ADOPTION MONTH Adopters and foster carers make a huge difference to the lives of children and young people. A supportive and caring environment gives them the opportunity to achieve more and have higher aspirations. National Adoption Week runs from the 16th - 22nd of October and aims to raise awareness about local adoption giving islanders an opportunity to meet with a social worker at one of their pop-up information sites held throughout October. Whilst promoting local adoption, the team are also keen to encourage anyone interested in fostering to come along for an informal chat and find out more about local fostering. Fostering and Adoption Jersey needs adopters for babies, toddlers, siblings and school age children. Whilst providing a permanent home for a child is a rewarding experience, this can also be challenging at times. In recognition of this, the fostering and adoption team offers extensive preparation, training and ongoing support. Dedicated foster carers help make sure that being in care is no barrier to young people achieving their ambitions. In Jersey we need carers for all kinds of children, from babies to teenagers. We have care leavers with success stories that show foster carers can literally change lives. Continued on page 11

Jersey Electricity is Island’s first five-star landlord Jersey Electricity has become the Island’s first Rent Safe landlord to be awarded Five Stars for all its domestic rental properties under the new States of Jersey, Environmental Health Department’s Rent Safe Scheme. Among JE’s Group businesses is a property portfolio that includes 29 private houses and flats in St Helier, St John and St Ouen as well as the B&Q store and Medical Centre situated on the utility’s Powerhouse site at Queen’s Road. Each one of the 29 domestic dwellings has its own Five-Star certificate of excellence following a week-long inspection of every property by Environmental Health officials. Many of the homes were originally built in the 1970s by the Company to accommodate engineers from the UK to run and maintain La Collette Power Station and Island network. The portfolio is now rented out in the open market. The properties are run by JE’s Company Secretary Peter Routier and maintained by Property and Facilities Manager Damion Harrison. Rent Safe is a voluntary scheme designed to improve standards in the private rental sector. While all landlords can register their properties, only those that meet an accredited rating of three, four or five stars are listed on the Rent Safe register. To attain five stars the scheme states: ‘The property exceeds the minimum Rent Safe standard and has achieved accreditation through compliance with legal standards. Energy efficiency measures are also in place.’ Mr Routier said: ‘As the providers of over a third of the Island’s energy requirements we encourage energy efficiency among our customers. We

appreciate that it is sometimes difficult for tenants to ensure their homes are equipped with energy efficiency measures so it is only right and proper that we as landlords excel in this area.’ The Environment Department says a badly insulated two-bedroom flat can cost up to £600 a month to heat. By using an accredited landlord, potential tenants know before they even view a property that the landlord: takes their tenant’s welfare seriously, takes action to resolve issues quickly and works to make

sure their properties continue to meet recognised housing standards. As well as energy efficiency measures, on inspection, JE’s properties had to demonstrate a high standard of maintenance and safety, including electrical integrity, smoke detection devices and security devices such as window locks, and secure door entry systems. The States also inspect tenancy contracts and the way landlords deal with rent arrears and deposits. In presenting the Rent Safe

Landlord and Five Star Certificates to Mr Routier and Mr Harrison, Minister for the Environment, Steve Luce, said: ‘Good, safe housing has a direct impact on our physical health and mental wellbeing. Jersey Electricity recognise this and have demonstrated how their housing stock also provides affordable heating and other energy efficiency measures for their tenants, which means lower bills. We welcome them to the Rent Safe scheme as the first landlord to achieve five stars for each of their properties.’

