Does God involve Himself in the selection of political leaders including the President of the United States? Every human organization rises and falls on the quality of its leadership. Nations rise and fall on their heads of State. If the CEO is effective, corporations prosper. If he or she is ineffective they go bankrupt. Coaches make or break Athletic teams. In the same way, the godliness, power, and influence of the Church rise and fall on the drive, example, and gifts of its leaders. Leadership is God’s gift to his people. The Bible records that Nebuchadnezzar, a powerful ruler over the Babylonian Empire 500 years before Christ, received a vision from God. The prophet Daniel interpreted this dream. Daniel explained that God gave Nebuchadnezzar this vision “… in order that the living may know that the Most High rules in the kingdom of men, gives it to whomever He will, and sets over it the lowest of men” (Daniel 4:17). As implied in Daniel’s words, Nebuchadnezzar was not a nice man. He threw people alive into hot furnaces if they didn’t bow to his idol. He threatened all of his advisors with mass murder if they didn’t interpret his dream. America has never experienced such a violent ruler. Yet, the Bible clearly shows that at times God will place really bad leaders in positions of great power for the explicit purpose of fulfilling His plans. This was certainly true of the Pharaoh of the Exodus whose heart God hardened time after time until Egypt was humbled for its evil treatment of God’s people, Israel. God sent Moses to tell Pharaoh: “…indeed for this purpose I have raised you up, that I may show My power in you, and that My name may be declared in all the earth” (Exodus 9:16). God has also been directly involved in elevating individuals to very prominent positions on other occasions. He inspired the prophet Isaiah to announce far in advance the rise to power of Cyrus the Great to fulfill His purpose (Isaiah 45:1). It was a century and half later when God gave Cyrus power over the Persian Empire. Cyrus acknowledged God’s purpose for his life by sending a royal proclamation throughout his empire: “All the kingdoms of the earth the Lord God of heaven has given me. And He has commanded me to build Him a house at Jerusalem which is in Judah. Who is among you of all His people? May the Lord his God be with him, and let him go up!” (2 Chronicles 36:23). Students of Bible prophecy also know that in the last days God will even allow a religious figure called “the man of sin” to be empowered by Satan. Through skillful deception this man will pretend to be God and deceive many into worshipping him (2 Thessalonians 2:1-12). I don’t know how this election will go, but this I know… God is in control. Making a Splash – Simone Manuel By Caitlin Richards Who knew a little girl from Sugar Land, Texas would one day become an Olympic gold medalist and make history in the swimming pool. At 20 years old, Simone Manuel swam at the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil for Team USA and made some major waves. At the Olympics, Simone tied for gold in the 100-meter individual freestyle, anchored the 400meter medley relay gold medal winning team, earned silver in the 50-meter individual freestyle, and swam for the silver 400-meter freestyle relay team. “I had a great time in Rio at my first Olympics,” Simone said. “I don’t think I could have enjoyed my first experience anymore than I did. It was such an honor to be a part of team USA, and probably the greatest team at the Olympics.” Simone’s 100-meter individual freestyle gold medal made her the first African American woman to win an individual gold medal in swimming. Her 100-meter, gold medal-winning swim also set an Olympic Record and American Record in the event. “Watching everybody swim so fast inspired me

to do the same,” Simone said. “I was lucky enough to be able to do that.” It is safe to say Simone made not only Team USA proud, but her hometown proud too. Simone has been on a whirlwind since arriving back from Rio in late August. She participated in Arthur Ashe Kids’ Day among other events around the country. Simone said out of all the things she has done after coming back from the Olympics, so far participating in Arthur Ashe Kids’ Day has been one of her favorites. Arthur Ashe Kid’s Day is an annual event that precedes the U.S. Open Tennis Championship in New York. The event is a coming together of chart-topping performers, celebrities

Baseball Legend Nolan Ryan Says... “When we replaced our windows with the Simonton windows, they blended with the house really well. We like the insulating factor that we get, especially in Texas, with the heat we have in the summertime and the drop in temperature that we get in the winter. The windows we had previously didn’t hold up well and didn’t do the job that we wanted from an insulating factor. Ruth chose the color, and we were really pleased with the way they turned out because we had a darker window before.”

and athletes to celebrate the life and values of the tennis legend and humanitarian, Arthur Ashe. Simone enjoyed being a part of Arthur Ashe’s vision of helping kids be healthy, active and to get involved in a sport. “Getting kids into swimming and to learn how to swim, and being able to take pictures with some of those children and them telling me that I am an inspiration to them means a lot,” Simone said, “because that is where it all starts and that is when you figure out your dreams.” That’s when it all started for Simone too. Simone and her family knew at a young age swimming was going to be a big part of her life. It started with local swim competitions and grew to international competitions. Eventually, leading her to swim collegiately for Stanford University and for the USA Swimming National Team. It hasn’t all been roses and medals though. Simone has had her fair share of trials and challenges along the way. Her family and her faith got her through it all though. “My faith has extremely impacted my swimming career, especially this year,” Simone said. “I had a lot of ups and downs and wondering why it had to happen this year, but I never gave up and was able to achieve all of the goals I had set out for myself.” These challenges had to do with her performance in Russia at the 2015 International Swimming Federation (FINA) World Championships, and not getting the best times in one of her events - the 100-meter freestyle - for the past two years. “I just leaned on God the whole time, kept working hard and kept believing that something good was going to come out of it and it did,”

Simone said. A lot of good has come out of what Simone has done and even more good will continue to follow. As an Olympic gold medalist, she hopes to inspire kids to get into the sport of swimming and learn how to be water safe, all while helping USA Swimming reach its goal of diversifying the sport. Simone wouldn’t be where she is today though without the support

of her family. They are the ones who have encouraged and guided her throughout her swimming career, and also her faith. Attending church together has always been important to the Manuel family. When she is at home, they attend every Sunday; except for when they are at Simone’s swim meets or her brothers’ basketball games when they were still playing competitively. “We just really depend on God in every aspect of our life, whether it was me deciding what college I was going to or me praying before every one of my races,” Simone said. “We just depend on God in every little situation in our life and every big situation in our life.”

