STORY BY JOZEE ESSER Online Editor Senior assassins is one of the many senior events that most underclassmen eagerly await to participate in. Assassins has been a tradition of the seniors since the past five or so years. Assassins is a water gun game that happens in the spring of each year. Students involved in the game are given a “target” they have to eliminate by shooting them with a water gun within the given amount of time in that round, which is usually around four days. If participants aren’t able to get their target in the amount of time given then they are eliminated. This year 84 students decided to join. Each student paid a $5 entry fee that would be placed into the winning pot for the winner of assassins to take home. The total amount in the winning pot this year was $420. A lot went on behind the scenes with Emily Brewer, the “Godfather” of the game, running the Instagram account and passing out targets. “I took on the role of godfather and was in charge of collecting money, sending out targets and keeping the instagram up to date along with settling disputes,” Brewer said.

|3

With that the game started on March. 21st, 2022. Many students were excited and even prepared before the games started. I shut off all my location on social media and l Life 360,” said Konner Wells. Many other students beside Wells did this, which to his advantage led him onto the final two in the game. During the school day anxiety and tension that was going through the senior class could be felt, with people wondering who would be the next eliminated target. I never really thought I would get out, but getting set up was probably my biggest worry.,” said Kaden Ireland. Assassins was a topic on a lot of students’ minds, with them conspiring about where their targets are and how to eliminate them. “Drew Baxter thought she escaped her fate but I snuck into the bed of Bryson Vawters truck and he got her to roll her window down for me,” said Wells With Kaden Ireland getting eliminated in the third round, that left the final round with Konner Wells and Jake Hilliard, instead of battling head to head the both came to terms with splitting the winning pot.

The Final 3

Kaden eliminated Taylor Tennpenny in round two, in this round Kaden was able to eliminate two others on top of getting his target Taylor.

Konner Wells

Konner eliminated his target Reagan Carter which punched his ticket into round three.

Jake Hilliard

In round one Jake was able to eliminate his first target Hannah Schafer

Senior Stats

SHS Seniors share overview of thier spring sports career

Kynlea Heydenreich Softball

Allison Rosenberger Soccer

Senior Kynlea Heydenreich has been playing softball for the school since her freshman year. Her mindset from freshman year hasn’t changed much, but knowing it is her last year makes her want to go all out. Over the years she has mainly improved on being more aggressive and defensive along with improving her overall skills. Heydenreich explains the toughest part of the sport is your mentality. She would like to thank coaches Brandon Durkes, Daniel Ruda and Jay Monhollon for always believing in her and pushing her to be her best.

Senior Allison Rosenberger has been playing soccer for SHS all four years of high school. Over the years she has improved by playing more aggressively and having a better mindset. This year Rosenberger is playing as hard as she can because it will be her last year of playing soccer. She explained that the toughest part of the sport is your mindset especially when you get down a couple of goals. She would like to thank her high school teachers Tim Nussbaum, Kyle Seevers, and Jenna Cunningham for believing in her and showing a different side to the game.

Emily Brewer Swim

Gavin Wilhelm Golf

Senior Emily Brewer has been a part of the SHS swim team since her freshman year. She explains that it has been such a fun experience because of all the team bonding they do and the group chants before every meet. Since Brewer’s freshman year, she has learned to not be as nervous and worried before events which has helped her tremendously as she is able to achieve new personal records. She really enjoys hanging out with the team and seeing how her teammates perform. Brewer would like to thank old coach, Ms. Lippe, who helped her with her techniques with the butterfly and the freestyle stroke.

Senior Gavin Wilhelm has participated in golf since his freshman year at SHS. His mindset has changed over the course of the four seasons by setting goals for himself and knowing what score he is capable of. He has also improved his skills and drives the ball so much better. The most challenging part of golf is sustaining a positive mindset the whole time while the most rewarding is seeing all of his work pay off. Wilhelm plans to continue his academic and athletic career at Washburn University. Wilhelm would like to thank instructor Davis Attleberry, SHS Coach Rineberg and his grandparents who all help him be a better athlete.

Maclane Finley Baseball

Emma Schultz Track

Senior Maclane Finley has been playing baseball at SHS since his freshman year. Since freshman year, he has learned to play loose and free while not tensing up when making little mistakes. He also has improved his skills and has been a better teammate so that he can be the best role model for younger players. The toughest part of baseball is staying mentally tough, especially when you get down on yourself, but having teammates that are there to pick you up makes it so much easier, explains Finley. He will be attending Kansas City Kansas Community College to further his academic and baseball career. He would like to thank all of his baseball coaches for making the team one big family because it makes the program that much more special.

