Inspired

to Higher Education by Olivia Cane

Cambridge dictionary defines the word inspiration as, “someone or something that give you ideas for doing something.” Its root meaning is to “breath into.” In the case of Chevella Sampson, a hairstylist of ten years, that breath of inspiration came to her during a deeply moving spiritual transformation. “The Lord placed on my heart the urge to dig deeper,” she explained. “He called on me to study His word.” At the time, she didn’t know how God wanted her to do that. “Yet I was inspired to go to church one morning,” Chevella explains. “there I met a Belhaven University representative who told me that no matter what your course of study, Belhaven will teach you the word of Christ. I could actually feel God speaking to me.” “I was nervous. I hadn’t been in school for 25 years,” continues Chevella. “Would I be accepted How was I going to manage books, tuition, financial aid? But I wanted to learn more about the Bible, and I knew in my heart that the Christ-based curriculum at Belhaven was the right place for me. Then I called a Belhaven University counselor. It was like she completed my thoughts! All my fears were instantly put to rest. The staff made it so easy. Financial aid was available to me even before God promised me it would be. I

was overjoyed – and most importantly, I knew this was where I belonged.” Today, Chevella has been at Belhaven for two years. “Everybody seems like family They know your name and they want you to succeed. My professors have an open-door policy. If you need guidance, guidance will be provided to you. But it’s the Biblical perspective that’s super important. It doesn’t matter how smart you are or how much you’ve got it together –or even if you don’t have it together. Having a Biblical perspective in your education not only allows you to expand your career, it fulfills a purpose in life no matter what talent you have. Talent is no good without purpose. And your purpose is to know the word of Christ.” For Houston residents who want to complete a bachelor’s or master’s degree quickly and affordably, Belhaven University is the answer to a quality adult studies program. Both degree programs are tailored to the needs of busy working adults. Belhaven students graduate with the tools they need to stay competitive in today’s global economy, and they do it with all the love and support of the word of God. “Belhaven is everything you expect in a God-inspired learning environment,” Chevella says. “You will feel so at home here.”

It is hard to believe, but with this issue we are starting our fourth year of publishing our sister publication, Fort Bend Christian Magazine! Our first issue of Fort Bend Christian Magazine was the August/ September issue back in 2014, with only 28 pages. Since then, we’ve grown by almost 50%; we directly mail out to 32,000 homes, and can be picked up in 320 locations, including most churches. Our mission is to provide cutting edge stories important to today’s Christians, and interesting editorial content your entire family can enjoy. We value all reader feedback we receive, and would encourage anyone reading this letter to send suggestions, ideas, and input on how we can improve our magazines. Our primary goal is to keep our readers happy and spread a family-friendly and Godly message, and we are continuously working on ways to enhance that. The project that we are working on now is promoting our social media, particularly our Facebook page. If you haven’t done so already, please like our Facebook page and check out more updates on our new and exciting improvements! Lastly, there is no greater way you can show you support for us than by supporting those who advertise in our publication. We feature a variety of wonderful and family-friendly establishments, doctors, law offices, churches, and so much more. When you’re in their area, swing by and let them know that you saw their ad in our magazine that you appreciate them advertising with us. Our goal is to serve our community in a Christian manner, and this would not be possible without the funding of our advertisers. Thank you for loyalty and your support! Joseph R. Menslage President/Publisher Katy Christian Magazine joseph@houstonchristianmagazine.com

Canine Ambassador Makes Living in Cane Island Even Better By Jessa McClure The sun is peeking over the horizon and beginning to flood Katy’s unique master-planned community, Cane Island with golden rays. For those who live in this amenity-filled village, it is just another day in paradise. But for Hub, the community’s canine ambassador, his day of work is just starting. He awakes in the home of Cane Island’s Vice President Matt Lawson, who cares for the pooch when he’s not working for his Kibble. His wife and children dote on the furry, golden retriever as he stretches, shakes off his slumber and is led to the community’s Welcome Center where he will spend his day greeting guests and residents with a shake, a sniff and a head to be patted. “Hub is our community mascot,” said Cane Island’s Director of Marketing, Lawren Eckhardt. “He comes into our office every day. He’s there to greet people and make them feel comfortable. We call him our ambassador.” And his title isn’t just for show. He’s not only on hand in the Welcome Center to offer his comfort, he also serves as a spokesperson for the community’s website, where he

answers all of the questions guests and residents need to know. The handsome pooch’s likeness is prominent on the site and he explains that his duties include looking good, representing Cane Island at special events and around the Katy area, hosting the annual Cane Island Ambassador’s Gala and inviting dignitaries to the Ambassador’s Suite that was named in Hub’s honor. “Hub is a one of the best-behaved dogs I’ve ever been around,” Eckhardt said. “He walks around with people in the community, and some people regularly stop by the Welcome Center just to pet him.” The two-year-old golden retriever comes from a long line of diplomatic canines and when founders of Cane Island saw the pup’s potential to spread happiness and good will among the residents of the community, they knew they had found their furry representative.

It didn’t take much to convince Hub to take the position, just a few dog treats, and now he has become the embodiment of warmth and excitement in the community. He welcomes new neighbors and even has scheduled interactions with his adoring fans. Guests and residents can stop by the Welcome Center to find out when and where they can wave hello to the happy pup. “He instantly puts people at ease when they meet him,” Eckhardt said. “Everyone loves him.”

