Katy Christian Magazine would like to wish our readers a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! As many of you know, Christmas has been under assault for years by the “Away with the Manger” campaign. Many local, city, state, and federal government locations can no longer display Nativity scenes due to the Separation of Church and State. This principle, however, has been widely misconstrued in recent years. As originally ruled by the Supreme Court, Separation of Church and State was never intended to keep the church out of government affairs, but to keep the government out of the church. Christ is the true meaning of Christmas. It was because of His birth (and later, death and resurrection) that we, as sinners, could be redeemed to God through Christ, His Son. I love the bumper stickers that I see on cars that say, “Jesus is the Reason for the Season” and “Keep Christ in Christmas.” Good thing Christ wasn’t born today. I mean, after all, Mary was a single, pregnant teen. She would have certainly had a lot of pressure not to have the baby! Many of you are reading Katy Christian Magazine for the first time. Our magazine has been a free pick up publication since its inception in the fall of 2005 at over 700 locations. We have now decided to become a direct-mail magazine to over 23,000 homes in the Katy area. We will be alternating homes each publication so you will receive this magazine (if you are reading this letter today) several times a year. With this new direct-mail approach, we hope to spread our loving message to an even larger audience. Our mission is to promote Christian and family values. We are dependent on our wonderful advertisers to accomplish this task. We encourage you, as our readers, to support them whenever possible. Please take a minute to drop by and let them know that you saw their ad in our magazine, and that you appreciate their support! If you are looking for a great Christian school for your kids, this issue features our annual Christian School Directory. We have taken the time to list many of the Christian schools in our community so that you can make an informed decision as to where your children should attend. Once again, Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! Joseph R. Menslage President/Publisher Katy Christian Magazine joseph@houstonchristianmagazine.com

Local Roofer Helps Customers With More than Home Repairs By Jessa McClure James DeHart and his wife have just finished putting their two small children to bed for the night when a text message interrupts the silence. It’s from one of DeHart’s customers and he says his roof is leaking. For the roofing and home repair expert, this is disappointing. He immediately grabs his tools and heads towards his customer’s home. As he drives an hour towards Pasadena where his client lives, a thunderstorm dumps a blinding rain in his path. “The storm was so bad that the GPS on my phone wasn’t even working,” DeHart said. “I got there and got up on the roof in the rain to put a tarp on that section of the roof.” The contractor has a dozen of these stories, where he put his client’s comfort in front of his own. “Every single client of mine will contest that not everything goes 100 percent as planned, but JD is always there if things don’t.” DeHart began his career in the roofing and home repair business as a subcontractor when he was just 15-years-old. He struggled in

Baseball Legend Nolan Ryan Says... “When we replaced our windows with the Simonton windows, they blended with the house really well. We like the insulating factor that we get, especially in Texas, with the heat we have in the summertime and the drop in temperature that we get in the winter. The windows we had previously didn’t hold up well and didn’t do the job that we wanted from an insulating factor. Ruth chose the color, and we were really pleased with the way they turned out because we had a darker window before.”

school and found he had a natural ability when it came to construction. “I worked my way up and became a sales contractor,” he said. “I did that for a few years and then in 2008 when Hurricane Ike hit I began selling roofs.” He found a mentor in another roofer, who began showing him the ropes of the roofing and home repair business. DeHart began taking on his own clients and helping with other contractors’ customers. After six years, he decided he wanted to strike out on his own and start his own business.

