Greetings! It’s time to catch our breath and enjoy the start of summer! Everyone seems especially happy to share news from the Christian front this time of year – and we have certainly packed this edition full of interviews and glad tidings. Christian authors are featured prominently in this issue. We interviewed two new local authors, Richard Capriola and Stephen W. Dyer. We also welcome “guest pastor” Ronnie McBrayer, who is a syndicated columnist, pastor, and author. He’ll continue to share insights and humor with us in the upcoming months, as well. We are honored to share our Christian business profile (Tim Sojka). As always, we also share outstanding student profiles and congratulate two Faith West graduates who both have the distinction of being 2014 valedictorians – with identical 4.75 GPAs! Another student-themed article covers the amazing feats of Ethan Settle, who will be interning at OceanLab in Aberdeen, Scotland this summer. As always, our Dear Doctor and Critters in Katy columns are full of advice, and you’ll also see a story about Hope Impacts and their good work within the homeless community. Be sure and check out our Social Column, which we hope blesses and inspires you. Thank you to our advertisers, columnists, interviewees and readers for supporting “news with an eternal purpose.” May You Be Richly Blessed, Joseph R. Letter From The Editor It was a privilege to interview Sergeant Justin Moyer and his K9 “Officer Marcel” for our cover feature. How fun to learn about the detection work of this great duo, as well as their special bond. Enjoy the beautiful photography, courtesy of our talented photographer Nikki Guest. We also interviewed director Mark Schmidt of “Walking With the Enemy,” a major motion picture that hit theaters in May. It was inspired by the true story of the final months of World War II and stars Ben Kingsley. The film is a portal into the struggles of Hungarian Jews during the Nazi occupation. And don’t miss our interview with singer/songwriter DeDe Wedekind! It’s a must-read... especially for those who answered a professional calling a bit “later” in life. You’ll also enjoy reading about the16,000 pounds of deep-fried pickles consumed during the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo! We hope these articles bless you, and it is an honor to bring your news about the organizations and people who make an impact in our community. Our summer intern, Olivia Ensley, was instrumental in proofing these stories about such amazing Christians. Melanie Saxton, Editor Katy Christian Magazine www.KatyChristianMagazine.com melanie@katychristianmagazine.com

Welcome to Our Staff We are pleased to introduce photographer Nikki Guest to the Katy Christian Magazine family. Nikki specializes in family, senior, and wedding photography. Pet and animal photography is also a passion, as she demonstrates on our cover after spending the day with “Officer Marcel,” a Katy ISD police dog. “I’m so happy to handle cover photography on behalf of Katy Christian Magazine,” says Nikki. “This issue was especially uplifting, as my kiddos were able to meet a wonderful Katy ISD police sergeant and canine team!” Connect with Nikki at www. nikkiguest.com or www.facebook.com/photographybynikkiguest. Olivia Ensley is a spending the summer interning with Katy Christian Magazine while on break from Hendrix College in Conway, Arkansas. She’s been busy editing feature articles, and watch for a byline or two in our upcoming issues. She’ll also be instrumental in the launch of Fort Bend Christian Magazine in August. Olivia was the founder and President of Creative Writing Club at White Station High School and associate section editor of the White Station Scroll Newspaper. She completed two novels during NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month) in 2012. We welcome her onboard and appreciate her keen eye.

A Police Dog Like No Other By Melanie Saxton Cover and feature photography by Nikki Guest School’s out! We’ve shown our gratitude to our teachers and the Katy ISD administration for a successful year. But one other crucial component within the district is the Katy ISD Police Department – and we certainly want to thank them, as well! Comprised of a 50-person staff, Katy ISD police officers serve our 67,000 local students and their families. Officers provide safety and security within Katy ISD regarding inclement weather to threats on campuses… to contraband. In fact, one “officer” on the Katy ISD police force is solely concerned with contraband. His name is “Officer Marcel,” an eight-year-old black Labrador whose single purpose is passive alert narcotics detection. He is canine certified to detect the odors of cocaine, marijuana, methamphetamines, and heroin. While he does not track people, he can locate narcotics in open fields or large areas when needed. And he’s just so darn cute that we had to showcase him on our front cover. A Daring Duo Marcel was originally purchased from Global Training Academy in France and shipped to the United States (which is how he got his French name). For five years he has served side-by-side with his very special handler, Sergeant Justin Moyer. The month of August will mark their 6th anniversary of K9 police work in the district – and Marcel’s 9th birthday.

Sgt. Moyer was fortunate in that he was allowed to visit Global Training Academy and personally choose from four different dogs. As he watched Marcel work, he knew there was a connection. “After I played and spent some time with him, I knew he was the right dog for me,” says Sgt. Moyer, who returned to the Global Training Academy for a three week narcotics

detection handler class. He learned about canine psychology and how and why dogs “work,” as well as how odor travels and are detected by the dogs. “I had to take a written exam and pass a certification exam with Marcel before we could officially become a team,” he notes. A Special Breed of People Sgt. Moyer wanted to be a police officer from the time he was five years old, and throughout school never changed his mind. He enjoys the fact that he is able to help and protect others in their times of need. Originally from Katy, he liked the idea of working with students. This is one of the few places where an officer can really see the positive effects he has on students, which is highly rewarding. In October of 2013 he was promoted to the rank of Sergeant with the Katy ISD Police Department, where he has served for seven years. In all, he has been a patrol officer for 12 years. Canine handlers are a special breed of people, and not just any officer is right for the job. Each department has different methods of vetting appropriate candidates. When Katy ISD had a handler vacancy, the command staff sent out an email asking for letters of interest. Sgt. Moyer expressed his interest, and the canine commander explained the expectations and dedication required. Ultimately, Sgt. Moyer was selected. “To be a canine handler, I feel that you must have a love of dogs, a commitment to something bigger than yourself, and a good work ethic.” He noted that much of being a handler involves self-motivation. “While some of our work is requested by other officers or schools, much of our work is self-initiated,” he adds. The Duties a Police K9 Team Marcel is tasked with sniffing for narcotics in classrooms, locker rooms, in the lockers in the hallways, vehicles (both in parking lots and on traffic stops), as well as special occasions in which he checks student and faculty luggage prior to trips from school. He and Sgt. Moyer train together quite a bit to keep Marcel’s skills sharp. Marcel also gets re-certified each year

