What a whirlwind these last few weeks have been. Scotty McCreery came to town during the Katy Crawfish Festival. This 19-year-old music sensation and American Idol winner is a fellow Christian, and we enjoyed the special surprise he had in store for one of our readers. You’ll have to read ahead for that one! We featured local author Angela Lubbe and her heartwarming children’s books that help families blend and cope after divorce. We also shared the background of Les Miserables, the movie that sparked a torrent of tissue as we cried through the musical scenes. Speaking of music, we interviewed Worship Pastor John Cordes of Fellowship of Cinco Ranch. This father of three is adopting a 16-month-old son from Ethiopia and shares information about his band, as well as the energy it takes to lead a congregation. The word “energy” is a perfect segue to Jump & Joy, a local business that brings smiles to children’s parties and business events. We enjoy bringing ethical businesses to your attention, including Jay Moyer of State Farm. He shares the many reasons we all need to protect our hard-earned assets and is our Christian business profile for this edition. We also shared a topical feature on Internet behavior and how employment prescreening may hinge on what industrial psychologists uncover in your social media. This is an especially good piece for parents and their youth, who are prone to indiscretions and may be turned down for employment because of it. We also embrace the mothers in our lives. I was surprised to be mentioned, but having lost my wife some years ago and raising my two sons and two daughters by myself, it was nice to read the commentary. I guess I am the default mother in my children’s lives, and I think you will appreciate the poem attached to the piece—very poignant. Last, we say goodbye to one of our columnists, Mark Williamson, who passed away suddenly and leaves a void in our magazine. Mark was a feisty, “tell it like it is” servant of the Lord. We miss him already and send prayers to his beloved family. Much more lies between the pages, including our Dear Doctor column and community news.

May You Be Richly Blessed, Joseph R. Menslage

Scotty McCreery Visits Katy By Ruth Towns In a world full of secular music, it’s nice when a Christian artist emerges and captures our hearts. Scotty McCreery is one such performer and made an appearance at the Katy Crawfish festival in March, a treat for fans of country western music. Scotty is known to wear a cross, which he did during Season 10 of American Idol (he won with a history-making 122+ million fan votes). He is not ashamed of his faith and also wears an “I AM SECOND” bracelet on his wrist. He was the youngest male Idol winner at just 17. God further blessed him when Clear as Day became a certified platinum debut album in the U.S. Trivia and Testimony Fans may already know a lot about Scotty. But those new to his life and music can study this short list of information: Birth Name: Scott Cooke McCreery (he introduced himself as Scott in the American Idol auditions) Birth Date: October 09, 1993 Birth Place: Garner, North Carolina Website: scottymccreery.com

Discography: Clear as Day (Platinum album with over one million sold) and Christmas with Scotty McCreery (Gold with over 300,000 sold). Trivia: Scotty is interested in commercial spaceflight. If it’s ever possible, he may just launch into orbit one day. Scotty’s followers have heard of his passion for baseball. He played as a pitcher for his high school team in Garner, North Carolina, but set baseball aside to audition for American Idol. He still plays when he can, but his current tour, “Weekend Roadtrip,” monopolizes much of his time and energy. He traveled about 200 days out of last year and will probably do the same this year. Now 19, the question becomes: “What anchors this young man as he navigates the music industry?” Well, Scotty has a trusty tour manager and a supportive family. Mom Judy, dad Michael and sister Ashley are his biggest fans. Interestingly, Scotty’s father is half Puerto Rican, making Scotty one quarter Puerto Rican. He is Southern Baptist and was saved at the age of 12, crediting God for the acclaim and limelight. Touring the country isn’t his only responsibility. Scotty juggles a full load of college coursework and performs on weekends. He’s young, healthy and has the energy to wear many hats, and is focusing on a degree in communications (he’s a freshman). But the big goal is to pursue his career in music.

Fanfare! People drove in from far and wide to see Scotty perform in Katy, and the social forums buzzed with anticipation and feedback. In a dream come true, special arrangements were made for one well-known Katyite to meet Scotty aboard his tour bus. Kendall Bumbera was surprised as she met with Scotty and talked with him for close to an hour. It turns out that Kendall and Scotty share a lot in common, including their faith, pursuing careers at a young age, and fitting in college. And both drive trucks (Scotty named his Loretta). Many readers of Katy Christian Magazine are familiar with the Bumbera family. This NASCAR dynasty includes Cheri and Kenny Bumbera and their children Kristin, Kendall and Boyd, who are also race car drivers. Bumbera’s Performance Associates is a local Christian Katy business.