The Manuel family prays with one another and encourages one another in their faith. It’s what keeps them so close and strong no matter what they going through or doing - even the Olympics. Fellow teammate, Katie Ledecky said the way Simone keeps her faith at the center of her life is inspiring. Katie shared that different quotes and

bible passages inspire Simone and her faith is what keeps Simone focused. “She has been given a great gift from God,” Katie said. “She wants to carry it out and do the best she can every time she is in the pool. It is really inspiring to see.” Simone is an inspiration to many but she still thinks of herself as a girl from Sugar Land, Texas. Even while being named an honorary captain of the Houston Texans pre-season game against the Arizona Cardinals, she still couldn’t believe how many people stood to cheer for her. “I get surprised,” Simone said. “I don’t know why I get surprised but I am just like ‘all of these people are cheering for me?’ All of it is a little bit of a surprise still to me.” Simone has been praised all around the country, as she should be. Her family and hometown couldn’t be any prouder of her either. Despite all of the medals, Simone still would of have had something to be proud of. “Whatever way I would of performed [at the Olympics], I still would have been proud of myself,” Simone said. “I worked hard all year. Sometimes the results don’t show, but you just have to keep trying and never give up. At the end of the day you are proud of yourself because you worked hard.” Some athletes go through a post-Olympic let down, but Simone said that is not her. She feels fortunate to have had an incredible Olympic experience and be a part of the 2016 USA Swimming National Team. Perhaps, what keeps her going the most is knowing this isn’t the end, but just the beginning. “I’m very excited to go back to Stanford and reach some goals with the team, reach some goals individually and just get back into college swimming,” Simone said. After graduating from Fort Bend Austin High School in 2014, Simone was recruited to attend Stanford University and be a part of one of the top nationally ranked collegiate programs in the country. As a freshman, she was a four-time national champion in the 50-yard freestyle, 100-yard freestyle, 400-yard freestyle relay and 400-yard medley

relay. During the 2015-2016 collegiate swim season, Simone was redshirted as a sophomore so she could train for the Olympic Games. She can’t wait to get back in the pool for this year’s season. With Simone’s success, she could have chosen to take her career professionally but she still had some goals to reach. “I just didn’t want to have regrets,” Simone said. “To me it’s not all about the money, the endorsements or all of those other factors that go a

long with it. I wasn’t on the team this year and I want to go back to those relationships… I want to be a part of that team aspect again, and go back to school the whole year and enjoy my college experience…because those are the most important things to me, [they] keep me grounded and really keep me going.” Simone has already made some major waves in the pool and outside of the pool, but she isn’t done. According to swimtoday.org, a USA Swimming website used to find a swim team, in the four days following Simone’s gold in the 100-meter freestyle there were 23,210 searches, which equaled twothirds of the total searches for the 2014 calendar year. The same day Simone won the gold in the pool in Rio she also won the day on social media. Compared to Michael Phelps, Simone gained over 56,000 more mentions than Michael following her 100-meter freestyle gold. No matter how many gold medals Simone brings home one thing is for sure. She has made a name for herself and her hometown proud. Sugar Land, along with everyone else in the country can’t wait to see what else Simone is yet to do.

Teen Body Image Doesn’t Have to be a Weighty Issue By Dr. Rebecca Deurlein I recently read an article circulating on Facebook that has gathered quite a bit of steam. It is a letter from a young woman to her mother about her self-esteem issues arising from repeatedly hearing her mother disparage her own body. As she explains, she thought her mother was beautiful, but her mother lived in a world of dieting, negative self-talk, and disappointment. Not only was it disheartening for the daughter; it also caused her to repeat the same cycle when she got older. We know that teens, especially, are under a constant barrage of pressures to have certain body types. They get it from advertisements of every sort, parents, friends, boyfriends/girlfriends - virtually everywhere they turn. Their very different bodies make them susceptible to constant comparisons. I’ve had students who were so petite they had to shop in the children’s section. I’ve had female athletes with muscular thighs that precluded them (they thought) from wearing the ever-popular yoga pants. Males are just as hard on themselves in the comparison department. I’ve noticed teen male athletes that run the gamut from 120 lbs to 220 lbs. Boys and girls in various stages of development, some looking like children and some like grown adults, roam the hallways, all surveying one

another and asking themselves how they size up. Introduce the hunks and beauties from the entertainment world, and teenagers really don’t stand a chance when it comes to avoiding comparisons of body type. And that’s actually a good thing. Because if your children reach high school and haven’t learned to be their own people yet, I’m here to tell you, it’s okay. They have time. It’s not too late. In fact, I would say that they’re probably exactly where they should be emotionally. Scary, yes, but

developmentally, quite correct. BUT - and this is a big BUT - now is the time to help your teenager discover his or her true self. These are the years when most kids begin to realize that it’s okay to be different. That their peers (not all of them, but a good number) will accept them for their individuality. That their friends are becoming mature enough to appreciate them for what they do well and ignore the parts that don’t matter. This is the time when confidence reigns supreme and they realize that they will do much better in life if they present themselves with assuredness rather than timidity. Parents are positively key when it comes to this transition. No, you can’t tell them how great they are because you’re their parents and of course you think they’re great. That actually carries little weight with them. Instead, look to yourself and reflect on the messages you send your kids. I had a grandmother who was quite body conscious and always aware of her appearance. Of course, she was conscious of our appearance as well, and had no problem commenting on our changing bodies, our acne, and all the other imperfections that we can either accept or agonize over.

