Inspired

to Higher Education by Olivia Cane

Cambridge dictionary defines the word inspiration as, “someone or something that give you ideas for doing something.” Its root meaning is to “breath into.” In the case of Chevella Sampson, a hairstylist of ten years, that breath of inspiration came to her during a deeply moving spiritual transformation. “The Lord placed on my heart the urge to dig deeper,” she explained. “He called on me to study His word.” At the time, she didn’t know how God wanted her to do that. “Yet I was inspired to go to church one morning,” Chevella explains. “there I met a Belhaven University representative who told me that no matter what your course of study, Belhaven will teach you the word of Christ. I could actually feel God speaking to me.” “I was nervous. I hadn’t been in school for 25 years,” continues Chevella. “Would I be accepted How was I going to manage books, tuition, financial aid? But I wanted to learn more about the Bible, and I knew in my heart that the Christ-based curriculum at Belhaven was the right place for me. Then I called a Belhaven University counselor. It was like she completed my thoughts! All my fears were instantly put to rest. The staff made it so easy. Financial aid was available to me even before God promised me it would be. I

was overjoyed – and most importantly, I knew this was where I belonged.” Today, Chevella has been at Belhaven for two years. “Everybody seems like family They know your name and they want you to succeed. My professors have an open-door policy. If you need guidance, guidance will be provided to you. But it’s the Biblical perspective that’s super important. It doesn’t matter how smart you are or how much you’ve got it together –or even if you don’t have it together. Having a Biblical perspective in your education not only allows you to expand your career, it fulfills a purpose in life no matter what talent you have. Talent is no good without purpose. And your purpose is to know the word of Christ.” For Houston residents who want to complete a bachelor’s or master’s degree quickly and affordably, Belhaven University is the answer to a quality adult studies program. Both degree programs are tailored to the needs of busy working adults. Belhaven students graduate with the tools they need to stay competitive in today’s global economy, and they do it with all the love and support of the word of God. “Belhaven is everything you expect in a God-inspired learning environment,” Chevella says. “You will feel so at home here.”

Our Mission Statement:

“Our mission is to have a magazine devoted to His glory, provide cutting-edge stories important to today’s Christian, promote Christian-Judeo values we find important, and editorial content that your entire family can enjoy.”

Wow, what a busy two months it has been for us all! Our prayers and thoughts are with everyone who has experienced loss due to Harvey. Katy and Fort Bend County were two of the hardest hit areas due to flooding. Many have lost their homes, vehicles, jobs... some even lost their lives in this tragedy. Yet even in hardship, the Lord is with us. Our communities will stand strong, and we will rebuild. Thank you to everyone who donated their time and resources toward aiding in greater Houston’s recovery. Natural disasters can bring out the most admirable qualities in humanity; the way that everybody pulled together to help both friends and total strangers was nothing short of beautiful. We would also like to extend our condolences to my Pastor, Ed Young of Second Baptist Church. His wife, Jo Beth Young, passed away on September 17, 2017. She was 80 years old. Jo Beth never wanted the spotlight her husband is under, but she did incredible work behind the scene. She was a model Christian and wife to Pastor Young. Jo Beth will be greatly missed by all who knew her. On another note, the fall is usually my favorite time of the year. I love our first cool fronts and the changing of the seasons, but my favorite passion about the arrival of fall is pro football. This year, that has drastically changed. Nowadays, everything in our society has become politicized. Football, for many of us, used to be an escape from our country’s polarization and obsession with politics. Now, political agendas have infiltrated even our sports and pro athletes everywhere refuse to stand for the pledge of allegiance. In doing so, they refuse to honor this great country that has allowed them to become profitable; and for what? To protest against imagined grievances and so-called police brutality? There is an old saying, “you should never bite the hand that feeds you.” Not only has the NFL bitten our hands, but they’ve shown a utter lack of respect to our nation’s veterans that have given them the freedom to protest in the first place. If you feel you have grievances against the police, fine. Call a news conference or ask a television or radio station to give you 30 minutes to air your complaints. Such is your right as a citizen. Just don’t take it onto the playing field. We don’t want to hear it. First of all, the NFL is not a platform for free speech; it’s a work place environment. Professional football players are contracted employees who do not have the right to protest unless their boss (the NFL) gives them that right. Period. Furthermore, the NFL selectively enforces rules that they choose to enforce. Most people probably aren’t aware that the NFL already has a rule in place requiring everyone to stand for the pledge; look up Rule a62 63. What they choose to enforce or not to enforce is their business, but if they want to keep their fanbase and save the game, stand for the Pledge of Allegiance! Joseph R. Harvey’s Hidden Heroes By Dr. Rebecca Deurlein When you live in an area hit by a devastating hurricane mixed with tornadoes and recordbreaking flooding, it makes the international news. Dramatic rescues and fatalities fill the headlines and the sensational is made more so by unending media coverage. But most of us were impacted by the compassionate sacrifices of people who will never get national media coverage or be recognized by anyone beyond their Fort Bend circle. They are the hidden heroes, and their impact on our community has been profound. St. Theresa Catholic Church was one of the first to step up and offer shelter to local residents displaced by the storm. Uwaila Osaren, a church member, showed up to volunteer for a few hours but willingly took on a leadership role when it became clear she was needed. She began coordinating volunteers to set up a temporary shelter and collect the large influx of supplies that arrived steadily as people began emerging from their homes. The volunteer force was largely supported by I CERV, the Ismaili Community Involved in Responsible Volunteering - that group alone constituted 60-100 volunteers who worked three shifts for round-the-clock support and cataloging of supplies. “What has blown me away is people from all ethnicities and religions - not just the St. Theresa family - who have come together to help,” said Osaren. “Another pleasant surprise has been the teenagers who have shown maturity and dedication, working hard, staying as long as needed, and