by Global Training Academy on all four of the odors, which allows him to continue work the next year. Most people are unaware of Marcel’s “job,” which is normally not publicized. “Since Marcel and I have been partners, we have performed over 950 searches throughout the district and with other agencies, and have helped file well over a hundred criminal charges,” says Sgt. Moyer. Marcel is assigned to Katy ISD, but he and Sgt. Moyer have been called out to assist other agencies such as the Katy Police Department, the Harris County Sheriff ’s Department, the Fort Bend County Sheriff ’s Department, the Department of Public Safety, the Harris County Precinct 5 Constable’s Office, and the Brookshire Police Department. “We are willing to help any agency or officer that contacts us if a narcotics canine is needed,” explains Sgt. Moyer. Work is Play When asked what kind of temperament is needed in a good police dog, Sgt. Moyer notes that different dogs have different temperaments for the type of work they are asked to do. “Most have a playful or relaxed personality, which makes their training easier to maintain,” says Sgt. Moyer. “Marcel has a playful and high drive personality, which makes him very good at detection work. Narcotics canines usually like to play and have more of an independent personality.” In the mornings as Sgt. Moyer gets into uniform, Marcel becomes aware that it’s time to “go to work.” But sniffing for odor is really a game of hide and seek. He doesn’t know that what he is looking for is bad, dangerous or even illegal. “All Marcel knows is that he is trained to locate a source of odor, and when he finds the source he gets to play with his toy,” says Sgt. Moyer. Marcel’s “Kong” – a toy that he gets only when he is working – has a high reward value for him. Life Behind the Scenes Marcel is more than “just a dog” to Sgt. Moyer. They live together 24/7/365 and are basically “family.” An extremely tight bond runs deep due to the nature of their duties. Certainly, their work can be dangerous and they rely on each other daily. Speaking of danger, if a police dog is wounded in the line of duty, the offender isn’t charged specifically with “assault against a police officer.” But there are several other offenses that someone could be charged with if they interfere, injure, or assault a police canine. Being a police officer is tough work. “I hold my job not only as a police officer, but as a canine handler, in high regard,” says Sgt. Moyer. “That has taken priority, and that is where the dedication and devotion to the job and my dog come into play.” Although he is not married, Sgt. Moyer has family, holidays, birthdays and other special events that he’d like to attend. Fortunately, his family has been very understanding of the hours and shifts that he has worked throughout his career. The bottom line is that he feels fortunate and honored to have the opportunity to be a canine handler with Marcel as his partner and family member. Police canines do things that no human officer can do, whether through narcotics detection, explosives detection or fugitive apprehension. “Marcel is a huge asset to this department as well as the district, and there is no way to measure the amount of deterrent he brings to the job just by being present,” says Sgt. Moyer. In short, Marcel makes the schools and district a safer place for students, faculty and visitors.

We asked if a memorial place exists to honor police dogs who have passed away – a place that people can visit. “Each department is different as to how they handle the memorial place of their respective canines,” says Sgt. Moyer. “Our department has a plaque and a flag on display in our training room for one of our canines who passed away. There is also a site dedicated to the fallen police canines on the “Officer Down Memorial Page.” Some departments have a full dress funeral for the fallen canine just as if they were human officers. “I believe it would be up to the handler and the command staff to decide what type of memorial service is done for a fallen canine,” notes Sgt. Moyer.

When the Time Comes Police canines normally retire after they turn 9 or 10 years old, depending on their health and work drive. Some work longer, and some less, due to those factors. When the time comes, they are normally retired out to their handlers and become pets who live out the rest of their lives as “typical” dogs. Marcel is going strong and has a vibrant future in the force, but will inevitably one day live a life of leisure at home.

Connect with Cops The Katy ISD Police Department Facebook page is full of photos of officers in action and can be found at www. facebook.com/KISDPD. You’ll find more photos of Marcel on their posts. Keep Marcel, Sgt. Moyer and all of the men and women in uniform in your prayers so that they may stay safe. Their service is a blessing to us all.

Marine Biology, Up Close and Personal By Christina Dodson So… how will you be spending your summer? Chances are, it won’t be in Scotland. 14-year-old Ethan Settle, however, will leave Katy and arrive in Aberdeen for more than a vacation. In fact, he’ll be visiting the University of Aberdeen’s Oceanlab for a two week

internship. Ethan is interested in the general field of marine biology. He’s been involved with the ocean his whole life, exploring beaches since he was a toddler. Remarkably, he took the initiative to email the world’s top ten researchers in Hadal Ecology and expressed his interest in these nearly undiscovered ecosystems. A Prestigious Internship His efforts paid off, and now he’ll pursue his passion overseas as he discovers more about the world’s deepest ocean trenches — those of the Hadal Zone. This zone contains the Mariana Trench, where depths reach over 36,000 feet and pressures are 1,100 times sea level. It is so remote and foreboding that it has been reached only by two explorers in 1960, and by James Cameron in 2012. Ethan will be joining Dr. Alan Jamieson at the University of Aberdeen’s Oceanlab for two weeks. Oceanlab is involved with