The Blessing of “Blending” By Ruth Towns

With a wealth of first-hand experiences, Lubbe began writing children’s books. The goal? To let her young readers know they are special and “belong” in their families. How We Blend

Have you heard of local author Angela Lubbe? As a member of a “blended” family, her first instinct was to write books for parents and step-parents. But her focus changed as her heart was drawn to children of divorce and the many challenges they face. She experienced this personally as a teenaged stepdaughter, and then later when she witnessed the “flip side” as a stepmother. Writing for Children of Divorce Many families are blended, and they are not alone. As stepchildren (and stepparents) navigate a new family dynamic, they often need encouragement . After all, new situations can be turbulent, emotional, confusing and even scary. Children may wonder where they fit in and need as many coping skills as possible.

You very likely know someone who is a part of a blended family. With the divorce rate continuing to rise, more and more families are “blending”—meaning they form new units with two married adults and their children from a previous marriage or relationship. “Parents face many challenges when entering into a blended family. This is also true for children and is the reason for my books,” says Lubbe

“In my previous marriage I experienced medical issues. It just was not in God’s plan for me to have children and our lives went into two different directions,” says Lubbe. “Then I met Greg on Match.com and we could not be better suited. It is almost like we are the male and female versions of the same person.” A marriage to Greg came with two extra bonuses: two amazing children whom Lubbe loves as if they were her own. “I truly believe this is God’s plan for me, and sharing my stories with children and their parents is a part of it.” Lubbe’s blended family encounters challenges with schedules, appointments, birthdays, holidays, money, schoolwork, and discipline— all while trying to insulate the kids from all of it. “But often they see and feel these challenges. My books take children through these situations and lets them know how to handle them in the wisest way,” says Lubbe. Don’t Forget About Us “Blending” families is a process and a transition. During this critical time it is important to consistently tell children they are loved, especially because they are often worried and may wonder if “all this” is happening because of them. Don’t Forget About Us (available on Amazon.com) was published May 2012 and helps parents or family members explain to the children that they will not be forgotten. It also helps parents communicate that they have not stopped loving their children. This is a series of many books to come that will cover an abundance of blended family situations.

I’m With Mom Today Imagine stepping into the shoes of a little girl who is confused about what day it is and which parent she is supposed to listen to. Millions of children face this scenario—how are they supposed to act, do and say as they juggle multiple parents? Lubbe’s second book addresses the profound needs of children, their insecurities, and the importance of reassurance. Lubbe is working with Lucid Books to publish I’m With Mom Today early this summer. The book is illustrated by Melanie Smith who is also local to Katy. About the Author Lubbe currently lives in Katy with her husband and two amazing stepchildren. She has a BS in Business, Informations Systems and has worked full time in software development for over 13 years. However, she always finds time to write her books and enjoys spending time with family and friends. She loves being outdoors, attends Creekside Community church, and volunteers in the community. Her writing is meant to be a blessing to families of all shapes and sizes. In the back of both books you will find a helpful Parents Page with the moral of the story. This gives important insights to parents, grandparents and relatives as they ponder the best way to handle situations. Connect with her at blendedbooks.com and facebook.com/BlendedBooks.

Dear Doctor: Understanding Staph By Dr. Thomas Murphy UT Physicians at Cinco Ranch No one wants to be stricken with an infection, especially a staph infection. In our ongoing “Dear Doctor” series, Dr. Thomas Murphy weighs in. Dr. Murphy is the Assistant Dean, Medical School, UT Health and Chief Medical Officer UT Physician community based clinics. Dear Doctor: What is staph? Dear Patient: Twenty-five percent of healthy people carry Staphylococcus, or staph. It is a bacterium that can be found in the mouth, nose, or genital area. Staph becomes an issue when a cut, scrape, or other wound is infected with staph. These infections are usually treated with antibiotics. However, some of these can be very serious and even affect the bloodstream, resisting medications. Those with weakened immune systems or diabetes are at risk for developing one type of staph infection known as cellulitis, which affects deeper layers of the skin. Boils and unusual swelling of the skin should be taken seriously, especially any that accompany fever. Keeping wounds covered and clean will help prevent infection and spread of staph.

