Autumn greetings! Cooler weather is visiting Katy and the signs of October and November are upon us. As we enjoy fall festivals and look forward to Thanksgiving, we also face an election year like no other. I hope you enjoy our fall issue, filled with interesting editorial across the spectrum. We visit with a renowned couple of professional gymnasts. We interview a presidential candidate from the heart of our own community. We learn of the inspiring Christian roots of a boot camp. We include a profile of a pastor who is also an author. And we share a retrospective of the first Thanksgiving. It is with a spirit of Thanksgiving that we’ll navigate toward November and the celebratory nature of feasting and festivities. With our loved ones around us, let us all enjoy good food and good company and thank the Lord for another year. It is my hope that you vote and join Christians throughout the national in earnest prayer regarding the fate of our great nation. This election is much more than a nail-biter. It could very well be a game-changer. The outcome will impact us and our children’s children. Yet regardless of who is president of the United States, we must believe that God is in control, the ultimate Lord of all mankind. We’ll discuss the outcome in upcoming issues, so stay tuned. We wish you much happiness in this new season and point you toward our Christian advertisers. Please support them as they support the Christian community by offering goods and services that you can trust.

May You Be Richly Blessed, Joseph R. Menslage

Remembering the First Thanksgiving By Ruth Towns With fall comes cooler weather, pumpkins, hay rides and the annual celebration of Thanksgiving. From the History Channel we find the synopsis: In 1621, the Plymouth colonists and Wampanoag Indians shared an autumn harvest feast that is acknowledged today as one of the first Thanksgiving celebrations in the colonies. For more than two centuries, days of thanksgiving were celebrated by individual colonies and states. It wasn’t until 1863, in the midst of the Civil War, that President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed a national Thanksgiving Day to be held each November. It’s hard to believe that this little glimpse into history dates back nearly 400 years. We fondly refer to these “Plymouth colonists” as Pilgrims, people who traveled from England to escape religious persecution. But the gruesome details of their journey is often forgotten. In honor of this Thanksgiving, we remember the sacrifices of these brave souls. They yearned so deeply to practice their faith that for 66 days they braved the Atlantic Ocean. The winter that awaited them in Massachusetts was so extreme that most stayed on the Mayflower and suffered from scurvy and disease. Half of the original passengers died before springtime of exposure and illness. That March they left the Mayflower and were visited by an Abanaki Indian who spoke English. He brought to them the Pawtuxet Native American, Squanto, who had been kidnapped by an English sea captain, sold into slavery, escaped to London and returned home. It was Squanto who taught the malnourished Pilgrims how to grow corn, catch fish and make maple syrup. He also brokered a friendship between them and the Wampanoag tribe, which led to that first Thanksgiving celebration. But he also remained a friend to the Pilgrims for 50 years, which is one of the most unusual and rare

alliances in history, which was otherwise marred by tense and often bloody relations between the American Indians and the European settlers. Governor William Bradford is typically credited for the first Thanksgiving. He invited the Wampanoag chief and other friends for a three day feast, and they contributed five deer. We’re not sure if turkeys were involved, but we do know that Governor Bradford sent men to go fowling. We also know that pies or cakes were not included, because supplies of sugar had been used up aboard the Mayflower. The desserts (and perhaps turkey) we enjoy today doesn’t accurately reflect that original celebration. In fact, some point back to Europe to thanksgiving festivals or even earlier explorers for the thanks they gave for safe passage. According to James W. Baker, Senior Historian at Plymouth Plantation, “The reason that we have so many myths associated with Thanksgiving is that it is an invented tradition. It doesn’t originate in any one event. It is based on the New England puritan Thanksgiving, which is a religious Thanksgiving, and the traditional harvest celebrations of England and New England and maybe other ideas like commemorating the pilgrims. All of these have been gathered together and transformed into something different from the original parts.” But one thing is certain. The gratitude expressed across our nation every Thanksgiving is a tribute to God and a reflection of our Christian roots and foundation. Although some non-Christians may prefer this tradition be secularized, believers in Christ cherish Thanksgiving as a religious event -- a holiday that is actually a “holy day.” We at Katy Christian Magazine hope you enjoy Thanksgiving. Bless you as you spend time with your loved ones, and may we always give thanks for our faith, our nation and our Christian heritage.