“I moved back to the Katy area and started my own company,” DeHart said. “I started with only $500.” As he built his clientele, he realized that what set him apart was the fact that he genuinely cared about his customers past the initial sale and installation. He wanted them to have a safe and secure home and think of him as more of a friend than a contractor. “I feel like so much of my job—which is probably why I like it so much—is helping people,” he said. DeHart sees a need and helps to fill it, even when it has nothing to do with roofing. “If I have a client who’s on a fixed income, I might do more for

them than just fix their roof,” he said. “If they say, my car doesn’t work very well, I’ll take a look at their car and try to fix it if it’s a quick repair.” He has even been known to take unusual payments for his roofing and home repairs. “I had a client say, ‘I have a smoker that I don’t use anymore, would you take a smoker?’” Although his business practices might seem out-of-the-ordinary, DeHart said he is just following what God puts on his heart. “My faith is everything, and I couldn’t be a strong person and business owner if it wasn’t for him.” He said God is his backbone, followed closely by his wife, who helps keep the business running smoothly. “It takes a really strong person at home taking care of the kids and the house in order to support someone like me,” he said. “I sometimes work 90 to 100 hours a week. I wouldn’t be able to go like I do if it wasn’t for my wife.” Along with providing support for her husband, DeHart’s wife also keeps up with the businesses paperwork and billing. “I have her backing me up on the road so I can do my job taking care of the customers,” he said. The “mom and pop” feel of DeHart’s business is what he believes sets him apart from large corporate roofing and home repair businesses. “For large companies, their first priority is new customers, which means it could be weeks before current customers get much-needed repair work done,” he said. “But for me, past and present clients are my first priority.” Everything stops with him, DeHart said. He schedules appointments, talks to clients, and makes the repairs. “All of the accountability is on one person, which is tiring for me, but I feel like my clients like it,” he said. He said the long hours and grueling work can sometimes be difficult, but his Heavenly father gives him the strength to get through the day and provide assistance for those who need his help. “[My faith] is what grounds me and centers me,” he said. “At the end of the day nothing’s ever as bad as it seems when you have God helping you through the tough times.”

Christmas Blessings: Joy, Faith and Power By Pastor Roy Meadows Christmas began in the heart of God before the World was ever formed. Jesus is called “the lamb that was slain before the earth came into being.” 1 Peter 1:18-21 says, “18 For you know that it was not with perishable things such as silver or gold that you were redeemed from the empty way of life handed down to you from your forefathers, 19 but with the precious blood of Christ, a lamb without blemish or defect. 20 He was chosen before the creation of the world, but was revealed in these last times for your sake. 21 Through him you believe in God, who raised him from the dead and glorified him, and so your faith and hope are in God” (NIV). The Joy, Faith and Power that we, as Christians, have cannot be separated from the Christmas experience. We celebrate the coming of a “baby”, the “lamb of God”. And, though, the religious leaders of Jesus’ day did not recognize Him, many other people did recognize Him as the Promised Savior. Even, secular kings (the “Wise Men”) knew that there was more than “just a baby” lying in that manger that special night.

Merry Christmas & Happy New Year

This Child would forever change the World. As a child, Jesus amazed His teachers with His knowledge of God’s Word. He would change, for eternity, everyone who followed Him. Jesus changed a boisterous fisherman into a humble servant-leader who one day would lay down his life for the sake of the cause. By spending time

with a politically connected, cheating and corrupt tax collector, Jesus converted Zacchaeus into a repentant, benevolent citizen of Jericho. When others wanted to kill a woman who had sinned, Jesus forgave her and gently taught her accusers that everyone has sinned and is in need of the Savior. Two self-centered brothers, provoked by an ambitious mother who promoted them and always looked out for their future, turned into servant-leaders who presented the Good News of salvation through Jesus Christ. When two sisters were disappointed in Jesus for not acting according to their plan, He raised their brother from the dead and changed the lives of all who heard of this miracle. He turned their deep sorrow into unspeakable joy. We have this joy today through Christ. We rejoice that He came to the World to testify to the Truth and to forgive sin and to unite us with the Father. Our joy is complete when we realize that He is coming again. Prayer is the plan for communication between the Father and us. This Child has become our High Priest. He provides the entrance into the very presence of God. Our Joy is full because we can talk to the Father. We can confess our sin and be made clean. We can worship our Father who is in Heaven. We can thank God for what He has done. And we can ask God for what we need. All of this is

