoodle. “Het begon als een creatieve uitlaatklep, van filmpjes tot foto’s. Op een bepaald moment kwam Ventje zelfs bij me zitten, en in mijn beleving keekie me bijna zo aan van: wanneer gaan we weer foto’s maken? Na een tijdje volgde de eerste grafische creatie. Het Rijksmuseum heeft hun hele archief aan oude meesters vrijgegeven, dus daar kan je mee doen wat je wil. Toen besloot ik Ventje in de jas van een oude schilder te steken.”

Just because he didn’t want to bother his friends on social media with another photo of his dog, he decided to create a Facebook page about VentjeMcDoodle. “It all started as a creative outlet: from films to photos. At a certain moment Ventje even came and sat next to me, and in my perception sort of looked at me like: when are we going to make photos again? After a while the first graphic creation followed. The Rijksmuseum had released their complete archive of old masters. So you can do with it as you like. I then decided to portrait Ventje in a jacket of an old master”.
Vanaf dat moment begon het balletje te rollen – internationale designblogs zoals Fubiz en DesignYouTrust pikten Tein zijn werk op. “Op een bepaald ogenblik gingen mensen aan me vragen of ik niet óók zo’n portret van hun huisdier kon maken. Ik vind het fantastisch om het karakter van dieren af te beelden. Ik had eerst niet zoveel met katten. Nu zie ik dat de eigenzinnigheid van een kat geweldige inspiratie kan zijn voor een indrukwekkend portret”.
From that moment on the ball started rolling – international design blogs such as Fubiz and DesignYouTrust mentioned his work. “At a certain moment people started asking me if I would also make a portrat of their pet. I think it’s fantastic to portrait the characters of animals. For example I didnt understand cats very much, Now have I discovered their edgy personality is a great inspiration for an impressive portrait”.
Inmiddels heeft Tein altijd zo’n 20 dieren in de ‘to do box’ zitten. Zijn ansichtkaarten liggen in verschillende winkels in Amsterdam. Zijn ster was al rijzend, maar wordt nu creatiever dan ooit. En ja, wat voor dier hij zelf zou zijn? “Ik maakte ooit een zebra, die is autobiografisch. Het dier heeft geleerd dat hij niet over zich heen moet laten lopen, en daarnaast is er méér dan zwart en wit. Het grijze gebied is net zo interessant.” Later ontdekte hij ook het kleurpalet en l’Animorphe was geboren.
In the meanwhile Tein has about twenty pets lined up. His postcards can be found in various stores in Amsterdam. His star was already rising, but now is more creative than ever. And what type of animal would he himself liked to be portrait as? “I once made a Zebra which is autobiographical. That animal has learnt that he must not let others walk over him and besides that there is more than just only black and white. The grey area is just as interesting”. DUTCH DESIGNER CREATES VERY PERSONAL ANIMAL PORTRAITS
“This really makes me happy” Jouw Tommy of Minoes als oude meester aan je muur. Hoe stoer is dat? Ontwerper Tein Traniello uit Amsterdam vereeuwigt huisdieren op een wel heel bijzondere manier. Hij maakt digitale dierenportretten in de stijl van de oude meesters uit de zeventiende eeuw en Franse impressionisten. Inmiddels hebben vele tientallen baasjes een l’Animorphe aan de muur hangen. Designer Tein Traniello from Amsterdam eternalizes pets in a very special way. He makes digital animal portraits with the style of the Dutch master painters and French impresionists from the seventeenth century. We ontmoeten ontwerper Tein in zijn atelier op het Bickerseiland in Amsterdam. Blonde Labradoodle Ventje, die altijd met zijn baasje mee gaat naar het werk, ligt op zijn kleed bij te komen van een heerlijke hondenwandeling met de uitlaatservice. Pal boven Ventje hangt een prachtig portret van de hond met baret aan de wand. “Dit was mijn allereerste l’Animorphe”, vertelt Tein. “Hier is het allemaal mee begonnen. Ik heb een ontzettend goede band met mijn hond. Ik moet er echt niet aan denken dat hij er op een dag niet meer is, maar stel dat hij overlijdt, dan zou ik dit aan mijn muur willen hebben als herinnering.”
