pitelet käsissäsi kirjaa, joka kertoo monipuolisesti Raumasta ja raumalaisista. Kaupungin kauneus ja ilmapiiri täytyy kokea aivan itse, aistia kaikilla aisteilla. Rauman 600-vuotinen historia elää yhä kaupungin kaduilla, narahtelee puisissa portinpielissä, nitisee satamaan kiinnitettyjen alusten kyljissä ja heijastuu aavan meren tyrskyistä.

What you hold in your hands is a book that tells you a manifold story about Rauma and its people. The beauty and atmosphere of the city simply have to be experienced first-hand, they have to be taken in with all the human senses. Almost six centuries of history live and breathe on the streets of Rauma. You can hear it in the creaks of wooden gates, in the groans of the sides of old boats in the harbor, you can see it reflected on the surfs of the sea.

Kirjan runsas kuvitus kertoo Rauman tarinan: viivähtää keskustan sykkeessä, vanhan kaupungin idyllissä ja saariston luonnonrauhassa. Kirjaan mahtui vain pieni osa niistä tuhansista kuvista, joita otin kirjaa varten. Pysähdy siis hetkeksi, kulje rauhassa halki keskiaikaisen kaupungin ja löydä sen monimuotoinen kauneus! Tämän kukoistavan pikkukaupungin elämänmenoon on helppo rakastua.

The pictures in this book are numerous, but they are only a fraction of the thousands I took; there is more to Rauma that can fit in any one book. So please, take a while to wander through this medieval city and revel in its diverse beauty! It is easy to fall in love with this flourishing small city and its unique way of life.

Kaupungin näkötornista pohjoisen suuntaan katsellessa huomaa, että Rauma on hyvin vanha ja arvokas kaupunki. Samalla nykyaika elää kiinteästi sen ympärillä. Keskiaikainen Pyhän Ristin kirkko valvoo yhä vanhan kaupunginosan elämänmenoa.

When looking north from the city’s observation tower one can instantly see that Rauma is a city of age and prestige. Yet, modern times are strongly present in its everyday life. The medieval Church of the Holy Cross watches over the older neighborhoods.

Keskiaikainen Rauman kaupunki sijaitsee länsirannikolla Satakunnan ja Varsinais-Suomen leikkauspisteessä. Matkaa Turkuun kertyy vajaat sata kilometriä ja lähimpään naapurikaupunkiin Poriin viisikymmentä.

The medieval city of Rauma is situated on the Western Coast of Finland at the meeting point of the regions of Satakunta and Southwest Finland. The distance to Turku, a major center, is less than one hundred kilometers and the closest neighboring city of Pori is fifty kilometers away.

Raumaa kuuluu usein kutsuttavan Meren lapseksi, ja parempaa lempinimeä onkin vaikea kuvitella. Kaupunki on syntymästään saakka, vuodesta 1442, katsonut merelle. Se kohosi aikoinaan kallioiden suojaamalle laituripaikalle, ja satama on jatkuvasti yksi sen asukkaiden merkittävimmistä elatuksen antajista. Meri tuo raumalaiselle leivän. Meren äärelle nousi aikanaan myös kaupungin suurteollisuus. Tavalla tai toisella sen nykyisetkin elinkeinot ja tuotteet kulkevat oman sataman kautta vieraille maille. Kaikki tarvittavat palvelut ovat lähellä eli aina ei tarvitse lähteä matkaan autolla. Kävellen tai polkupyörällä ehtii mainiosti. Kevyenliikenteen reittejä on runsaasti.

