Isn’t it nice that for the first time I can recall, our votes for the presidential primaries actually meant something? In Texas for instance, our magazines’ endorsed candidate, Ted Cruz, won by a landslide. Overall, many of the candidates that we endorsed won, some lost, and a few others are in the run-offs that will be held in late May. In Harris County we are strongly backing Paul Simpson for Harris County Republican Chair, Lori Bartley for Congress, District 18, and Gary Gates for Railroad Commissioner. In Fort Bend County we love Ron Cohen for County Court at Law Number 5, Mike Beard for Constable Precinct 1, and Gary Gates for Railroad Commissioner. Additionally, our magazine endorsed Wayne Thompson for Fort Bend Constable, Precinct 3 in the primaries. However, since then I have gotten to know Rob Cook. I find him to be an outstanding person; a man of integrity and character, who has done a great job defending Fort Bend County. While we don’t pull our endorsement of Wayne, either man would do a wonderful job protecting the citizens of Fort Bend County. For far too long, Christians have been told they shouldn’t be involved in politics. Due to this, many have turned a blind eye to this essential establishment, refraining from voting or running for office as proud servants of God. As a result, we have filled our offices with corrupt rulers who view Christianity with contempt and suspicion, while praising the secular and ungodly. If we are to save our great nation, we must stand for what’s right. If the righteous won’t speak out for truth and justice, then who will? Joseph R. Business Owner Brings Unique Magic to His Work, Ministry By Jessa McClure A room full of children quiets as a guest speaker takes the “stage” in front of them. His enthusiastic voice carries across the crowd, and he begins his demonstration. He holds up a piece of rope that he says represents Adam. “When Adam was born, he was perfect before God,” the man explains. “As sin entered the world, we became separated from God.” He then cuts the rope into two pieces and shows the crowd. “That separation was temporarily healed by what Jesus did on the cross,” he says tying the two pieces together. “The tied knot is an example of what Christ did, bringing us back in communion with the father.” He holds up the pieces of rope that are now tied together. “Although the knot shows us that there is still

Baseball Legend Nolan Ryan Says... “When we replaced our windows with the Simonton windows, they blended with the house really well. We like the insulating factor that we get, especially in Texas, with the heat we have in the summertime and the drop in temperature that we get in the winter. The windows we had previously didn’t hold up well and didn’t do the job that we wanted from an insulating factor. Ruth chose the color, and we were really pleased with the way they turned out because we had a darker window before.”

sin in our lives, when we get to Heaven, we are made perfect,” the man says sliding his hand down the knotted rope and restoring it to its uncut state. The children are amazed at the magic that has taken place in front of their eyes, and begin ooing and ahing over the entertainer’s demonstration. “That’s a pretty straightforward magic effect, but when I add the spiritual application the children really enjoy it, and remember what they’ve learned,” said local business owner, Leonard Courtright. Courtright has been performing these Biblicallybased magic tricks since he was a child, and has used his talents to minister to children in cities both in his native Illinois and here in Texas. He believes that these fun, slide-of-hand maneuvers help children grasp concepts that might have been otherwise lost on them. “When I was a child, my parents would ask me what I learned from the church message. I did that with my own kids, and they wouldn’t remember a thing,” he said. “That’s really my goal with magic—that when parents ask their children what they learned in church, they’ll remember because it’s in their minds differently.”

All God’s Creatures Reptile Rescue

Courtright began performing his magic skills at birthday parties and other events when he was just a teenager, but really became interested in adding a Biblical message to his shows after attending a Fellowship of Christian Magicians conference in his native Chicago. “It really introduced the concept of marrying the visual with the

Biblical message,” he said. “I really enjoyed that, and have used it as a ministry tool throughout the years.” It’s Courtright’s goal to eventually perform his show as a service to small churches who don’t have the means to hire guest speakers for their children’s ministry events. “My vision is to go to these churches and do a vacation Bible school for free,” he said. “It could be here or in the Ukraine—wherever the Lord leads.” Courtright looks forward to doing extensive mission work when he retires, but for now he uses the opportunities he has as the owner

