JUMP THROUGH HOOPS | GET ACCEPTED

PREP & ADVICE

How to get accepted! Mastering the grad school application process. Applying to graduate school or a professional program can be tedious and overwhelming. The key is to familiarize yourself with the process and prepare your application early. Doing so will help you become a competitive applicant. In addition to your general application, the following is required as part of your application. Written statement Graduate schools and professional programs require a written statement as part of your application. Your statement will give the admission committee an idea of who you are, separate from your grades and test scores. Requirements for the written statement vary, so make sure you’re aware of the specific components required from each program and school you’re applying to. In addition to your achievements, academic goals, and career goals, you’ll need to identify interesting and distinct topics about yourself, such as: personal influences, compelling learning experiences, overcoming loss, meaningful travel, and volunteer work. Schedule time to focus on your statement, give yourself a few months to complete it and have a couple of people read your statement to make sure your final draft is clear, concise, and tailored. Transcripts

Graduate and professional programs require applicants to submit two to three letters of recommendation. A recommendation letter gives information about you, your accomplishments, personal qualities, and experiences that aren’t found in the rest of your application. It explains how you’re the perfect candidate for the program you’re applying to. Consider asking a faculty member, administrator, internship educator, or supervisor to be your referee. Provide your referee with the information required in the recommendation letter well ahead of time, so you cover all your bases and make it easier for your referee to create a well-crafted letter. Curriculum vitae A curriculum vitae (or CV) is an academic resumé that highlights your scholarly accomplishments. Writing a CV is similar to writing a resumé. Just like a personal statement, writing a CV can be a time-consuming process. Take a look at examples and guides online to ease the CV struggle. Standardized test scores Most graduate schools and professional programs require standardized exams, such as the GRE, LSAT, MCAT, and GMAT. The preparation for these exams is crucial, so write your exam early. The registration deadlines for these exams are well in advance of the actual exam date, and some are only offered a few times a year, so make sure you’re well aware of these dates. Interviews Interviews are becoming popular for applications to programs like law, dentistry, and medicine. Do some research to find out the types of questions you’ll be asked. Make an appointment with an advisor at your career centre to set up a mock interview. That way, you’ll have an opportunity to have a practice run and get feedback on your performance.

JOBPOSTINGS.CA | GRAD GUIDE

Universities require official transcripts as part of your application. This requirement means you’ll need to request your transcripts from the office of the registrar from each school you attended. Do so well in advance, as schools will need time to process your request and send the transcripts. By beginning this process early, you’ll have the time and opportunity to do the necessary follow-up and request additional transcripts if necessary. Keep in mind there’s also a fee related to ordering transcripts.

PLANNING AHEAD | LOOKING INSIDE

PREP & ADVICE

Words Midfa Chowdhury // Images Bernard Bodo

Is grad school right for you? What you should consider before committing to grad school. Making the decision to head to grad school is easier for some than it is for others. Finding the answer requires soul searching and an assessment of your overall situation. If you’re on the fence when it comes to grad school, we hope this will help you make a decision. Mark Simpson, the coordinator of the Business Administration program at the George Brown College, School of Management, says that it all begins with questioning your motivation behind going to grad school in the first place. He suggests each student considering more education to ask yourself: “Why do you want to do this?” “People are coming in for all sorts of different reasons,” he says. “Everything from building upon what they already [have] to adding a specific specialization. Some might want to even change their field, like for getting into a sports management program.”

“You might find the degree to be very general, or from a college background that you did not really specify in,” he says. The purpose of grad school is to lend you more knowledge to continue to transition into a career in the field. In addition, it helps to enhance your overall educational background and resumé.

Once you have figured these two points, it’s time to execute. Find a grad school program that’s the right fit for you but, at the same time, one that will work with your current schedule—whether you’re already starting your career or starting a family. For instance, some grad school programs are primarily taught online, so it can help you from worrying about additional costs for transportation, housing, and food. You can complete the course quickly from the comfort of your own home. (Just remember you’ll need lots of self-discipline!) Simpson even makes the parallel to use a program within George Brown College. “We have a data analytics program, and it’s all online. This can even add to making school more convenient and affordable, considering that not a lot of time is being occupied.” Also, don’t forget that having a strong character is important. “You definitely have to be motivated because it [requires] commitment,” says Simpson. He continues to remind that grad school is no simple task. If you decide to go ahead with grad school, be confident and resilient. You know at the end of the experience you’ll be rewarded with more knowledge to take your career further.

JOBPOSTINGS.CA | GRAD GUIDE

Next, it’s best to analyze your credentials. “Usually a person considers grad school because of credentials or because it’s going to advance you in your career in some way,” says Simpson, adding students may find their recently completed degrees or diplomas as insufficient to advance in their careers effectively.

The priority goes to your motivation to determine why you would go to grad school altogether. Next ask yourself, “What can grad school add that will help complement what I know?”

MBA ADVICE | FROM THE TRENCHES

PREP & ADVICE

Career advice for MBA grads from MBA grads Follow these tips to set yourself up for success after graduation.

Assuming you chose a great school, getting an MBA has statistically proven to pay off in the long run, but it’s also true that an MBA isn’t a magic career pill. After reaching out to our network of MBA grads, they shared their experiences and insights about job hunting before and after you graduate with your MBA. When is the right time to start job hunting? The right time depends on your major. If you’re entering a consulting or finance major, recruiting firms will greet you the second you arrive on campus (again, depending on the school you select). Some companies even recruit during the summer before formal classes even begin. With this in mind, be ready to hit the ground running when it comes to your job hunt and be strategic about when you study core topics to better present yourself to recruiters. • Take a summer or online course before your MBA to warm up to the topics you’re going to study so that you have more time to network and interview, instead of cram for overly difficult early exams. • Schedule your core business courses during your first semester, so you are more presentable and confident when entering the first round of internship interviews that happen around the end of that semester. • If you’re not majoring in finance or consulting, schedule your core business courses after your first semester to avoid any unnecessary competition.

Convert your resume to an ‘Executive’ format Your MBA resume is supposed to present you as someone who is ready for managerial to executive level roles and responsibilities, so make sure your resume reflects that. Befriend MBA program alumni and copy their resume formats. Going forward, your resume will become your calling card more

When internships really matter For finance and consulting firms especially, most recruit firstyear MBA students, then source their full-time hires from that pool of interns. Knowing this, do whatever it takes to secure a quality internship at a quality firm within your first semester; doing so will significantly improve your odds of employment after graduation. These internships will last six to 10 weeks and act as an extended interview for future employment after graduation. To prepare, reach out to second-year MBA students to ask for presentation and interview tips to succeed in your interactions with recruiters from your top pick companies. Build relationships with as many executive recruiters as possible Along with the in-house company recruiters who visit your campus, executive recruiters (ERs) will also make the rounds. Visit your career centre or network with second-year MBAs to get introduced to as many of these ERs as possible within your first semester. Take their calls. Always help them. Always offer referrals to your friend network if asked. The favour will be returned with quality interviews. Networking After getting an internship and keeping up with your grades in your first year, your top priority must be building your network. In fact, be sure to remove any shyness from your system before applying to an MBA program; otherwise, your experience will be wasted. Be prepared to attend after-hours social events a few times per week. Aggressively build real friendships with the top and most influential class peers. Consider joining school clubs and associations. Be strategic about the people you spend your time with as the relationships you build will support you professionally over the years to come.

JOBPOSTINGS.CA | GRAD GUIDE

• Take as many interviews as you can secure. Don’t limit yourself to a ‘dream’ company.

than ever. Set a reminder in your calendar, so you don’t go six months without updating it.

FINANCIAL LITERACY | DEFINING ITS VALUE

PREP & ADVICE

Words Craig Sebastiano // Images Damir Khabirov

Financial literacy as a student Money is hard to come by as a student. Be in-the-know with where your money is going. Financial literacy has long been a topic of conversation in Canada. While there’s been a push to include financial literacy classes in public schools, post-secondary students still receive little financial education while, ironically, going into thousands of dollars in student debt. As a result, more post-secondary students are taking financial education into their own hands. Here are four reasons to move financial literacy atop your list. Budget for a fixed income If you’re like most Canadian post-secondary students, you’ve applied for student loans to cover some or all of your tuition and living expenses in school. As a student loan holder, you’ve likely run out of money before you reached the end of your term at least once in your academic career Learning how to track your spending will teach you how to effectively budget for the semester and help you stop the feastand-famine cycle. Add up your monthly expenses and the number you end up with is the minimum amount of money you need to allocate from your student loans each month.