Rauma has often been called the Child of the Sea and no other name could be more fitting. Since its foundation in 1442, the city has overlooked the sea. It rose around a pier protected by rocks and the harbor has always been one of the most significant sources of livelihood in the city. The sea provides for the citizens of Rauma. The city’s large-scale industry was also founded on the sea coast. In one way or another, the modern industry and all the produced goods move through the harbor on their way to foreign destinations. The sea also dictates the climate of the area. Winters are temperate and in the summertime the hot weather tends to linger within the inland parts of Rauma. There is usually no snow for Christmas and winter sports can only really begin in February. With 40 000 inhabitants Rauma is a sizable city. All services are close by which means one does not necessarily need to use a car at all. Walking and biking are perfectly viable options and will get you to your destination in time. There are also numerous bridle paths in the city.

Rauma is a dynamic and robust harbor city and industrial center. The new and the old city centers form a functional whole that has received much recognition and accolade.

Länsirannikolla maankuori nousee merestä keskimäärin 50 senttimetriä vuosisadassa. Kaupunki on siis laajentunut kohti rantaviivaa, meren asuttavaksi ja rakennettavaksi luovuttamalle alueelle.

On the western shore the earth rises from the sea at a rate of approximately 50 centimeters a century, meaning that the city ever expands towards the coastline conceded by the sea.

There was a time when it became necessary to connect the Rauma commercial center to the sea with a functional thoroughfare and transportation route. The Rauma canal brings an air of Central Europe to the city. The canal once helped shape the city center and now it stands as a reminder of the past and acts as a centerpiece for the Rauma milieu.

Rauman

Musiikkia ja kulttuuria Rauman kulttuuritarjonta on runsasta ja monipuolista. Kulttuurielämä painottuu voimakkaasti kesäkuukausiin. Rauma Blues on alan harrastajien joukossa legendaarinen käsite, ja Sinisen Meren Elokuvajuhlat, Blue Sea Film Festival, kasvattaa vuosi vuodelta suosiotaan. Klustermus on luovan ja esittävän säveltaiteen, ensisijaisesti vaihtoehtoisen underground-musiikin, vuotuinen ulkoilmatapahtuma. Se kerää vuosittain ison joukon nuoria ystäviä Syväraumanlahden rannalle alkukesän juhlaansa.

Music and Culture Rauma’s cultural offerings are vast and wide-ranging. The cultural life is at its peak during the summer months. Rauma Blues, a legendary concept among blues connoisseurs, and the Blue Sea Film Festival increase their popularity year by year. Klustermus is an annual outdoor event for creative and representative musical arts with a special focus on alternative and underground music. Every year a throng of young people flock the shores of Syväraumanlahti bay for this early summer celebration.

Pitsi on perinne Pitsiviikko on heinäkuussa vietettävä raumalaisen käsityötaidon nimikkotapahtuma. Parin vuosisadan takaisessa vähäväkisessä ja köyhässä kaupungissa pitsinnypläys oli monille raumalaisille elinehto, ja niinpä tämän taidon hallitsivat niin miehet kuin naisetkin. Meidän päivinämme nypläys on yhä suosittu harrastus. Sitä opiskellaan muun muassa kansalaisopistossa, ja sen vaikutus on näkyvillä monissa kulttuurin muodoissa. Tanssiryhmä Mirku Flika esittää perinteisellä pitsiviikolla kuvioesityksen Pitsitanssi. Nyplääjäpatsas muistuttaa nykypäivän katsojia siitä, miten ”Siin mennä viärest ääre ja äärest viäre eiväk stää kaikk taulpääp pyst tekemänkä”. Aito Raumanpitsi on haluttu lahjatuote ympäri vuoden. Pitsi on arvokas muisto niin jouluna kuin keväällä koulunsa päättäville nuorille.

Lace is a Tradition Held each July, Lace Week is an event dedicated to celebrating the handicraft skills of Rauma citizens. A few centuries ago, in this scarcely populated and poor city, lace-making was a vital necessity and women and men alike possessed the skill. Today lace-making is a popular hobby. It can be studied at the community college and the effects of lace and lace-making are clearly visible in many forms of culture. The traditional folk dance Pitsitanssi (Lace Dance) by dance group Mirku Flika is a traditional Lace Week performance. The Lace-maker Statue reminds modern onlookers of the old Rauma proverb: “It goes under from over ‘n’ over from under ‘n’ not all knuckleheads can do it.” Authentic Rauma lace is a desired gift that suits all seasons. It is both a favorite Christmas present and a precious token for young adults finishing school in the spring.

