Wow. It’s hard to believe that summer is almost over! I pray that you have had a wonderful summer thus far, and spent plenty of quality time with your families. My youngest son, Jeremiah, is about to start his senior year of high school and my baby Naomi is entering her sophomore year. Where does the time go? In this issue, we are featuring an article on a very good friend of mine, Tracy Walker. Tracy is a wonderful person with many involvements. She is the owner of her own State Farm Insurance agency in Sugar land, a Rotarian, and an outstanding Christian. She is also a single mother of three remarkable children. However, recently Tracy was diagnosed with Stage IV cancer in her liver and pancreas. I encourage you, our faithful readers, to keep her in your prayers. The article in this issue will fill you in on further details to her plight. I also have another urgent prayer request for one of our magazine’s talented writers, Jessa McClure. Jessa joined our staff a little over two years ago and is the wife of a pastor. She truly understands what it means to let the life of Christ shine through her. The articles that she writes for our magazines are inspirational. Jessa was recently diagnosed with a brain tumor. Thankfully it is not cancerous. However, because of its size and position inside of her brain, it does require surgery. Once again, I call to you, our readers, to keep this remarkable woman of God in your prayers. On a brighter note, Fort Bend Christian magazine is celebrating our Second Anniversary with this issue. We would like to thank all of you for making us a success! For going on two years, we’re proud to bring you a Christ-focused and family oriented magazine. We’re able to deliver this loving message because of our advertisers, and want our readers to support those advertisers you see in our publications. Please be sure to let them know you appreciate the fact that they advertise with us, and let them know where you saw their ad. Have a wonderful Labor Day and may the Lord richly bless you! Joseph R. Top-Rated Chiropractor Eases Patients’ Pain with Latest Techniques, Positive Environment By Jessa McClure When Dr. Bill Sheppard was being life flited to a nearby hospital after a serious motorcycle accident, he had no idea that this moment would be the beginning of a career in chiropractic medicine that would not only give him self-fulfillment, but also help to change the lives of patients all over Texas. “I’ve been to lots of medical doctors,” Sheppard said. “I broke 29 bones in my accident, had 24 surgeries, and was in the hospital for three-and-a-half months. Medical doctors put me back together.” But even though Sheppard felt gratitude towards the medical professionals who helped put him back on his feet again, it was the chiropractor he saw during his recovery that made a huge impact on his life. “[The chiropractor] sat down and spoke to me on my level,” he said. “He explained things very simplistically and spent quite a bit of time with me answering my questions. I was at complete ease.” Sheppard had always wanted to be a doctor, but after his experience with the chiropractor he began to question his career path. For a while he left the medical world and worked as a flight attendant for Southwest Airlines. Although it wasn’t related to medicine, he loved how the company treated its employees and created a fun and helpful environment. Sheppard knew that if he ever had the chance to run his own business, he’d use the airline’s

model. While working for Southwest, Sheppard met a woman who was married to a chiropractor. “I spoke with [her husband] on the phone and he was very excited about what he did and how many people he’d helped. So, I thought, maybe I’ll got to chiropractic school.” That’s exactly what Sheppard did. And when he graduated he gave his co-worker’s spouse a call to help him find the right clinic to begin his career. Soon, the new graduate was being assigned to a clinic in Katy. “The doctor there had moved on to bigger and better things, so I was told I would be running the clinic,” he said. “I told him I had no idea what I was doing, but he said oh, you’ll be fine.” The clinic Sheppard was gifted was, in his opinion, one of the worst clinics in the company. “But, in a relatively short amount of time, I turned the clinic into the number one clinic in the corporation.” Today, Sheppard owns his practice, and has created an environment that utilizes the friendly atmosphere he experienced at Southwest Airlines, and the attentive bedside manner of his first chiropractor. “I’m very good at what I do,” he said. “I’m not sure why. It comes very easy to me to diagnose

Baseball Legend Nolan Ryan Says... “When we replaced our windows with the Simonton windows, they blended with the house really well. We like the insulating factor that we get, especially in Texas, with the heat we have in the summertime and the drop in temperature that we get in the winter. The windows we had previously didn’t hold up well and didn’t do the job that we wanted from an insulating factor. Ruth chose the color, and we were really pleased with the way they turned out because we had a darker window before.”

patients, treat them and get them feeling better. [Patients] are just amazed and think it’s the best thing in the world.” The chiropractor, who has been practicing for 15 years, said he recently had a patient come into his office who had been hurting for months and several medical imaging techniques couldn’t find the cause. “I told him, hey, this is what’s going on,” he said. “After one visit he said, I haven’t felt this good in months. I told him the more we work on you the better you’re going to feel.” Not only can Sheppard diagnose and treat patients with ease, but he can also sympathize with those who are working and living with pain and discomfort. “I know what they’re going through. I’ve been on the other end,” he said. “Sometimes I share that with my patients and assure them that I know how they’re feeling.” Sheppard’s five-star treatment and positive attitude have made him a popular pick among professional athletes, wrestlers, BMXers and other high-profile clients. But even though Sheppard has worked with the rich and powerful, he treats every patient with the same amount of love and respect. He wants each patient’s experience to be a positive

one. “I love to laugh, so we are always cutting up in our clinic,” he said. “We’re always having fun with our patients.” Not only can patients count on lots of laughs when they are seen at the United Chiropractic Clinic, but they can also count on the latest and greatest equipment and techniques. “I have DRX spinal decompression machines to help patients with disc bulges in their neck or back,” he said. “It’s rated the number one way to fix a disc over any other treatment. That’s why I have so many orthopedic [surgeons] sending patients to me.” Along with these specialized machines, Sheppard also employs several certified masseuses and can explain to patients how to stretch at home for continued pain relief. “If you’ve got the sniffles, a cough or a cold, then by all means, go see a medical doctor,” Sheppard said. “But if it’s your neck, back, shoulders or knees, then come to me. I’ll fix you.” If you are interested in the services that Dr. Bill Sheppard provides, please contact his office at (281) 392-6550.