completely disproving the negative stereotype of teenagers.” The church provided shelter and a supply drop-off point during the first week post-Harvey. However, many residents still couldn’t leave their neighborhoods and relied on a different kind of hero.

Jourdan Janik & Steve Alexander (not pictured) made 18 trips back & forth to the Fitzpatrick house floating in Ken Alexander’s clean up equipment. “They’re not just my friends,” said Mike Fitzpatrick, “they’re my heroes.”

Terry Clayton, a resident of Sienna Plantation, one of the hardest hit neighborhoods, was instrumental in keeping everyone informed of Harvey’s path, tornado warnings, evacuation schedules, and everything

the neighbors needed to know to stay safe. Clayton started the Sienna Plantation Neighbors group on Facebook back in January, having no idea the part it would play in saving lives during Hurricane Harvey. When Harvey’s path came closer to Houston, Clayton took to the Facebook group page to update residents and keep them informed. Soon, the neighborhood discovered the most reliable information was coming from Clayton. Thirty minutes after Clayton warned the group of the first tornado, she received 200 requests to join. Within 12 hours, she received 1500 requests. Neighbors began posting updates of lightning strikes and more tornado warnings, and by Wednesday, she had 5000 requests to join the group. Clayton explained, “I had no idea how many people were watching me and how my reactions to the storm would affect other people. I just tried to be honest, to get beyond the rumors, without causing panic. I didn’t realize I was being a leader. I didn’t know people were looking to me for answers. It turns out, my group had become a lifeline, and it was very humbling.” Clayton worked tirelessly to stay on top of the information and communicate it to her neighbors. She didn’t pay attention to the amount of time she was logging until her hands started shaking and she realized she’d been typing on her phone day and night. But for someone who values integrity more than anything, she was touched by her neighbors’ trust in her and by the sense of community they all shared. “We all became family, neighbors helping neighbors, and it made me realize, none of us has to be alone.” Mike Fitzpatrick, a resident of Prestwick Subdivision, couldn’t agree more. While his wife, Laurie, was in New York moving her youngest daughter into a college dorm, Harvey was leaving a flood of water in its wake. Alone in the house, Mike watched the water rise until it began seeping into their home.

“I don’t want to remember the sound the house made when water came in,” Fitzpatrick said. “The house gurgled and groaned, and upstairs, trying to sleep, I knew it was happening.”

Flooding and debris collect at Mike and Laurie Fitzpatrick’s house. Mike credits Ken Alexander and his family with sacrificing time, equipment, and considerable time to salvage much of the couple’s home.

The next morning, a friend showed up with a raft and began carrying belongings and the couple’s four cats to safety. On the second day of flooding, Ken Alexander, owner and president of Build Pro, a commercial and residential contractor, arrived at the house with family and friends and a canoe filled with fans, dehumidifiers, and food. They worked to salvage all they could, taking home wet towels to wash and dry and return the