Looking back, I now recognize her comments more as a reflection of her own self-doubt than anything else. She didn’t feel good about herself, so she unknowingly transferred that insecurity onto us. So ask yourself – am I projecting my own issues with body image on my kids? Am I sending them the message that what’s on the outside is more important than what’s on the inside? Instead, model confidence and self-acceptance to your children. Refuse to criticize your own body. Let your conversations focus on your job successes, an obstacle you overcame, your pride in an accomplishment, your intense drive to reach a goal. Do the same when you speak of other people, rather than focusing and commenting on their looks. When you praise your kids, praise specific accomplishments. It’s certainly okay to be attractive and it’s fine to acknowledge that, but the vast majority of your compliments should target other, more substantial areas of strength that your kids can actually control. That’s where true self-esteem should come from. In a nutshell, note your own, their, and other’s successes of substance, not superficiality. In that way, you will grow young adults with strong, positive priorities who understand and convey to the world that they are so much more than their weight or body type. B&B Butchers and Restaurant Becomes Title Sponsor of Resurrection Run Katy By Caitlin Richards Faith West is teaming up with Katy/Fort Bend Christian Magazines to hold their first annual Katy Resurrection Run on Good Friday, April 14, 2017. The two longstanding community partners aren’t doing it alone though. B&B Butchers and Restaurant is joining their cause by being the title sponsor for the event. “We are excited to offer an event like this in Katy,” Joseph Menslage, Katy/Fort Bend Christian Magazines publisher and Katy Resurrection Run founder said. “Having B&B join us in our cause makes it even more exciting and gives us hope that the event will be even more of a success.” B&B Butchers and Restaurant features a firstclass neighborhood butcher shop that is popularly found in New York and a restaurant with an oldfashioned steakhouse menu. Benjamin Berg, B&B Butchers & Restaurant proprietor, is originally from New York and wanted to bring a dining spot like B&B to Houston. “Houston has been extremely good to our business and my family,” Berg said. “As a New Yorker, it is hard to find a new home but Houston has definitely been a great transition in our lives.” B&B opened in May of 2015 and is fashioning a reputation of not only excellent steak and cuisine, but also of giving. During the Houston Restaurant Weeks benefiting the Houston Food Bank, B&B raised enough funds to set the record for the largest single donation from a restaurant. “Giving back to organizations like this and getting involved in the

community is extremely important to us,” Berg said. “The community has done so much for us with their support and we want to give back.” By partnering with Faith West and Katy/Fort Bend Christian Magazines, B&B will be supporting the many organizations Faith West’s Eagle Initiative supports. The Eagle Initiative is Faith West’s outreach to the community where they give Faith West camp and school scholarships, and partner with numerous community organizations to make a difference. “Faith West is all about community,” Kirk Rightmire, Faith

West public relations director said. “However we can, whether it is through education, outreach, connecting businesses and churches, or brining people together it has always been our goal to be a force in the community to benefit the people of Katy.” Organizations the Eagle Initiative benefits include Caring 4 Katy, Good Shepherd, Sunshine Kids, and Sunshine Thru the Rain. The Eagle Initiative’s impact is far reaching as some of the organizations benefit children and families from downtown Houston to the greater area. “We’ve never done anything to raise money for the Eagle Initiative before,” Rightmire said. “We’ve always reached out to business leaders in the community, churches and the Faith West families to support it. So we hope to make an even greater difference in the community with the funds raised from the event.” Through the Eagle Initiative Faith West is able to open its many facilities like Camp West and Lake West to community organizations at no cost to host events and activities. This includes events like a Christmas experience for children within Child Protective Services (CPS) and a CPS adoption day where adoptions increased by 400%. Camp Bow Wow Owners Have a Passion for Pooches and Their Owners By Jessa McClure When Jose Morillo and his wife Joan decided to adopt a long-haired Chihuahua named Taco, they had no idea that this new member of the family was going to inspire big change in their lives. For 17 years, Jose worked in the healthcare field, first as a physical therapist, and then as a CEO of a hospital in Florida. After many years in corporate America, the father of one decided that he wanted a new adventure. “As I was figuring out my next move, we got our little puppy, Taco,” Morillo said. “We looked at several places where he could go when we were working. A Camp Bow Wow had opened up where lived. I just fell in love with it, and said, this what I want to do when I grow up.” Morillo had always wanted to start his own business, and with a new passion for caring for dogs, Camp Bow Wow seemed like the perfect fit. But because there was already a Camp Bow Wow in their area, Morillo wondered where to begin his business. “My wife and all of her family are from Houston,” he said. “And when I started my physical therapy career in 1987, I started

in Victoria, so I knew about Katy. So, I said, why not move to Katy?” So, the couple packed up their belongings and their buddy Taco, and found a new home in Texas. It wasn’t long before Morillo was out making a name for Camp Bow Wow, and meeting fellow dog lovers. “I did a lot of marketing in the beginning, but basically my biggest role now is networking,” he said. “I get to know as many people as I possibly can and make them understand that Camp Bow Wow is a good option for them.” The business is part doggie daycare and part overnight boarding facility. It offers air conditioned play areas and cameras where “mom and dad” can check on their “baby,” during the day. “Dogs are like family to people,” Morillo said. “They have to be able to trust me. I hope they feel that with every encounter.” Morillo started out with just a couple of employees, but now has a marketing director, a general manager and numerous camp counselors and certified trainers to make every dog’s stay a safe and enjoyable one. Camp Bow Wow also offers training and grooming services as well. The facility’s owner knows the care each furry family member receives is important to his or her loved ones, so it is important to be meticulous in every aspect of that care. “I run [Camp Bow Wow] like a hospital,” he said. “We use hospital solutions for cleaning everything, and we use some of the same methodologies when it comes to medication administration.” Morillo’s wife Joan also values structure when it comes to their business because she was a Major in the Air Force during the second Iraq War. She is also a pharmacist, which helps with medical administration