The Back-to-School Social Network By Dr. Rebecca Deurlein In the next month, you will be bombarded with all things “back to school.” Aside from the sales flyers and ads, you will be counseled on how to prepare your kids for the first day and how to help them get back to an academic mindset. But what is often ignored - and, ironically, WAY more important to your children - is the social aspect of returning to school. Your kids will tell you that the beginning of a new school year is a social crapshoot. Or, as Forrest Gump’s mom would say, “You never know what you’re gonna get.” Some friends haven’t seen one another in two months and are worried about reconnecting. Some fade away over the summer, while new, unexpected friendships have blossomed. Some former enemies have become friends, and vice versa. And some are in limbo, neither party knowing where they stand with the other. It’s amazing that all this change can happen over a short summer break, but it does. When it comes to kids, especially teenagers, relationships evolve and devolve at warp speed. I can guarantee you that your kids are more worried about where they stand with their peers than just about anything else. I promise you they’ve spent more time thinking about whether their friend group is still intact than they have about their summer reading assignment. So let’s tackle what you can do, as parents, to

help your kids transition smoothly into the back-to-school social network. First, do not be shy about jumping into this conversation with your children. They’re already thinking about it, so you’re not introducing a problem that hadn’t occurred to them. Start by asking, “So what do you think your friend group will look like this year?” Then sit back and Continued on page 14

listen. Try not to interrupt. Let them talk through where everyone stands with one another and pay attention to their reaction to the changes. Second, if they are having problems with a friend, share your own experiences and insights to help them work through an appropriate response. For instance, regardless of what other people might have said and done, always encourage your children to take the social and ethical high road. Everyone should have a bottom line, and they should refuse to lower themselves to actions they’ll regret later. For some, it is refusing to say a bad word about another person. For others, it’s avoiding confrontation and choosing to let friendships die slowly. Some prefer to get everything out in the open, but their bottom line is that they will avoid hurtful statements and focus on how they feel. The thing is, your kids are still figuring out who they are and what their bottom line is. As parents, you know them better than anyone, so you can advise them on ways to handle various scenarios. One caveat: Be sure to help them with responses that suit their personalities and comfort levels, not your own. Third, do not, under any circumstances, involve yourself in your kids’ squabbles or friendships. Your job is to guide your child behind the scenes, not intervene on their behalf. Your kids will gain and lose friends on a consistent basis (just as we do as adults), and they must learn how to do both gracefully. Responding appropriately to relationship changes is a life skill, and the sooner they learn it, the better off they’ll be. They Continued on page 16

won’t learn these lessons if you “save” them from heartache or frustration. They must experience these emotions to grow and mature as adults who know how to be good friends. Fourth, on the other hand, do not tolerate any behavior that makes your child the victim of bullying, verbal, or physical abuse. It is far too common nowadays to see children resort to self-hurting and even suicide when they can no longer bear the barrage of attacks from bullies. If you sense your child is facing this trauma, you must involve the other parents, school officials, and even the police to intervene and provide support and safety for your child. If you notice your child withdrawing, becoming anxious, or exhibiting a major change of personality, you need to get to the bottom of it. Even if you feel your child is overreacting or being too sensitive, that doesn’t change the way he or she feels. Be sensitive and seek

Three Steps to Recover When You Fail By Pastor Robert Burdett PowerHouse Church Failure – Every man I know is terrified of this! Many men don’t pursue their dreams for a fear of failing. Many men who failed end up derailed from chasing their dreams and fulfilling their destiny. Why do men fear failure so much? What is it about failure that holds us back or holds us under? There are lots of reasons why, but if we are honest failure is just part of life. If you attempt anything your going to fail a few times. So rather than attempting to live a life without failure (which I believe is impossible), we need to focus on how to recover from failure. Its inevitable that you will make mistakes, its not about being perfect its about being able to pick back up and continue the race that God has set out for you. Here are three steps to recovering from failure. Step 1: Take responsibility “When I was a child, I spoke like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I gave up childish ways.” – 1 Corinthians 13:11 Stop blaming everyone else for the failure and just own it. Taking responsibility for our decisions is a rare quality these days. Dr. Edwin Louis Cole says, “Maturity doesn’t come with age but with the acceptance

of responsibility”. The real issue with not taking responsibility is that it prolongs the process to getting back on track. You can’t put it behind you because you keep stewing on who is to blame. The key is moving past the failure. Take an inventory. What did you learn from the failure? What Continued on page 21

can you do different next time? Then, suck it up and drive on! Lets make a decision today to take responsibility. Step 2: Repent “Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you.” – Colossians 3:13 Sometimes our failures are due to mistakes that we make. When this happens we must admit to them and reconcile with those that the mistakes affected. I have seen two extremes happen when mistakes are made. We can swing towards guilt and shame. This causes us to feel unworthy of forgiveness which leads us to shrink back and try to blend into the shadows. That is not what God thinks about you! No matter how bad you think you have blown it, God is ready to receive you back when you return to him in your heart. The other extreme is pride. When we swing this way, we refuse to repent because it may make us look weak. Pride, if allowed, can keep you from reaching your destiny. Both extremes are strategies and snares of the devil to keep you from relationship. First to keep you from a relationship with God and second to keep you from relationships with those around you. Don’t give the devil a foothold! Be quick to repent, forgive and reconcile. Step 3: Start doing the right thing “And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.” – Colossians 3:17 Attitude, Attitude, Attitude! It will determine your altitude! It’s not just about doing the right thing, but its doing the right thing with the right motive. Your motive will motivate others not just your actions. Its motive mixed with actions that inspires! Make a decision today to live an inspiring life. Whatever you put your hand to, do it excellent and with a great attitude.

