The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) offers an impressive selection of educational and social opportunities for adults age 50 and older. With a purpose to promote lifelong learning and continued intellectual and personal growth for retirement-age individuals, OLLI has become the place for fun, interactive learning in a safe and encouraging environment. Our curriculum draws from the interests, talents and experiences of older adult learners. Academic courses are college level (without the homework, term papers and tests), and cover everything

DIRECTOR’S NOTES Dick Harp, Director After much thought, and a great deal of emotion, I have decided to retire from our OLLI program and KSU. What a wonderful privilege it has been to be part of the finest continuing education program in the country and have had the opportunity to start what is now our OLLI program. I enjoyed many years in the banking industry, but the enjoyment and satisfaction of being involved with KSU was much greater. It provided the opportunity to directly help seniors and improve their lives. I will greatly miss being part of it and all of the friends I have made over the last 19 years. Our previous program, “Senior University,” was very small with only a handful of students. Our dean, Barbara Calhoun, asked me to consider helping to revive the program. We hosted an event for the few students we had and asked for suggestions for improving our seniors’ program. After the reception, the last woman to leave said, “Thank you for giving me the first excuse in eight months since my husband died to get dressed and get out of the house.” I made a commitment then and there to do everything we could to improve the lives of seniors. The affiliation with OLLI happened accidentally. I was on a plane and read a magazine article about the Osher Foundation. They were soliciting applications from colleges and universities that wanted to start a program to benefit seniors. After contacting the Osher Foundation, they sent us an application, which we completed and submitted. We received the wonderful news that we were accepted into the program and received our initial grant of $100,000. Our name changed to “Osher Lifelong Learning Institute.” The Foundation is named after Bernard Osher, the

philanthropist who funded the Foundation with millions of his own funds. Several months later, we received another $100,000 grant. A year later, the Foundation stated they liked what we were doing and provided a million dollar endowment for the program. A second unsolicited milliondollar endowment followed a year later. We were ecstatic! Those Osher Foundation gifts enabled us to provide a computer lab for our members, equip the OLLI Suite and Club Room and helped subsidize our program, which keeps a low membership cost. We started with six courses and 50 students. Now, we average more than 400 courses and serve over 3,400 students annually. I feel comfortable about retiring now for several reasons. The program will be in the capable hands of Pat Walker, and it’s doing well and continues to grow. There are many stories of lives that have been touched. I want to thank everyone for the opportunity I have enjoyed being part of this program. What a wonderful experience it has been. I will miss the many friendships, everyone enjoying themselves at the socials, and the wonderful KSU people that helped us offer our programs. Your OLLI program will continue to grow and provide all members the opportunity to improve their lives. Enjoy yourselves! Hope to see you in class soon.

nch Classes Present Opportunity D Did you know French is the second-most

widely learned foreign language after English? According to the OIF, an international organization of French-speaking countries, more than 220 million people speak French on five continents. Additionally, French is the only language, alongside English, that is taught in every country in the world. In fact, the OIF estimates the number of French speakers to be 445 million worldwide by 2060. The benefits of learning French are plentiful. Even a basic knowledge of French can make traveling easier and more enjoyable, allowing you to communicate with people at hotels, restaurants, and transit systems. Also, if you desire to learn several languages, French is a good place to begin because it’s reasonably easy for English speakers to pick up. For these reasons, our OLLI program is excited to announce the launch of our new French classes. Three levels will be taught by two talented and diverse individuals – Vladia Lartey and Cheryl Kothe. Vladia is a native French speaker who felt it was important to offer this program through OLLI. Cheryl initially took an OLLI Spanish course and the teachers encouraged her to explore the idea of teaching French for OLLI. She previously taught secondary school French in Canada for 25 years.

When discussing the importance of learning French, Cheryl said, “One can easier appreciate French gastronomy and fashion by learning this beautiful language. Studying French will open the doors to various cultures and their literary, musical, architectural, and art works as well as their technological and scientific discoveries.” She also says it’s important to include the integration of culture in the classroom. The use of visual aids and gestures is essential along with the actual reading of written words to work both sides of the brain and increase the retention of new vocabulary. Vladia and Cheryl are excited about the unique opportunity to teach OLLI students. Cheryl said, “Teaching adults is different as they bring so much additional knowledge to the classroom from past life experiences. This creates a very rich classroom environment in which everyone can partake. The adults are all motivated to learn for a variety of reasons, and this is unique from other classrooms that I have taught.” Vladia added, “Senior adults are self-motivated and learning is not a need anymore, but a want. They want to learn for fun or for personal interests. That makes the teaching experience more appealing and the classroom environment stress-free.” Our French classes have begun! Students will learn the Legend and the History of the Native American flute. Learn how the flute was originally used by the Plains Indians and how it has once again gained popularity in the music world. Students will also be introduced to the basic steps on how to play the Native American flute. Bring your own instrument or student flutes will be available for purchase. This course will include a tour of the Booth Western Art Museum.

