A QUICK NOTE FROM THE EDITOR Your wedding day is a celebration and we encourage you to laugh, get creative, and enjoy! If the idea of following the “rules of wedding planning makes you break out in a cold sweat then throw the rule book out the window. Feel free to stray from tradition in order to create a truly signature event that reflects you as a couple. In this issue you will find fresh ideas for your big day. A blue wedding dress, a pig-roast buffet, a sleeve of tattoos (that you refuse to cover - gasp!), and engagement photos without the meticulously planned outfits or unnatural poses. I hope you find the inspiration and courage to plan an event that is unapologetically you. Create a day that makes your heart happy and it is sure to be a celebration you will never forget. Happy Planning!

BUCKET LIST P U R S U I T O F HAP P I N ES S by Megan Kellin

G

iving the best of ourselves is the easiest way to enrich our own life. When we give the best of ourselves, we become our best version of our self, and we inspire the best in others. Here at Lake Bride Magazine, marriage matters to us - we support it wholeheartedly and want to see people live life... in love... together. So we’re going to take this opportunity to challenge you to not only think about your dream wedding, but... your dream life! That’s right! You’re taking the leap - it’s time to get down to business. And goals are imperative to any successful individual, business, organization, and, you called it, marriage. A fun way to do this is to create a bucket list with your partner. We love the spirit of the “bucket list” as it really does embody everything we’ve learned about goal setting. Goals can motivate us to accomplish things, but the most motivating goals are those that are generally challenging, specific, and coupled with plans for achievement; it’s the exhilaration where hard work meets meaningful experiences. Here is an idea of a marriage bucket list to get you started.

1. Learn the constellations 2. Study and learn a new language 3. Do something extreme and get your Adrenaline pumping together

4. Learn to tango - or any form of dance 5. Travel to another country(s) 6. create a music playlist of your relationship, one per year

7. Travel to another country(s) 8. Learn a new skill - take a pottery class, learn to ski or scuba dive

9. Train and complete a race together 10. Own your dream home - even if it means you have to fix it up first

"You get the best out of others, when you give the best of yourself." - HARVEY S. FIRESTONE

Create your list together. It can be composed of small dreams or big dreams…whatever you plan to do, plan to do it together. www.lakebridemagazine.com

THE PERKS OF PLANNING OFF-PEAK There are big advantages to planning your wedding during the off-peak months. Industry statistics show over 80% of couples get married between the months of May and October. If you choose a date outside of those months you could save big. Consider the following benefits when selecting your wedding date. REDUCED PRICES The law of supply and demand rules. Venues and vendors are slow during the off-peak months. That means lower prices and a willingness to negotiate. The financial advantages of planning outside peak wedding months can be significant, saving you up to 30%. Bonus: Airfares and hotel prices are typically lower during slow season as well, which creates cost savings for your out-of-town guests that they are sure to appreciate. INCREASED ATTENDANCE It is likely that your friends and family receive numerous wedding invitations during the peak months. Competing with other weddings and busy personal schedules means there will be people unable to attend. During the colder months your guests will look forward to the celebration! AVAILABILITY The hot venues, photographers, florists, and other vendors tend to book early. You have a better chance of assembling your wedding dream team, and at a lower price, if you plan during their off season.

NATURAL BEAUTY OF THE SEASON Vibrant fall colors and the rustle of fallen leaves beneath your feet create an air of nostalgia and are often still present during the early weeks of November. Later in the season, a blanket of freshly fallen snow and the crackle of a warm fire can create a fairytale backdrop for a romantic wedding day. Bottom line: you can’t predict the weather. A July wedding may be forced indoors due to rain and a November afternoon could be full of sunshine. Weigh all the factors when selecting your date to determine what works best for you. UNIQUE OPTIONS If you have your heart set on a summer or early fall wedding but still want the benefits of planning off-peak, consider a Friday night soirÊe or a Sunday morning brunch. Saturday nights are prime but vendors are often eager to fill their other weekend days. If most of your guests are local, Friday night weddings are great. An evening ceremony is romantic, sophisticated, and gives you all day to enjoy the preparations. Sunday mornings are a great option for an intimate ceremony followed by a casual brunch. This fresh take on your wedding day will be a welcome new experience for your guests. Everyone loves a great brunch. Bacon. Mimosas. Donuts. Need we say more?!

gilded romance

By: Juliann Ford

Now more than ever, wedding stationery designers and brides alike are thinking outside of the box and pushing the limits with paper items and their overall wedding theme. By using a variety of techniques, mediums, and treasured heirlooms, paper elements are being transformed into timeless keepsakes. Designers are creating pieces with raw edges, organic calligraphy, and are not afraid to manipulate the actual papers themselves. As seen here, gold leaf pieces are meticulously applied throughout the collection for a rich "wow" factor. Beyond the calligraphy and the papers themselves, the use of non-traditional items is becoming prevalent, such as acrylic or glass. Here, the invitation is pressed between a thick glass floating frame preserving this moment forever.