If you don’t have enough money to cover the whole semester, now you know in advance. You can find alternative sources of income, including scholarships, grants, bursaries, a part-time job, or the funds of mom and dad. Understand student loans For many young people, student loans represent the largest

If you’re an average student in Canada, you’ll graduate with $28,000 in student loan debt. While student loan payments may seem very far down the road, it’s important to have a clear understanding of how your payments will affect your life post-graduation. Build savings for retirement When applied to investing, the magic of compound interest is the strongest when you have an extended timeframe. You can think of compound interest as an “interest on interest,” meaning your savings will be growing at a much faster rate. You can start out by putting money in a high-interest savings account or a GIC. Or you can take on additional risk and invest in a balanced mutual fund. However, the more risk you take, the greater the potential for higher returns as well as losses. Despite the risks, stocks should be in your portfolio. Although it might seem silly to save money while taking on debt as a student, think about investing as a way to take the pressure off your future self. The longer you invest, the less you need to save overall. Financial literacy affects everything As a student, it’s important to be financial literate because money permeates almost every decision you’ll make in life. Whether you’re picking your major, choosing between paid and unpaid summer internships, deciding to live with roommates or alone, or applying for your first credit card, the more you know about your money and how to manage it, the more comfortable you’ll be.

JOBPOSTINGS.CA | GRAD GUIDE

Once you receive your student loan instalment, you’ll be able to calculate, using your budget, whether you’ll have enough money to cover your whole semester of school. Consider saving the leftover money to cover future terms when your student loans might not be as plentiful.

debt they’ll take on for many years, yet shockingly few students know the extent of their debt, their interest rate, or even what their monthly payments will look like after graduation.

SCHOOL FAIRS | THEY CAN HELP

PREP & ADVICE

Words Gabriela Panza-Beltrandi // Images Narin Nonthamand

How to become a career fair pro Top strategies for making the most out of your job fair experience. Career fairs. They’re big. They’re loud. They’re crowded. And the biggest employers all seem to have the longest lineups. How are you supposed to stand out?

A pro tip is to tailor a cover letter and resumé specifically for the job. Even if you don’t, it’s advised to bring at least 30 copies of your resumé in a protective folder to hand out.

Well, according to Elana Wall, Regional Marketing Head, North America, for Quacquarelli Symonds (QS), a company that runs fairs like the QS World MBA Tour and QS World Grad School Tour, “First impressions are critical, and you can really make an impact on a potential employer by being friendly, approachable and professional. They’ll remember someone who stands out, so make sure to ask relevant questions – treat it like a mini-interview!”

Network your way

Interviews!? We feel your anxiety rising. But don’t worry, we’ve got you. Career fairs can be intimidating, especially if you’re unemployed. But when you find yourself packed inside a giant room with a thousand other unemployed people, it’s hard not to feel small and drowned out. That’s why we asked Wall to share a few more tips to make sure you not only stand out at these career fairs but get a job offer from them as well. Appearance counts

You may not think of it at a career fair but, in addition to applying for jobs, fairs also give you great opportunities to make connections. “These days it’s all about building networks,” explains Mukherjee, who says it’s important to talk to as many people as you can. At career fairs, employers are set up at different booths. Applicants line up to get a chance to speak with potential employers, but time is limited for job seekers. Every second counts to stand out; this is why Wall advises that you, “be friendly and approachable and be willing to have a conversation with anyone you encounter. You never know who you might meet. Don’t be self-deprecating or overly-confident – strike a balance, and know your strengths. Have an elevator pitch prepared about the company/ role/industry – why you’re interested in them and why you’re a great fit for their organization.” Be open-minded

As for preparing to speak to employers, remember the Five P’s: Prior preparation prevents poor performance. Research companies beforehand and prepare what you’re going to say. Most career fairs have an online guide of the exhibits they will be showing, so do some preparation and learn what they are looking for in employees.

Finally, within 48 hours after the career fair ends, follow up with every recruiter where you made a connection to make sure they remember you. Send them an invite on Linkedin and customized thank you emails that highlight your interest to learn more about the opportunities they were offering at the fair.

One of the most important factors employers are looking for is how flexible you are. Wall says, “Be open-minded – you might not even know yet about what the perfect job is for you. Plan to have a lot of conversations and to learn about different opportunities, and how your skillset could suit something you never even considered before.”

JOBPOSTINGS.CA | GRAD GUIDE

Career fairs are like job interviews without an appointment and, as with any interview, leaving a strong impression starts with your outfit. “Err on the side of caution, and dress like you were attending an interview,” said Wall. “Ultimately, it does depend on the industry you’re interested in, but you can never go wrong with business attire, and it’s always better to be dressier than not. You want to make a good first impression, and not be remembered for looking too casual.”

PREP & ADVICE

Words Meghan Lafferty

Urban or Rural: What university style is right for your Masters/MBA Making the choice that’s right for you.

When selecting a university, location matters. Different locations are better suited for different individuals and for different degrees. You should consider these differences and weigh out the pros and cons before selecting the university you attend for your Masters or MBA. To help you decide what direction is the best fit for you, we spoke with a staff member from Ryerson University, in Toronto, and a staff member from Laurentian University, in Sudbury, Ontario. These two universities are in vastly different locations and show us what it is like to attend school in an urban and rural setting. Finding the perfect location for you

accomplish, rather than what you might enjoy for your nightlife. Choosing a location to fit your degree Sathaseevan pointed out that “some locations, such as Sudbury, are a researcher’s dream when looking at areas that cover mining, geology, indigenous culture, ecology, etc. Having these resources at your fingertips can enrich your educational experience.” She further advises making sure you educate yourself on what’s available around you. You may find that there are excellent opportunities for specific types of research or field studies available. In a location like Toronto, such as Ryerson, there are many available resources, but better suited for different areas of study. Mactavish reminds students that they can expect to “tap into world-class centres of media, technology, finance, politics, and healthcare, with endless possibilities for growth and discovery.” At Ryerson, their urban campus “is interwoven into the city’s fabric, with top restaurants, shopping, sports, theatre and performing arts venues just steps away.”

Ryerson, located in the heart of Toronto, offers an exciting and fast-moving atmosphere. If you choose an urban school like Ryerson, make sure a busy, bustling setting will jive well with your personality.

Both schools have a lot of resources to provide, but it’s up to you to decide which fits best with you and your academic interests.

On the other end of the spectrum, there’s Laurentian University in Sudbury, Ontario. We spoke with Stacy Sathaseevan, Graduate Studies Information Officer at Laurentian. As she pointed out, “You want to choose an atmosphere that is conducive to the way a person learns and offers unique experiences. The location will also play an important role, especially when it comes to research opportunities, funding, and exposure.”

Visit the campus

In other words, although an urban setting may appeal to you, it might not be the best choice for your learning style and degree ambitions. It’s important to focus on what you’re there to

Before making any lasting decisions, check out the campus for yourself—you should be able to gain a proper perspective on how the university will fit with you. Remember to keep in mind your personal preferences and what would be best for your area of study. There is no right or wrong choice; both are equally as important if you want to stay happy and focused during your stay. Just make sure you take your time when selecting; this campus will be your home for the next few years— make sure you enjoy every minute of what it has to offer.

JOBPOSTINGS.CA | GRAD GUIDE

When it comes to selecting a school, Jennifer Mactavish, Vice-Provost and Dean of Yeates School of Graduate Studies at Ryerson, told us, “Choose a location that reflects your values, your passions, offers opportunities for growth and encourages exploration during your studies. This will be your new home for the next while, so make sure it is a place that inspires you.”

THE GAME PLAN | SUCCESS AFTER GRAD SCHOOL

PREP & ADVICE

Words Darlene Morales

Survival 101: The Grad school edition School is a marathon, especially after your undergrad. Here’s to making it all the way to the end.