next day for more cleanup. Alexander left items he needed for his own business to help the family dry out and minimize their own expenses. This was a godsend, since Laurie, finally able to return to Houston, also had to return to her pediatric medical practice, where patients had been waiting for care. As much as Laurie wanted to be home to help her husband, she had to care for her patients, keep her staff employed, and administer tetanus shots to those who had been working in flood waters. She saw 40 patients a day, then went home to haul debris and set up temporary living quarters upstairs. Fitzpatrick worried that while his wife was caring for everyone else, no one was caring for her. But that’s where friends came in, showing up each day to offer support wherever it was needed. Fitzpatrick said, “Even though thank you sounds like it’s not enough, I’ve learned to never stop saying it. I don’t know how to repay people for what they’ve done for me. There’s not enough words in the English language to convey the thanks and gratitude I have for these people. All I can do is use that motivation to help my neighbor and friends.” That concept of paying it forward has been a popular one in Houston, where “Houston Strong” has become both an attitude and words to live by. Josh Moore was able to witness the power of God and the concept of paying it forward through a series of events that brought out the beauty in Harvey. As the storm raged outside on the first night, Josh and his wife Anji were still in a dry home, but their neighbors, who were close to the bayou, were already seeing flooding. The power had gone off, so the families met at Josh and Anji’s house for a candlelit dinner. As they prayed over their dinner, the lights came on, and as Josh said, “It felt like hope, like God was there.” The neighbors spent the night, while Josh dug a trench around his home to help collect water and worried over his one-year-old in his crib upstairs.

By Monday, the Moore’s house was no longer a refuge as it filled with water. It wasn’t until later that Josh realized his neighborhood was one of those sacrificed to minimize flood damage to others. His hope was quickly fading until he heard a knock at his front door. Michael Gilbert, a stranger to the Moores, introduced himself. He was a member of Anji’s father, Pastor Dave Peterson’s, church, and he was there to help. He said, “Your father-in-law saved my life and now I’m going to save yours.” He had brought two guys and a raft to carry out the Moores’ most prized possessions. In this case, that was Josh and Anji’s children. “I had just met Michael,” Josh said, “and I knew I could trust him. He literally carried my kids out of the flood and made sure they were on a boat to safety. Since the rescue only got us out of our homes and neighborhood, Michael took us to a safe location and made sure we were cared for. And he did it all because God saved him years before. It really drove home the message that God does all the work, all the saving.” That was the message as people emerged from their homes to survey Harvey’s wreckage and determine what to do next. River Pointe Church welcomed a full congregation that gave a standing ovation and cheered for Fort Bend County Judge Bob Hebert as he was recognized for his tireless work in the community. The church fed 150 National Guardsmen in the first days after the hurricane, and for the next weeks, coordinated teams were set up to work at homes hit hardest. Pastor Patrick Kelly said, “The eye could see but the mind couldn’t process what we were seeing. We had to trust God. We had no control.” He told the story of a single woman who had lost everything and felt that God had abandoned her. River Pointe Church showed up with a team that helped clean out her house and restore living conditions, and the transformation to her heart was even greater than what took place in her home. She described the volunteers as “a light in the midst of great darkness who restored my faith in humanity.”

Kelly added, “Man is not capable of accumulating anything that will provide total security. That’s why we need God, in a big, deep way.” The church continued to send out teams as members of the congregations showed up in droves to volunteer their time and resources. Many headed to Pecan Grove, where work groups of 30 at each home did more in one day than the homeowners could have done in a month. In total, over a

The two headed to Beaumont with three trucks loaded with supplies, at one point requesting a police escort to get through flooded areas. The two-hour ride became a six-hour trek each way, but Dye and Schleicher were determined to help where no one else could. “I heard on the radio that high water stopped many supply efforts to Beaumont. It felt good knowing that our shipment helped make a difference,” said Schleicher.

Bringing Out the Best You By Dr. Rebecca Deurlein Suzanne Bruce & Associates Dermatology, located on Kingsland Blvd in Katy, is celebrating 20 years of making the world more beautiful through medical and cosmetic dermatology. Offering an array of services, the practice is comprised of physicians, all Board Certified, and all receiving extensive and ongoing training in cosmetic procedures. The credentials of the person who will be working on your face or body should be of utmost importance, according to Dr. Pauline Scott, a physician at the practice. “This is not an area where you want to buy a Groupon and make saving money your number one priority,” she said. “I’ve seen serious damage done by people who took a weekend class in a new treatment, have no medical background or knowledge, and go ahead and perform procedures that can seriously scar patients.” That’s why Scott is so proud to be a member of the Suzanne Bruce staff. The practice offers medical dermatology including skin checks; acne, eczema, psoriasis and wart treatments; and surgical dermatology for skin cancer and cysts. In addition, they are seeing

medical conditions and cosmetic treatments, and their spa offers facials, chemical peels, microdermabrasion, and laser hair removal. Patients flock to the doctors for the most commonly requested treatments: laser hair removal (for both men and women) and Botox. The desire for both procedures speaks to changing societal standards. “With the popularity of social media and the ubiquitous selfies, more and more young people are getting rejuvenating treatments to keep their youthful appearance,” explained Scott. “On the other end of the spectrum, older people are staying in the workforce longer and competing against their younger counterparts, so appearance continues to matter to them.” Not every treatment is about looks, however. One of the most popular and successful procedures performed today is Miradry, which stops excessive underarm sweating permanently. Sweat glands are removed, and in recent studies, patients are still happy with results as much as three years after the procedure. “Especially in Houston, this procedure can be a life changer for people who previously felt that they had to stay indoors or risk the embarrassment of underarm stains. I’ve seen a huge boost in confidence from people who have this procedure and no longer worry about stressful situations at work or being outside in the Houston heat,” Scott said.