HADEEP (HADal Environment and Educational Program), a collaborative project aimed at studying “life at extreme depth; fishes and scavenging fauna of the abyssal to hadal boundary.” The overarching point of HADEEP is to design, construct and operate new technology capable of imaging and collecting biological samples from the deepest places on Earth. The team studies depth-related and geographic trends, as well as physiology and behavior of ocean animals as they inhabit an extreme environment in regards to high pressure, low temperature and low food supply. Ethan’s work will center on the examination of Hadal samples collected this spring by Dr. Jamieson using robotic ROV’s (remotely operated vehicles). In preparation for the internship, Ethan took a college-level online marine biology course. He was was officially scuba certified during a family Christmas vacation last year in Belize. Experience of a Lifetime “I’m going to work with Dr. Jamison and help collect samples, and will also input data,” says Ethan. “Basically, we’ve explored 5% of the

world’s oceans, and since most oceans are very deep we have a whole lot to learn.” His proud parents Alecia and Edwin Settle, along with his younger sister Angeline, are excited about the trip, although only Mom Alecia will travel with Ethan. All in all, the excursion will last three weeks (two “on the job” and one for travel and sightseeing). They will be leaving behind Ethan’s cat Sophia, dog Max, and (no surprise) his saltwater fish tank filled with sea anemones, clown fish, and a cleaner shrimp named Xavier. The Future Ethan is involved in varsity basketball and track. This fall, he’ll be a 10th grader at Faith West Academy, and is a member of the National Junior Honor Society. He chose Faith West because he wanted a smaller campus, smaller classes… and most importantly, he wanted to attend a Christian high school. We wish him well in his endeavors! How remarkable that we have a worldwide traveler and young scientist living right here in Katy.

Walking With the Enemy: The Movie By Melanie Saxton It was an honor to interview Mark Schmidt, director of “Walking With the Enemy,” a major motion picture inspired by the true story in the final months of World War II. This story is little-known to American audiences, but is well-known in Hungary. It resembles “Schindler’s List” in its portrayal of the Nazi occupation. The film hit theaters April 25 in over 35 top cities. Schmidt had learned of a war hero, Pinchas Rosenbaum, whose name popped up online and in books. Intrigued, he visited Budapest to research Rosenbaum’s Hungarian village and interview various people. He was inspired to write a screenplay loosely based on Rosenbaum’s escapades. For him, the message and meaning of the film assured him that the effort, no matter how unlikely or monumental, would be worth it. “Everything in the film is true, although the name of the hero is changed,” says Schmidt, who adds that it took a lot of work to get a got PG 13 rating due to the realism and emotion. “It’s tastefully done so people won’t be overwhelmed.” Suspense, romance, action and heartfelt realism shine on the screen.

World War II “War is hell,” writes theologian and philosopher Frederich Buechner. “But sometimes in the midst of that hell, men do things that heaven itself must be proud of.” This rings true in the case of Elek Cohen (played by Jonas Armstrong), a young hero whose unlikely journey through the waning months of World War II gives him an opportunity to perform unimaginably heroic deeds. At first, life in Hungary was untouched by the war. While neighboring countries like Poland and Austria saw their Jewish populations scattered and destroyed, Hungarian Jews lived out the course of the war with relatively few restrictions and limited awareness of the extent of what was happening to their cousins and families elsewhere.

Hungary had a very unique relationship to Germany during the 1930s and the worldwide depression. They grew to rely on the economic assistance of Axis powers Germany and Italy and joined the Axis early on, but their relationship to Germany was always strained. The anticommunist regent and virtual dictator of Hungary, Miklas Horthy (played by Sir Ben Kingsley), focused on protecting the people of Hungary (including the Jews) regardless of what his German allies asked him to do.

Hungarians First and Foremost Remarkably for the time, Hungary’s Jews made up about six percent of the population and were embedded in the nation’s social and economic structure. One pre-war survey says that over 40% of the doctors and veterinarians in the country were Jewish, along with over a third of the journalists. To Horthy, their religious identity didn’t matter – the people of his country were all Hungarians first and foremost. Though Hungarian troops fought with the Nazis in their failed at-

tempt to defeat the Soviet Union on the Eastern front, Hungary was also secretly trying to negotiate peace treaties with America and her allies. Indeed, in March 1944 the Hungarian leadership talked peace terms. This act pushed Hitler and his military leaders to stage a coup. Berlin sent in troops, and Hungary was forced to bow to the will of Hitler and Eichmann. Jewish citizens who had been protected from persecution were now vulnerable to full out terror on the streets. Underground Heroics Elek was called up to work at a Jewish Hungarian labor camp — a particularly bad one — and escaped back to his village. As the occupying Nazi forces scrambled madly to relocate – and likely exterminate – thousands of Jews, Elek discovered that no one was left at his village. He traveled to Budapest in a desperate attempt to find his loved ones and joined a group of resistors who provided forged passports to Jewish families. But he also stole the uniform of a Nazi officer, and in a moment of courage masqueraded as an SS officer to divert a group of Jews headed onto a train. “Elek risks his life time after time, when he easily could have just hidden away,” says filmmaker Mark Schmidt. “But he did everything possible, without an army or a government behind him.” For the remainder of the war Elek was at great risk and realized that his own family was likely never to be found. Still, he used his perfect German to confuse the Nazis and save as many lives as possible. Though the violence against his country and his people seemed endless and insurmountable, he slowly proved that anyone with a good heart and a strong will can emerge as a hero.

Houstonians want, need, and deserve a judge who honors the Constitution, follows the law, and lets the facts take him to a just decision. For five years, that’s the kind of Judge I’ve tried to be for the citizens I’m so proud and honored to serve.

Screenings and Survivors To make the film as authentic as possible, Schmidt interviewed 40 people from the past, noting that there aren’t many left due to age. He found it interesting to talk to survivors about war, which brings out the best and worst of people. “I really got educated on human nature. It woke me up a bit. Everyone coexisted and had been friends for zillions of years, then all the sudden Jews were the enemy,” he notes. A lot of survivors were disappointed in their Hungarian neighbors, although a few nonJews risked their lives to help others. Test screenings in four states and film festivals drew moviegoers and history buffs alike. Incredibly, Schmidt also heard from some Holocaust deniers, or at least those who white wash the atrocities. Once someone commented, “Boy, Mark, you got it wrong. Hitler only put people to sleep who were dying, and the Jews don’t deserve to get their property back.” People showed up for screenings in Los Angeles, New York and San Diego. “It sold out at Palm Springs Film Festival and does have a good ending,” says Schmidt. “I loved it when men get tears in their eyes. Women usually admit it, but men don’t,” he notes. A Notable Cast and Crew For Schmidt and producer Randy Williams of Liberty Studios, the project was a multi-year labor of love. With a complicated production schedule and shooting locations in both Europe and the United States, they hired quality professionals in order to make an authentic and mean-

