MEET THE GAMECOCK HEAD COACH

Head Coach

Neil Macdonald

FIFTH SEASON 2014 OVC COACH OF THE YEAR

Neil Macdonald begins his fifth season as head coach of the Jacksonville State soccer program and has laid groundwork over a four-year span for the program that he envisions. In just four seasons at JSU, Macdonald has changed the mindset of the Gamecock soccer program. After one season through the Ohio Valley Conference without a league win under its belt, JSU and Macdonald defied the preseason prognostications and turned in a 6-4 worksheet within the conference and an 11-win season in 2014. Jax State made its fourth OVC Tournament appearance and the first since 2005. JSU made an incredible run in the conference tournament, reaching the championship match before falling to SIU Edwardsville in overtime. The Gamecocks opened with a win over UT Martin in penalty kicks in the opening round before dispatching regular season champion and host, Southeast Missouri, 1-0, in the semifinals. His peers in the league took noticed of the work he did during the 2014 campaign and named him the OVC Coach of the Year. The honor is the first of Macdonald’s coaching career and just the second JSU coach to receive the coach of the year accolade. He is the first to claim the award in the program’s OVC history. Lisa Howe, the program’s first coach, won the Atlantic Sun Coach of the Year honor in 1999 and 2002. In his fourth season in charge of the program, the Gamecocks were competitive throughout a tough 5-13-1 overall mark and a 2-8 record in OVC matches as 11 of the 13 setbacks were by one goal, including a pair of double overtime results. Macdonald’s club was a veteran club with nine seniors that were key to the foundation of the program under his leadership. Spearheading the senior leadership was Justine Panchuk. The four-year player finished her career ranked sixth all-time on the program’s minutes-played chart with 5,767 minutes logged. Panchuck fini9shed her career tied for second all-time at JSU in matches played. Goalkeeper Caroline Robinson was a mainstay in goal throughout the 2016 season. Robinson ranked in the top-20 among NCAA Division I goalkeepers for minutes played during the season. She posted a pair of shutouts in 2016 to move her in to a tie for third place on JSU’s career shutouts list with 10 in her career. For the fifth consecutive year, the JSU soccer program has been represented on the OVC’s All Newcomer Team with freshman Cheyenne Carden receiving the honor in 2016. Carden becomes the ninth JSU player to be voted on the first-year player postseason team. She extends JSU’s list of having a member on the squad to five, joining Kelsey Bright (2012), Mackenzie Bellows (2013), Chelsi Bender (2014) and Claire Petersen (2015). Carden put together a solid first season at JSU after sharing top goal-scoring honors on the team with Nadia Plawiuk. The Huntsville, Alabama native registered three goals with all of them coming against OVC competition. Carden finished her first season at JSU having played in 20 matches and starting in 17 of those matches. She made her first start of the season against The Citadel on Sept. 18. Carden tallied 15 shots on the season, including eight on goal chances. She ranked in the top 10 of the OVC in league matches only in points and goals. In 2015, JSU turned in another program-first as it posted a 5-4-1 mark in the OVC, which was the best conference mark since joining the league in 2003. The Gamecocks finished third in the league standings to finish third in the OVC and hosted Southeast Missouri in the first round of the 2015 OVC Soccer Championship. Macdonald’s third squad at Jax State finished the season with an overall mark of 8-9-2. The Gamecocks were balanced throughout the season, earning four wins at home and four impressive road wins, including conference victories at SIU Edwardsville, UT Martin and Belmont. JSU was fueled by its seven-member senior class, led by top offensive threats Kelsey Bright and Courtney Hurt. The duo combined for 10 of JSU’s 23 goals on the season and paced an offense that collected 222 total shots on the season. Bright finished her career equal with former Gamecock and teammate Jackie Rush as the leaders on the program’s all-time shots list with 210. In four seasons at JSU, Bright posted 27 career goals and ranks tied for third on JSU’s career goals-scored list with Andrea Poole (1997-99). Hurt also etched her name on JSU’s all-time scoring list and all-time goals-scored chart. Hurt closed out a decorative career on the pitch with 147 career shots and registering 23 career goals. A pair of Gamecocks was honored during the 2015 by the OVC as goalkeeper Caroline Robinson and midfielder Claire Petersen picked up weekly accolades. Robinson earned the OVC Goalkeeper of the Week honor after posting a pair of shutouts for JSU against SIUE and Eastern Illinois. Petersen followed that feat the following week as one of the top players in the OVC that weekend after a pair of goals and an assist in a victory over Austin Peay. Petersen

