POSSIBLE BECAUSE OF YOU Lakeside School is a mission-driven school.

In addition to doing our best to offer our students dynamic and creative academic and co-curricular programs, we talk to them about living ethical lives, helping others, being good citizens and, when necessary, courageous leaders. We want Lakesiders to use their considerable talents to make the world a better place for everyone. Last year, we conducted a survey of young alumni, Lakeside’s classes of 2007 through 2016, and asked them a variety of missionrelated questions. You will find quotes from that survey throughout this report of contributions. Thirty percent of our alumni responded, and they were open about their experiences. They told us how Lakeside shaped their lives, not only academically but also in how they view and approach the world. In free-write responses, they explained in 43,614 words what Lakeside meant to them and how they continue

in their education and service to others, work toward a balanced life (even if this is sometimes hard to achieve), prioritize friendships and family, and live and work with people from many backgrounds. It was all inspiring to read! Lakeside is living its mission with our students, and that mission is making a difference in their lives beyond Lakeside. My sincere thanks to each and every one of you who made a contribution to the school this year. We simply could not successfully achieve our mission without your help! Thank you, everyone.

Bernie Noe P’07 ’09 Head of School

“Ultimately, everything I know about myself and the world is by the grace of my teachers, my peers, and my time at Lakeside. In seven years, I learned how to think – not only critically, but with rigor, clarity, and empathy. That has been, and always will be, my greatest asset and the most amazing gift.” — ALUMNUS ’13

“Lakeside contributed significantly to my life in three key ways: it stimulated me intellectually and imbued within me a deep and consistent desire to learn; it taught me to think critically, ask questions, and challenge conventional ways of understanding; and, it built within me a self-awareness of the importance of balance in living well.” — ALUMNA ’10

“[Lakeside taught me] the pursuit of being an ethical person, a kind person, and a global citizen. To do what’s right for the environment, for one’s community, and to do something audacious and meaningful with one’s life.” — ALUMNA ’07

Faculty/Staff Campaign

It’s striking to me, after all these years, that Lakeside’s mission still resounds so clearly in my life today, perhaps even more strongly than it did at graduation. A lifelong love of learning, a healthy dose of skepticism, and a respect for what others can teach us about ourselves and this world that we inhabit together, are all gifts from my time at Lakeside that I truly can’t put a price on. —

“” You have formed the person I am today. I am truly indebted and grateful. I studied in college. But I learned in high school. —

Lakeside, and my classmates at Lakeside, showed me the type of people I want to continue to surround myself with: those who are not only intelligent, creative, and passionate, but those who are kind, ethical, thoughtful, and deeply caring about others around them. —

ALUMNA ’13

“” I am so grateful Lakeside taught me to think critically about the information and sources I’m presented with, to question and investigate the unexpected, and to seek out diverse perspectives. —

ALUMNA ’08

Lakeside inspired me to be passionate about social justice, leadership, community, diversity, and ethics. I’m tremendously grateful for the way Lakeside’s mission shaped me during my formative years. — ALUMNUS ’08

For the first time in my life, when I attended Lakeside I felt as though I was amongst a group of intellectual peers who in turn pushed me to be the best person I can be when it comes to my actions towards others, finding meaning in life, and giving back. —

ALUMNA ’12

15

Lakeside taught me to be a doer and not to be afraid of setting high goals, and taking a path outside of my comfort zone and different from my peers. —

ALUMNA ’09

16

The most significant aspect of my Lakeside experience was the passion expressed in both students and faculty. People were just doing what they loved. This spirit is what encouraged me to step up my game. They gave me a green light and an environment to just go for it, and that sense of exploration and self-advocacy has stayed with me beyond graduation.” —