We meet up with designer Tein at his studio in the centre of Amsterdam. Blond labradoodle, called Ventje (means little guy in Dutch), who always accompanies his human to work, lies on his carpet relaxing af ter his great walk with the dog walker. Just above Ventje hangs a magnificent portrait of the dog with a beret on the wall. “This was my first l’Animorphe”, Tein says. “Here it all started. I have an extremely good bond with my dog. I really don’t want to think about it when he someday might not be here anymore. But should he die, I would like to have this portrait on my wall as a remembrance”.
Tein photoshopte het karakteristieke hoofd van Ventje in een oude meester en bewerkte het licht zodanig, dat het een echt olieverfschilderij lijkt. Hij plaatste de foto op de Facebookpagina van Ventje (Ventje McDoodle, red.). De reacties van zijn vrienden waren zó enthousiast en wilden er ook één van hun eigen hond of kat. De een na de andere opdracht volgde. Die zomer mocht hij zijn eerste werken in café Finch exposeren. Designblogs pikten zijn werk op en schreven erover. Hierdoor kreeg hij ook internationaal voet aan de grond. Inmiddels hangen ze zelfs in Amerika
Tein photo hopped the characteristic head of Ventje in a Dutch master painter and created the same light so it looks like an original oil painting. After that he placed the photo on a Facebook page of Ventje (Ventje McDoodle). The reactions from Tein’s friends were so enthusiastic, that he received requests to also portrait their dog or cat. One after another assignments came in. After that Tein was allowed to exhibit his first works in a café in Amsterdam. International designblogs discovered his work and this ended up to international fame. Even in America one can find l’Animorphes.
Hondenmens Tein heeft altijd een zwak gehad voor honden en het is niet gek dat hij qua werk deze richting is op gegaan. “Vorig jaar werd ik veertig. Een prima moment om de balans op te maken. Ik was eerlijk gezegd al een hele tijd niet meer écht blij met mijn werk. Ik ging maar door met opdrachten waar ik geen energie meer van kreeg. Het was hoognodig tijd het roer om te gooien mijn hart te gaan volgen. Van l’Animorphe word ik écht heel blij. Ik ben bezig met de bijzondere band tussen mens en dier die je volgens mij alleen begrijpt als zelf en dier hebt. Al jaren sjanste ik stiekem met vreemde honden op straat Ik heb echt een klik met ze. De keuze om zelf een hond te nemen nu mijn dagelijks leven zo georganiseerd heb zodat dat kon, was geen moeilijke keuze.”

Tein always had a soft spot for dogs. That’s why it’s not surprising he started this project. “Last year I became 40, the moment you start thinking about “what do I want from life.” For a long time work didn’t satisfy me anymore, I kept on going on but didnt know why. It was time for a change and to follow my heart. L’Animorphe really makes me happy. My work has to do with the special connection between a pet and his human. I think only pet-owners understand what i mean. I have always had something with animals, already for a long time they form an inspirational source for me. Especially dogs I really like. For many years I secretly flirt with them on the street. I really have a click with them”.

Inmiddels hebben vele tientallen baasjes een uniek persoonlijk portret van hun huisdier aan de muur hangen. “Ik probeer het karakter van het dier vast te leggen in een portret. Zodat de baas nog heel lang deze intense vriendschap kan herinneren. Als het kan voeg ik wat humor toe in het portret. Ik wil mijn portretten geen kunst noemen. Ik vind sentimentele curiosa beter passen. Je moet ‘een beetje gekte’ in je hebben om zo een portret van je huisdier te laten maken. Aan mensen die de humor en emotionele lading niet begrijpen heb ik inmiddels weinig boodschap.” “Ik maak digitale bewerkingen die eruit zien als een olieverfschilderij, dierenhoofden op mensenlijven. De Egyptenaren deden het ook al. Het Rijksmuseum heeft het hele archief met oude meesters vrijgegeven, waar ik uit kan putten. Ik maak portretten van levende dieren, dieren die bijna aan hun einde zijn en van dieren die er al niet meer zijn. Dat doe ik aan de hand van foto’s.”