ingful period film. Academy Award-winning actor Sir Ben Kingsley portrays the beleaguered Hungarian leader Regent Horthy. “To be honest, I couldn’t think of anyone else but Sir Ben Kingsley. Sir Ben has a great heart, and he’s got a passion for right against evil that really drew him to the part. He is an extraordinary professional,” says Schmidt. The same was true of the rest of cast, most of them from Great Britain, were also moved by Elek’s story and the opportunity to bring this unique story to life. Dublin-born Jonas Armstrong, best known for playing the title role in the BBC series “Robin Hood” and opposite Chloe Sevigny in the acclaimed and controversial miniseries “Hit and Miss,” proved to have exactly the right combination of experience and ability that was needed to bring Elek to life. Hannah Tointon also stars as Elek’s love interest. The principal crew includes Academy Award-nominees like cinematographer Dean Cundey (“Apollo 13,” “Who Framed Roger Rabbit”) and editor Richard Nord (“The Fugitive”). In Theaters The movie opened in Studio 30, Willow brook, First colony, Tinseltown 290, Cinemark 19, Marquee West Oaks and other local theaters. It will run as long as audiences attend, and then will be available on DVD. As a historic film that shares a relatively unknown part of WWII, the PG-13 rating allows younger audiences to experience what war meant globally. We recommend it as a worthy addition to any home library… and if you have the chance, definitely see it!

God’s Critters in Katy By Paige Holsapple Chipping is so important! With Independence Day just around the corner, we should brace ourselves for fireworks, explosions, and lots of visual stimulation. Remember that our pets see and hear all the commotion, just like we do. But to them, this may be far from a fun celebration. In fact, our dogs and cats can become terrified and run away. Statistics show that the 4th of July is one of the highest incident festivities in which pets are reported lost. Microchips greatly increase the chances that you’ll get your pet back if he/she is lost or stolen, ESPECIALLY during the 4th of July… but a microchip only works if its registration information is accurate. To remind pet owners to have their pets microchipped and to keep the registration information up-to-date, the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) and the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) joined together to create “Check the Chip Day.” Although this event falls after the fourth of July, still mark your calendars for August 15th – a national day to commemorate the importance of chipping.

June / July 2014

Take advantage of this reminder: • Make an appointment with your veterinarian for microchipping if your pet isn’t already microchipped (then make sure that your pet’s chip is immediately registered. • Or take advantage of the quarterly Katy Community ‘Chip Clinic — watch for updates on the Cinco Ranch Area Lost and Found Pet Network Facebook page.

• Check your already-microchipped pet’s registration information in the microchip manufacturer’s database, and make sure it’s up-to-date. If Your Pet is Lost on the 4th of July • Replenish your lost pet posters – keep plenty on hand! • Place lost pet posters at all local events. • Place lost pet posters at all entrances to your neighborhood. • Put your lost pet flier on your front door. • Put a large lost pet poster in your front yard. • Pass out small fliers to everyone in your neighborhood. • Notify your chipping service, local veterinarians, and groomers. • Notify shelters, rescue groups and animal control centers. • Check Craigslist for reported “found animal” posts From the AVMA To update your pet’s registration, you’ll need your pet’s microchip number. If you haven’t already created an account with the manufacturer, you’ll need to do that as well so you can access the registration in the future to update the information. Make sure that all of the information, particularly your phone number(s) and address, are correct. There are many databases that allow you to register your pet’s

microchip, but the one that really counts – the one that animal shelters and veterinarians will search – is the database maintained by the manufacturer of your pet’s microchip: AAHA’s Universal Pet Microchip Lookup Tool at www.petmicrochiplookup.org/. This internet-based application is linked to the registries of the majority of microchip manufacturers and allows a quick database search of any microchip made by these manufacturers. In addition, a number of public microchip linked to the AAHA Universal Pet Microchip Lookup Tool at www.petmicrochiplookup.org make it easier to find a microchip’s registration. Connect Online Pet lovers can join the AVMA’s Facebook event at www.facebook.com/events/588852667832228/. Be sure and spread the word about our local Katy Community ‘Chip Clinic, as well! Be safe out there and safeguard your dogs and cats this summer! Paige Holsapple is one of Katy’s well-known animal advocates, often helping owners locate missing pets. She is also a graphic designer and photographer. You can connect with her on Facebook at just about any animal or shelter group. Meet Author Richard Capriola By Ann Baker Author Richard Capriola, a Katyite, has a new book out on the market. “A Nation Under Judgment” reviews social policies from a scriptural point of view and asks readers to explore whether our nation is moving away from being “one nation under God.” Are the words merely a political slogan with meaning only in times of national crises… or are they a guidepost for how our nation shapes its policies and programs? Capriola hopes that reading the book will give audiences a deeper understanding of what it truly means to be “one nation under God.” It provides a road map back to our Biblical roots by helping readers gain an understanding of how our nation was founded on Christian principles. Backstory Capriola completed four years of Clinical Pastoral education and has served as a hospital chaplain and mental health counselor. His writing journey began over seven years ago, starting with the simple idea of writing a book about wisdom from a Biblical point of view. Capriola began to explore different definitions. What is wisdom? How is it defined, and by whom? What does it mean? He found several secular definitions, but not a Biblical definition.

