BOUQUETS

Jeannine Marie Photography

By: Raechel Schwarze - KD Floral & Gardens

Compact, round bouquets will always be classic, but we’re seeing a shift toward looser and more organically shaped bouquets. Wild tendrils and vines, lots of open bold blooms and foliages help to create a foraged aesthetic. Contributing to this style is a desire for local flowers. Handpicking beautiful blooms from local growers make each bouquet unique and personal.

Corsages and boutonnieres are classic. But why not try something more unexpected like shoulder corsages, floral necklaces or, the increasingly popular, floral crown. Although it’s always been an option for flower girls we’re seeing more and more brides claim their own crown, as well as for bridesmaids. Even your four-legged attendees can get in on this trend!

RUNWAY TO REALITY Two-Piece

There is no rule that you have to wear a one-piece wedding dress on your big day. Consider bridal separates like a trendy crop top style. Or for a more subtle approach, add a long-sleeve lace top for a traditional style during the ceremony that can be easily transitioned into a party-perfect look at the reception. *Tip – Remember you should show skin selectively. If you choose a midriff baring style stick to a higher neckline.

STYLE

RUNWAY TO REALITY Peplum

The peplum trend is one we’ve seen come and go since the 19th century. This popular style emphasizes the waist and gives volume to the hips to create an hourglass figure. It’s a great style for a bride who wants to add curves or balance out a large bust. Keep the rest of your silhouette simple as the peplum is already an exaggerated detail and it can speak for itself. If you are searching for a trendy, yet classic look the peplum may be your answer. *Tip – A peplum can make you look curvier or shorter so try it with high heels or platforms!

Registry

The Complete Package #shopsmall By: Tara Hallie

It is exciting to see the shop small movement picking up steam. We encourage couples to also think about registering small! Through conversation and oneon-one attention from a knowledgeable boutique shop, couples can create a wish list of products tailored to their individual needs. Our philosophy is simple: we believe in taking the time to walk through the store so we may discuss product benefits and different options based on each couple’s wants and desires. We will never hand registrants a scanning device (as fun as that may be!) or ask you to create a wedding registry online by yourself. We believe in the complete package: asking questions, touching merchandise, smelling or tasting products, and visually placing products together to create a cohesive mix that will not only craft aesthetic harmony, but function perfectly in your new lives together. This experience simply cannot be replicated with online or big box registry alone.

Although we believe in personally assisting couples in the store to create the registry, we know it is imperative for our couples’ guests to be able to view and shop from the registry online. This is the future of retail and while we strive to maintain a small-town boutique feel, we have adapted to the changing needs of our registrants and customers. In May 2015, we launched our new website complete with the option of shopping from gift registries. If one chooses to shop online, we remain committed to our boutique services through complimentary gift wrapping and in-town delivery for purchases made from wedding registries, in addition to world-wide shipping options. We love making gift giving easy and enjoyable! Let us help you turn a gift of utilitarian products, such as kitchen gadgets and mixing bowls, into a gift worth a thousand words: baking utensils paired with linens and gourmet foods in a mixing bowl or cooking essentials along with seasonings, oils and vinegars in a stew-

pot to create a one-of-a-kind gift. Let us show you the Jenny & Company experience! From beginning to end we have you covered. We encourage you to shop and register small with Jenny & Company for all of your gift needs! Jenny & Company ~ Gifts • Gourmet • Home www.jennyandcompany.com Grand Rapids