possible because of the “baby in a manger”. Is there any question why we rejoice at Christmas Time? Thankfulness flows from our hearts when we think of all that Jesus means to us. Especially, when we begin to realize what we mean to Him. He loves us so much that He gave His life to demonstrate God’s love for you and me. That is real love. In John 15:13 Jesus said, “13 Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends” (NIV). There was something about Jesus that drew people to him. Rich

people, poor people, men, women, children, the upright, the uptight, the serious seekers, the hypocrites, the “righteous” and the “sinners”; Jesus had a good Word for all of them. Jesus did good everywhere He went. All in God’s good time, Christmas brought Him here. He brought “good tidings of great Joy”. His presence meant that something good was about to happen. His presence in our lives today brings Joy and the awareness that God is going to move in a powerful way in our lives. Romans 15:13 says, “13 May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit” (NIV). Jesus gave people then and gives people now the power to turn from evil and to follow Him into joy, power and hope. He changes us from “victims” to “victors”. Jesus was faithful to the Father’s plan and call on His life. His faithfulness, from the manger to the cross, secured for us power over temptation. Though we will be tempted, He showed that victory over temptation is possible. 1 Corinthians 10:12-13 “12 So, if you think you are standing firm, be careful that you don’t fall! 13 No temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it” (NIV). Our Champion gives us victory over temptation and shows us how to get away from it. He gives us the power of discipline. We see in His life the very hard road that He traveled in serving the Father. Even when He

was rejected and scorned by men, he prayed and told people of the Father’s plan for them. When others may have given up, he pushed on. Jesus, the Christmas Child, the Savior, the Lord overcame fear with love. Love for God and love for others empowers us to overcome obstacles, hate, and even fear itself. What a wonderful gift! In Christmas, we see how far God goes to bring us back to Him. Knowing that we could not get to Him, He came to us: The Baby, The Son, The Savior, The Lord, The King Who will return one day.

Holiday Recipe: Christmas Ham Ingredients • 1 (12 lb.) bone-in ham • 1/2 c. whole cloves • 1 (20 oz.) can pineapple rings in heavy syrup • 1/2 c. packed brown sugar • 1 (12 fluid oz.) can lemon-lime flavored carbonated beverage • 1 (4 oz.) jar chopped maraschino cherries Directions 1. Preheat the oven to 325 degrees. 2. Place ham in a roasting pan. Score the rind of the ham with a diamond pattern. Press a clove into the center of each diamond. Drain the juice from the pineapple rings into a medium bowl, and stir in the brown sugar and lemon-lime soda. Coat the ham with this mixture. Arrange the pineapple rings over the outside of the ham. Place a maraschino cherry in the center of each pineapple ring, and secure with a toothpick. 3. Bake uncovered for 4 to 5 hours, basting frequently with the juices, until the internal temperature of the ham is 160 degrees. Be sure the meat thermometer is not touching the bone. Remove toothpicks before serving. Tip: You can use aluminum foil to keep food moist, cook it evenly, and make clean-up easier. Prep: 20 min. Cook: 4 hrs.

Families with Special Needs Children: Planning for the Transition to Adulthood and Beyond By Margaret McCullough Connolly, Attorney and Counselor at Law Do you know a family with a special needs child? As the child grows into the teenage years and adulthood, many parents are concerned about how they will protect the child from financial, physical, and legal harm as they turn 18 years old and “age-up” into legal adulthood. I work with these families, giving legal advice and counsel, and preparing necessary documents, as to the best way to protect their special child, taking into account the child’s own needs and capabilities, and the family’s resources. Some of the protections include:

• Guardianship – parents or adult siblings may need to maintain decision-making responsibility. • Alternatives to guardianship, including “Supported Decision Making Plans.” • Special Needs Trust – to protect SSI or Medicaid benefits while allowing for funding for future needs and protection of family assets. • Powers of Attorney. • Designation of guardians or substitute guardians in case of future disability. Families are advised to begin the planning for their child’s future early, at least by age 17 ½ , in order to prevent gaps in the child’s legal protections. This article does not constitute legal advice. It is to be used for descriptive purposes only. Please seek the advice of a competent lawyer in your state.