GP visits will rise 33%, report estimates This is the first report by the Public Health Statistics Unit to describe the potential level of occurrence of disease in Jersey, based on the current prevalence of disease combined with the projected future population, assuming the recent level of net inward migration continues. The results of this analysis demonstrate what may potentially happen if the current disease prevalence continues while the population increases and ages. Main findings show that if the current

age-specific prevalence of diseases/ conditions continued together with the currently observed level of net inward migration, it is estimated that Jersey would expect to see an increase in patients with a number of chronic and serious diseases and conditions. It is estimated that there will be an additional 70,000 GP consultations each year by 2026 and by 2036, it is estimated there will be an additional 143,000 consultations compared to 2016 bringing the number of consultations to 575,000 per year. Projections for each disease show:

• the number of people on the obesity register is estimated to increase by 28% in 2036 • the number of people with hypertension is projected to be around 21,400 in 2036, a 46% increase • the number of people with diabetes is estimated to increase from 3,600 in 2016 to 5,100 by 2036 • heart failure is estimated to affect an additional 600 patients by 2036, an increase of 75% • the number of people on the dementia register is estimated to double over the next 20 years • the number of people on the coronary

heart disease register is estimated to increase by 63% • It is estimated that there will be an additional 900 patients on the stroke and transient ischaemic attack (TIA) register by 2036, an increase of 64% • the number of people with chronic kidney disease is estimated to increase from 2,700 on the register in 2016 to around 4,700 in two decades time, an increase of 74% • the number of people with asthma is estimated to increase by 25% over the next two decades, increasing from 5,200 in 2016 to 6,600 in 2036 • the number of patients requiring

palliative care is estimated to almost double over the next two decades, to around 800 by 2036 The effect of the aging of the current population was explored by considering an (artificial) migration scenario of no inward or outward migration. The results of this exploratory analysis gave similar increases to the +1,000 net migration scenario for those conditions affecting mainly older populations, such as coronary heart disease and chronic kidney disease, indicating that the aging of the population is driving the increases in the numbers of people with these conditions.

THREE AWARDS FOR RE-USE AND RECYCLING CENTRE The Department for Infrastructure’s new Household Re-use and Recycling Centre has been recognised for its design, art work and sustainability in the Jersey Architectural Commission design competition. At a ceremony in September, to mark Jersey Architecture 2017, the recycling centre won awards in the following categories: • Small Scale New Build Development – highly commended • Best Art Work in the Public Domain – highly commended • Best Example of Innovative (and/ or) Sustainable Design – commended Overall, there were 61 entries in 11 categories in the biennial award scheme which is part of a day of events to celebrate and promote high quality design created and achieved by Jersey architects, designers and developers. The best Large-Scale New Build Development went to a parish housing scheme, Hameau de la Mer. In this category, Jersey Property Holdings received a commendation for the design of the new St Martin’s School. Other notable winners included the Salvation Army Bread of Life Café and Bakery which won the Historic Buildings Project award. The best Art Work in the Public Domain award went to a sculpture trail project, Crapaud, a combined effort by artist sculptor Michelle Cain, willow sculptor Alcindo Pinto,

and Jon Parkes of the National Trust for Jersey. The President of the Association of Jersey Architects, Colin Buesnel said ‘I am delighted to see the Island’s local architects showcase their works through these design awards and that they have received the recognition that they rightly deserve. The quality of the designs presented show that our members are capable of delivering high quality projects of any size, scale and complexity.' The Minister for the Environment, Deputy Steve Luce said ‘Looking at the entries for this year’s design awards competition, I’m delighted

to see that the quality of design in Jersey continues to grow, and to inspire. It’s no small part due to the input of the Jersey Architectural Commission which has provided just the kind of independent voice that we hoped for.’ Jersey Architecture 2017 incorporating the Jersey Architectural Commission design awards is a joint enterprise between the Department of the Environment and the Association of Jersey Architects. It’s held every two years. The submissions were assessed by a judging panel, comprising Jersey Architecture Commissioners and a guest judge.

40 jobs to be lost by care home closure Around half of the carers employed by St Helier could lose their jobs when a residential home closes. Currently, more than 80 people work in the parish’s care homes. Only around 40 jobs will remain when St Helier House shuts its doors in March 2019. It is being forced to close amid fire safety fears, after the building was found to be covered in combustible cladding. Constable Simon Crowcroft says staff there – and at St Helier’s other care home, St Ewolds – will be competing for the same roles: “They won’t have to re-apply for their jobs, but there is a process we go though when this kind of problem happens, that all of the staff working for that particular service go through a process of discussion with the Human

Resources team and they make decisions based on what they want to do. Whether they want to take voluntary redundancy for example,

or continue working within the service.” He says the Town Hall will do all it can to keep redundancies to a minimum.

