Even for students who don’t wind up majoring in music in college or pursuing a career as a musician, the skills they gain by participating in orchestra will serve them well throughout their lives. The mission was to provide a superior music experience to talented high school musicians. Harold Finch conducted the first concert on November 14, 1947, at Orchestra Hall.

DIRECTORS’ LETTER Welcome to CYSO’s 2012-2013 Annual Report! For 66 years, CYSO has been a leader in the field of youth and music education and the 2012-2013 season did not disappoint. As our mission states, we continue to ADVANCE and inspire the musical and personal development of young musicians by making a commitment to give each student the opportunity they desire by making programs affordable and financial aid accessible. The 2012-2013 season started off with a collaboration with the multitalented Justin Timberlake at the Ryder Cup. The Noteworthy Night 2013 followed with a program featuring the music of The Beatles and our season closed with a unique program of the music from the film 2001: A Space Odyssey, which was performed at Symphony Center’s Orchestra Hall, as well as the Jay Pritzker Pavilion at Millennium Park.

OF NOTE 2012 RYDER CUP PGA TOURNAMENT During the Ryder Cup Opening Ceremony on September 27, our Encore Chamber Orchestra accompanied actor Justin Timberlake during his opening performance as first-ever Team Ambassador for the United States.
JOSHUA SIMONDS APPOINTED NEW EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR Joshua Simonds was named executive director to continue the organization’s long-standing mission of providing the highest caliber of classical music training to Chicago-area students ages 7 to 18.

Prior to becoming the executive director, Simonds worked for nine seasons (2003-2012) as CYSO’s general manager. Under his leadership, CYSO expanded its programs, created new orchestras, more than doubled student enrollment and increased earned revenue. He then held the executive director role with the DC Youth Orchestra Program before returning to CYSO to assume his current role in June 2013.
The orchestra also performed the music for the famous Ryder Cup procession of the American and European teams and dignitaries. During the closing ceremony on September 30, Encore performed the Star Spangled Banner with Chicago Blackhawks’ national anthem singer Jim Cornelison and the European anthem with Scottish violinist and champion for music education Nicola Benedetti.

THE 2013 NOTEWORTHY NIGHT ANNUAL GALA CELEBRATION CYSO’s annual gala was the most successful fundraiser in the organization’s history with over 300 guests, including Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel, who was also a 2013 Note of Excellence Honoree. Guests enjoyed listening to CYSO musicians play selections by The Beatles, along with cocktails, passed hors d’oeuvres, silent and live auctions and an elegant dinner. Thanks to this event and the community’s support, CYSO raised more than $255,000 for its music training, education and engagement programs!

With the support of our golfers and corporate sponsors, the 2013 whOle in One Outing™ raised more than $22,000 for the Music Pathways community engagement program.

COMPOSER-IN-RESIDENCE PROGRAM In 2012-2013, CYSO completed a three-year Composer-In-
Residence program with Joel Puckett. Mr. Puckett created original works for CYSO’s Preparatory Strings, Concert Orchestra and Symphony Orchestra, which included the double concerto for clarinet, flute and orchestra, Concerto Duo. This piece was premiered by brothers Anthony McGill [principal clarinet, Metropolitan Opera Orchestra] and Demarre McGill [principal flute, The Seattle Symphony] at Chicago’s Orchestra Hall.