The event is open 20 select evenings from November 24 to December 23. The inaugural Lights of Tejas was held in 2010 with over 800,000 lights and almost 3,200 visitors. 2011 saw over a million lights hung and almost 7,000 visitors. The 2012 Lights of Tejas promises to be another exciting event with exponential growth! Our greatest Christmas memories are formed by our Christmas family traditions, and there’s no greater favorite than taking in the brilliance and color of Christmas lights. Lights of Tejas not only provides over a million lights to take that tradition to new heights, but also a festive atmosphere full of activities, food, and fun! The highlights of Lights of Tejas are two light show venues where hundreds of thousands of lights are orchestrated to music and Scripture narration. Other activities include a 50-foot tower featuring climbing walls and four ziplines, inflatables, face painting, hayrides, a dazzling light maze, bungee trampolines, and gaga glow ball. Plenty of options are available for a full dinner or just a fun holiday snack. Take a break indoors with a meal and some hot cocoa, or get toasty around one of the open outdoor fires available for hotdogs and s’mores. Even a gift shop is open, with products ranging from holiday décor to special eyeglasses

that turn the Christmas lights into a sparkling array of snowflakes, stars, or reindeer! Entrance fees are $8 per adult and $4 per child (two and under are free). Food, gifts, and some of the activities cost extra. For more information and ticket sales, go to www.LightsOfTejas.com. Dear Doctor: Should I Get a Flu Shot? By Dr. Chau Tran UT Physicians at Cinco Ranch Can you provide me with some general information pertaining to the flu such symptoms, prevention and flu vaccination? What is the flu? The flu, also called influenza, is a viral infection in the nose, throat and lungs. What are the symptoms of the flu? The flu may cause fever, chills, cough, sore throat, runny nose, headache, muscle aches, loss of appetite, and tiredness. Cold symptoms are generally milder than flu symptoms. Some people describe the flu as the worst cold of their life. What should I do if I get the flu? It is recommended that you stay home and get plenty of rest; drinking lots of fluids will prevent dehydration. You can use over-thecounter medications like Tylenol/Ibuprofen for fever and pain, cough suppressants/expectorants for relieving coughs, and decongestants for runny nose. Most people usually feel better after one or two weeks, but for certain individuals, like babies, the elderly, and people with chronic medical problems, the flu can lead to serious, life-threatening diseases, such as pneumonia.

Republican For Judge

What can I do to prevent from getting the flu? 1. Take care of yourself by getting plenty of sleep, exercising regularly, and maintaining a healthy diet. 2. Wash your hands often. 3. Get a flu shot, which is recommended for all people ages 6 months and older. What is the flu vaccine? There are two delivery methods of flu vaccines, injection and nasal

spray. An injection contains dead viruses while the nasal spray contains live but weakened viruses. The vaccines work by exposing your body to said viruses, allowing your body time to produce antibodies. Should you become exposed to a “live” virus, your body is ready with its new defenses. Can I catch the flu from the flu vaccine? You cannot get the flu from the injection because the viruses are dead. The nasal spray contains live but weakened viruses thus it would not cause an infection. Can I still get the flu if I got vaccinated? Since there are various flu viruses, it is possible to get the flu after vaccination. However, flu symptoms would be milder than if you did not get vaccinated. Spreading the Word of God Through IndyCar By Rev. Robert A. Crutchfield Race cars have been used for everything from selling candy to recruiting soldiers for the Army. Have you ever wondered what would happen if this sort of marketing were employed to spread God ‘s word? Thanks to Katy based Kingdom Racing, you don’t have to wonder. Kingdom Racing was founded by George Del Canto. Their goal is to reach a million men and women for Jesus Christ through motor sports. In 2008 they became the first faith-vision team in history to race in the Indianapolis 500. This year marks not only their fifth appearance in that legendary race, but the first year that the team will participate in the entire IndyCar season. To do this they have partnered with Schmidt Hamilton Motorsports. Team Director Charles West had this to say when announcing the partnership earlier this year; “This is a benchmark year for Kingdom Racing, one that’s been in the works for many years. We’re definitely up to the challenge and couldn’t be more honored to partner with Schmidt Hamilton Motorsports.” 4 color gradients

Schmidt Hamilton’s Sam Schmidt added this about joining with Kingdom Racing’s effort: “We couldn’t be more pleased than to have a relationship in 2012 with Kingdom Racing. Obviously, I am a firm believer in their mission and sincerely hope we can add significant value and exposure to a combined program moving forward. There are also extreme ironies at work here such as my incident back in 2000, Davey’s (Hamilton) incident while driving for SSM in 2001, ensuing challenges which can only be overcome through faith, combined with George and Charles’ commitment and dedication to fellowship through racing related programs, etc. Needless to say, the opportunities are endless and only restricted by one’s imagination.” The main attraction is the blue #77 car piloted by veteran driver Simon Pagenaud and sponsored by HP. As of this writing, Pagenaud

