“All our student’s took a special interest in this project that connected them to literary writing they will be experiencing in their upcoming High School years. The decision they made to include student’s from all grade levels and collaborate with the Art Department was a perfect example of how these student’s are not only mature, but humble in their pursuit of knowledge and skills that will prepare them for a successful college career as is the mission of La Joya ISD,” Esmeralda Noyola, Teacher.

Through the Woods and into

the Castle by Yesenia Trevino

“Mom,” I start, “do you mind if I take the twins to Cecilia’s house? I know that you’re tired and, well, I want to go visit Katherine.” Mom looks at me funny as she grabs a broom, “are you sure that you don’t just want to go see Cecilia’s brother?” “Why would I want to do that?” I ask

Pencil Saves Christmas by Martin Garcia

It was two days before Christmas when a boy named Pencil, whom is sort of retarded, saved Christmas! You will probably be thinking how if he is kind of retarded? Well, one morning eating gum that he found in the trash, Pencil went for a walk. Pencil has always been super dumb. He was walking by the street when he found a paper.

“I am so lucky I found a coupon,” he thought with a big smile on his face. At the new McDonalds in Alton, Texas, he stood in line and waited. When he was next in line he gave the coupon to the cashier for a free cat-at-the-pounder. Pencil was saddened. The coupon was expired. He went home crying thinking he wasn’t the sharpest Pencil. When he got home with eyes swollen his mom asked, “Why are you crying?” “McDonalds don’t have cats,” he whined stomping his feet. “McDonalds is a fast food restaurant not the pounder,” she corrected him. “Oh,” he said as if he had never been to a McDonalds in his life. Pencil stopped crying and went to sleep. His mom rolled her eyes and wished she had a pen instead of a pencil.

Tattooed Heart by Rebeca Pena

PART I I literally am the Barbie doll at Richway High. Shiny long strawberry blonde hair, blue eyes, perfect flawless tan skin, pink plump lips, addition to a curvy body. The name is Imogen Leaver or as most people call me, Immie. My life is as normal as any high school senior’s. At least that’s what most people think. It was lunch time, so I made my way toward the café, a fancy word for cafeteria. I grabbed a low-carb salad with ranch dressing

and sat down with my group of friends. They call us The Populars. “Hey guys,” I smiled a million-dollar smile with two dimples appearing on both of my rosy cheeks. “Are you going to eat that?” Chloe pointed at my salad without bothering to say at least a hello. Chloe was one of The Populars, due to the fact she had a pretty nice ass and perfect hair. Who doesn’t like a girl with auburn colored hair and piercing grey eyes? “Yeah, I have to since this will be the only food I’ll eat all day. I’m cheering after school for the Blue Devil’s football team,” she frowned and looked down at her left over food. On my left sat my other friend, Danielle, or Danni. Everyone always confused us since we both looked kind of alike. “So prom is coming up,” Danielle

enthusiastically said as she updated her Facebook status. “Eating lunch with ma’ girls (;” She even took a picture of me with a mouth full of salad… the nerve. “Hey! I wasn’t ready and no!” I replied cleaning my lips trying not to smudge my pale pink lipstick. “Well, better hurry up. It’s only a month away,” Chloe joined into the conversation. A month away! “I don’t even have a dress ready,” I sighed forcefully. “Hey at least you have a boyfriend and we all know he’ll ask you to prom,” Danielle exclaimed. “Speaking about Future Mr. Leaver, here he comes,” laughed Chloe. Blaine walked toward our table followed by some of the other football players. Ironic really, I mean the cheerleader and jock in a

relationship. “Hey, beautiful”, Blaine kissed me on the cheek and sat besides me. To be honest, Blaine was the best boyfriend you could ever find. Like the ones you read about in romance novels and text you “Good morning, beautiful”. Pretty cheesy, but sweet. Except, I don’t have a thing for him anymore. I know what you’re thinking. What the hell is wrong with me? “Oh, look Immie. There’s your Thunder Buddy”, Danielle nudged my arm and smiled. “Honestly Danni. How many times have you seen Ted,” Chloe exclaimed while flirting with Sonny, one of the stoner guys, passing by on his skateboard. Seriously, Chloe could do better than that. When I talk about friendship and I mean real friendship, I’m talking about how Blake Montez and I have been best friends since middle school. Most people would say it’s