Side or Tummy Sleeping? By Dr. Krishnakumari Kanesan Dear Doctor: My baby will only sleep on his side or stomach. Should I let him? Dear Parent: We often hear this question. Parents are concerned because they have heard about Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) and suffocation. SIDS is the leading cause of death for infants one to 12 months old. It is not known what causes SIDS, but since the Safe to Sleep campaign (formerly known as the Back to Sleep campaign) began in 1994, the number of cases has steadily declined. The recommendation from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) is to always place your baby on his or her back to sleep. UT Physicians follows the NIH recommendations to decrease your baby’s risk for SIDS and other sleep-related causes of infant death: • Use a firm sleep surface, such as a mattress in a safety-approved crib, covered by a fitted sheet • Do not use blankets, pillows or crib bumpers • Keep soft toys and bedding out of the crib • Do not smoke or let anyone smoke around your baby • A baby should not sleep in an adult bed • Make sure nothing covers the baby’s head • Do not let your baby get too hot while sleeping

If your baby enjoys spending time on their stomach, be sure to add some tummy time during the day. While you are watching closely, place your baby on their tummy to help promote stronger neck and shoulder muscles. It also helps them build towards other milestones such as sitting up and crawling. Krishnakumari Kanesan, M.D., is a pediatrician at UT Physicians Pediatric Center – Cinco Ranch located at 10450 Spring Green Blvd. Katy, TX 77494. To schedule an appointment, call 713-486-5870.

Saved: How a Grizzly Attack Led to One Man’s Peace By Dr. Rebecca Deurlein Jim VanSteenhouse went hunting for moose and instead found himself in an upclose encounter with a grizzly bear. “You want to make God laugh? Tell him your plans,” a quote VanSteenhouse - “The Bear Man” - lived first hand. And now he shares his story around Texas and beyond to encourage men to evaluate their priorities and their relationship with God. His true story is much more fantastic than fiction. It began in September, 2015, when Jim took off for a moose hunting adventure in the Northwest Territory of Canada. He was excited to hunt big game using his preferred method, a bow and arrow, in a highly remote area. Jim traveled by plane, float plane, and finally helicopter, where he was dropped into his hunting location with his young guide, Jordan. On the first day, the men noticed giant grizzly paw prints in a soft embankment. The next day, Jim and Jordan spotted a grizzly along the tree line of a nearby ridge. That night, they hustled back to camp because, as Jordan explained, “When the sun goes down, we’re on the menu.” On the third day, Jim spotted a beautiful moose and the excitement for the hunt grew. He awoke on the fourth day to cold temperatures and piled on his clothes, ready to go after that moose. That day did not go as planned. “I was sitting on a ridge with Jordan discussing how we were going

to open a can of tuna, when I noticed Jordan’s stricken face. He was looking over my shoulder, white as a ghost. I slowly turned, and there was a grizzly, two to three yards away. I glanced back at Jordan to see if he had Continued on page 27

shouldered his gun, and that’s when I felt the bear on me. I remember covering my head with my hands and rolling into the fetal position. Then I felt the bones in my skull cracking, my fingers breaking, before the bear moved down my body. I felt myself being shaken like a rag doll in the bear’s jaws, and I figured I was a goner.” The grizzly had carried Jim 50 yards away and was about to go in for the kill when Jordan managed to fire the shot that stopped him. The next thing Jim remembers is thinking it must be raining, then realizing blood was pouring from his head. He inventoried his hands to find his fingers

going in all directions, all of his bones broken. “Then I looked down at my body,” he said, “and it looked like I had been attacked by Edward

Scissorhands. I was a shredded, bloody mess.” Because of their remote location and the rescue effort required to get Jim to a city with a hospital, he had plenty of time to think during transport. “Forget about the fact that I was already in shock from the attack. The real anxiety came when I realized I would probably die and I had no idea whether I would actually go to heaven. I was panicking thinking that I wasn’t good enough, that this might truly be the end for me. That’s when I felt the Holy Spirit move inside of me and it was as if Jesus came down and sat in the back of the chopper with me, and said, ‘Look, you’ve accepted me as your Lord and Savior. You’ll never be adequate on your own. Your adequacy comes through me.’ It was as if someone covered me with a warm wool blanket. I’ve never felt peace like that. At that point, all anxiety was gone. I watched the mountains through the chopper window and witnessed God’s glory.” The impact of Jim’s experience manifested itself during his recovery Continued on page 29

in the hospital when, for the first time in his life, he felt called to pray with the patient sharing his room. “Praying alone, yes. Praying out loud over another person? That was new to me and it was scary. But I felt called to do it, and after I finished, that grumpy man looked up at me and said, ‘Thank you. That’s the first time anyone has ever prayed for me.’” “That’s what this experience has done for me. I went from a back seat to a front seat Christian,” Jim said. “Now when I speak to men, I try to get them to see how precious life is. As men, how many dance recitals and football games have we missed? That bear ripped me apart for 90 seconds. If you only had 90 seconds left to think about it, what do you wish you would have done differently?” Jim continued, “We have no control over time. Matthew 24:42 tells us that we don’t know which day the Lord is coming. Stick a toothpick in water and then pull it out. How much did you change that water? That’s exactly how much control you have over your time on this Earth. So we need to quit majoring in the minors and minoring in the majors. We need to concentrate on what’s important.” Jim no longer worries about his salvation. In fact, he already has an idea about the afterlife. “When I go to heaven, I’m hoping there will be a grizzly standing before me and Jesus reminding me of His salvation when I needed it the most. Then I’m hoping to meet the individuals who accepted Jesus after hearing my story.”