Pastor Focuses on Transforming Families and Multiplying Missionaries By Jessa McClure Kingsland Baptist Church senior pastor, Ryan Rush, was just 14 when he felt called to ministry. And just one year later, he surrendered to that call by securing a job as a music minister at a small country church. So, while his friends were worrying about dating and what to do on a Saturday night, Rush was scribbling down chord progressions and finding songs to speak to the hearts of the church’s small group of believers. “I even had to get my hardship license to drive myself to my job,” Rush said. “But it was a great experience, and I’ve been in ministry ever since.” A few years passed, and Rush moved from his Texas home to Lynchburg, VA where he attended Liberty Baptist Theological Seminary. It was here that Rush became the family pastor of the historic Thomas Road Baptist Church. Rush learned a great deal during his time in Virginia; enough to write two books, Home On Time: Life Management by the

Book and Walls: Why Everybody’s Stuck (and Nobody Has to Be), and host numerous radio and television programs. After many years in his second home, Rush returned to his Texas roots and became the senior pastor of Bannockburn Baptist

Church in Austin. “I was the pastor there for a little over a decade when I received a call from Kingsland Baptist Church,” Rush said. “At first I said I wasn’t really interested, but the more I looked at it, the more I realized that this is what God had for us. And I’m so glad I did.” Rush knew Kingsland Baptist Church was the right fit after hearing about the church’s two biggest passions – families and missions. So, he packed up his family and moved them to Katy where they would begin their new ministry journey. Even though Rush was an experienced family pastor and had his own dreams for his new church, he said that he was determined not to get in the way of what was already happening at Kingsland. “My most important role is establish a vision [for the church] and help people pray towards that,” he said. “Over the last year-and-a-half we’ve really been asking the Lord to help us see 10,000 homes be transformed by the Love of Jesus Christ.” Rush believes the congregation can accomplish this by introducing the image of God into every home. “If you look back in Genesis, God made man in his own image and then created a family,” he said. “So, throughout the rest of the Bible he shows himself in family terms. If the family is messed up, it is difficult to understand the nature of God.” Having experienced hardship inside of a family can leave people comparing those who have wronged them with their Heavenly father. If you didn’t experience faithfulness, graciousness, and love in your home, than it might be difficult to believe

God can give you those things. That’s why Rush and his team have come up with specific ways to transform households. “We want to invite families to have three meaning mealtimes a week,” he said. “If they can put down the electronics and have conversations, it can make a huge difference. “ The pastor believes that his other passion, missions, coincides with the church’s desire to transform homes and families. “Right now we have groups of students out of every grade level who are serving everywhere from inner-city Houston to Arlington, Chicago to New Orleans, to Nicaragua,” Rush said. “When [the students] get to see the global need, it impacts how they think about missions and their role in their kingdom when they return home.” Kingsland Baptist Church donated more than a million dollars last year to missions, and their hope is that by changing the lives of people in their surrounding community and their global community will help to equip families to raise champions for Christ. Rush is also seeing the church through an expansion that will hopefully give the congregation of over 3,000 a second campus to reach even more families. “We believe the best churches in Katy are yet to be planted,” he said. “And we want to be a part of what God is doing.” You can find the passionate pastor, alongside wife Lana, and daughters Ryley, Reagan and Lily, on Sunday mornings at all three services – 8:30, 9:30, and 11:00 a.m. at Kingsland Baptist Church at 20555 Kingsland Blvd. in Katy.

Honor @ Home: The Missing Link By Pastor Jorge Cardenas Good relationships are based upon the value of honor. Honor is the missing link in our society these days. It appears that in times of elections, candidates have a way of dishonoring one another as much as possible in order to get votes. In spite of this, voters still elect these people regardless of their character. These elected officials usually create an atmosphere of smooth rhetoric and all the while voters fall for their tricks. Unfortunately dishonor is not limited to politics or media circles. It happens in the realm of family and the everyday work place. If people appreciated the value of honor, there would be less divorce,

violence, bankruptcy, moral failure, division and the like. Honor should be a priority in our relationships. First, we must honor God before we honor people. The time we spend before his presence in prayer is a very exclusive way in which we honor our Heavenly Father. The Bible gives us guidelines and a perfect perspective regarding the utmost importance of honor. When we follow the principles of God’s Word, we inherit blessings that will last a lifetime. Jesus’ central message and mission were based on honoring his Father in heaven. Reading God’s Word and actually applying it is a matter of honoring Him. Loving God translates into obedience to His Truth. As we respond to his Word in obedience, we are actually praising our loving Father with the honor that only He deserves. When we relate to others according to his principles, we allow honor to flow in all our relationships. When honor is practiced, our lives and the lives of others are enriched. The priority of honor in our horizontal relationships begins with the family. Husband and wife must practice a culture of honor at home. The husband must give himself to love and to honor his wife as the weaker vessel. The wife as a helpmate is there to respect and honor her husband. Healthy marriages understand the importance of honoring one another. When the little lady is treated like a queen, she is bound to treat the husband like a king. That’s what honor does. Parents must also learn ways to honor their children by providing a loving and disciplined environment. We should always respect and encourage the individuality our children. Their emotional health will grow in an atmosphere where honor is practiced. We must also honor our parents. God promises that if we honor our parents, we will have a good and lasting life (Ephesians 6:2-3). My father was a good son to my grandmother especially when she became a widow. He cared for her with love and compassion. Consequently, he outlived all his siblings to the age of 89. He died surrounded by the love of all his seven children. When you honor your parents, chances are that your children will see your example and follow it. Finally, God requires us to honor authorities, both civil and spiritual. God’s Word says, “Everyone must submit himself to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established.” (Romans 13:1). The authorities that exist have been established by God. Every day we see tragedy in the news due to someone failing to respect and honor authority. If we do not respect civil authority, chaos will be the result. Also, I may disagree with the policies of a president, but as a citizen I must honor and pray for him and for all my civil authorities. In church we must practice honor at all levels. We must especially honor our elders in the faith (1 Timothy 5:17 ). In every institution where honor is an active practice, the potential for growth and transformation is limitless. Can you practice honoring someone in your community today? Try it! You will not be disappointed with the results. “Therefore the Lord, the God of Israel, declares: ‘I promised that your house and your father’s house would minister before me forever.’ But now the Lord declares: ‘Far be it from me! Those who honor me I will honor, but those who despise me will be disdained.” – 1 Samuel 2:30 August / September 2016