Hope On the Radio Waves By Caitlin Richards For 35 years, KSBJ has been the “Voice of Hope Connecting People to God” in the greater Houston area. Since KSBJ first signed on air in June of 1982, listeners have not only heard uplifting music, but also scripture and messages of hope to bring them closer to God. “We started as a radio station with an on-air ministry and over the years KSBJ has evolved to be so much more,” Megan Berry, KSBJ Marketing Manager, said. “With our special events and prayer stations we strive to be out in the community truly defining a church without walls.” KSBJ offers contemporary Christian music and can be heard on 89.3FM for listeners north and east of downtown Houston and on 96.9 FM for listeners south and west of downtown Houston. Or KSBJ can be streamed online via KSBJ.org for listeners all over the globe. In 2010, KSBJ launched NGEN radio for the next generation of Christian music listeners. NGEN can be heard on 91.7 FM and offers listeners alternative pop and hip hop music while bringing a message of hope, unity and love. Something KSBJ is most noted for is their registered trademark slogan ‘God listens.’ As an organization built on a foundation of prayer KSBJ believes God listens. This is displayed in not only their company culture, but also their prayer ministry.

“Prayer and our prayer ministry is one of the most important things we do here at KSBJ,” Berry said. “Everyone here prays – our DJs pray with listeners on the air. Our staff prays before meetings. Every day at noon, we say the Lord’s Prayer on-air.” Through their prayer ministry, for years KSBJ has offered their Prayer and Care Line for callers to call into to have a prayer volunteer pray with them when they need someone to listen and to lift them up in prayer. Anyone can call 281-652-5555 to receive this service. “That is what prayer is – a conversation with our loving God who

always listens to us,” Berry said. “For someone to get involved, they can listen on air – they will hear the prayers of our callers, guests, and DJs, or they can call the Prayer and Care line. They can also go to our website to submit a prayer request or learn how to pray or sign up to be a prayer volunteer.” A board of directors, who are volunteers from across the Greater Houston area and represent diverse denominations, backgrounds and professions, governs KSBJ. Through the years, KSBJ has hosted numerous special events and supported numerous ministries to further their goal to be the ‘Voice of Connecting People to God.’ “We are involved in many projects in the community,” Berry said. “We know how important it is to be involved in our community, to listen to the needs of the people here, and to share what is happening with our listeners.” Recently, one of the bigger ministry initiatives KSBJ has taken on is partnering with the foster care community in the greater Houston area. Through this project they help bridge churches with this community, to begin caring for foster children. Now, as Houston and the surrounding communities begin to rebuild after Hurricane Harvey, KSBJ wants to be the voice of hope even more for everyone who was impacted. Currently, KSBJ is partnering with Samaritan’s Purse, The Relief List and area churches to provide relief to those affected by Hurricane Harvey.

“We want to be the ‘Voice of Hope Connecting People to God’ in the greater Houston area and especially for those who have been devastated by Harvey,” Berry said. “We know many people are hurting, and some may also be angry – angry that this happened and questioning why.” During this especially trying time for so many in the greater Houston area, KSBJ has continued to be the voice of hope for many through their radio broadcast, social media outlets, support efforts, foster ministry and especially their prayer ministry. “We are committed to providing continued hope and help to those impacted by Harvey,” Berry said. “We are excited to work with our partners to help foster children in our area. And we will continue to be the ‘Voice of Hope Connecting People to God.” In the days following Harvey, KSBJ partnered with various Christian artists to support relief efforts and have also been an integral part of sharing information and support for those impacted. “Our prayer is that KSBJ/NGEN can provide our listeners with hope,” Berry said. “We know that even in the midst of catastrophe, God can bring good. We hope this will help everyone here in our city realize how much Christ loves them.” For more information about KSBJ, visit KSBJ.org. Teaching Kids to Be Proactive By Dr. Rebecca Deurlein We’re all familiar with the concept of proactive versus reactive responses. A proactive approach anticipates and seeks to avoid potential problems or obstacles. A reactive approach waits for problems to arise and then deals with them as they occur. As it turns out, both can be beneficial, but while knowledge should be gained from mistakes and difficult processes, stress can be reduced by avoiding them in the first place. This is where teens and children really need the help of adults. Children are already at a disadvantage with an undeveloped frontal lobe that hinders their ability to see long-term, to think about the consequences of their actions, or to plan ahead. That’s why we often shake our heads and ask, “What were they thinking?” when it comes to this age group. They weren’t. They haven’t learned to be proactive, to consider that what they are doing now matters to their future. Enter mom and dad. You have a lifetime of experience and you’ve oftentimes wished you would have thought things through before making a big decision or taking an action you later regretted. You want your kids