wrapped up her first season on the club with a spot on the All-OVC Second Team and listed on the OVC All-Newcomer squad. Petersen was one of two Gamecocks to achieve all conference status as senior Olivia Drapes was named to the league’s first team as a defensive specialist. The 2014 squad shattered many team and individual program records as the Gamecocks recorded 54 goals during the season, which led the conference by 12. JSU averaged 2.45 goals per contest and finished with nearly 300 shots on the season. Jax State also broke the program’s assist mark of 41 that was set in 1998 with 48 assists in 2014. JSU set a new program and OVC record for goals scored in a single game in a 15-0 win over Mississippi Valley State. The previous mark was 12 against Alabama State on Sept. 23, 2008. It marks the third time in the program’s history to reach double figure goals against an opponent. JSU’s success in the classroom has not waivered since Macdonald took over. JSU has had six players named to the NSCAA Scholar All-South Region list in 2015 and for the seventh year in a row, members of the Jacksonville State soccer team were honored by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America for their outstanding academic performance with a NSCAA Team Academic Award while maintaining a 3.29 cumulative team grade-point average during the 2014-15 academic year. Macdonald was named the third head coach in JSU’s soccer program in February of 2013. The Gamecocks finished with a 4-13-2 overall mark, but the he saw bright spots throughout his first season on the Jax State side. The Macdonald Era got off to a good start by claiming the season opener at McNeese State. It marked the first time JSU won its season-opening contest since the 2000 season. Jax State also won Macdonald’s home debut with a 4-0 blanking of in-state foe Alabama A&M. The four goals scored in the match was a season high for the Gamecocks. His squad returned to the pitch the following Friday to do something that has not been done in three seasons, beat in-state nemesis Troy. Then-freshman Mackenzie Bellows connected on the game-winning goal in double overtime to post the 1-0 result. After being battle tested in the non-conference slate, the Gamecocks put forth a valiant effort against Ohio Valley Conference sides. The 2013 squad dropped a tough 2-1 extra time affair to Morehead State and recorded a draw against Tennessee Tech. Two members of Macdonald’s first JSU squad earned postseason accolades. Jackie Rush, who served as one of the 2013 captains, led by example throughout the first year of the Neil Macdonald era at Jax State. The Trophy Club, Texas, native averaged 4.32 shots per game in 2013 and scored a team-high five goals and 11 total points. A 19-game starter for the Gamecocks in the midfield, Rush was tabbed the OVC’s Offensive Player of the Week after narrowly missing a hat trick against Alabama A&M in September. For the second-straight year, a Gamecock was represented on the OVC’s AllNewcomer squad as freshman Mackenzie Bellows was voted on the team. Bellows, who came to JSU from Calgary, Alberta, Canada, quickly made an impression on Macdonald from the time she stepped foot on campus and started all 19 matches. The midfielder ranked third on the team in points with six after producing a pair of goals and assists. JSU continued its string of consecutive National Soccer Coaches Association of America Women’s Team Academic Awards to five consecutive years and the eighth time in the program’s history. To be eligible for the award, teams must have a team grade point average of 3.0 or better. Jax State turned in a 3.38 GPA, which was the highest among the ten in-state programs that also received the academic team honor – UAB (3.23), Alabama (3.35), Auburn (3.34), Auburn-Montgomery (3.06), Alabama State (3.34), Faulkner (3.09), South Alabama (3.05), Spring Hill (3.24) and Troy (3.30). JSU was one of eight OVC programs to accomplish a 3.00 or better in the classroom. JSU also claimed the OVC’s 2013 Team Sportsmanship Award for soccer. The OVC Team Sportsmanship Award is voted on by the student-athletes and coaches of the respective sports and the team awards are bestowed upon the Conference squads deemed to have best exhibited the standards of sportsmanship and ethical behavior as outlined by the OVC and NCAA. Included in the areas for evaluation are the conduct of student-athletes, coaches, staff and administrators and fans. Macdonald has posted a 230-169-24 record during his 18-year coaching career, which includes his first three seasons at JSU and nine seasons at Mississippi State. The Inverness, Scotland, native came to the United States in 1997, where he was four-year starter for Augusta State. Macdonald captained the team during his junior and senior seasons and was also a recipient of a handful of team awards, as well as one conference player of the week accolade. He played and started in every game he was eligible for during his illustrious career in Augusta, Ga., and he left the distinguished academic institution as the career record holder in games played and games started. Macdonald began his coaching career as an assistant at Iowa Central Community College in 1997, where he helped coach both the men’s and women’s soccer teams. In his initial season, the women finished the season as regional champions with a 9-3-1 record and featured the nation’s leading www.JSUGamecockSports.com