Why the Benghazi Hearings Matter By Gary Gillen Supporters of Hillary Clinton will tell you that the Benghazi Hearings went in her favor. They will tell you that the hearings were a waste of time and that nothing new came of them. This is the usual Clinton way of dealing with their many sorties into illegality. Delay, obfuscate then reply that the question has been asked and answered. But it hadn’t, until now. The Benghazi hearings, capably led by Congressman Trey Gowdy of South Carolina, were refreshing in that they were able to provide the American people the facts about the tragic and unforgivable failure of the Clinton State Department to help our Ambassador, Chris Stevens, and three other Americans who died as well as the other Americans who valiantly fought for their lives. Were it not for the hearings, we would not know that Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, in contravention of US Government rules, set up a server in her home in New York to shield her communica-

tions from lawful public scrutiny. All communications by government officials about their job is public information open to Freedom of Information requests by the public. That is true from your City Councilman to the President. Clinton has now admitted that she deleted some 30,000 emails she claims were personal but should she

Former Rice University Admissions Officer to Lecture on Ways to Slash College Costs Workshop is free – but fills up quickly… Katy, TX - An extremely popular lecture is being held again this year at Cinco Ranch Library for the parents of high school sophomores and juniors. The workshop, which is being offered without cost to attendees, will focus on little-known ways of getting grants and scholarships for college, regardless of GPA or how much money a family earns. The class will cover topics such as how to double or triple eligibility for scholarships (even if a family makes too much money to qualify for financial aid), the secret to attending a private college or university for less than the December 2015 / January 2016

price of a state school and the single biggest mistake that 9 out of 10 parents make when trying to figure out how to fund their child’s college education. This class is free and registration is required. Tickets are available on a “first-come, first-served” basis. Space is limited by the size of the room. It is being held at the Cinco Ranch Library located at 2620 Commercial Center Blvd., in Katy, on Thursday, August 20th from 7:00 to 8:30pm. The library is across the street from Cinco Ranch High School about one block from Grand Parkway/Hwy 99. Kurt Goedecke, ChFC, is teaching

the workshop. Mr. Goedecke is the former Assistant Director of Admissions at Rice University and a nationally recognized expert on college planning. A word to the wise – don’t wait to register. Past events have filled up quickly. To reserve a seat go to www.CollegeMoneyForTexans.org.

be allowed to make that decision? The FBI is investigating that breach of the law now. And most important, her private server did not have the high level of security the State Department servers do. How much sensitive or Top Secret information is now in the hands of the Chinese or Russians because of her failure to safeguard our information? Were it not for the hearings we would not know that the Ambassador sent, literally, hundreds of requests for added security for days up to and including the day he was murdered. I don’t know which is worse, that Clinton knew about the requests and ignored them or she surrounded herself with such incompetence that they failed to inform her. Were it not for the hearings we would not know that, with our facility and its people under siege fighting for their lives, Clinton didn’t rush to the White House Situation Room to direct efforts to save them. She didn’t stay at her desk at the State Department to monitor the event. She went home. And worse, we learned that the President jetted off to Las Vegas for a Democratic fundraiser. All this while Americans fought for and, in four cases lost, their lives. Were it not for the hearings we would not know that shortly

after issuing a press release blaming a video for a “spontaneous protest” she emailed her daughter the truth. The next day, while the Obama Administration continued to blame the video she emailed the Prime Minister of Egypt with these words, “We know the attack in Libya had nothing to do with the film. It was a planned attack. Not a protest.” Even more disgusting, days later, as the bodies of these American heroes arrived in the US, she and the President told the assembled family members the ultimate lie, that the video was to blame. Of course, he had an election coming up and truth was less important to them than winning. It is rich that the Democrats on the committee railed against the $5 Million cost of the committee as if spending your money bothered them. The cost of finding the truth about what happened at Benghazi was less than the transportation cost of even one of President Obama’s Hawaiian vacations. Were it not for these hearings, we would not know the truth.