and leader of his business, Allied Siding and Windows, to further the Kingdom in his day-to-day life. “I live my life and run my business on the principles of my faith,” he said. “We pray before company meetings, we pray over meals with our salespeople, and I pray over every business decision.” Each day, before he leaves home, Courtright looks over his calendar and prays for each home that he and his salespeople will visit, and for specific wisdom over every situation. And not only does he believe that prayer is powerful in his business, but he believes what sets Allied apart from other home improvement businesses, is that they treat people the way they should be treated. “I know that’s an over-simplified phrase, but if you ask anybody at Allied, what do you do when something goes wrong, they will tell you, we make it right,” he said. “We meet over 400 homeowners a month, and things don’t always go according to plan. But we always make it right. Period.” Courtright said he wants every customer to feel as though they

were treated fairly, ethically, and with a servant’s heart. The business owner also wants others in the community to feel served as well. He accomplishes this goal through a program called Allied Cares. “Every month, we find an organization to support financially,” he said. “We have supported a number of pregnancy centers, Toys for Tots, and the ministry of man named John Downs, who is a chaplain for Harris County jails.” The business owner said in the past nine years, since he bought Allied, the company has helped more than 30 organizations in the Houston area, and hopes to do more in the coming months and years. “Not only do we do the right thing for our customers and live out our faith publicly, but we also use our finances to minister as well,” Courtright said. “As a company, we want to support all of the right kinds of things that will bring honor and glory to God.” For more information, contact Allied Windows at 713-WINDOWS or visit alliedsidingandwindows.com.

Saving the Least Among Us By Dr. Rebecca Deurlein Recently, I had an experience I just haven’t been able to shake. I accompanied a group of 52 students from Fort Bend Christian Academy on their annual trip to Costa Rica. In years past, we spent our mission time working in a fairly nice area where we painted, made repairs, and helped out wherever needed in the community. This year, however, was different. From our comfortable hotel in San Jose we boarded a bus that took us to what appeared to be a town of devastation. Our mission work for the day was at Centro Lacitos de Amor (Bows of Love), a day care center in what is considered to be the poorest town in Costa Rica, Los Guidos, on the outskirts of San Jose. Over 35,000 people – many refugees from surrounding Central American countries – live in the marginal community of Los Guidos. Their houses are put together with scrap wood and corrugated metal, and toilets sit out in the open behind steel bars that line the street but offer little protec-

tion against crime. Those who suffer the most in Los Guidos are the children, and that’s who we were there to serve. Imagine looking into the big brown eyes of a two-year-old whose future is beyond bleak. All of the children are being raised by single mothers and have little to no hope for escape from the

community or the life that entraps them. They will only be schooled through 8th grade, and that’s only if anyone cares enough to oversee their education. But that statistic is minor compared to this one: 80% of the children we worked with, ages baby to 5 years old, will be sold into sex trafficking, probably before they reach the age of 12. Just let that settle in your brain and heart for a minute. Of the 40 or so kids that were there that day, two had already been sexually abused, one at age 5, the other at age 2. Meet those kids, play soccer with them, and tuck babies into their cribs, knowing all the time exactly what’s going to happen to them, and then try coming home unchanged. Human trafficking is much easier to hide in a country such as Costa Rica, which has legalized prostitution. One in three children are sexually abused and there are few resources available to the victims. Who perpetrates these crimes? Appallingly, American tourists are the biggest offenders, as sex tourism has become a hugely profitable business in Costa Rica. They couldn’t do what they do if Americans were unwilling to shell out money to have sex with children. I can’t think of anything more disturbing – more sickening – than that. Generally, the same groups involved in sex trafficking

are also involved in drugs and arms trafficking, so the victims are limitless. As I looked around the concrete structure that houses these kids for the day, I felt the unrelenting heat, smelled the stench of acrid water and sewage, and batted away flies. I took in each young face and wished with all my heart that I could take them home, save their lives, and rescue them from a certain future of misery. I came home feeling helpless, incapable of making a difference. As a Christian, I struggled with the unfairness of it all, the fact that my children were born in America with every privilege and these children were born into poverty in a country that won’t protect them. In fact, the government will look the other way while lining its pockets off these poor children’s bodies. I shared this story with a group that makes reaching out to help others the main tenant of its existence – Sugar Land Rotary. My fellow Rotarians cringed at the suffering of this community as I asked for prayers for the children of Costa Rica. And that’s when guest speaker Mustafa Tameez, Founder and Managing Director of Outreach Strategists, shared that we don’t have to go to Costa Rica to see this horrible crime playing out. We’ve got it right here in Houston, the number one city in the U.S. for human traffick