A new record for Run4Men Despite the wet and windy weather, on 10th September, a record number of resilient runners and walkers took part in Run4Men 2017 to honour the memory of Islander Justin Cotillard. Justin tragically passed away when he was 30 years old due to an aggressive form of brain cancer just months after marrying his wife Emma and becoming dad to their baby daughter Mia. Many of the runners included friends and family of Justin, who were all moved by the 300 participants who came together and helped to raise money for Cancer Research UK. So far, the charity has exceeded their fundraising target of £10,000, and with sponsorship money and donations sill coming in, they are hoping to double that. Run4Men offered a choice of two distances, 5km and 10km. Congratulations to George Farley and Holly Thebault, the fastest male and female runners for the 5km. George finished in 19:05 and Holly completed it in 24:38. For the 10km, it was a tough contest between brothers Jamie and Ross Allan, with Jamie sprinting

into first place and completing in 37:30. The fastest female runner of the 10km was Rebecca Tinnelly, completing it in 42:54. Run4Men is sponsored by Jerseybased alternative finance firm Sancus. Moore Stephens was the largest corporate entrant this year, with 40 employees taking part and raising significant funds. Run4Men is one of the few events dedicated to raising awareness of cancer in males. Many people don’t realise that men are more at risk of nearly all the common cancers that affect both sexes. Cancer Research UK has found that men are 14% more likely to get cancer than women, and by 2027, a man’s lifetime risk of cancer is predicted to reach one in two. A women’s lifetime risk is also increasing, just not as fast. Cancer Research UK has saved millions of lives by discovering new ways to prevent, diagnose and treat cancer. Over the past century, the researchers have made consistent progress in the fight against cancer and survival has doubled over the past 40 years. Their next target is to accelerate progress and see 3 in 4 people survive cancer by 2034.

It covers various vocations from beauty to bricklaying and painting and plumbing. The scheme combines training and study with full-time work. Programme manager Ross Edgar says the scheme is getting more and more popular. “We‘re currently supporting 320 apprentices at the moment. We do have a waiting list. It just seems to be going from strength to strength.” He says they are looking at being able to offer Higher (Level 4) and up to degree level apprenticeships next year. Voisin Law celebrate famous local ladies It was time for local ladies to shine at Jersey Museum when Voisin Law hosted a special evening, in conjunction with Jersey Heritage. Clients of the leading law firm were invited to mingle and enjoy drinks, canapés and a talk by Lucy Layton about the iconic women of Jersey. The Outreach Curator for Jersey Heritage spoke of the famous beauty Lillie Langtry, who took London Edwardian society by storm and surrealist photographer Claude Cahun whose pre-war artwork is now the toast of the contemporary art world. Lucy’s fascinating talk examined not only the lives of the well known women of Jersey but also shone a light on those whose stories really deserve to be better known. Voisins Head of Marketing Georgina Jeffries said, “It was wonderful to get together with so many of our clients again and we’re grateful to Lucy for a real insight into the remarkable lives these women, some who stayed here in the Island and others whose stories took us from the glamour of Hollywood to the remotest region of China! “We’d also like to say a special thanks to one of the patrons who very kindly loaned us a fabulous painting of Lillie Langtry for the evening.”

Winter flu warning There is a warning that winter flu could be particularly prevalent in Jersey this year. Health officials are urging pregnant women, people over the age of 65 and those with long-term medical conditions to get the flu vaccine. They also want children under the age of 11 to be immunised, because they are they most effective at spreading the virus. The nasal spray vaccine will be offered free in all primary schools this term. Adults can get their vaccination from their GP or pharmacy. It will cost 10 pounds. It’s believed a large outbreak in Australia could indicate higher prevalence of the illness on this side of the globe too. Dr Linda Diggle, head of preventive programmes, said that children under 5 are at least twice as likely to get flu and also remain contagious for longer. Dr Diggle is also reminding islanders that they won’t be protected by last year’s vaccine because strains of the virus change from season to season.