Like a Good Neighbor, Father Paul and His Church Are There By Jessa McClure When Father Paul Wehner was growing up in the Episcopal Church, he could imagine himself as the priest. But, as he grew, he felt overwhelmed by feelings of unworthiness. Why would God choose him to be His representative? So, years went by and he became a successful business man, married and raised a family. But his connection to the church never left his heart or his mind, and decades later when he was on assignment in Singapore, he finally felt God’s calling to the clergy. “Our time in Singapore allowed me to look at myself in a different light,” Father Paul said. “I was no longer so tied to my identity back in the States.” He became a lay leader in the church he attended overseas, and before he knew it he was the senior warden, acting as a spokesperson for

the congregation in the absence of the priest. “I worked very closely with the priest in encouragement and other interventions by the Holy Spirit which finally brought me to the conclusion that this was something I was called to do.” But, although the future Rector felt led to become a leader of the Episcopal Church, he would have to gain permission from the bishop in order to begin seminary. “I began that process in Singapore with the bishop of Singapore,” he said. “It was pretty different than the way it happens in the States. It was not nearly as formal. It was Saturday morning meetings at the bishop’s palace with six or seven other Singaporeans. I kind of stood out.” As soon as Father Paul returned to the states, he was given permission to begin his seminary training. He began his schooling in 1998, and spent the next three years gaining the knowledge he’d need to lead a congregation. When he was finished with his training, he was placed at a church in Beaumont where he spent two and a half years, culminating in a culmination in a call to be the Rector of Grace Episcopal Church in Galveston. “Rector implies that the church is self-sufficient and that you are the priest in charge,” he said. Eight years later, in 2011, a search committee from Calvary Episcopal

Church in Richmond invited him to come there. “It was a brave committee to ignore my age and invite me to come,” Father Paul said. “I knew it was where God wanted me to be.” Although he was confident that he was in the right place, Father Paul knew that becoming Calvary’s Rector would mean a lot more responsibility. Not only does he oversee two services on Sunday mornings and help with day-to-day activities of the church, he is also the chairman of the board of Calvary Episcopal Preparatory. “There are 200 kids on our campus here,” he said. “I make sure I walk through the halls and the kids all know who I am. I’m responsible for their Christian education.” Father Paul said Calvary’s school is one of the missions into the community that is directed towards the future. But the school isn’t the only way the Rector and his church make a difference in the surrounding area. “One or sometimes two weekdays a month, people of the community who are in need come in and meet with one of the ministers and tell their story, are listened to, and prayed for. Then, hopefully we can do something that helps them to some extent,” he said. The church also has partnerships with Friends of North Richmond, Attack Poverty, and serves alongside St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Continued on page 33

building homes for needy families through the Habitat for Humanity program. The Rector said creating relationships with other churches in the area is essential to the church’s mission to be a ‘good neighbor.’ This means helping tend a community garden with First Baptist Church of Richmond, taking over the entire Fort Bend County Meals on Wheels program on Thanksgiving Day each year, and participating

in the Adopt a Family program at Christmas time. “One of the things that’s most fulfilling is the relationship we have with the elementary school across the street,” Father Paul said. “We have a mentoring program where our members meet with children one time a week for 45 minutes.” The program has allowed the church to come in and volunteer and even bring treats for the teachers. The church members have also donated books for the school’s reading recovery program that helps first graders continue their reading progress over the summer. “We really do try to be good neighbors and participate in the community in a way that’s felt,” he said. “It’s not unique, but it’s important to us. It’s what we want our identity to be. We want to be known as a church with a big heart for others.” Calvary Episcopal Church has more than 200 people who come to worship on Sunday mornings, with more than 40 members playing a role in the service. The church is at 806 Thompson Rd in Richmond and services are at 8 and 10:30 a.m.

Good Bones By Caitlin Richards Recognizing good bones in a house comes easily for an architect. The historically registered Stewart-Lott House was an ideal choice for Don Purser, owner of Purser Architectural, to move his business to. “I have always wanted to have a historic home as an architect office,” Purser said. “The old historic home reflects our style and business tremendously well.” Purser Architectural used to operate out of an office in the Memorial area of Houston. It now operates out of the yellow historical home located at 5702 Fourth Street in downtown Katy. Local doctor James Stewart built the historic home in the early 1900’s to serve as his home and physician’s office, Purser recalled. Later on, the Lott family purchased the house and it remained in the family for several generations. The previous owners, who owned it for 17 years, happened to be one of Purser’s clients who he knew well and had developed a relationship with. With high hopes, Purser asked if they would be interested in selling the historic home and to his surprise they agreed. The historic home listed as atlas number 96000067 in the National

Register Listing is noted to be significant to the area because of its architecture and design. The Queen Anne architectural style appealed to Purser as well and will be preserved now, that an architectural business resides inside. The home was already functioning as an office building, rather than a home, when Purser purchased it, but it was in definite need of repair. Continued on page 39

Purser updated and refinished nearly every surface of the home from the siding and porch outside to the original hardwood floors, bathrooms and doors inside. Purser brought the entire building up to code for office use, even adding extra parking on the lot to the side of the house. Inside, Purser tried to keep it as original as possible. The bathrooms still include the original bathtubs, which Purser thought were so unique they had to be kept. The tile in the bathrooms and some light fixtures throughout the house are also the original to the home. The doors inside all needed to be replaced for functionality and code reasons. Only one of the doors was still original to the house. So, Purser took the original five-panel door and had it duplicated for all of the other doorways. “I have always loved houses,” Purser said. “Everybody lives in one. So when the historic home was available it Don Purser Angelica Garza was just exactly what I preferred over a new office structure building.” The renovations and updates took about three months but seemed much longer for Purser, who was ready to get in the space to continue Purser Architectural’s business. Moving to Katy allowed Purser to not only be closer to home but closer to a large base of his clients. Numerous residential and commercial

clients of Purser Architectural are in Katy and the greater area. “Everybody has been so welcoming,” Purser said. “We have people walk-in all the time curious about the home and the work we do. It is just a very friendly community. We are very proud to be here.” Purser is not a Katy native or local Houstonian. He grew up in San Angelo, Texas. He met his wife, who is a local Houstonian, at Texas Tech University while studying architecture. After graduation, he followed her to Houston to begin his architectural career and eventually their life together. At an early age, Purser was interested in doodling and sketching. It led to him working for an architect in San Angelo all throughout high school and then to Texas Tech to earn a degree in the trade. Purser has now been in the business for 40 years and owned his own firm for 36 years. “After those few early years, I felt like I could make it on my own with my own firm,” Purser said. “So I just kind of bit the bullet, dove in and never Franciso Lopez