Vanha Rauma Rauma on yksi Suomen keskiaikaisista kaupungeista. Iältään se on maan kolmanneksi vanhin. Perustamisajankohdaksi mainitaan kuningas Kaarle Knuutinpojan privilegiokirjeessä vuosi 1442. Vuosisatojen kuluessa Vanhan Rauman ainutlaatuisuus ja arvo on ymmärretty. Nykyisin Vanha Rauma kuuluu Unescon maailmanperintöluetteloon, ja se on kaikkien kaupunkilaisten silmäterä. Suuri osa alueen rakennuksista on suojeltuja. Alueella on noin 600 taloa, ja siellä asuu noin 800 kaupunkilaista.

Old Rauma Rauma is one of Finland’s medieval cities. It is the third oldest in the country. In the letter of privilege from knight Karl Knutsson Bonde the founding year was established as 1442. Over the course of centuries the value and unique nature of the historic Old Rauma has been understood. Today, Old Rauma is on the UNESCO World Heritage List and it is a prize held in high esteem by all Rauma citizens. The majority of the historic area’s buildings are protected and conserved. There are approximately 600 houses and 800 inhabitants in the area.

Church of the Holy Cross

Fransiskaanimunkkien rakennuttama Pyhän Ristin kirkko on jo 500 vuotta vanha.

The Church of the Holy Cross (Pyhän Ristin kirkko) was built by Franciscan monks 500 years ago. The first thing to catch the tourist’s eye is the youngest part of the church: the tower. Its purpose was to serve as a kind of lighthouse for seafarers as it was visible from far away at the Rauma sea; a pure, white and shining landmark guiding ships home. We can only imagine what went through the mind of the seafarer who after years of being at sea saw the tower that heralded the approaching shores of the city of his birth.

Turisti kiinnittää ensimmäiseksi huomionsa kirkon nuorimpaan osaan, tornirakennelmaan. Sen tarkoitus oli palvella merenkulkijoita, sillä se näkyi kauas Raumanmerelle kirkkaan valkoisena, hohtavana maamerkkinä. Voimme vain kuvitella, mitä liikkui merimiehen mielessä, kun hän pari vuotta kestäneen pestinsä jälkeen näki tornin ulapalta synnyinkaupunkinsa rantoja lähestyessään. Kirkon arvokkainta irtaimistoa edustaa votiivitaulu, jonka taustalla lienee vanhin säilynyt kuva kaupungista. Taide-elämyksen tarjoavat nykypäivänkin vaativalle katsojalle katolisen kauden taidonnäytteet, Kristuksen kärsimystarinaa kuvaavat kattomaalaukset. Nykytaidetta puolestaan edustaa Kerttu Horilan naishahmo.

One of the most valuable items in the church is a votive painting portraying perhaps the oldest recorded view of the city of Rauma. Other works of art sure to elicit a jubilant response from even the most demanding art appreciator come from the Catholic era; the roof paintings telling the story of Christ’s suffering. The female figure by Kerttu Horila represents a touch of contemporary art in the church’s art collection.

Tornit tienviittoina Yksi nyrkkisääntö kannattaa Vanhassa Raumassa kulkevan muistaa. Paina mieleesi kolme tornia, niin tiedät, missä milloinkin olet, vaikka mukulakivillä tasapainoillessa muuten eksyisitkin suunnasta. Kirkon ja Vanhan Raatihuoneen tornit ovat usein yhtaikaa näkyvillä, ja vanha VPK:n talon huippu on kolmas tärkeä maamerkki.

