The Architectural Association Interprofessional Studio is a post-graduate programme exploring the collaboration between several creative fields, genres and mediums. The students, tutors and directors at the Architectural Association School of Architecture push the boundaries of creative collectives through the research, design and implementation/ production of a series of spatial performances and configurations.

Contemporary Dance, Choreography, Architecture

Menglan Wu, China Architecture, Photography, Painting

Suh-in Park, South Korea Product, Graphic and Industrial Design

The main aim of the studio is to create a multidisciplinary platform gathering professionals and students from the various backgrounds and fields of practice. Combining every domain of art, AAIS creates a series of cross-disciplinary events. Through the video, sound, and movement students reveal the layers of main year’s theme, unreal; playing with the space, time and scale. 3

The video-installation aspires to challenge the perception of familiar spaces. By playing with the fundamentals of video and projection such as perspective, scale, materials, pacing and framing, we dematerialize space and as a result the aspects of everyday life become abstract and conceptual. By using blurred images, kaleidoscopic effects, extreme zoom-ins, image rotations and reflections, we evoke the feeling of dreaming or drifting in memory.

Ritualistic actions and sounds as well as lyricism are employed to produce a spiritual environment. In addition we use time-lapse, asynchronous projections of the same action, velocity and time loops, to bend time. The several elements of the installation further create the sense of boxes within boxes, realities within realities and try to create bridges between them. The convention of space-time is thus deconstructed and remains fluid, open for the visitor to give meaning to.

4

Through the phenomenological experience produced by the video installation, the simultaneous presence of three different worlds/ realities is enhanced: the material world of the installation, the world as captured in video and the virtual world that resides in our consciousness. Consequently the video installation is a fleeting experience, a celebration of the moment and an open-ended event. This is further enhanced by the strong presence of humans serving and performing the spatial elements and the equipment plays a key role in creating a sense of congenial looseness.

Through the peaks and ambient tones, the sound installation takes the audience for the spiRITUAL journey. The sequences of the various soundscapes build up respectively a sense of the presence, then growing tension, and finally catharsis. All the elements of the spatial configuration, such as projections, scattered chairs, blind folds, glasses, metal pieces and paper tapes, consist into one, analog, spatial instrument.

YI-JONG GONG-GAN sound experience AA School of Architecture London, 26/11/2015 area AAIS graduate programme spatial installation / projections / objects 2015

The composition is enhanced with the analog part; during which the developed sound score played in digital 7.1 surround system quality is juxtaposed with a pre-recorded sounds of tape and real-time tearing of the floor lines. The element of the blind folds amplifies the perception of the narration. While all audience members have the eyes covered, all senses are sharpened. Participators can instinctively feel the presence and movement of the performers, while the sense of hearing seems to be deceptive. At the end, the spectators ‘awake’ in empty room having a sense of teleportation or temporary disorientation after the undergone journey.

7

“Through the intertwinement of performance, choreography, sound and video the AAIS team scratches the surface of the year’s topic “UnReal” and introduces a series of events coming up later in 2016. An ensemble of professionals and mediums aspire to unweave the real and the virtual, peel off their layers and unfold them into 4D space. On the borderline between the old and the new year, you are invited to step through the threshold of the uncanny and enter Yijong gong-gan. Say hello from the other side.” - AA Event List, Week 12 AAIS Final Jury announcement

8

‘Peel’ is a choreographed performance summing up the 3-week long block of seminars, workshops and lectures on the movement. Dancers and choreographers form the New Movement Collective, interdisciplinary dance group, introduced the basics of the filed. The collectvie investigation has been focused on the idea of ‘creating the bonds with the audience’ and ‘playing with the roles and expectations’. Many elements found its continuation, for example the line projections. Some others, such us soud score, has been developed further. The performance experimentation with the media has been enhanced with the video work titled ‘Peel’ displayed in 3D quality.

AAIS interprets this year’s Biennale theme, Energy/Self(IE)/Space by looking at the permeable character of the real and unreal. Yi-jong gong-gan is a Korean term which refers to a mediating space rather than a specific place. It cannot be tangibly defined but can be cognized. It is constructed before, during or after a state of being; a space in between. This notion challenges human perceptions and identities; it peels their layers and exposes their fluidity. Presence, interactions and people shape our personality, our beliefs and expectations; Yi-jong gong-gan testifies that we are entangled in constantly shifting physical, virtual and social constructions.

https://vimeo.com/167039204

Malopolska garden of arts’ entrance hall / atrium is a transitional space, channeling and filtering the outside and the inside worlds; literally a threshold. The creative team from the Architectural Association Interprofessional Studio (AAIS) incorporates a synthesis of several mediums to render and constitute the atrium’s spatial configuration. During the course of the event the performers activate and animate the space, weaving in four-dimensions, structure, choreography, live soundscape and projection. Morphing into an ever-evolving organism, the remaining structure will live on-site inviting the general public to perform within it.