Dear Doctor: What Should I Know About Robotic Surgery? By Dr. Peter Walker Robotic assisted minimally invasive surgery has been increasing in popularity over the last decade. It initially gained popularity amongst urologists for removal of the prostate and with gynecologists for hysterectomies. Over the recent years, it has been increasingly utilized in general and gastrointestinal surgery for a variety of procedures, including removal of the gallbladder, repair of hiatal/diaphragmatic hernias and surgery for heartburn and achalasia, weight loss surgery (sleeve gastrectomy, gastric bypass), resections of the stomach, surgery of the spleen, adrenal glands, pancreas and liver, hernia surgery as well as in colon and rectal surgery. In addition, single incision surgery can be performed using robotic surgery. Advantages of robotic surgery include precision, superior visualization, degrees of movement greater than that of the human wrist, and the ability to perform technically complicated operations through very small incisions. The robotic platform is a seamless extension of the surgeon’s hands and fingers. The surgeon is always in control and directs the movement of the robotic arms at each stage of the operation. When considering robotic assisted surgery, it is important to ensure that your surgeon has undergone extensive training and is experienced with robotic surgery. This can be accomplished through

fellowship training or completing an industry approved training program, which includes performing cases under the direction of an experienced robotic surgeon. The robotic surgery platform does not replace meticulous surgical technique or judgment. Dr. Peter Walker is a fellowship trained minimally invasive and robotic surgeon for the UT Health Science Center at Houston and provides patient care at UT Physicians at several locations in Katy including, Cinco Ranch located at 23923 Cinco Ranch Blvd., Katy, TX 77494. Cancer Patient Relies on Healthy Living, God to Bring Healing By Jessa McClure Friday night lights were burning brightly as Sugar Land resident, Tracy Walker, lie on the floor of her home with crippling pain. Her son was ready to take the field for his last football game of the season, but Walker couldn’t even stand. “My mom had driven up to see my son’s game and when she found me, she said, you need to go to the ER,” Walker said. The mother of three reluctantly went to the hospital where she underwent a CT scan. “They said, you have lesions on your pancreas and liver. I didn’t know what that meant,” she said. “They had given me some pain drugs so I was feeling better. And it was my son’s last football game, so I told them I’d go to [the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center] on Monday to get it checked out.”

But after the weekend, Walker was feeling better and decided to just follow up with her primary care doctor who ordered an MRI. The second scan showed fluid in her abdomen. The doctor then sent Walker to see her OB/GYN. “They also said I needed to go MD Anderson and that they would send my records over to the hospital,” Walker said. “So, I called the hospital and said, ‘let me know when you get the records,’ and sort of put it out of my mind.” A few weeks passed and Walker forgot about the records and the searing pain she’d endured. “I’m a single mom and I was worried about getting my numbers done for the first quarter of the year,” she said. “I was working, very stressed out and distracted.” But she couldn’t shut it out forever. It wasn’t long before the pain returned. “I called MD Anderson and they had never received my records,” she said. “Three days later they ordered a PET scan, and two days after that they told me I needed to come in and speak with an oncologist.” Terrified and still feeling poorly, Walker sat down in the oncologists office, waiting to hear the diagnosis. “[The doctor] said she thought I had pancreatic cancer, but they needed to be sure,” she said. Walker endured another procedure so the doctor could have a biopsy done on the affected areas. Two weeks later, Walker finally got the results she was dreading.

“She told me I had a rare type of pancreatic cancer. She said, with this type of cancer, surgery is number one,” she said.

Walker is still waiting for the surgery to happen, and as she waits, she prays that the cancer does not spread.

“If I had gone to MD Anderson back in November, maybe I’d only have two spots instead of five,” she said. But even though her diagnosis is serious, Walker truly believes that God will heal her. “I’m on so many prayer lists. I have prayer warriors praying for me.” She has also started listening to podcasts about cancer and learning all she can about boosting her immune system. “I’m taking a lot of supplements because I have to be at top shape when they do the surgery,” she said. “The surgery will have a huge impact on my immune system, and if it is already down, it could prompt more cancer cells to spread.” Walker is also drinking alkaline water, using essential oils, and working out with a rebounder to stimulate you lymphatic symptom. “I thank God for giving this to me because it really opened me up,” she said. “And even after surgery, I know I’m going to be okay because I know what to do to prevent it from coming back. I’ve learned my lesson.” Although she is doing whatever she can to strengthen her body before surgery, she has realized that she can’t rely completely on herself. “I’ve always been independent, and I’ve always wanted to do things myself,” Walker said. “This is the first time that God has taught me that I’m not an island. I don’t got this. He’s got this. And I believe that with God’s grace and power, I will be healed.”