As a precaution, consult a doctor when in doubt and especially when symptoms appear. For information or to schedule an appointment with a doctor at UT Physicians Cinco Ranch call 713-486-5300 or visit UTPhysicians. com/cinco-ranch/.

“Justing” God By Dr. K Lynn Lewis

your behalf. He has orchestrated entire sequences of events in your life for His glory and for your benefit. He is on His throne and around Him expectant legions of angels, saints, and all creation await His command.

“To whom will you compare me? Or who is my equal?” says the Holy One. So, imagine you have a meeting with the Creator and Sustainer of the Universe. He designed and implemented everything natural and supernatural that you know and understand, and everything you don’t. There is nothing that exists that is not within His dominion. He knows the name, path and current position of every asteroid, star, planet, and galaxy in the universe, the soul of every child ever conceived, and, for His own accounting purposes, the number of every hair ever on the head of everyone who has ever existed. Yes, apparently somewhere in heaven are lists of every hair on every head, notations of every sparrow that ever lived and died, and detailed accounts of our every deed or misdeed. God is intricately detailed, amazingly complex, infinitely comprehensive, and extremely powerful. Now you are standing in His Presence. He loves you, wants His best for you, and has created angels as ministering servants on

With this in mind, you open your mouth to speak. The Lord God Almighty fixes His gaze on you, gives you His attention, and hears what you have to say in this, your moment before the King. “Lord, I just... “ you begin. “Father, we just... “ you continue, while tossing in some more “Father, I justs” and “God, we justs” along your verbose way. Then, you summarize, “God, I just... “ and end with a closing “Father, I just... Amen.”

For the last 50 years at Tradition Bank, we’ve known that community service and support for local businesses and organizations matter. We’re proud to work in a community where so many others do too.

This scene is comparable to the person puttering around in a finely tuned 980 horsepower Formula One racing machine like they were driving a common golf cart. In Luke 18:35-43 a blind beggar cried out to Jesus, “What do you want me to do for you?” He did not say, “Lord, I just want to thank you for visiting today” or “Lord, I was just wondering if you would autograph my beggar’s cup” or “Lord, I just wish... “ No, in faith he told Jesus—explicitly and succinctly—exactly what he wanted, and his request was granted. Like others we read about in the Gospel accounts, the man was bold AND believing. Likewise, when we pray we should imagine ourselves standing in the Presence of the Lord, for we are. We are speaking with Him face to face. Our verbiage should be rooted in faith, limited in pronouns, and devoid of “justs.” Perhaps we imagine God is too busy to care, too distant to dare, or too superior to share our concerns. We think to ourselves that we don’t want to bother the Lord with our trivialities or burden Him with our travails, and yet we waste holy time discounting Him with “justs” and irritatingly repeating personal pronouns as if He is not physically or spiritually present in our conversation. Rather, should we not approach the Lord with godly fear, confident faith, concise conversation, and hopeful expectation? “Do you not know? Have you not heard? Has it not been told you from the beginning? Have you not understood since the earth was

founded? He sits enthroned above the circle of the earth, and its people are like grasshoppers. He stretches out the heavens like a canopy, and spreads them out like a tent to live in. He brings princes to naught and reduces the rulers of this world to nothing. No sooner are they planted, no sooner are they sown, no sooner do they take root in the ground, than he blows on them and they wither, and a whirlwind sweeps them away like chaff. ‘To whom will you compare me? Or who is my equal?’ says the Holy One. Lift up your eyes and look to the heavens: Who created all these? He who brings out the starry host one by one and calls forth each of them by name. Because of his great power and mighty strength, not one of them is missing.” (Isaiah 40:21-26) Jesus encouraged His disciples to “Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened” (Matthew 7:7) and the writer of Hebrews asserts, “Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.” (Hebrews 4:16) Yes, it is a great privilege to pray, to have an audience with the Lord, and such opportunities should not be squandered. Therefore, let us not “just” God, but trust God, boldly approach His throne, and speak to Him in all of our prayers as if speaking to Him personally, face to face, intimately, in all of His power and glory. Covenant Preparatory Christian Academy A University-Model School By Karri Fieglein Director, Covenant Preparatory Christian Academy A growing movement in school choice is the University-Model school. Described by Focus on the Family as “an intentional home school/private school blend that specifically assigns education curriculum to both the home and classroom, the [university-model] approach is intended to create a college-like setting that uses both self-study and classroom instruction.” This unique educational choice has arrived in Katy, Texas at Covenant Preparatory Christian Academy. Affiliated with the National Association of University Model Schools, CPCA was founded in 2012 by local resident, Karri Fieglein, when she felt the desire for her own children to experience the benefit of a Christ-centered school community while still protecting the time her family valued together in the home. The result was the formation of a school that would accomplish both of those purposes. At the foundation of Covenant Prep was a desire to produce wholesome, competent men and women of character who make a positive impact for Christ in the next generation, as well as the belief that the strength of the family unit is the first and primary social and educational ministry that God has given.