is 5th in the overall IndyCar standings, and is scheduled to start in the middle of row 8 in the Indy 500. At each event the group holds fan events using the car and its driver as the main draw. They use the opportunity to discuss Jesus Christ and God’s word with those gathered. In fact, they are expanding their outreaches this year in conjunction with participating in the entire IndyCar season for the first time. At Indy this year, Kingdom Racing members spent three full hours visiting with the legendary “Alleycats” encamped at the entrance of the storied Gasoline Alley, and apparently they and God’s message were very well received ! Among their partner organizations is The Fellowship of Cinco Ranch, whose Teaching Pastor-Global and Local Impact, J. David Ruzicka, serves on Kingdom Racing’s advisory board. Other advisory board members include Wallace Henley - Second Baptist Church, Houston, Assistant Pastor, author and former White House aide, Patrick Morley - Founder and CEO of Man in the Mirror, and Richard Jackson who, among other things, serves on the board of Porsche Club of America. The team also has a very active Twitter and Facebook online community. Through their social media outreaches they not only share team news and photos, but also scripture passages so God’s word gets in front of people. Following qualifying for this year’s 500 race, many people on Twitter were speaking excitedly about helping Kingdom Racing pass out Christian themed “hero cards.” They are located on Facebook at facebook.com/kingdomracing, on Twitter at twitter. com/#!/KingdomRacing. Champion Gymnastics . . . From Japan to Katy! By Ruth Towns ”Where children gather to discover the power and grace within themselves . . . “ This is the motto of Champion Gymnastics Academy, established in 1996 by Kellie and Hideo Mizoguchi, a couple with deep roots in the national and international gymnastics community. “We first opened in the Willowbrook area in Cy-Fair, moved to West Houston, and since 2004 have been at our South Mason location,” says Coach Mizo. He and Coach Kellie have built an academy that caters to the very young through young adults with an emphasis on values. Coach Mizo’s journey has been interesting, to say the least. He came to the United States in 1974 after competing in the Japanese Elite Program in the early ‘70s. It was in Japan that he earned his bachelor’s degree (Chukyo University) before attending graduate school at the University of Oregon. There he earned a master’s degree in physical education while assisting the USA Men’s Gymnastics Team. He started a Junior Boys Program at the National Academy of Artistic Gymnastics in Eugene, Oregon then joined the Junior Olympic National Team program as one of the Junior National Coaching Staff under the direction of Mr. Watanbe in 1979. In 1984 he

stepped into Mr. Watanbe’s shoes as Director until 1994. Mizo is one of the few individuals still actively involved in coaching the Junior Olympic Boys Program. In 1988 he married competitive gymnast Kellie Kavanagh in her hometown of St. Louis, Missouri. While still competing and at just 16-years of age, Coach Kellie became a qualified judge and at 18 began her own competitive program with a team that won the State Title. That same year she also became a NAWGJ State Judging Director. Her family helped her open her own gym when she was 20 and through the years she has coached state, regional and national champions. She’s also a nationally ranked choreographer as well as an Elite coach. “It’s an honor that fifteen of our gymnasts have received college scholarships,” says Coach Kellie, whose goal is to coach in a positive way that teaches students life lessons along the way. Coach Mizo and Coach Kellie have raised three children in the Lutheran faith -- Kyle, Krista and Tyler. As Christians, they believe in community and the power of teamwork. Whether their students are tiny tots or international competitors, the staff at Champion Gymnastics helps students learn to work together, encourage one another, achieve personal milestones and rejoice in everyone’s accomplishments. That’s the goal.

They also help students chase their individual dreams. The strength, flexibility and conditioning prepares kids for gymnastics, but also other sports. “Physical development, coordination and confidence are the by products of a rigorous artistry,” says Coach Mizo. “We help students develop physically, but with that comes emotional development, accountability and a work ethic that they can apply on campus and in their future endeavors.” Recreational lifestyle exercise programs help with balance and flexibility. There’s also trampoline and tumbling, back hand spring boot camp, and the ever popular cheer classes which cover the basics of motions, cheers, chants, stunts, spiriting, dance, jumps and voice projection with a little emphasis on tumbling. Advanced cheer classes are also available. Visit champgym.com to learn more about the programs. You can email Coach Mizo at mizo@champgym.com or Coach Kellie at kellie@champgym.com.

Local Christian Student Highlights Allison Fields

Jonathan Rightmire

Classification: 12th Grade Faith West Academy Faith West Academy faculty members recently named Allie as the “Most Representative Female Student” of the senior class. The honor is bestowed each year to a deserving student that exemplifies outstanding character and integrity. The student who has demonstrated excellence in academics and leadership qualities. “I was first surprised that I was chosen for this honor,” she said. “I was honored that I represented my class and my school. It was humbling and it was a blessing from God.” Allie is a member of the National Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, and has been her class secretary all four years of high school. Allie has proven she is a well-rounded athlete by playing soccer and has been on the high school varsity volleyball, swimming, and softball teams. In 2011 she received the Coach’s Choice MVP Award for volleyball. If she had to choose a famous athlete as her role model, she said it would be three-time Olympic Gold Medalist Misty MayTreanor. Allie has some of the same qualities as Treanor; that “can do,” never give up attitude. Allie said; “Always keep trying, that will get you far in the long run.” Also like Treanor, she gets the most excited in volleyball when she delivers a good “kill.” Allie is a member of Kingsland Baptist.

