‘Welcome Home’

‘Welcome Home’ is something that has been said to me several times over the first few days of my return to Newburgh and it means so much to have been made so very welcome by the members after a period of around 8 years. Thank you.

My first spell attached to the Club was predominately in a coaching role, assisting with the delivery of the Clubgolf junior programme as well as providing both group and individual lessons for members and visitors to the Club.

I look forward to building up a tuition business again for all categories of players, and this will be an important part of my new role as ‘Director of Golf’.

Despite the fancy job title my role at Newburgh is to simply supervise and oversee all golf operations at the Club which I know is easier said than done. This will include the creation

and running of a well-stocked Pro Shop which will carry many of the major golfing brands. The shop will become the first point of contact for golfers arriving at the Club and we will strive to make this first contact welcoming, friendly and professional at all times. As the saying goes you only get one chance to make a first impression and we want to continue and enhance the friendly reputation that the Club already has. The indoor simulator will be up and running as soon as possible and, in addition to being able to provide indoor lessons when required, we will also have the ability to carry out golf club custom fitting for major brands. Ping and Titleist have already agreed to be part of our new setup and we are currently looking at a third option also.

Kenny keeps you up to date with what OGV are doing behind the scenes

I have been a Ping authorised club fitter for around 25 years and have full confidence in all of their products. Titleist have also agreed to provide us with new hire sets and this will help to improve our offering to visiting golfers.

I am very much looking forward to working closely with Course Manager Matty as I settle into the role. Matty and his small but hardworking team have done a terrific job with the golf course in a short period of time, working in some awful weather conditions over the winter, and we are both excited about the possibilities that exist to improve the playing experience in the years ahead.

My first week in the job has been spent mainly in the Club Office, learning about how the Club works in the background and generally getting a ‘feel’ for the Club again. It is blatantly obvious that Lynda and Heather have done a fantastic job in the office over the last few months keeping the admin side of the business ticking over and they are due a huge thanks from all of us for their efforts.

Finally, I’d like to thank Kenny Dooley from OGV Energy for bringing me back to Newburgh. His infectious enthusiasm, vision and long term plans for the Club made it a very easy decision for me to ‘Come Home’. X

APRIL 2024 free to all members

One of the significant updates has been the completion of bunker renovations at the 6th hole.

Matty’s Monthly Update...

As the spring season beckons, the Newburgh Golf Club is buzzing with excitement and anticipation. With a dedicated focus on continual improvement, the club has been diligently working on various upgrades and enhancements to elevate the overall experience for its members and visitors alike.

Additionally, efforts have been made to patch up the 11th bunker, albeit delayed due to adverse weather conditions over the winter period. Despite this setback, the club remains resolute in its commitment to ensuring every aspect of the course meets the highest standards. Plans are underway to top up bunkers lacking sand in the coming weeks, ensuring they are in optimal condition for the season ahead.

In line with the club’s vision for continuous improvement, construction work is set to commence with Alan Scott Construction. Over the next two weeks, the team will be setting up a top dressing area, a move projected to result in substantial cost savings for the club annually. Areas around the greenside at the 18th hole and between the 1st and 7th holes are earmarked for tidying up, further enhancing the course’s visual appeal.

A pivotal aspect of maintaining a top-tier golf course is the condition of its greens. In collaboration with Robert Paterson of Grassman Turf Solutions, the club has conducted comprehensive testing on its greens for the first time in two years. Encouragingly, the results have been positive, although there is still work to be done, particularly in the top 15mm beneath the surface. This deeper analysis not only highlights areas for improvement but also underscores the club’s commitment to excellence in course maintenance. Recognizing the significance of greens in shaping the overall golfing experience, the club is poised to implement targeted strategies to address any deficiencies identified. Aeration, top dressing, and targeted nutrition will be key in achieving the desired outcomes, ensuring the greens are in pristine condition throughout the season.

2 Green is the word!

Nutritional management has been a cornerstone of the club’s maintenance strategy, with a focus on enhancing turf health and resilience. Applications of high iron content on the fairways have proven effective in reducing moss and fortifying the turf after the rigors of winter. Additionally, granular feeds have been applied to the greens, tees, and approaches, providing essential nutrients for better growth and optimal playing conditions.

(See page 6 for the full results.)

As the club gears up for the busy season ahead, attention has turned to the maintenance of equipment and machinery. Winter maintenance processes, including servicing and sharpening, are currently underway to ensure all machines are in peak condition, ready to meet the demands of the upcoming season. This meticulous upkeep is essential for the efficient operation of the golf course. Well-maintained equipment not only enhances productivity but also contributes to the overall quality of course management. Moreover, timely equipment maintenance helps prevent breakdowns during peak periods, minimizing disruptions to play and ensuring a seamless experience for golfers. By prioritizing equipment maintenance, the club demonstrates its commitment to providing a superior golfing environment and upholding its reputation as a premier destination for golf enthusiasts.