Towers Mark the Land There is one rule one should know when wandering in Old Rauma: Keep sight of the three towers. If you see at least one of the three towers, you won’t feel lost among the cobblestone streets. The towers of the church and the old town hall are visible simultaneously. The third landmark is the firehouse’s peak.

A City to Suit Its People

Rakentaminen on jo pitkään ollut vilkasta. Keskustaa ympäröi uusien kerrostalojen vyöhyke, ja pientaloalueita nousee kaupungin laitamille jatkuvasti. Tontit ovatkin erittäin kysyttyjä, eikä niitä koskaan tunnu olevan riittävästi.

Construction has been lively for quite some time in the city of Rauma. The city center is surrounded by a zone of new apartment buildings and detached housing areas are being developed in the suburbs. Plots are very much in demand and there never seems to be enough available. The city center has been protected from the noise and dangers of traffic. Parks and other child-friendly zones are delightfully spacious.

Ydinkeskusta on rauhoitettu liikenteen melulta ja vaaroilta. Puistoille ja muille lapsiystävällisille vyöhykkeille on jätetty ilahduttavasti tilaa.

Sammallahdenmäki Unescon maailmanperintökohde Sammallahdenmäki on pronssikautinen (1500–500 eaa.) hautaröykkiö, jonka näyttävin osa on kuvassa näkyvä Kirkonlaattia. Pakanuuden aikana kylän mahtavimmat haudattiin korkealle, meren rannalle. Epäilemättä nämä kaukaiset esi-isämme halusivat viimeisen leposijansa paikalta, jossa aurinko ja meri ovat lähellä.

Sammallahdenmäki Sammallahdenmäki, the UNESCO world heritage site, dates back to the Bronze Age (1500-500 B.C.). It is a cluster of burial cairns. The most impressive part is the so called Church Floor shown in the picture. During pagan times the most prominent people in the village had to be buried somewhere high up and by the sea. Without a doubt, these distant ancestors of ours wanted their final resting place to be where the sun and the sea were near.

Selkämeren kansallispuisto Selkämeren kansallispuisto on Suomen 37. kansallispuisto ja on maamme suurimpia Itämeren suojelualueita. Se esittelee ulointa saaristoa Merikarvialta Kustavin edustalle. Rauman kohdalla myös metsäiset saaristot, lehdot ja perinnemaisemat kuuluvat alueeseen. Kansallispuiston tarkoituksena on suojella varsinaisia vesialueita ja meren pohjaa. Suojelualueesta 98% on vedenpinnan alapuolella, jonka vuoksi tämän kansallispuiston merkitys vedenalaisen luonnon suojelussa on siten erityisen suuri.

Bothnian Sea National Park Bothnian Sea National Park is Finland’s 37th national park and is our country’s biggest conservational area in the Baltic Sea. It spans from the outer islands of Merikarvia to the shores of Kustavi. The park also entails the forested islands, groves and traditional landscapes in and around Rauma. The purpose of the national park is to protect the local water areas and sea bed. 98 % of the protected area is under water, so this national park is crucial for the protection effort of the submarine nature.

Reksaari

Kaupungin suosituimpia saaristokohteita on erityisesti lapsiperheiden suosima Reksaari. Reksaaren eli Rekisaaren nimi kumpuaa historian alkuhämäristä, jolloin kauppamiehet ja metsästäjät saapuivat talvisaikaan reellä näille seuduille kalaa ja turkiksia vaihtamaan.

The city’s most popular island attraction is, of course, the one especially popular among families; Reksaari, or Sleigh Island. The name originates from the early era of tradesmen and hunters and it was the place where they met during wintertime to trade fishes and furs.

Saarelle kuljetaan veneillä ja vesibussilla. Moni yöpyy saarella telttaillen tai vuokraamalla mökin pidemmäksi ajaksi.

Visitors get to the island by boats and waterbuses. Some spend a night in a tent, others rent a cabin for a longer period of time.

