John Muir Health is adding a new Outpatient Center in Walnut Creek. The center, at 1450 Treat Blvd., is scheduled to open in early 2014 and will house primary care doctors; specialists; an Urgent Care Center; and patient education, laboratory and imaging services—all in one central location. Offering many different services under one roof will provide more convenience for you and allow us to better work as a team to coordinate your care. FYI: If you’re interested in volunteer opportunities, visit johnmuirhealth.com/volunteers.

Reassurance for Student Athletes and Their Parents Pilot program: cardiac screenings According to research, 56 percent of sudden deaths in student athletes are attributable to cardiovascular diseases. This spring, John Muir Health offered free cardiac screenings to more than 130 student athletes at De La Salle High School. The screenings included a blood pressure check; electrocardiogram (EKG); and an echocardiogram, if needed. The screening was patterned after those required of competitive athletes in Europe and the Olympics, and was designed to provide an added level of care and reassurance for athletes and their parents. After a successful pilot, John Muir Health will look to offer the screening program to other local high schools in the future.

Kegels 101 DIY for bladder problems? If you suffer from bladder leaks (urinary incontinence), you may find relief using Kegel exercises, which help to strengthen muscles that support the bladder. Here are tips from medical experts on this simple exercise: • The key to doing Kegel exercises correctly is to properly locate the pelvic floor muscles. While urinating, attempt to stop the flow of urine. The muscles you use to stop the flow of urine are your pelvic floor muscles. Learn to contract these muscles at will by stopping the flow of urine repeatedly. If you find that tightening the pelvic floor muscles slows the stream of urine but doesn’t stop it, you have found the right muscles, but you have also learned that they are weak. Use the method of stopping and starting the flow of urine only occasionally and temporarily though, as doing this regularly may eventually lead to urinary dysfunction. • When you’ve found the right way to contract the pelvic muscles, lie down with your knees bent or sit in a supportive chair with your feet on the ground and squeeze your pelvic floor muscles for 10 seconds and then relax for 10 seconds. • Repeat this exercise 10 to 20 times per session. Try to do this at least one to three times a day—while at your desk, watching TV, etc. Kegel exercises are effective only when done regularly; the more you exercise, the more likely it is the exercises will help. It takes time to strengthen the pelvic muscles, experts say, but most women notice improvement after just a few weeks.

FAQs: Children's Health

alth When Is It Time for Kids to Have Solo Doctor Visits?

R

eadiness for one-on-one visits with a doctor varies from child to child, but the preteen years offer a prime opportunity, according to Dr. Marian Birdsall, a pediatrician at John Muir Health. “I call it ‘time alone’ with the doctor, not ‘solo visits,’ because parents are still involved at some point,” Birdsall says. “I usually establish it as part of routine checkups when kids are around 12 or 13.” The preteen and teen years are a unique stage in development, when a child’s sense of independence is emerging, she adds. “Time alone honors that and builds trust with physicians, which we hope will last a lifetime. What really makes a difference is when adolescents understand that their conversation with their doctor is private. That’s when they tend to relax and really open up.” Parents can help the process by making sure to take kids in for their annual checkup and by chatting about the visit in a positive light beforehand. Letting kids know what to expect can also be helpful, as can suggesting they write down two to three questions to ask their doctor. “Remember, the way kids treat their bodies and minds as teens can impact them long term,” cautions Birdsall. “It’s a good time to address healthy good habits that they can carry into adulthood.”

FAQs: Children's Health

Are My Child’s Frequent Stomachaches a Sign of Something Serious? Q&A with Dr. Sabina Ali, who specializes in pediatric gastroenterology, hepatology and nutrition at John Muir Health and Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital at Stanford

HOW COMMON ARE STOMACHACHES IN KIDS? SA: Very—about 10 to 15 percent of kids have repeated episodes of abdominal pain. Usually, these stomachaches go away on their own and may not need a doctor’s evaluation. WHEN SHOULD PARENTS CALL A DOCTOR ABOUT THEIR CHILD’S STOMACHACHE? SA: Consult a doctor if you’re concerned about your child’s symptoms or there’s vomiting, blood in the stool, diarrhea, constant abdominal pain or weight loss. WHAT, EXACTLY, IS IBS AND IBD? SA: IBS is irritable bowel syndrome, and it simply involves increased sensitivity in the gastrointestinal [GI] tract. It can strike at any age but often starts in the teen years. Treatment aims to relieve the symptoms: stomach pain, fullness, gas, constipation or diarrhea. These symptoms are also telltale signs of IBD, inflammatory bowel disease. IBD involves actual inflammation in the GI tract and is a serious condition. It can run in families; an estimated 1 in 4 patients diagnosed with IBD is under age 20. Having IBD brings increased risk for intestinal and colon cancer, but the bigger concern for kids is poor growth. The good news: IBD can be effectively managed with medications and treatments.

THE 4-1-1 ON STROKE When it comes to treating brain attack, all hospitals aren’t created equal THE PROBLEM • What causes stroke: Stroke, or brain attack, occurs when the blood supply to part of your brain is interrupted or severely reduced. It results from a blood clot (ischemic stroke, about 87 percent of cases) or blood vessel rupture (hemorrhagic stroke). • Who it strikes: Anyone, at any age. Stroke is one of the nation’s leading causes of death and disability. • Why prompt treatment is crucial: When brain tissue is deprived of oxygen and blood, brain cells die within minutes. The longer treatment is delayed, the more damage is done.

Think FAST When You See Signs of Stroke Face: Ask the person to smile. Does one side of the face droop? Arms: Ask the person to raise both arms. Does one arm drift downward? Speech: Ask the person to repeat a simple phrase. Is their speech slurred or strange? Time: Call 9-1-1 immediately if you observe any of these signs (note the time when they first appear). Source: National Stroke Association

JOHN MUIR HEALTH’S ADVANCED TREATMENTS • Most common: A clot-busting drug called tPA. When given through a vein, it must be administered within about three hours after stroke symptoms appear. • Leading-edge clot busters/removers: In select cases, John Muir Health physicians can deliver tPA directly to the area where the stroke is occurring, by threading a catheter through an artery into the brain. In mechanical clot retrieval, a tiny device is maneuvered into the brain via a catheter and used to physically remove the blockage. Both procedures must be performed as soon as possible. • New at John Muir Health: TeleStroke Program, two-way video in our patient rooms and the ER, allowing 24/7 monitoring by specially trained nurses and consultation by neurologists. TOP-QUALITY RATINGS • What sets apart services at John Muir Medical Center (Walnut Creek and Concord): “Triple Gold“ for excellence in stroke care (two of only three California hospitals), the Gold Plus award for quality and TARGET-Stroke Honor Roll recognition for the ability to give tPA to patients within 60 minutes of arrival. We offer 24/7 availability of state-of-the-art procedures and facilities (including neurosurgery ICU); experienced, highly skilled staff (including interventional neuroradiologists and neurovascularcertified neurologists who specialize in stroke); and comprehensive services. • How your family benefits: John Muir Health’s exceptional care is nearby—when every second counts.

Q: WHAT RESOURCES AT JOHN MUIR HEALTH ARE AVAILABLE TO THE GENERAL PUBLIC? GC: Our team of certified diabetes educators offers presentations throughout the community on request. We also host an annual free community event in the fall titled “Diabetes Dialogue.” The monthly cardiac nutrition classes, offered by nutrition services, can also be very helpful to people with diabetes.
