Back to school is always exciting and most families have developed yearly rituals to prepare. I know my household is inundated with school lists and wish lists and dozens of last minute items. School supplies and bargain hunting are a must, along with finding just the right clothing, shoes, backpacks and lunch boxes. Our children are a year older, so chances are their tastes have changed in more ways than one. Getting students into the classroom feeling confident and firm in their faith is the goal. For this issue we’ve included some back-to-school scriptures, an article on back-toschool bargains, plus interesting back-to-school stories on Katy High Theatre, the International Bilingual Hymns Project, and 14-year-old Boyd Bumbera (the youngest of the Bumbera NASCAR dynasty). We also share a word from Cliff Young of Caedmon’s Call and Second Baptist -- his work with the Dalits (Untouchables) of India and his efforts to build schools for poor children is such a blessing. We also visit two friendly competitors, Holly Chervnsik and Tracey Cleckler, who definitely walk the walk. Oh, and a chat with a Christian business gives us a delightful look into the corporate Christian culture. So I extend a happy 2012-2012 to students, families, readers and our community. Enjoy this issue and remember -- we want to profile your Christian student in upcoming issues. Contact me at joseph@houstonchristianmagazine.com for details.

About In The Word Ministries In the Word Ministries began in 1986 with ministry at Harris County Jail, Salvation Army’s Harbor Light Men’s Development Center and the Star of Hope Men’s Facility. Since that time, God has provided In The Word Ministries with a vision and compassion for reaching out to those behind bars and trapped in their addictions. Over the years we have seen tens of thousands of people make the decision to follow Christ as Lord and Savior. We have been blessed to keep in close contact with many of these men and women and be a part of them becoming successful and being reestablished in society.

Back to School in Katy By Melanie Saxton An exciting new school year awaits, which means parents and students are in back-toschool shopping mode. But with an economy that’s seen better days, the question for budgetconscious families is, “Where are the bargains?” Tax Free Shopping Texas Comptroller`Susan Combs has once again announced tax-free shopping days, scheduled this year on August 17- 19. The Comptroller’s website states, “Retailers will not be required to collect state and local sales or use tax on most footwear and clothing that are sold for less than $100 during the holiday. The exemption applies to each eligible item that sells for less than $100, regardless of how many items are sold on the same invoice to a customer.” Backpacks, school supplies and clothing are tax-free, with some exclusions. For instance, barrettes, baseball cleats, hand bags and such will be taxed.

neously, so it makes sense to replace clothing frequently at a huge savings. Crayon’s Resale Shop, The Children’s Carousel, and Tot 2 Tot, which is having their 2012 fall sale at the Church of the Holy Apostles September 7-8th, are located nearby. For older students, Plato’s Closet, Blackbird, and The Walk In Closet help take the stigma out of resale. In fact, some high schoolers actually love shopping at Goodwill and Katy Christian Ministries, because some of the inventory can be unique, vintage and just “different” enough to make a statement. Cautions Even with gently used clothing, each item should be carefully gone over for quality and wear. Watch for zippers, buttons, stains, solid

Shoppers can visit http://www.window.state.tx.us/ taxinfo/taxpubs/tx98_490/tx98_490.html for a full list of exempt and non-exempt purchases. The malls will be crowded, as back-to-school sales often coincide with tax free days. But for families willing to navigate busy parking lots and loads of bargain hunters, the trip may be worth it. All surrounding malls, including Katy Mills, First Colony and Memorial City, will be participating. Resale Several consignment and resale shops await shoppers, offering discounted clothing and accessories for those who don’t mind gently worn clothing. Often kiddos outgrow clothing almost instanta-

seams and hemlines -- most items are nonreturnable and nonrefundable, so vigilance is necessary. But clothing can be purchased for a fraction of the cost, and a side benefit is that last year’s clothing can be consigned or sold, meaning you may be able to receive cash on the spot or accumulate store credit. Getting Organized Knowing the exact school supplies your campus requires is key to locating the right mapping pencils, number of tissue boxes and required thickness of binders. Each elementary, junior high and high school campus has school supply lists available, and some retailers and grocery stores also carry them. Following the lists closely can make that first day of school much less stress-free for students, who always seem to worry about bringing the correct items to class. Couponing and Fliers We’ve seen the extreme couponing shows, and more consumers are taking advantage of the savings for back-to-school lunch items including canned fruits, yogurt, snack bars and a host of other lunch box-friendly items. Even juice boxes go on sale. They key is to watch for coupons in newspapers and fliers, seek opportunities to double them, and locate retailers who honor them. It takes some leg work, but dedicated couponers -- extreme or not -- love the savings. Your neighborhood stores have coupling details and specials, so don’t be shy. Ask if they double or triple coupons and also ask about in-store specials every time you visit. Often prices drop at the register if you present a store discount card.

