Lesley Carruthers’ widely acclaimed sculptures are the product of a largely intuitive process, always informed and inspired by the landscapes in which she has lived and worked. Among her many commissions during her time in East Anglia was one for a major piece of public art. She also appeared in the Anglia TV series ‘Coastal Inspirations’ which featured local artists inspired by the landscape. Her work is much sought after, often by collectors who have found the sculptures add a very special kind of visual appeal to a garden or domestic setting. Returning to her native Scotland, and living on the shores of Loch Long, has resulted in an impressive and fascinating new body of work, again echoing the natural architecture and the rugged beauty of the surrounding land and seascapes. She describes her technique as instinctive: “often happening without advance planning or rational thought. I find the creative process both unpredictable and unfathomable”, she says.

Lesley Carruthers has exhibited widely, including: The Discerning Eye Exhibition, The Mall Galleries, London Byard Art Gallery, Cambridge, Buckenham Galleries, Southwold, Suffolk, The John Russell Gallery, Ipswich, Suffolk The Folkes-Miller Fine Art Gallery, Long Melford, Suffolk The Joanna Jones Gallery, Bottesford, Vale of Belvoir, Leicestershire The Paisley Art Institute

The process involves experimentation with shapes and forms, an evolutionary journey which ends with an aluminium casting. This is then ground, and sanded, polished, waxed and mounted until the beautiful finished product finally emerges in its full glory.

“When I saw the breadth, imagination and creativity of Lesley’s work it was empirical but had quality, depth and primarily an elegant abstraction. I was so impressed, we organised an exhibition to show the public of East Anglia that Lesley Carruthers the sculptor had indeed arrived.” Anthony R. Coe Gallery Director, The John Russell Gallery.

“ I always cherished the hope that one day I would commission work in which I could contribute design ideas. Lesley quickly grasped the brief and produced works that exceeded my expectations.” Paul Dyer PRIVATE COLLECTOR

“ Lesley Carruthers’ sculptures, like the lady herself, are very ‘open’ - each stands excitingly free in its own space. As we are lucky enough to have 7 pieces you will understand we find them very moreish.” Roger & Beate Harden PRIVATE COLLECTORS 13