Emma Schultz, a senior, has been a distance runner in track for SHS since her freshman year. As a freshman, she had no idea what she was doing and took it too seriously. Now, she has learned to have fun while putting in the work. Over the years, the toughest part about track are the tough workouts and pushing through the pain during a race, but the most rewarding part is seeing all the hard work pay off and seeing her teammates reach their goals. Shultz has signed a letter of intent to Truman State University to continue her cross country and track careers. She would like to thank all of the XC and track staff for all their support, especially Coach Brading, Wiens, and Stueve for always pushing her to be a better athlete and person.

Austin Harden Tennis

Manny Hernandez Track

Austin Harden, a senior, has been playing tennis for SHS since he was a freshman in high school. From freshman to senior year, he has learned to be more aggressive on the court while maintaining a nonaggressive mindset off the court. He explains that one of the toughest parts of tennis is serving because you need to be able to put spin on the ball in order to have better odds of winning the point. He plans to attend Kansas Wesleyan University where he will continue his academic and tennis career. He would like to thank Coach Robinson for bringing stability to Harden’s tennis career and his teammates for supporting him.

Senior Manny Hernandez has been throwing the javelin for SHS for three years. After tearing his ACL in football last fall, he is extremely nervous that he will tear it again when throwing the javelin. He frequently has to calm himself down before he throws so he doesn’t get worked up about all the things he gets nervous for. The toughest part about throwing, is having good technique and not overthinking about his form—especially his knee. Hernandez states that before he throws, he always has to chug a bottle of water and eat a bag of candy. He would like to thank his track coach, Hebert, for always having patience with him.

Trends Over

As the Class of 2022 entered their first year of high school, a multitude of trends were popping up, whether it be from TikTok or clothing. In 2019, the term “VSCO girl” came into play. A typical VSCO girl wore oversized t-shirts where the shorts couldn’t be seen, had scrunchies on their wrist, and carried a hydroflask. Along with this, another popular trend for girls was to wear various prints, such as leopard print, velvet, and camo. During this time guys were also starting to wear shorter shorts with fanny packs becoming the new way to carry items such as AirPods. Also, the E-girl and E-boy aestetic emerged from TikTok this year, which was defined with an emo concept. TikTok also posed another trend where people would eat ice cream off the shelves of grocery stores.

2020 When students returned for their sophomore year of high school they weren’t expectant of the pandemic that would take over the world, throwing a variety of trends to try out while quarantining at home. The overall trend of 2020 was to be comfortable, with comfy clothes like matching sweatshirts and sweatpants were a hot item swiping the nation. Air forces were also quite prevalent. Girls began to put beads in their hair and cut themselves bangs or shave their heads during the pandemic. Since many were binging shows like Tiger King, Outerbanks, Riverdale, and All-American, flaming hot Cheetos were a popular snack to sit down and relax with. Lastly, content creating became more popular while over on TikTok, the dance renegade became quite popular, starting the TikTok dance trends for the future.

the Years 2021 As students returned for hybrid-style learning, the year 2021 posed a 90’s vibe, with sweater vests gaining all the hype. As lockdowns reduced many returned to the gym to get fit. A popular food trend was to mix Chick-fil-a chicken nuggets, fries, and mac’n’cheese together, adding the famous Chick-fil-a sauce over the creation. Another trend that erupted at the end of the year was the devious licks trend, which was where students would steal items from their schools (this was quickly shut down).

FEATURE | 9

Over the year of 2022, the new trend for girls makeup is the, “no makeup makeup look” and the bubble braid hairstyle. Celsius’ became a popular drink, while Wordle took the world by storm, which is a game where people try to guess the word in as few tries as possible. Along with these, self-care and taking care of yourself continued to increase. Many people also started using face masks as a way to decompress from long days, and also used eye masks to help de-puff any eye bags. Lastly, many people started taking protein powder as well as dry scooping pre workout.

Vikes Graduating Into the Workforce Cameron Stanley Marines

Story By Alyssa Boos Editor in Chief

Once Cameron Stanley graduates, he will be spending a gap year to train and prepare himself for the military. After his year of training, Stanley will enlist in the Marines, where he feels like he can make the most difference. He decided to join the military because he wanted to serve his country. He is most nervous about having to leave his friends and family, but is most excited about putting his life on the line to make the world a better place.

Ruth Maciel

Aurora Dinneen

After graduation, Maciel will enter the army to serve in the National Guard. She decided on this passion because it keeps her in shape, she likes to shoot things, and the Guard provides college financial support. She’s most looking forward to seeing the growth in her mindset about life, as well as ranking up. However, she is scared about getting sent to WW3 because she can’t hurt someone. Overall, she says that joining the Guard and finishing basic training during high school has been one of her biggest accomplishments. She stated that she’s very proud of herself.