April / May 2013

CPCA functions as a partnership between teachers, students and their parents that provides a challenging, college-preparatory education within a supportive and encouraging community. By meeting one, two or three days per week depending upon the needs of the student, parents retain their key role in their child’s education as they work cooperatively with the school to impart biblical faith and

values. CPCA embraces an approach that demonstrates that a highquality education can be provided in a manner that protects and even enhances the role of parents in the discipleship of their children. With opportunities for leadership, character development, servanthood and encouraging relationships, students grow in a nourishing environment that supports the family and appreciates each individual’s gifts, skills and talents created uniquely for God’s purpose.

find themselves in a spiritual crisis when they step onto the college campus or enter the workplace where faith in Jesus Christ is deeply challenged by the world, Covenant Prep is committed to intentional biblical worldview instruction for its students. In the words of Dr. Francis Shaffer: “We should be consciously preparing the next generation for the new battles it will face.” If you’d like more information about CPCA and their programs for students K-12, visit their website at www.covenantprepkaty.org. Or, come to an informational meeting on the first Thursday of each month at The Church of The Holy Apostles.

Also set apart by its commitment to the teaching of biblical worldview, CPCA recognizes that equipping children for the world in which we live is a foundational responsibility. For Christian parents, this includes not only academic and personal growth of our young people, but their spiritual maturity and ability to live out and stand firm in their faith in Jesus Christ. For many families, this task feels daunting in the post-modern culture in which we live where even the definition of truth is called into question. Because many of our young people

Local Christian Student Highlights Bailey Aronson Classification: Senior Faith West Academy

Inspired by a book about forensic science she read in the fifth grade, Bailey has had the dream of one day working in a crime lab. In the fall she plans to start working on a Bachelor of Science in Forensic Chemistry at the University of Mississippi, (one of the leading colleges in the field). When asked if any of the three CSI television series played a part in developing her interest in working a crime scene investigation she stated that while working two jobs, maintaining her grades (she is valedictorian of her class), going on church missions, and playing volleyball there is little or no time for television. In July, Bailey will be going to Kolkata (Calcutta), India with a group of graduating seniors sponsored by Kingsland Baptist. The group will be working at Mother Teresa’s Home for the Destitute and Dying and a shelter for girls rescued from a life of prostitution. Besides mission work, the students will be touring sites of and learning about different world religions. If the opportunity presents itself Bailey said she would like to ride on an elephant, but is uncertain it will materialize this trip. Bailey has been playing volleyball since the third grade. One of places she currently works is Katy Volleyball Academy, helping other young girls hone their skills. Bailey played middle front blocker and loved to confuse the opponent’s blockers. Bailey said, “(What a great feeling) to execute a slide (faking a quick-set by coming from behind the setter) or hit left handed because the defense is not as well prepared.”

Samantha Moore Classification: Senior Houston Christian

If you walk into the cheer gym after school during the Varsity Cheer team’s practice you will see a special sight….sophomore Samantha Moore practicing with her squad. Samantha began cheering when she was 5 years old. She cheered off and on until Jr. High and has been cheering ever since. According to Samantha one of the best parts of being a Varsity cheerleader is having so many older girls around to be role models for her. It also help that cheer is a fun activity after school be excited about. On Monday nights you will find Samantha on the Houston Christian campus participating in Discipleship Groups. Discipleship Groups (known to Houston Christian students as ‘D-Groups’) is an opportunity for underclassmen to be mentored by upperclassmen as they walk through the Bible together. Samantha’s favorite part of D-Groups is the opportunity each week to set aside thoughts of school and homework and having time to talk about her spiritual life with her classmates. Attending Houston Christian is a family affair as her brother, Cameron, graduated from Houston Christian in May ‘12. Upon graduating from High School, Samantha hopes to become a pediatrician. Samantha attends the West campus of Second Baptist Church in Katy. Samantha’s favorite scripture is, “Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.” - 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18, NIV.