Good Old Walmart Parents will be hard pressed to beat the prices at Walmart, with their famous low costs on everything from glue to pencils to binders. The downside includes crowds and long lines, but many feel that’s a small price to pay for big money savings. August is the big month for sales, so frequent Walmart shoppers in all Katy locations will find the discounts once they are promoted. Sending Them Off with a Prayer As always, blessing our children through prayer and encouragement sets the tone for a successful school year. Most parents remember what it was like to be student and can relate to the angst and worry some children feel as they negotiate friendships and bond with new teachers. Yet, these current times seem to be more complex and students are faced with greater moral and social challenges than ever before. Church families, strongly entrenched values and supportive parenting goes a long way to ensure each child is rooted and grounded in the Word. We certainly pray for our students in private, charter and public schools and will continue to include them in our upcoming Christian Student Profiles. Tax Planning for Education – for Elementary through College By Joel Mathews, CPA J. M. Mathews PLLC We plan for retirement, we plan to go on vacations, and most of us will say that we plan for our children’s education, but are we really? As we approach another school year, let’s take a look at what we can do now for today’s costs, but also what we can do to help minimize our costs for years ahead. For today’s costs, in particular, I want to discuss tax planning for the 2012 expenses you might be able to take as tax deductions and tax credits on your 2012 income tax return. And then for those costs that will come after 2012, I want to discuss some of the tax advantaged ways you can plan for college. While many of the current tax deductions and tax credits focus on college expenses (or post-secondary education), there is a way to help pay for qualified education expenses for elementary and secondary schools (i.e. kindergarten to 12th grade) for public, private or religious schools. For your children or grandchildren, you can set up a Coverdell Education Savings Account (CESA). In 2012 you can contribute up to $2,000 to a Coverdell Education Savings Account (CESA). For 2013 the contribution is scheduled to drop back to $500, unless Congress extends the $2,000 limit another year, as they did last year. This is a great planning opportunity if you have children under the age of 7 and you know you want them to attend a private elementary school. Or, if you have children under the age

of 10 and you know you want them to attend a private high school. There are some restrictions, but the main items are the beneficiaries of the account have to be under age 18 at the initial contribution, but if this is for a special needs child, there are no age limitations. There are also income limitations. You won’t be able to contribute if you earn more than $190,000 and you file your income tax return as Married Filing Jointly or if you earn more than $110,000 and you file as Single or Head of Household on your tax return. If the funds are not used up, the account can be rolled over to another beneficiary who is a family member, including family members of in-laws. Once the beneficiary reaches the age of 30, the account has to be either rolled over to another beneficiary or distributed out. If you want to save for college expenses for your children, no matter what their age is today, my recommendation is to just start. One of the best options out there is a 529 Plan. Many financial planners and institutions can get you information on these types of accounts and most states have a 529 Plans where you can invest directly. My tax planning point for you here is that the contributions in the 529 plans grow tax deferred. And, as long as you use these funds for qualified higher education expenses, any withdraws from the account will be tax free. There are no income limitations with a 529 Plan like the CESA discussed above. Contributors maintain control of the funds until the distributions are made to the beneficiary and the contributor can change the beneficiary. Contributions are considered gifts therefore the annual gift exclusion applies, meaning you can contribute up to $13,000 before a gift tax return would be required. However, there is not a limitation on what can be contributed, so

even contributions of $100,000 can be made, pending restrictions placed on the account by 529 Plan administrator. For any contribution greater than $13,000 a year, I recommend you work with your accountant and estate attorney on specific details. And finally, Tax Credits. If you have college age or very soon to be college age children, then you need to consider the available tax credits you can take on your income tax returns. The two main credits for today’s college expenses are the American Opportunity Tax Credit (AOTC) and the Lifetime Learning Credit (LLC). The AOTC provides for a refundable tax credit. Keep in mind I said refundable, meaning you can get money back. The AOTC is capped at $2,500 per student. The tax credit will provide a 100% credit for the first $2,000 of qualified higher education expenses, and then 25% of the next $2,000 of qualified higher education expenses. So for the first $4,000 of qualified expenses, you can get a refundable credit of $2,500. The AOTC is available for the first four years of a student’s post-secondary education. Keep in mind, there are income limitations to this credit as well. You won’t be able to take the full credit if you earn more than $160,000 and you file your income tax return as Married Filing Jointly or if you earn more than $80,000 and you file as Single or Head of Household on your tax return. After the first four years, the next best credit for qualified education expenses is the Lifetime Learning Credit (LLC). This credit is available for everyone, not just students, and there are far fewer restrictions. For one, the student does not have to be enrolled in a degreed program, or be considered a half-time student. The credit can be used for undergraduate, graduate or even courses for professional development. The main limitations on this credit are that the

expenses should be for qualified tuition and fees, and the credit calculation is based on 20% of the first $10,000 of expenses. You won’t be able to tax this credit if you earn more than $102,000 and you file your income tax return as Married Filing Jointly or if you earn more than $51,000 and you file as Single or Head of Household on your tax return. A final planning point here is that even if your income keeps you from qualifying for the AOTC or LLC tax credits, consider having the student take these credits. While there are other income tax return considerations, and you should always consult with your accountant, always consider the options. Don’t let you concerns about how much you earn (or don’t earn) keep you from planning for education expenses. The tax law provides many ways to save and even get money back. Tax planning should be part of any budget plan, but you have to start. Proverbs 24:3-4 provides that, “by wisdom is a house built, by understanding is it made firm; and by knowledge are its rooms filled with every precious and pleasing possession.” Joel Mathews, CPA is the managing partner of J. M. Mathews PLLC, a local CPA firm in the Katy area. As with any tax advice, other facts and circumstances should be considered before taking a particular position on an income tax return, so always seek the advice of an accountant. You may contact him directly at joel. mathews@jmmcpa.com or at 713-806-6347.