ing. The Port of Houston and the Texas/Mexico border make it easy for women and children from Central America to be brought to the U.S. under the guise of work or marriage. They are then kept against their will in brothels hidden behind seemingly legitimate businesses, such as massage parlors and restaurants. It’s going on right under our noses, and as Christians, we have a duty to stop it. “This modern-day slave trade is an affront to modern human decency. It is the product of the worst among us,” Gov. Rick Perry said. This is why it takes the best among us to help. I urge you to get involved in any way you can to stop this most heinous of crimes. Typhoon Texas Storms the Katy Area with Faith and Fun By Jessa McClure There’s nothing quite like the feeling of jumping into the water on a hot, Texas summer day. And this year, families living in the Katy area, will have a new way to beat the heat. It’s called Typhoon Texas, and it’s a state-of-the-art waterpark that will open its doors May 28. The one-of-kind, Texas-themed park will give families in the Katy area a place to enjoy the sights and sounds unique to Texas, cool off with thrilling water rides, and provide a place for families to enjoy some family fun. “The owners really wanted to open a family attraction in the Katy area, but weren’t sure where to build,” said church groups sales manager for the company, Antoinette Chew. “They originally looked further out of town, but kept coming back to this site in Katy because they felt like there was such a need with all of the families in Katy.” Construction began on the park within a few months, and now the park is ready to thrill and entertain hundreds of area kids and

their families with 30 slides and other water-themed attractions. Some of the attractions to check out: The Bullchute – one of the most thrill-seeking ride at the park. Patrons enter a launch capsule, and when the floor drops, the capsule is pushed through a loop and drops nearly six stories.

Former Rice University Admissions Officer to Lecture on Ways to Slash College Costs Workshop is free – but fills up quickly… Katy, TX - An extremely popular lecture is being held again this year at Cinco Ranch Library for the parents of high school sophomores and juniors. The workshop, which is being offered without cost to attendees, will focus on little-known ways of getting grants and scholarships for college, regardless of GPA or how much money a family earns. The class will cover topics such as how to double or triple eligibility for scholarships (even if a family makes too much money to qualify for financial aid), the secret to attending a private college or university for less than the

price of a state school and the single biggest mistake that 9 out of 10 parents make when trying to figure out how to fund their child’s college education. This class is free and registration is required. Tickets are available on a “first-come, first-served” basis. Space is limited by the size of the room. It is being held at the Cinco Ranch Library located at 2620 Commercial Center Blvd., in Katy, on Thursday, August 20th from 7:00 to 8:30pm. The library is across the street from Cinco Ranch High School about one block from Grand Parkway/Hwy 99. Kurt Goedecke, ChFC, is teaching

the workshop. Mr. Goedecke is the former Assistant Director of Admissions at Rice University and a nationally recognized expert on college planning. A word to the wise – don’t wait to register. Past events have filled up quickly. To reserve a seat go to www.CollegeMoneyForTexans.org.

The Texas Twister – this six-person water raft ride sends patrons through a serpentine splash zone, before dropping the raft into a Texas-sized boomerang wall.

The Snake Pit – These two-rider tube slides twist and turn like a west Texas Rattler. Slide Boarding – this is a video game and water slide all in one. Use your board controller to shoot at targets as you’re speeding down the slide. The Gully Washer – an area designed specifically for kids aged five to 12. It has spray areas, slides and rope bridges perfect for cooling off and having fun. Bucaroo Bayou – this area, complete with mini slides and a splash pad, are geared towards the youngest Typhooners. The Lazy-T – this lazy river stretches across the entire park and is the length of five football fields. Its design is meant to give park patrons the feel of floating down the Guadalupe River in the heart of hill country.

Lone Star Racers – this is a head-first race against friends, through a winding loop with a wet and wild finish.

Authentic Peruvian Food!

“Some of the owners like to vacation in the Hill Country, so they really wanted to have that hill country feel, especially when you’re going down the lazy river,” Chew said.