Aeration and top dressing remain integral components of the club’s maintenance plans, aimed at alleviating compaction and promoting healthy turf growth. Chris Pearson Aeration will be utilizing advanced technology with the Air2G2 machine to achieve optimal results with minimal disruption to playability.

In addition to course improvements, the club has embarked on initiatives to enhance pathways and patch fairways. These types of enhancements often go under the radar, but it ensures smoother navigation for players and staff, reducing the risk of accidents and minimizing disruptions to play. Patching fairways maintains the aesthetic appeal of the course, providing golfers with a more enjoyable and visually pleasing experience.

The greenkeeping team would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to members and supporters for their unwavering support and

encouragement. Their dedication inspires the team to strive for excellence, driving the club towards its goal of becoming a premier destination in the North East.

As the new season unfolds, Newburgh Golf Club invites everyone to witness the progress and enjoy the top-of-the-range experience it has to offer. With a shared vision of excellence and a commitment to continual improvement, the club looks forward to delivering an exceptional golfing experience for all. Here’s to a successful season ahead, filled with memorable moments on and off the course. X

WHS Handicap System

The new handicap system became live on Monday 1st April (any significance in the date?)

On the previous Saturday I played off 9 handicap, by Monday morning I’d suddenly found my golf had improved so much, under the new WHS calculation, I was now a 6 Handicap golfer (Yellow Tees). The start of major improvement in my golf??? I wish it was true, by the 8th hole my handicap had long disappeared … and continued to do so as we played on.

I take 2 things from my experience it’s going to take a bit of time to get used to the new system and having different handicaps for yellow and white tees. Make no mistake my handicap would have still increased using last year’s WHS calculations BUT instead of being 14 over par I would have been 11 over bad but maybe not quite as bad? It’s going to take a bit of time to get used to it.

The second thing isn’t new, some years ago Dave Philip advised me that if I wanted to get my handicap cut “play at the weekend, off the white tees” Handicap systems have change but the advise remains true for gents competitions

Always remember “the WHS has created a handicapping method that is adaptable, easy to use and enables players of all abilities to play and compete on a fair and equal basis.” ... and everything will be fine. X

EGM 27th March Report

Following the EGM on the 27th March members adopted an amended Constitution. The new constitution provides a framework which will enable the club to look to the future and enable us to develop and build on the work that is already well underway.

Election of Captain and Committee

The following members were proposed and elected 

Club Captain: Brian Thomson

Committee: Sam Boyle, Shelley Johnstone, Grant Leslie, Graham Lowe, Heather Marr, Paul Marshall, and Ron Wilson

It was agreed the committee would identify members to undertake specific roles and responsibilities.

Members will be updated in the near future. I am looking forward to working with the committee and NOYG Ltd to develop and build our club. X

Dougie’s Duster

On Friday our new Air Compressor “Dougie’s Duster arrived and was christened by a well “kent” face.

Bobby Managed to fit in 9 holes, just so he could “dust off” his shoes and trolley. Thanks to everyone who made this possible. The finishing touches will be added in the near future. The fundraising for the compressor resulted in surplus of funds. As indicated previously a new account was opened which will support the development of the club and course, through members fundraising. X

Winter Sunday Stableford League

Well the winter League is now complete, no last minute surprises with Graeme Watson the runaway winner although it was closer for the top 10 places.

Congratulations to Graeme who was consistent throughout the competition, scoring in all rounds.

ver the last few months everyone from volunteers, committee, groundskeepers, golf club and OGV staff have been working non stop to ensure the club is in the best place it can be for the start of the season.

I know we have a lot still to do, however reflecting back over the winter months I am happy with the progression made both on the course and in the clubhouse. We have a great spine to the club now with Robbie onboard, supported by Matty, Brian, Robbie and Courtney, this should hopefully allow Lynda and Heather a bit more time to play some golf or just relax.

The introduction of Gidi Grill will again improve the food offering and service in the club, along with new visitors and additional revenue to the club. I am asking for all the support we can give to Gidi as this generates money and positive reviews for the club that will allow us to improve the course, introduce more staff or make additional improvements to the club house.

The new club shop should be open by the 25th of April however I am sure Robbie can assist with anything in the meantime.

Lastly could I ask that you could give the club a positive review on TripAdvisor as this will again help the club to generate more visitors moving forward and improve our overall ranking online. A big thank you to those members who have already taken the time to do so.

Thank you all as ever for your continued support and we look forward to welcoming you all very soon!

Kenny

Excellent course in beautiful surroundings.

Played as a visitor and was given a warm welcome by all the staff in the clubhouse. Had dinner after my round in the clubhouse which was absolutely delicious. Would thoroughly recommend a visit to anyone visiting the area.

Great golf at Newburgh on Ythan Golf Club

Played at Newburgh in the Leyton Open on 31st March. Helped by a lovely sunny day the course was great. The greens were really excellent considering the time of year and previous weather conditions. The fairways also in good nick and every hole different. The views were lovely over the Ythan estuary and Reserve. Well worth playing