Guillermo Sahagun

looked backed. The Lord has blessed me I can tell you that.” Purser revealed he never has spent much on marketing, because he has acquired most of his business by word of mouth through referrals from previous clients. Purser started the firm primarily has a residential architectural firm, where they designed custom homes. However, his book Continued on page 40

of work quickly expanded to commercial properties. “We do a tremendous amount of commercial work now because of a lot of my clients who we did houses for have come back,” Purser said. “They liked what we did with their house and want us to do the same for the dentist offices or office buildings.” Purser Architectural has designed dental offices, medical facilities, and even a trampoline park and winery. The work Purser enjoys the most though is the residential home design. He has designed homes from 5,000 square-feet to 36,000 square-feet. “When I sit down with a client and design with them, I think of it like a three-dimensional puzzle,” Purser said. “They tell me all of the things they like and want, and I put all of the pieces together.” Each project is so different for Purser. Even though he is designing house after house, he is never bored. Everyone has a different style and wishes. “The rewarding part is that you start out with just ideas,” Purser said. “Then you put them on paper, then in graphic form and then after that process you get to see it grow out of the ground.” Purser still considers what he does as fun and not work after all of

these years. From his reputation and even his office building, it is evident Purser cannot only design good bones but pick them too. To find out more about Purser Architectural visit purserarchitectural.com.

business SPOTLIGHT

SUZANNE BRUCE & ASSOCIATES DERMATOLOGY OFFICE

You will find their offices on the third floor of a green building (LEED Gold Registered) on Kingsland Boulevard, and from the moment you step off the elevators you are impressed with a beautiful, healthy environment. Decorated with art from a local artist, Dixie Friend Gay, you can’t help but get vibes of the Katy Prairie. Unlike other offices, here board-certified dermatologists perform most of the cosmetic procedures. Their philosophy is to provide services to their patients that result in healthy and beautiful skin. From medical care that treats a range of skin conditions, such as acne and skin cancers to cosmetic anti-aging therapies, they have the latest equipment and training to treat their fellow Katy residents.

(Left to Right) Dr. Pauline Scott • Dr. Suzanne Bruce • Dr. Kenne Ogunmakin

One of the things that makes this dermatologists’ office different from others is their involvement with the local community. Look for Dr. Suzanne Bruce, Dr. Kenne Ogunmakin and Dr. Pauline Scott at Katy and Cinco Ranch events, and you will see them there sponsoring the sunscreen booth. They also volunteer to see Christ Clinic patients in need of skin care. During our visit, Dr. Scott explains how important sun safety is. She lives in Cinco Ranch and sees many residents who were never taught just how powerful a little bit of sunscreen can be. She shares, “Not only can it help protect against the dangers of skin cancer, but also it can delay premature aging, such as wrinkles, dark spots and dull-looking skin.” Dr. Ogunmakin points out, “All adults should be doing annual skin checks, too. We can often catch things before they become really problematic.”

The lobby at Suzanne Bruce and Associates is located on the 3rd floor of the state-of-the-art Katy Medical Plaza Building A - two blocks west of Grand Parkway on Kingsland Blvd.

Suzanne Bruce & Associates - Dermatology offers a wide range of cosmetic treatments, from well-known basics, such as Botox® and a variety of fillers, to high-tech skin resurfacing and tightening treatments. Dr. Bruce stresses, “It is all about preventive care. Start with a skincare regimen with scientifically proven ingredients. Then just doing simple treatments early at the first signs of aging can really pay dividends in the end.” Dr. Bruce, Dr. Ogunmakin and Dr. Scott are board-certified dermatologists and see patients of all ages for cosmetic and medical dermatology concerns at Suzanne Bruce and Associates - Dermatology located at 23510 Kingsland Blvd., Suite #300, Katy, Texas 77494.

Fitness Studio Owner’s Faith-Focused Approach Helps Clients Reach ‘The Summit’ By Jessa McClure Fulshear fitness studio owner, Jason Harley was a seasoned athlete when he came to Abilene Christian University in 2004. He landed a spot on the football team, and spent the next three years being physically active on a regular basis. But, when he decided not to play football during his senior year to focus on his degree in Exercise and Sports Science, Harley noticed that he was gaining weight. “The weight just packed on,” he said. “I was falling prey to the college lifestyle, eating at all times of the day and looking to the dollar menu for my meals.” Harley soon found himself at 265 pounds with a 40-inch waist, and he knew he had to make a change. “I started cutting things out of my diet and going to the gym again,” he said. “I went from 265 pounds to 210 pounds over the course of five or six months.” With his own transformation story, a degree in Exercise and Sports Science and a passion for helping others achieve their goals, Harley planned to one day open his own fitness studio. His first professional job out of college was with a medical-based fitness center, where he worked with clients with an array of medical conditions and previous injuries.