This Texas river feel also comes through in the park’s landscaping. “[We] have put a lot of time and money into the landscape,” Chew said. “It’s not like the typical waterpark where you go in and it’s a lot of concrete. You’re going to see a lot of plants and greenery native to Texas. It’s going to feel like you’re on vacation.” Another aspect of the new park that sets it apart from others like it is the state-of-the-art water filtration system that turns the water completely around every two hours.

“There are only a handful of waterparks in the country that have this type of system,” Chew said. “The owners have put a lot of attention into the cleanliness of the park, and have made sure that everything is very clean for our guests.” And patrons will not only have clean facilities and attractions to enjoy, but also the park’s theme nights and faith-integrated events like the faith and family night on June 8 from 6 to 9 p.m., and a youth lock-in on June 10. “The lock-in is for youth and their pastors, and will be from 10:30 p.m. to 6:30 a.m.,” she said. “We’re going to have guest speakers from the NBA, the NFL, and performances by several bands.” NGEN Radio, a Christian rock and hip-hop station, will be emceeing the event along with the group Can You Hear Me Now. Along with lock-ins, the park can also be rented out for VBS kick-offs, church family days, and even Sunday services. “We already have the stage and AV equipment for their bands to come in and hook up, and the pastor can come in and preach from the park,” Chew said. “This can be a great way to encourage families to come to services in the summer when attendance is generally lower.” For more information about Typhoon Texas and how your family or church group can enjoy the waterpark, contact Antoinette Chew at Antoinette.chew@typhoontexas.com or (832) 942-8869.

1. Ask your kids how their note-taking is going. Many kids slack off as the end of the year approaches and need a reminder to take the same quality notes they took at the start of the school year. If their notes at the start of the year were thorough and extensive, and their notes now mostly consist of doodles and single words with little meaning, they will need a nudge back down the scholastic path. Point out the difference and remind them that how they end is even more important than how they started. *Note: If your kids are fond of taking pictures of teacher’s notes on the whiteboard, I urge you to discourage them from this practice. It is a proven fact that writing something down contributes to memory retention; taking a picture of it does not. 2. Make sure they get their sleep. After daylight savings time, and as the days get longer, kids are tempted to stay up later and skimp on their zzzz’s. Encourage them to hit the sack at a decent time, at least

until their last final has been put to bed. *Note: Cell phones are the primary culprit when it comes to late and restless nights. Insist your kids charge up in a different room with everything set to silent. Otherwise, the buzzes and beeps – not to mention their obsessive need to respond to them – will keep them up all night.

3. Don’t be afraid to contact teachers. Kids tend to think that you are over school as much as they are (and you may be, but they don’t need to know that). Show them that you’re still paying attention by staying involved in their progress. Teachers are your allies and when you work with them, you’ll see positive results in your kids’ success. 4. Encourage organization, especially when it comes to major projects and tests. What can they do today that will make tomorrow a little easier? *Note: The ubiquitous cell phone is the perfect place for kids to store due dates and scheduled activities. They can customize their calendars to send reminders, so there’s no excuse for forgetting. 5. Keep your kids in school. Teachers see a significant increase in absences during this time of year, and many are unwarranted. Stress to your kids the importance of being in class every day and staying focused on their number one job.

can just be time to sit and watch their favorite TV program or eat their favorite dinner. 9. Stress mind over matter. Remind your kids that when they have prepared as best as they can, they should take a deep breath and go into their tests with confidence. Mind over matter is significant in determining testing outcomes, so it’s important that they maintain a can-do attitude. 10. Always encourage balance. Studies show that taking work breaks rejuvenates the mind and helps us to work better and more efficiently. Make sure your kids are getting exercise and fresh air and socializing with friends and family. These pursuits are arguably crucial to overall well-being. Dr. Rebecca Deurlein is the author of Teenagers 101: What a top teacher wishes you knew about helping your kid succeed (Amazon, Barnes & Noble). 6. Offer to help your kids by quizzing them and guiding them through test preparation. Whether or not they accept your help is really secondary to the fact that you offered. When parents show an interest in their kids’ studies, it positively impacts kids. 7. Make sure your children are well fed on testing days. Protein, grapes, blueberries, and other “brain foods” really do impact students’ abilities to focus and maintain energy. Breakfast IS important! 8. Reward your kids when they do well or after they have completed a tough study or testing session. It doesn’t have to be monetary; it