as well. But her medical skills are just part of why Joan is so important to the business. “Had it not been for her, I wouldn’t have been able to step out and [start the business],” he said. “With her support and love, I was able to do that.” Morillo believes building strong relationship is not only important in his home, but also with his customers and their dogs. “I use a quote that says, ‘be the person your dog thinks you are,’” he said. “It’s a good way to live your life. So, every day, I strive towards that goal.” Morillo hopes that his passion for his business shows pet owners that it is okay to take that well-deserved vacation. “We’re going to do everything possible to make sure that you can [take that trip] and not worry about your baby,” he said. If you are interested in what Camp Bow Wow for the services they provide, please call them at (281) 849-3647 or visit their website at www.campbowwow.com/katy.

The New Dentists in Town By Dr. Rebecca Deurlein Katy Star Dental is proud to announce its grand opening in Katy at the corner of FM 1463 and Spring Green Boulevard. The office, headed by Dr. Farhad Shirazian, specializes in general, family, and cosmetic dentistry, and offers a wide range of services for all ages. Dr. Shirazian has been practicing for more than 18 years and also operates another successful practice in Houston – North Star Dental Center. When asked, Dr. Shirazian said that he moved to Katy because he loved the area and wants to become part of the community. “My favorite thing about being a dentist is the opportunity to help people improve their health and smile,” Shirazian said. Katy Star Dental’s dentists perform all of the treatments expected from professionals, including crowns, root canals, dentures, and TMJ solutions. If surgery becomes a necessity, Katy Star’s oral surgeons use the latest techniques to minimize or eliminate pain and protect patient health and well-being. While family dentists offer a variety of services and practice general dentistry, Katy Star Dental offers something unique – pediatric dentistry. This specialized service concentrates on the individualized needs of

children as their teeth progress from baby to adult. Pediatric dentists are able to diagnose emerging problems and solve them before they become major adult dental issues. And perhaps just as importantly, these dentists are trained to provide a comfortable, non-intimidating atmosphere for kids so they don’t grow into adults who fear their dental appointments.

Lifting Spirits, Changing Lives By Dr. Rebecca Deurlein Education is a touchy subject and everyone seems to have an opinion about it. Private or public? Small or large? Faithbased or secular? The only thing most people can agree on is that education is individual, that one size doesn’t fit all, and that “fit” matters when choosing the right school for your kids. Jean Pickering and Marlene Thompson, two lifelong educators who served in almost every capacity in various educational environments, recognize the need for choice. They wanted to build a school that served a special segment of the population and provided individual attention. They wanted to build a school that was a safe haven for students. And they wanted to build a school that took the best from public, private, and charter schools and left behind the worst. They opened the doors to Capstone Classical Academy eight years ago in Old Katy and welcomed their first four students. Now, less than a decade later, they’ve enrolled up to 55 students a year, and with open enrollment year-round, they continue to build their student base. Their students represent a wide range of learners. Some seek a safe environment free of bullying and negative peer pressure. Some have highfunctioning autism and are brilliant students who need a less stressful social environment. Some simply crave smaller classes and individualized

instruction they could not receive in a huge public school. All are in grades 5-12 and enjoy a 1:10 teacher-student ratio, so it’s safe to say that they know each other’s names and enjoy a family atmosphere in their school environment. Pickering, who is Director of the Academy, explained, “Public school works for a lot of students, but one size doesn’t fit all anymore. Teaching

and learning at Capstone is like it used to be back in the 70’s. Everything is so much smaller with less pressure, which works for a lot of students, not all.”

Within the classroom, Capstone gets its Classical Academy title because it uses the classical model of teaching around a Harkness table. Every classroom is fitted with a round table where students gather in a circle to discuss the day’s lesson. The teacher does not lecture and does not stand in front of the room leading the lesson. Instead, the kids use the Socratic

Method to learn by discussing, discovering, hearing others’ viewpoints, adjusting their own, and developing understanding. The teacher guides and facilitates, but the students do the hard work applying critical thinking skills to their tasks. Capstone also takes a unique approach to homework. While many schools see homework as a necessary component to learning and even brag about the number of hours their students spend on at-home study, Capstone provides time in the school day for self-directed enrichment work. Their philosophy is that kids need time at home to rest, spend time with their family, and be involved in extracurricular activities. They do not need to study all day and then go home to study more. Likewise, Capstone operates a Monday-Thursday schedule, and their smaller class sizes and individualized attention allow students to cover the same amount of material within a 4-day week. Since they meet with each class twice a week and follow a syllabus for their assignments, they learn time management and get an excellent feel for what college will require. In fact, Capstone requires more credit hours than the state requires, yet every weekend is a 3-day weekend for these students, and they appreciate it! “I had a parent refer to us as a home school on steroids,” explained Pickering, “because in addition to our unique schedule, we provide comfort for our kids. They bring their own chairs and blankets and make themselves comfortable while they’re here. In this way, the kids feel a part of their education.” Thomas shared a story that illustrates the close-knit nature of the Academy. “We took in a new 7th grader who had been in her previous school since 2nd grade. She was nervous and convinced she would be unhappy at Capstone. I made her and her parents a promise that by the end of the week she would love it. And by the end of that very day, she