MEET THE GAMECOCK ASSISTANT COACH

Assistant Coach

Nikki Brown Neil Macdonald didn’t have to look very far when the assistant coaching position came open prior to the 2015 off-season when graduate assistant Nikki Brown was promoted to full-time status.

Brown, entering her third season in the position, was instrumental as a graduate assistant with the program in 2013 and 2014. After concluding a phenomenal soccer career at the University of North Alabama, she made the transition to the coaching profession under Neil Macdonald. In her first two seasons, Brown has been invaluable in the recruiting process of the last two signing classes. JSU inked 10 newcomers in 2016 and hauled in seven new Gamecocks prior to the 2017 season. In 2016 and for the fifth consecutive year, the JSU soccer program has been represented on the OVC’s All Newcomer Team with freshman Cheyenne Carden receiving the honor in 2016. The Gamecocks were competitive throughout a tough 5-13-1 overall mark and a 2-8 record in OVC matches in 2016 as 11 of the 13 setbacks were by one goal, including a pair of double overtime results.

While at JSU, Brown has led the program’s community service efforts with the local recreation organization and also organizes the program’s philanthropy efforts. In 2015, Brown and the Gamecocks joined with the Exchange Club of Jacksonville to support the prevention of child abuse. The club hosted an online auction with all the proceeds benefiting child abuse prevention. The auction raised over $1,500 in contributions to the cause. In 2014, JSU defied the preseason prognostications and turned in a 6-4 worksheet within the conference and an 11-win season. Brown, a native of Bognor Regis, England, helped the Lions to an impressive 63-16-3 record in her four seasons at the Florence, Ala., school. The four-year starter appeared in 81 matches, including 78 starts at UNA. While fighting through injuries the entire 2012 season, Brown finished with 11 points behind two goals and seven assists. Her seven assists tied for sixth in the Gulf South Conference. She was also listed sixth in the league with a .053 assists-per game average. Brown established a new UNA career assist record with 51 over a four-year time frame. She earned First Team All-GSC distinction in 2009, 2010 and 2011, while being tabbed Second Team All-GSC as a senior. The captain of the 2012 UNA squad also nabbed All-South Region honors from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America. She also garnered GSC All-tournament honors after helping lead the lions to the conference championship against West Florida.

Sean Donahue Sean Donahue begins his second year on head coach Neil Macdonald’s staff as a graduate assistant. Donahue will be in charge of the goalkeepers at Jax State. In his first season with the Gamecocks, he mentored Caroline Robinson to being one of the top keepers in the Ohio Valley Conference and climbing JSU’s all-time goalkeeper lists. Robinson ranked in the top-20 among NCAA Division I goalkeepers for minutes played during the season. She posted a pair of shutouts in 2016 to move her in to a tie for third place on JSU’s career shutouts list with 10 in her career.

