BO’NESS

CINEMA with warm welco "Hello. It’s good to know that London-based organisations with a national remit, like the British Film Institute, are putting their money where their mouth is in terms of supporting independent cinemas right across the UK to screen specialist and alternative films. With a bit of extra cash help from them we are able to present ‘The Proud Valley’ starring the African American singing star Paul Robeson as a man seeking work and acceptance in a Welsh coal mining community.… The film is part of the BFI’s Black Star season, but particularly relevant to anyone interested in our local mining heritage. The screening will be introduced by our special guest speaker – Keeper at the National Mining Museum Scotland. Great work for audiences is also being generated at one of our fellow Scottish independent cinemas: Dundee Contemporary Arts, whose Discovery film festival favourite – ‘Shorts for Wee Ones’ we will be showing on the 3rd December. The Discovery team have scoured the world for the year’s best short animations, sure to appeal to children age three and up, and coming to our Hippodrome screening really is the perfect way to make magical movie memories with your little ones. Sharing special movies with friends and family is for many an essential part of Christmas tradition and with this in mind we’ve laid on festive favourites: ‘Elf’, ‘It’s A Wonderful Life’ and a double-bill of ‘Father Christmas’ and ‘The Snowman’, as well as Tchaikovsky’s ballet ‘Sleeping Beauty’ filmed live, and there will be a yuletide twist to our café menu.

We look forward to welcoming you soon” Alison Strauss, Arts Development Officer (Film and Media)

Sun 11 Dec

19:30 (+ special guest)

The Hippodrome is proud to be taking part in the BFI Black Star season with our pick being the treasured 1940s film, ‘The Proud Valley’. We’re also delighted to welcome Ellie Swinbank, Keeper, National Mining Museum Scotland to introduce Sunday’s screening. Pen Tennyson directs this Ealing Studios drama set in a Welsh mining valley. In a role written for him, actor, singer and activist Paul Robeson stars as David Goliath, a charismatic African-American drifter who ends up in a small mining village in Wales. There, he finds work alongside the miners down the pit, and his magnificent singing voice attracts the attention of local choir director Dick Parry (Simon Lack), who has ambitions of winning the national choir contest on the strength of Goliath’s talent. However, a mining disaster puts both of these occupations on hold, and Goliath rouses a group of activists to march to London in the hope of reopening the mine in time to serve the nation’s wartime needs. BFI Black Star is the UK’s biggest ever season of film dedicated to celebrating the range, versatility and power of black actors in some of the finest performances ever committed to film. Christmas wouldn’t be Christmas without a Hippodrome outing for this much-loved cine-fable. It is Christmas Eve and George Bailey (Stewart), a dedicated, up-standing family-man, finds his beneficent company in danger of collapse, and contemplates suicide in the belief that it would be better for everyone if he was dead. But the prayers of his loved ones summon a novice guardian-angel named Clarence, keen to earn his wings by helping George. And so it passes that Clarence sets about showing George what things would have been like had he never been born… A Hippodrome sell out every Christmas, early booking recommended. We’re delighted to announce that the Bo’ness Belles will be performing a set of Christmas songs before the Friday screening, approx. 19.10 and we hope that you can make it along to enjoy the extra festivities Dir Frank Capra / USA / 1946 / 2hr 10min / b&w

Tickets: £13.50 (£10.80)

Following their hit run on Broadway, Ian McKellen and Patrick Stewart return to the West End stage in Harold Pinter’s 'No Man’s Land'. One summer’s evening, two ageing writers, Hirst and Spooner, meet in a Hampstead pub and continue their drinking into the night at Hirst’s stately house nearby. As the pair become increasingly inebriated, and their stories increasingly unbelievable, the lively conversation soon turns into a revealing power game, further complicated by the return home of two sinister younger men. Also starring Owen Teale and Damien Molony, don’t miss this glorious revival of Pinter’s comic classic. The broadcast will be followed by an exclusive Q&A with the cast and director Sean Mathias.