“Finally, I remembered a sermon that defined wisdom as “the ability to see things from God’s point of view.” He suddenly had his answer – wisdom is not so much how we see things in this world, but rather how God sees things. Then Capriola began to explore how God might view our nation and its policies. How are we doing as we construct our social policies? Do we do so from wisdom, or from a political agenda? “I also wondered what had happened to the great and powerful nations of the past – nations that lost their wisdom,” adds Capriola. Social Policies The first chapter gives an overview of our historical roots as a nation,

and reviews nations that strayed from God’s point of view. What happened to all the great empires of the past? Many of them have histories much longer than ours, yet today they are found only on the pages of history books. Could it be that they strayed away and faced judgment? Capriola identified social policies regarding poverty, homelessness, the environment, marriage, gambling, pornography, greed and gluttony, as well as others, and then contrasted that with God’s scriptural point of view. Each chapter is devoted to a specific social policy, and there is also a chapter on “The Power to Persuade,” which reviews how policies are constructed with an emphasis on money rather than scripture. HAS SOMETHING GONE TERRIBLY WRONG IN AMERICA? Political Responsibility W “Our Founding Fathers knew that we could not indefinitely exist apart from God’s point of view,” says Capriola. “George Mason warned that providence would punish national sins with national calamities. Thomas Jefferson R said, ‘I tremble for my country when I reflect that God is just and that his justice cannot sleep forever.’ These great men understood that our nation’s future rests on its commitment to live by the words ‘one nation under God,’ and that we must create national polices that reflect His point of view rather than policies that conform to a political agenda.” He believes that Christians cannot escape their responsibility to hold those they elect to public office accountable for crafting polices that reflect God’s point of view. “If our nation is losing its wisdom – its hat does it mean to be “one nation under God”? Our Founding Fathers believed it was more than a political slogan. Have we strayed from their vision? A Nation Under Judgment focuses on issues currently facing our country, such as hunger, homelessness, marriage, income inequality and poverty. These subjects are reviewed from a social policy and Scriptural point of view, empowering readers to decide whether or not our nation is moving away from God. What others are saying about A Nation Under Judgment:

“Well researched and Scripturally based, A Nation Under Judgment seeks to be a catalyst for inspiring believers toward deeper biblical thought regarding social policy.” Heather Randall, CEO of Christian Women Affiliate “This is a book that needs to be read…Get comfy with a nice cup of tea or coffee and be prepared to be mentally and spiritually stimulated.” Lisa Keva, CWA Reviewer “Every legislator, and every believer, apologetic, preacher and evangelist needs this resource on their shelves.” Delores Liesner, CWA Reviewer

“An important review of our nation’s social policies from a Scriptural point of view that should capture every Christian’s attention.” CBM Christian Book Reviews “A Nation Under Judgment is a clarion call to the dangers of national pride, indifference, exploitation, current trends, and of the danger of a nation moving away from God’s point of view.” Richard R. ability to see things from God’s point of view – we have a responsibility to advocate for change and to elect leaders who believe that “one nation under God” is not merely a political slogan, but a call to action that will bring our policies into line with God’s point of view,” he notes. Why Read the Book? “A Nation Under Judgment” is primarily intended for Christians, especially those who believe our nation is losing its way. As one reviewer noted, “A Nation Under Judgment is a clarion call to the dangers of national pride, indifference, exploitation, current trends, and the dangers of a nation moving away from God’s point of view.” Another review notes that the book is an important review of our nation’s social policies from a Scriptural point of view that should capture every Christian’s attention.” A third reviewer said, “Every legislator, and every believer, apologetic, preacher and evangelist needs this resource on their shelves.” A Note from the Author “I have felt a burden to write a Nation Under Judgment for a long time,” says Capriola. “I think this book gives evidence in a concrete way that many of our concerns have merit. This is perhaps the only resource that compares our nation’s social polices from a scriptural point of view, and I believe many Christians who fear our nation is moving away from God will find evidence to support their belief by reading ‘A Nation Under Judgment.’” Visit www.anationunderjudgment.com to learn more, and purchase a copy at Amazon and Barnes & Noble.

Guest Pastor Profile: Ronnie McBrayer Note from the editor: We were so pleased to connect with Ronnie McBrayer, a nationally syndicated columnist, pastor, and author. He wears various “hats” as a chaplain, leader in social justice ministries, and a writer. He holds degrees in Christian Education and Theology, with post-graduate studies in Bio-Ethics and Critical Incident Stress Management. His post-Katrina relief work with Habitat for Humanity was featured by the CBS Evening News and the New York Times. McBrayer’s weekly newspaper column, “Keeping the Faith,” began as a devotional article for his local newspaper. It is now nationally syndicated with a circulation of more than six million readers. His trust in Christ is contagious, as is his schoolboy wit and applauded story-telling style. His newest book is “The Gospel According to Waffle House.” You can read more at www.ronniemcbrayer.me. We are pleased to introduce him to our readers at Katy Christian Magazine and share his “Keeping the Faith” column. Keeping the Faith: School’s Out By Ronnie McBrayer Curtain climbers. Yard monkeys. Cherubs. Whippersnappers. Ankle

biters. Urchins. I don’t know what you call them, but our children have been turned loose on the world. School is out for summer (at least it ends this week here where I live). By the end of summer I’m afraid my description of these little animals will be a bit stronger. I’ll be ready for them to return to the halls of learning. Still, I appreciate their euphoria. I can recall the butterflies that formed in my stomach as summer break approached each year: “No more pencils, no more books, no more teachers’ dirty looks.” It was a sweet release. Now, this does not mean my summers were always easy. I worked on my uncle’s poultry farm every summer from the time I was twelve or so until graduation. And ironically, it was those hot, stinking chicken houses that convinced me to stay in school and get a college education. But as a kid anything – anything – was better than sitting in a dull classroom doing algebra problems, memorizing Lord Byron, and studying vocabulary words. Even if that meant doing hard labor shoveling, well, you know what. So, I still get giddy this time of year just thinking about escaping for the summer. But I’m not the only one – nor are my children. The real happiness is found in empty classrooms and the absence of teachers. At least I know my sons’ teachers are dancing. These dear souls will probably be sitting somewhere in a retirement home sixty years from now, telling horror stories about those McBrayer boys. Preachers’ kids are the worst, you know. I hope their teachers don’t