“My niche was weight loss clients and rehab-type clients,” he said. “I did some sports training, and I also started my own PE class for homeschooled children.” Continued on page 49

Harley said he especially enjoyed working with kids because he believes that if you get them in shape when they’re young, then they will grow up to be healthier adults. After five years with the medical-based fitness studio, the fitness expert followed one of his clients to another studio in Fulshear. Two years into his new position, the owners of the studio decided to sell the business. The sale was a dream come true for Harley, who was ready to run his own fitness center. “That’s kind of how The Summit was birthed,” he said. “The name represents the journey you take to reach a goal that you want to accomplish.

It’s going to get tougher, the air’s going to get thinner, and it’s going to get harder to breathe. But it’s worth it when you get to the top.” Harley said The Summit also pays tribute to Jesus going to the mountaintop to pray. “There’s a lot of victory that comes out of someone’s mountaintop experience,” he said. “Once they reach their mountaintop, they have the skills to help someone else reach their mountaintop.” The personal trainers at The Summit help their clients reach their goals with one-on-one, buddy or couple’s training, some small group classes, and sports training. But even though the focus of Harley’s business is health and fitness, he doesn’t forget the higher purpose God has given him. “I do this for my vision and for the people that He has placed in front of me,” he said. “Everyone who walks through the door is a blessing from God.” The fitness studio owner said he has had numerous opportunities to pray with his clients and do a lot of things that you wouldn’t see in a corporate setting. “Hopefully, when people come in they have a great time, meet some people, and get the results that they want,” Harley said. “We try to create a positive atmosphere where clients enjoy coming to work out.”

On Making Our Toddlers “Kindergarten Ready” By Jordan Harrell My 3-year-old loves baby dolls. Very rarely do we leave the house without one hooked under one little arm, a diaper bag dangling from the other. She wants to be a “mommy” when she grows up so that she can “go to the grocery store all by [her]self” and “do the dishes.” Girl’s got ambition — which I fully intend to exploit in 5-13 years. Taking care of her babies is just about the only activity that keeps her interest longer than five minutes. I remember being alarmed at her early disinterest in learning … or at least what we think of as learning. Charlee had always loved to read, but early on, Hattie would slam the cover shut any time I even tried to crack a book. And the few times I attempted to teach her sign language as a baby, she would scream at me and yank her hands away, as if she was trying to tell me, I do not have time for silly things like this. There’s a whole world out there to explore. While she can now engage long enough to complete a book or even a few (though she asks approximately 18,000 questions per page, some completely irrelevant), she’s still not interested in sitting down and working

for long stretches. Occasionally, against my better judgment, I get anxiety about the fact that she doesn’t know many letters or how to write her name or that she still Continued on page 24

gets that eleventeen-17 range jumbled when counting. I drive by the Montessori Preschools that I cant afford and think, “I should really work on preschool curriculum with Hattie so that she has a fighting chance…” But then I think back to my education degree and remind myself that Hattie just turned THREE, and this pressure that has been created to have my kids literate by the age of 4 and performing long-division by 5 and composing symphonies by 6 WAS NOT created by teachers or child development researchers but by the pressures of a flawed system and competitive parents. I remember one of my professors discussing the new environment into which we are sending our students. This is no longer a world in which students who “know the most” will be the most successful. Information is now immediately accessible, so education is less about “knowing stuff ” and more about creative thinking, application, cooperation, leadership skills, and all of that other intangible, “outside of the box” stuff. Guess what!? These are things cultivated in free play, not rigorous preschool curriculum. Then I think about my biblical duty as a momma: to make little, tiny Jesus impersonators. That changes things. Because Jesus is not remembered for his smarts but for his wisdom. He’s not remembered for his SAT score or for how many multisyllabic words he used in the Sermon on the Mount. He is remembered for his desperate pursuit of outcasts, his passionate cry for justice for the oppressed, and his counter-cultural inclusiveness — EVERYONE can be part of his club. What if we taught our kids that while academics are important, because working hard at everything we do is important, school is not just a means to a good career but an incredibly convenient mission field? They have an awesome opportunity to desperately pursue outcasts, passionately cry out for justice for the oppressed, and be counter-culturally inclusive — make sure EVERYONE is a part of the club. They get to BE Jesus to the lost and lonely every single day. And if schools are anything like they were 4 years ago when I taught, there are PLENTY of lost and lonely. Continued on page 54

When we push academic success at such an early age (or at any age), not only do our children lose valuable time to play and learn through osmosis, but we can unintentionally put SMART on a pedestal, high above KIND, SELFLESS, or COMPASSIONATE. While at a bible study on motherhood, our incredibly wise mentor mom said, “When I walk into a parent-teacher conference, I push all the papers aside, and say, ‘I don’t want to know about grades. I know their grades. We can fix grades. I want to know what kind of person they are when they aren’t with me. I want to know if they are kind. I want to know if they play with the lonely kids at recess. I want to know if they sit with