Venue Spotlight

FireFly Event Barn Nevis, MN

Barn weddings. They’re rustic, charming, chic, vintage, and all kinds of other wonder; it’s just that there aren’t very many event barns in northern Minnesota. The search was on. Brent and Lindsey Nicklason, a young couple who grew up in Nevis, moved back to their hometown roots several years ago and began searching for the perfect barn to renovate. “We found a lot of barns around the area, but none were suited for events like this one is,” Brent says. “They looked huge, but when we toyed with numbers we couldn’t fit more than 150 in them. They weren’t worth it.” After they realized a gem of a barn on a hill near Nevis would be perfect for an event venue, they purchased the 25-acre property in late spring 2014 from a kindly older couple who had taken exceptional care of the place. They then renovated it together for a full year before embarking on their first season as FireFly Event Barn in April 2015, with a full lineup of 20 events scheduled for the premier year. “We want this old barn to be a big blessing for our community,” says Lindsey. “It’s just waiting for more. You can feel the energy when you walk through the doors. It was an old dairy barn built in the mid-1900s; some parts of the property were used as a printing press in the late 1900s. So much character here.” FireFly is a gorgeous 6,000 square foot white barn with three wings that altogether host about 300 guests, with approximately 200 in the Grand Room. The barn boasts a custom bar built by Brent, a food prep area for caterers, six bathroom stalls converted from calving stalls, heating and cooling units, a West Room for additional meal seating or meeting space, and a rather grandiose entryway, which is one of Lindsey’s favorites. “We open this up for weddings and it’s just dreamy with all the twinkling lights and the moss chandelier!”

MOMENTS IN M TION

THE IMPORTANCE OF A WEDDING VIDEO

By David Cowardin-Lola Visuals

W

e were filming a wedding in the Twin Cities two years ago, when we had just finished plugging an audio recorder into the sound system at the reception and were setting up two low-profile lights. The bride’s grandfather, who was in his nineties, was about to sing a song to the newly wedded couple.

We had two cameras prepared to capture the moment; one framed on the grandfather and the second on the couple. When the grandfather hit his first note, a tingly sensation surged across my skin. His voice was incredible, yet weathered with age and experience. “Our love is here to stay,” he sang in a calming, reassuring voice. Everyone stopped what they were doing and listened. They lowered their phones, cupcakes, and cocktails and focused their attention on the 90-year-old man giving up his heart in song. When you hire a videographer, you hire them to capture moments like that— moments that represent the love and strength of family. In many ways, a videographer’s job is similar to that of a photographer. They should document all of the big moments of your wedding while using their creative eye to bring those moments to life. They should be easy to work with and able to make you feel comfortable. If you know what to look for in a videographer you will never regret hiring someone to capture one of your life’s biggest moments in motion.

34

DELIVERABLES

Your videographer should provide you with the following: A Highlight The highlight is a short, cinematic film. The imagery is clean and beautiful and the audio is crisp. It should make you feel like you’re reliving your wedding day. A highlight can vary in length depending on the company you hire. Just like photographers, videographers have their own unique styles. Watch some of their highlight videos to get a feel for their work. Main Event Recordings Your videographer should provide you with full recordings of the main events including the ceremony, speeches and dances. Different package options might affect how these moments are covered. For example, a single shooter package might mean fewer video angles. Decide what you need and be sure your videographer is able to deliver. Personalized Packaging Ask your videographer how they plan to deliver your videos.

STYLE

Your videographer should have good shooting and editing style. Shooting Techniques There are many tools and tricks used by videographers to help create a specific feel in their videos. Some videographers use a lot of hand-held video that is shakier and raw, while others stick to tripods to ensure their video is level and smooth. Some like to pan and tilt fast while others prefer slower, subtler camera movements. If your videographer doesn’t have examples to share with you, tread carefully. You should have an idea of what to expect before hiring them. Does the idea of hiring a video crew make you nervous? Would you prefer your videographers take more of a ‘fly on the wall’ approach? Just ask!

Editing Techniques The biggest difference to look for in editing style is how your videographer uses audio. If you’ve ever been blown away by a wedding video, it likely included audio from the ceremony and speeches to give it a very personal, storytelling feel. This is one of the most important factors to consider. You want a personalized product that reflects the uniqueness of your wedding and the people involved. A wedding video that artfully uses sound bites from speeches and vows from the ceremony is going to feel more alive than a sequence of images set to a song. With that being said, be sure to make it possible for your videographer to record good sound. Run speeches through a speaker system that your videographer can plug into or hire a DJ.

Audio Quality Ask your videographer how they capture audio. Techniques vary but they should have a plan for getting clean audio on your ceremony and speeches.