tear up their contracts this summer and refuse to return. It’s been said that if teachers were paid like professional athletes, and if athletes were paid like teachers, our society would be a much better place. Amen to that. But money is not the reason these men and women give themselves to the classroom. Sure, teachers would take a raise (or two), but they teach for other reasons. They teach because they love working with children. They teach because they are drawn to a particular subject. Or they teach because as a student, they themselves were greatly influenced by a teacher. In fact, influence seems to be the real reason teachers teach. Aside from teachers, only parents and close family members have the same kind of impact on youngsters. This influence is incalculable. The Apostle James said, “My brothers and sisters, most of you shouldn’t want to be teachers. You know that those of us who teach will be held more accountable.” Why this higher standard? Because teachers have an extra responsibility, not only as adults whom little ones observe, but also as ones who encode and train our children. Teachers are the architects and designers of the future. That is, indeed, a great responsibility. Too many times we who stand behind pulpits or travel to the “mis-

sion field” (whatever that means) monopolize the market on doing God’s work. But everyone – everyone – has opportunity to do the work of God. This is doubly true for teachers. Theirs is nothing less than a divine calling. Sure, there are a few bad apples in the educational barrel – those who do not take their calling or responsibility seriously enough, or who give the profession a bad name – you can find these kinds of folks in all career fields. Yet, all in all, teachers are a heroic lot who deserve our support, admiration, and even our prayers. God knows if I were matched against twentyfive second graders every day, I’d want someone praying for me. And to my sons’ middle school teachers, a final word before you slip into the rapture of a kid-less summer: My wife and I have one more son coming your way. As he has been cultured by his older brothers, he may be the most challenging one yet. Regular readers of this column can confirm this for you. So accept my apology in advance. I’ll be praying for you.

A Chat with Singer DeDe Wedekind By Melanie Saxton DeDe Wedekind grew up in Katy, graduated from Katy High, and now lives in north Houston. This professional crossover Christian artist is a classically trained singer, pianist, and flute player, and now also a songwriter. She abandoned music for a marketing career because it “made more sense,” but about seven years ago started hearing songs in her head – songs she had never heard before. Getting Back to Her Music Roots “I started dreaming about music,” she explains. Her husband agreed that she needed to get back into music full-time. She received her associate’s degree in music and “re-learned vocal performance, piano, songwriting, and musical theory – and regained confidence and belief in her life’s calling. “I prayed that God would lead me, and He did. But you know what? I couldn’t have handled this career when I was younger,” she explains. “I needed more life experience. I didn’t have the skill sets, the toughness, and the supportive spouse I have now.” So with the Lord’s timing, everything she learned to this point – the marketing, writing, music – all came full circle.

Award Winning Music Returning to music is the hardest thing DeDe has ever done, but also the most rewarding. And she has news to share about her two major music awards! This past March she was named as a finalist in the 2013 International Songwriting Competition for her original “The

Fairy Tale Song” in the Children’s Music Category. She was also awarded Best Vocalist of the Month for March 2014 from SingerUniverse.com. In addition, she was the March 1 Runner Up for Best Song of the Month on Songwriter Universe.com for her hit song, “Blame It On the Summertime.” DeDe comes from a long line of actors, storytellers and musicians on her father’s Welsh side, and is also one of seven musical children from an exceptionally creative family. DeDe credits God for returning her to her gift. One of the most important songs on her album is “The Fairy Tale Song,” written for kids and teens (and “kids” of all ages) to encourage them. Everyone can find their talents and dreams, take chances, work hard, have patience, and make those dreams become a reality.

my purpose, and my peace.” Celine Dion, Adele, Taylor Swift, Amy Grant, and Sarah McLaughlin… she’s been compared to them all. But DeDe doesn’t strive to be like anyone else. “I have a very versatile voice and try not to limit myself to one sound or genre,” she says. She loves experimenting with “world” music and melody, and her mission is to bring hope, joy and comfort. She strives to plant the seeds of God’s love with relatable, yet positive lyrics, and beautiful, memorable melodies.

A Role Model for “Later in Life” Because she got her start as a professional singer and songwriter a little later in life, she feels like a role model (of sorts) for what can be accomplished when we believe in ourselves, use our talents, work hard and be persistent, no matter what our situations are. “You can’t let things like age, self-doubt, fear, or finances stop you,” she says. “I’m not afraid anymore. I’m not afraid to say the things I feel need to be said, and to take a chance with my music. I’ve found my joy,

Fans Love Her Apparently her 50,000 Facebook fans agree (she has another 40,000 on various social media), and DeDe thanks them for supporting local artists. “I’m floored,” she says of the accolades. Both of her winning songs were co-written with D. Koch of Nashville, who is also her producer. As part of her mission, DeDe supports charities for women and children, such as Covenant House, The Door, Humble Area Assistance Ministries, Village Learning Center, World Vision, and the African Children’s Choir with proceeds from her music. Connect with DeDe You can visit www.DeDe-Music.com/Music, www.DeDe-Music. com and www.facebook.com/DeDeWedekind for more information about DeDe’s music, which is also available on iTunes and Amazon. com.

Hope Impacts our Community By Tina Hatcher Being part of a community that offers hope is what brought our family to Katy 20 years ago: hope for a better education for our children, hope for a close knit, caring community where our kids could grow up making lifelong friends, hope for a better life, hope for a Christian Community that celebrates all God is and all He is accomplishing. As our family settled into this great community we did find these things to be true. Over the years I’ve met many people that moved here for the same reason – hope for a better life. Through the years there has also been another realization, not everyone realizes hope in the same way. We live in a very prosperous community. But do we see the marginalized around us? We are blessed in many ways. What do we do with those blessings? Do we share? Do we serve? Do we reach out to others not like us? It has become evident to me that sometimes we are oblivious to those in our community that are not prosperous, people that are helpless, hurting, often hopeless.