While your former undergrad classmates are working, earning money, and starting families, you’re up until the morning clutching an espresso and a research paper. That’s okay. You decided to pursue the road less travelled: the postgraduate road. This path will add a few years to your education, so you’ll need to learn to cope with the bumps. Luckily, we’ve got your back. Know what you want Have a game plan for after graduation: receiving your master’s degree or Ph.D. is fine and dandy, but closing your last textbook and finding yourself with zero insight into what you want to do is not going to get you far when it comes to finding that first, real, postgrad gig. Ben Rogul from Aon Hewitt says, “When I’m talking to new grads, and I ask them what they’re looking for after graduation, I’d say nine out of ten times they don’t know.” He says when graduates come to him and list off the skills and qualities they have, that’s great. But, as a recruiter, it’s frustrating. The key information he’s looking for is what the new graduate wants to do. Be well-versed in expectations

Take a chance and go abroad Consider going abroad for a semester to pursue your degree. In general, any experience travelling, studying, or working overseas—and being comfortable working in foreign environments—is always an attractive trait that employers look for. Be open to breaking out of the nest! Many university programs let students pursue a course-based masters and Ph.D. in a number of partner institutions around the world. If you have this opportunity, jump on it. If you’re worried about the expense, consider teaching English parttime as you study: this approach lets you travel, exposes you to new cultures, and allows you to meet new people. Keep an eye on the prize Grad school may require extra effort up front, but your effort will pay off in the end. “Survey research shows the higher the degree level you have, the higher your earnings are,” Phelps says. “This higher degree will even give you better job opportunities. And this credential really puts you at an advantage over other people who don’t have it.”

Marilyn Rose, dean of Graduate Studies at Brock, says that “graduate programs expect their students to work hard and spend a great deal of time mastering the discipline they have chosen to study … students have to be prepared to have little time left over for idleness or play.”

Earnings aside, the contacts you make can also help you land a job. “There’s no doubt that graduate studies offer many benefits in the area of social contacts that will pay off in the future,” Rose says. “Professors themselves are well-connected and can provide introductions or letters of reference—in fact, it’s part of their jobs to do so—for students who do well in their courses.”

Jenny Phelps, assistant dean and director of Graduate Enrollment Services at the University of British Columbia, says students will have to deliver better quality work. “The nature of

All-in-all, by the end of your postgrad, you’ll develop genuine professionalism, contacts, and knowledge to help you achieve your career goals.

MBA | WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

PROGRAMS

YOUR GUIDE TO THE MBAs Earning your MBA takes commitment, but it can lead to professional growth and a career. Do you have your sights on an MBA? Are you aiming to one day have the shiny title of VP or CEO? Well, before you get ahead of yourself, it’s important to know how you’ll get there. Weighing your options Before you jump into your postgrad, it’s important to first ask yourself some questions and weigh in whether an MBA is right for you. Develop an idea of what you want the MBA to do for you, says Liz Lemon-Mitchell, Director, Communications and Operations Faculty of Business Administration for the University of New Brunswick. “Whether you want to get a promotion, start a completely new career, or cross over to the “business” or leadership side of their current industry. You should know what knowledge, skills and competencies you need, and then find the program that offers these.”  An MBA is like taking on another job. And with the minimum of two years of work experience required at the University of Manitoba’s Asper School of Business MBA program, students must be able to handle work and school.

Deciding on your next steps You’ve gone back and forth with the possibilities, and all signs point to yes. Now it’s time to apply. In addition to the requirement of two years of work experience, students must also prepare to write their GMAT and maintain a high GPA.

And as an Asper MBA alumni, Elliott advises that women be encouraged to pursue an MBA education. “There’s a confidence that you personally get, but there’s also a confidence that the market has in you. From a female perspective, an MBA is just a fabulous asset for upward mobility for women in the marketplace.” Knowing what to expect As with any postgraduate program, you can expect a demanding course load which balances both settings in class and in the workplace. “We have a robust portfolio of industry partnerships which provides many opportunities for students to meet and work with experts,” says Lemon-Mitchell. “Many of our partners participate in our programs and courses, which means students can expect to have ample opportunities to test their knowledge in real business challenges and scenarios.” And over the long term, earning an MBA has the potential to help you stand apart and above your competition. Lemon-Mitchell adds, “Employers are looking for candidates who have academic credentials but who also know what they’re talking about in concrete ways. ... This type of learning (MBAs) helps students see how business works in the real world, and gives them confidence in their abilities to lead, make decisions and execute projects. It also gives them something real to talk to potential employers about; in other words, they can demonstrate how they own their knowledge.”

JOBPOSTINGS.CA | GRAD GUIDE

“It’s a commitment, and it’s demanding,” says Marci Elliott, executive director of the program. “I think there needs to be a clear understanding of the time commitment, and so that also means that your family and friends need to understand that commitment.”

“All MBA programs are going to challenge students to think differently than they have before and take on tasks they’ve never had to do before,” says Lemon-Mitchell. “A good program is going to take students out of their comfort zone and throw the world at them. ”

ENGINEERING | FROM ELECTRICAL TO CREATIVE

PROGRAMS

Words Megan Santos // Images Solis Images

EXERCISE YOUR ENGINEERING OPTIONS A master’s in engineering has many specializations. Which one will you choose?

Engineering is a big field when it comes to specialization. Should I focus on mechanical, civil, electric, or chemical? Should I begin my job search or acquire a higher education? These are all valid questions for an engineering hopeful. With so many choices, where will you go? Electrical and computer engineering “It’s just perfect for students who want to be in a specific area of technology, and at the same time don’t want to be bogged down by the parameters of the program like a master of science,” says Shahram Yousefi, associate head of the department of electrical and computer engineering (ECE) at Queen’s University. With the master of engineering’s handful of specializations, students in electrical and computer engineering have the chance to partake in internships or industry collaborations. Students have the option to work on a four-month project with either a faculty member or industry partner to gain more hands-on experience in the field.

And upon graduation, students have successfully been able to attain jobs, with many ECE career hotspots in the Ottawa and Toronto area. “A fraction of the students are coming from overseas and go back, and they’re equally successful where they come from, and some do stay in Canada. The absorption into the industry has been quite good.”

Working in engineering design is a job that requires equal parts of creativity and leadership. Dr. Robert Fleisig, Associate Professor, W Booth School of Engineering Practice and Technology, describes the master’s in engineering design program as an opportunity for students to specialize in three fields: product design, sustainable community infrastructure, and process and production systems. He adds, “Students learn by applying their design engineering knowledge in small interdisciplinary teams working on industrially-motivated and industrially-sponsored projects. Through this learning experience, students develop empathy, creativity, partner and client management, project management, critical thinking, and problem finding and problem-solving skills.”  By coming from multiple bachelor’s engineering disciplines, the interdisciplinary backgrounds prepare students for the workplace where their colleagues will likely come from different specializations. Master’s students roughly have a $15,000 salary advantage over bachelor’s graduates, but job acquisition is very much reliant on whether students are willing to move out of their comfort zones. From speaking with McMaster representatives, they say that engineering jobs are scattered all across Canada and if students focus on only staying in their home city, that may end up limiting their career options significantly. Overall, think clearly about why you want to enrol in a Masters of Engineering program and the competencies you want to attain or enhance. These masters programs will work with you to ensure you reach your goals.

JOBPOSTINGS.CA | GRAD GUIDE

“We emphasize a lot these days the importance of doing the industrial or internship because these in particular also build a connection,” he explains. “There’s something that’s added to the resumé that shows a bit of relevance to the industry.”

MED SCHOOL | STUDYING IN THE TROPICS

SUN, SAND, MED SCHOOL Taking your med school education in the Caribbean is a viable option for Canadian students. Any aspiring doctor in Canada knows how competitive it is to get into med school. With a long list of course prerequisites and credit hours—on top of the minimal intake in North American schools—many Canadians are turning to post-graduate schools in the Caribbean to pursue their doctoral dreams. Sunny St. Maarten “What we offer is a four-year MD program,” says Dr. Renu Agnihotri, president of the American University of Integrative Sciences, St. Maarten School of Medicine (AUIS). “It is divided into two years of basic sciences and two years of clinical sciences.” The program also has a huge North American presence. “Interestingly enough, about half of our students are Canadian,” says Dr. Agnihotri, adding that most students hear about the school through AUIS’s recruiters and website, referrals from peers, and word-of-mouth. While most med schools in North America have classes of 200– 300 students, AUIS strives to maintain much smaller classes with no more than 16 students. The smaller class sizes create an appeal for Canadians choosing to study in the Caribbean.