to benefit from your experience, especially since being proactive crosses many domains, including school work, goal setting, and preparedness for activities, sports, and other extra-curriculars. It’s important that they get it now, or they may face much unnecessary hardship down the road. So how can you prepare your kids to be prepared? Think about this: Kids need to have goals. What’s the point? What are they working toward? Why are they participating? Do grades matter? Unbelievably, we fail to talk to kids about these big questions. We put them in activities, send them off to school, and encourage them to join clubs, but never tell them how they’re going to benefit themselves or others through their participation. Kids needs to know how today’s behaviors affect their future. If they don’t, they will go into everything with a short-sighted attitude and therefore, a lack of internal motivation. They will question working hard on something, and making sacrifices for it, if they don’t see the value. Kids need to know that every action has a consequence. Science teaches us that for every action, there is a reaction. Every decision or indecision, both good and bad, leads to an outcome. Kids struggle with understanding this concept, even as they age and go on to college. Witness some of the behavior of young twenty-somethings and there’s no doubt that they still haven’t grasped the concept of consequences. But the sooner you talk to your kids about this, the better chance you have of getting through. Discuss how a decision about homework, or quitting a team, or running for office will have long-term implications. Have your kids walk through various scenarios and really think through each decision they make. Kids need to realize that staying ahead of the game is easier than playing catch up. Every person alive has let a job or responsibility slip and then scrambled at the last minute to try to minimize the damage. And every person alive has dealt with the repercussions of procrastination. Teaching your kids to work ahead and to plan their schedules will positively impact every area of their lives. As I tell my students, “If you control your schedule,

it won’t control you.” Kids need to experience how good it feels to be proactive. Once kids begin to plan, work toward goals, and think through decisions, they will see a noticeable change in their lives. They will experience less stress and their confidence will grow as they gain control of their responsibilities. Research shows that kids crave structure, rules, and boundaries. Recording homework in a school agenda, breaking large assignments down and working on them each night, and keeping a personal calendar of upcoming events are all ways kids create structure in their lives. Positive results breed internal motivation, so the more proactive kids are, the more motivated they become to take control of and responsibility for their decisions. Of course, the best way to teach kids to become proactive is to demonstrate it in your own life. Teach by example and show your kids that foreseeing obstacles and planning ahead is always better than dealing with the aftermath of a failure that could have been avoided.

Neighbor Helping Neighbor By Gary Gillen While it only rained for 5 days, not 40, it was almost biblical in volume. For some lucky folks, it hardly affected their schedules. For others, their lives were altered forever. Some lost everything. Many will spend months, even years, recovering. Some will never really recover. To see the devastation is truly heartbreaking. As Christians, we are called to help those in need. This week I witnessed that and more. A friend had water in his house so several friends went to work removing carpet, flooring and sheetrock. One might think that service, repeated thousands of times across Texas since Harvey arrived, was the story from a Christian perspective and perhaps it is. I submit, however, that there is a larger story here. It is the story I witnessed in my friend’s neighborhood. When I arrived in Riverstone that morning, the streets were already lined with piles of sheetrock, carpet and the soaked pieces of so many interrupted lives. Furniture, children’s toys, cabinets were piled high beside the street awaiting the claw-fitted trucks that would soon arrive to take these mounds of memories to places where mountains of memories are being built. The streets were also lined with cars and pickup trucks. Homeowners, relatives, friends all arriving to help with the hot, dirty task of “mucking” houses, removing water-soaked carpet, sheetrock, furniture and sand. Too many cars, too much debris, hot temperatures and challenging work. But no disputes, no arguments. An attitude of hopefulness mixed

with exhaustion and appreciation. I saw White, South Asian, Hispanic, and Black. I do not know the religious beliefs of any of them. It didn’t matter today. Mostly, I saw people. People whose homes were unlivable. People who wanted to help friends. Groups came by to deliver bags with hot dogs, chips and cookies. Others delivered very welcome ice-cold water bottles. No one asked about our political beliefs or our faith. It was just people helping those who needed help. Neighbors loaning tools, wheel barrows and words of encouragement to people who were short of confidence but long on determination.