Pharmacist Brings Hope to Patients with New Medical Technology By Jessa McClure Artist Lisa Tenney dabs at a bright blue glob of paint, filling her paintbrush with color. Her hand then moves to the canvas where she brings her vision to life. Three years ago, Tenney’s canvas was empty and her paintbrushes dry. She had been diagnosed with a form of lymphoma that left her with little energy to carry out daily tasks, let alone the stamina to paint. “I had been on a painting sabbatical for a year because I didn’t have the strength to carry out the rest of life’s demands and still paint,” she said. “I felt like life as I had known it was over.” But a week after being diagnosed, she got a call from a high school friend, Dr. Ferryl Boyance D. Ph, R. Ph, who was working on a new form of alternative medical evaluation and remedy. “She offered to introduce me to what she was doing and I was open to trying it,” Tenney said. “I didn’t have any grand hopes for a miracle cure.” The method includes what Boyance calls a bioenergetic evaluation that uses the patient’s acupressure points to provide data about

what is happening inside the patient’s body that cannot be seen by simple explanation of symptoms. “The machine measures the electricity flowing through the body,” she said. “And once we can see which organs aren’t functioning correctly, we can try to remedy those issues.” After the scan is complete, patients will receive a report that shows what parts of their body are suffering. But, not only does the evaluation show the problem, it also provides a solution. “It’ll show what you’re missing and identify the herbal corrective or pharmaceutical path that will help to alleviate these issues,” Boyance said.

Unique Pharmacist Only take medicine that is helping you Every person has a unique DNA, biochemical and electrical form. Bioenergetic screening electrically finds the problem, the cause but most importantly the solution. I believe for every physical challenge there is a road to wellness and we will strive to find that path with you.

Once the problem has been identified, Dr. Boyance, then uses the machine to encode radio waves into a water-based solution that can help replenish nutrients and treat the patient’s medical issues. “The water acts like a CD or floppy drive,” she said. “Signals are emitted into the water and then you take 10 drops, three times a day. Every time you take those drops it downloads the information into your body.” Boyance knows that this new method sounds far-fetched, but she believes that bioenergetic evaluations are the future of medicine. “It’s not like drugs where you have to let it dissolve in your stomach and then it has to be absorbed into the blood stream and get to the organ before it can help. It’s immediate,” she said. “That’s what got me into it. It works faster than any other pharmaceutical, herbal or homeopathic treatment.” Although she offers evaluation and remedy services from her home right now, her hope is to one day use this technology in a pharmacy setting where pharmacists can use scans as a form of preventative medicine. “When the doctor sees you, they can only see what you tell them,” Boyance said. “If you forget to say that your knee hurts or that sometimes your side hurts, the doctor won’t get that information. But the machine forgets nothing, and can scan your whole body. If it shows your pancreas is weak, then we’re not going to wait for you to become a diabetic to remedy that condition.” She hopes that having patients come in for scans even when they’re not feeling sick will help give doctors and other medical professionals something to compare to when the patient is sick. “Seventy or 80 percent of my patients come in because they don’t feel good or have pain,” she said. “I say, once we get you out of

the pain, please come back every year so we can have a baseline.” Although Boyance believes wholeheartedly in this new form of detection and correction, she also knows that God is in control of each patient’s journey. “I am 100 percent positive that there is so much grace out there that there is nothing physically that God cannot overcome,” she said. She also believes that when a patient is feeling better physically, they have the strength to deal with other emotional or spiritual issues that might arise. “My hope is to be a blessing and make my patients’ bodies as strong as possible,” she said. The doctor and her alternative medical evaluation and solutions have already been a blessing to Tenney, who has returned to her painting passions. “I am finally able to do art again, and this spring I’m starting to teach classes in my home studio,” she said. “I would recommend Dr. Boyance’s treatments to anyone. Not only did they give me my life back, but working with [Boyance] was great. She is one of the most giving, selfless people I know.” Dr. Ferryl Boyance D.Ph, R.Ph graduated from the University of Houston College of Pharmacy, 1987. She is proud to be a second generation pharmacist and has 30 years of experience in pharmacy. Dr. Boyance entered the world of bioenergetic evaluations in 1999 and is the only pharmacist on the continent with this specialty. With over 17 years of successful bioenergetic evaluations and outcomes, she is considered an expert in this fast emerging field of science. Bioenergetics matches your body electrically with the best pharmaceutical, herbal, and vitamin solutions so you can choose your path to wellness. She is available for group lectures as well as individual bioenergetic evaluations and solutions. Please contact her at 832.628.6894 or ferrylboyance@icloud.com or www.uniquepharmacist.com