HONORING RICHARD S. OLDBERG In May 2013, the CYSO Alumni Association awarded the Note of Excellence Award for Outstanding Achievement by a CYSO Alumnus to Richard S. Oldberg. Mr. Richard Oldberg played the French horn in the (then) Youth Orchestra of Greater Chicago from 1952 through 1956 under Music Directors Désiré Defauw and Dudley Powers. He attended Harvard University where he conducted the Harvard Opera Guild’s famous production of Strauss’ Die Fledermaus. Upon graduating summa cum laude from Northwestern University,
he joined the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, where he spent more than 30 years working with many great conductors, including Fritz Reiner, Sir George Solti, Zubin Mehta, James Levine, Leonard Bernstein and Daniel Barenboin. Previous winners of the Note of Excellence Award for Outstanding Achievement by a CYSO Alumnus: • Laurie Anderson, 1965 • Anthony McGill, 1994 • Demarre McGill, 1992
After retiring from the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Mr. Oldberg moved to Colorado, where he played with the Midland Odessa Symphony and Chorale (TX), the Fresno Philharmonic (CA), and the Boulder Philharmonic (CO). Since then, he has turned to conducting, and is the Conductor of the Boulder Ballet and has also conducted the Boulder Philharmonic (CO). Mr. Oldberg continues to teach and is well-known and highly respected by students, teachers and conductors. Mr. Oldberg credits CYSO for the start it gave him in a very long and successful career.
ALUMNI ASSOCIATION The CYSO Alumni Association offered some wonderful benefits to its members, including receptions at Orchestra Hall and an open reading for alumni alongside Symphony Orchestra members. GET WITH THE PROGRAM CYSO’S CORE ENSEMBLE PROGRAMS SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA Internationally recognized as one of the foremost youth orchestras, CYSO’s Symphony Orchestra is comprised of the most talented and dedicated student musicians from the Chicago area. Under the leadership of Music Director Allen Tinkham, Symphony Orchestra students have the opportunity to hone their skills while performing the most advanced orchestral repertoire alongside exciting new works by contemporary composers. Since its first season in 1946, CYSO’s Symphony Orchestra has achieved international recognition for its excellence and innovation in orchestral performance. Among its honors are eleven ASCAP awards for adventurous programming; three Illinois Council of Orchestras Youth Orchestra of the Year awards; two Illinois Council of Orchestras Programming of the Year awards; broadcasts on National Public Radio and WFMT; and thirteen international tours to the music capitals of Central and Western Europe, Asia and South America with plans to tour China in June, 2014.

Their season includes weekly rehearsals, sectionals, a concerto competition, an audition seminar, and concerts in some of the area’s most renowned venues. In addition to its regular season concerts, the Concert Orchestra performs two education concerts as a part of CYSO’s Music Pathways program and does a reading session of student works by participants in CYSO’s Composition Seminar. During the 2012-13 season, Concert Orchestra performed at Northwestern University’s Pick-Staiger Concert Hall, the University of Chicago’s Logan Center for the Arts, Northeastern Illinois University and Symphony Center’s Orchestra Hall.
The Symphony Orchestra’s 2012-13 season featured performances in Symphony Center’s Orchestra Hall and Millennium Park’s Jay Pritzker Pavilion, as well as community concerts at Lincoln Park High School in Chicago and Neuqua Valley High School in Naperville. The orchestra also collaborated with Roosevelt University’s CCPA Conservatory Chorus & Chorale. CONCERT ORCHESTRA Concert Orchestra students, predominantly high school aged musicians, have the opportunity to perform advanced orchestral repertoire and new works by contemporary composers under the

CYSO’S CORE ENSEMBLE PROGRAMS DEBUT ORCHESTRA Led by Associate Conductor Terrance Malone Gray, the Debut Orchestra provides predominantly middle school aged student musicians with their first exposure to high-level full orchestra training. The Debut Orchestra season is comprised of weekly rehearsals, sectionals and performances, including two education concerts for CPS students in collaboration with the International Music Foundation. Debut Orchestra students also participate in the Civic Orchestra of Chicago’s innovative mentoring program, MusiCorps®, which includes sectionals with Civic Orchestra members. During the 2012-13 season, the Debut Orchestra performed at the Chicago Cultural Center, Northeastern Illinois University and Northwestern University’s Pick-Staiger Concert Hall. PREPARATORY STRINGS Under the direction of Director of String Ensembles Daniella Valdez, Preparatory Strings provides string orchestra training to predominantly elementary

Weekly rehearsals focus on technique, ensemble performance skills, basic string repertoire and music theory. The Preparatory Strings 2012-13 season included two performances at Northeastern Illinois University and Northwestern University’s Pick-Staiger Concert Hall. ACCELERANDO STRINGS Under the direction of Director of String Ensembles Daniella Valdez, Accelerando Strings provides string orchestra training to high school aged student musicians. Accelerando Strings students performed their regular 2012-13 season concerts at Roosevelt University’s Ganz Hall and the Fine Arts Building’s Curtiss Hall and did a community concert at Roald Amundsen High School in Chicago. They also participated in the Civic Orchestra of Chicago’s mentoring program, MusiCorps®, which includes sectionals with Civic Orchestra members.