Cracking the Teenager Code: Three Ways to Get Your Kids to Talk to You By Dr. Rebecca Deurlein If you’re a parent, you’re about halfway through the school year, one you no longer see as new, or a blank slate, but one that is likely leaving you tired, frustrated, and perplexed. Why won’t my daughter talk to me about what’s going on with her friends? Why does my son lie to me about not having homework, and why is my previous “A” student now making “C’s”? These are questions that keep parents up at night, that turn their brown hair to gray. Parenting is tough, and parenting teens through school is even tougher. But there are ways to communicate with your kids, ways to run your home and family life, and ways to be involved in school that are appropriate, healthy, and constructive. My book Teenagers 101 talks about this from my perspective, that of a 20-year veteran high school teacher who has taught thousands of teenagers and raised two of my own. This column, which will appear each month in this magazine, will offer tidbits from my book to help you navigate the waters of raising teenagers

who, with your guidance, will become responsible, respectful, and independent. Much of my discussion in this column will focus on teens taking responsibility for their choices and the ensuing consequences. That includes paying attention in class, completing homework on their own, managing their individual schedules, learning life skills, and displaying a Christian attitude of respect and loving logic. This month, we’ll focus on the basic foundation of these behaviors: fostering open communication between parents and kids that is calm and productive. This begins with 3 basic steps. 1. Don’t overreact – As Christian parents, we tend to feel that if we attend church as a family, pray together, and ground our kids in the Word, they will resist temptations and stand apart from their peers. Certainly, growing up in a Christian household has a profound effect on kids. But keep in mind – they’re still kids, and no matter how important you believe yourself to be in their lives, their peers are more important. Acceptance is a basic need for all humans, and teens will do almost anything to fit in with their peers. When this happens, it is crucial that you remain calm and understanding, that you listen with an open mind and heart, and that you react in a way that will keep your kids talking to you. I’ve had some difficult conversations with my kids – in fact, lots of them – and I knew I succeeded in my role as parent when they came back for more. Even in their 20s, they call me with their problems, and while they may be afraid to tell me about a huge mistake or choice they made, they do, because they know I’ll still love them and talk them through it without judging them or “flipping out.”

2. Like or at least find good qualities in their friends and significant others – Yes, this is sometimes very hard to do. But the second you tell your kids not to talk to or hang out with another kid, you will send them running straight into that relationship. It is in teens’ natures to break away from parents and think for themselves, and while you may view this as rebellion, they view it as necessary to their independence. It’s perfectly fine to show concern about a friend, but focus on the friend’s actions and behaviors as concrete examples of your concern, versus attacking the individual. Instead of saying, “I don’t like that kid – he seems wild,” say, “I didn’t like that he stayed out past his parents’ curfew. Why do you think he did that?” Then listen. Which leads us to number 3. 3. Really listen to your kids – Probably the single biggest complaint I hear from teens about their parents is that they just don’t listen. They preach, they lecture, they talk, talk, talk (remember, this is the teen perspective), but they don’t hear their kids. As adults, we feel we have wisdom and experience to offer our children. This is true, but when we take a didactic approach to sharing advice, our kids shut down, because we are talking at them rather than to them. It’s much more constructive to ask strategic questions of your kids that get them talking so you can really get inside their heads. When they ask for advice, by all means give it, but don’t assume they always want it. Sometimes, they just want to share their thoughts, vent their frustrations, or find validation from the people they love most. Be those people, because when you are, the lines of communication will open up, and so will a whole new world of mutual respect and love.