Future Experts

Ilman nykyaikaista koulutusta ei ole menestyvää kaupunkia. Rauma onkin vilkas koulutuskaupunki ja varsinkin merenkulkualalla on pitkät perinteet. Merikoulu perustettiin keisarillisen majesteetin armollisella julistuksella vuonna 1880. Nykyään Satakunnan ammattikorkeakoulun Tekniikan ja merenkulun yksiköstä valmistuu merikapteeneja ja merenkulkualan insinöörejä.

A city cannot be successful without modern education. Rauma is a busy school city and education in seafaring is an especially cherished tradition. The Maritime School was founded by the Imperial Majesty’s gracious declaration in 1880. Today the school is known as the Department of Technology and Maritime Management and it is a part of the Satakunta University of Applied Sciences. The graduates are sea captains and maritime engineers.

Raumalla sijaitsevat Satakunnan ammattikorkeakoulun Tekniikan ja merenkulun, Liiketoiminnan sekä Sosiaali- ja terveysalan kampukset. Ammatillisesta oppilaitoksesta, Länsirannikon Koulutus Oy WinNovasta valmistuvat laivasähköasentajat, korjaajat, vahtikonemestarit ja vahtiperämiehet. Lisäksi WinNovassa on tarjolla laaja valikoima alan näyttötutkintoja. WinNovan koulutustarjontaan Raumalla kuuluvat tekniikan ja liikenteen alan, sosiaali- ja terveysalan, matkailu-, ravitsemus- ja talousalan, liiketalouden ja kaupan sekä tietojenkäsittelyn opinnot nuorille ja aikuisille. Lisäksi raumalaiset voivat olla ylpeitä siitä, että kaupungissa on Turun yliopiston opettajankoulutuslaitos, Rauman yksikkö, sekä Merenkulkualan koulutus- ja tutkimuskeskus (MKK).

The Satakunta University of Applied Sciences has a strong presence in the city: the Technology and Maritime Management campus is situated in Rauma, as are the campuses of Business and Culture and Social Services and Health Care. The WinNova Länsirannikon Koulutus Oy Ltd. vocational school trains ship electricians, repairers and naval officers. WinNova also offers a wide range of competence-based qualification certificates. WinNova offers education in technology and traffic services, health care and social services, tourism, nutrition sciences, commerce and business and trade. They also provide IT education for both young and adult students. Rauma citizens can also be proud of hosting two departments of the University of Turku: the Centre for Maritime Studies (CMS) and the Rauma Unit of the Department of Teacher Education.

Meriteollisuus Laivanrakennuksella on kaupungissa satojen vuosien taakse kurottuvat perinteet. Nykyisin STX Finlandin Rauman telakka rakentaa niin suurten valtamerten risteilijäjättiläisiä kuin huipputeknologiaa vaativia erikoisaluksiakin. Rolls Royce Oy Ab puolestaan keskittyy valmistamaan kansainvälisille markkinoille potkurilaitteita sekä suunnittelemaan ankkurointi-, kiinnitys- ja hinausvintturijärjestelmiä.

The Maritime Cluster The tradition of naval construction in Rauma dates back centuries. Currently the Rauma docks of STX Finland are building luxury ocean liners as well as high-tech ships for special purposes. Rolls-Royce Ltd. focuses on producing propeller products for international markets and developing and designing anchoring, fastening and warping winch systems.

Satama Uudet tavat ja vaikutteet tulevat Raumalle suoraan valtamerten takaa. Samaten moni paljasjalkainen raumalainen on jossain elämänsä vaiheessa halunnut lähteä kaukomaille. Todellinen raumalaisuus onkin kansainvälisyyttä ja kosmopoliittisuutta.

Harbor New ways and influences flood Rauma from oceans afar. Likewise, every true Rauma citizen has always had the itch to travel somewhere far. Being a true Rauma inhabitant means internationality, a true Rauma inhabitant is a cosmopolite.