Brown started collecting post-season accolades in her freshman season. She was named a First Team Daktronics All-South Region selection three times, while also accumulating Second Team Daktronics AllAmerica honors from 2009-2011. Her dedication was not left on the pitch, as she excelled in the classroom as well. In 2013, she was awarded with the University of North Alabama Female Student-Athlete of the Year Award because of her work on the field and in the classroom, carrying a 3.77 grade point average as a physical education major. Her academic success also earned her Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society status and a spot on the GSC All-Academic Team. Brown earned a spot on the GSC’s Top 10 Award for the third consecutive year in June of 2013. The GSC Top 10 Awards are based on athletic, academic and extracurricular achievement during the 2012-13 academic year and recognize the top five male and top five female student-athletes as the cream of the GSC crop. She earned her bachelor’s degree in physical education from UNA in 2013 and received her master’s degree in sports management from JSU in 2015. She is the daughter of Malcolm and Laura Brown.

THE OHIO VALLEY CONFERENCE Now in its 70th year, the Ohio Valley Conference continues to build on the success that has made it the nation’s eighth-oldest NCAA Division I conference. In May 2011 the Conference expanded for the second time in four years, adding Belmont University which began competition in the 201213 academic year. The addition of Belmont gave the OVC 12 members, the most the league has had at one time in its illustrious history. The move added a second team in the city of Nashville and was the first addition to the league since Southern Illinois University Edwardsville joined in 2008. Subsequently, the league has shown its stability over the past decade, seeing only one member institution depart over the past 17 years. The 2009-10 school year saw a change in leadership as Beth DeBauche was named the seventh full-time Commissioner in league history on July 28, 2009. The last three commissioners of the OVC have moved onto jobs as the commissioner of the Big Ten, Big 12 and the Mid-American Conferences. The OVC’s proud history dates back to 1948, but seeds for the new league were actually planted in 1941. It was then that Roy Stewart, the athletics director at Murray State, Charles “Turkey” Hughes, the athletics director at Eastern Kentucky, and Kelly Thompson, the public relations director at Western Kentucky, first broached the idea of forming a new conference. Discussions were put on hold by World War II, but reemerged February 27-28, 1948 at the Kentucky Hotel in Louisville as the three original institutions combined with Morehead State, Louisville and Evansville to form the OVC. In the 1950s, the OVC became a pioneer on a much more significant scale socially. During times of racial segregation, league member Morehead State became one of the first non-traditionally black mid-southern institutions to accept a black

student. In 1958 Marshall Banks earned athletically-related aid at Morehead, which signed a second black athlete, Howard Murphy, a year later. In 1961 Murphy earned all-conference recognition as a halfback in football. With racial barriers broken, the rest of the institutions in the league began to provide educational and athletic opportunities to African-Americans. After Title IX legislation passed in 1972, women’s athletics began a rebirth on the national scene as the NCAA began sponsoring and marketing women’s sports. Recognizing the need to provide increased opportunities for female athletes, the OVC began formulating plans for women’s athletics in 1975 and established women’s championships in the sports of basketball, tennis and track in 1977, with cross country and volleyball added over the next four years. Those sports were initially governed by the Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (AIAW), but the overall strength of women’s programs in the league was demonstrated by the automatic bids the OVC instantly received when the NCAA became the governing body in 1982. The conference added women’s golf and softball in 1994 and women’s soccer in 1998.

Through the past 69 years, 15 teams have won or shared the league’s football title. The list is led by Eastern Kentucky, winner of 21 outright or shared football crowns, which is tied for the most in Football Championship Subdivision history (with Massachusetts). Among OVC teams, former member Middle Tennessee is next with 11 titles, followed by Tennessee Tech with 10, and Murray State and former member Western Kentucky with eight apiece. Eastern Illinois has claimed seven football crowns and Jacksonville State has six, while Morehead State, Tennessee State and former members Evansville and East Tennessee State have captured two apiece. Austin Peay, Southeast Missouri, UT Martin and former member Youngstown State have one title apiece.