Incident Presents Unique Opportunity, Katy ISD Superintendent Says By Jessa McClure A nervous seventh-grader walks up to a podium situated in front of several Katy Independent School District School Board members. The room grows silent as Jordan Wooley tells administrators that one of her teachers made her feel as though she had to deny God to receive a passing grade. “Today I was given an assignment in school that questioned my faith and told me that God was not real,” Wooley said at the beginning of her statement at the Oct. 26 Board meeting. She goes on to say that her

teacher asked the class to determine whether God was a fact, opinion or myth. The West Memorial Junior High School student said several

of her classmates were upset by the assignment, citing their belief in God. And when they asked if they could respond with their own beliefs, they were told they would get the answer marked wrong.

Katy ISD Superintendent Alton Frailey told the young girl that she was brave to stand up for what she believes in and apologized that she felt her faith was called into question. “We will be looking into that, and we very much appreciate you coming,” Frailey said at the School Board meeting on Oct. 26. The district spent the next few days investigating the incident and was unable to corroborate Wooley’s allegations. “If I had any reason to believe that there was evidence to support it—that a teacher did what was alleged—I would stand with Jordan as well,” the superintendent said at a press conference on Oct. 29. After speaking in front of the press and members of the community, Frailey released a statement discussing his own faith and how troubled he was over the incident. “As a life-long Christian, I too was very concerned when I first heard about this at Monday’s Board meeting,” he said. “The experience the student described does not speak to the principles and character of Katy ISD and the community in which it belongs.” He said it is never okay for a student to feel they must denounce their faith. “That’s just not going to happen here,” he said. “That’s not our Katy community. That’s not our school district. That’s not who we are.”

Frailey acknowledged the student’s allegations, but said the school administration feels certain that “the teacher’s activity and interaction with students was never ill-intended or designed to denounce anyone’s beliefs or admonish anyone for their faith.” Although the allegations were discovered to be unfounded, Frailey does admit that the worksheet in question did contain inappropriate material, and the district sincerely apologizes. “The teacher and the school cannot take back the sequence of unfortunate events that resulted from the class activity, or the commentary or misinformation that has ensued,” he said in the statement. “However, we can all learn from the experience this incident has created.” The superintendent assured parents and community members that curriculum and school activities will be closely monitored in the future, and said the incident has given the community a unique opportunity. “I encourage us to reflect upon this experience and use it as a catalyst for strengthening our deeply-rooted Katy values and our

importance to one another as we endeavor to give our children a quality place to live and whole learning experiences.”

Faith West Academy

Foundations Academy

Since 1982 Katy’s oldest and largest private school, Faith West Academy, continues to uphold core values of reverence for God; respect for ourselves, others, and authority; and responsibility for one’s action. Located on 42 acres just east of the city of Katy, FWA provides a safe, Christian environment for preschool (starting at age 3) through 12th grade. As an extension of the preschool, FWA hosts a popular Mother’s Day Out Program that enrolls students as early as 15 months old. FWA serves a growing number of international students seeking studies in America by providing them with on-campus boarding facilities.

Foundations Academy is owned and operated by families who are actively involved in local churches, including volunteering as Sunday School teachers, youth leaders and are active Deacons. At Foundations Academy, we believe the preschool years are the most impressionable and critical season of a child’s life. Therefore, it is our goal at the Academy to provide a solid foundation for each child’s well-being and education to build upon as they grow older. With this basic foundation of strong self-awareness and academic concepts, children will be more equipped to excel as they enter the school age years.

5 Ways to Worship as a Family By Paul Montgomery Paul tells us in Romans 12 to present our bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is our spiritual worship. If your entire life should be lived as an act of worship, how should that translate to your family? Here are five things you can do to worship together as a family. Attend church together God has called us to live out our faith in community (Heb. 10:24-25). If you make a commitment to physically be in a position to hear from the Lord each week and be encouraged by others doing the same, how could your family not be changed? Pray together Blessing the food at dinner does not count. Set aside a few minutes each day to pray with each other. Share specific struggles or challenges and be intentional about lifting them up to the Lord (Phil. 4:6). Also, try creating a short list of people who you know have prayer needs and commit to pray for them together. Serve together We are called to put the interest of others before our own (Phil. 2:3-4), and there is no better way to do it than by serving. This