For the last four years impacting the community has become a part of how our family lives. We have been intentionally focused on seeing the unseen, making the invisible- visible, sharing hope to those that find themselves helpless, homeless, under resourced, reaching those without the resources, information or support that many of us take for granted on a daily basis. And in the past several months our paths have crossed with several others that have this same heart or vision. There are many individuals that are taking it upon themselves to offer hope, because they recognize the need is here. It has been educational, eye opening, humbling and convicting. Armed with a new awareness of others with the same goals, a idea

formed for an umbrella organization that could warehouse opportunities and resources, and therefore make what was happening more effective. It would be easier to do this together rather than a wide blast of disconnected efforts. So I contacted several churches, organizations and individuals and asked them if they would be willing to meet together to share ideas and information. On February 9, 2014, we had our first meeting. Nineteen different people, from different backgrounds, different faiths, and with different abilities, came together to share their hearts, visions, resources and ideas. We talked about what we knew was being done in our community to meet needs and what we thought still may need to be done. Out of the reality that we would be much more effective if we shared our resources, information and ideas, HOPE IMPACTS was formed. Hope Impacts is about partnership. It’s about people, businesses, churches, and other organizations partnering together to meet the needs of our community. When we share all of these things, the impact of hope is even greater. The outreach of multiple resources and information is much more that any of us can do on our own. One example of this type of partnership is the story of Steve. Steve

is one of my street friends. He is not able to work because he has a bad back and needs surgery. He is living in his truck. He has no income, no insurance, and no support. In my relationship with Steve I stop and talk with him often. He always tells me he has plenty of food, blankets, coats, etc. One day a few weeks ago I said “Steve, there must be something you need.” Steve loves to read. He shared with me that his eyes were getting progressively worse and it was more and more difficult for him to read. He was afraid something really wrong was going on. Then he said it had been decades since he had his eyes examined. The very next day I had lunch with my friend Mindy Adams. I shared with her Steve’s story. Mindy has a lot of community contacts that I do not have. She called Brett Donaldson the next day. Dr. Brett Donaldson is one of the doctors at Grand Vision Optometry. He agreed to examine Steve’s eyes and get him the glasses that he needed. One week later Steve had his new pair of glasses. He is still trying to get used to them. He is very grateful that someone cared enough to take care of a basic need - being able to see well. This type of story is what Hope Impacts is all about – building partnerships, sharing resources, caring for those in need. Our Mission is: To Network caring people providing partnerships, information, and resources to address the physical, emotional, financial, and spiritual needs of the homeless, helpless, and under resourced in the Katy Community. If you want more information on Hope Impacts or have a service that you provide to the Katy Community, we would like to add to our resource list at www.hopeimpacts.net . You may also email Tina Hatcher, Executive Director at tinah542@gmail.com, or call the Hope Impacts line at 713-705-7884.

16,000 Pounds of Deep-Fried Pickles! By Holly Chervnsik This past March, the 2014 Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo broke the 20day attendance record with 2.48 million fans. Paid attendance reached a record 1.37 million as crowds cheered on champion rodeo performers, plus a notable slate of superstar entertainers at the Reliant Stadium. All this excitement reminds us why we endure sore feet and junk food… because the fun is definitely worth it! My family spent several days celebrating this uniquely Texas annual event and can’t wait for next year! Here’s a look back at some fun facts you may not have heard of… and boy, oh boy, the numbers are astounding! It’s All In Your Head Women should feel healthy, vibrant and strong throughout their adult lives. If you've been told, “it's all in your head” or “learn to live with it,” read on.

Maggie's story Maggie came to Hotze Health & Wellness Center after suffering for seven years from depression and fatigue, which developed after giving birth to her second child. She also had a lifelong history of cold hands and feet and sensitivity to cold. She was experiencing significant hair loss, was constipated and had severe muscle aches. Even after sleep, Maggie never felt rested.

Maggie's treatment

Maggie had experienced recurrent sinus infections and headaches over the past seven years, for which she had taken antibiotics. She also complained of recurrent abdominal cramping and bloating associated with the ingestion of sugar and bread products, which she craved. Since her last pregnancy, Maggie's menstrual cycles had been irregular. She had gained 30 pounds over the past seven years and had difficulty losing weight. She had lost all sexual desire, and felt that she was in a “brain fog.”

Maggie's name could easily be erased from her chart and replaced with the names of thousands of other women in midlife whom we have evaluated. Maggie's doctor made her feel that she was a hypochondriac and emotionally inadequate. We explained to her that her symptoms were very common to women in her age group and were easily treated.

Maggie had sought the care of numerous physicians. They told her that she was “depressed” and prescribed antidepressants. A friend of hers, who was a patient at Hotze Health & Wellness Center, told her that there was a natural alternative treatment for her problems, so Maggie came to us for an evaluation.

She had an imbalance in her female hormones that adversely affected her body's ability to use thyroid hormones. It was the change in her hormones that triggered her allergy disorder, which in turn led to recurrent sinus infections. The antibiotics that she had taken for her infections also killed normal bacteria in her body and allowed yeast problems to occur.

If you are like Maggie and you want to get your life back, then contact us today at

Maggie was prescribed natural bioidentical hormones, natural thyroid supplementation, and was treated for allergies with sublingual immunizing drops given under the tongue daily. Within two months, Maggie's depression and fatigue had disappeared. She was able to discontinue her antidepressants. She told us, “I have not felt this good in years. Thank you for giving me my life back!” June / July 2014

Christian Business Profile: Tim Sojka By June Summerfield We love Tim Sojka. This high energy marketing expert specializes in Katy real estate and is the president of See Tim Sell Realty. If you ask him about our community, he’ll say it has the best schools, the best parks, the best real estate market… and that it’s easy to love Katy. But he also notes our local churches. “Katy boasts some of the strongest community churches in the country. There are hundreds of ways to get involved within a church community no matter what your faith,” he says. A “Stand Out” Mission When it comes to laying your head down at night, we all look forward to the comforts of home. This is where our loved ones and most treasured possessions belong, and a place that build memories and anchors families. Buying or selling a home is a personal and emotional endeavor, and it’s wise to seek the best representation. Tim has earned the status as “top realtor” through negotiating expertise and advocacy for his clients. But his special way of doing business includes a lot of fun… and many “extras,” as you’ll see below.