was smiling and in love with our school. That same child advanced so quickly that she was taking upperclassmen classes by 9th grade. In her own words, ‘Anything is possible at Capstone.’” While the school does not offer the AP program, it does provide Honors classes and a close relationship with Houston Community College, located within walking distance of Capstone. Students may take Dual Enrollment courses not at their high school, as most do, but at HCC in actual college classes. Five to six students a year take advantage of this opportunity. One of last year’s graduates left Capstone with 36 college semester hours already complete upon high school graduation and is now majoring in business. Capstone is able to challenge its students academically without spending time on standardized test preparation or allowing the state to dictate which tests must be taken and passed. Instead, all students take Aspire as part of the ACT as a way to measure progress and guide teachers toward better instructional methods. Capstone doesn’t even make prospective students take an admissions test. “If students want to be here, we want them here,” said Pickering. A member of the National Association of Private Schools, Capstone employs fully certified teachers, most of whom came from the public school system and felt the need for change in the way they teach and interact with students. The small staff of nine brought with them the best methods and strategies in their experience and left behind the elements of education that often frustrate teachers. Located in a business complex on Park Rd, Capstone keeps expenses down by occupying a 12,000 sq ft space with junior high and high school in separate sections of the suite. They’ve never advertised until now, attributing their success to “word of mouth and divine intervention.” Capstone is a faith-based school but does not teach religion and is not affiliated with any one denomination. Instead, faith is expressed through their motto:

Manners, morals, and motivation. They have an Honor Code, not a discipline code. And all of their seniors take a Christian Ethics class to prepare them for the larger world they are about to enter.

Price is another point of pride for the school. “We have the lowest tuition of any private school in the area at $8,620 per year. A lot of parents cannot afford the price of private school, so we provide a unique educational experience for parents who need their child in a smaller setting but don’t want to have to take out a loan to pay for it,” Pickering said. She added with a smile, “We have been called the best kept secret in Katy.” And for many, Capstone is just that. If you are interested in what Capstone Classical Academy can offer to your child, please call them at (832) 314-1400 or visit their website athttp://www.cca-edu.com.

Mexican Pizza? Si! By Caitlin Richards A new Mexican pizzeria has arrived in Katy, and it is definitely something to talk about. Carlos Ayala opened El Canton Pizzeria in February on S Mason Road, and business has been booming ever since. One could argue that it’s due to the authenticity of the pizza; Carlos brought his recipes from Guadalajara Mexico, where he worked in the pizza industry for six years. That first location is still running, but Carlos was inspired to start another location in Katy. The inspiration came from an unusual place. “I took a long working holiday in New Zealand, Vancouver, and London working in the vineyards, restaurants, and construction sites. When I returned, I was ready for a new experience where I could bring all that I had learned into a new restaurant in Texas,” said Ayala. And Ayala has. El Canton blends Mexican flavors with traditional Italian dishes. They cook and smoke their pizzas and other dishes in a wood-fired oven built in Mexico. It’s not surprising that pizza is their most popular item on the menu. Their most requested specialty pizza is the Meatlover with their special sauce, mozzarella cheese, Italian sausage, chorizo, ground beef, bacon and – wait for it – jam!

Honor@Home: Learning to Love Your Mate By Pastor Jorge H Cardenas We are all a little weird and life’s a little weird, and when we find someone whose weirdness is compatible with ours, we join up with them and fall in mutual weirdness and call it love. - Dr. Seuss Everyone is born with a divine innate desire to love and to be loved. Unfortunately, some people from the moment they are conceived to the time they are born come into this world with a painful sense of rejection. For those, it is naturally difficult to accept or express love. Regardless the environment in which we come into this world, we all must continue to learn to love beyond painful experiences. Life itself is a continuous quest for healing. Our healing process depends first in our relationship with our loving Father in heaven, secondly with the way we relate to others, and thirdly in the manner in which we see and value ourselves. Marriage is one of many avenues which offers us the opportunity to develop together with another person in the quest to give and receive love. Consequently, we must accept that love is a continuous learning curve. Every day we encounter opportunities to learn, express and to share this godly gift. We should opt to pursue this learning curve as we walk with that special one, our lifetime partner. No matter how much two people have in common, individuals will have their distinctive differences. This distinctiveness is to be

celebrated. Thank God we all have our differences, otherwise life will be tasteless and boring. Differences are designed to complement and enrich

a relationship. As long as such differences have their moral boundaries, then they should be respected, welcomed, and expected.

Real love has no hidden agendas. The magnitude of honesty will be a clear indicator of the relationship’s health. Marriage is the unique platform where one as a person exposes their soul, mind and spirit in total openness. The curtain of fear of exposure must be removed if we are willing

to have a real, meaningful, and honest relationship. Sharing a lifetime with another soul, requires lots of love covered with lots of patience. It also calls for a deeper level of self-vulnerability. That is why love has a major sacrificial component: You must surrender all selfish behavior. There is no room for selfishness if you want your relationship to succeed. One’s ego must be subdued, it must be scrutinized without losing self-identity nor individuality. Love is a continuous learning path. That is why we need to depend on our loving Father in heaven to guide, share and express our love. He is the Author of the perfect love. Love is the umbrella that will cover a marriage in both sunny and rainy days. Love is the glue that holds a couple together beyond life’s tribulations. As couples face challenges, the determination to respond with an attitude of love will be the difference of overcoming enduring obstacles. This learning curve keeps a marriage intact. Every matrimony must agree on continuing to learn to love one another in every season. Just remember, no one is an expert on love, except God. Accordingly, the Bible is very explicit about the nature and origin of love. In fact, the Bible is a love letter inspired by the Holy Spirit. Discover ways to continue to learn to love your spouse based on Godly principles by reading and applying the Word of God. And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity. Colossians 3:14