BATTLE A TABOO BY SHARING A BREW - AND LEAVE A LEGACY Charities are urging families and friends to put the kettle on, make a brew and chat about leaving a legacy to good causes. The Association of Jersey Charities is launching Jersey Legacy Week, which is being supported by corporate, private client and funds business Hawksford, to encourage people to challenge the taboo of talking about death. Research by Remember A Charity in the UK suggests only 7% of people include a charity in their Will even though 40% are open to the idea. Now the Association of Jersey Charities (AJC) and Hawksford are producing 30,000 special tea bags to share with AJC clients, members and supporters. It is hoped the informal and friendly tradition of sharing a cuppa will make people feel comfortable talking about life after their death, and how they might continue to help others in the years to come. People will be encouraged to sit down with their loved ones and companions to discuss their plans during Jersey Legacy Week from November 6. A consortium of island charities will distribute the free teabags, to be branded with campaign messages and links to independent information, promoting the importance of legacies to all kinds of philanthropic work in Jersey.

To raise awareness of Jersey Legacy Week, the AJC invites islanders to attend their Facebook event at bit. ly/JSYLegacyWeek to join in the conversation to talk about legacies with their loved ones. Ivo Le Maistre Smith, campaign coordinator for the AJC, said: ‘Talking about preparing a Will can seem like a daunting conversation to have, but it is also such an important one. Thinking about your own legacy, and the benefits that will live on into the future, can also be a tremendous source of comfort. ‘This innovative campaign will encourage islanders to come together with their relatives and friends to talk about the lasting benefits of giving in a friendly, relaxed environment over a comforting cuppa. ‘We hope Jersey Legacy Week will encourage more islanders to consider leaving a legacy to a local charity after they have made financial plans for their loved ones.’ The campaign will benefit charities of all sizes and areas of work, and legacies of all sizes can facilitate a tremendous amount of good work. As part of Legacy Week, Hawksford is offering £199 for a simple Will if an enquiry is made during Wills week. They are also offering a limited number of free half an hour consultations with a member of the Wills, Probate and Executor team if booked during Legacy week. ‘We were keen to get involved with

Legacy Week because we support many individuals and families in putting together their Wills, both UK and Jersey Wills. Many of our clients want to leave charity legacies in their Wills but acknowledge that it can be a hard thing to chat to their family members about. We are very happy to support any action that gets people talking about this taboo subject,’ said Charlotte Elliott, Wills and Probate lawyer, Hawksford. Any charities wishing to take part can register their interest with the AJC by visiting the website jerseycharities. org or by contacting the campaign coordinator, Ivo Le Maistre Smith on ivo@jerseycharities.org. Any individuals looking to find out more can also contact Ivo as above.

DfI Minister agrees St Brelade's speed limit changes proposed The Minister for Infrastructure, Deputy Eddie Noel, has agreed to the speed limit changes proposed by the parish of St Brelade and has asked for the law to be changed accordingly. The review of speed limits is an important element of the Road Safety Action Plan 2017-19, which Deputy Noel has been working on in collaboration with the parishes and the States of Jersey Police. The plan contains a framework for setting appropriate speed limits to achieve Island-wide consistency. Deputy Noel agreed with the Comité des Connétables in March 2017 that each parish would carry out a review of speed limits within their boundaries. St Brelade is the first parish to have carried out the review.

As well as the changes in St Brelade, there were a few historic requests that had been held until the next law change was due to be processed, and Deputy Noel agreed to these few changes in St Clement, St John, St Lawrence and St Peter. Deputy Noel said “Over the years I have been getting requests now and then from parishes to change speed limits. I was keen to work with parishes to change from a piecemeal approach to ensure consistency across the Island through a parish review process. I congratulate the Connétable of St Brelade on being the first to complete and submit his review and I was happy to endorse it.” The Connétable of St Brelade, Steve Pallett, said “As a parish, we receive several ad hoc requests each year from parishioners to reduce speed

limits around the parish. The St Brelade R o a d s Committee decided to take a more holistic view when considering any further changes and conducted a review of all roads, both States and parish, based on criteria agreed with the Department of Infrastructure (DfI). I must thank the hardworking members of my Roads Committee and officers from DfI for their support in producing a clearly defined proposal that took into account, for example, smaller by-roads and residential areas, and will provide a safer environment for all road users, including cyclists and pedestrians.”