Mary Cate Archinal

Classification: 6th Grade Faith West Academy

While middle school may have its challenges, Faith West Academy student Jonathan Rightmire meets them with enthusiasm. Last school year, after testing and assessment, Jonathan was promoted from 4th grade to 6th after scoring upper high school level on all but one core subject. Middle school along with the innovative Student Adaptive Individualized Learning (SAIL) program has opened a whole new world of opportunities. The FWA SAIL program has afforded Jonathan the opportunity to academically advance as material is mastered and provided flexibility in his schedule that permits him to participate in subjects and extracurricular activities that otherwise may not have been possible. SAIL also presents academic opportunities in middle school such as preparing for the Duke Talent Search and Spelling Bee. Jonathan is learning to play the trombone in band and is on the Faith West Jr. High football team. He said his favorite class is Pre AP Reading because; “it’s intellectually stimulating and I get to be in class with friends.” Football practice is Jonathan’s favorite after school activity. “Football practice is important to hone my skills as a player and my coaches are the best. They care about their players,” he said.

Classification: 8th Grade Faith West Academy

In her first performance for Faith West Academy chapel, Mary Cate gave a memorable and emotional solo “How He Loves Us.” It was the first time that the chapel band had introduced a violin as a welcomed addition. Since she is so young and the notes she hit were spot on, the obvious question becomes; “how long have you been playing the violin?”. “I have been playing since I was 3 ½ or 4,” said the 13 year-old Mary Cate. “Actually I began musical training learning rhythms, and then advancing to a small cigar box violin (she shows with hands approximately 12 inches). I play using the Suzuki method.” This method supports the idea that pre-school age children can learn to play the violin if learning steps were small enough and if the instrument was scaled down to fit their body. She reads music, but also plays by ear. “If I hear one or two times I can usually pick up the song.” Mary Cate also plays the piano and at her dad’s suggestion will pick up the mandolin or guitar as a next instrument to learn. She said of her music that she plays classical, but her passion is for Christian contemporary. She loves country music as well. Matthew & Lizi Bailey and Mac Powell are her favorite musical artist. Mary Cate’s other interests include cheerleading (she started with tumbling before advancing to gymnastics).

Pastor Profile: Titus Benton, Youth Pastor at Current, A Christian Church By Ruth Towns Titus Benton is the busy pastor of student ministries at Current -A Christian Church. He ministers to the tweens and teens, leading the student groups as they study the Word and get involved in the community. “My wife and I moved here from Missouri the summer of 2011, and my first official Sunday fell on that Father’s Day,” says Benton, who is dad to a seven- and four-year-old. “I knew I wanted to be a part of this warm and welcoming church, made up of people from many different backgrounds, ethnicities, and walks of life.” The congregation worships God in an upbeat way, sharing God’s truth in a creative, fun and simple-to-understand format. “We take God seriously yet maintain a relaxed come-as-you-are atmosphere which really appeals to the kids and takes the pressure off what we appear to be on the outside. We focus instead on who we need to be on the inside.” Acoustic, electric and bass guitars, drums, piano and keyboard add a layer of contemporary worship to each service. 6th thru 8th graders meet at 9:30 in the student building in gender- and age-specific small groups and high school students meet at 11:00. “We make sure the students get in a group in which they are comfortable,” says Benton, who maintains a Facebook page for all the student ministry events. There is some additional excitement at Current, because Benton is also an author who urges people to give the Bible a second look. A Conversational Commentary was just released. “My goal is that people (believers and skeptics alike) read the book and be moved to read the Scriptures for themselves,” he says. “There are scores of books written about the Bible, so the release of another one does not a news story make. But I hope the tone of my book will inspire others to discover (or rediscover) the Bible—for the first time or

begin to dialogue about what it means for today.”

afresh—and

The bottom line is that In a fast-paced world, and especially in the eyes of the younger generation, the Bible is often viewed as archaic, out of touch, and boring. But Benton’s 350 page summary survey of the entire Bible expresses deep convictions and reasonable doubts that are just as relevant for today’s reader as the ancient documents were to the original audience. He even unearths little-known facts and splashes the pages with occasional humor. “I strove for a readable, entertaining, and inspirational collection of reflections, questions, and Twitter-sized summaries of all sixty-six books of the Bible,” says Benton. The book is available through Amazon and the CreateSpace estore. A Kindle edition and audiobook are both due out soon. You can learn more at www.facebook.com/conversationalcommentary or www.createspace.com/3853066. And be sure to check out the church’s website and the adventures of the student ministry at www. currentchristian.org.