Yes, You Are An Inspiration By Dr. Rebecca Deurlein Recently, I packed up my office at school to come home for the summer. I had collected cards and notes from students during the course of the year - thank you notes, Thanksgiving cards, and goodbye missives written by those same teenagers we all accuse of being self-centered. They’re not. Okay, sometimes they are. But they are also completely selfless when it comes to expressing their genuine gratitude. The two drawers in my nightstand contain enough evidence of teenage sweetness to dispel any rumors you may have heard of their apathy. They care, very much, especially about people who care about them. As I gathered each note, I re-read it, first with smiles, and then increasingly with awe. I noticed for the first time a pattern among the letters in a phrase I never expected to hear about myself: “You inspire me.”

Trust me, I’m not telling you this to boast or brag. Quite the opposite, actually. This was an incredibly humbling experience

for me. To be considered an inspiration to another human being - to several of them - is, as they used to say in the 70’s, heavy,

man. When I think of inspirational people, I tend to think of Mother Theresa, Olympic athletes, and soldiers. Certainly not myself. But when I really think about who has inspired me, personally, my single grandmother raising my mom on her own comes to mind. Then my mom. Then some amazing mentors I’ve had over the years. I’m not sure that any of them know they’ve inspired me, but they absolutely have. They have inspired me to work hard, persevere, be independent, think for myself, and never carry a grudge. As parents, you inspire your children. They may never tell you that, so I’m doing it for them. I had coffee with a young man today who would impress the socks off of you, and guess what? His parents have played a primary role in the man he is becoming. They’ve inspired him to communicate in healthy ways, to help those in need, and to know when to let go. He knows and respects their bottom line, and there’s not a doubt in my mind he will go on to inspire his own children one day. So what can you do specifically to make a lasting impact on

your kids? Try the following: 1. Be who you say you are. Teach your kids that authenticity is crucial to trust and and respect. 2. Live out your faith. Teach your kids that prayer, gratitude, and treating others as you would be treated are basic tenets of your life. 3. Give your kids - and everyone else in your life - the benefit of the doubt. Don’t expect them to mess up. Expect them to be amazing and then raise them to do just that. 4. Forgive those who have wronged you. Pick yourself up and move on. You won’t inspire anyone by holding onto bitterness and becoming a victim. 5. Always strive to be better. Set the example for your kids of lifelong learning, pursuit of mastery, and giving your all to a task. 6. Respect yourself. There’s no better way to model high standards and healthy relationships. 7. Be confident. If you know who you are, play to your strengths, and worry less about what others think, your kids will be much more likely to develop that same confidence.

8. Believe in your kids’ dreams. Be realistic, but let them know that you respect and support their dreams, especially when their dreams differ from yours. They need to know that their future is their own. 9. Have a sense of humor. When you can laugh at yourself, they learn not to take themselves and their problems so seriously. Humor puts everything in perspective. 10. Give them the security they need to fly. It seems paradoxical, but when they know you’re always there for them, that’s when they truly find their freedom. Inspire your kids today. Greatness doesn’t mean fame and fortune. It means being an inspiration to others. Estate Planning 101: To Probate or Not to Probate? It’s All in the Planning By Margie Connolly, Family and Estate Planning Attorney Probate court proceedings (during which a deceased person’s assets are transferred to the people who inherit them) can be long, costly, and confusing. It’s no wonder so many people take steps to spare their families the hassle. Different states, however, offer different ways to avoid probate. Here are your options in Texas. 1. Living trusts In Texas, you can make a living trust to avoid probate for virtually any asset you own -- real estate, bank accounts, ve-

hicles, and so on. You need to create a trust document (it’s similar to a will), naming someone to take over as trustee after your death

(called a successor trustee). Then -- and this is crucial -- you must transfer ownership of your property to yourself as the trustee of the trust. Once all that’s done, the property will be controlled by the

terms of the trust. At your death, your named successor trustee will be able to transfer it to the trust beneficiaries without probate court proceedings. 2. Joint ownership If you own property jointly with someone else, and this ownership includes the “right of survivorship,” then the surviving owner automatically owns the property when the other owner dies. No probate will be necessary to transfer the property, although of course it will take some paperwork to show that title to the property is held solely by the surviving owner. In Texas, two forms of joint ownership have the right of survivorship: Joint tenancy. Property owned in joint tenancy automatically passes to the surviving owners when one owner dies. (The survivor must, however, live at least five days longer than the deceased co-owner. Tex. Estates Code sec. 121.152.) No probate is necessary. Joint tenancy often works well when couples (married or not) acquire real estate, vehicles, bank accounts or other valuable property together. In

Texas, each owner, called a joint tenant, must own an equal share. To establish joint tenancy, owners must sign a joint tenancy agreement. Survivorship community property. Married couples can sign an agreement to own property together as “survivorship community property.” Owning property this way avoid probate when one spouse dies and the other becomes sole owner. (Tex. Estates Code sec. 112.051 and following.) 3. Payable-on-death designations for bank accounts In Texas, you can add a “payable-on-death” (POD) designation to bank accounts such as savings accounts or certificates of deposit. You still control all the money in the account -- your POD beneficiary has no rights to the money, and you can spend it all if you want. At your death, the beneficiary can claim the money directly from the bank, without probate court proceedings. Transfer-on-death registration for securities- Texas does not let

you register stocks and bonds in transfer-on-death (TOD) form. 4. Transfer-on-death deeds for real estate Texas allows you to leave real estate with transfer-on-death deeds. These deeds are sometimes called beneficiary deeds. You sign and record the deed now, but it doesn’t take effect until your death. You can revoke the deed or sell the property at any time; the beneficiary you name on the deed has no rights until your death. As the laws change, and as your family situation changes, (marriage, divorce, birth of a child, death of a named agent), it is crucial that you have an estate planning attorney review your current documents to make sure your goals for your hardearned assets are fulfilled in the event the unthinkable happens. In Waiting for Godot, two wanderers, Vladimir and Estragon wait by a lonely tree, to meet up with Mr. Godot, who they hope will change their lives for the better. While they wait, another couple of eccentric travelers arrive. The results are both funny and dangerous.