will look different for everyone, so figuring out what works best for your family is important. It could be anything from going on a mission trip, doing yard work for the elderly, babysitting kids to give a young couple time alone, or cooking dinner for your next door neighbor. Pray that the Holy Spirit would show you where and how your family can serve together. Love one another None of us deserve love, but God reaches out to us anyway because He is love. He loved us while were far off and sent His son to make atonement for our sin. Jesus loved sacrificially for our sake and we should do the same for our family. The more we love one another, the more God abides in us and His love is perfected within us (1 John 4:7-12). Finish this sentence – I can love my family sacrificially this week by_____________. Read the bible together There is no greater way to increase your faith and trust in God than by reading His word (Rom. 10:17). The bible tells the story of

our creation, fall, redemption through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, and ultimate restoration at His return. It shows us the depths of God’s love for us and the great price He willingly paid to win us back from death. The bible teaches us how to live. The bible teaches us how to love one another. The bible teaches us how to be a family.

Accountable Partner – Why You Fail By Dale Tyson Accountable Partner People have goals to accomplish in their personal life, and business or job. Dale says “A goal is something you want to achieve. It can have a specific end date such as running a marathon or starting a business. It could continue for the rest of your life such as staying fit or maintaining a certain weight.” The general types of personal goals fit into fitness, nutrition, financial, spiritual, and personal development. A goal in an existing business can be an expansion that requires certain activities be completed. A goal in your job could be a promotion and you need to take some classes or finish a degree. A goal can be created anytime of the year, but many people decide to make a change at the end of the year and come up with a New Year’s Resolution. It is great that they want to make a change. A university study says only 8% of people accomplish their New Year’s Resolution. It is terrible to think of people not doing New Year’s Resolutions because they continue to fail each year. This percentage could apply to people’s goals throughout the year. Why? Here are some common reasons (excuses): • You do not have someone to help you.

• You have an unrealistic goal and/or do not know what to do • You do not have the goal and objectives written down • You have a challenge contacting the people helping you. • You do not have an accountability system to document what you have done and need to do.

What do all of these have in common? Accountability!

Who is involved in accountability? You could be a leader helping people accomplish their goal. Leaders include various types of coaches, trainers, teachers, doctors, or anyone influencing people to improve their life. You as a leader must recognize the importance of formal accountability for yourself to help your clients, and for your clients to do what they say they are going to do. You could be working with family and friends to accomplish a goal. Your group gets together to walk, jog, exercise, or other activities. There is encouragement, a challenge, a bit of competition, or a kick-in-the-butt if someone is slacking off. You could be working on a goal by yourself and do not have any one to help you. It takes someone with special determination and you have an internal accountability to continue the journey toward your goal. Could you accomplish more if you were included in a group of other people with similar a goal? What is involved? Once you have a goal, it must be broken down into steps and may have milestones to know you are on track with your journey. Occasionally a leader has developed a checklist of the steps, but the vast majority of the time, the steps are unique to you. Your accountable partner understands these. Dale refers to the steps and milestones as objectives. What are you going to do and when is this going to be done. It could be daily, weekly, monthly, occasionally, or based on some other factor. There is no rule to what and when, just that it is written down. Writing these is critical because it makes the journey a conscious activity so you

take the proper action. Objectives WILL change. As you progress through the journey and accomplish an objective, there is the next step or level to reach. What you do for each objective leads to a result. By writing down your objectives and your results, it creates a type of journal or log so you can see and recognize the progress. So what can be done to help leaders, your family and friends, or yourself share and keep track of each other – aka Accountability? Use an online accountability system. Hopefully the person helping has a system. If they don’t or you have a personal group, we have a system called Accountable Partner which help leaders, groups, and individuals. As we close out 2015 and move into 2016, this is a typical time to start a new or continue an old goal. Let’s be make a change this time to work with someone or your clients to set a realistic goal and objectives, work with a community of others helping each other, and use an accountability system to keep track of everything. Dale does not want you to be one of the 92% of people that does not accomplish the goal. Dale is a business coach and owns a couple businesses. He wanted an effective way to keep track of his client’s goal, current objective, see their results at any time, and an effective way to communicate with them as a group and individually. He created an online accountability system, but realized other people need help with accountability. The system is available for other leaders, groups of family and friends, or individuals to use. For more information or demonstration, call Dale Tyson direct at (713) 510-5430 or email dale@AccountablePartner.com. The system’s website is www. AccountablePartner.com and check the Features page.