Pastor Leads Church With a Financial Mind By Jessa McClure Growing up, Rev. Dean Pogue, was immersed in the culture and liturgy of the Presbyterian Church. He was so involved in fact, that he was ordained as an elder of Memorial Drive Presbyterian Church before he graduated from high school. “I’ve done a lot of things in the church; from teaching Sunday school to working as a camp cook for youth retreats to becoming a youth director to consulting on Session retreats. For years I was a ‘semi-pro’ in the Presbyterian Church,” Pogue said. But although Pogue had a love for ministry, he didn’t respond to God’s call to full-time ordained ministry until much later in life. After graduating from Memorial High in 1973, the future pastor left his Houston-area life behind and got his BSc. in geology from Southern Methodist University in Dallas. This degree, along with an MBA in corporate finance from the University of Dallas, gave Pogue the chance to become involved in the oil and gas industry and its financing. “I worked with large financial institutions, and I know how it feels when the price of oil fails and people are laid off,” he said. “I’ve been in oil and gas during economic crises and the ‘boom times.’ Because of that, I can relate to what folks in the pews are feeling.” It was this connection to working men and women along with his passion for ministry that eventually led Pogue to attend Austin Presbyterian Seminary when he was well into his 40s.

After gaining his M.Div. degree, he was ordained and succeeded Harry Slye as the pastor of Grand Lakes Presbyterian Church, a new body of believers with an old-school, “orthodox” way of serving Christ. “We believe that we have a strong history that we shouldn’t ignore,” Pogue said. “That history translates into what we call ‘old school’ worship at 9 a.m. and a transitional worship time at 11 a.m.”

Endorsed by Katy Christian Magazine

The pastor said the first Sunday worship service is indicative of a 1950s church worship service that relies heavy on a Reformed, liturgical style. A piano and small choir lead what’s effectively a small, chapel service. Grand Lake Presbyterian’s second service is a bit more modern, with the inclusion of a mini orchestra of trumpets, clarinets and sometimes violins. But the worship is still very much Reformed in its practice. Pogue said the old-school, liturgical approach unites those who worship, instead

of separating them by the kind of music they like. “We don’t define worship by music,” he said. “It’s defined by the liturgy and the order of worship. Presbyterians have a very distinct Reformed kind of worship.” The pastor, who is in his sixth year at Grand Lakes, said the style of their services helps the parishioners to remember their sole purpose in attending church—to worship the Lord. “I discovered an important lesson from the business world: When you lose sight of your mission and become distracted, your ‘customers’ suffer,” Pogue said. “That’s why we have an intense focus on Jesus.” The pastor is not only passionate about following Christ, but he also desires to empower leaders among the congregation. “In our tradition, the best thing a pastor can do is be around a lot of smart people,” he said.

Debbie’s Maid Service “Yes, We Do Windows” • Weekly / Biweekly Cleaning Services

And although he won’t readily admit it, he is also one of the “smart people,” especially when it comes to finances. “I’ve really focused on the financial aspect that a lot of pastors don’t want to mess with,” he said. The pastor believes that it’s the church’s responsibility to use God’s assets to do His work. That is partly why Grand Lakes has allowed a myriad of non-profits and local ministries to use their facilities for their activities. “We have a Coptic church that meets here,” he said. “They are the Egyptian folks who are being murdered by ISIS. There were a bunch of them in the neighborhood, and they asked if they could worship here on Thursday nights, and now they do.” A Norwegian church, a vocational training program for special needs men and women (“Sweet Heat Jam), and a group that offers counseling all use the space when the Grand Lakes congregation is not. “We want to do ministry, per square foot, per hour,” Pogue said. “We have a lovely facility, and our leaders like to see it humming with ministry.” The facility is not only humming during the week, but it is also vibrant on Sunday, when more than 350 people gather to worship. The church that began at Alexander Elementary School across the street from where it sits now, is located at 6035 South Fry Road in Katy, TX. Pogue is there every week, ready to talk about everything from the books of the Bible to the ins and outs of Texas high school football.

Texas Lions Camp By Caitlin Richards Even though school has started back, summer is still a hot topic of conversation for children. Teachers and friends ask children how they spent their summer and what fun activities they did. Most children will have enthusiastic responses about a family vacation or a camp experience, but not every child will have special summer story to tell. The Texas Lions Camp is doing its part to make sure children with physical disabilities, type-1 diabetes, cancer and Down syndrome have a fun summer story to share, along with much more. “Texas Lions Camp is a camp specifically designed to help children find their calling and for them to walk into who they really are,” Trish Wilson, Texas Lions Camp marketing and public relations director said. Most children with physical disabilities, type-1 diabetes, cancer or Down syndrome aren’t able to attend regular summer camps because of lack of accommodations, cost, or the fear of being different. At Texas Lions Camp, those barriers are never a factor. These children are able to come to the one-week residential camp on 500 acres in the Texas Hill Country and experience everything a child should experience in the summer. From fishing and swimming, to scaling

a climbing wall and riding horses Texas Lions Camp has it all. “They are a kid first and the medical condition they are dealing with is just an after thought,” Wilson said. “Their condition doesn’t define them. Children come and find an even playing field enabling them to do all the things they hear their friends doing, but they haven’t had the opportunity to do until now.” The camp is designed with state of the art facilities to accommodate