Another unconventional part of the invitation collection is the idea of including two separate response cards, a "gladly accepts" RSVP card and a "sadly declines" RSVP card. Brides especially love this idea since it makes organizing their RSVPs much more streamlined. To complete the intimate celebration, couples are choosing a farm-to-table experience for their guests. Carefully selecting entrees and desserts creates a perfectly coordinated theme. As shown, fresh assorted berries are beautifully displayed on each plate showcasing the charm of farm-to-table. Not only does this make for a pretty place setting, but it also keeps guests content to sip and nibble while their main dish is being served. Finally, there has been a shift from light, airy palettes to dark, bold wedding themes. Brides are embracing rich, moody color schemes that are full of romantic ambience with industrial flair. Pops of bright blooms, soft calligraphy, and linen textures lighten the edgy mood for a perfect balance between the two. The play between the dark tones and the accents of mixed metallics come together to create a striking and dramatic experience. We love taking our cues from nature and are obsessed with these creative, awe-inspiring, hanging trees. By taking your décor to new heights you also leave your tables uncluttered and can opt for smaller, simpler centerpieces. Saving you space and money! very couple wants their big day to be memorable and reflect their personalities. Floral designs are one of the most impactful ways to bring your dream wedding to life and create a big effect through thoughtful details.

Start at the tables. Consider accenting linens with warm fabrics. Add in a faux fur runner, live moss, or even flannels to base your table. Next, add romantic candlelight that makes your wedding day dĂŠcor twinkle with an intimate glow. Then, bring in the floral. From centerpieces to hanging wall art, floral designs can be created in accenting colors, styles, and sizes. Camellia leaves with their deep emerald color and waxy look, and the subtle green and grey tones of silver dollar eucalyptus blend natural and dramatic elements into the floral centerpieces. Textures and moody tones are hot for fall and this combination makes a beautiful and dramatic statement. To make this look really stand out, consider larger textures like metals, wood, air plants, and succulents. Finally, add in details like lavender or rosemary to complete the feel of your vision. The possibilities and combinations are endless. As a floral designer, it is an honor to curate your dream wedding into a reality! By: Dyana Rasinski, Petals & Beans

Engagement photos are about capturing your love without the grandeur of the wedding surrounding you, to take a snapshot of your life together. An in-home, lifestyle session can capture your real life as a couple. It is relaxed, casual, and authentic. You can do the things you really do together - like cook dinner, cuddle on the couch, or share a cup of coffee. Nothing tells your story more than the details of your home. Even if you feel like your home isn’t perfectly decorated or "complete" someday you will look back at this place with nostalgia. It will be the place where you started your life together. If this laid-back style appeals to you - kick off your shoes, relax, and put on some casual clothes. The location and inspiration are already taken care of! Pig roasts at a luau or backyard shindig? Sure thing! But a hog gracing the presence of a wedding reception? NO WAY. That is, until now. Throw out your preconceived ideas about pig roasts; having a heavenly hog at your wedding is not only an amusing and exciting topic of

conversation, but can be included as an elegant addition to your overall wedding atmosphere. Caterers offering a full pig display are aware of the traditional stigma that comes with pig roasts, so extraordinary consideration is taken to boost the ambiance from country-bumpkin to rustic-chic. Scratch the red and white-checkered table covers and imagine crisp white linens, patina baskets, and carefully curated décor to enhance the spread. The Saucy Sow has become particularly thoughtful about how the “guest of honor” can enrich the elegance of a marriage celebration—No more apples for the pig’s snout... instead a beautiful splay of flowers will adorn the crown of the beastly main course. Pig roasts have evolved; the idea that they are an acceptable option for informal events only has transformed into a specialized, innovative, and sophisticated alternative to traditional catering choices that will complement any couples desire for matrimony merriment. Husband and wife team, Caleb and Amber, have a knack for roasting, catering, and having a great time. KEEPER OF THE FIRE