Boyd Bumbera: A Rising Star in the Bumbera Dynasty By Melanie Saxton Growing up Bumbera has shaped the life of 8th grader Boyd. After all, few young men have cut their baby teeth on an air chuck or followed in the footsteps of renowned NASCAR sisters. But through the years Boyd has been immersed in the racing culture and now, at the age of 14, is officially old enough to take the wheel. It’s his break out season. Boyd Bumbera is the younger brother of Kristin and Kendall, both famous for their exploits on the race track and as hosts of a morning show on Fox News. And he’s part of a dynasty -- one that started with parents Kenny and Cheri Bumbera, both NASCAR drivers. The entire family has character, deep faith and standards. Boyd, who attends Faith West, has inherited the same qualities. He’s also inherited the family talent and is the newest rising star in NASCAR. There isn’t one definite word to describe Boyd, but “personality” comes to mind. He’s fun, friendly, confident . . . and the camera loves him. This is fortunate, particularly because the family will soon be featured in their own reality show after being approached by five different production companies. Along with their sports agent, Holly Chervnsik of Stinger Sports, the Bumberas identified one producer who understood the family dynamics and values, and so they signed 4 color gradients

on. Although the focus is on his sisters, Boyd will undoubtedly get his fair share of the limelight. “Both my sisters have given me someone to look up to, so I know what to do now that my time has come,” says Boyd, who doesn’t like scripts. He’ll add a component to the show that few others could: a behind-the-scenes look at his new, budding career complete with powerful engines and the thrill of the racetrack as seen through the eyes of an up-and-comer. He’s the proud uncle to Bentley Jester, sister Kristin’s baby, who is also teething on air chucks. “I look forward to teaching him everything I know -- he’s the youngest member of our racing family and will also appear on the show,” says Boyd. Bentley, like Boyd, is growing up around wheels, motors and speed. “When I was 7 my dad bought me a Bandolera motorcycle with a cage around it. His friend sponsored me, and even though we weren’t familiar with the engine, we learned by taking it apart.” He remembers shadowing his dad, mimicking his every move. Mom Cheri recounts, “I have pictures of both of them, Kenny’s legs sticking out from underneath a car and Boyd’s little feet appearing right beside him.” Life in his parent’s shop has taught him responsibility, and he’s worked at the front counter, installed vinyl graphics, rebuilt carburetors, developed fabrication skills, air brushed, disassembled auto bodies and riveted -- because after he wrecks a race car, he has to replace the parts. Now he’s ready for the move to a new class -- the Allison Legacy. “It’s a Ford Taurus 4 cylinder, 108 HP 5 speed with

a quick change rear end, and 3/4 size,” says Boyd, excited about this base white #17 with red and black graphics, perfect for the oval course. But he’ll have to keep up with it -- “We get in trouble if we don’t clean our cars after a race, scraping the rubber residue off the undercarriage. My dad isn’t one to go out and buy what we can fix ourselves, so we were taught to take care of our race cars.” He races at Texas World Speedway at College Station, Thunderhill in Kyle, as well as the MSR road course in Alvin and the NASCAR track on the East Coast. He’s done well in every class. It’s expensive, and sponsorships are important. But betting on a Bumbera is always a smart move, and Boyd’s skill set is superior, perhaps because of the racing DNA, but also because he’s committed. “I’m working out two to three times a week to build strength and endurance,” says Boyd, who has just experienced a major growth spurt. He’s honing his neck, shoulder and leg muscles to prepare for next year. At 15 he’ll move to yet another class and tackle a full-sized race car. He’s having the time of his life and embracing the new challenges. As acclaim awaits him, we wish Boyd every success and God’s speed behind the wheel. The Illusion of Control By Dr. K. Lynn Lewis The Bible Seminary It happens regularly. Someone in the family misplaces the television remote, and we all embark on a frantic search, digging through pillows, clothes, papers, across counters, and under furniture until we find the powerful prize—the controller. I suppose we could get up and walk across the room and manually turn on the TV, physically touching the buttons with our finger like we used to do. It was those dials back in the old days that enabled us to change the channel and volume and manage reception and display. But, in truth, many of today’s features require the remote to access and control them, and without the universal remote, we are powerless to manage our personal entertainment dynasty. But, even then, what does the reigning ruler who holds the coveted clicker actually control? We imagine ourselves all powerful as we transport through vast dimensions of action, adventure, comedy, drama, education, and news. We visit ages past, present, and future with the touch of button, gain great knowledge, meet fascinating people, and form emotional bonds with characters, families, teams and towns real and imagined.

