e m o c l e W Spring is coming, thank goodness, and Callendar Park is coming back to life. Premier dog walking location for the town, we’re revelling in all things canine this season. The Park Gallery will be hosting hilarious exhibition “Reggie’s Roller Palace” by sculptor Olivia Brown. Dogs on roller skates, guaranteed to put a smile on your face. If you regularly parade your pup in the park we’d love to see you both – take a snap and email it to us to post on our Facebook site, and please let us know why your dog is Falkirk’s Top Dog - get snapping! If you have brought your dog, don’t feel you can’t pop into Callendar House, we’re happy to provide a nice bowl of water for exhausted four legged friends, and a secure peg to leash them to while they wait for you. And if you’re feeling a bit poorer after the excesses of the Christmas season, you may be interested in how we reached the situation where money is such an important part of our culture. ‘Minted: A History of coins, notes and banking’ will give answers to the burning questions. Come and see Roman coins, locally printed bank notes, forged bank notes, the plates that made them, and shredded modern money. And before you start planning it, no you can’t stick the notes back together, we tried! And lastly, but by no means least, we’re delighted to offer you some refreshments in our NEW Tearoom at Callendar House. Moved from the stables and now situated in the Morning Room, you can enjoy some of the best views available from the House, some sumptuous home bakes and speciality teas, and a well-deserved sit down after all your exertions.

Wae worth thy pow’r, thou cursed leaf! Fell source o’ a’ my woe and grief! Lines from Burns written in 1780 about banknotes or rather his lack of said leaves! Over two hundred years later there are many of us who would agree with him and his words have as much resonance now as then. With the banking crisis and the current economic downturn it seemed like a good time to look at money, how it came about and the role of banking in helping us move from precious metal to worrying about numbers in a computer system. This exhibition will explore the history of Scottish banking, which was a global template for banking for many years and will look at coins, bank notes and what came before them. You can find out more about early forgery and see bank notes from local Falkirk banks along with items from the collections held by the Museum on the Mound.

Last chance to See International Garden Photographer of the Year exhibition Callendar House Saturday 3 November – Saturday 19 January Free
The winning and finalist images from one of the most prestigious international photography competitions were revealed in March 2012 at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew. An exhibition of these spectacular photographs has been in Callendar House this winter, just one venue on the international tour, and the first time the show has been in Scotland. It brings together the best garden, nature and outdoor photography from around the world, and includes the work of local photographer Graham Harris Graham.
Drop in chat with Graham Harris Graham Saturday 19 January, 11 - 12pm If you’ve ever picked up a camera and been inspired by the Scottish landscapes, native flora and fauna but need a bit of encouragement or someone to answer those awkward questions, then pop along to Callendar House for an informal, informative chat with one of last year’s finalists from the International Garden Photographer of the Year award. Local photographer Graham Harris Graham will be in the gallery from 11am -12pm to chat to people about the work on show, his own work and answer any questions you may have. By sharing knowledge and experience, Graham hopes we might be able to get more local people entering and winning, to show the rest of the world that Scotland is a source of world class photographers, despite living in a small country that might, to the casual observer, be a disadvantage.

Reggie’s Roller Palace 9 February – 21 April The Park Gallery hosts the first Scottish showing of Reggie’s Roller Palace by Olivia Brown. This is Olivia Brown’s largest installation to date and includes over 100 ceramic dogs. Plus the eponymous Reggie the Rat and an array of props including souvenir stands, booking kiosks, a judges’ panel and mini arena - in fact all that’s needed to create the set for a doggy roller derby. This event-inspired by human competitions such as the X Factor or Strictly Come Dancing - is watched by a canine audience enthralled by the on-stage pyrotechnics of Kenny and his display team. Full of witty details such as the pouting booking clerk (complete with pink nails to match her curly pink wig), this is an exuberant, delightfully over-the-top installation. But there’s also a more serious side to it as Brown uses her installation to parody our cult of celebrity and worship of the worthless. She draws attention to how celebrities involved in this type of event become marketing machines endorsing products or creating brands with an authority simply derived from their often inane achievements. Olivia graduated from Manchester Metropolitan University in 1999 with a first class honours degree in Contemporary Craft and she is widely known for her ceramic sculptures and site specific installations.

Olivia will talk about her latest installation Reggie’s Roller Palace and give an insight into the concepts and inspirations behind the piece. Reggie’s Roller Palace is inspired by the modern cult of celebrity and our obsession with it which fuels the industry. Olivia will be giving a guided tour of the installation and discussing more in depth the individual characters that make up the show such as celebrity judge Elvis the Whippet and Reggie himself. The installation focuses heavily on the mass marketing and branding that overpowers our society and Olivia will be discussing the ideas behind the graphics featured such as Toni’s Toxigel and magic Slim a pill, as well as how she has sourced the individual components of the show such as the admittance tickets and merchandise.
£25 (please wear old clothes) Olivia will lead a workshop where she will be demonstrating how to make one of her miniature dogs in clay. Using slab building and modelling techniques Olivia will be demonstrating how she conveys the characters of dogs in each piece she makes. Those attending the workshop will then be given the opportunity to make their own clay sculpture and are invited to bring along their own photos to work from. Guided by Olivia, by the end of the workshop everybody will have a sculpture to take home once fired.

“The world is filled with lifeless objects, most become a background. The vision is to create intelligent and playful projects exploring human interaction that evoke personal value, open our imaginations, and make us smile.” The work is inspired by plants and organisms expanding this theme as plants are a fundamental part of life. They generate oxygen, food and medicine that allow humans and other life forms to exist. Fraser's work explores natural light, movement, feelings, smells and sounds. He examines how this affects our own interpretations of art & design. One of the highlights of the exhibition will examine local botanical interests through playful objects, where knowledge gained can be passed on, and the exploration of new ideas and materials can be shared. Fraser received a Creative Scotland Innovation award in 2012.

Our teashop is moving into Callendar House and we’d be delighted if you joined us for a cup of tea. From Monday 21 January 2013 our café will be relocated to the Morning Room at Callendar House.

The new Tearoom offers some of the best views of Callendar Park and it gives us a great opportunity to share a lovely room with far more people. We also get to show off some of the lovely treasures we have in the house in a relaxed and social space. Drink your tea, have a blether and sit in part of the house built in c 1670 as part of the reconstruction after the siege and partial demolition by Cromwell’s forces. But that’s another story…… We don’t mind muddy boots or trainers (give them a scrub with our new mats and boot cleaners) and umbrellas and very wet coats will be stored for you by our staff.