A new initiative will help Islanders choose local bass Domino’s pizza opens In Jersey Jersey’s first ever Domino’s Pizza store has opened on St Saviour’s Road. Customers have the option to collect their pizzas from the store and ‘eat-in’ – although there is no table service. Alternatively, pizza lovers can order a delivery. But Franchisee Ian Morrow says they will initially only be delivering to certain parishes. “In order to ensure the pizzas arrive hot and fresh, we’ve got fairly strict standards on how long it can take to deliver,” he says. “We aim for an 8-9 minute delivery drive time, and that’s limited us initially to where we actually deliver to on the island. “To start with, we’re going to deliver to St Helier, St Clement, St Saviour and Grouville.” He adds that a second store could be opened to serve the rest of the island – or the existing branch could look to extend its delivery window – if the initial offering proves successful. Ian owns other stores in the UK, and he says the Jersey branch will operate the same pricing structure. He adds that the Domino’s website and app are now available to Jersey customers.

A new tagging initiative that will let diners and shoppers choose local bass caught using a sustainable hook and line fishery has been launched by the Department of the Environment and the Jersey Fisherman’s Association. Just 12 local fishing businesses have permission to catch bass using a hook and line, and to sell it on to local shop and restaurants. Bass caught this way will be tagged so they’re easily identifiable to diners. The tamperproof tags will be clipped through the mouth and gills of the fish and will identify the boat that landed them. Shops and restaurants supporting the scheme will be able to display a Genuine Jersey logo on their menus showing consumers that the fish for sale come from a local, sustainable and well-regulated source. The Minister for the Environment, Deputy Steve Luce said ‘Identifying local, sustainable bass sold and served in Jersey has been a long standing wish of mine and I’m delighted we’ve been able to work together to make it happen. It means people can be assured that if they choose Genuine Jersey bass, it’s come from local waters, caught by a local boat and is part of a range of measure designed to protect our fish stocks.’ Don Thompson, Jersey Fishermen’s Association, said ‘This scheme represents considerable effort on behalf of the Minister, fisheries officers, and Genuine Jersey

as well as the professional fishermen. It's aimed at preservation of our bass stocks, while at the same time providing consumers with the option of purchasing local, sustainablycaught fish. We hope that the public will, by purchasing Genuine Jerseylabelled fish, recognise the efforts of our fishermen to conserve bass stocks.' Due to dwindling stocks across Europe, the Minister for the Environment introduced strict new

by gathering additional data on all catches of bass on a weekly basis so the Department of the Environment can track the fishery and consider how best to manage the stock in 2018 and beyond. These changes are the latest in a series of measures introduced in recent years to conserve the bass fishery. They take into account new information from the EU Fisheries Council and advice from Jersey’s own Marine Resources Panel.

Beachgoers warning Following the identification and removal of Portuguese man-owar from beaches in Jersey, the Department of the Environment is asking beachgoers to keep an eye out and report any sightings. measures to conserve bass earlier this year. These included limiting netting and dredging to a small bycatch and only allowing 12 boats with a proven track record in bass fishing to target the species by hook and line fishery. The Department for Infrastructure (DfI) is asking customers of the household reuse and recycling centre (HRRC) at La Collette to ensure that they remove any batteries from their small electrical appliances (toys, alarm clocks, telephones, hand tools, etc). If the battery cannot be removed, please advise a member of staff on arrival to the site. At the end of September, there was a fire within the storage area of Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) items at the HRRC. It is strongly suspected that a lithium-ion battery (found in items such as hover-boards) caused it. The fire was spotted by DfI staff, the fire

service were called immediately, and they attended the fire, assisted by DfI staff, until midnight. Although joint collection of this type of WEEE is common practice, DfI has instigated the new procedure of separately collecting battery operated WEEE from mains power operated WEEE to better manage and minimise the risk of fire in the future. Signed, separate collection areas at the HRRC are now available. Minister for Infrastructure, Deputy Eddie Noel, said “I’d like to thank the fire service for attending the fire. I’d also like to thank the staff at the centre for the way they dealt with the situation, and the public for their understanding and cooperation during our closure.”