Religion and Politics By Dr. K. Lynn Lewis ‘Tis the season of political campaigns, voting, and reconciling with election results. We rejoice in this freedom and tout this regularly scheduled process as one the hallmark opportunities of a healthy nation. However, amidst the clamors for hope and change and the call to believe in America, repeated voices continue to call for a separation of church and state. Certainly, as offspring of ancestors who sought to escape from various tyrannies of religious-based political persecution, many of us do not want our government to dictate who, when, where, and how we worship. Nor do we necessarily want religion to dictate our government, especially when we live amidst a melting pot of religions. What we seek is balance, as voiced in Ecclesiastes 7:18, “Those who fear God will avoid all extremes.” The two sides are this: While many prefer their religion free from undue, secular political influence, many likewise prefer their politics

free from undue, sectarian religious influence. Yet, is this possible? Can religion and politics be separated? On the one hand, the Scriptures tell us that “Everyone must submit themselves to the governing authorities, for there is no authority ex-

cept that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God.” (Romans 13:1) Clearly, God established the very concept of authority, the existence of institutional governance, and the practicalities of segmented leadership among groups of peoples. As evidenced in the call of Moses (Exodus 3), the selection of representative leadership among successively larger groups of people (Exodus 18), and the anointing of selected national leaders (1 Samuel 9, 16), government is, itself, an established Biblical concept. But, does government have to have a religious component? The reality is that every government system rests on a framework of beliefs. The authorities, differentiations, standards, and accountabilities claimed and enforced by our various societal communities are rooted in something, someone, somewhere. The fact that our own American system grew out of a heavily influenced Biblical and Christian worldview has been one reason our nation has been perceived as a blessed nation, and one reason that the removal of any core piece of our original framework is perceived as weakening our nation and removing a portion of our blessing. Given that religion is defined as a set of fundamental beliefs and practices, often involving ritual observances and containing codes governing conduct, governments are, by this definition, inherently somewhat religious in nature.

On the other hand, religion contains governmental elements, including a component much more fundamental than church or denominational structure. Perhaps you have heard the mantra in government that suggests “who you know” is often the most important thing in any situation? Does this mean at the end of the day that politics is personal? The same appears to be true in religion, particularly Christianity. Note Jesus’ words in John 14:6, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” And again in Matthew 7:21-23 where Jesus explains, “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven . . . many will say to me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and in your name drive out demons and perform many miracles?’ Then I will tell them plainly, ‘I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!’” So, all in all, religion is personal and political. If entrance through Heaven’s Gate is gained through “who you know,” and politics and religion are not separate on the other side of eternity, perhaps they are also somewhat integrated and inseparable on this side as well. Dr. K. Lynn Lewis serves as Executive Vice-President/Provost of The Bible Seminary in Katy, Texas.

Witness Through Fitness: Camp Gladiator By Ruth Towns Thinking of joining a boot camp in Katy? The weather is great and there’s no better time to get started. Founded by strong Christian Ally Davidson, Camp Gladiator was created with a goal to “witness through fitness.” Trainer John Steele is proud of this heritage and continues the tradition. “We are located in multiple different city and states, and appeal to everyone from high level athletes to brides to grandmothers.” Although clients don’t have to share the faith, often trainer-client bonding and trust gives Steele the opportunity to open up about his beliefs and values. “Sometimes the topic of stewardship arises, and stewardship comes in many forms. One of the greatest gifts God has given us is our bodies. Taking care of our “temples” should rate high in in our goals,” he says. “Physical results often open doors to the spiritual realms, so people are in a place to listen an not tune-out.”

K an at d yO O w pe n ra ed te d

Don’t let the words “boot camp” intimidate you. Overall, the atmosphere is uplifting. “There is no negativity,” says Steele. “We have people of all fitness levels doing the same work out at their own pace, so a feeling of unity and encouragement permeates each session. No

one is tearing anyone down.” This is a contrast to other boot camps that can be strict and militaristic. “Our work outs lighten the mood, and a side benefit is that good long-term friendships are grown.” Steele’s focus is two-fold: 1.) To grow the business and 2.) represent Christ well through his actions. With this in him he offers a discounted rate for four weeks of camp. “We want Camp Gladiator to offer the best and most affordable way to get fit in Katy,” he says. He explains the concept, as follows:

God’s Creation By George L. Arroyo One of the greatest passages in the Bible is Genesis 1:1, “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” There is so much evidence of God’s existence that men remain without excuse to be faithful to God (Romans 1:20). God’s presence is imminent to both the unbeliever as well as to the believer (Matthew 5:45). Creation is a witness to God’s presence. The universe bears the fingerprint of the Creator in all its intricate design. This means that the world reveals to human experience that God exists. Even though nature reveals much about God’s being, nature fails to reveal to men their salvation and eternal destination with God.

account for a vast, orderly universe. In fact, the unbeliever suppresses the truth of God (Romans 1:18). Bender Morris stated, “A skeptic is a person who, when he sees the handwriting on the wall, claims it is a forgery.” There is no evidence or proof available in the universe to suggest that God does not exists. If questions are asked, they may be something like: “Here’s the universe: how should it be accounted for? How did it get here?” The best answer is that God created the universe. He did so for His glory. Men are created with a purpose: to fellowship with Him and display Christ-like virtues.

For many Evangelical Christians, the Bible presupposes the reality of God. Scripture does not attempt to prove God through syllogistic jargon or philosophical arguments. The nation of Israel took the existence of God for granted, because God was just as real as the very thoughts they had about the external world they lived in. The Bible assumes the reality of God, and never argues His existence; however, the time, place, how, when and where God created the universe is a mystery shrouded in the minds of humanity. Skeptics will affirm that there are no proofs of God. The universe is the product of chance. By “chance,” unbelievers mean that the universe is random in nature. There is no reason, or purpose. However, chance cannot produce or design matter. Chance cannot adequately

A President Straight Out of Katy? Let’s Hope! By Ruth Towns Who among us ever dreamed of running for the office of President of the United States, let alone navigating the steps to do so? When one particular Katyite felt called, he did just that. On September 12, 2011, Keith Drummond filed with the Federal Election Commission and officially announced his candidacy. Mitt Romney received the Republican nomination, but you can see Drummond’s vision for America at his campaign website, www.drummond2012.com. Drummond is the president of Iron Sky, a company based in Katy that provides crime-fighting technology solutions to local law enforcement across the country. “We founded the company in 2008 because we saw the specific needs of law enforcement were not being addressed in the market place,” says Drummond. “Police needed better tools to fight crime, so Iron Sky was formed to provide just that through technology.” You can learn more at www.ironsky.com or contact Drummond at kdrummond@ironsky.com. As this husband, father and businessman shares his journey into politics with our readers, one thing is obvious: His wife, Kristen, supports him all the way. Together they are raising three children. Josephine is a seven-year-old first grader at Exley Elementary. Luke is five and in preschool at Second Baptist. Jacqueline is 16 months.

With this in mind we began our interview asking the Drummonds about their Christian walk. Katy Christian Magazine: How does faith play a role in your decisions? Keith Drummond: I gave my life to Christ at age seven. I was raised in church by wonderful Christian parents who taught me to love the Lord. When I was leaving the Army in 1997 I realized that while I was saved, my relationship with Christ was not as strong as it should be. So I rededicated my life to Him. When Kristen and I got married in 2004 and starting having children in 2005, I began to better understand the love God has for us as His children. Everyday it seems I

see another way God uses me, my spouse and my kids to teach each other about Him and to grow our relationship with Him. We have been members at Second Baptist West Campus in Katy since 2006. Kristen Drummond: As a Christian, I believe my husband’s strong faith is a large part of why he is one of the few equipped for the job. I encouraged him to do what he felt led to do, no matter what or how “out there” it sounded. I’m proud of him for being one of the few who is willing to take action, pay attention, walk the walk, put himself and his reputation on the line, roll up his sleeves and do the work of turning this country around. There is nothing convenient about the work of making real change and I was impressed that my husband was willing to be inconvenienced to do what he knows is right. KCM: Why the presidency? Keith Drummond: I ran for president for one main reason -- obedience. Without a doubt, I know the Lord led me to run. I cannot tell you His reasons; I just know it was something I was led to do. My wife helped me remember that we are not always going to know the reasons God does things. Regardless of the outcome, our job is to obey. I had supporters who constantly reminded me of that same fact along the way. Kristen Drummond: This country’s problems will not be solved by big speeches that sound more like sermons. It will take work and a man of strong, unwaivering character to get the job done. I believe my husband is exactly that and I’ve been completely supportive of his efforts from day one.

