Sex and the Sea is a collage of blurred sensual photographic negatives. Born from a lost roll of film shot over 3 years ago, this series is a mediation on guttural haunt and erotic spirit—our innate tendencies toward want and loss. Delving into what analog and emotion captures, what digital and analysis misses. Though there were no actual people around the sea while the photographs were shot, these images somehow captured dark figures of the recent past who found final refuge in dancing along the Oregon Coast sending a hope filled caress into the landscape. This is an act of embracing the war that can occur at the meeting place of freedom and man-made control.

SAMANTHA BRODY STU DIO ART
This summer (2013) at the Taos Farmer’s market I sold locally-made mustard and mushrooms that were foraged from the mountains. Plastic bags suffocate mushrooms. I’d package them in brown paper bags, which I have always loved to use as a canvas. Organic forms of growth are largely my inspiration so drawing at the market was a wonderful setting. The Morrell mushrooms captivated me with their crooked cavities and the chanterelle mushrooms made my eyes pop with their orange delicious curves. It is magical how mushrooms grow up out of nowhere, without and seed, but a spore that can live in space. This series of drawings were developed over several months of working at the farmer’s market.