the children’s disabilities and medical conditions. As an American Camp Association accredited facility, Texas Lions Camp offers nothing less than the best summer experience for every child. “They are able to step onto our campus and do some of the most incredible things they never thought were possible,” Wilson said. Texas Lions Camp’s facilities and activities are designed to help every child manipulate their circumstances to do a regular activity. Children with no legs can ride a horse and a child who only has one arm and no legs can climb a 30-foot climbing wall. Whatever any child wants to do they can do it. Texas Lions Camp was started back in 1949 as an answer to the polio epidemic that was ravaging the country. The Lions of Texas wanted to be able to offer all children, no matter if their legs were in braces or if they were confined to a wheel chair, the opportunity to still be a kid. The first year of camp all the children had polio. Since then, Texas Lions Camp has added over 150 other disabilities. Over the 67 years they have existed, they’ve had 70,000

children as campers. The children who attend Texas Lions Camp have a variety of disabilities and medical conditions, but the heart of a child is still at the camp’s core. A picturesque, summer camp experience isn’t the only thing Texas Lions Camp offers. Through all of the activities and experiences Texas Lions Camp offers its campers, they are improving their self-image and building their self-confidence. “These children come here and realize they can be a valuable part of their community, their family, and their school,” Wilson said. “They go back home with a new found confidence, an improved self-image and they get involved.” Texas Lions Camp has a ‘can do’ philosophy where the word can’t is never used. If a child isn’t able to do something, they work with the child to figure out what they can do. They try to help the children see their obstacles as opportunities. “It is getting into their mind that ‘can do’ philosophy no matter their situation,” Wilson said. “They may not be able to do it exactly like every else, but they learn there is a way they can do it like no one else.” “They become successful, viable people and step into their roll, their calling, and their piece of who they are going to be because they realize their disabilities do not define them.” At Texas Lions Camp, children come out of their shell, and realize their potential and gifts. This was especially true for one special young lady. Most dancers have beautiful legs and talented feet, but what if you don’t have feet?

One such camper, Paulina faced this challenge. She is a double-leg amputee from the knees down and wears prosthetic legs that she navigates well in. However, when she dances she foregoes her prosthetics. “She is one of the best dancers I have ever seen,” Wilson said. “I was

stunned by this young lady and her talent.” Paulina wants to make dancing her vocation and is on her way to

doing so. After watching her dance, Wilson told her she wanted to ask her a question. The young girl responded, ‘you want to know why I took off my legs? Wilson said yes. The young starry-eyed camper replied, ‘sometimes you have to take off what the world gives you in order to be what you were created to be.’ She knew she was a dancer. She just needed a stage to prove it. “At Texas Lions Camp they find out who they really are,” Wilson said. “There are a lot of things that Texas Lions Camp is, but basically it is the blank canvas and the children come in and paint the masterpiece of who they are.” Texas Lions Camp provides children with the tools they need to build their life and discover who they want to become. This ranges from diabetes education for children with type-1 diabetes to instilling the confidence to do anything for children with disabilities. “It is a tremendous blessing to be able to be a part of that and watch them do it,” Wilson said. Texas Lions Camp is not only changing these children’s lives but making the lives of their families better too. By having a place for these children to come to, families can be refreshed, renewed and rejuvenated. “They come back so much more in love with that child,” Wilson said. “They don’t realize how much that child brings to their family until they aren’t there for a week.” As an added bonus to what Texas Lions Camp offers these families, their children are able to attend camp at no cost. The costs for these families are already high to care for their children. Through the over 900 Lions Clubs across Texas, each child’s cost to attend is covered.

Facilitating camp wouldn’t be possible without the counselors, staff, volunteers, Texas Lions Clubs, and generous donors. Each year these groups of people give back through their time and money to make summer dreams come true. For opportunities to donate, volunteer or become a counselor visit lionscamp.com. The applications for 2017 camp open on January 3, 2017. Online applications are available at lionscamp.com under application. Online applications are preferred, although paper applications are available for download in February 2017. Application materials include the application, a doctor waiver and a Texas Lion sponsor. For children to attend, they must have a qualifying disability. Disabilities may be internal or external. For clarification of qualifying disabilities contact the Texas Lions Camp at 830896-8500 or tlc@lionscamp.com. “I work for the best place in the world,” Wilson said. “Texas Lions Camp changes lives and it changes them one at a time.”

A Lie When the Truth Would Do By Gary Gillen It started with a cough. Then the cough became more persistent and was noticed. When the media asked about her health, they were dismissively told to “Get a life!” On a beautiful sunny New York day with temperatures in the 70s, she left an event early. She was overheated they said. Then the video, taken by an unnoticed bystander, surfaced. A clearly unwell candidate collapsing as aides helped her into a van leaving a shoe in the street during the process. This all forced the Hillary Clinton Campaign to do the one thing they did not want to do. Something they instinctively avoid. Tell the truth. Even well-known Democrat David Axelrod, President Obama’s former advisor and Chief of Staff, tweeted, “Antibiotics can take care of pneumonia. What’s the cure for an unhealthy penchant for privacy that repeatedly Serving Katy, Houston, Brookshire, Fulshear, Sealy, Cypress & surrounding areas.

creates unnecessary problems?” He was referring to the seemingly ingrained propensity for the Clinton’s and their sycophants to hide the truth even when the truth would not harm them. I understand why they don’t want us to know about her involvement in the disasterous troop withdrawals in Libya, why she allowed Americans to die in Benghazi without sending any help, why she lied to the families of those brave dead Americans, why she hid her emails in her basement, why she had her server “bleached” so the American people wouldn’t know the truth about her Foundation’s pay to play program, but couldn’t she have been honest to us just this once? You see, they had known she had pneumonia for several days. They knew the media was curious. They knew the American People deserved to know the facts about the health of a person who could be the President of the United States. Yet, as they always do, they dismissed and ignored questions, stalled, delayed and, finally, they lied. On the previous Friday, when she was diagnosed, they could have simply said that she was ill with pneumonia and was being treated and would be on the campaign trail