XYZ/s is a site-specific project engaging different levels and spaces at the Watermans Art Centre in London. Questioning our perception of reality, the performance examines the relationships between virtual and physical worlds. Through the use of multiple mediums, interactive and participatory elements as well as analogue and digital media, we reverse the roles, shift the spaces, and play with the time (life-feed vs. pre -recorded picture) and audience expectations through the guided narration.

XYZ/s attempts to virtualise the real and realise the virtual, forming an intersecting space between reality and unreality. Inspired by the simulation argument we assumed 3 types of actions: permanent (exhibition) repeatable/circular (repetitive performance/ installation) and one time only – finale (interactive performance). Along with the open studio, dance rehearsals, exhibition and student panel talk, all actions consist into XYZ/s interdisciplinary event at Watermans Art Centre.

SUPERPOSITION is a multidisciplinary performance & interprofessional exchange platform which draws inspiration from the city of Vienna, tangible and intangible spaces and theories regarding our perception of reality. It weaves them into the fabric of spacetime inviting visitors to interact with it. Developed videomapping projections and design elements combined into immersive performative costume has been mutually interlinked and synchronised within the sound and choreography resulting in overwhelming spatial experience.

The event’s programme offers, inter alia, MOVEMENT RESEARCH LAB experimental choreography workshop; AAIS EXHIBITION presentiation of the previous events, theoretical and practical research, experimentations, side projects and backstage experiences; SOIRÉE WITH AAIS & FRIENDS two evenings with drinks, snacks, DJ & VJ sets, along with the menu-designed culinary experience and open panel discussion

XYZ/s extended is a multimedia, interactive performance/installation which challenges the relationships among performers, visitors, objects, space and our senses. It draws inspiration from some of the most prominent theories of physics and philosophy, creating an interplay of the four dimensions (point, line, plane and time). The visitors are encouraged to explore three different spaces and find themselves in various roles and situations. Each space has its own immersive environment for people to experience and interact with.

EXHIBITION DESIGN AA Project Review 2016 AAIS exhibition AAIS graduate programme concept / executive project 2016

The multifunctional system performing as a static structure, performance element, costume design & choreography component, video, video mapping and sound material, and finally as an exhibition system. Elaborated design successfully convinces a symbolic meaning originating from the assumed philosophy and the primal determinants of the space, which are point and 22 line.

The structure efficiently combines the low costs of CNC production, lightness and adaptability to many functions, capability of international transportation, as well as in the possibility of combining with other materials such as cardboard tubes, elastic ribbons and cork bards, which testifies on its universality.

Developed philosophy, metaphorical meanings and symbols has been translated into flavor's dimension. Each snack reveals another aspect of 'unreality'; both in the form and taste. A sensation has been enhanced by the element of the game. Designed menu and graphic motives enables juxtaposing the graphics to create the own composition of the flavor.

Chef ’s Blog unReal Paradoxically everything started with the dessert. Thinking about main theme of the year, unReal, the association of reversed-reality or negation of the gravity came as the first. Then a translation of ‘reversing the world upside-down’ brought the need of an adhesive, a glue’s consistency. By following the trace, from sugar to honey, finally to caramel. That smell and memory of from the childhood; street-venders selling the caramelized nuts. Then I knew, that the whole idea need only a touch of twist. Stroke of a contrast. Barely 3 ingredients – minimal and poetic. In that manner, caramelized in salty caramel walnuts were born. Served with reversed shoot-glass gained a strong presence and symbolical meaning.

MOVEMENT RESEARCH LAB I PART 1 SUPERPOSITION 17/06/2016 Turkischer Brunnen | TĂźrkenschanzpark AAIS graduate programme elastic ribbons, rules, spoken inructions 2016

Movement Research Lab was a collateral project of the SUPERPOSITION event. This outdoor movement workshop series transform elements of the design and choreography into an entertaining game contributing to the promotion of this interdisciplinary event in Vienna.

The main goal of the game was to re-create multiple configurations using elastic ribbons. Fluctuating spatial arrangements bear a notion of the transient aspect of the moment, movement and space. This exceptional experience was based on the idea of creating/designing the mutual bonds and social interactions.

MOVEMENT RESEARCH LAB I PART 2 SUPERPOSITION 19/06/2016 Architekturzentrum Wien | MuseumsQuartier AAIS graduate programme elastic ribbons, fluo tape, rules, spoken inructions 2016 2nd edition of the open-air movement workshops translated the primal design elements into 2D game board. The rules has been precisely defined so the participants have been giving clear instructions. The aim was to create multiple spatial arrangements via synchronised and controlled manner, which led to empirical examination of shaping the space.