Dear Doctor: I Have Some Questions About Hypothyroidism By Dr. Sayeeda Bilkis, M.D. 1. What is hypothyroidism? The thyroid gland is a butterfly-shaped endocrine gland that is normally located in the lower front of the neck. It makes thyroid hormone. Hypothyroidism means that the thyroid gland can’t make enough thyroid hormone. Common causes are autoimmune disease, surgical removal of the thyroid, and radiation treatment. 2. How is hypothyroidism treated? It can be treated by thyroxine (T4) replacement. Synthetic thyroxine pills contain hormone exactly like the T4 that the thyroid gland makes. 3. What about “Natural” thyroid hormones? Desiccated (dried and powdered) animal thyroid (Armour Thyroid), mainly obtained from pigs, was

even desiccated thyroid pills have chemicals (binders) in them to hold the pill together, so they are not completely “natural”. There is no evidence that desiccated thyroid has any advantage over synthetic T4.

the most common form of thyroid hormone therapy before the individual active thyroid hormones were discovered. While desiccated thyroid contains both T4 and T3, the balance of T4 and T3 in animals is not the same as in humans, so the hormones in animal thyroid pills aren’t necessarily “natural” for the human body. Further, the amounts of both T4 and T3 can vary in every batch of the desiccated thyroid, making it harder to keep blood levels right. Finally,

4. Will thyroid hormone help me if I have hypothyroid symptoms but normal thyroid hormone levels? Several scientific studies have looked at whether T4 therapy would be of benefit to patients with symptoms that overlap with hypothyroid symptoms and normal thyroid function. In all cases, there was no difference between T4 and a placebo (sugar pill) in improving symptoms or well-being. Summertime at the YMCA is a time for sun and fun. Overnight, day or specialty camps at the Y share one thing: they’re about discovery. Kids have the opportunity to explore nature, find new talents, try new activities, gain independence, and make lasting friendships and memories. And, of course, it’s fun too. At the Y, there’s a camp for everyone. Y day camps help kids grow and have fun through exploring the outdoors, building self-confidence and independence, learning core values, developing life skills and - most importantly - being active. Each week, imaginative themes and activities such as swimming, field trips, arts & crafts, group games, sports and recreation provide an engaging atmosphere for hands-on learning and exploration. Katy Family YMCA Day Camp is held at Camp Cinco, a 220-acre camp complete with a zip line, ropes course, rock wall, sports fields, covered basketball pavilion, misting station, nature trails, ranch house and more. Drop off as early as 7 am and pick up as late as 6:30 pm. Nestled among the tall pines on 530 acres along the shores of Lake Livingston, as the Y’s official overnight summer camp, YMCA Camp Cullen offers boys and girls ages 7-17 the experience of a lifetime. Campers take part in a wide range of activities including water sports, horseback riding, a ropes course, nature exploration, drama and so much more. In addition to the many fun activities available, the campers also gather as a cabin group each day where they play, learn and bond together while participating in fun activities like campfires and scavenger hunts. Camp Cullen is located just one and a half hours north of Houston.

At YMCA Specialty Camp, your child can pick from several activities that they can focus on for the entire session. Classes include, but aren’t limited to, sports, cheerleading, dance, jump rope and toddler fitness camp. To learn more about Y summer camps or to register, visit ymcahouston.org or contact the Katy Family YMCA at 281-392-5055.