During the early days of May 1864, the Federal armies of Major General William T. Sherman entered Georgia, and began moving toward Atlanta. General Joseph E. Johnston and the Army of Tennessee attempted to thwart their advance, and a campaign of maneuver resulted. This course will cover the military action from the opening engagements near Tunnel Hill to the September fall of Atlanta. A tour of the Booth Museum will be included with the registration for this course.

The labyrinth, known to be at least 4,000 years old, has been used by many cultures, countries, and faiths around the world. It is a walking meditation on a spiral path leading to a central point, and then back out again. Like the spiral found in nature, such as the conch shell, the pine cone, or the rose blossom, the labyrinth is also a curving line around a central point, symbolizing movement, growth, change, and providing a continually shifting perspective that is inspiring and life-renewing. Walking a labyrinth is a metaphor for life â&#x20AC;&#x201C; the path shifts in unexpected ways, sometimes away from your goal, but ultimately leading to the center. It is a powerful meditation tool, helping to quiet the mind and allowing time for personal reflection. Learn about the labyrinth, walk a large canvas labyrinth, and center yourself in quietness and reflection in this class hosted by a Veriditas Trained and Certified Labyrinth Facilitator. This course includes a tour of the Booth Museum.

This course will cover the basic fundamentals of drawing in a fun and relaxed atmosphere. We will cover line drawing, composition, proportion, perspective, value and other basics. By the end of the course, students should be able to see and accurately replicate shapes and forms, use light and shadow for effect, and depict simple drawings suitable for display.

Intermediate students will study the paintings of watercolor masters. Instructor will provide some printed copies to use in class (or you can bring your own). We will discuss their style, techniques, composition and color palettes while painting one of their masterpieces. Instructor will demonstrate both a copy one week, then create a new painting from her sketches or photos the following class, using techniques learned from the master just studied. Students will then create their own studies and original paintings.

Gouache Painting

This second part of the classic film western course will pick up the history of the Western in 1962 with John Ford’s “The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance” and conclude with James Mangold’s 2007 remake of the original 1950’s classic “3:10 To Yuma.” Included in the course will be films by Sam Peckinpah (“The Wild Bunch”), Marlon Brando (“One Eyed Jacks”), Sergio Leone (“The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly”), and Clint Eastwood (“The Unforgiven”). The course will examine how the Western genre film has changed from the early work of John Ford and Howard Hawks to the more recent work of Clint Eastwood and Quentin Tarantino. Part 1 is not a prerequisite for Part 2.

HISTORY Bourbon 101: An Introduction to the only Truly American Spirit $49 09/18/2018 1 Session(s) Tue 1PM - 4PM Instructor(s): Steve Nudson

What is bourbon? What makes bourbon a uniquely American spirit? How is bourbon made? We will answer these and a lot more questions in this class. A short history of bourbon will start the course, including a quick review of the Whiskey Rebellion, the new United State’s government’s first domestic tax and the cause of its first rebellion in the 1790s. Did you know that bourbon is the only spirit specifically defined by law in the United States? The definition of bourbon will be covered in depth. We will learn how bourbon is made, where it is made, and what makes specific bourbons different. How do you read a bourbon label? The label will be decoded and terms explained so you know what you are buying. What to look for when tasting a bourbon will be covered. We will end the class with a discussion of the major distillers and a few of the special yearly editions. Bring your questions and let’s talk bourbon.

This course covers the plans, development and building of the 50 iron armored warships built for the Confederacy in which 22 saw active service. A sailor stationed aboard the CSS Georgia in 1864 called her a box, not a vessel, and said that conditions were so horrible, “She is not fit a command for a sergeant of Marines.” Likewise, the CSS Savannah was a “floating sieve,” a miserable place to live and work. Conditions on the Confederate ironclads in Savannah were so bad that men deserted to Union occupied Fort Pulaski. Yet three ironclads were constructed at Savannah in 1864. Only one saw action, the CSS Atlanta, and she only managed to fire several shots, then run aground and become captured. One example of a failed program of constructing iron warships that would never fight, and the few that did, fought against staggering odds.

The Early Years: US Involvement in Vietnam 1941-1961

It first began with the rescue of an American pilot by “Vietnamese partisans” and the leadeship of a diminutive man with several different names, later known as “Ho Chi Minh.” The support of the French in Vietnam

would draw the United States into an enigmatic conflict that would last nearly 30 years. Learn of the first U.S. army casualty, Major Peter Dewey in September 1945, whose name still does not appear on “The Wall.” Why does the date “1960” appear on the Vietnam Campaign medal? And why one of the earliest U.S. Army advisors exclaimed, “Where the hell is Saigon?” when he received orders to Vietnam. Learn the mysterious beginnings of American military buildup that was kept classified until after 1971. The ghost of a WWII military leadership that was drawn into a guerrilla war and much more will be studied closely in this course.

This course will study the book, “What’s In A Name?” written by Dale Hartsfield, the instructor. Hartsfield was the family spokesperson for the Hartsfield family when the City of Atlanta renamed the airport, Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport. The controversy surrounding the name change prompted the writing of this book. The class will cover the history of the great airport and the five official names since, the airport was built in 1925. You can tell the stories that show your pride in family, accomplishments and growth. This course is all about fun. We are not writing memoirs, we are not part of an art class.