Highlight Music Ask your videographer if they license the music they use. If they don’t have permission to use the music in your highlight video, copyright could become an issue. Just like a bad filter can ruin a good photo, a bad song can ruin a wedding video. If you like the style of your videographer, trust in them to find the right music. We typically spend two to four hours deciding on the right music and try to find something timeless that won’t degrade over time.

INVESTMENT

TECHNICAL

Your videographer should provide quality imagery. Image Quality Your videographer should be shooting in high definition (1,920 pixels wide by 1,080 pixels tall). Standard definition won’t cut it. At Lola Visuals, we shoot in high definition and even have the option to shoot at higher quality. Be sure to ask your videographer if they have lighting. Reception venues are often dark, forcing videographers to crank up on their camera’s light sensitivity, which will render video that has more digital “noise.” Your videographer should have the ability to use lighting when needed or have a camera that performs exceptionally in low light conditions.

Drones Drones are the newest toys to enter the world of wedding videography. They capture stunning aerial shots that until recently were reserved for big budget productions. Keep in mind that drones serve a very specific purpose and should not be overused. If your videographer uses their drone indoors, be wary. Aerial shots are great for establishing a sense of place but if overused, your video won’t feel as grand as you might assume.

Your videographer should be an investment, not an afterthought. Price A good wedding videographer will usually charge anywhere from $2,000 to $4,000 but don’t be surprised to see numbers much higher. Video editing takes a lot of time and files are often large and need to be backed up on multiple hard drives. Having the ability to share your wedding video collections with your future children and grandchildren is simply priceless. How to Save Consider finding a company that can handle photography and videography, perhaps they offer a bulk service package. You will save money and the hassle of dealing with two separate businesses. If you do decide to hire each service independently, be sure to introduce your photographer to your videographer so they can get to know how the other works and make a game plan for working together efficiently.

PICTURE PERFECT

ENGAGEMENT P H O T O S

Engagement photos are an opportunity to let your personalities shine. Follow these simple tips to keep them fun and personal.

Be Yourself

Incorporating your hobbies is a great way to show who you are as a couple. It will also give you something to do in your photos which makes them feel fun and natural. Don’t overthink it…..just be you and be in love!

Effortlessly Stylish

Think coordinating, not matching. Choose outfits with a complementary color palette. Your clothing should also appear appropriate for the activity, location, and season. Aim for classic style over current trends to ensure timeless images.

Location. Location. Location.

Consider taking your photos in a location that is important to you as a couple. Perhaps it is where you met, where you got engaged, or your favorite place to spend time together. The backdrop you choose helps paint the picture of your life together.

Relax

Prepare your outfits and location in advance so you can get a good night’s sleep the night before. That morning, take time to pamper yourself while getting ready. The less stressed you are, the happier and more relaxed you will look in front of the camera. Use the day to have fun and connect with your fiancé. That emotion will shine through in your photos.

Get Comfortable with Your Photographer

Engagement photos are the perfect opportunity to get to know your photographer. These sessions are generally more casual and relaxed than the big day so use it to learn how your photographer works and to get comfortable in front of their lens. It’s also a great time to practice a make-up trial run!

Floral by Fleurtation by NSE

With each day of spring, we celebrate the return of green to the Northland. For this styled shoot the color palette of ivory, sage green and vintage gold accents inspired us to create a look celebrating the natural beauty of spring. Elements of wild greenery, birch chargers, metallic gold antlers, and cinnamon rolls each invoke a sense of rustic, Minnesota charm. Adding elements from nature such as olive branches and artichokes presents a unique twist on rustic, natural wedding flowers.

39

Geometric shapes and rich colors capped off with gold inspired us to create this look. Native to Lake Superior, agates and minerals play a central role in the northern Minnesota landscape. Their unique beauty lends a modern style to a wedding designed for a nature-loving couple. Lavender, peach and mustard pop off the navy blue linen and a gold terrarium filled with beach sand and gorgeous blooms has us swooning. Exotic bouquets of King Protea, garden roses and air plants add a refreshing mix of blooms to the look. This tablescape reflects an unexpected blend of nature, history, and modernity - perfect for today's couples.