My experience is just a single story among many thousand across the gulf coasts of Texas and Louisiana. As a Texan and an American, I’m proud of the enormous response we’ve seen from across the country and, really, around the world. This disaster has pulled the heart strings of so many people and their generosity is remarkable. Please remember that another disaster will happen. The attention of the media will move to another story. We will be distracted by politics or sports or celebrity lives. For many people though, their lives have changed. They will never be the same and they will continue to need your help. Please do not forget them. Recovery from a life-altering disaster like Hurricane Harvey and the attendant post-traumatic stress will take months if not years. Your neighbors will continue to need your generosity, your understanding and your support. Don’t forget them. If you have been part of the response to Harvey, let me say, “thank you.” Your generosity has changed lives. Let’s prove that we are a generous people now and in the future. After all, wouldn’t you want that for yourself? Gary Gillen owns and operates Gillen Pest Control in Richmond. business SPOTLIGHT

SUZANNE BRUCE & ASSOCIATES DERMATOLOGY OFFICE

You will find their offices on the third floor of a green building (LEED Gold Registered) on Kingsland Boulevard, and from the moment you step off the elevators you are impressed with a beautiful, healthy environment. Decorated with art from a local artist, Dixie Friend Gay, you can’t help but get vibes of the Katy Prairie. Unlike other offices, here board-certified dermatologists perform most of the cosmetic procedures. Their philosophy is to provide services to their patients that result in healthy and beautiful skin. From medical care that treats a range of skin conditions, such as acne and skin cancers to cosmetic anti-aging therapies, they have the latest equipment and training to treat their fellow Katy residents.

Dr. Kenne Ogunmakin • Dr. Suzanne Bruce • Maria Antesoda, RN • Dr. Pauline Scott

One of the things that makes this dermatologists’ office different from others is their involvement with the local community. Look for Dr. Suzanne Bruce, Dr. Kenne Ogunmakin and Dr. Pauline Scott at Katy and Cinco Ranch events, and you will see them there sponsoring the sunscreen booth. They also volunteer to see Christ Clinic patients in need of skin care. During our visit, Dr. Scott explains how important sun safety is. She lives in Cinco Ranch and sees many residents who were never taught just how powerful a little bit of sunscreen can be. She shares, “Not only can it help protect against the dangers of skin cancer, but also it can delay premature aging, such as wrinkles, dark spots and dull-looking skin.” Dr. Ogunmakin points out, “All adults should be doing annual skin checks, too. We can often catch things before they become really problematic.”

The lobby at Suzanne Bruce and Associates is located on the 3rd floor of the state-of-the-art Katy Medical Plaza Building A - two blocks west of Grand Parkway on Kingsland Blvd.

Suzanne Bruce & Associates - Dermatology offers a wide range of cosmetic treatments, from well-known basics, such as Botox® and a variety of fillers, to high-tech skin resurfacing and tightening treatments. Dr. Bruce stresses, “It is all about preventive care. Start with a skincare regimen with scientifically proven ingredients. Then just doing simple treatments early at the first signs of aging can really pay dividends in the end.” Dr. Bruce, Dr. Ogunmakin and Dr. Scott are board-certified dermatologists and see patients of all ages for cosmetic and medical dermatology concerns at Suzanne Bruce and Associates - Dermatology located at 23510 Kingsland Blvd., Suite #300, Katy, Texas 77494. What Do We Do Now? By Jordan Harrell We evacuated our home last month. I left first with the three kids, mostly because the idea of being trapped in a house with three small children without water and power for days sounded like a death sentence. For everyone. My husband followed shortly thereafter, once we realized just how long we might be apart. So for days, we just sat at my in-laws’ house and watched the news on a nearly continuous loop, praying for who and what we left behind. As I watched one night, I saw a group of people huddled together on a highway overpass, the only place in the area not underwater, after being ferried by boat from their drowning homes. They held hands in a circle, hugged, and talked about things like survival and gratitude and bravery and the goodness of people. The rain was still pouring down. The scene transitioned to a new one, this time showing an ariel view of downtown Houston which looked like something out of an apocalyptic movie, the next one shot from a boat floating through a neighborhood of homes with water up to their roofs. I stared at the screen. This is heartbreaking stuff, I thought. How do you even make sense of it or explain it? Well, I can’t. I know that “God works in all things for the good of those who love him,” but it is so hard to find the good here.