Pastor Profile: Worship Pastor John Cordes By Ruth Towns Photography by Sarah Hubbell of Enlightened Photography Music is part of his DNA. Worship pastor John Cordes leads a team of 35 volunteers at Fellowship at Cinco Ranch. They play drums, play bass, sing, run the lights and sound equipment, and operate the program that projects graphics on Sunday mornings. As Cordes orchestrates the programming meeting (and wears other hats such as the church’s graphic designer), he is responsible for the flow of the music, but lets God lead. “We are sensitive to what the Holy Spirit wants done in the service,” he says. Because music moves him deeply and is one of the ways he responds to God, he has a band, Forlorn Hope, and sings of bringing justice to the oppressed. How does he find the time? Cordes says, “We rehearse a couple times of month in the evenings—we all work and are raising families—and we play a couple times a month. This allows the music he writes to come to life in a band.

April / May 2013

Time really is a factor, especially because Cordes and his wife Vanessa are busy with three girls, 15-year-old Morgan, 10-yearold Bailey and 6-year-old Reagan. But the Cordes couple plans to increase their family through adoption. “Three years ago my wife and I began process of adopting a boy from Ethiopia. One barrier was the enormous expense, $30,000, and we had next to nothing in savings. But we knew we had room in our hearts and a place in our home for another child.” They love children and wanted to care for what Jesus defines as “one of the least of these.” They felt Ethiopia was the country from which to adopt, because children who are not adopted simply age out of the system, in some places as young as 13. When this happens their life expectancy is 27 years… and they will continue to make future orphans by dying early and leaving children without fathers and mothers. “We felt we could do our part. We could do for one what we wish we could do for all.” Through radical obedience to God, they began fundraising and

sent out 300 letters asking people to pray so that God would match them with a child. They stated that they needed about $30,000 and asked those who felt led to contribute. Then they invited those who had a heart for orphans to gather together. In late March they received great news. They went to Texas Children’s Hospital to understand what their adopted child’s issues would be, and got the referral. “Throughout this whole process, we were waiting for an unnamed, faceless child, waiting to be matched. Now we know we will be the parents of a little 16-month-old boy we have named Samuel in honor of Hannah’s prayer.” As readers rejoice with the Cordes family, they can also keep in mind ways to help. Many are not in a position to adopt, but can still support the effort through various organizations. Cordes points them to run4thechildren.org, a group that sponsors a run. This year it earned $25,000 for adoption advocacy (and was attended by Roger Clemens). On the site is information about 1:17, a ministry of The Fellowship at Cinco Ranch seeking to help provide justice for the oppressed and marginalized. Isaiah 1:17 says it well: “Learn to do right; seek justice. Defend the oppressed. Take up the cause of the fatherless; plead the case of the widow.” Learn more about John Cordes at thefellowship.org. Christian Themes in Films By Ruth Towns Did you see LES MISÉRABLES? It was released on DVD in March 2013 and deserves special mention as a Christian themed blockbuster. It is endorsed by Allied Faith & Family which serves an increasingly media engaged market—“religious America”— and encourages and assists the entertainment community in promoting life-affirming messages that touch the heart and uplift the human spirit. Below the plot is peeled back as we examine a book, stage production and major motion feature film that has enthralled faith-based communities (and the world). The Christian Component

Peter and Judas

This utterly enthralling story of forgiveness, self-sacrifice, redemption and hope was set in 19th-century France. An ex-prisoner, Jean Valjean (Hugh Jackman), is hunted for decades by a ruthless policeman Javert (Russell Crowe) after he breaks parole. The most striking aspect of this incredible film is that both the protagonist and antagonist are faithful Christians.