ADOPTION MONTH Every child deserves a loving home Adopters and foster carers make a huge difference to the lives of children and young people. A supportive and caring environment gives them the opportunity to achieve more and have higher aspirations. National Adoption Week runs from the 16th to the 22nd of October and aims to raise awareness about local adoption giving islanders an opportunity to meet with a social worker at one of their pop-up information sites held throughout October. Whilst promoting local adoption, the team are also keen to encourage anyone interested in fostering to come along for an informal chat and find out more about local fostering. Fostering and Adoption Fostering and Adoption Jersey needs adopters for babies, toddlers, siblings and school age children. In Jersey we need carers

for all kinds of children, from babies to teenagers. We have care leavers with success stories that show foster carers can literally change lives. If you foster a child with Fostering and Adoption Jersey, you’ll become part of a professional team which works to support you 24/7. The fostering and adoption team will provide ongoing training, supervision and support, which will help carers to develop particular skills and abilities to look after children who through no fault of their own need to be looked after by foster carers. As well as a fostering allowance, which provides for the day to day cost of looking after a child, further payment is available to carers who have gained experience of fostering and have undertaken relevant training. It’s up to you how far you want to go; you can develop a genuine career in care by fostering a child. If people are considering offering a permanent home to a child who is a little older, for example teenagers, long term fostering may be something to think about. At this crucial time in their lives teenagers can benefit enormously from a secure base with foster carers who can help them to move to independence once the time is right.

Fostering and adoption diversity Children who need to be fostered or adopted come from a variety of different communities and we like our adopters and foster carers to reflect this. We therefore welcome people who come from black or minority ethnic communities to come forward. We are looking for diversity in people, don’t think we’ll turn you down because you’re over 40, single, don’t own your own home or you are lesbian or gay. What we really need are people who can offer a child or brothers and sisters a loving and supportive family. We need people who can help a child recover from the reasons why they came in to care and can help them go on to thrive in a new family. If you are interested in Fostering or adoption come along to our pop-up information sites to find out more. 14th October St Martins Parish Hall, 10am – 4pm 20th & 21st October Town Library, 10am-4pm 28th October Communicare, youth wing, St Brelade’s, 10am-4pm Alternatively you can contact a member of the team by calling 01534 443970 or e-mailing fosteringandadoptionjersey@health.gov.je

FURTHER HOMES APPROVED Andium has been given permission to build five new homes at the Robin Hood junction. Despite concerns from neighbours, the Planning Committee has approved an application for a terrace of social housing on the site near Springfield. People living near the corner, which has been derelict for a decade, had said the scheme would impact upon their homes, and would result in a loss of light and privacy. But planning officials were satisfied with the overall design and layout. The development is part of the States owned housing company’s plans for the regeneration of St Helier.

Andium will own 1,600 properties within a half mile radius when 110 homes are built at the Jersey Gas site, with other developments planned for Ann Court and the Ann Street Brewery. It’s led some to express fears over population density in the north of town. Meanwhile, plans for 14 new homes at Keppel Tower on the Grouville Coast Road have been refused. Two previously approved schemes for the site had been overturned on appeal. The Planning Committee has turned down the latest proposed development to demolish two homes and build three houses and 11 flats. It received 14 objections, and said it was concerned about the size of the new properties and them being out of character with the area.