Grad school in Grenada Similar to AUIS, the medical curriculum at St. George’s University is a four-year program, with both onsite learning in Grenada and clinical training in North America. What’s also unique about the program is its studying opportunities in Newcastle, England.

“Students enjoy studying in England. They like the idea of further exposing themselves to another country’s method of teaching and practicing medicine.” And as medicine becomes more global, more Canadian students are finding themselves in classrooms outside North America. “With the mobility of the population and being able to travel from one end of the world to the other in one day, it really makes having that global medicine background beneficial,” says Ryan. Naturally, North American students would be drawn to attending a school closer to home had they been accepted. But Ryan notes that this past year a number of students declined their seats at their local colleges and universities to study abroad at St. George’s. The university is currently working on bringing more clinical opportunities to Canada. So far, St. George’s Canadian placements are only for electives—when students specialize in the medical field—which happens in the fourth year of the program. Although implementing the clinical portion of the program to Canada is still a work in progress, St. George’s continues to promote the university to the Canadian market digitally, as well as through a robust information session schedule. “Our biggest attraction is word of mouth. If students go in to see a doctor or are volunteering at a hospital, maybe the doctor is a St. George’s grad,” says Ryan. “I can stand in front of an audience and rattle off every stat, but if a graduate follows me, you can see the students sitting on the edge of their seats. When an alum tells his or her story of becoming a physician, they help tell our story as well.”

JOBPOSTINGS.CA | GRAD GUIDE

“What we’re striving to be is the Harvard of boutique medical schools in the Caribbean,” says Milo Pinckney, managing director at AUIS. “Our bottom line is that students travelling abroad to medical school becomes qualified candidates for a US or Canadian residency match, and that’s what we’re doing.”

“The program in Newcastle averages about 100 students per semester—out of that 100, 50–60 percent is Canadian,” says Bob Ryan, Dean of Admissions at St. George’s University.

Over the last 11 years, it has been my privilege to have helped hundreds of Canadian students achieve their dream of becoming physicians at Ross University School of Medicine (RUSM). It is no secret that there are more medical school hopefuls in Canada than there are available spots, and the competition for these spots is intense. For those students who are looking for medical school options outside of Canada, RUSM is a great pathway for them to pursue their passion for medicine. RUSM provides Canadian students with a North American medical school education, which allows our graduates to practice in the United States or Canada once they have passed the requisite licensing examinations. RUSM students fulfill their Basic Science requirements at our new medical sciences campus in Barbados before going to the United States for their clinical rotations alongside U.S. medical students. If they so choose, Canadian students also have the option of taking fourth-year electives in Canada. For students who study outside of North America, the bridge back can be much more difficult because they haven’t had that experience. Our students have that opportunity, and that really sets them up for success in their careers. Canadian students have been coming to RUSM throughout our 40-plus-year history, and we know what they need to succeed and how to support them. Throughout the University infrastructure, Canadian students will find support systems and staff members in place who will help with everything from their transition to first semester, to walking them through the process of taking

their medical licensure exams in the United States and Canada. We also have Canadian faculty whose doors are always open and who would welcome the opportunity to chat with a fellow Canadian – in English or French! And RUSM has a Canadian Student Association, which sets up everything from medical volunteer opportunities in Barbados to social events and fundraisers. It’s these kinds of support services that give Canadian students a real advantage and why they should choose RUSM as their first option outside of Canada. Speaking of success, Emma Cronk ’19, is one of our Canadian rock star students who just went through the © MATCH (National Resident Matching Program) process in the U.S. and secured a residency in her chosen specialty of Family Medicine at Emory University in Atlanta, GA. Emma was admitted to RUSM through MERP, our Medical Education Readiness Program in Miramar, FL, which really gave her a leg up when she started her first semester at RUSM. After her residency, she plans to do a fellowship in Non-Operation Primary Care Sports Medicine. She is just one of hundreds of similar success stories of dedicated Canadian students who would let nothing stand in their way of becoming a physician, and who came to RUSM to fulfill their dream. If you are such a student, I invite you to reach out to me today, and together we’ll see if RUSM is the right school for you to fulfill your passion for medicine. Your road to residency starts here.

MONEY NEVER SLEEPS | INTERNATIONALLY

PROGRAMS

An international business postgrad can build your cross-cultural management skills.

As the Canadian market becomes increasingly more globalized, acquiring a postgraduate education in international business management can give you the tools and knowledge you need to do business overseas. “The benefit with being in this kind of program is that it’s just the way business is being done these days,” says Janice Brown, coordinator of the international business management program at Seneca College in Toronto. “It’s done globally.” From master’s degrees to college certificates, students have several postgraduate opportunities to specialize in international management. “Having many different options out there is great,” says Dr. Pedro Márquez, dean of the faculty of management at Royal Roads University (RRU) in Victoria, BC. “If a student wants to go to China for three years, they can. Programs have been designed to send people overseas. There are also programs that focus less on the people side and more on international law and putting together marketing campaigns.” RRU offers a one-year master’s program in global management, combining business competencies with cross-cultural management. “It focuses on the business aspects, including finance and marketing,” says Dr. Márquez. Recent RRU alum, Marc Tassé, found the cultural component the most beneficial. “It isn’t just business practices like you would learn in an MBA,” he says. “We learned finance, economics, and business strategy. But we took those concepts and learned how it’s happening in North America and how it’s happening in other countries.”

Consider the postgraduate certificate in international management, offered by Fleming College in Peterborough, Ontario. “Our program is more focused on international business than cross-cultural management,” says Russell Turner, coordinator of the program, who adds that students get a taste of mar-

keting, finance, accounting, management, and importing and exporting. Students can enter these programs from different backgrounds, says Dr. Márquez. “There’s no particular discipline [needed]. A Bachelor of Commerce would be a great idea since they learn about the business aspect. But a bachelor’s degree in sociology or geography would be great as well since they appreciate different cultures. What we need are people who are highly interested in learning about international business and travelling around the world.” One of the greatest benefits of the program is also its greatest challenge which, according to Tassé, is the cross-cultural teamwork. “It’s a very team-based program,” he says, adding that RRU’s program consists of about 50 percent domestic students and 50 percent international students. “You’re mixed up with people of different cultures and different backgrounds. When you get people from China, Russia, and Canada working together, everyone has different mindsets.” Some programs offer internships while others have applied research projects, to create hands-on learning experiences. “Students are solving real business issues,” says Turner. Upon graduation, students can find an array of opportunities and earn anywhere between $85,000 to $100,000 a year, Dr. Márquez estimates. “It’s everything from marketing to financial planning to logistics,” Brown says, adding that Seneca graduates are in roles ranging from business development and exports to financial planning internationally. Tassé is now entertaining two job offers: one at a pharmaceutical company and one at an Australian biometrics company expanding to North America. He says a need exists for domestic companies looking to expand beyond Canada’s borders and companies abroad who are expanding in North America. “It’s not necessarily someone who wants to work overseas, but someone interested in other cultures and other places. It’s for someone who’s looking for that bridge between cultures.

JOBPOSTINGS.CA | GRAD GUIDE

Seneca’s program also combines both elements. “It’s everything from consulting across cultures, trade research, and banking. It’s a little bit of everything,” says Brown. “There are courses more business-oriented and other courses focused on applying the knowledge at a global level.”

EXPLORE CAREERS IN ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE ANALYSIS, DESIGN, AND IMPLEMENTATION As the world becomes ever more automated, becoming educated about the fundamentals and applications of artificial intelligence (AI) may help you stay competitive in the future labour market. If you feel the same way, the Artificial Intelligence Analysis, Design, and Implementation program at Durham College might be for you. This program is the first of its kind in Canada and Durham College is excited to pilot it this year. We had the opportunity to speak with Amit Maraj, Professor of the AI Program, to get the inside scoop on what students can expect in this new and unusual post-secondary program. To kick off the interview and give us a better understanding of what this program encompasses, Maraj explained, “The AI program is a one-year graduate certificate for students who already have a post-secondary school or college credential and would like to learn all about artificial intelligence to eventually move into the field.”