Outrage By Gary Gillen Outrage is the only word to describe the feelings of so many Americans who watched in disbelief as the Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, James Comey, point by devastating point refuted virtually every statement Hillary Clinton has uttered over the past year about her reason for using a server in her home instead of the State Department’s own secure server while she was Secretary of State. Her statements on the nature of and types of information she allowed to flow through her personal unprotected server, her work related e-mails that were, in spite of her protestations, not turned over to the State Department and the people she allowed to see those sensitive documents were proven false. After his breathtaking recitation of the lies, misstatements,

fabrications, prevarications and misleading comments by Clinton, he stunned the world by stating that, “no reasonable prosecutor would bring such a case.” Comey said that the investigation found no “intent” a prosecutorial requirement not found

in the statutes or used in previous prosecutions of government officials who abused sensitive documents. Generally, after an investigation, the case would be referred to a Grand Jury and they would decide if a prosecution was warranted. No Grand Jury saw this case though.

We are expected to believe that the tarmac meeting between Comey’s immediate boss, Attorney General Loretta Lynch and Hillary Clinton’s husband, former President Bill Clinton, had no bearing in Comey’s unprecedented announcement that no prosecution should be sought. Of course, we are also expected to believe that the fact that President Obama, Comey’s bosses boss, was hosting Hillary Clinton on Air Force One on a campaign tour that very day also played no role in his decision. What an awkward flight that would have been if Comey had decided to refer the investigation to a Grand Jury. Many, like me, believe Clinton set up this system to deny the right of the American People to see the work product of the Secretary of State though the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) which was written to prevent acts just like this. ment, from your City to the Presidency know that their communications are subject to the Freedom of Information Act and that it is illegal to destroy documents that are covered by the Act. By hiding her e-mails at home she effectively thwarted the Act. Then by deciding which e-mails to turn over when she got caught, she again violated the law. As to “intent”, why go to all the trouble of setting up her own system, then refusing to turn over the hard drives containing her e-mails if you had no “intent” to violate the law. Her repeated but debunked statements that it was for convenience begs the question: Wouldn’t it be more convenient to use the State Department run system already in place? She would not have had to hire staff to operate her home-based system. The State Department was doing that already. Comey also exposed the lie that “All work related e-mails were turned over.” They weren’t. He exposed the lie that there were no top secret e-mails on her server. There were. If Clinton can’t or won’t follow the same laws that everyone else in government must, can’t or won’t follow the rules to protect our secrets and can’t or won’t tell the American people the truth, how can we trust her to be President? We can’t.

A Walk in the Rain By K Lynn Lewis So, I step out of the Five Points Marta train station in downtown Atlanta, Georgia. I just flew in from Houston, Texas, and am not overly familiar with that area of town. Also, it is early evening, getting dark, and raining. I have no umbrella, jacket or other water deflecting implement to keep me, my suitcase, and my laptop dry while I walk several blocks to hang out and meet up with my oldest son at Georgia State University after his late evening class. After briefly considering my predicament, I decide to walk anyway, even if I get wet, so I begin. However, within a few steps into the rain, a man with limp and a huge umbrella walks by, says “Hello!” then stops, backs up, and asks, “Do you mind if we walk together?”

I don’t mind, and my new companion and I enjoy a leisurely stroll in the rain for several blocks through downtown Atlanta. Turns out, his name is George, and he moved to Atlanta eight years earlier after he lost his parents in Hurricane Katrina. He limps because his feet were injured by debris where they found him floating unconscious after two days in the floodwaters in

New Orleans. He works various day jobs, has a positive outlook on life, and hopes to start college soon. During our brief stroll, we were approached several times by

people asking me for money, favors, or aggressively hawking their wares. Each time, George spoke nicely, but firmly, and warded them away. I was pleasantly surprised, and grateful. I also realized that George was protecting me – casually, but intentionally and continuously. I asked George why he decided to take a walk in the rain. “The Lord prompted me,” he explained. “I’m not sure why, but I felt compelled to go out and see if someone needed a blessing.” I did not know it, but I did, and we were both mutually blessed. I thanked George as we parted. “Thank Jesus, my friend,” he replied, waving me on my way. “You just never know when a man named George will walk by with an umbrella.” Excerpted from “Meat and Potatoes for the Soul 2”, a banquet of maybles by Dr. K. Up Close and Personal By Stephanie Leggett I recently went to the west coast for a vacation. I visited family who are living in Carmel by the Sea. It was magnificent. The beauty was simply stunning. The sand was soft and white under my feet. The breeze was cool even with the sun shining warm on our shoulders. I’ve never seen water that color before. It was deep blue in some places and bright blue in others. My favorite color was at sunset when the sun would shine thru the crystal clear waves lighting each wave a pale blue just a second before it crashed. Each wave was perfect and unique. I could have sat there for hours mesmerized by the beauty. But we had exploring to do. We walked toward the famed Pebble Beach golf course and played on the beach below it. We climbed on rocks, found caves, discovered springs, played with

dogs, visited with their owners and chased sea gulls. To be surrounded by so much beauty, enveloped by it really, was almost surreal. I’ll treasure every moment for the rest of my life.