Inevitably, a dead battery in the remote, a glitch in the cable system, or a power outage can bring everything to a standstill. Then we find ourselves sitting on a couch with a useless box of plastic in one hand and a blank plate of glass staring at us from across a quiet room located in building situated on a planet rotating at 870 miles per

hour on its axis at our latitude, orbiting our sun at 67,000 miles per hour in a galaxy spinning at hundreds of thousands of miles per hour through an expanding universe of multiple galaxies and unfathomable dimensions. With each breath and pang of hunger or thirst we realize that our mere earthly existence is dependent upon an individualized body that requires oxygen, water, and food to operate a vast complex of physical operations, none of which we created or requested or voted into our lives. With each bolt of lightning, each dawn and dusk, each vast array of clouds and light, each face and body type and personality that shadows our existence, each family reference to our ancestors and contact with our progeny, we realize that we control nothing, except perhaps the illusion that we are in control of many things. In truth, we are hanging in space with no safety net, no back-up plan, and no ultimate control of almost anything, sustained only by a gracious, providential God who truly is the Controller. If these are troublesome thoughts, fear not, for as the psalmist has written, “The Lord is the stronghold of my life - of whom shall I be afraid?” (Psalm 27:1)

As the apostle Paul wrote about Jesus, “For Him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things were created by Him and for Him. He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together.” (Colossians 1:16-17) And as Jesus said, “Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God; trust also in me . . . I am the way and the truth and the life.” ( John 14:1,6) Therefore, perhaps we should dispense with the illusion that we are ultimately in control of anything, that by worrying we can accomplish good, or that by passion or insinuation or knowledge or gaining leadership or wielding we can master our own universe. Rather, we should pray, trust the Lord, serve diligently and lovingly, and when we do kick back and press “Power” on our remote, know that God is the one true source of power and the ultimate controller of all. Popcorn, anyone? Dr. K. Lynn Lewis serves as Executive Vice-President/Provost of The Bible Seminary in Katy, Texas

As Isaiah has written, “Do you not know? Have you not heard? The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He will not grow tired or weary, and His understanding no one can fathom.” (Isaiah 40:28)

Back to School Scriptures By Melanie Saxton Back to school shopping isn’t the only thing on the minds of students. Across elementary, junior high, high school and university campuses, girls and boys (or young women and men) enter private, charter or public schools with a peculiar set of challenges. Because of their age, the need to fit in is compelling. Yet compromising who they are and what they believe isn’t a desired option. As always, the Bible is a great source of wisdom, strength and counsel. We are including in this issue some favorite scriptures for students who will surely need them this school year. Parents, we encourage you to share these scriptures throughout 2012-2013 as your students navigate the friendships, social lures and school work that lay before them. We start with, “Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.” 1 Peter 5:7. Finding Strength Christians on school campuses are bound by classroom rules, but doing the right thing goes further than just signing a student handbook. Christians answer to a higher calling, with God’s word and deep belief in our savior to guide behavior: “But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and forever! Amen.” 2 Peter 3:18. And when students feel overwhelmed balancing right and wrong, they can cling to these

holy words: “I can do all things through Him who strengthens me.” Philippians 4:13. Professing the Faith The world seems to be even unfriendlier towards Christians lately, stifling speech and expression. Yet, the Word addresses this: “For God did not give us a spirit of timidity, but a spirit of power, of love and of self-discipline.” 2 Timothy 1:7. Many students have found a way to share their faith within the “rules” of society. For instance, participating in the Fellowship of Christian Athletes is one opportunity. Young Life is another. Church youth groups and children’s ministries can prepare young people to venture forth, and a good scripture to memorize is: “I pray that you may be active in sharing your faith, so that you will have a full understanding of every good thing we have in Christ.” Philemon 1:6. Walking the Walk Often others will sense that a student is a Christian through not only words, but deeds. For even the quietest of believers, their faith is a huge part of who they are. Fellow students will recognize, or perhaps simply sense, the Christian nature of your child, who should be applauded and encouraged daily to do the right thing: “And do not forget to do good and to share with others, for with such sacrifices God is pleased.” Hebrews 13:16. Another wonderful scripture: “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous! Do not tremble or be dismayed, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go.” Joshua 1:9.

passes all comprehension, shall guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Finally, brethren, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is of good repute, if there is any excellence and if anything worthy of praise, let your mind dwell on these things.” Philippians 4:6-8. Another helpful verse: “Now flee from youthful lusts, and pursue righteousness, faith, love and peace, with those who call on the Lord from a pure heart.” 2 Timothy 2:22.

Resisting Temptation Social pressures abound, especially online temptations. Questionable postings and pictures of Facebook, Twitter and Tumblir present challenges. How does a young person fit in while still standing apart? The following scripture is a favorite: “Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which sur-

Receiving God’s Abundant Love Every school year will have its ups and downs. No one is perfect, and mistakes will be made. But students can rest assured that our merciful God is forgiving. Rejuvenating their faith and overcoming hurts and hurdles is part of growing up: “Surely goodness and loving kindness will follow me all the days of my life, And I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.” Psalm 23:6. God bless our young people as they venture forth. May they find encouragement and wisdom from those who love them and strength in their daily walk with Jesus.