Maybe, we can start with that group of people holding hands. It’s a stark contrast to the month before, isn’t it, when the news was full of marching torches and we felt a thick line being drawn between white and black and light and dark.

But then a flood came to one of the most diverse cities in the world. It didn’t care whether you were white or black, Asian or Hispanic, rich or

poor, educated or uneducated, citizen or immigrant. It forced itself into homes and drove out its owners. The rising waters proved to be the great equalizer, no one immune to their fury. I watched that group huddled together on a bridge holding hands of every shade, some rough and calloused, others smooth and manicured. There was a long list of differences between all of them, none of which mattered in that moment because they were alive. They no longer had homes or titles or material possessions to hinder them from just being human. Tears sat in their eyes. Their grip snugly, fiercely, enveloped that of their neighbor. The coverage continued of rescuers riding around in boats, people cooking hot meals, volunteers handing out water bottles, families opening their homes to strangers, and first responders embracing victims. Where headlines had just been filled with hate and division, they were suddenly of people literally risking their lives for others without concern for their own safety. And without concern for the color of another man’s skin. Because when we are stripped down to the basics, when we are forced out of our barely-desegregated neighborhoods, we find we are all just trying to survive, and even LIVE. And we need each other. When these things happen, we always wonder, “Why?” And I think that’s okay. But I also think there’s another question equally, if not more, important: “What now?”

What do we do now? We find ways to help. We give money, support, encouragement, time, resources. We love our neighbor, that neighbor we might not have known if it weren’t for tragedy, in real, tangible ways. We join hands with strangers and pray for a hurting people. We look for the helpers and tell them thank you. We find glimpses of God’s sovereignty and point those out to our children, reminding them of the words in John 16:33, “In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! For I have overcome the world.” What do we know now? People are good. So many people are really, really good. The bad does not outweigh the good, it’s just louder. Our faith in humanity doesn’t have to be tossed in the garbage bin. We know that God is in all and through all. We know that good comes out of bad. We know that faith comes of out weakness, that we can count on the Lord even when it feels like we can’t see him. Because eventually, we will. He is faithful. Christ Evangelical Presbyterian Church in Houston is housing and hosting 100 or so Samaritan’s Purse volunteers for the next several months.

What now? We will move forward in the knowledge that we are being restored, that we are being refined, as a people, as a city, as believers. We will be better, stronger. We have seen adversity and fought our way back. Together. Because we are #HoustonStrong.

One Sports Nation Kicks Off Inaugural Year By Caitlin Richards This fall Katy area families have the opportunity to experience a new youth sports organization – One Sports Nation. After years of working in corporate human resources and recruitment, Robert Rice decided he was ready for a career change and it led to bringing One Sports Nation to Katy. “I wanted to do something fun, I could make a living on and do something for the community,” Rice said. “I have a sports background with running track in college and playing basketball, football and track at the high school level. I’ve also coached all three of my boys in their various sports throughout the years. So I wanted to do something along those lines.” After researching several different options, Rice thought One Sports Nation would not only be a great fit for his new career, but for the Katy community as well. In March of 2017, Rice officially became the One Sports Nation – Katy franchise owner. “The organization is about developing kids for the next level of competition whether it be within the [One Sports Nation] sports programs or getting them prepared for high school sports, all while keeping them excited about sports,” Rice said. “That really spoke to me about the organization.” Youth will have the option to play in either the Grid Iron Flag

Football league or the Full Court Legends Basketball league for the inaugural fall season. Starting in January, the organization plans to offer the One Cup Soccer league along with the football and basketball leagues. All youth ages five to 15 are welcome to join the league. Teams will be coed and the games will take place at Dean Leaman Junior High School. This year’s season kicks off on Saturday, September 16 and goes through November 4. The mission of One Sports Nation is to deliver a positive youth sports experience through better coaching, better player development, and keeping families excited about youth sports. From the equipment to training materials and the added atmosphere activities, One Sports Nation will be a unique experience for the youth and their families to participate in. “We are competitive but it is really about developing and teaching kids the game,” Rice said. “If parents want to get their kids involved in learning how to play the game, stay active from a physical standpoint and have a great time while doing it - One Sports Nation is the program for you.” Youth will have fully NFL and NBA branded uniforms and equipment to enhance their playing experience. Additionally, the game day atmosphere includes energetic music and more than your average concession stand food. “When we actually start the football games there will be NFL themed music at kickoff,” Rice said. “Kids will be able to get that neat experience as the music is played throughout the games.” Each week, youth will be spotlighted as a player of the week with their photo and name being shown in an ESPN-style cartoon video shown before the games. “It will be pretty cool for the kids to see,” Rice said. “We want to make sure they are happy and excited about coming to play.” One Sports Nation doesn’t stop there to create a one of a kind game day experience. Parents also have the opportunity to get involved through halftime showdowns like a free throw contests, and punt, pass and kick contests. “The type of atmosphere we hope to create is not just for the kids but also for the parents,” Rice said. “We want to engage parents at their children’s events with activities they can participate. We want them to have a fun too.” One Sports Nation not only wants to be a way for the youth of Katy to get involved in the community, but they want to be active in the various organizations and events in the Katy area as well. They are members of the Fulshear Chamber of Commerce and are currently active sponsors in the PTOs for Randolph Elementary, Huggins Elementary, and Leaman Jr. High “I have spent a lot of time on developing relationships in the community,” Rice said. “We want to be known in the Katy are for being active in the community and contributing to make it a better place.” 58 • For Advertising Information, Call (281) 741-8317 • www.KatyChristianMagazine.com