Durham College is looking for students with specific backgrounds, Maraj explained. “Any student that has a strong background in mathematics, computer programming, or any

AI is the future of technology and this program could have the potential to open a lot of career paths for young graduates. After the successful completion of the course, students could be eligible for jobs in many different careers, such as data scientist, business analyst, data engineer, machine learning analyst, AI systems developer, or AI scientist. Successful graduates will be on the fast track to new learning environments and will be equipped with the skills needed to shape the future. Maraj stressed, “AI is a buzzword and it has a very strong play in technology, but I would suggest students really learn what’s under the hood. It may or may not be for you depending on how sound you are in the area of mathematics and computer science.” So, before you get too caught up in the excitement of this new program, make sure your skills align with what is needed. It’s clear to see that new forms of technology are paving the way for the future. If you’re the type of student described above who’s talented in the area of science, mathematics, or engineering, then visit Durham College’s website and apply to become one of the first to experience this remarkable new program.

JOBPOSTINGS.CA | GRAD GUIDE

Students will get to dive deep into AI and learn about where science is heading. They will learn to apply their knowledge into practical applications and learn what makes AI tick, so to speak. This learning will include implementing several computer dashboard programs, computer vision programs, and investigating reinforcement learning programs. However, the type of student that is ideal for this program should have certain a foundation of knowledge in their repertoire.

similar field such as engineering or IT would be ideal.” Maraj stressed the importance of being ‘mathematically sound’ for the AI program. He adds, “The development that is taught within the AI program encompasses a wide range of skills in the computer science department, such as algorithms, software development, and a series of other enterprise supported development including mathematics.”

LESS THEORY | MORE PRACTICALITY

PROGRAMS

If a master’s or Ph.D. isn’t on the brain, then a college graduate certificate is a great option. With a degree or diploma under your academic belt, deciding whether grad school is right for you can be a lengthy process. With many graduate certificate and fast-track programs to choose from, Centennial College offers graduate students the chance to advance their careers. The program typically takes eight months to one year to complete and, according to Darryl Creeden, Director, Client Services and Divisional Communications, Centennial College, “the tuition is quite reasonable, in part because of their short duration. Like all college programs they incorporate applied learning, further preparing graduates for the workplace.” Specialize in your expertise Seneca College offers a wide range of specialized certificate programs, including full-time graduate certificates offered only two days a week to allow students to balance work, responsibilities, and school. Students to attend Seneca come with diverse post-secondary backgrounds from marketing, finance, sociology, music, to political science, all with the common goal of specializing in a new career field.

Understand future advantages A graduate certificate can offer more than just another piece of academic achievement. It can also present long-term career benefits, like higher salaries. In general, six months after graduation, Seneca students who

complete a graduate certificate earn an annual salary of about $6,300 more than those who complete a two-year diploma. Moreover, Tsonis says, “While undergraduate programs teach fundamental skills, graduate certificate programs are often focused on developing skills and expertise within a very specific aspect of an industry. This can be attractive to employers.” Similarly, Glenn Vollebregt, President and CEO, St. Lawrence College, says, “The effort required to earn a graduate certificate is rewarded with many long-term career benefits. Our graduates gain specialized skills that will set them apart in today’s competitive workplace.” It’s important to note that many current grad certificate students are already well into their careers. Returning to school, the students’ goals are simply to add fresh skills to their repertoire or previous education. Make the final call Deciding on whether or not to pursue a graduate certificate requires careful consideration. Creeden explains, “Most graduate certificate programs are eight months in duration and are delivered in a full-time format. We recommend that students treat these programs as a full-time job to ensure they dedicate the appropriate time to their studies and allow for work/life balance.” Prospective students must consider how they will fit this demanding course load, along with homework, into their already busy days. Family responsibilities and financial obligations will also require thorough planning to alleviate added stress throughout the school year. Ultimately, it’s up to you to determine what you like to do and where you’d like to be. Jobs in high demand fields are highly competitive, so you want to think about what you can bring to the table that differentiates you from other job applicants. These graduate certificates help you stand out from the crowd and bring options to your career.

JOBPOSTINGS.CA | GRAD GUIDE

According to Lily Tsonis, Manager of Student Recruitment at Seneca, “A graduate certificate from Seneca is the ideal choice for postsecondary graduates who want more career-focused education and industry experience. For professionals, a graduate certificate can lead to career advancement or provide a pathway to a new career in just one year. Many of our graduate certificates feature a work component that enables you to hone your skills in your chosen field and make important contacts before you graduate.”

To ensure the complete process is executed smoothly, SCL companies like UPS house a wide range of departments from direct operations crews to marketing and solution development groups to finance teams. “You end up with a fairly broad group of people involved,” says Jim Ramsay, vice-president of Global Freight Forwarding at UPS Supply Chain Solutions. “In terms of grads coming in from school today, quite often with some sort of background in finance, marketing, or operations; when you work for a company like UPS, there’s all of that.” Supply chain management often uses a tool called strategic sourcing which aims to drive savings through building strong company-supplier relationships, while also incorporating research on market conditions, customer needs, and organizational goals.

Education In the supply chain and logistics field, the learning never stops. The Schulich Executive Education Centre (SEEC) at York University offers a master’s certificate in supply chain and logistics management for professionals in the field. The course, with 13 classes spread over a three-month period, including 11 different modules and discussions in everything

from supply chain strategy, inventory management, sourcing, transportation, among other topics. “The reason that we do that is we like to have a solid basis of the supply chain and logistics approaches and concepts,” says Mark Edward Thomas, program director of the master’s certificate in supply chain and logistics at SEEC. “It’s like the wheat from the field all the way to the bread on your table—all of those things have to be coordinated all the way through the supply chain.” As a course that’s tailored to accommodate the busy schedules of business professionals, Thomas stresses that the course less resembles a lecture-type environment, but instead acts as an opportunity for discussion. On top of that, the added learning experience at SEEC allows for professionals, with little or ample training in the field, the chance to develop skills they otherwise may not have acquired solely through their work experience. Thomas adds, “It’s one thing to learn the techniques, but it’s another thing to put them in place and be an effective manager. We try to make effective managers that have a supply chain expertise.” Challenges and rewards “I actually consider it part of the fun of the job,” says Ramsay, when speaking on the challenges of working in supply chain and logistics. “Part of the fun is the fact that you’re dealing with a high level of complexity, meaning multiple countries are typically involved with transactions.” Issues when working with 12–14-hour time zone ranges, cultural differences, and unpredictable weather conditions can add to the challenge (or fun) of working in the industry. However, with the challenges come the rewards and Ramsay says it’s a very exciting time for supply chain and logistics. “In a lot of ways, [the industry] is a well-kept secret, but it shouldn’t be because there is some exciting and fun stuff that happens behind it.”

DEVELOPING OUR FUTURE CYBERSECURITY PROFESSIONALS Seneca College’s cybersecurity program offers industry-driven, cutting-edge education in the field. A big data leak at a major company. An email from an organization detailing a security breach that requires you to change your passwords. A suspicious email from a website or government organization describing a problem that can be resolved by providing personal information and passwords. What all those scenarios have in common is that the people or businesses affected are victims of cybercrime. With almost everything online nowadays, cyberattacks are a significant threat to our privacy and livelihood. According to Statistics Canada, there were 32,968 cyber-related violations in Canada in 2018, and almost half of those violations were for fraud. A CBC article reported that women were twice as likely than men to be targeted. The national average of reported cybercrime in Canada is 89.4 per 100,000 residents. In 2017, 21 percent of Canadian businesses reported they were impacted by a cybersecurity incident that affected their operations, according to Statistics Canada. How to get ahead of cybercrime The best way to avoid cyberattacks is through cybersecurity, and that’s the job of cybersecurity professionals. According to Cisco, cybersecurity is “the practice of protecting systems, networks, and programs from digital attacks.” Cybersecurity professionals are “trained to find weaknesses in databases, networks, hardware, firewalls, and encryption,” according to Tech Launch. Their number one priority is to prevent attacks by finding and fixing any issues before cybercriminals can exploit those weaknesses. Are there jobs in cybersecurity?