again in a few days. Hillary could have gotten a “sympathy” bump in the polls. But instead her campaign did what they always do. Perhaps pneumonia can explain her quote at a Barbra Streisand hosted event when she famously called half of Republican Presidential candidate Donald Trump’s supporters a “basket of deplorables” and the other half “are people who feel that the government has let them down, the economy has let them down, nobody cares about them, nobody worries about what happens to their lives and their futures, and they’re just desperate for change. It doesn’t really even matter where it comes from. They don’t buy everything he says, but he seems to hold out some hope that their lives will be different. They won’t wake up and see their jobs disappear, lose a kid to heroin, feel like they’re in a dead end.” The question I have heard no one ask her is this: You claim you will be Obama’s third term, what responsibility do you share for creating the feelings of these hardworking Americans who see the elite left has targeted them. Americans who feel “progressives” are busy dividing our nation along religious, gender and economic lines. Americans who go to work every day to pay their bills and their taxes so that “progressives” like you can dole their hard-earned money out to your “victim” class friends. Americans who want their children to do better but know that the trillions of dollars your party has borrowed will be paid by future generations. Americans who see that their opinions are held in contempt by the very President who has thrown our borders and our wallets open to people who want to harm us. Americans you call deplorables. Why should we trust you? And could we have the truth this time? Gary Gillen owns and operates Gillen Pest Control in Richmond. He is the only person in history to have served on both the Richmond City Commission and the Rosenberg City Council. He was the Chairman of the Republican Party of Fort Bend County 2006-2007. Sugar Land Pastor Follows God’s Calling to Start a Life-Giving Church By Jessa McClure When Pastor Terry Darnell was a sophomore at Texas State University in San Marcos, he felt the Lord’s calling to go into fulltime ministry. After graduation, he and his family moved to Lafayette, LA to work as the youth pastor of Family Life Church. “Everything was going great, and the youth ministry was experiencing incredible growth,” Darnell said. “But after four years I felt the Lord calling me to start a new church.” For several months, Darnell and his wife prayed and sought the Lord about the location of their next ministry venture. They weren’t sure where they should go, but after visiting some friends in the Sugar Land area, started feeling like this was the place God wanted them to be. “We moved here in June of 1999, and we’re about to celebrate our 17th year,” Darnell said. With just two parishioners, the pastor and his wife started what would become Family Life Church. “We started going out into the community and meeting people,” he said. “our first official Sunday

service had 27 people, including children.” After meeting in their home for a month, they began to search for a larger facility that would accommodate their steady growth. “We rented

a Kids R Kids daycare from 1999 to 2006, which meant setting up and tearing down all of our equipment every Sunday for seven years,” Darnell said. In 2006 the church was able to purchase their own land and build their first worship facility. When the first building was complete, the church had around 100 members. But over the next few years, FLC quadrupled in membership, prompting the construction of a larger worship facility that was completed in August of 2015. Family Life continues to grow and reach people in their community who need Jesus. Darnell believes that the growth of the church is based on the welcoming environment he and other ministry leaders help create. “Everybody wants to be loved and accepted, and to feel that they are

valuable,” Darnell said. “I think our church offers this. When you walk through the door, you are greeted. And our services are authentic. We want to teach people that their faith works in their daily lives.” Because of their life-giving approach to ministry, Family Life has attracted people of all ages and cultural backgrounds. “It is just incredible to walk into our church and see the diversity of people who come together to worship,” Darnell said. Sunday morning worship services begin at 10 a.m. and are typically an hour and fifteen minutes in length. Age appropriate classes are provided for children from birth to fifth grade. FLC is located just off McKaskle Road between Old Richmond and Highway 6 at 16425 Old Richmond Road in Sugar Land, TX.

Dear Doctor: Common Knee Injuries in Football Players By Dr. Timothy Noonan Dear Doctor: My son injured his knee in his football game last night. What are common knee injuries in football players? Dear Reader: I am sorry to hear about your son’s injury. There are several injuries that are possible in sports, especially football. Many of these can occur without contact as the foot is planted and the knee twists. An anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tear is a common traumatic injury to the knee. The ACL is a major ligament in the knee that provides stability to the knee especially with pivoting sports. A torn ACL requires surgical reconstruction with tissue from another source. Often this occurs without contact. The athlete can feel or even hear a “pop.” The knee immediately swells with fluid, called an effusion. The athlete can often walk, although with pain. Return to sports is about 6 months. A medial collateral ligament (MCL) tear is another common ligament injury in football players. An MCL tear commonly occurs as the athlete’s foot is planted and an opposing player hits the outside of the knee. The player often feels a tearing sensation. The knee will be sore and swell slightly on the inside of the knee. The athlete will have some pain with walking and some sense of instability. The MCL provides stability to the knee especially in side-to-side motions. A torn MCL can frequently be treated without surgery using a hinged knee brace. Return to sports is 3 to 6 weeks. A torn meniscus is another common knee injury. It often occurs along

with a ligament injury but can occur as an isolated event. The knee has a medial and lateral meniscus. The meniscus is a type of cartilage in the knee that acts as a shock absorber. The meniscus can tear with a twisting, hyper flexion, or hyperextension injury. The knee will swell slightly several hours after the injury. Often the athlete feels a slight pop at the time of injury. The tear will cause the knee to be sore to walk on, often requiring crutches. There may be limitations in knee flexion. A torn meniscus requires surgical treatment with either repair or partial removal of the torn fragment. Return to sports is 4 weeks for meniscus trimming and 10 weeks for meniscus repair. Dr. Timothy M. Noonan is an Orthopaedic Surgeon for the UT Health Science Center at Houston and provides patient care at UT Physicians at Cinco Ranch located at 23923 Cinco Ranch Blvd., Katy, TX 77494.