Why We Are The Gamecocks “Go Eagle Owls!” would be the resounding cry from Paul Snow Stadium today if ardent fans hadn’t decided 50 years ago that the school mascot should be a bird of a different feather. Jacksonville State University’s first football team was fielded in the late 1800’s and nicknamed in honor of a rare predatory bird found near the Arctic circle. The exact details are lost to history, but a group of fans decided it was hard for the school’s image to soar like an eagle if the team’s name was something of a turkey. People like E.C. Wilson, Bruce Chase and Charles Sprayberry felt a more collegiatesounding moniker would be more appropriate. The supporters looked to Southern culture rather than the north pole to symbolize the school’s tough spirit. Tongue firmly planted in beak, Gamecock supporters crowed the loudest, and the University found itself with a new identity: a mascot familiar to everyone, including the farm boys who comprised most of the student body back then.

The State Normal School (SNS) team was sparse by today’s standards, but the gridiron action was competitive from the start. Present day rivalries such as Samford (Howard College) and Troy State were rooted in those early games. The team had only 23 players when SNS was renamed Jacksonville Teachers College in 1946, with Head Coach Don Salls beginning his first season, but there was a “big school” atmosphere developing in the foothills.

It was all worked out by 1947 when the Fighting Gamecocks took to the field for the first time. And, as is true to the nature of the warlike bird itself, the football team and other athletes fought their way to respectability in intercollegiate ranks - eventually bringing home a national championship in every major sport.

Along with the new name came new colors. The blue and gold were tossed out in favor of the familiar red and white worn by the area high school players. The story goes that there were two camps - those who wanted to keep the Eagle Owl nickname and those who wanted new colors. Legend has it that a compromise was worked out; new colors for a new mascot.

For nearly a half-century – up until 1946 – the fledgling Eagle Owls hooted with pride from the scanty facilities adjacent to the field at John Forney National Guard Armory.

THE HISTORY From modest beginnings, Jacksonville State University has evolved into the educational center of Northeast Alabama. The Alabama Legislature in the 1882-83 session created a state normal school when Governor Edward O’Neal signed into law a bill creating the school on February 22, 1883. Jacksonville State Normal School acquired the facilities and equipment of Calhoun College, consisting of 12 acres of land and a two-story brick building. The Board of Directors elected James G. Ryals, Jr., as the first president. The school opened with three instructors: W. J. Borden, Mathematics; Eliza A. Bowen, English; and Ida J. Woodward, primary department. As stipulated in the establishing act, the Normal School administered a preparatory school for children of the town and surrounding areas. At the end of the first year, on August 15, 1884, William Mark Hames, President of the Board of Directors, reported that funds totaling $4,751.25 had been received, including $2,500 from the state; that 25 students were enrolled in the normal school; and that 222 were in the preparatory school.

The Normal School remained in operation until 1930, when it became Jacksonville State Teachers College. Five years later, the College earned regional accreditation from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. The name again changed to Jacksonville State College in 1957 when the first graduate program—the master’s degree in elementary education—was created. On August 2, 1966, the Legislature authorized the State Board of Education to elevate the College to university status. On August 17, 1967, the Legislature established an independent Board of Trustees for the University and divested jurisdiction from the State Board of Education.

GREG SEITZ

G

ATHLETIC DIRECTOR

reg Seitz was named Director of Athletics at Jacksonville State by President Dr. John M. Beehler on February 26, 2016 after more than two decades of service to the University.

Seitz, who is in his 25th year in the athletic department at JSU, served as interim Athletic Director for 14 months, marking his third term as the interim Athletic Director for the Gamecock athletic department.

“We are very excited to have Greg Seitz lead our athletic department,” Dr. Beehler said. “Greg is very well respected in the OVC, the NCAA and nationally, and has proven himself while serving in the interim role. We work very well together. With his excellent contacts, he will do an outstanding job leading our athletic department into its bright future. I’m pleased to remove the interim title and introduce him as our Athletic Director.” In Seitz’s two-plus years at the helm, the Gamecocks have seen unprecedented success on the field and in the classroom. The 201516 season saw JSU’s highest ever finish in the men’s Capital One Cup at No. 18, ranking the Gamecocks in the top 20 athletic departments among 347 NCAA Division I athletic programs. The 2016-17 season also saw JSU finish in the top 40 at No. 39, tied with Louisville, Harvard and South Carolina and 35 spots ahead of the next Ohio Valley Conference program. The 2015 football season saw the football team post it’s first-ever No. 1 ranking in school history, and earn the No. 1 National seed in the FCS Playoffs before advancing to JSU’s first Division I National Championship Game appearance. The Gamecocks set more than 50 school records and ranked in the top three in attendance at the FCS level after hosting threestraight home playoff games. One year later, The Gamecocks reached that No. 1 national ranking again on the gridiron before entering the FCS Playoff as the No. 3 National Seed.