Local Christian School Highlights Madison “Aussie” Telschow

William Richardson

Classification: 11th Grade Fatih West Academy

Classification: 12th Grade Faith West Academy

Madison attended a private, Christian school in Perth, Australia (hence her nickname, Aussie) for years prior to returning to the U.S. last year. She recalls that when she first moved there at the age of 11, her new friends had expectations of her as an American. Her accent was what they might have expected, and they often asked her to repeat phrases. Her classmates expected her to have blonde hair and blue eyes. She did not. What they found was a girl with whom they had a lot in common. They found a girl firm in her beliefs who set an example for others to follow. Madison continues to demonstrate those same attributes as a leader in the activities, clubs, and organizations she has joined. Madison is an active member of the Second Baptist Jump Team, a group of high school singers and dancers that help lead worship for all ages. She is the school chapel band leader and a varsity cheerleader; last year, she took 1st place at Nationals in Dance Duo.

During a football game in August, the senior quarterback of the Faith West Eagles, William Richardson, faced a season-ending injury. William was being helped off the field before the shocked eyes of his fellow teammates, including the younger athletes who look up to him. The Faith West Eagles stopped the game, kneeled down in silence, and prayed. Aspirations of becoming a football player have always motived Will because of his father’s unfinished dream of playing football. This same desire is what is carrying him through the torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in his left knee. His undying love and respect for the sport are not at all broken. Even while injured, Will was constantly around the team, attending every practice and every game while he was on crutches or wearing a knee brace. “I am blessed to have the team that I have…I want to be there for my team,” Will said. Since the day of the injury, many things have changed tremendously for Will. He realizes how much love and passion he has invested in football, and we—the friends, the coaches, the teachers, the supporters—acknowledge Richardson’s place as the team leader, regardless of injury or where he stands on the field.

What to Expect from Your Baby’s First Visit to the Pediatrician Dr. Anuradha Rai UT Health Science Center at Houston It would be advisable for you to have chosen your pediatrician before your delivery. It is important to be comfortable with your pediatrician’s philosophy on medical issues such as schedule of vaccinations, medications, etc. as well as to have knowledge of the regular office hours and after hours care. Your first visit may be earlier than the typical two week well checkup. This is determined by how your baby is doing at the time of hospital discharge. For your visit, try to schedule it either early in the morning or early afternoon to decrease exposure of your baby to sick children in the waiting room. It is advisable to bring a friend or family member with you to help with your baby as you fill out paperwork. You will need to bring your baby’s hospital discharge paperwork with you as well. It is best to dress your baby in a simple

way that makes it easy to undress and dress. You may also want to bring an extra change of clothes, diapers, formula, etc. for your baby so that you are best prepared for anything that may arise. During the visit, your baby will be weighed, measured, and given a full physical exam. Your pediatrician will ask you questions about the baby’s feedings, stools and wet diapers. Make a list of your concerns and address it with the pediatrician at this time. It is important to educate yourself and ask questions so that you feel comfortable taking care of your baby. Before you leave the office, schedule your next appointment and keep your pediatrician’s phone number handy if you have any questions. Dr. Anuradha Rai is a Board-Certified Pediatrician for UT Health Science Center at Houston and provides patient care at UT Physicians Pediatric Center at Cinco Ranch located at 10450 Spring Green Blvd. Suite B, Katy, TX 77494. To schedule an appointment, please call 713-486-5870