In the meanwhile already several owners have a unique personal portrait of their pet hanging on their wall. “I try to capture the special character of the pet. So the Human can remember this very special friendship for a very long time. When possible, I like to add humor and a wink in the work. I absolutely don’t call it art, I will do with sentimental curiosa. You have to be ‘a little nuts’ to have a petportrait made. I try to ignore people who can’t understand the humor and the emotional value in my portraits.” “I make digital adaptations that look like an oil painting, animal heads on human bodies. Even the old Egypts made portraits this way. The Dutch Rijksmuseum released the whole archives which I can use as a base. I make portraits of living animals, animals that are nearing their end and of animals that are not here anymore. I use photographs as a base”. S P E C I A L P O R T R A I T G A L L E RY
Bully Een bijzondere hond die Tein heeft geportretteerd is hond Bully. “Hij was ernstig ziek, net geopereerd en miste een oog. Heel zielig. Zijn baasje stuurde een foto met het verzoek een portret te maken. Bully, een senior die het grootste deel van zijn hondenleven achter de rug heeft, moest gel’Animorphed worden. Maar ja, Bully miste dus een oog. Ik zat te dubben wat ik moest doen. Er een ander oog in zetten, of Bully er uit laten zien als een zeerover? Toen kwam ik een schilderij met een soort Hazes-achtig hoedje tegen, de schaduw viel precies op het oog. Je ziet het wel als je goed kijkt maar trekt niet de aandacht. Die mevrouw moest huilen van blijdschap toen ze het portret zag.” Tein laat een schilderij zien van een kat in uniform. “Dit is Loki, “de terrorist”. Hij domineert het hele gezin. Het is een Noorse Boskat, vrij groot, met een heftige
A special dog that Tein has portrayed is that of Bully. “He was very ill, had surgery and missed one eye. Very sad. Bully is an old dog that has lived the major part of his life. His owner very much wanted for me to make a l’Animorphe for her. She sent me a photo of Bully, with one eye. I was hesitating about what to do: put another eye in the portrait? Or let Bully look like a pirate? Then I came across a fun type of hat, the shadow exactly fell over the missing eye. You can see it if you look closely, but it doesn’t attract attention. That lady had to cry for joy when she saw the portrait”. Tein shows a painting of a cat in uniform. “This is Loki, ‘the terrorist’. He dominates the whole family. It’s a Norwegian wildcat, fairly large, with an intense personality. I liked to portray him in a General’s attire, photographed slightly from under upwards, so that he looks down at everybody”. Another special animal portrait was of another bulldog that was very ill. “His owner has

persoonlijkheid. Ik vond het leuk om hem af te beelden in een generaalskostuum, iets van onder gefotografeerd, zodat hij neerkijkt op iedereen.” Een ander bijzonder dierenportret is dat van een andere bulldog die heel ziek was. “Zijn baasje zou hem de volgende dag laten inslapen. Ze stuurde me een foto waar ik eigenlijk niet zoveel mee kon. De hond lag op een kussen en zijn halve bekje was eraf. Maar ja, ik wil er ook niet zomaar een bekje van een andere hond op zetten, want wie zegt dat het er in het echt zo uitzag. Toen vond ik die kraag in mijn archief, die prachtig over het bekje viel. De vrouw vond het heel mooi hoe haar hond was vastgelegd. Ze was heel ontroerd. Haar reactie deed me veel. Daar doe je het voor.” Cavia De meeste dieren die hij vastlegt zijn honden en katten. “Ik heb ook wel konijnen gedaan en kreeg net een opdracht voor andere dieren binnen, 2 bejaarde caviazussen. Het “meisje” waar ze van waren (*wordt inmiddels 20 jaar) is net het huis uit en vader geeft het duo voor haar verjaardag. De cavia’s zijn inmiddels 2 jaar geleden overleden, maar ze heeft het nog steeds over ze vandaar dit cadeau” Mensen krijgen een hele lijst vol tips en trucs hoe zij de ideale foto voor