Christian Business Profile: The Behlmann Law Firm By Melanie Saxton When it comes to estate planning and probate law, it is important to remember that the affects last both during and after this lifetime. Richard Behlmann is a board certified Estate Planning & Probate Law attorney who also addresses Elder Law. He’s been practicing since 1979 and established the Behlmann Law Firm in Katy five years ago. He felt called to be an attorney when his parents’ business needed legal expertise. Starting out as a prosecuting attorney for St. Louis County, Missouri, he segued into tax law. “I saw first hand the importance of estate planning and probate tax law when I experienced two unexpected deaths, a brother-in-law who was 40 and a brother who was 43. I had already helped them set up their estates and saw the benefit it was to their families,” says Behlmann, who feels he practices a positive area of the law. “People feel better and are more at peace when they know their affairs are in order and that their final wishes will be honored. No one wants to leave a burden to those left behind.” In fact, tax limitations have gone up, so at times it’s more a matter of protecting beneficiaries from themselves. Being clueless or misinformed does no one any good. Business and special needs planning are also included in Behlmann’s suite of services. Estate planning is crucial. “It can involve emotional issues and other issues, and writing down what you want and who you want in charge removes the drama,” says Behlmann. As a “before the fact” kind of lawyer, he tries to make the process as easy as possible. “Everybody’s situation is different. There are different properties, different family dynamics and different challenges.” He offers a free consultation and does not sell overly complicated plans or services. “We assess what our clients needs are and guide them in the simplest to meet those needs,” says Behlmann. Helping families preserve their wealth dur-

ing and after their lifetime is his mission through wills, living trusts, probate, asset protection, medicaid planning and powers of attorney. As for Elder Law, it often helps the children of the elderly who, on behalf of their parents, have questions about coverage, the right care, entitlements, protections, navigation of the system, preparation and having right documentation in place. Behlmann has been married to his bride, Elaine, for 36 years and has three sons, Joe (a lawyer like his dad), John (an actor in New York) and Kevin (who lives in Austin and teaches orchestra in Georgetown). Two are products of Katy ISD and all were raised in the Catholic faith. Joe is expecting his first child and is keeping the details a surprise, so the Behlmanns are waiting to find out whether they’ll have a granddaughter or grandson to spoil. When Kevin graduated from high school, Elaine joined her husband at the law firm to help where she was needed. They have one dog who is ever present. “Xena (the Warrior Princess) was lonely when her companion, our other dog, passed away. So we brought her with us to work and now have an office dog,” says Behlmann. For ways to plan and protect, call 281-398-0088 or visit the Behlmann Law Firm at www.behlmannlaw.com.

Good Prostate Health: Steps to Safeguard Your Prostate By Steven F. Hotze, M.D Hotze Health & Wellness Center As a physician, I am concerned that men do not focus enough on preventative health. Our busy “on-the-run” culture creates an environment of little exercise and an unhealthy diet. Over the years, this has a negative compounding effect, and it is much more difficult to reverse these years of neglect than it is to have been proactive from the beginning. However, it is never too late to take charge of your health! In this article we will focus on a subject that affects millions of men: the prostate. There is a good reason for prostate health to be a top priority as it is the second leading cause of cancer death for men in America. While there has been an effort in conventional medicine to encourage screening, it is even more important to focus on prevention. Screening is not enough. Apart from prostate cancer detection, you probably have not heard

much, if anything, about the prevention of prostate cancer, so I would like to educate you and give you some tools on how you can arm yourself against this disease.

Protecting the Prostate As a man ages, so does his prostate gland and many men develop an enlarged prostate. An enlarged prostate is the result of hormonal imbalance. Over time, men can experience difficulty with urination due to prostate enlargement such as frequent urination, urinary urgency, incomplete bladder emptying, painful urination as well as cause problems with sexual health. Part of the aging process in men is the conversion of healthy testosterone levels into its more problematic metabolite, dihydrotestosterone (DHT), which is behind an enlarged prostate. Maintaining healthy levels of progesterone and testosterone with bioidentical hormones will boost prostate health. Vitamins that Boost Prostate Health Vitamin D: Vitamin D suppresses tumor growth. Zinc Chelate: Supplementing with zinc has been shown to help shrink an enlarged prostate. It has also been shown to be effective at relieving an inflamed prostate. Vitamin B6 L-Glutamine L-Arginine Selenium: Selenium has been shown to aid in slowing the progression of cancer as noted by Natural News. In addition, it has also been shown to assist in the death of cancerous and pre-cancerous cells. Saw Palmetto: Men should also take saw palmetto (160 mg twice a day). Saw palmetto, which is a Native American herb, is very effective in relieving inflammation and enlargement of the prostate. It also aids in controlling the hormones that cause prostate enlargement and