Job market boosted by ‘Back to Work’ parents Local employers are being asked to contact Social Security’s Back to Work team if they have part-time vacancies, particularly ones which can fit around school hours. This is to fulfil demand for over 100 parents who are claiming Income Support and are returning to work because their youngest child is starting nursery. In the past few weeks, Back to Work advisors have met 107 mums and dads who are now looking for jobs to help them get back into the work place. In addition, there are a further 27 parents who need to increase their working hours because their youngest is moving from nursery up to school. Many of these have extensive experience, qualifications and are enthusiastic and capable. All of the parents are

Entitled or Entitled to Work. Back to Work provides support for these parents to refresh their skills and develop new ones, alongside one-to-one mentoring with a Back to Work advisor. In partnership with employers, this support continues for up to six months after they start work to ensure a smooth transition back into the workplace. Deputy Graham Truscott, Social Security Assistant Minister, said: “September and October provide a unique opportunity for employers to discover this wealth of new talent returning to the job market. Past candidates have found work in many different sectors including hospitality, retail, catering, finance, IT, construction, administration and marketing. Therefore, if they have potential roles, I would urge local employers to contact Back to Work Recruitment as soon as possible.”

In the past two years Back to Work has helped over 260 parents return to work when their youngest child has started nursery or school. Many of these have found long term, sustainable employment and have moved towards financial independence. Back to Work Recruitment offers employers a comprehensive range of free recruitment services. These include candidate search and selection, job trials, training and work placements, job match events, shortlisting, interviewing, industry or company specific recruitment campaigns and financial incentives to support training needs. Employers who have any roles which may be suitable for parents returning to work, or who are interested in the services offered by Back to Work Recruitment, should call 01534 447411 or email backtowork@gov.je

NEWS

Partnership for Call & Check Jersey Post is pleased to announce it has entered an agreement with Homecall Limited to further develop, implement and deliver the award winning, innovative Call & Check service both in Jersey, and further afield. The Homecall partnership comprises Phil Romeril, local healthcare professional and businessman, Joe Dickinson from Jersey Post and Jersey Post Group. Joe originally devised the Call & Check concept when he entered an employee competition to explore potential diversification solutions for Jersey Post. Since the competition, Call & Check has been developed by Joe and the team at Jersey Post. Following trials in several island parishes, Call & Check is now a viable, much-loved service. It enables postal workers on their usual postal rounds to check on the wellbeing of vulnerable members of society and to connect them with supportive community services. It aims to help people stay in their home for longer, surrounded by their family and friends, which has been proven to have considerable mental and physical benefits for the individuals concerned. Joe Dickinson said, “Call & Check is a simple concept, but it works. We have a rapidly aging demographic in Jersey, and over the next 20 years the number of people over 65 will double. With Call & Check we

can provide much needed support to islanders who live alone or find themselves socially isolated. Since I first came up with the idea, my desire has always been to see it grow and develop into a service that can help people deal with the many problems of our ageing society.” With the ageing population increasing worldwide, the Call & Check service has been frequently in the spotlight as being a real solution to the challenge presented by this age-related, societal issue. The service has won an impressive array of awards including the World Mail Award for Corporate Social Responsibility, and the Sunday Times UK Social Innovator of the Year. In addition, Call & Check has been chosen as one of four major healthcare projects by the US Innovation Group, with a trial of the service soon to be launched in Detroit, USA. Other jurisdictions that are planning or have already started trials of the service include the UK, Finland, Ireland, Australia, Guernsey and the Isle of Man. Phil Romeril recognised the potential within the service and has been working closely with Joe Dickinson and Jersey Post over the last 12 months. Phil said, "The new partnership will ensure that the service is able to explore the interest shown in Call & Check by local and international postal and government authorities, and help to demonstrate how the service could operate and

support communities in Jersey and around the world.” Tim Brown, Chief Executive at Jersey Post, added, “We are very proud that our innovative home grown solution to a local problem has attracted such global interest. This partnership with Homecall, will enable us to build on our award winning service so it continues to thrive both in Jersey, and further afield.”