KCM: What issues do you feel are crucial to our nation? Keith Drummond: I believe the breakdown of the family is the biggest problem facing our country, and I do not hear political leadership even discussing it, much less acting on it. I did not fully understand this when I first started my campaign. I spent my time discussing our debt, jobs, the economy and national security. Those certainly are issues we must deal with, but the family is the fabric of our society. As a direct result of the breakdown of families, our society is sick. We can work on all the other issues, but if the fabric is falling apart and we do not address it, our work will not correct our decline. America desperately needs people to stand up and boldly and unashamedly say what needs to be said: that our country needs God back in its institutions. This return to God as a nation will start one person at a time, one family at a time, with each of us taking responsibility for allowing America to fall so far, and vowing to never let it happen again. Kristen Drummond: I’m frustrated with the lack of leadership and, honesty, in politics in general. The status quo is more worried about partisanship than finding real solutions for ALL American citizens. Power and greed dominate. Inciting class warfare, sadly, seems to be the mode du jour. Even the voting process itself has become a game between parties. For instance, we are taxing the middle and higher income Americans more while continuing to expand the amount and size of Welfare. Healthcare is now more about taxation than actually caring for Americans in need of healthcare. And to make matters worse, everyday people who are serious about bettering the current state of affairs will find the process of becoming an elected official is another convoluted process, lacking transparency, which requires playing a game in a good ole’ boy network that has no interest in let-

ting in this new-fangled breed of frustrated “let’s do something about it” citizen.

and that we dramatically reduced the activities of the federal government to match the intention of the constitution.

KCM: What about winning?

It was an honor to interview the Drummonds and we thank them for their service. Their testimony is timely In this robust election cycle where so much hangs in the balance. It’s important to make sense of the often confusing political process, and a good place to start is at Who Represents me? This website allows voters to key in their zip code to easily access their Texas U.S. Senator, Texas State Senator, Texas State Representative, and their Texas State Board of Education Member. Contact information for all elected officials is shown: www. fyi.legis.state.tx.us.

Keith Drummond: I intended to run in all states and got on the ballot in New Hampshire and Missouri, receiving a number a votes that only slightly trailed the top Republican contender. Did I expect to win? Not necessarily, but I believed, and still believe, I can do the job. We’ll see as time goes on what the future holds. Kristen Drummond: A lot of people talk. There’s no shortage of talking heads on TV or anonymous complainers and pot-stirrers online. My husband had the guts to take a shot, no matter what the odds or how anything turns out. KCM: What can ordinary citizens do going forward? Keith Drummond: Be obedient if and when you are called into service. Register to vote, then vote your conscience. Know who represents you and understand their positions. Read the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence. It takes some effort to be an educated voter, but it is a responsibility and opportunity others around the world can only dream of. Voter apathy can lose elections. Voter turn out can win elections. Everyone has a voice at the polling booth. Kristen Drummond: I’d prefer that we, as a population of American citizens, do a better job of paying attention to what our elected officials DO in office and holding them accountable. I believe in the constitution and would prefer we defaulted to the constitution when deciding what and how much power the federal government has --

You can also read the Constitution in its entirety at: www.usconstitution.net/const.html. What begins as a peaceful summer on the river is soon disrupted by Toad and his obsession with motorcars. After crashing several cars, he then steals one and lands himself in jail. His friends Mole, Badger, and Water Rat make every effort to protect Toad’s residence, Toad Hall, but are instead ousted by the Ferrets and Weasels of the Wild Wood. Will Toad escape from jail and regain Toad Hall? Will he learn a lesson about his boastful and impetuous ways? This is a spirited adaptation of a timeless classic. Free Ice Cream in Fulshear! Politics and Religion: Election 2012 By Mark Williamson Federal Intercessors

the civil war.

It has almost become a cliché, but November 6 of this year will undoubtedly be one of if not the most important elections in our history; certainly since Lincoln’s election just before

We stand at the precipice of whether America will re-orient back toward the free, mostly Christian America most of us remember, or will we dive off the cliff into the jagged rocks of a post-Christian, European-style socialism with the same debt and economic ruin of Greece, Spain, and others. For 200-plus years, America has been comprehensively blessed beyond any nation in the world in history, thanks to God! And every nation that has progressed and been blessed has done so because of the influence of Christianity. This is a historical fact. Those who would “unravel” that influence in our nation are traitors – according to our Founding Fathers! It was George Washington himself who said: “Of all the dispositions and habits which lead to political prosperity, Religion and morality are indispensable supports. In vain would that man claim the tribute of Patriotism who should labour to subvert these great Pillars of human happiness, these firmest props of the duties of Men and citizens. The mere Politician, equally with the pious man ought to respect and to cherish them. A volume could not trace all their connections with private and public felicity.”

In the Moving Industry Since 1983

He also made this statement: “…there is no truth more thoroughly established than that there exists in the economy and course of nature an indissoluble union between virtue and happiness.” That means that as we depart from the goodness and order of God, we sink into the destructions of the enemy that await us, and which are manifest both in our culture and economy!