strengthens the prostate gland. Antioxidants such as vitamins, C, E and beta carotene: These antioxidants have been shown to work to block chemical reactions that create free radicals in the body. Foods that Support Prostate Health • Increase Omega-3 fatty acids such as fish oil or flax seed oil. • Decrease Omega-6. • Decrease your fat intake, especially high-fat animal products. • Zinc and vitamin B6 assist in reducing prolactin levels which decreases dihydrotestosterone which promotes prostate health. Include foods in your diet that are good sources for zinc: whole grains, fish, nuts, legumes, beans and oysters. Additionally, choose foods that contain vitamin B6 such as beans, potatoes, bananas, meat, chicken, peanut butter and certain fish, like salmon and tuna. Allow me to encourage you to set a goal to be proactive and take charge of your own health -- today! Steven F. Hotze, M.D., is the founder and CEO of Hotze Health & Wellness Center (HHWC), Physician’s Preference and Hotze Pharmacy. Caedmon’s Call By Melanie Saxton Cliff Young of Second Baptist heads Caedmon’s Call, a band that weaves a mission into their music. Caedmon’s Call is a Contemporary Christian band headed by lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist Cliff Young, son of well-known pastor Dr. Ed Young. His wife Danielle has been at his side for 15 years and is a vocalist. The band fuses traditional folk with cultural music and alternative rock. “Danielle and I went on our first date the night before the first Caedmon’s Call performance back in 1993,” says Young, who is busy coordinating VBS, as well as high school and junior high beach retreats for the church. He helps record music for VBS in the studio. Original band member Randy Holsapple is a Katyite who now tagteams as an instrumentalist. “I joined the band pretty much from the very beginning,” says Holsapple, who plays the Hammond organ. “We were on the road eight months out of every year, and I left in 1999 because my kids needed a full-time daddy.” Randy now plays on special occasions and last appeared on the Caedmon’s Call album, Raising Up The Dead.

The full-time band includes Derek Webb (vocals, guitars), Garett Buell (percussion), Jeff Miller (bass guitar), Todd Bragg (drums), and Josh Moore (keyboard, accordion, harmonica). In June, 1994, the band released their first album, My Calm // Your Storm and in 1996 signed with Christian label Warner Alliance, then with Essential Records in 1998. In 2004, Caedmon’s Call released “Share the Well”, addressing social justice issues through music, such as hunger and the plight of the Dalits in India. “We had just found out about caste discrimination. The Dalits are a group of people who are treated like animals and not really even considered human. Although the caste system is technically illegal, 3000 years of history and the belief in reincarnation has sealed the fate of the Dalits. Many in India view their status as a just and deserved punishment,” says Young, who felt called to visit the country. The band played on the instruments of the Dalits, considered unclean. For three weeks they traveled to villages and composed music with the outcasts of society. Many Dalits can’t read or write, but much of

their history is in their music. “Many in the U.S. deny this even goes on, but the evidence is there for all to see,” adds Young. Young did much more than compose music to raise awareness. He began building schools in India, and one of Second Baptist’s major ministries supports the Dalits. “These schools teach English and the Bible. We see so much hope now, and English would never otherwise be taught to the children of the Dalits,” says Young. “The Gospel itself was written for the downtrodden and the hopeless. Jesus came for the least of these. Those who have been told their whole lives that God hates them and that they never should have been born now hear the message that they are loved through Christ.” Young sits on the board of the Dalit Freedom Network and is a sponsor. “Dalit children who manage to attend government schools sit on floors while other children sit at desks,” says Young, who travels to India every year to look at the church schools that welcome Dalit children as equals. As for the band, they joined INO Records in 2006 and explain the name Caedmon’s Call as follows: Founding band members Cliff and Danielle, along with songwriter Aaron Tate, all heard the story of Caedmon during the same week. Caedmon was a 7th century Anglo-Saxon cow-herd who feared singing publicly until an angel appeared in a dream and called him to sing. The name has served the band well for almost 20 years.

Local Competitors: Faith and Friendly Collaboration By Melanie Saxton We see so much angst and ugliness in the business world. Some businesses operate with a deeply entrenched belief that the competition is “the enemy,” or that any type of collaboration is threatening. But is this fierce urge to dominate at all costs necessarily good for modern businesses? Is a cutthroat philosophy something that Christians should buy in to? In fact, playing nice has benefits. Two amazing local business women slice through all the hype and drama to run their enterprises in a remarkably civil -- and collaborative -- manner. They each have strengths, and find in each other ways to bridge gaps and meet the needs of their clients. Meet Tracey Cleckler of You Squared Media Advertising Agency and Holly Chervnsik of Subur

reaps reciprocal rewards. “Our communities are now interconnected through the Internet and social media, and with a talent pool that reaches across industries, it makes sense to collaborate,” says Chervnsik. “Instead of feeling threatened or territorial, a really sound business will help others when possible and also gain the help of friendly competitors. Everyone benefits -- especially the client.” For instance, Chervnsik owns several businesses, all stemming from her Master’s degree with a business core and a concentration in graphic design -- marketing, website development, and the Stinger Sports Agency that caters to race car drivers such as Antron Brown, the Bumbera sisters, A. J. Foyt and Alec Udell. She works with television producers, but is also busy around town publicizing clients and helping grow businesses. Cleckler’s agency is similar, working in publicity, media placement, outdoor media, paid search campaigns (pay-per-click), social marketing, website design, print, press releases, web and commercial production. After 18 years of radio, TV and agency experience she opened her office in the Galleria and commutes back home to Katy. Both she and Chervnsik rely on one another for complicated campaigns, and go-to answers for clients. “Identifying reputable companies and seeking mutual opportunities to best service customers is just smart business,” says Cleckler, who interned for Willard Scott back in the day.