How to get into cybersecurity According to Policy Options, Canada is facing a growing cybersecurity skills gap. Policy Options reported that one of the

Several colleges and universities are offering cybersecurity programs or courses to help combat this problem. Seneca College’s Cybersecurity and Threat Management graduate certificate program is an eight-month program that prepares students for careers in the information and financial services sectors — areas critical to local and global innovation. “Seneca is adding to its more than 40 in-demand graduate certificate offerings by launching a new Cybersecurity and Threat Management program. With classes beginning in January 2020, the program aims to address the increasing demand for cybersecurity talent in Canada,” said Ranjan Bhattacharya, Dean of the Faculty of Applied Science & Engineering Technology. Experts providing valuable insight Courses for the program will be offered at Seneca’s Newnham Campus, and at Seneca Downtown — a new Toronto location. “Seneca has partnered with Toronto Finance International (TFI) and a team of leading employers in the financial sector to provide industry-driven, cutting-edge education in cybersecurity,” Bhattacharya said. In the program, students will focus on the technical specialization required to work in the cybersecurity field as well as develop project management, communication and data-driven analytical skills vital for success in the financial sector. Real-world application The program is one of the first programs being offered in Seneca’s new downtown space, which has been designed with the busy working professional in mind, as well as those looking to upgrade their skills or change careers. “It is for anyone with a background in finance, business, computing, or information technology,” Bhattacharya said. “Through a combination of course work and an industry-integrated project, students will learn to contribute to professional cybersecurity teams at banks, investment fund companies, insurance firms and pretty much any organization that requires a cyber-threat management expert.

It’s no surprise that with cyberattacks a constant threat to businesses, the job prospects in that field are increasing. According to a recent report from Toronto Finance International (TFI) and Deloitte, demand for experts trained in cybersecurity in Canada is growing annually, with organizations anticipating to fill some 8,000 roles by 2021. Similarly, Global News reported that a cybersecurity centre will be opening in Ottawa, and there are currently around 313,000 open cybersecurity jobs in the U.S.

reasons for this gap is that the skill sets needed are evolving so quickly that organizations are struggling to keep up.

Words Megan Santos // Images Andrey Popov

Whether you’re a tech guru or a little old school, there’s no denying that technology-focused roles are in high demand in today’s workplace. For instance, we’re seeing more tech startups popping up across some of Canada’s biggest metropolises, like Toronto, Waterloo, Montreal, Quebec, and Vancouver. In fact, a 2017 survey by the CBRE Group, revealed that Toronto’s tech scene created more tech jobs than the San Francisco Bay area, Seattle and Washington, D.C., combined last year. What this means is that roles under the tech umbrella will see a notable increase in salaries for the next several years. Likewise, the unemployment rate for people in Natural and Applied Sciences roles—including computer programmers and web designers—is expected to remain remarkably low for the next several years to come. Overall, the demand for this talent is constant, and through their post-grad programs, colleges are doing their part in bridging that gap.

Going back to school Deciding to go back to school for a post-grad isn’t always a simple one, especially after the years spent completing your undergrad, and the thousands of dollars accumulated in student debt. However, for students aspiring to work in the tech industry, the idea of additional schooling is becoming more popular.

This program is attractive because, in a very short period, we can train them to become software developers.”

“Many of them received degrees in something they really liked, but it didn’t easily lead to a job,” says Randall Kozak, coordinator for the Computer Applications Development program (CAD) at Conestoga College. “This program is attractive because, in a very short period, we can train them to become software developers,” which, as a result, pairs well with their skills from their previous academic backgrounds.

As hybrid roles find their places within companies, more undergrads are learning that it’s harder to find opportunities with just a degree or diploma.

“Generally speaking, the success of the co-op program is very high. What that means is most of the students stay with their co-op company,” says Kozak, adding that many end up working in software development, programming, testing, and support.

“I actually interview all applicants that come into the program,” says Darin Faber, program coordinator and professor for the Interactive Media Management program at Algonquin College. “People have told me that they need web design, graphics, and video skills for a communications job—this is becoming quite popular.”

Learning tech In Conestoga’s CAD program, students take on three intensive semesters to achieve a graduate certificate. “The goal of it is to train students to become web developers, so they’re able to develop a web application by the time they’re done,” says Kozak. Historically, the program trained its students to develop business applications, like scheduling, logistics, and accounting. But over time, it has evolved to also include e-commerce websites, social media, and consumer applications. In addition to attracting local students, the CAD program also draws in talent from abroad, accepting 50 percent domestic and 50 percent international students each year.

In the year-long, Interactive Media Management program at Algonquin College, students work towards a graduate certificate that offers a plethora of career opportunity upon graduation. These job titles can include UX designer, programmer, media director, video editor, etc. “The program is broken down into two semesters,” Faber explains. “We have 12 courses, and four of them are core, which is to do with web development, web design, web programming. They learn graphic design, graphics technologies, and Adobe CC Master Collection.” Students will also take on smaller focuses, such as studio labs, infographics and data visualization, and layout and

Finding leverage These tech-focused grad school programs offer more than just in-class learning; they also allow students to gain valuable working experience in the field.

“The co-op term helps a lot and gives them the professional experience they need,” he explains. “Working in a professional environment does require special skills that we try to teach, but it’s not automatic in a classroom setting. They really need the work experience to flesh out those skills.” Similarly, students in the Interactive Media Management program take on client projects in their second semester, where they also gain real experience. “The students are put into smaller groups, and a real non-profit organization or educational institute is brought in,” says Faber. “They come and share a problem that they would like our students to work on, and that becomes their entire second semester. It’s internal—they’re learning and working at the same time.” Aside from what’s taught throughout each program, employers are searching for a special something in each candidate applying to their companies. It’s suggested to build your personal brand and be more active in the job search by networking and volunteering. “You have to get out there, get meetings, join organizations,” lists Faber, adding that within the program, students also take classes focusing on job searching. “If you’re not out the door with a job in hand, then you should volunteer.” By being more thorough with the way you find a job, it also helps with promoting your name amongst employers. “Today, you have to market yourself now, and it’s no longer just a resumé in hand,” says Faber. “You have to create a marketing package.” Kozak describes today’s demand for tech talent as “very strong” explaining, “the IT industry does go through cycles, and the demand for developers does go up somewhat. The average demand is higher than many other fields and, even in the downtimes, it tends to still be higher than any other field.”

STARS, STRIPES, AND GRAD SCHOOL The U.S. offers a range of academic opportunities. Take your grad school sights south of the border. Grad schools are waiting for you to step through their doors and if you do, you’ll become more prepared to meet today’s competitive job market. The question of where to study may be as important as what to study, and an American grad school may be a very sound choice. More than one million international students from more than 200 countries around the world pursued a higher education in the U.S. in 2017-18. Of these, 2.4 per cent came from Canada.

Quality of education

Research funding is more available to American faculties than it is to Canadians, so you may be exposed to cutting edge research. At many U.S. schools, you’ll find the latest technology and specialized equipment. The director of Ivy Educational Systems, Dr. Alex-

Programs galore The multitude of programs in the U.S. can be daunting but also encouraging; the sheer numbers make you more likely to find one tailored to your needs. “There are over 4,000 universities and colleges in the U.S. and this means there’s a wide range of options for students,” says Castilla. While Canadian universities have a limited number of programs in particular fields, the U.S. will undoubtedly have many more. Veterinary school, for example, has five programs in Canada and 28 in the U.S.

Career benefits Many U.S. programs have established affiliations with employers, enabling you to develop contacts in the field. Professors may belong to international research teams and, as their student, you may also be able to connect with experts

in your field of study. Erica Borchiver, a graduate of Western University studying dentistry at Nova Southeastern University, experienced this first-hand. “There are a few professors here with whom I’ve developed a student-mentor relationship, and I’m hopeful that their guidance will help me in establishing a career when I move back to Toronto.”

A social experience Between the lectures, logbooks, and latenight lattes, social experiences are also important. In her experience, Borchiver felt a renewed energy: “Americans are very spirited. There is a certain energy that I didn’t see as much when I was attending school in Canada. Students are encouraged to be active whether it’s in the classroom or outside.” Choosing an American grad school can be an opportunity to gain valuable life experience. “Living in Florida has exposed me to a number of new experiences that have forced me to make my own decisions and carve my own path,” she says. “I’m dependent on myself to resolve the day-to-day issues I face, and grow as a person.”

American universities are some of the world’s best. From the universities listed in The Times World University Rankings for 2019, three of the top five are American. In addition to the usual Ivy League names, dozens of U.S. schools appear on the list of the world’s top 400 schools, and are widely known for their high-quality education.