So how does a business stand out amongst the 33,000 marketing messages we are all bombarded with daily? “From our crazy wrapped cars, to our full sized Mascot BIG TIM, to our colorful ads, our team is definitely known for our marketing,” says Tim. In fact, “$181,000,000,000 , 8 Years, 1 Method” is his mantra. “Yes the crazy marketing gets people’s attention and it captures a lot of first time clients, however the secret to success is pleasing your

Do you think I just need new glasses or could it be something else? Dear Reader, The symptoms you are describing may be alleviated by a new glasses prescription. However, it is also possible that you are developing cataracts. A cataract is simply the clouding of the normally clear lens in your eye. This is something that occurs as we age, but can also occur in younger individuals as a result of certain medications, medical conditions, injuries or a genetic predisposition. When patients develop cataracts, they often note blurred vision, halos around lights, or glare as you describe. Unfortunately, there are no medications, exercises or special glasses that will cause your cataract to disappear. If you are not inhibited by your vision, the cataract does not need to be treated in most cases. However, if the blurry vision and glare starts to impact your daily functions, such as driving or reading, it may be time to consider surgically removing the cataract.

Cataract surgery is an outpatient surgery that is performed at a hospital or ambulatory surgery center. During cataract surgery, usually a small incision is made in the eye and the cataract is broken up into smaller pieces and removed. A new clear lens is then placed in the eye to replace the natural lens that was removed. To determine if this is the cause of your symptoms, I would recommend making an appointment for a complete eye exam with your ophthalmologist. Dr. Grace Lindhorst is an Ophthalmologist; she provides patient care at the UT Physicians at Cinco Ranch medical clinic located at 23923 Cinco Ranch Blvd., Katy, TX 77494. To schedule an appointment, please call 713-486-5300.

Secret Passages of Stevie the Guide By Melanie Saxton How many of us have stepped outside our comfortable lives to tackle mission work overseas? Stephen W. Dyer is a guy who takes a baseball bat to our stained glass notions of who and what missionaries are and where they come from. His book “Secret Passages of Stevie the Guide” will absolutely rattle the cage and shake up the sleepers on the back row of any church, and even on the street outside. The book chronicles Steve’s amazing real-life ride from an explorer and storyteller who’s been around the block, down the back alley and across the ocean… for real. The Lord shaped and prepared Steve every step of the way, and now he’s sharing the remarkable and bizarre journey of how it happened, and how you can discover your own remarkable calling. A Slow Learner Steve describes himself as a slow-

learning sinner who often plays by his own rules. Biblically illiterate and rarely attending church until he was 37, he, like Jonah, ran away from the Lord. Now he’s an independently funded, faith-based missionary for the Lord Jesus Christ. How did this happen? Who would have thought? He was just an ordinary guy who spent decades exploring this planet in the oil industry and as a scuba diving and wildlife guide. He was once swallowed by the sea in the Galapagos, stricken with malaria in the Amazon Jungle, and poisoned by the Chinese. He has paid to free a slave in Africa, tangled with monkeys in Indonesia, survived a hurricane in Hawaii, begged for money in Thailand, and landed in a South American prison. His exotic and outrageous global experiences led to the discovery of his God-given mission. Today he is an adventure guide within the international mission field and mentors others with a heart to serve. He is a captivating public speaker who incorporates his unique blend of world travels, missionary service, and storytelling to encourage and motivate people off the bench and out of neutral.

Traveling the World for Jesus Christ This book is not so much about missions, as it is about how and why a guy like Steve discovered an extraordinary life in the mission field, and how we can do the same (no matter where we come from). “The collection of stories sprang from an epiphany I had after about two years serving orphanages,” says Steve. “One day in Cusco, Peru I asked myself: How did I get here and who was I fooling? How in the world did a selfish, sinful guy like me, who was also a lousy Bible student, weasel into this amazing job as a Christian Missionary in South America? How did that happen?” To answer that question, Steve first began to retrace the steps and lessons that led him to missions. He began to see a pattern of divine preparation in his life and dubbed it “The Lord’s Chess Board.” God had been running moves on him from the very beginning, and Steve realized that through his prior experiences he was ready, willing and able to produce focused and dedicated mission work. “This book follows me around the world in a series of adventures,” says Steve. He saw firsthand some awesome global geography, but also witnessed poverty, slavery and prostitution. He saw what drugs, alcohol, horrible brutality and cults have done to global societies. He also made mistakes and misjudged people and situations. “And now that I’ve been there and done it, I wrote a book to help others navigate these situations and find joy in their calling,” he adds.

Every Christian, Without Exception Steve notes that Jesus did not say, “Therefore only pastors, seminary graduates, and highly educated Bible scholars — go.” Rather, he was addressing every believing reader of the Bible. Steve believes that every Christian, without exception, is a missionary — every single one of us. He cites Matthew 28:18-20: “Then Jesus came to them and said, ‘All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” Since Jesus commanded it, this means we are all designed for it. Answering the call may not be easy, but worthwhile things seldom are. “Young or old, rich or poor, at home or far away, full time or occasionally…. everyone has a God-given mission,” says Steve. “Find it and discover an incredible and quite extraordinary life!” Dyer Family Missions Steve is a collector of antique navigation tools and weaponry, unique crosses, old photographs, rocks, seashells, pocketknives,

unusual boxes, vintage books, keys, maps, and other stuff. He admits to being a hoarder of international junk, and his wife Sheri will not argue with that. They have two daughters, Ellie and Martha Anne. Dyer Family Missions is located in Houston and focuses on the question, “What wakes people up to their God-given mission?” Steve envisions developing a “Missions Base Camp,” — a cool new kind of missionary academy and conference / retreat center with fascinating workshops and the most accomplished and forward thinking instructors of our time. He sees this as a place to develop advanced discussions, publishing, film production and mission strategy. It will also be a home for retiring missionaries, and those resting from their work.