also outside, constantly being accessible and open to new opportunities and meeting needs,” says Cleckler. Chervnsik agrees. “It isn’t healthy to buy into the old concepts of ‘enemies’ or try to paint the competition with one negative brush. Not only is that silly, but it isn’t ethical. There’s plenty of business out there, and relationship-building makes hay. Negativity repels.” Both Cleckler and Chervnsik are Katy wives and moms. “I want my girls (an older daughter and a set of twins) to become wonderful mothers and independent women,” says Cleckler. “We say prayers before dinner, go to church and Sunday School, and I enjoy Wednesday night Bible study.” Chervnsik has a pastor in the family -- her motherin-law -- who inspires her to be the best person she can be. Her daughter, Nadia, was featured in a previous Christian student profile in Katy Christian Magazine. Check out www.yousquaredmedia.com, www.suburbanbuzz.com and www.stingersports.com for more information on these remarkable women who refuse to operate in the negative, but instead collaborate in the positive. Truly, faith and friendly competition can coexist in wonderfully rewarding ways.

Perhaps never being privy to a good ol’ boy’s network makes today’s modern business women play to their strengths: relationship-building. “It really boils down to nurturing relationships within networks, but

After School Arts: Luce Conservatory of Fine Arts By Melanie Saxton With school back in session, students will be tackling the usual academics. But extracurriculars are also important and help students develop creativity, self expression, moral character and discipline. With so many after school activities to choose from, it makes sense to find one that encourages the whole child -- body, mind and spirit. One special visual and performing arts company, Luce (“Loochay”) Conservatory of Fine Arts, is impressing Katy families with their highly trained staff and devotion to students of all ages. From people drawn to dance, to people interested in painting, the conservatory is meeting the needs of community. Gladysue Hovis is the Dance Department Head overseeing ballet and creative movement. She holds a Masters degree in both dance and education with over 20 years of teaching experience at Brigham Young University, The Jewish Community Center of Houston, Galveston Ballet and Live Oak Dance Center. “We are a new conservatory in Katy, offering students of all ages and skill levels instruction in ballet, creative movement and the visual arts,” says Hovis. “We also offer a class for dancers with disabilities for ages 3 through 18.” Classes accommodate after school and home schooling schedules.

Jeremiah Moore is the Visual Arts Department Head overseeing painting and drawing. He holds Masters of Fine Arts degree in Painting and has a background in ceramics, sculpture, and woodworking. His artwork has been exhibited on both the national and international level and in many private collections across the country. Since 2004 he has taught drawing, painting, and design to children, youth, and adults and thoroughly enjoys sharing three key areas of focus: technical proficiency, creativity, and critical thinking. “I focus on values and teaching methods that are family friendly,” says Moore. “We help our students to make intentional decisions about their artwork and their lives.” Hovis and Moore have collaborated to establish a conservatory for people who want to discover new interests, find a creative outlet, and seek professional training. They focus on all levels of study. “It’s the visual age, and students with a visual arts background have better skill sets from which to draw in the workforce,” says Hovis. When people think of ballet, they may assume that classes are geared toward younger students. Likewise, when people think of art classes, they may assume the lessons are geared toward an older audience seeking a hobby. But Hovis and Moore offer classes for everyone and welcome all skill levels. “You are never too old to dance and never too young to learn to paint,” says Hovis. To learn more about the Luce Conservatory of Fine Arts, visit www. lucearts.com. A family friendly environment awaits!

Politics and Religion: Real Health vs. Obamacare By Mark Williamson Federal Intercessors The Supreme Court, Chief John Roberts in particular, has just engaged in some of the worst, most egregious, judicial activism since Roe V Wade. Roberts redefined “Obamacare” to call the “penalty” a “tax,” and thus ruled that the law is constitutional. It is NOT constitutional! Furthermore, on a conference call addressing ramifications of the decision, I heard Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott make the great point that Roberts has now essentially legalized the taxation of “non-activity.” That is to say the federal government can now not only tax “activity” such as commerce, but now it can tax “non-activity” such as not purchasing health insurance. Abbott is right, and the reality of this new realm of taxation is so wrong and so dangerous it is hard if not impossible to overstate. The House has now voted to repeal “Obamacare,” but without a Republican Senate and President after the November election this will not happen – to the further harm of our health, economy, and nation. But the immediate question is what are you doing to preserve your health, live with energy? Also what will you do to avoid placing yourself at the mercy of the medical establishment, which is unwise at best, but will soon become overtly detrimental with bureaucrats running the system. I am not a scientist or doctor, but I can read, study, and compare. While this piece is just honest opinion, it is completely rooted in various scientific research sources and logic, and is more of a report that could help impact your life if you’ve got the good sense and