A few days ago I was talking with a friend about it. He said he had also driven Highway 1 on the west coast and appreciated its stunning views. I shared that I had done that on past vacations but that this trip was different for me. It was interactive. I told my friend that I’m so glad I got down by the water and climbed around on those rocks. I said that’s where you will find the tide pools filled with crabs, purple sea urchins and turquoise anemones. (We saw big crabs the size of my hand, small crabs the size of my thumbnail and hermit crabs scampering about with their houses on their backs.) You gotta get up close and personal to get the full effect, I told him. Yesterday as I reflected on it all I saw the parallel. Just like the ocean, we can embrace God from a distance or get up close and personal. We can stand on a magnificent rock cliff high above the ocean and view it from a distance with awe and wonder or we can go down to the shore and discover the tide pools. Both are appropriate of course, but now I recommend the more interactive experience. Just like finding a beautiful tide pool hidden in the rocks of the Pacific, what hidden treasure might God have for you? What new experience with God might you find and come to value? Coming to The Great Southwest Prayer Center could be like climbing around on a magnificent ocean beach. Its one way, among many, that you are welcome to come and interact with God. Come sit. Come journal. Come sing. Come cry if you need to. Ask God what he has for you today and then be still and listen. We have both live worship & prayer sets and contemplative music. Choose what works for you. Come for 10 minutes or stay for hours. Bring your laptop, write that report or pray over the requests on the wall maps. To take our ocean metaphor one step further, exploring takes effort. On the rocks I sometimes had to jump from one to another. Doing something new in God can be a leap of faith. As I climbed on the coast sometimes I had to use my hands to pull myself up. In the place of prayer we sometimes have to push thru distraction. Once or twice while exploring the rocky beaches my foot slipped a little. Likewise we can all relate to

Along with the wonderful new technology we all enjoy, some of our lives have become so much busier - and even robot like. Live Theater can bring back compassionate communication.” Mr. Wolfe really appreciates the performing arts organizations and schools in Katy which promote the arts. “World Theater is here to support all of our schools and organizations involved with the performing arts and special events that promote our community. The 2016 - 2017 Broadway Musical Series includes: West Side Story, My Fair Lady, The Music Man, Sister Act and Miss Saigon (School Edition). Executive and Artistic Director, Mr. Burton Wolfe, is very grateful for the World Theater Advisory Board’s support, as well as its show performers, volunteers, patrons, parents and the media. Community support has made it possible for World Theater to offer its first 2016 - 2017 “Broadway Musical Series.”

Book Preview: Joyride: A Beginning in Every End You may recognize Frank Hart from his 10-year reign as worship leader of CrossPoint Community Church. Or maybe you know him as the lead preacher and worship leader of NewChurch in Katy. You might recognize him as the frontman of his hard rock band from Texas, Atomic Opera. However you know him, Frank tells his story in Joyride, a 500-page peek into the secret closets and junk drawers of an almost-famous rock star. This is a candid look at a Midwestern son of a coal miner who couldn’t decide between a pulpit and an electric guitar. Here he is at the start, a 14-year-old boy staring up at the stars and staring curiously at God for the first time. And here he is at the end, a “post-jaded” man in his 50s still staring curiously into the future but with the faith now to share intimate, unshakable truths about God. In between, Frank takes us on a loose ride from his “whitetrash bloodline” to becoming part of the “Houston Sound” created by Wilde Silas Musicworks. We ride high, through the vivid rush of signing with Warner Brothers Records, releasing four albums, and touring with Dio. We teeter with Frank on the brink of becoming the next great rock band, coming so close to

his wildest dreams that we can lick them with our tongue. We also ride low, peering helplessly at him with his unloving father and, later, when his dreams suddenly wither. We’re introduced to the special players in his life, especially his wife, whom he calls his hero. She’s our hero, too, because Frank’s tone lightens when she enters the story, peaking with a hilarious scene on their wedding day. The best moments are when Frank admits the things we’d all rather avoid about ourselves, like his fear of being unliked or that he “lives in the tension between insecurity and arrogance.” He’s afraid we’ll find out he’s a fraud, but then so are most of us, if we’re honest with ourselves, and that’s what makes Joyride a worthwhile read. Through the triumphs and struggles, Frank remains a man who follows his talents and the call of God. “You know the difference between a happy ending and a tragedy?” he asks. “It’s all where you stop telling the story. . . .” Joyride: A Beginning in Every End By Frank Hart VIP Publishing, 522 pages.

Student Profile: Eleni Mote Classification: Senior School: Faith West Academy Eleni Mote is quiet and unassuming, but transforms into a charismatic presence when she steps out onto the stage as one of many characters she has played. She says of herself; “I enjoy playing all kinds of characters. My favorite roles to play are the ones who have attitude or are sometimes considered the ‘bad guys,’ because it gives me an excuse to make a scene and go outside of my own comfort zone.” At 5’9” in 7th grade, the junior high coaches recruited her for basketball and volleyball. She did play volleyball for three years, but found her passion in the action on the stage rather than the action on the volleyball court after seeing the musical, White Christmas at the Hobby Center for the Performing Arts. “I immediately fell in love with the magnitude of the show, the musical numbers and the pure talent that each of the actors had on the stage to act, sing and dance at the same time flawlessly. That was

when I knew I wanted to be part of something that spectacular and even make it to Broadway one day,” Eleni proclaimed. Eleni has performed in numerous local and community