One Sports Nation is also a contributor to several local charities, including Caring for Katy which supports cancer survivors. They have also been sponsors for Cross Creek Ranch’s Fourth of July event and the Fulshear Freedom Fest. Thanks to the generous sponsors of One Sports Nation they have been able to give a few scholarships for youth to participate in the One Sports Nation leagues. Dick’s Sporting Goods, Urgent Care, Fulshear Modern Dentists and C2 Education are a few of the 2017 sponsors. “We want to bring on sponsors who share the same values as us,” Rice said. “They will be at our events to help promote education, good dental hygiene, safety and an active lifestyle.” One Sports Nation also has opportunities for youth older than 15 years old to get involved. Rice plans to employ high school students from the local high schools to serve as officials for the league. Interested students should contact Rice at 832-974-0068. Registration for the 2017 fall season leagues is already closed. However, registration will open later this year for the 2018 winter season with football, basketball and soccer league options available. “We are excited about kicking off the first year,” Rice said. “We hope all of the kids and their parents have a great time and develop their skills along the way.”

Church and Counseling Partnership Gives Hurting Locals Hope, Help By Jessa McClure As the Greater Houston community attempts to rise from the ashes of an area ravaged by Hurricane Harvey, there will be an increasing need for counseling as people rebuild their lives. Bear Creek Counseling Center and STCH Ministries are working together to o help this devastated group one session at a time by offering counseling at no cost to families. “When you are in crisis, you don’t know how you’re going to respond,” said Charny Beck, STCH Ministries Director of Counseling for Houston. “When you lose your home, you feel vulnerable and violated. It is a difficult emotion to overcome. We’ve already seen a couple of clients that have experienced tragic events during the flood.” The counselor, who is one of three professionals at the location at Bear Creek Baptist Church in Katy, said that she expects more people to seek help in the

next couple of weeks as they begin put the pieces of their life back and get back to their “new normal.”

“Sometimes people just need someone safe to talk to,” Beck said. “That might be all they need and we are happy to do that.” Although the counselors, who are staff members of STCH Ministries, are pleased to be a sounding board for those rebuilding after the hurricane, they also offer encouragement and help for many different issues. “We offer counseling for teenagers and adults, marriage counseling, play therapy and anything related to families,” she said. “We do ask that if someone is actively in an addiction that they find a treatment program first. Then we will be happy to offer counseling alongside that treatment plan.” The center’s counselors see up to 65 clients a week, and there’s already a short waiting list for those who are seeking the services that are provided at no cost to families. Beck believes providing

donation-based counseling to families who would not normally be able to afford services is a great blessing to people in the community. Because the counseling center is Christian-based, the counselors can be a blessing spiritually as well as financially. “We [the counselors] are all Christians first as well as trained Christian counselors,” she said. “We integrate Biblical principles and scripture into our counseling, but you do not have to be a Christian to receive counseling through us. We are respectful of people’s beliefs and where they are in their walk in their relationship with God.”

Although the center is unique in its approach to counseling, Beck believes that she and the other counselors are a part of the larger counseling community in the Houston area. “We’re just happy to be a part of the community, and to be able to offer assistance to people,” she said. She hopes that those who are struggling will seek help from a counselor because she has seen counseling change lives. “Sometimes counseling or therapy has a bit of a negative connotation to people. People are afraid of someone knowing so much about them. It really can help people if they put the work into it,” Beck said. “I just encourage people to pick up the phone and call and ask for help and give the counselor a chance to invest and encourage them.” For more information about the counseling offered through Bear Creek Baptist Church and STCH Ministries, or to make an appointment, call (361) 575-5151 or visit www.STCHM.org/FC.