the lonely kids at lunch.” What are our goals for our children? In the long run, are we just dying for them to be rich and famous? To be the CEO of a company? Is financial success at the top of our priority list? If not (or even if so), let’s just let our three-yearolds play. Let’s all just calm the heck down about Kindergarten readiness, because if you’re worried about your baby being ready, that’s a good sign that he will be ready. Instead, let’s make sure they know that sharing is JUST AS important as counting, cooperating is JUST AS important as phonics, that we care more about them being like Jesus than we do about them knowing a lot of stuff. Let’s show our kids that we care more about them being the kindest than we do about them being the smartest. While I was agonizing over this article and trying to figure out how to say what I wanted to say, I flipped over to Facebook for a second so that I could stop using my brain for a hot second and THIS was the first thing that popped up: It was as if God was saying, YES. THIS is a message that you need to share. Thanks Jenn for posting — you were unknowingly encouraging me. Jordan and her husband Clark live in Sealy, TX with their three kids, ages 4, 3, and 1. She is a teacher turned stay-at-home-mom and attempts to blog on the blessed occasion that all three kids’ naps align. Creating a Home with Tista’s Fine Furniture By Caitlin Richards There is more to a home than four walls. The people who reside inside make the home, but there is something also else that makes a home - furnishings. At Tista’s Fine Furniture, Owner Deborah Bautista has made it her life mission to help others create the feeling of home inside the walls of their home. Deborah has over 35 years of experience in the furniture business. She has worked for several furniture businesses, including several big-box stores. After years of seeing those businesses put their commission before their customer, she decided to start her own business. “My goal is to treat other people how I want to be treated,” Deborah said. “I wanted to offer customers something better.” Tista’s Fine Furniture opened in 2006 off of Grand Parkway, but recently to moved to the downtown Katy area. Since the move, they have been enjoying the small town atmosphere and friendly community of the area. From Tista’s 5,000 customers, they have delivered pieces to Florida, Colorado, California, Canada and even overseas. “We’ve had previous customers call us after they have been transferred overseas to help them find furniture for their new home,” Deborah said. “We are kind of like a family. Tista’s offers items in all price ranges to meet any customer’s needs. No matter what the price tag says, the piece of furniture, accessory or mattress will be of the highest quality available. It is extremely important to Deborah and her team to help customers select furniture that will provide for them for years to come. “People work hard for their money,” Deborah said. “They should get something that will last a long time.” Tista’s even offers a free inhome design service for customers. Deborah or someone from her team will come to a customer’s home and conduct a consultation so they can help the customer find the perfect piece for their home. Whether it is one room or the entire home, they will assist with it all. “Most furniture stores could careless about the customer when they walk into the door,” Deborah said. “They are focused on getting a commission. We really enjoy taking time with our customers to get the right piece for them.” Tista’s strives to find the best bargain and deal for their customers as well. With Deborah’s experience, she has discovered the best bargain sources and closeouts, and wants to extend those to her customers. “We try to build something really special for them, yet keep them in their budget,” Deborah said. “It’s a big deal to us to keep the customer in their budget. We really care and want to work with our customers.” Not only does Tista’s offer a variety of exceptional home furnishings, they also frequently stage homes for a group of relators. With Deborah’s keen eye for home furnishing design, she helps families sell their homes

by making them look their best. In some cases, Deborah has generously offered her staging services at no cost to help families in financial stress sell their homes quickly. Tista’s charitable activity doesn’t stop there though. Not only is Tista’s involved with several local organizations, like Katy Independent School District’s mentorship program, but she gives directly to those in need through the Help a Sister Out Resale Shop. “Those women are amazing,” Deborah said. “They have helped build houses for battered and less fortunate women, and they do a lot of other great stuff for them.” Deborah supports the organization by donating furniture to help furnish those homes. She also gives back to her customers in a special way. For several years, Tista’s hosts a customer appreciation night during the holiday season. Deborah goes out and shops for some of the most unique holiday decorations and then sells them at closeout prices at the event. “It is really a fun event,” Deborah said. “People get very excited about it and the greatest thing is they are getting 80 to 90% off decorations before the holidays, not after. I just love it.” A good way to keep up with everything Tista’s is doing is by signing up for their email newsletter on their website tistashome.com. Most families have that one aunt or person who has en eye for design and spectacular taste. They help find the perfect piece for that particular place at a great price. Well, that is what it is like when you shop at Tista’s Fine Furniture. They care more about the customer than the commission and enjoy spending time with the customer to select a unique piece from the wide variety of selections. Give Deborah and her team a call at 281-347-5289 or stop by 5315 Highway Blvd. Katy, Texas 77494 to take a look and experience the difference at Tista’s.

Local Realtor and Author Works to Remove Mental Illness Stigma and Bring Hope to the Hopeless By Jessa McClure Local Realtor, Joe Gorczyca grew up in a large family in St. Louis, Missouri. Although many of his relatives struggled with mental illness, they were always a very loving family. “Being part of a family with special needs was one of the things that formed who I am,” he said. “I grew up with a strong awareness of caregiving.” Even though he was still playing an active role in caring for some of his family members, Gorczyca got a degree in Computer Science and landed a job with Conoco in Houston, TX, where he relocated and raised his family. He later served as VP, Global HR for BMC Software and built a successful career in the Houston area. But as he contemplated plans for the future, he knew that he wanted to give back with his time and money. His faith had always played a huge part in his life and career, and as he studied Mark 12:30 (Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength), he knew God had big plans for his second act. “As a member of Second Baptist Church of Houston, I facilitate and lead a support group for individuals who are dealing with depression and anxiety,” Gorczyca said. “That’s something I do to

help in reaching out to others who don’t have somebody to talk to or don’t know where to get help.” He said it is especially important that the individuals who come to the support group get a Christian perspective because it’s a true foundation for those dealing with mental illness. Because of his family history and work with those at the church, Gorczyca also authored a book called “Brain Pain,” that tells the story of his family’s history and offers ways to understand and cope with the challenges of mental disorders. “I wanted to write the book to say that people need to talk about this and seek help,” he said. “I want to remove the stigma attached to mental illness.” He is also actively involved in raising awareness, especially amongst his extended family. His five grown children and seven grandchildren all live in the Houston area, along with several of his nieces and nephews. He wants them to be educated on mental Continued on page 68

