Creative Loop, a partnership of six Scottish colleges, works to develop talent for Scotland’s creative media industries and aims to ensure that students are fully equipped with the skills and flair required by this constantly evolving and competitive sector. The two-day Creative Loop Student Media Festival will provide a platform for emerging talent in Film and Television, Radio and Digital Media to network with industry professionals, showcase their work and pitch their ideas to media commissioners for instant feedback. This festival will feature a variety of workshops and master classes across the different platforms led by leading industry figures.

10:00-11:00 PRESENTING SPEECH RADIO Presenter: Graham Stewart (BBC Scotland) Panel: Gina McKie (Bauer Radio), Steven Scott (Insight Radio) and Gary Robertson (BBC Radio Scotland) In this chat filled hour, three of Scotland’s top speech broadcasters discuss how good a training ground local radio is for speech radio and the key skills needed to make it in the industry.

11:15-12:15 LIFE AFTER RADIO COURSES Presenter: Ben Gilmour (West FM) Panel: Andy Smillie, Nicole Barrat and Lynne Ferguson Past HNC students who have had very different experiences since leaving their courses discuss the perils and pitfalls of establishing yourself in radio.

13:00-14:00 STATION IMAGING Panel: Stewart Priest, Krystie Weaver and Steve Martin The bits that play between the songs say a lot about a radio station. On speech stations, the jingles, sweepers and programming elements go a long way in building the brand of the station and help communicate its values to the listeners. What are the skills you need to make station-imaging elements? What makes great imaging work? If you have to change the on-air sound of one of the world’s most trusted brands, what do you do?

15:00-16:30 MAKING THE PERFECT DEMO Presenter: Graham Stewart Panel: Stuart Barrie (Capital Scotland) Joe Kilday (Central FM) and Ciaran O’Toole (96.3 Rock Radio) The key to getting discovered as a music radio talent is your demo! It’s so much more than just a few links and some music - it’s the two-minute piece of audio that could get you your first big break. Scotland’s Radio heavyweights discuss.

10:00-11:00 The Network and Fast Track Guest Speakers: Holly Blake, Producer and Francesca De Barr, Festival Assistant, MediaGuardian Edinburgh International Television Festival (MGEITF) The Network is a free, four-day event held alongside the MGEITF in August each year. The Network (formerly TVYP) is about making TV more accessible and offers an opportunity to see just how exciting working in TV really is. It provides free workshops, master classes, networking opportunities and career advice. This session will tell you more about The Network; the skills you will learn and the celebs and TV execs that you will work with over the four days. Advice and some general information about CVs, work experience and how to break into the industry will be provided.

11:15-13:00 PITCHING FOR RADIO AND ONLINE Panel:Tom Hodgkinson, Commissioner, BBC Scotland Online, Matt Hall, Head of Audio,The Guardian and Richard Melvin, Producer, Dabster Productions The panel will discuss how to develop ideas for radio and online, including podcasts and short films for broadcasters. Students in the audience will be given an opportunity to pitch some of their ideas to the panel for instant feedback and a chance to get their ideas selected for development.

IT’S ALL ABOUT THE GAME - APPS AND GETTING INTO THE INDUSTRY

PETER MULLAN: IN CONVERSATION

Guest Speaker: David Thomson, CEO, Ludometrics David Thomson founded games consultancy, Ludometrics in 2010, having spent over ten years in the Scottish games industry with Denki, Slam and as founder of mobile games developer, The Games Kitchen. This seminar discusses how to get into games and the making of the Gary: Tank Commander app, available free to download.

15:15-16:15 MAKING MUSIC FOR MEDIA Guest Speaker: Owen Parker, Music Producer and Composer Owen Parker is a Grammy nominated songwriter and producer. He has worked with some of the biggest acts on the UK pop scene including; The Pet Shop Boys, Girls Aloud, Amy MacDonald and Gabriella Cilmi. He currently makes a living writing, producing and playing live. He has made a number of pieces of music for television and radio, including theme tunes, jingles, commercials and comedy parodies for a wide range of clients including BBC Radio 4, BBC Radio 5 Live, BBC1, Channel Four, Channel Five, ESPN and Marmite. In this session, Owen will share his experiences of the pop music industry and discuss the ins and outs of making music for TV, radio and online projects.

Interviewer: Jonathan Melville, Freelance Film Journalist Award winning, Scottish actor, director and writer, Peter Mullan talks about his career to date and his plans for the future in this hour-long session. Students will have the opportunity to ask questions and get answers from the man himself.

11:15- 13:00 CUTTING IT - THE EDITOR DIRECTOR RELATIONSHIP Panel:Therese Lynch, Editor and Jacqui McAlpine, Director, BBC Scotland BBC Scotland’s Therese Lynch and Jacqui McAlpine have worked across a huge range of television output in broadcasting. In this session, they will talk about the postproduction process, and the variety of ways in which directors and editors work together to take raw footage and craft it into television programmes. During the workshop, they will cut live footage while highlighting tips and tricks of the cutting process. The session will be followed by an opportunity for selected students to cut a scene from a broadcast TV programme. Therese and Jacqui will choose the winning edit.

10:00-11:00 GETTING YOUR IDEAS ON AIR Presenter: Jim Gellatly Panel: Richard Melvin and Nick Low It’s pointless having great ideas for radio programmes if you don’t get them on air. In this session two of Scotland’s most prolific independent producers of radio and TV programmes share their secrets and tell some of their war stories.

10:00-11:00 MUSIC FOR GAMES Guest Speaker: Ged Grimes, Heist Records Scottish Composer and Music Producer, Ged Grimes founded Heist Records in 2010. Ged has worked with a variety of pop names including: Natalie Imbruglia, Deacon Blue and Eddi Reader and has created soundtracks for radio, film and television clients, including the BBC and Universal Pictures. This session focuses on the skills needed to succeed in composing and producing music for the Games industry, how music in games is now a vitally important part of the game play and how it has developed over the years.

DES CLARKE MASTER CLASS Presenter: Colin Kelly Guest Speaker: Des Clarke Des combines a career as a comedian and TV presenter with the Capital Scotland breakfast show. How does he come up with new things to talk about every day? How was the transition between the different brands he’s worked on? He discusses this and more with a guy who starts even earlier in the morning - BBC Radio Scotland’s Colin Kelly.

Come and hear from some of the experts why you need to understand the interactive world – and where it’s all going.

10:00-13:00 LIGHTING AND CAMERA MASTER CLASS WITH JONATHAN HARRISON Award winning lighting cameraman and world famous trainer, Jonathan Harrison, returns to the festival to deliver his acclaimed ‘Lighting on the Run’ workshop, in which he takes an audience through the most creative ways of lighting a scene on a small budget and to a tight timescale. In addition, he will deliver a master class on shooting video with a DSLR camera and how to get the best possible quality from this exciting development in the production process.

15:30-16:30 GREG McHUGH (GARY: TANK COMMANDER) – IN CONVERSATION Six years ago a character act called Gary: Tank Commander took to the comedy club circuit telling stories about his time as a soldier in Iraq. After first appearing in sketches and short form content, Gary: Tank Commander has now completed its second successful sitcom series for BBC Scotland. There’s now an app, and a top selling DVD on the way. If you’re a fan of the show or are interested in creating character comedy, come to this case study with the star of the show and creator, Greg McHugh.