ERIC VEST PHOTOGRAPHY

By: Rick and Nancy Herman

Non-traditional weddings are becoming more common in this age of individuality. “Doing it the way it’s always been done” is not always accepted by those who wish to reflect their own style and what they care about. Wood fired ovens create a unique experience in the world of cuisine. The flames deep within the wood fired oven catch your attention. The aroma of the burning oak draws you

closer. Simple as it may be, the process of baking the pie is not only in the cooking; it is a performance of which families never tire. The intrigue and anticipation makes the freshout-of-the-oven moment that much better and wood fired ovens bring flavor forward unlike any other oven. To create a memorable culinary event that not only you, but your wedding guests, family, and friends will never forget, you might want to consider serving wood fired pizza. We bring our mobile wood fired oven on site to your wedding, rehearsal dinner, or bachelor/ bachelorette party and serve your guests Northwoods-inspired artisan pizzas. Our experienced pizzaiolo and his staff are passionate about pizza. That's why every item on the menu is prepared by hand. Fresh ingredients, hand-chopped vegetables, roasted peppers, homemade sauces, locally-sourced, and specially prepared hand-pulled pork, chicken and our secret ingredient sausage are featured on our diverse menu. The wild rice used is hand-harvested in the Northwoods. Made fresh for your event, our highly-praised dough is hand-rolled. Lovingly created on site, each pie is hand-stretched and topped to create the perfect thin crust pizza. You can taste the love infused in the homemade tomato, pesto, bbq, and roasted garlic oil sauces that begin the pie creation. Right out of our 900º oven, our pizzas are hot and fresh for

G+K GRACE AND KIEL

Grace and Kiel met at an outdoor food and music festival at Golden Gate Park in San Francisco. Kiel had been living in San Francisco for 2 days; Grace was in town as a tourist from New York City. Grace was there with her friend Betty exploring all that the city had to offer. Kiel, on the other hand, had been dragged there by his friend and roommate, Aron, in search of free food. After about an hour of wandering, both parties ended up at the beer tent. Betty approached Aron to request his assistance in taking a photo. This is when Kiel took notice of Grace for the first time. Her unbridled laughter and unique freckles had his attention. After handing Betty back her phone, Kiel told Aron we should get them to take a picture of us as well. To this Aron responded "I don't want a photo with you." With Aron missing the point, Kiel used that special non-verbal language that wingmen share to explain, "I don't want a photo with you either but I want to talk to that girl.” Immediately understanding, Aron asked for them to return the favor. It did not take long before conversation was flowing. Kiel, not wanting to say goodbye, asked Grace for her number with the intention of meeting later for drinks. Later that night, Kiel did call her. The conversation that night came easy as they found more in common than not. Their love for fitness, travel, and family all surfaced that first night. Grace's fun-loving nature was apparent and Kiel could not believe such a beautiful woman could also make him laugh so much. With Grace leaving the next day, Kiel asked if they could go for a run together before she left. At that point Kiel and Grace knew this was something that would persist despite the distance. After six months of long distance dating, Grace moved from NYC to SanFrancisco. Then, after two years together in the Golden City, they were engaged. Tim Larsen Photography When it came time to plan their wedding they knew northern Minnesota was the perfect destination. The groom’s family has a cabin just outside of Crosslake and Grace and Kiel have always loved “lake living” and their time there.

ALYSSA + DAVE

ALYSSA AND DAVE Dave and Alyssa met in 2009 on Lake Minnetonka through mutual friends. Unfortunately the timing wasn’t right as they were both dating someone else. Nonetheless, Dave nurtured their friendship by inviting Alyssa boating every weekend that summer. Once summer came to an end, Dave and Alyssa blew their separate ways like leaves in the fall. The two didn't meet again until 2015 when Dave reached out to Alyssa on a gloomy spring day. This time it was right. Just a few months after Dave came back into Alyssa's life her father, Joe Ebel, suddenly passed away. Dave only met Joe once but it was a true blessing he had that opportunity and could be there for Alyssa as she grieves the difficult loss. Dave proposed to Alyssa during a Florida vacation in February 2016 and they married in Voyageurs National Park only eight months later. The location holds a special place in Alyssa’s heart as she grew up on Ash River Trail, just outside of Voyageurs. Ash Trail Lodge owners Deb and Steve Wieber did an incredible job facilitating the very DIY wedding decoration theme, food, entertainment, tent, and more. Additional special thanks to the several volunteers ranging from friends, family, other local resort/cabin owners, and more who were involved in the big day. Today, the couple happily resides in South Minneapolis and are expecting their first baby.