40

Inspired by the Pantone colors for 2016, Rose Quartz and Serenity Blue, this look pairs shades of pink and blue with fresh modern elements of silver, mirror and lucite. Bouquets feature budding florals in pastels that add romance and life to the spring bridal look. Bluebirds sing with spring and the mirrored signage says it best, “Take Me To Spring. Let The Flowers Bloom and Our Love Grow. We hope this look inspires couples to play with this trending color palette and incorporate signs of spring in their bridal style.

Edana & Ian’s intimate wedding took place in Duluth, where the couple took their first romantic getaway together. Every detail of the day was thoughtfully picked, designed, or purchased by the bride and groom. Both creatives, they wanted their wedding and reception to be representative of their love and lifestyle….easygoing, unique, personal, natural and timeless. The couple’s vision led to a stylish, effortless, and intimate vacation for their closest family and friends.

ADVICE:

• Shut out all the outside opinions and make the day what you want it to be. Succumbing to everyone else’s opinions of what your day should be like is a very steep, slippery slope. • The only regret I have from our wedding day was not investing in a local coordinator to take care of any last minute unforeseen needs or questions throughout the day. No matter how organized your to-do list is or how well you plan, there will be things that are forgotten or realized last minute. • Block some time for a First Look. You will still get the excitement and anticipation of seeing each other for the first time, but the extra pressure of all your guests watching is eliminated. It was such an emotional moment for us and I was so happy that we got to keep it personal and intimate.

STORY I grew up spending my summers at my family cabin on Gull Lake. I would go to Grand View Lodge with my family all the time; my cousins and I would play in the game room and we would listen to the Mraz Brothers play at the Northwood’s Lounge. Ever since I was a little girl I dreamt of getting married at Grand View Lodge and walking down the “Grand Staircase”; my dream came true! ADVICE On the wedding day, remember to always step back and enjoy the moment; give yourself 30 seconds every so often to “take it all in.” Don’t forget to eat and stay hydrated! Even though you will be so busy talking with all the guests, it is important that you enjoy the food, too! PROPOSAL My husband proposed to me on Fort Myers Beach in Florida. He proposed with a “message in a bottle” during sunset.

We decided our # 1 priority was to celebrate our love with our closest family and friends, avoiding new introductions and only celebrating with people we both knew. We wanted to have fun. You hear over and over how stressful wedding planning can be so we made it a point to combat that. We picked the wedding traditions we liked and we modified the rest. This was our day and we truly made it work for us. We wanted our guests to know what to expect so we made our wedding invite a board game. Only fun here, people. Our gracious and amazing friend hosted our wedding at her home overlooking the river. She and some old waitress friends helped cook and bartend. We served butler style apps all night. We had yard games around the venue so our guests had something to do. We held our ceremony in the middle of the reception and ended the night with martinis, sparklers, fireworks and dancing. Seeing it all come together was worth the work and Pinterest saved our lives. The love in the air on all levels was magical. Advice: Sometimes your honeymoon will suck. That's okay. Squealing rental cars, being seasick and missing your flight is funny. Things happen and if your travel partner can take the hits with you, it makes life much easier. Weddings are stressful, if you make them stressful. Plans may change and things may not go as you envisioned, but everything happens for a reason. For us, the next idea was always better anyway.

After the "I DO's" Name Change

Making it Official BY MEGAN KELLIN

Congratulations

on getting married! Congratulations on getting through the ceremony and sorting through all of the details that the big day entails! Congratulations on joining your lives and starting off on this new adventure! …Congratulations, Congratulations, Congratulations… Now it’s time to get down to business. If you plan to change your name, may I suggest doing it before wedding dust settles; the process can be a smidge daunting but it’s only a few steps and just requires a little organization and even more patience. Plus, some states have time limits for filing it [so] easily. You can handle this! Here’s how... Take your new marriage license (the real one, not a copy) to your local Social Security office, along with two forms of identification. They'll file a copy and issue you a confirmation page that you'll take to the Department of Motor Vehicles, along with your marriage license, to get your new driver's license. Don't forget to change your passport, too, as that can be a hassle if you forget and try to travel internationally. It's a simple 1-2-3 process with the third step completed by mail if your local U.S. Post Office doesn't provide on-site facilities.