After she walks across the stage at the Expo and attains her diploma, Dinneen plans to continue to work after graduation and to move out of her house. Dinneen is most excited to finish school, however, she is most nervous about having to become an adult. The reason she decided to not attend college and instead chose to go into the workforce, is because her dream job doesn’t need any college education. Dinneen said she’s always wanted to work with animals and plans to work in an animal shelter.

STAY OUT OF THE BUSHES

Journalism Advisor, Amy Riley, Reisgns It’s Not Goodbye, It’s See You Later

I wanted to take a moment to say thank you for all of the memories I have made in USD 345, and with the Journalism program in particular. Next year I will start a new journey as the Journalism teacher at De Soto High School. While I know this is the right decision for the Riley family and I am excited about the new challenges in front of me, the thought of leaving this district has definitely had me in tears multiple times over the past few weeks. I am a product of this district. I have been a part of the community in some way since I was seven years old. Who I am as a person and as a teacher has been influenced in every way by the community, staff, and students in USD 345. When I initially came back in 2006 as a teacher, I was ecstatic to “come home.” The family that exists in this school and district is truly one of a kind and I have been honored and lucky to be a part of it for the better part of three decades. I don’t want to start listing names because I’m sure I will accidentally forget a few names, but so many of you are the people and teachers I aspire to be. Despite the fact that I am leaving, I know I will see you next year at events like Battle of the Bands, Homecoming, prom. Once a Viking, always a Viking. As you move into next year, keep supporting each other; have each others’ backs the way we always have. Stay out of the bushes. Make good decisions, and if you make bad ones, make sure they aren’t permanent. I will miss you all so much! Page Design by Alyssa Boos

Clipper are e s

Alyssa Boos

I first joined The Clipper staff half-way through my sophomore year. My intent was to expand my writing skills, but over the course of the next three years, I would Editor-In-Chief find my passion for journalism in Clipper class. Throughout my Clipper career, the moments that stick out are very special to me, with most of these moments coming from my senior year. I loved how the Clipper staff would ‘gossip’ together and laughter would erupt. The overall bond of the staff this year is what made me love it so much, that and the improvement we’ve all done. The best and most vibrant memory I have from Clipper was our first ideas meeting for Rumor Has It… I remember all the discussion and the passion in all the staffers eyes, and that’s when I realized that this was the staff that would push the Clipper to its best improvement, and they lived up to that! My favorite year I was involved in was this year because though it was full of a lot of hard work, dedication, and stress, I completed all my goals in improving the Clipper in every aspect and beginning to compete in KSPA contests. My advice to future staffers is get your online stories done and finish your print pages on time!!! Really, all the staff have something special in them - they’re all amazing and I couldn’t have had a better staff to work with I look forward to the day we can be a Pacemaker winner and have other schools create a meme closet about us. Overall, I’ll miss the flutter in my heart and the adlerline of picking up a story a day or minutes before the event, getting the photos, asking questions while recording on my phone, and compiling the story in a quick period. The best example of a story like this is my ‘Board Decides Fate of Name, Change, Passes Resolution’ story or ‘Students Wear Red, Protest School Name’ story. After graduation, I plan to study abroad in Germany for a gap year under the CBYX program, then in the fall of 2023 I will attend Wichita State University to major in journalism and minor in Creative Writing. I plan to become a photojournalist or on-the-scene reporter.

I first joined the clipper my junior year. I joined because I love Mrs. Riley and I really enjoyed being able to choose what I could write about and design layouts that would be published for the school. My favorite Clipper memory is having our gossip sessions and being super close with all the staffers. We are like a little family. My favorite year in clipper is this year, mostly because last year was COVID and it was super stressful being online. After high school, at least as of right now, I plan on attending a community college to complete my gen eds and figure out my career path, and then continue onto a University to further my education. My advice to future Clipper staffers is to stay on top of your stories and layouts. It is always stressful to have to cram things in at the last minute and then have to send it in to be printed on the same day. It is much more worth it to put in some time outside of school and get it finished. I think I will miss our crazy class the most. These people always made my days better.

I first joined Clipper my junior year and I have been on staff for two years. My favorite memory from clipper would be all the stories from Mrs. Riley and all of the relationships that I have made in this class. My favorite year on staff has definitely been my senior year because I feel like my writing and layouts overall have grown so much since my first year on staff. I plan on attending the University of Kansas next year to major in sports broadcasting. I am going to miss all the funny moments and all of the clipper staff next year and my talks with Mrs. Riley. My advice for the clipper staff next year is have fun and enjoy it! You guys are going to do great things and definitely let KSPA know who we are!! ;)