theatre productions as well. Her favorite show in which she performed was the musical Bye Bye Birdie (casted as Kim MacAfee) presented by the Katy Visual and Performing Arts Center (KVPAC). “Thanks to my director who shared her passion for the show and my fellow dedicated cast members made the show more fun to present,” she said. Last year Eleni was Marilla Cuthbert in the Faith West Academy’s production of Anne of Green Gables as and Winifred Banks in Showtime Theatre’s production of Mary Poppins, The Musical. Other productions Eleni has had starring roles are; Jam Jar Sonnets, Vintage Hitchcock: A Live Radio Play, You’re a Good Man-Charlie Brown, Unsinkable, It’s a Wonderful Life, and Under the Bridge. She continues to study and take private lessons to grow in her craft knowing that auditioning to be in a musical theatre major in college is a highly competitive endeavor. She takes theatre and choir as electives, auditions for every show and musical concert while taking Pre-AP and AP courses as she maintains an “A” average. Eleni’s strong leadership skills resulted in advocating and helping to form the first chapter of the International Thespian Society at Faith West Academy where she became its first president. She is a member of the National Honor Society, chapel band,

and Mu Alpha Theta. At Kingsland Baptist Church she serves in the teen worship team, One Voice, and she serves as a counselor for Vacation Bible School and Camp West Day Camp. This past summer she served in a mission trip to Nicaragua. She hopes to major in musical theatre performance at Baylor University.

Bring Your Old Home Up to

For affordable, beautiful and up-to-date new cabinets, call The Re-Modelista today!

Today’s Standards by Marie Page indy Reynolds’ Meadows Place home was built in 1969. “I lived there for 18 years, and then rented it out for several more. When I decided to move back in, I knew I needed to redo most of it. The kitchens and bathrooms were typical of that era, very small. Plus, nearly nothing in the home had been updated since 1969!” Cindy called the City of Meadows Place for contractor recommendations. The names they provided included Teri Gilberg, better known as the “The Re-Modelista.” “The City had used Teri before, and that gave me confidence that she was on their short list. I called her, she came over, and she was ready to jump into my project in just a few short weeks.” To bring the house up-to-date, Cindy changed out the flooring, repainted, redid the fireplace, remodeled the bathrooms, and the biggest project: remodeling the kitchen. “It was a small galley kitchen. Very unusable. I wanted to take out a wall to expand it and open it up, and add a peninsula with a bar. I spent years glued to remodeling shows and I had lots of ideas. I told Teri what I wanted and she made my dreams a reality. She really has an eye for color and putting things together. She even went with me to Floor & Decor to help pick things out. We went with a grayish palette for the floor and walls. The cabinets have a red tint with black trim and the countertops are black granite...and it all blends together perfectly thanks to Teri!”

Throughout the process of remodeling her entire home, Cindy never moved out. “Teri was great about working around my schedule, and making sure I knew what was going on each day. I absolutely love everything her and her crew have done in my home. Teri just has the eye to bring these older houses up to today’s standards. In fact, I’ve already recommended her to a friend looked to buy an older home!”

According to Hunt with Heart’s executive director, Chance Sanford, the organization helps sick young people build self-esteem and feel empowered, sometimes for the first time, since team sports are not an option. Hunt with Heart activates help young people to experience the comradery of being part of activities that focus on their abilities, rather than their ‘dis-abilities.’. Since 2012, Hunt with Heart has raised more than a half a million dollars in contributions from donors, event registrations and in-kind donations. Through this generous support, Hunt with Heart has provided a chance for more than 45 young people to experience the camaraderie of being part of guided, supervised, and shared outdoor activities. Hunt with Heart offers hunting experiences throughout Texas and even into Canada for members and their families. Providing a respite from their daily medical regimen, youngsters are taught firearm safety and marksmanship and then demonstrate their new skills on the target range. The hunts that follow create bonds between all participants that will never be broken. In recent years, the organization has also expanded its offerings to include fishing, wing shooting, camping and other out-

door experiences, as well. From the preparation of the tackle, to the boat trips and stories of catches (and the ones that got away), the experience is a first for many youngsters that gives them an experience they talk about long after the trip is over. Dr. Steve Harris – Treating the Whole Patient By Dr. Rebecca Deurlein Chiropractor Steve Harris has been in practice for 40 years, but it didn’t take him nearly that long to discover what would become the key to his success. While his patients come to him seeking relief from physical ailments, he finds himself treating much more than the body. As he puts it, he tries to be a “true doctor,” because he seeks to understand the underlying causes of pain or discomfort and work toward total healing with his patients. Much of Dr. Harris’ success with his patients stems from a genuine passion for helping others, coupled with a Christian approach to healing. Dr. Harris chose this career after witnessing a chiropractor who helped his father when no other doctor could. After his father’s transformation, he sent the entire family – including Harris – and more than 100

friends and acquaintances to the chiropractor who had helped him. Harris was able to experience firsthand the benefits of the treatment and knew at age 14 that he wanted to help people in the same way. He started his career at age 23 and over the years has seen how powerful the profession is in helping with a variety of problems of the spine and joints including discs, sports injuries, neck and back injuries from auto accidents, and chronic headaches. “I currently treat a 2-year-old who had been in an auto accident,” Harris said. “I use a gentle adjusting instrument that sends impulses up and down the spine and stimulates the nerves to help with alignment and pain.” The 2-year-old lies peacefully on the table and enjoys the treatment, and Dr. Harris is thrilled that he is able to get her neck and back into proper alignment. “Chiropractic is extremely safe, so much so that insurers require much lower malpractice insurance premiums of us than they do doctors in other fields. It’s because they know how safe our procedures are.” Throughout his career, Dr. Harris’s passion for chiropractic has grown as technology has advanced and instruments such as this one have become available. While he still performs physical spine manipulations on patients who need or request it, much of what he does incorporates the use of technological breakthroughs in healthcare. One such breakthrough is the