The Steps

There are three major steps involved in changing your name.

Step One: The List

First you need to make a list of everything that you have under your non-married name. Typically your list will include things like: • Your ID/Driver's License • Your Social Security Card • Your Passport • Your HR Information at work • Your Bank Account • Credit Card Accounts • Your Rental agreement/Mortgage agreement • The Title and Registration for your vehicle (if you have one) • Your Library Card • Your Gym Membership • Store Discount Cards • Magazine Subscriptions • Online Profiles

Step Two: Prioritize

Obviously it is going to be more important to change some of these things than others. Your legal identification (driver's license or ID card), and your social security card should be at the top of that list.

*Tip – Consider keeping your "maiden" name as your middle name. This has proven invaluable over the years, as I've discovered places I forgot to change my name — random car rental points or airline frequent flyer miles, for example. It's also important for reconnecting with old friends on social media.

Step Three: Take Action

While you are waiting to receive your new social security cards and photo IDs (this can take longer in some states than in others. In New York it can take a month. In Oregon it takes about a week), you can get the ball rolling with your employer and at places like your bank. These typically will accept the temporary paperwork.

More good news:

There are some really great online tools that will help you streamline this process. Head to our website to find more information on changing your name and the platforms that offer a centralized online portal that help you track everything you need to do and how to keep organized, step-by-step. Now, relax. After all, what matters is that you are married and you are starting a brand new adventure with your partner!

Finances for Newlyweds 80

BY KRISTINA GAALAAS If you’re getting married, you no doubt have many exciting details to discuss with your spouse-to-be. But after you get back from the honeymoon, you’ll want to have another discussion — about your finances. It might not sound glamorous, but couples who quickly “get on the same page” regarding their financial situation are actually taking a step that can help them immensely as they build their lives together. As you start talking about your finances, be sure to cover these areas: •Separate or joint checking/savings accounts — Some couples create joint checking and savings accounts, others keep everything separate and still others find a middle ground — joint accounts along with smaller, separate accounts. There’s really no one “right” way for everyone, but whichever method you choose, make sure you’re both aware of where your money is, how it can be accessed, and by whom. •Debts — Both you and your spouse may be bringing in debts, such as student loans or credit cards, to the marriage. You don’t necessarily have to do everything possible to get rid of these debts immediately, but you should set up reasonable payment plans that will allow you to lower your overall debt load so you can free up money to invest for the future. •Spending and saving — Newlyweds are often surprised to discover how different they are from each other in the area of spending versus saving. You don’t have to try to radically change each other, but you both need to be aware that your spending and saving decisions now have

greater consequences than when you were both single. To illustrate: If one of you is more of a spender and is used to running up big credit card bills, these actions can clearly affect both of you. To avoid problems of this type, you will need to communicate clearly with each other. •Goals — It’s important for married couples to clearly establish their financial goals. Do you want to purchase a house? If so, when? If you’re going to have children, will you want to help them pay for college? When do each of you want to retire? And what sort of retirement lifestyle do you have in mind? By answering these and other key questions, you’ll be formulating a set of goals. And from there, you can devise a strategy for attaining these goals. •Investment styles — Both you and your spouse will unquestionably need to invest if you are going to achieve your goals, such as a comfortable retirement. However, each of you may have a different investment style — for example, one of you might be an aggressive investor, willing to take more risk for the possibility of greater returns, while the other is more conservative, ready to accept lower returns in exchange for greater preservation of principal. To pursue your strategy for reaching your objectives, each of you may have to compromise somewhat on your “investment personality.” To achieve this balance, you may need to consult with a financial advisor. Finances are an important part of any marriage. By communicating regularly and working together, you and your spouse can build a solid financial foundation for your lives together.