This election is essentially a referendum on Obama’s last four years, his liberal/socialist, anti-Christian, anti-Israel, anti-American agenda, and whether we can afford four more. We can’t – for those who are a little slow. With a very short but honest “fruit inspection,” we see by his record that President Obama is: A liberal socialist who wants to “share the wealth” and do it not through the freedom and blessing of charity and generosity, but through confiscatory, punitive taxes, and destructive debt. Immoral because socialism is immoral. Theft is immoral! Socialism takes by force what one person earned and gives it to another. Government sanctioned theft is still theft. Robin Hood was still a thief ! Jesus was never a thief. Judas was, and you can still hear his hypocritical cries “it could have been given to the poor” echoing in the self-serving political agenda of liberalism to this day! Hyper-pro abortion He has worked every angle to make abortion not “safe and rare” as the democrats (Bill Clinton) once claimed – which is horrible enough – but easily available, even encouraged, and a mainstay of “Obamacare” with the government subsidizing abortions with your money. I quote National Right to Life President Carol Tobias: “All voters who care about the value and dignity of human life

must do everything they can to elect Mitt Romney and a Congress who are committed to repeal of ObamaCare, If President Obama wins re-election, it will mean massive abortion subsidies and it will put the lives of millions at risk through systematic governmentimposed rationing of lifesaving medical care.” Not “pro-Christian. Though he claims to be one, he says we’re not a Christian nation. He is very pro-Muslim and anti-Israel. He cancels the National Day of Prayer activities in the White House so as not to offend anyone, but makes a big deal out of Ramadan. So where are his true loyalties? Is it really that hard to figure out? Very suspect on national defense issues. From the looming massive, dangerous cuts in our military budget to the terrorists attacks in Libya and Egypt that killed four diplomats (and then with the administration knowingly and repeatedly lying about what they knew had happened), he has no core commitment to our security. The “debtor in chief.” We owe over 16 trillion dollars. He has incurred more national debt than all previous presidents combined throughout our history! Openly supports same-sex marriage, a cultural disaster in the making. Ever society in history that has embraced homosexual behavior has ultimately died. He and his corrupt Attorney General (Holder) do

not support and defend the DOMA law, and actually work against it even though it is still the law! Administering and enforcing the law is the primary responsibility of the Administrative branch of our government, whether they like the law or not! And this is just one of many laws they overtly disrespect and refuse to enforce because it is not in line with their agenda. Has rammed down our throat the forced acceptance of homosexual behavior in the military, lowering the morale of the forces, and putting an even larger bulls-eye on those serving in the Middle East. And the list goes on, and on, and on, and on . . . There is an old saying “Fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice, shame on me!” Don’t be fooled! Vote righteously! Support the truths of God, Biblical principles, and our constitution that was framed from it! The fabric of our nation is rapidly fraying in part because of the lessthan-pro-America, anti-God president we have in the White House. His socialistic party that controls the Senate hasn’t even passed a budget for several years. It’s time to wake up from this nightmare, and get a grip on the steering wheel of our nation before we cross the median into the oncoming traffic! Our children will one day look back and realize how they were counting on us to be grown-ups this time around! Let’s not fail them….each other….or God! Katy YMCA Turkey Dash Celebrates 10th Anniversary! By Staff Writer The Katy YMCA and The Fellowship at Cinco Ranch will host the 10th annual Turkey Dash on Thanksgiving morning, November 22, 2012. The race has grown by leaps and bounds in recent years to become Katy’s premiere fun run. Last year over 4,400 participants gathered on race morning to kick off their Holiday season by participating in the Turkey Dash. In honor of the 10th anniversary, a competitive 10K has been added to the event line up! With 4 races to choose from, there’s something for everyone; a Kids Race beginning at 7:10am,

10K at 7:45am, 5K at 8:05 and a 1 Mile Walk/Run at 9:15am. All races start and finish at the Katy YMCA located at the corner of Westheimer Parkway and Peek Rd, one block off the Grand Parkway in Cinco Ranch. The event was the brainchild of leaders from the Y and the church wishing to organize an activity to bring the community together. Now the Turkey Dash is a well recognized, community Holiday kick off celebration which attracts participants from all parts of West Houston. Race day highlights include awards in age categories for the Kids Race, 10K and 5K. The post race party features door prizes, complimentary refreshments and games as well as a Kids Fun Zone complete with a rock wall, moonwalks, Turkey Mascot, Santa and more! Beth Strand, race coordinator says, “We have seen family participation grow over the past few years. Families creating memories is really what the Turkey Dash is all about.” The Presenting Sponsor is Reliant, an NRG company. Title sponsors include Grand Vision, Texas Children’s Hospital West Campus, DSS and Dr. Bruscia’s Family Foot & Ankle Wellness Center. Interested in participating, sponsoring or volunteering? Check out details at www.ymcaturkeydash.org or call the Katy YMCA at 281392-5055.