Epiphany of the Lord Launches Campaign to Build First Catholic Elementary and Middle School in Katy By Sara G. Stephens Katy, TX - Epiphany of the Lord Catholic Community has announced the public phase of its Faith in Our Future…Investing in Catholic Education Capital Campaign. This major fundraising effort is designed to acquire the funding needed to build a Catholic school on the parish campus located at 1530 Norwalk Drive in Katy. The school would be the first Catholic elementary and middle school in Katy. “We are excited to begin the public phase of our campaign,” said the Rev. Thomas Lam, pastor at Epiphany of the Lord Catholic Community. “We are thrilled to accept this opportunity to invest in the future of our most valued resource, our children. As Catholics, we are called to build God’s kingdom, to teach others who God is, and spread the Gospel message. For our parish, this is the next step in fulfilling that directive.” Plans call for a new school featuring two classrooms for grades Pre-K-8 with a capacity of 550 students. The $12 million project cost covers the construction of the new school. In addition, the project seeks to expand and relocate the parish’s Outreach Program which serves the community through a wide variety of social outreach activities, including the parish’s St. Vincent de Paul facility. “The value of a Catholic education is priceless,” said Denny Dellinger, campaign co-general chair. “It is an education based upon our Catholic morals and values, designed to build a strong foundation academically and socially. It is an education that offers a child a chance at a successful future and we are grateful to be associated with this exciting project.” Epiphany Campaign Underway So far, more than $2.7 million in gifts and pledges have been received from 162 families. The parish will continue inviting families

to make leadership gifts throughout the duration of the active fundraising for the campaign which will run through May of this year. “I am thankful for the response we have received thus far,” Fr. Lam said. “The sacrifice of our families in the silent phase has placed us in position to realize our goals, but I am encouraging, and humbly asking, everyone in our parish family to make a commitment. If this school is to become a reality, we need everyone to identify their sacrificial commitment. I firmly believe this school will help build a stronger community for all our families at Epiphany.” The pledge collection phase of the three-year capital campaign runs through May 2019 with preliminary plans for the school opening scheduled for September 2018. Established in 1981, Epiphany of the Lord Catholic Community is a member of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston. The parish serves more than 6,000 households, and the Katy community through a wide variety of social outreach, ministries and faith formation programs from early childhood through adult.

Ronnie Norman: Missionally-minded Pastor Brings Hope to Community, Overseas By Jessa McClure As children gather to hear stories and play with church volunteers, Pastor Ronnie Norman of First Colony Church of Christ Sugar Land, talks with a group of men and women, getting to know them and inquiring about how the church can meet their needs. This ministry, which focuses on the Four Corners community in Fort Bend County, is just one of the ways Pastor Norman leads his church to make a difference in the world. He takes the Lord seriously when he says in Matthew 28:19, “go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit.” The pastor encourages all of his nearly 2000 parishioners to be “on mission” in their daily lives, and enlists their help to provide prayer, donations and man power to bring hope to those who are less fortunate in the community and abroad. “We have a strong missions presence in Honduras, Haiti and

Uganda,” he said. “We have started over 20 churches in Uganda and we go on many short-term mission trips annually, both foreign and domestic. The church also spends much of their time and effort assisting and ministering those living in the under-resourced area of Four Corners in Fort Bend. “We do tutoring and community cleanups there as well as providing school supplies for students and gift cards for teachers in an elementary school.” Norman founded First Colony Church of Christ in 1985, and has been the pastor ever since. At that time, the pastor and a few core members wrote out a mission statement that said the church would “exist to honor God and lead people into a growing relationship with Him.” “I love our mission and I’m as committed to it now as I was 30 years ago when we started,” he said. The church also has a set of objectives that help guide not only the pastor, but those in leadership and those who attend regularly.

“We aim to gather in larger groups for praise and in smaller groups to connect. We aim to grow as lifelong, enthusiastic disciples of Jesus Christ through bible knowledge, prayer and generosity,” he said. “We also aim to go, making a difference for Jesus Christ at home, in the church, in our community and beyond.” Norman has built his church from the ground up, and has relied heavily on his Christian upbringing in Columbia, TN and his experiences ministering to people in Lakeland, FL area from 1981 to 1985. “I love my church family at the First Colony Church of Christ and would attend there even if I were not on staff,” he said. Norman and the rest of his church are working to add to the family with the addition of three multi-site campuses in the next 36 months. “We just launched our first multi-site campus in Richmond on September 13 and that is going beautifully,” Norman said. When the pastor isn’t launching new church sites or helping to administer school supplies to children in under-served areas of the community, he enjoys spending time with his wife Martha of 35 years, their two children and five grandchildren.

“One of our treasured blessings is that our children and grandchildren live nearby and are active players in our church family,” he said. “I’m a blessed guy.” If he’s not preaching a sermon at the First Colony campus at 2140 First Colony Boulevard, Sugar Land, TX, he is riding through town on his motorcycle or playing what he calls “woeful golf.”