Tein kunnen maken. Dieren die op rijafstand van Amsterdam wonen, nodigt hij uit in zijn atelier. Die fotografeert hij zelf. Vervolgens vertellen de baasjes wat meer over het karakter van hun dieren, kiezen ze een stijl en geven ze aan waar het schilderij in huis komt te hangen. Met al deze informatie gaat Tein digitaal aan de slag. Naast portretten op maat heeft de creatieve Amsterdammer ook een collectie ‘vrij werk’ een serie Exotische Dieren’ gemaakt, zoals de gans Mister Gray, eend Miss Peking en lama The Duke of Pjug. “Mijn favoriet is dit schilderij “The Sad Monkey”. Vooral kinderen reageren heel leuk op De racoon, Mr. Ra-Cloony”. Ik vind het leuk om verhaaltjes bij de dieren te verzinnen. Wie ze zijn, wat hun karakter is, hun achtergrond. De verhalen haal ik uit nieuwe inzichten in mezelf, maar ook uit mensen die ik uit het dagelijks leven ken, of een personage uit een serie of een film.

But, I didn’t want to put a mouth of another dog on the portrait, because who can say what it looked like in real life? Then I found a collar in my archive, which fell just beautifully over the mouth. The owner thought her dog was captured wonderfully. Her reaction meant a lot to me. This is why I do this. The most animals that Tein captures are dogs and cats. “I also have done rabbits, and have just received an assignment for two old age guinea pig sisters. They died two years ago, but the girl from which they were, meanwhile twenty years old, still talks about them. She has just left her parental home and her father is giving her this portrait as a present”. People receive a whole list full of tips and tricks how they can make the ideal photo for Tein. Animals living within driving distance from Amsterdam are invited to his studio. He then photographs them himself. Then the owners tell more about the character of their pet, they choose a style and tell where in their home the portrait is going to hang. With all this information Tein starts the digital process. l’Animorphe now exists now for more than a year and Tein hopes that he can make these animal portraits for a long time: L’Animorphe is my playground, it really makes me happy”. The racoon ‘Mr. Ra-Clooney’, I also think is a success. I like to invent little stories that belong with the animals. How they are, what their character is and their background. ‘Hoe was je relatie met je vader?’ klinkt de sonore stem van de psychiater: Hij laat zich door zijn cliënten bij zijn voornaam noemen: ‘Zeg maar gewoon Oskar, dat praat makkelijker.’
Marleen Brouwer zit tegenover hem op de comfortabele canapé waarop je ook languit zou kunnen liggen. Ze zit stijfjes rechtop, haar knieën tegen elkaar geklemd. Ze kampt met huwelijksproblemen en depressies, staat op de doorverwijsbrief van de huisarts, en het is niet duidelijk of het ene probleem uit het andere is voortgekomen, of het andere uit het ene. Oskar is overtuigd Neo-Freudiaan. Hij is er zeker van dat de verschillende persoonlijkheidsstoornissen die de moderne psychiatrie onderscheidt gewoon onder één noemer gebracht kunnen worden: hysterie. Dit wist Hypocrates al en Oscar ziet geen reden om de diagnostiek nodeloos ingewikkeld te maken. Dus weg met de paranoïde, schizoïde, dwangmatige, manischdepressieve, narcistische aandoeningen, deze twintigste-eeuwse wildgroei, die de boel nodeloos ingewikkeld gemaakt heeft en de ziekteverzekeringen financieel uitput. Hysterie is te herleiden tot onderdrukte seksuele verlangens: hoe simpel kan het zijn! Marleen gaat verzitten. Ze zucht. ‘Ik kon nooit iets goed doen in zijn ogen. Hij had eigenlijk een zoon gewild, maar hij kreeg een meisje en daar bleef het bij, want mijn moeder kon geen kinderen meer krijgen.’ Benen goedgevormd, ziet Oscar, maar de heupen iets te smal. Gezicht rond en kinderlijk, omgeven door halflang roodblond haar. Trieste blauwe ogen, maar volle, waanzinnig sensuele lippen. Er gaat een lichte rilling door zijn lichaam terwijl zijn blik bij haar mond blijft hangen.