LAW | STUDY AWAY, PRACTICE AT HOME

HEADING SOUTH

U.S. LAW SCHOOL? NO OBJECTION! Studying law in the U.S. presents viable practicing options back home in Canada. From LSATs to articling, the path to becoming a lawyer is long but comes with great rewards. With over 200 American Bar Association-approved law schools in the U.S. to choose from, moving south of the border to study may just be a favourable option. But before you step out to become the next Elle Woods, it’s important to know how to get there and to be familiar with how to come back.

JD in the U.S. Because the admissions process is so competitive and there are fewer law schools in Canada, attending law school in the United States is a viable option for many aspiring Canadian attorneys, with many situated close to the border.

Lewis further added, “With a strong network of alumni based in Buffalo, New York, and Ontario, Canada, our law students engage in a wide range of cross-border legal practice including trade, tax, immigration, real estate, and corporate and transactional work. These practitioners serve as community partners in the program and informal mentors to students throughout the course of their studies.”

Admissions checklist According to Liberty University’s International Student Department, “Canadian students do not need to submit an SAT/ACT for admission. Of course, Canadian law students do need to submit an LSAT score.” With almost 200 Canadian law students enrolled in both the school’s undergraduate and graduate degrees, Canadian students simply need to present the necessary paperwork at the U.S. border.

Some of the items students will need— in addition to the completed application—are a personal statement, letters of recommendation, post-secondary transcripts, an affidavit of financial support, and their passport.

Practicing in Canada For Robert Niemi, a Canadian lawyer and 2011 graduate of Liberty University School of Law, the quick transition back to practicing in the Canadian law system was all about timing. “Exams for both the National Committee on Accreditation (NCA) and Bar Exam are only at specific times of the year,” he says. The NCA examinations evaluate students who have graduated from law school outside of Canada, then issues a certificate given that all criteria is met. The second step is articling—a law internship, which is usually paid, “where a lawyer acts as a principal to the articling student,” Niemi explains. And once the articling is completed, the student is sworn in as a lawyer. But by being trained in both Canadian and U.S. legal systems, you will end up with an international advantage.

“The School of Law is situated just minutes from the Canadian border, and many of our Canadian students remain living in Canada while attending law school, while others live in Buffalo but can easily return home as often as they’d like,” explained Meredith Kolsky Lewis, Professor and Vice Dean for International and Graduate Programs at the University at Buffalo School of Law. “Our program offers a unique

Cross-Border Legal Studies Concentration, which recognizes the global nature of the U.S. economy and legal practice, and the growing need for attorneys trained in transnational law.”

STUDYING FOR YOUR MASTERS IN THE UK Everything you need to know and more. You finished your Bachelor’s degree, you’re ready to plunge into your Masters, but you also don’t want to put your travel plans on the back burner. Why not aim for the best of both worlds? For many young Canadians, the U.K. is their top destination when studying for their Masters abroad. Interested? The U.K. is a hot spot for students from around the globe, and for good reasons. But, how does one start the process? What do they need to know? We had the opportunity to speak with Stephen Spriggs, the managing director of William Clarence Education, a London based education consultancy. From obtaining a visa to how you should prepare for U.K. study culture, Spriggs has the answers every student needs to know. Visas The first thing you’ll need look into is the necessary legal documents and getting a visa to travel and stay in the U.K.. Spriggs told us that a visa for non-European students are generally easy to get. He said, “Students will need to apply for a Tier 4 student visa following an unconditional placement offer with a licensed sponsor (school). You will also need to demonstrate the ability to support yourself financially while studying, so be sure to save before applying.”

Many different variables factor into getting the proper visa. You can find out what’s best for you online or at your local immigration office.

Figuring out if you’ll get to work or take an internship in the U.K., while studying for your Masters, will all depend on the type of visa you try to pursue. Spriggs told us, “It is less easy to work while here as a student as the visa is a student visa. Tier 4 visa holders can undertake a work placement as part of their degree (meeting certain parameters). For internships not deemed integral to studies, you will be restricted to 20 hours per week during term time but are free to pursue a full-time internship during vacation periods.” While it may not be easy to do, you can get involved in the workforce and score an internship, which might just help you get a job in your area of study. Culture Once you get through all the paperwork, studying in the U.K. can be lots of fun! Spriggs told us that the U.K. has a unique education system backed by a worldwide method of learning. “The British education system has long been viewed as world-leading. For newcomers, it focuses on developing ideas and encouraging discussions that can be strange but allows students to grow as an individual just as much as academically.” Overall As you can see, there are a few things you must consider before continuing your education in the U.K.. However, once everything is completed, you will have gained invaluable experience. Finding employment after your study abroad may even be easier for someone who has remained in their own country. Spriggs explained, “Studying aboard isn’t easy. Finding yourself in a new environment surrounded by strangers can be anxiety-inducing; it’s for this reason that doing so is a positive sign for prospective employers.” If you are looking for the next step in education, why not take that step outside of your comfort zone? You’ll gain a perspective and education that could not be given at home. Explore what the world has to offer and consider studying for your Masters in the U.K..

JOBPOSTINGS.CA | GRAD GUIDE

We also asked Spriggs if work visas are more accessible during or after a student’s study period in the U.K. Spriggs told us that, “It depends on the subject studied and at what level. Certain types of visas, such as the Tier 4 Doctorate Extension Scheme will make it easier for Ph.D students to remain and work. Most other international students will still need to apply for a Tier 2 visa with a sponsorship from a registered company. A Tier 1 visa is also an option for entrepreneurial graduates; however, you will be required to demonstrate a genuine and credible business idea.”

LOOK EAST. CONSIDER CHINA FOR YOUR MASTERS OR MBA? One of the fastest-developing countries in the world offers some of the best business programs. You’ve completed four years of university, obtained a Bachelor’s degree, and now you’re thinking of doing a Masters or MBA. The biggest question you face is where to study. Canada? The U.S.? Or maybe studying abroad is the best option? According to Find a Masters, more and more employers are looking for candidates who have an international outlook and can deal with clients and colleagues from around the world. But there are several factors to consider when choosing which post-graduate institution to attend, such as reputation, culture, and ease of finding employment. One of the best places in the world right now for graduates looking to complete a Masters or MBA is China. The country has the world’s second-largest economy and remains one of the fastest-developing countries in the world according to Top MBA. Also, programs in China and Hong Kong take up about 14 percent of the Financial Times’ top 50 MBA rankings, according to Business Because. But before you book that flight to China, you need to apply for a visa to study abroad, one that can include a lengthy medical checkup and notarization. Fortunately, Safa Saidani, International Admission at Peking University, in Shenzhen, China, advises that the school you apply to will assist you in completing the required paperwork and residence permit. Great cities, amazing culture

For the language, DeBell says students can get around with English, especially in the big cities, but “it really benefits you to know Chinese. It may not seem like a big deal, but it can be quite a shock when everyone around you is speaking a different language.” A different culture also means different foods, and DeBell says

Finally, the culture and the people are different from what we’re used to in the West. In Eastern culture, “there is a strong focus on family and relationship building,” DeBell says. And the locals are very kind and helpful, and when you meet someone for coffee, they will give you a gift, he says. “They are possibly the most trustworthy and honest people I’ve ever met.” Jumpstart your career Chinese schools provide opportunities for giant salary gains and are in the top four out of five for salary increases in the Financial Times’ MBA rankings. You want in on that cash after you graduate? Consider getting some work experience in China after you graduate. According to Saidani, “To get a work visa in China, it’s usually required to have two years’ of experience, but this requirement is waived when students graduate from a Chinese University. … Students can also consider getting a ‘business startup visa’ for one to two years to look for a job or to start their own company. More than 90 percent of MBA graduates at most Chinese schools are employed after three months, according to Business Because. Some schools even have 100 percent post-graduate employment rates. World-class resume Perhaps one of the best takeaways for post-graduate students studying in China is having an internationalized resume. The insights graduates get from studying and working in the country will be a big talking point during interviews. “From my experience,” DeBell says, “(studying abroad) has definitely helped improve my soft skills and personal awareness. … My thoughts are that studying for a Masters in another country will at least provide you with a resume differentiator and a discussion point for new job applications.”