Child Evangelism Fellowship®: Sharing God’s Burden By Lydia Hardesty For 79 years Child Evangelism Fellowship® (CEF®) has been used of the Lord to bring children to Himself. Founder Jesse Irving Overholtzer had a deep burden to reach children across the globe with the Gospel of Jesus Christ. He said, “I’m very burdened that people evangelize the children, not because we say so, but because it is commanded in the Word of God.” This same burden has been passed down from generation to generation of CEF workers and volunteers who continue the work of bringing the Good News of Jesus Christ to “Every Child, Every Nation, Every Day.” In the past few years, CEF has seen record-breaking growth. In 2014, 19.9 million children around the world heard a face-to-face presentation of the Gospel from a trained CEF worker or volunteer. That’s a phenomenal 28 percent growth from 2013! But behind all these numbers and statistics are real-life children whose lives are being transformed by

the Gospel. One of the outreach programs for which CEF is best known is the Good News Club.® During the school year, children gather in

Even when schools let out for the summer, CEF ministry continues. There are many programs CEF provides in the summer months, but the primary summertime activity is 5-Day Club®. These summer Bible clubs have been described as “VBS on-the-road.” They are taught anywhere convenient for children —backyards, parks, community centers, apartment complexes and the list goes on. One a week for six consecutive weeks, children gather to hear Bible lessons and a missionary story taught by screened and trained CEF workers and volunteers, many of whom are older teenagers, who serve as mentors and examples to the younger children. The kids enjoy exciting games and high-energy activities, but most importantly, they hear the Gospel of Jesus Christ each day. Every summer tens of thousands of children worldwide hear the Gospel because of the ministry of 5-Day Club. In an effort to provide an alternative to the increasingly commercialized and materialistic nature of Christmas, CEF launched a brand new program in 2015 called Christmas Across America.TM The holiday season commenced very early for CEF local directors and teacher trainers, as they worked to facilitate training sessions for the many volunteers who gave their time to tell children the true meaning of Christmas. In November and December, children all around the country were invited to attend “Ultimate Christmas Parties.” They played games, made crafts, ate snacks and heard the true meaning of Christmas. Ultimate Christmas Parties were held in all kinds of locations—daycares, women’s shelters, restaurants, hospitals, ice cream parlors and even a carwash! Andrew Murray, a full-time CEF worker in Colorado said, “One of our church partners here in Greater Denver had a testimony from

With their parent’s permission, children participate in Bible lessons, songs, memory verses, games and activities, and are presented with the Gospel. They are introduced to exciting accounts of real-life missionaries, and are encouraged to have a daily time of personal reflection and Bible reading, with helpful take-home sheets and Wonder Devotional Books®. Every time Good News Club meets, children hear the amazing truths of God’s love and Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross, and are encouraged in the development of their whole person – body, mind, and spirit. Jhovany is an example of one of the many lives that has been transformed because of Good News Club. He has faithfully attended the weekly club in his public school since fourth grade. His favorite part of Good News Club is singing because “it’s fun and we dance around.” But more importantly, Jhovany learned “that God died for our sins… [Good News Club] helped me learn how God is our Helper, [and] our Savior.” Even though Jhovany is now in middle school, he comes back to his Good News Club every week as a helper. When asked why other children should come to Good News Club, Jhovany responded, “So you can learn about God!” Thousands of children like Jhovany are being reached with the Gospel in their public schools through the ministry of CEF.

season. Hundreds of thousands more were reached worldwide through this Christmas campaign, which quickly spread from Christmas Across America to Christmas around the world! God has richly blessed the work of Child Evangelism Fellowship in its 79 years of outreach. What has made CEF so successful? It could be because of the teachers. Maybe it’s because of the children. Or maybe it’s because CEF shares in the Lord’s burden, that “it is not the will of my Father who is in heaven that one of these little ones should perish” (Matthew 18:14).

their Christmas Across America party: 105 children in attendance, 6 babies, 48 parents and other adult guests, and 41 church volunteers—in all, 200 people at the party! There were two new decisions made to believe in Christ. The pastor said, ‘This was the best Wednesday night in my 20-some year history with the church!’” Because of Christmas Across America, over 64,000 children in the United States were reached with the Gospel this Christmas