In the classroom, the Gamecock studentathletes posted an impressive 3.10 cumulative grade-point average for last year, marking the fifth-straight year the student-athletes have achieved at least a 3.0 cumulative GPA.

Additionally, 11 of the 17 sports at Jax State posted a team grade point average higher than a 3.0.

Seitz has been with JSU since 1993, when he began working as assistant sports information director. In 1999, he became Sports Information Director and was promoted to Associate Athletic Director in 2002, before being promoted to Senior Associate Athletic Director in 2011. “I am extremely humbled and honored to have the opportunity to serve as the Athletic Director at Jacksonville State,” Seitz said. “I would like to thank President Beehler, the Board of Trustees and the entire Jax State family for their trust and faith in me as we continue to move the athletic department forward. It is an opportunity that I do not take for granted, and I will work hard every day to ensure that we continue to be successful, both in the classroom and on the fields and courts of competition.” During his term as interim and Athletic Director, the JSU football team has enjoyed a rise to national prominence. The Gamecocks are unbeaten in Ohio Valley Conference play over the past three years, claiming three-straight outright titles and automatic bids into the FCS Playoffs. During the 2014-15 athletic year, both the Jacksonville State men’s and women’s athletics teams were recognized in the final Capital One Cup standings, which honor the nation’s best Division I athletic programs. The Gamecock men’s team finished 61st, while the women finished 71st out of 347 NCAA Division I athletic programs.

Seitz has been instrumental in many of the facility upgrades at Jacksonville State, including renovations at Rudy Abbott Field, Pete Mathews Coliseum and the lobby of the football field house. Seitz was also involved in the design and addition of the football stadium, and the recent softball stadium and dressing room expansion. In the summer of 2016, Seitz unveiled plans for a $7.5 million renovation to JSU’s Baseball Stadium, Rudy Abbott Field. The project will www.JSUGamecockSports.com

be completed in time for the 2018 season and will include a 1,000-seat spectator grand stand with a shade canopy, an elevated, shaded entertainment or hospitality deck and service amenities, a new state-of-the-art press box to include radio and television broadcast booths, and a game operations center. The summer of 2017 saw Seitz and the Board of Trustees release their plan to install new state-of-the-art high definition video boards in Burgess-Snow Field, Rudy Abbott Field and University Field, while also placing new scoreboards at the JSU Soccer Field and the JSU Tennis Courts.

Also in 2017, Seitz announced an extension of a 14-year partnership between JSU Athletics and adidas, securing the Portland, Ore., based company as the Gamecocks’ official athletic apparel and footwear brand through the 2021-22 season. “Greg has worked tirelessly for a number of years in the athletic department at JSU, and also worked with the NCAA and AHSAA on several projects,” said Mr. Thomas Dedrick, chairman of the Athletic Committee of the JSU Board of Trustees. “In each capacity, Greg has earned the respect of both coaches and administrators. We feel that the work that he has done speaks volumes, and the knowledge of the University and its culture made Greg the best person for the job.” Seitz has served on the NCAA Men’s Final Four Media Coordinator team for the last seven years and was named to the NCAA FCS Football Committee in 2016. He also serves as a site representative for the NCAA during the Division I Baseball Regionals and Super Regionals.

He has also worked numerous NCAA Championships and Alabama High School Athletic Association events over the last 24 years. In 2002, he became the first SID elected as President of the Alabama Sports Writers Association and currently serves as the organization’s secretary and treasurer.