courage to take responsibility for your own health and that of your children. That may sound intimidating, but it’s really not. The first, basic premise is always, what does the Bible say? The Amplified version of the Bible, in the second phrase of Proverbs 18:9 says, “He who does not use his endeavors to heal himself is brother to him who commits suicide.” Rev 18:23, in the last phrase of this verse, says “. . . because all the nations were deceived by your sorcery.” So what does that have to do with health? The word sorcery in the original Greek is “pharmakeia,” where we get the word pharmacy. It means “medication” and by extension, “magic” – sorcery, witchcraft. This is clearly speaking, at least in part, of both legal and illegal drug use. While there are good and proper uses for medicines, they are significantly over utilized, with great risks, declining effectiveness, and great danger to the health of many who are

blindly trusting what “the system” says to do. Just consider the shock and disappointment that many will face when they’re older and their medical needs are too expensive to justify economically – according to a nameless, faceless bureaucrat administrating Obamacare. This is reflected in the following: the total number of retail drug prescriptions in the U. S. in 2010 was 3,703,594,389 which is an average of 12 prescriptions for every person in America. That’s one per month per person. There is something very wrong with that picture. Partially alleviating or hiding symptoms is NOT health! Now, we thank God for “crisis intervention” medications and technology. But the real, long-term health solution is summed up by how pioneer nutritional researcher Dr. Roger J. Williams (1893 - 1988) summed up his life’s work: “The human body heals itself, and nutrition provides the resources to accomplish the task.” The reality is we are “fearfully and wonderfully made” (Psalm 139:14). The body has the created capacity to heal itself if we put in it what God intended: the building blocks for better health. Essentially there are two ways to healing, by obedience to God’s wisdom and design, and His supernatural healing – through His word, and the “purchase” by the stripes of Jesus. It’s the absence of good, effective nutrition that is lacking for almost everyone everywhere. With complete ignorance of, or refusal to obey Biblical design for agriculture, our government and corporate

agriculture are turning us into a third World country nutritionally. We fail to rest the lands or rotate the crops, and instead use chemical fertilizers that too rapidly grow our foods in nutrient-depleted soils, followed up with green-harvesting our food long before it is matured and ready. We synthesize 95% of our vitamins from petroleum products, produce fuel from food (corn) to put in our cars, and genetically modify foods that damage our organs. Go figure! I’m aware of testimony in Congressional Hearings back in the 1930s regarding the nutritional depletion of our foods. It has only gotten worse since, and progressively much, much worse over the last 20 to 30 years. To be kind, we now have on average about 50% of the nutrition that we once had in our foods. I recently saw a statistic where it takes 58 peaches to equal the nutritional equivalent of two peaches 50 years ago. You can see this reflected in the government’s food pyramid and their recommendation on the number of servings of fruits and vegetables. If the trend continues, you won’t be physically capable of eating all the “rabbit food” you’ll need to stay healthy. And here’s this little tidbit of icing on the cake from Mercola.com; “In 2009, more than 50 percent of all Americans consumed one-half pound of sugar PER DAY—translating to a whopping 180 pounds of sugar per year. Sugar is loaded into your soft drinks, fruit juices, sports drinks, and hidden in almost all processed foods…. And now most infant formula has the sugar equivalent of one can of Coca-Cola, so babies are

being metabolically poisoned from day one if taking formula. No wonder there is an obesity epidemic in this country.” At least a few of us now know there are a class of nutrients called glyconutrients, the recently discovered “vital, plant digested carbohydrates” (just as there are “essential fatty acids” and “essential amino acids”), that are vital to health but missing in our diet due to the aforementioned depleted soils, rapid chemical fertilizer growth, and green harvesting; the results of which are an exploding epidemic of chronic diseases. The science of glycomics (glycobiology, glyconutrients, glycoproteins) is now irrefutable and the health benefits are powerful, though generally still unknown. The science is now being taught in medical school. The textbook “Harper’s Illustrated Biochemistry 27th Edition” has an entire chapter devoted to this subject, from which I quote (with their emphasis) the opening sentences of the chapter: “Glycobiology is the study of the roles of sugars in health and disease. The glycome is the entire complement of sugars, whether free or present in more complex molecules, of an organism. Glycomics, an analogous term to genomics and proteomics, is the comprehensive study of glycomes, including genetic, physiologic, pathologies and other aspects. One major class of molecules included in the glycome is glycoproteins. These are proteins that contain oligosaccharide chains (glycans) covalently attached to their polypeptide backbones. It has been estimated that approximately 50% of eukaryotic proteins have sugars attached, so that glycosylation (enzymatic attachment of sugars) is the most frequent posttranslational modification of proteins. Nonenzymatic attachment of sugars can also occur, and is referred to as glycation. This process can have serous pathologic consequences (eg, in uncontrolled diabetes mellitus).” Dr. John Rollins, former Howard University College of Medicine Professor and Bio-tech examiner of the U. S. Patent and Trademark Office calls glyconutrients “One of the most important healthcare

discoveries of the 21st Century . . . I believe the overall immunesupporting potential of glyconutrients represents the best integrative health strategy that science has to offer.” MIT’s Technology Review (February 2003) said, “Glycomics (is) one of the top 10 technologies that will change the world.” Take responsibility. Research and integrate the best options. Refuse to be placed in your own “Matrix pod” by those who continue to deceive and control society at every level. Contact me if you like. It’s your choice–and responsibility.