spinal disc decompression machine used to treat the growing number of people who suffer from spinal disc degeneration. Dr. Harris estimates that 90% of his patients have some level of disc degeneration, which leads to pain, numbness, and further wear on the body. “Unbelievably, this is one of the few areas that just can’t be helped by exercise,” Dr. Harris explained. “I’ve treated athletes in their absolute prime who suffered from this ongoing, progressive problem despite their level of fitness. With this treatment, however, we are able to stop the progression, back it up some, re-nourish and re-moisturize the discs, and give up to 17% of the disc space back to the patient.” Dr. Harris also uses a state-of-the-art laser machine that penetrates discs, speeds healing, reduces inflammation, and heals damage. Laser is used in Dr. Harris’ office to treat pain, with the added benefit of healing spinal tissue damage and upgrading scar tissue. “I was able to completely erase a patient’s knee pain using laser, but the surprise benefit is that the laser also severely reduced a protruding, purple scar on that knee. My patient was happy she was finally out of pain, but she was equally happy to lose that outward reminder of her pain!” And this is where Dr. Harris reflects on his practice, particularly as a Christian. He notes that while people come to him with a variety of physical ailments, many are manifestations of something deeper in their lives, including stress, depression, problems at home or at work. When Dr. Harris detects that there might be something emotional behind the pain, he asks permission to

share Scripture with his patients. Never has he been refused. His patients come from all religious backgrounds, but, as he said, “Everyone is looking for relief.” To illustrate this, Harris shared a story about a patient named Bill, who came in with back pain. He weighed 400 lbs., had a stomach ulcer, high blood pressure, and congested lungs. He smoked a carton of cigarettes every two days, drank a bottle of whiskey and 15 cups of coffee a day, and vomited 30 minutes after every meal. Dr. Harris said to him, “Bill, you have a problem with every major system in your body, and any one of those problems can cripple or kill you. If you want help, I will give it to you, but you have to listen and do everything I say.” At 53 years old, with a prognosis of two years to live, Bill agreed. His dream was to build the largest house in Texas and he wanted to live long enough to see that dream realized. So Dr. Harris instructed him to stop drinking that day, stop smoking the next week, reduce coffee to 2 cups the next, diet, follow a nutritional program, exercise, and come in regularly for treatments. Bill dropped almost half his weight, his overall health improved, and he built his 34,000 square foot dream house on Galveston bay in Seabrook. When Dr. Harris attended the Open House, he gifted Bill with a Bible and a letter guiding him through the Scriptures. Five weeks later, Bill was murdered. His foreman found him and the Bible, which he then passed on to Bill’s son, Ron Carlson. At the time, Ron was contemplating suicide. His sister Deborah Thornton had been murdered by the notorious Karla Faye Tucker, leaving him with no family. Desperate for answers, he turned to the Bible and 2 years later on Bill’s birthday, Ron called

Dr. Harris to thank him for his dad’s Bible and to let him know he had become a Christian. He went on to meet the murderer of his sister and to extend forgiveness and compassion. Later, his extraordinary willingness to forgive made him a media sensation, and he was invited to appear on Primetime, Larry King, and Good Morning America. “He professed his faith stronger and more effectively than I have seen or heard since,” Harris said proudly. “That one Bible led to a transformation that was shared with countless people.”

Dr. Harris shares this story to illustrate one of his favorite Bible verses from Isaiah 55:11: So is my word that goes out from my mouth: It will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it. Dr. Harris believes that one kind act – one Scripture, one piece of advice, one phone call, one treatment – can change not just one life, but thousands. Given that he’s treated over 11,000 patients in his career, it’s obvious that his influence spreads far beyond his patients. Recipe: Baby Back Ribs You don’t have to go out for baby backs anymore. Make them on your own grill.

The Rub • 2 racks of baby back ribs (2 - 21/2 pounds ea.) • 2 tablespoons olive oil • 1 tablespoon chili powder • 2 teaspoons brown sugar • 1-1/2 teaspoons salt • 1 teaspoon garlic powder • 1 teaspoon sweet paprika • 1/2 teaspoon ground cumin • 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme Combine the olive oil with the dry ingredients to make a smooth paste. Rub over the ribs, and wrap tightly in plastic. Refrigerate 2 hours or up to overnight. Allow ribs to stand at room temperature about 30 minutes before you put them on the grill. Cook the ribs in a covered charcoal or gas grill using the indirect heat method at 300°F (if your grill has a thermometer). Grill 1-1/2 to 2 hours, turning once, until very tender (meat will shrink back from the ends of the bones). Remove ribs from the grill, set on a baking sheet and cover tightly with foil. Place in a warm oven (200°F) for 30 minutes before serving. Makes 4 servings. Prep time: 20 min.; Cooking time: 2 hrs.; Total time: 2 hrs. 20 min.

The Sauce • 1 tablespoon butter • 1 tablespoon garlic, minced or pressed • 1 tablespoon chipotle chilies w/ adobo sauce, chopped (optional) • 2 tablespoons brown sugar • 2 tablespoons red wine vinegar • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce • 1/4 cup fresh orange juice • 1 cup catsup • 1 tablespoon molasses Melt the butter in a heavy saucepan over medium heat. Add the garlic and sauté until garlic begins to soften, about 1 to 2 minutes. Add the remaining ingredients. Reduce heat and simmer, stirring occasionally, 20 to 30 minutes until sauce has thickened. Ribs may be served with the sauce on the side. If you want to glaze the ribs with the sauce, begin basting ribs with the sauce after 1 hour, turning every 15 minutes to coat both sides, until ribs are done. Remove finished ribs to a baking sheet, cover tightly with foil and place in warm oven for 30 minutes before serving.