Both Valjean, through a major conversion initiated by a model priest, and Javert, another faithful Christian who prays to do God’s will, commit their lives to doing God’s will as they see it. But one operates with love while the other cares only about the letter of the law. One represents Peter and the other Judas Iscariot in that both betray Christ. Audiences see that one chooses repentance while the other

chooses despair. Book, Stage, Cinema The novel, written by French poet and playwright Victor Hugo, was first published in 1862 and is considered one of the greatest works of the nineteenth century. The musical was produced in France and adapted for an English-speaking audience in 1985 to a slew of negative “professional” reviews. But ticket-paying audiences loved it and its popularity spread as people shared the experience. No wonder the 2012 movie version (by Universal) has grossed $423,043,470 worldwide (as of March 2013) and garnered eight Academy Award nominations and three wins: 1.) Anne Hathaway for Best Supporting Actress, 2.) Makeup and 3.) Sound—the operatic drama is performed against the most stirring soundtrack ever recorded live on a film set.

A Taste for EVERY TASTEBUD.

The Narrow Path Within LES MISÉRABLES lies an unfolding tale of the paths we choose in life, the decisions we make, and how the steep, narrow, uphill path points toward ultimate fulfillment. It shows how our human choices often conflict with God’s plan for our lives, but in our surrender to divine providence we can be confident that things will work out in the end. For this reason, many will agree that the DVD deserves a place in their collection of inspiring movies.

Gone But Not Forgotten: Mark Williamson By Ruth Towns It is with sadness that we announce the passing of columnist Mark Williamson. Mark was renowned for his values and never allowed political correctness to dictate his views.Readers of Katy Christian Magazine are familiar with his fiery insights into religion and politics. Mark had broad experience in radio broadcasting, as a corporate pilot, a technical writer, and as a technical writing department manager for one of the nation’s largest computer manufacturers. Mark was a guest host of a local Christian talk show and broadcast a series of radio commentaries on America’s founding principles and current issues. He appeared on the local TBN affiliate (Houston) and God’s Learning Channel, a five-state network and world-wide satellite broadcast ministry based in Midland, Texas. As the Founder and President of Foundation Restoration Ministries/ Federal Intercessors, a national network of intercessors interceding for and prophesying over the nation and our civil government, Capitol Hill was increasingly a mission field focus for Mark. He traveled

to Washington regularly to intercede in the city and to meet with a substantial and growing number of Congressmen and Senators for ministerial counsel and personal prayer ministry. Mark had the high honor of a White House invitation in June of 2007 where he attended President Bush’s Veto announcement of the Embryonic Stem Cell Research Bill. He strategically prayer-walked the West Wing on September 11, 2007, and again on September 11, 2008. In March of 2009, he gave testimony before the Texas State Senate and in March of 2011 he also gave testimony before a Texas House Committee. On February 17, 2011, he served as the Guest Chaplain of the U. S. House of Representatives opening the day’s session in prayer. Mark traveled nationally as a conference ministry-team member and internationally on mission trips and prayer/spiritual warfare journeys to nations such as India, Turkey, Italy, Mexico, Argentina, Brazil and Paraguay. He also traveled to 20 state Capitols on intercessory assignments, prophesying and declaring truth and righteousness into state governments.

His obituary reads: Surrounded by the presence of the Holy Spirit, Joseph Mark Williamson of Katy, Texas born May 23, 1958 in Lubbock, Texas, raised in Ralls and Pecos, Texas, achieved the rank of Eagle Scout and was a Brotherhood member of the Order of the Arrow in Boy Scouts of America, graduating from Pecos High School in 1976, and an avid Dallas Cowboys fan, and departed this life to be ever present with the Lord on March 16, 2013. Mark was survived by his wife of 34 years Sarah Williamson of Katy, Texas; daughter Jennifer (Williamson) Garner and son-in-law Nathan Garner of Cumming, Georgia; daughter Jessica Williamson of Katy, Texas; and son John Mark Williamson of Katy, Texas., Texas. He was a member of Encourager Church of Houston, Texas for over 19 years and before beginning a broader based ministry, he led the Intercessory Ministry there for over 6 years and was a former member of the worship team. Mark was licensed to the ministry by Encourager Church in June 1998, was ordained as an Apostle and Prophet by Refuge of Restoration Ministries in 2003, and ordained with Encourager Church in 2009. It is our fervent hope that Mark’s vision, devotion and love for The Lord and for our country as embodied in 2 Chronicles 7:14 “If My people, who are called by My name, will humble themselves, and pray, and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive, and I will heal their land” will never be forgotten and carried on by those whose lives he touched. He will be greatly missed.