disorders so they can be supportive of family members with special needs. Joe equips others by offering the verse, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me,” (Phillipians 4:13). “That’s been very helpful to people who ask, ‘what’s God say that can help me?’” he said. life changes. “People buying or a selling a home are often looking to move because of a major life change or a family need,” he said. “Once I help them with this process, I donate a portion of the money to the Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance of Greater Houston.” Gorczyca said God places families in his path, both through his work with his support groups and in his real estate career that can benefit the most from his experiences and expertise. “I recently shared with a [client] about my work with the mental health support groups and that it was something really special to me,” he said. “The client said, ‘you are a God send.’” The man explained to Joe that his brother was struggling with mental illness and was no longer able to live on his own and would be moving to an assisted living facility. That meant he needed to sell his home quickly. “He asked if I could help him, and I said, absolutely. This would be very special to me to help you out,” he said. Along with his wife, who runs a successful home-staging business, Gorczyca was able to help the family ready the home for a sale. “I listed the house and got five offers in one day,” he said. “They were able to accept one of the offers and will be closing very soon. It was such a phenomenal situation of God putting me in the right place at the right time for this family.” The Realtor has also been able to continue his support of family members who still struggle with mental health issues. He has served as a guardian for two of his siblings and is working to establish a trust to make sure they are taken care of even after he is no longer here. “It’s interesting because, despite all of the challenges, the issues my family has faced have actually brought us closer together in a very loving

Politics As It Should Be By Gary Gillen Many Americans are frustrated by the slow pace in Washington. We elected Republican majorities in the House and Senate and a Republican President because this nation so desperately needs change. The liberal media has made much of the fact that the current administration, in the first six months of its term has not “repealed and replaced” the job killing Obamacare and rewritten the tax code. Those promises, therefore, were “lies.” They don’t want the Trump administration to succeed so they aren’t telling you that the Democratic Party, in its inexorable move to socialism, class warfare and identity-politics, has ceased to be a “loyal opposition” and has become the party of resistance, even though it hurts the very Americans they claim to want to help. No one dislikes the staggering premiums or the breathtaking deductibles Obamacare has wrought more than I do. I feel for my employees who have insurance but cannot afford to use it. The Democrats created this monster by forcing it down our throats without discussion, debate or even letting us read it. It is now failing in a most dramatic fashion with one third of all counties in the US having only one health insurance provider. No competition means higher premiums and deductibles. As of this writing the Senate has approved only 46 of the 178 appointees

Trump has submitted to the Senate. By this time in his first term Obama had 183 confirmed. Our government agencies are, by and large, run by Obama appointees and the Senate Democrats are using parliamentary games to stop or slow the appointments process. The liberal media also won’t tell you about the regulations the Continued on page 74

Obama administration put in place without Congressional input, without legally required public comment and without concern for the jobs, industries and lives those regulations destroyed. Our previous President bragged he would rule with “a phone and a pen” while our current President wants to use the Constitution and Congress. The way it was meant to be; messy, slow, open and even painful. Our forefathers envisioned government that guaranteed the right of minorities to be heard but the majority’s right to govern. Sadly, Congress has transferred much of its authority to Federal agencies rather than make tough choices. This enabled President Obama to make sweeping changes by royal fiat. The courts have already begun to turn back some of the most egregious of those rules and the Trump Administration has begun to roll back many as well. This might be an appropriate time to educate our young and remind ourselves that governing isn’t instant like Amazon or Uber, and it shouldn’t be. Government should be slow and deliberate. Our representatives should consider, think and debate. They should hear the minority viewpoint and consider their concerns but they should not surrender to the popular or trendy. The majority should rule. Our constitution starts simply, “We the People.” The words “elite, East Coast, or Liberal” do not appear yet those of us in “fly-over” country seem to be dismissed and ignored regularly. We should also remind our children that they will not always get what they want. Perhaps they should consider

that what they want isn’t always what’s best for them. Republicans must fix this Democratic mess but let’s do it the right way.

Recipe: Mexican Tempeh Quinoa Salad Ingredients • 1 cup quinoa • 2 cups water • 1 tbsp. olive oil • 1/2 onion, chopped • 1 red pepper, diced • 1 (8-oz.) package tempeh, diced into bite-size pieces • 1 cup salsa • Juice from one lime • 1 tsp. cumin • 1/4 tsp. cayenne pepper • 1/4 tsp. salt • 1/4 tsp. pepper • 1 (15-oz.) can black beans, drained and rinsed • 1 cup fresh corn • 1/2 cup cherry tomatoes, halved • 2 tablespoons fresh cilantro • Salt and pepper, to taste • 1 avocado, diced

Directions 1. Place the quinoa and water in a covered pot on high heat. Once it starts to boil, reduce to simmer and cook for 20 minutes or until the water is absorbed and the quinoa is fluffy. 2. While the quinoa is cooking, prepare the tempeh. Heat the oil in a pan on medium heat, and add the chopped onion. Cook for 5 minutes. 3. Add the diced red pepper, tempeh, salsa, lime juice, cumin, cayenne pepper, and salt and pepper.

The Bible Seminary 2655 S Mason Rd Katy, TX 77450

4. Cook the tempeh mixture, stirring occasionally, for about 15 minutes. 5. Once the quinoa and tempeh are cooked, pour both into a glass bowl and mix together. Add the beans, corn, tomatoes, cilantro, and a little salt and pepper, and mix well. Serve and top with a few pieces of diced avocado. 6. Enjoy as is, or use as a delicious filling for burritos. Yield: 4 to 6 servings. Cook Time: 45 mins. 281-646-1109 (Phone) 281-646-1110 (Fax) info@TheBibleSeminary.org