‘Maar wat kon ik doen?’ zegt ze schor, ‘Ik wilde best met hem gaan vissen of naar het voetbalveld, maar hij voelde er niets voor. Ga jij maar met je poppen spelen, zei hij vol verachting.’ En Jezus wat een borsten, in dat net iets te strakke shirtje. Hoe is het mogelijk dat een vader niet geniet van zo’n prachtige dochter. En hoe kan zo’n vrouw een slecht huwelijk hebben? Ze is gewoon gemaakt voor de liefde. Eerst maar eens wat hypnose op haar loslaten, besluit Oskar, ze moet terug naar de vaderfiguur op wiens schoot ze zo graag had willen zitten. Dan door naar de echtgenoot, die voor zijn werk schijnt te leven en als hij thuiskomt tot niets meer in staat is. Oscar kijkt haar met zijn zwartglanzende ogen strak aan en begint met een diepe, zachte stem enkele woorden te prevelen: ‘…Hier ben je veilig, adem diep in en uit, eindelijk kun je jezelf zijn en je remmingen loslaten…’ Ze zucht vol overgave en alle rondingen van haar lichaam deinen verleidelijk mee. Oskar zou ook wel willen zuchten, maar hij houdt zich in. Eerst moet ze in de stemming gebracht worden. ‘Wat verlang je van een man, diep in je hart,’ vraagt hij met een suikerzoete stem. ‘Lieve woorden? Strelingen? Of juist brute kracht? Genomen worden, vol vuur, door een man die half gek is van begeerte? Vertel me waar je heimelijk naar verlangt, want al je wensen kunnen hier in vervulling gaan.’ Marleen kreunt. Nog even, denkt Oskar, dan is ze er klaar voor. Na afloop zal ze niet weten of het echt gebeurd is, of dat het een droom was. Maar dan klinkt er een muziekje, een of andere onnozele ringtone. Marleen schrikt wakker en trekt haar Smartphone tevoorschijn. Verdorie, denkt Oskar, moet ik volgende keer weer helemaal opnieuw beginnen.

column Soms zie je iets voorbij komen waarvan je je afvraagt: “Wie bedenkt zoiets?” Zo’n idee waarbij je denkt: “Waarom heb ik dit niet zelf bedacht?” En “Hoe is het mogelijk?” Nou dat. Maar dan fraaier, hilarischer en bijzonderder. Een uniek portret van mijn nu voor altijd vereeuwigde lieveling. Mooi man. Ik zou er bijna puur voor de lol gewoon nog een kat bijnemen! Toen ik een portret van mijn Prince bestelde beloofde Tein me 3 schetsen te sturen. Het werden er 18 (!). In een reis langs de kunstgeschiedenis kwamen de negen levens van mijn Abessijn voorbij in allerlei situaties en kostuums. Waanzinnig! Ik wil ze allemaal! Ok. Het is natuurlijk best wel gestoord om een portret van je kat te laten maken. Maar als je vervolgens iedere dag weer met grote blijdschap naar je aankoop kijkt en weet dat je dat nog hebt als zijn negen levens voorbij zijn is het misschien toch niet eens zo’n gek idee.

But then more beautiful, hilarious and more special. An unique portrait of my now forever immortalized darling. Super! I would actually for the sheer fun of it take another cat! When I ordered a portrait of my Prince, Tein promised to send me 3 sketches. It turned into 18(!). A journey through art history the nine lives of my Abyssinian passed the revue in all types of situations and costumes. Amazing! I want them all!! OK. It really is quite crazy to have a portrait made of your cat. But when you after that every day can look with great joy at your purchase and you know that you will still have it after his nine lives have passed, it might not be such a bad idea.