Behind the Screen By Ruth Towns

of potential candidates. Sadly, these employment experts may base their assessment strictly on what they find online—which means the “real” heart and mind of your child may never shine in an actual job interview because the impression has been clouded by unwise cyber interaction.

Are your children employable? Will pre-employment screening cost them a job? Parents, your teens and college students may be at risk of being “unemployable.” We hear many warnings about the Internet, but now (more than ever) is the time to take a hard look at the “online lives” of our children. Unwise use of Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr and other social media may cost them a leg up on more than their reputations. It can affect their careers. Why? Because employers are increasingly interested in behavior and the Internet allows them to prescreen candidates. Young people who are unwise in their social interactions may find themselves haunted by youthful indiscretions which are, literally, visible to the world. In a nutshell, employers may logically deduce that inappropriate online conduct equates to inappropriate workplace conduct. Defining the Word “Unwise” As people pour their hearts out online, certain entities may very well be assessing behavior. For instance, rants about school or jobs, lashing out about relationships, or even “cyber-slacking” can carry penalties… at least in the world of human resources. Organizational psychologists may look for a variety of factors above and beyond foul language and sexually explicit posts. They may be watching for clues into Internet addiction and mental health. Prescreening means “pre-judgement.” The focus is on weeding out potential hires who may abuse their online privileges on the job. No one is immune, for “cyber-stalking” by any number of organizations (and individuals) is common in this day and age. Employers want to hire people with sound judgment, not dubious behavior, and the Internet may become an albatross around the neck

A much-cited article brings light to this issue. Entitled “Validation of a New Scale for Measuring Problematic Internet Use: Implications for Pre-employment Screening,” this scholarly insight certainly raises implications for us all. We share an abstract below and encourage you to look at it closely. ABSTRACT The current study introduced a theory-driven, multidimensional measure of problematic Internet use: the Online Cognition Scale (OCS). Undergraduate students (n = 211) in an industrial/organizational psychology course completed the OCS, along with measures of procrastination, rejection sensitivity, loneliness, depression, and impulsivity. A confirmatory factor analysis indicated that problematic Internet use consists of four dimensions: diminished impulse control, loneliness/depression, social comfort, and distraction. As hypothesized, the OCS predicted all of the study variables in the expected directions. Representing a departure from previous research in this area, the current article focused on procrastination, impulsivity, and social rejection as key elements of problematic Internet use. Furthermore, interactive applications (e.g., chat) were most related to problematic Internet use, and scores on the OCS predicted being reprimanded at school or work for inappropriate Internet use. As a result, the utility of the OCS for both clinical assessment of Internet addiction and

as an organizational preemployment screening measure to identify potential employees who are likely to abuse the Internet in the workplace (also known as “cyberslacking”) were discussed. Citation: Richard A. Davis, Gordon L. Flett, and Avi Besser. CyberPsychology & Behavior. August 2002, 5(4): 331-345. doi:10.1089/10 9493102760275581. online.liebertpub.com/doi/abs/10.1089/10949 3102760275581 What You Can Do It can be awkward to “invade” your child’s privacy, but minor children should be supervised on all social media forums. The temptations stemming from loneliness, peer pressure and an incessant desire to “fit in” and be “popular” can drive our youth to follow the crowd. Perhaps the agreement should be: “If I allow you to use the computer, you must agree to be supervised. I will occasionally look at your online activity. Are we in agreement?” Another way of putting it: “I love you. Facebook does not love you. I have your best interests at heart. Twitter does not. I want you to excel and prosper. Tumblr could care less about your prosperity.” Another tactic: “We are all vulnerable to online surveillance. Employers can check all your online activity. Why set yourself up to fail? Be a good steward of the Internet and have it work FOR you, not AGAINST you. I am here to help you succeed.” Harsher: “You will not shame our family. You will not stoop to the lowest common denominator. I have raised you better than that. Your