WOMEN FIND THEIR PLACE IN THE OIL AND GAS INDUSTRY Despite having more men in the industry, women are welcome in the field and are thriving. Over the next few years, the oil and gas industry is where you want to be. In fact, this industry is projected to see job growth until 2020 because of retiring workers and renewed industry activity, according to Marketwired. CAPP also found that Canada’s oil production is forecast to increase substantially by 2030. Meanwhile, according to Energy Depth, the industry in the U.S. is expected to see a 1.7 percent annual job growth rate until 2026 and will fulfill the world’s growing appetite for oil for the next five years, according to CNBC. Given these projections, the number of employees hired by oil and gas companies is bound to increase, especially for women. In 2018, 18 per cent of the workplace in the Canadian oil and gas industry were women and 82 per cent were men, according to Statistics Canada. However, it’s important to note that the differences depend a lot around work environment, with men making up most of the field positions and women seeing noticeably higher representation in corporate positions. Overall, the industry is realizing the importance of gender diversity. What’s real? What’s false? It’s no secret that historically, the oil and gas industry has been dominated by men. According to World Oil, about 80 per cent of the global, oil and gas industry workforce is male, and only 22 per cent is female, one of the widest gender gaps among major industries. Therefore, it could be assumed the workplace environment is unwelcoming for women. However, in Krysten James, Analyst - Global Strategy, Planning & Economics for CNOOC International Energy, this is not the case. “There may be some misconceptions that oil and gas is not a friendly or hospitable work environment for women, but in my experience, this is definitely not true,” she said.

According to Caldwell, 75 per cent of U.S. respondents (oil and gas professionals) in a study for the Global Diversity and Inclusion report said career prospects for women in the oil and gas industry had improved in recent years. And in Asia, oil and gas firms are now starting to catch up to being gender diverse by focusing on female workers. All-in-all, there’s a real opportunity for individuals – men or women – who are driven, motivated to learn and capable of

Overcoming challenges As with any industry, oil and gas presents some challenges to new employees. “I think women entering into the oil and gas industry face many of the same challenges as men do –– how to build credibility, add value, work on rewarding projects, and build connections with colleagues and leaders throughout the organization,” Krysten said. However, there are steps you can take to overcome these challenges. Krysten believes finding a mentor or sponsor can be helpful and can often accelerate one’s success. But she also says it’s also important to take ownership over your own career. “Having short, medium, and long-term goals and building a network of people who motivate you are definitely two very good approaches to accomplishing your goals, regardless of your gender or industry,” Krysten said. More than one road to a destination If you have an interest in the oil and gas industry, there is a lot of variety regarding job opportunities beyond the more obvious career paths. For those considering entering the industry, it’s important to start reaching out to people you already know or are connected with by a second-degree connection. This is a great first step to learn more about the industry, get insights into different career opportunities, find out about different companies and start to build a network of people. Krysten suggests offering to meet up with industry professionals over a quick coffee. Once you’ve secured a meeting, it’s important to do your homework beforehand, come prepared with questions and use this as an opportunity to pitch yourself. The best way to wrap-up these meetings is to ask if they know of anyone else who might be willing to meet with you to talk further about a specific topic. “Listen carefully to the conversation,” Krysten adds, “and identify potential areas of interest that you would like to dive into a bit deeper. Always follow-up with a quick email or phone call thanking the individual for their time and keep in touch with them. You never know where these small connections can lead.”

REPORTING LIVE: INDIGENOUS IN JOURNALISM The Indigenous community often goes unheard in the media. These journalists are changing that. How many stories do you think are worth telling across Canada? I’m willing to bet everyone you pass on the street will tell you something fascinating over a cup of coffee and a few free hours. Everyone has a story to tell, but for the Indigenous community, those stories are barely getting heard.

“When reporting in Belleville, I was faced with covering some First Nations issues that affected me as well as some relatives. It was difficult for me to work on a story when people looked at me and asked why I wasn’t on their side supporting them,” he says.

News stories concerning the affairs of Canada’s Indigenous community are strikingly under-reported across the country. Between the years of 2010 and 2013, Journalists for Human Rights (JHR) conducted a study in Ontario examining the share of news coverage the Indigenous community received compared to the rest of the province.

But for Maracle, the pros of studying toward his dream far outweighed the cons. He received financial and moral support for college through his Mohawk band and through the college.

The study reports that 171 print and online news outlets published over two million stories between 2010 and 2013. Only about 6,000 of those focused on Indigenous issues—a total of 0.3 per cent of total news coverage across the province. However, according to the Toronto Star, in a latest JHR report between 2013 to 2016, experts found “a steady increase in Indigenous story production.” Back in 2013, 39 per cent of stories were negative in tone, but the most recent study found that this dropped to 11 per cent. But there’s still a long way to go as Indigenous coverage is about four times less than what it should be based on the population.

Rising to the challenge Riley Maracle is a member of the Mohawks of the Bay of Quinte. Originally from Wilberforce, Ontario, Maracle studied journalism at Loyalist College in Belleville, Ontario. He received real world experience in reporting issues concerning the Indigenous community, which he says was as challenging as it was rewarding.

For Kimberly Cleave, an online producer for the Indigenous Peoples Television Network’s Digital Drum website, working in the media has given her the opportunity to learn more about her Métis background. “The past three years have been an incredible learning experience,” says Cleave. “There are things in media these days involving our culture, history, and things that have played out. I wanted to learn more about it—there’s no limitation to how much you can learn working in the media and within the native community telling their stories.” Cleave says if working in the media is something you’re serious about, take the time to explore all your options before making a final decision. If you’re an Indigenous person, Maracle advises you to lean on your band for support and never give up telling indigenous stories when it gets tough. “Don’t be afraid to take the risks and the chances. You will be faced with some adversity and stereotypes as a First Nations person, but don’t let them stop you from pursuing your dreams in the media field,” he says. There’s a voice across Canada that’s barely being heard. There’s no stronger helping hand than that of a fellow Indigenous media professional in giving that voice some breath.

DISABILITY | GATEWAY ASSOCIATION

Words Jana Gregorio // Image Andrey Popov

CAREER MATCHMAKER Finding a job can be difficult, and it can be even harder for people with disabilities. According to Statistics Canada, the employment rate in 2016 for Canadians ages 25 to 64 with disabilities was 59 per cent compared to 80 per cent of Canadians without a disability.

The one thing the organization emphasizes is finding the best fit first, instead of placing someone in a job because it’s the first one available.

Fortunately, Canada is working to improve upon these statistics by supporting many employment support centres focused on helping individuals with disabilities find meaningful employment. Gateway Association, a family resource centre that specializes in helping families who live with disabilities, is one of these centres.

Ingrid Muschta, diversity and inclusion specialist at Ontario Disability Employment Network (ODEN), agrees that fit is very important when looking for employment.

“There are just so many people out there that are so capable and are so beneficial to employers, and once they get hired, they make fantastic employees,” says Renate Burwash, director of employment at Gateway Association. “They have a really hard time, sometimes, finding the jobs and finding what they’re good at, and we can help them with that.”

“A proper fit between the person applying and the skills that are required for the function is crucial to ensure that the hire is a proper hire, and not just another ‘socially responsible’ check box,” she says. “Also, if there is no ‘job fit,’ that position may not be seen as critical to the operations of the business and may be jeopardize when times are tough and downsizing or layoffs take place.” ODEN is a member organization of more than 100 employment service providers and private corporations across Ontario. “Our common goal is to improve employment outcomes for job seekers who have a disability, and to enable businesses to successfully access the talent they need to meet their human resource demands,” Muschta says.

Employment services

How to get involved

We Belong is Gateway Association’s employment program. Although they work with people with a variety of disabilities, most of their funding goes to people with unmet needs who don’t receive Persons with Developmental Disabilities (PDD) funding.

If people with disabilities want to get involved, they can drop by or call Gateway’s office and ask to speak with someone on the employment team.

When people come in for help, Gateway first does an in-depth discovery process where they learn about the person’s history, interests, skills, passions, as well as the types of accommodations they need and the types of environments they work best in. Once they find out the right industry and jobs, they begin the process of talking to employers and building those relationships.

These professionals will then fill out a form with basic information, set up a meeting to discuss the process, and outline some expectations. Once they decide it’s a great fit for them, they’re scheduled as soon as possible. Right now, Gateway Association only provides services in the Edmonton area, but people from other parts of Canada can download their app through the App Store or Google Play.