CYSO’s SUPPLEMENTAL PROGRAMS ENCORE CHAMBER ORCHESTRA Encore Chamber Orchestra is a specialized training and performance orchestra for selected student musicians from the Symphony Orchestra who aspire to be professional musicians. Led by Music Director Allen Tinkham, Encore has amazed audiences throughout the Chicago area. Encore students performed their regular 2012-2013 season concerts at the University of Chicago’s brand new Logan Center for the Performing Arts, Harold Washington Library’s Pritzker Auditorium and presented a special performance at Chicago’s Racquet Club.
AMBASSADORS The CYSO Ambassadors program is a part of Music Pathways, CYSO’s music engagement program in Chicago Public Schools. Ambassadors provide training in advanced musicianship and specialized leadership to selected Concert Orchestra students through the study and performance of chamber music. The selected students form chamber ensembles based on the instrument families, then create their own performance-demonstrations to present at each of the CPS schools that participate in the Music Pathways program.
CHAMBER MUSIC CYSO’s Chamber Music program, under the direction of Dr. Donald DeRoche, is a selective program open to students participating in CYSO’s Symphony Orchestra and Concert Orchestra who are interested in training in the art of small ensemble playing. The ensemble curriculum is comprehensive and includes weekly professional coaching, two CYSO Chamberpalooza recitals and other special performance opportunities.
MUSIC THEORY & COMPOSITION SEMINAR CYSO’s Music Theory classes are designed to create a working knowledge of written theory and aural skills that improve students’ capacity to understand and perform music at a higher level. The program features Intermediate and Advanced Theory courses available to students in CYSO’s Debut Orchestra, Accelerando Strings and Concert Orchestra.
The ensembles also have the opportunity to participate in CYSO’s Masterclass Series when the masterclass features professional chamber groups and to compete in various national and regional competitions. CYSO Chamber Music ensembles have recently performed for First Lady Michelle Obama, Mayor Rahm Emmanuel, the 2012 Nobel Laureates, and perform regularly on the Introductions series on WFMT, Chicago’s Classical Radio Station.
CYSO’s Composition Seminar, available to Symphony Orchestra and Concert Orchestra students, provides student composers with the opportunity to develop their compositional voice through improvisation, listening exercises, score analysis, historical analysis and private composition lessons. All Composition Seminar student works are read and recorded by a professional chamber ensemble during a session in the fall. In the spring, CYSO’s Concert Orchestra reads and records short orchestral pieces by the student composers.

MUSIC PATHWAYS Did you know CYSO has extended its reach to 2,500 Chicago Public School students and educators through the Music Pathways program? CYSO’s Music Pathways program focuses on engaging the Chicago community through several components: IN-SCHOOL RESIDENCY CYSO’s Music Pathways In-School Residency Program serves the diverse Chicago Public School community by engaging in multi-year partnerships with neighborhood elementary schools. Music Pathways provides classroom teachers with handson professional development workshops that focus on integrating music with their curriculums. Students attend several engaging educational concerts and perform in final presentations. Through these components, Music Pathways strives to encourage instrumental music training and a life-long love of music among thousands of Chicago youth. In 2012-2013, CYSO partnered with: • Gale Elementary Community Academy • Goodlow Elementary Magnet School • Holden Elementary School • Sheridan Elementary Math & Science Academy • Westcott Elementary
COMMUNITY CONCERTS During the season, CYSO plans concerts that bring its ensembles to various venues throughout the Chicago area. Community Concerts are free and open to the public, and allow local residents who may not be able to attend the concerts downtown to enjoy performances by CYSO’s ensembles. Community Concerts also are programmed with special additions that actively engage the audience. In 2012-2013, CYSO performed at Lincoln Park High School, Nequa Valley High School and Amundsen High School. PRIVATE LESSON PROGRAM CYSO offers need-based financial assistance for private lessons to its current orchestra students.