future is brighter than that. Your reputation is more valuable than that.” One more idea: “Your posts are a reflection of your character. Make sure your posts do some good in the world. Make sure they witness to your core values.” Hand Over the Passwords Ask your child for log in and password codes for Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, Skype and other popular social platforms. Then check them out. What is your child posting? What are others posting? You have a right to know. You have a responsibility to know. Some parents will be relieved to find civil, respectful and appropriate online usage. Unfortunately, others may discover extremely objectionable language and graphics—a direct reflection of today’s moral decline. If so, perhaps God has just handed you a “teachable moment.” Now is the time to discuss the transparency of social media. Once posts go online, they remain in cyberspace forever… regardless of whether they are deleted from Facebook. The cyber imprint is still there, and even with privacy settings others may be able to find them. The lesson: Your posts can be held against you. College Students Students who no longer live at home have at their disposal all the freedoms… and vices… that interest future employers. 18-and19year-olds fit into that strange “no man’s land” of teenager vs. adult. They are now legal entities but have not fully developed. Perhaps this is the time to appeal to their adult status and share the study cited above. After all, no one wants to waste college tuition on a degree

that is marred by pre-employment screening. Right? Censorship? Remember, you are not preventing your child from interacting online. But you ARE requiring them to be civil and thoughtful in what they post. Just as all Christians develop a “filter” and strive to follow Jesus’ example, so should our youth. And guess what? Preemployment screening can take into account those who show online discretion and intellect. This proves that Godly behavior pays off. The bottom line is that the word of God, indeed, censors our behavior and this applies to all aspects of life—even virtual reality. Biblical Perspective Galations 6: 7-9 gives us an incredibly on-point summation. 7: Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap. 8: For he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting. 9: And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not.

1. Everything that you do has repercussions. It comes back to you one way or another. 2. You cannot escape the consequences of your actions. What you do comes back to you. 3. You will see the long-term effects of your actions. 4. Karma—The total effect of a person’s actions and conduct during the successive phases of the person’s existence, regarded as determining the person’s destiny, especially, in his next incarnation. 5. What goes around comes around. 6. Your actions all have consequences. Don’t ever be fooled into thinking that your actions don’t have consequences. Don’t think you can get away with bad choices even if you don’t seem to get caught. Remember, Galations 6: 7 tells us that God cannot be mocked. He sees it all. You really do reap what you sow. What we sow in one season, we reap in another. Sow a thought, you reap an act. Sow an act, you reap a habit. Sow a habit, you reap a character. Sow a character, you reap a consequence.

The Urban Dictionary Agrees A random Googling of “you reap what you sow” brought up the Urban Dictionary, known for its modern (and often salacious) vernacular. But even the extremely secular Urban Dictionary yielded this result in language our youth can easily understand. YOU REAP WHAT YOU SOW—THE DEFINITIONS

Happy Mother’s Day! By Ruth Towns On Sunday, May 12, we’ll celebrate the mothers in our lives—all the moms, stepmoms, grandmas and mentors who molded us what we are and still touch our lives. If you can, hug your mothers, wives and all the women in your lives. Call them. Send cards. Send flowers. Time is fleeting. Sometimes life is fleeting. After all, we eventually must say goodbye to our wonderful matriarchs, sometimes sooner rather than later. This brings to mind publisher Joe Menslage. Because of him, we can share Katy Christian Magazine with you, our wonderful readers. His story is notable because he lost his wife Nicole a few years ago and took up the reins as sole parent to his four children. Nicole was lost in a tragic car accident, snatched suddenly away from two daughters and two sons, just 8, 10, 12 and 14 at the time. Through the years we’ve watched Joe step up as a caring and devoted father. As a credit to his prayers and efforts, his kiddos are

well adjusted and have blossomed into young people of God. Some would call this a miracle, but it is actually a blessing. Joe is blessed beyond measure, and with God’s guidance has survived a catastrophic personal loss. His positive perspective and an eye on his children’s futures will surely earn him a place of honor in their lives, and eventually the lives of their children. So as we say “happy Mother’s Day” to one another, we can also include the single fathers who nurture and lead their families. Raising children is not simply “women’s work”—it is “family work” and takes precedent over everything else. Nothing is more important than our children and their walk with the Lord. This lovely poem by Lynn L. Caruso (found on Beliefnet.com touched our hearts. We share it with you as a tribute to mothers (and caregivers) everywhere: Remember always, your body is sacred ground. Your roots are strong and the sun holy. The gardeners who came before— Mother, grandmother, great-grandmother— Tilled your soil with the compost of their lives. And now, you hold the seeds. Plant them deeply in the furrow of this land. May what comes to you as flower One day ripe into fruit. And in your final years, May they return as shade. - Lynn L. Caruso