TONI + BEAU

T+ B TONI AND BEAU

LOVE STORY. I always wanted a very private proposal, nothing over-the-top or extravagant. At the time of the proposal, we had a German Shepherd puppy named Myla and she was a very important part of our lives. One night after work while sitting on the couch at home Beau asked me to call Myla because she had gotten into the trash can. I called her over and around her neck was a bow with a ring attached to it. Beau walked over, got down on his knee, took the ring off of Myla, and asked me to marry him. Being an event manager and having planned many weddings, I knew I wanted a stress-free wedding day. I wanted all my friends and family to come, relax, and have an amazing time. That’s why we chose to get married on New Year’s Eve. We wanted a big celebration to enjoy with family and friends. Even with small details not going perfectly as planned, our wedding day was flawless from start to finish.

ADVICE TO COUPLES My first piece of advice would be, let yourself be in the moment. So many people get caught up in details that are ultimately minimal to the success of your wedding day. Keep in mind that at the end of the day you just married your best friend and that’s what matters most. Make sure you find some time throughout the day to be alone with one another. The day goes by so fast but it’s important to have a little bit of alone time. My second piece of advice is, hire an amazing photographer who you trust to capture the special day. Besides your memories, the photos and videos will be what you have to look back at in the years to come. I believe that the photographer and videographer were some of the most important pieces to the success of our wedding. Remember, have fun and don’t sweat the small things. You only get married once, so it should be all you’ve ever wanted. 67

SOURCES PHOTOGRAPHY Emilee Elofson Photography VENUE Everwood Farmstead WEDDING COORDINATOR Bridget Borden WEDDING PARTY We chose not to have bridesmaids and groomsmen. Our mothers María Del Pilar Soto Suárez and Jean Elizabeth Rothstein stood up for us. TUXEDOS Because we wanted it to be rather casual, we chose to wear non-matching pants and sports coats rather than tuxedos. CATERER We love good food. We chose to source our brunch from some of our favorite grocers and restaurants. Our breads came from Rustica Bakery and Broders Deli, pastries from Patrick's Bakery and Cafe, cheeses from Kowalski's Market, olives from Bill's Import Foods, and quiche from Key's Cafe. DESSERT Rather than a wedding cake we chose to serve a variety of fresh fruit pies from Key's Cafe and ice creams from Sonny's. DÉCOR Our good friends, Bill Underwood and Chris Everett, own Everwood Farmstead, located on 42 acres of rolling farmland. We have spent a good deal of time there and wanted to honor its natural beauty. Bill and Chris have gathered a great collection of vintage wooden chairs and tables over the years. Peter's sister sewed runners for the tables made of unbleached muslin. Sunshine Blue Vintage China provided the place settings, glassware, and pie stands WEDDING RINGS We have simple bands from Bergstrom Jewelers. We had been wearing them for several years, having made a commitment to each other before we were able to legally marry. We had our wedding date engraved on the inside of the rings. FLORAL Our good friend Larry Pfarr created floral arrangements using wild flowers and grasses from the property. WEDDING CEREMONY Peter's sister Carol Culp was the officiant. Our friends Jennifer Grimm and Joe Cruz provided the music. Joe is an extraordinary guitar player and Jennifer sang a number of songs, some in English and others in Spanish. The readings, spoken in English and Spanish, included William Shakespeare, Walt Whitman, Victor Hugo, and the Old Testament. VIDEOGRAPHER We chose not to have a videographer. Peter works as a stage director of live theater. The beauty and power of live theater is that it takes place in shared space and time. You simply can't capture it on film or tape. In other words, you had to be there. If the performance lingers in any way it will be in the memory of those who experienced it. We wanted our wedding to have the same dynamic.

K+E KACIE AND EDDIE They should make movies with Eddie and Kacie's story - seriously - it is that good! In a world infiltrated by social media where texting, Snapchat, and friend requests are usually the first move toward a relationship, Eddie and Kacie shared an old-fashioned "fate" meeting. It was a beautiful evening on Pokegama Lake and Eddie was out fishing with his dog Merica. Kacie was enjoying a walk with her dog Maple along the shoreline. Merica jumped from the boat and went to make a new friend with Maple. When Eddie came to shore to get Merica he met Kacie. The rest is history! Two years later Eddie took Kacie back to that place they met on the shore of Pokegama and he asked her to be his fishing partner for life; to be his wife for the rest of his days. She said "yes" and they boated across the lake for an island picnic. Their wedding day was as beautiful as it was fun. The easy-going couple created a weekend to remember for family and friends from both near and far. Classic gold and white was stunning in the winter landscape. And the men in uniform weren't too bad themselves.