Plans to demolish coast properties Homes and businesses along the coast road at Greve d’Azette could be demolished to make way for 11 new properties, if plans are approved. An application has been submitted by the landowner for the stretch of La Grande Route de St Clement. De Gruchy and Co wants to build the two, three and four bed homes along the seafront, some of the buildings would be three storeys high. The firm is seeking outline planning permission to knock down a number of properties, including two existing commercial premises and nine homes. Architects say it would breathe new life into the area, but some business owners there say they are “worried” by the application, claiming they have not been told it

How the proposed new development would look ©Gallaher Architects

was going to be submitted. One of them claims they first heard about the new application when they were contacted by Channel 103, while another says they caught wind of the plans “through the grapevine”, rather than from their landlord. A De Gruchy and Co

spokesperson insists all their tenants have been kept informed, and says nothing will be happening for at least two years. The spokesperson adds that “nobody is going to be displaced”, and says more information about the site’s future will be available once planning has made a decision.

THERE are times when you walk into a shop and look at a collection and everything just seems to say ‘YES’. This is what happened when I called in to browse the new autumn ranges in Up and Above. Just inside the door was the Naya collection that included a stunning black semi-fitted ribbed dress with large taffeta cowl collar, almost reminiscent of the 60s – I fell in love with it. Then there was a coat (as pictured far right) with unusual shaping that was so different but totally wearable, you would feel a million dollars every time you put it on. The skirt in the other picture is part of a two-piece in a semi opaque self print and again a fabulous shape, here it is teamed with a shorter ¾ sleeve knit in a rib with lovely detailing.

I was in a dilemma a few weeks ago. Having lived and breathed a job I relished, what to do when it came to an end? The answer was to go back to where my passion started. So here I am, bringing you news and snippets from all manner of businesses from around the Island in the best way I know how.

In the words of Steve Jobs: ‘Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do.’

Vetono is simply the best for knitwear with an unusual twist. Shaped hems some with buttons down the back, these could be worn with slim pants or ankle skimmers and brogues or short boots to give you a fresh and up to the minute ‘look’ for the new season.

Look what I found at Pentagon! WOW! That word just about describes how blown over I was by the English Rose kitchen displays at Pentagon.

I had called in to look at tiles (their tile department is amazing) but ended up having a chat with Gary Power, the kitchen manager. He told me that with the kids back to school and autumn creeping in people are now looking at getting a new kitchen fitted before Christmas - well we all know the kitchen is the heart of the home!

Customers have been loving English Rose, whose brand ambassador is one of my favourite TV presenters, George Clark: ‘I’m delighted to be working with English Rose, a brand that’s genuinely passionate about good design and great British craftsmanship.’ You may not meet George Clarke at Pentagon, but Gary, along with Andy Fogarty and Phil Marshall, can give you all the help and advice you need with a free design service and no-obligation quote. And while you’re there, check out the tile department to give those finishing touches to your new kitchen.

FOOD & DRINK

Latest trends and seasonal produce Words by Trizia Clarke, Trizia’s Italian Kitchen October is a cooks dream. I can lose hours in the kitchen thinking up ideas of what to do with the huge bag of apples a friend has left by my front door, or the 3 butternut squash I couldn’t resist stopping to buy at the honesty stall in St Mary. This month sees kale and celeriac and beetroot at there best, not to mention mushrooms of all shapes and sizes to take a creamy comforting risotto to new heights. When I was growing up, October meant a kitchen full of empty jars, washed and ready to fill with anything that could be boiled in vinegar and preserved in oil or turned into jam. I still make marinated mushrooms now, not because I have a glut of mushrooms but because we love them so much. They are wonderful as part of an antipasti platter or in a crusty roll with shavings of Parmigiano Reggiano and rocket leaves. It couldn’t be simpler; clean and chop a punnet of mushrooms, or leave them whole if you like. Place them in a saucepan and cover them with white wine vinegar. Some recipes suggest a 50/50 mix of water and vinegar but this is how my Mama always made hers, so I do the same. Boil the mushrooms for 10 mins, then drain through a sieve and leave to cool and dry off. When they are cool squeeze any excess water out of them and put them in a bowl. Season with salt and pepper, add 2 tsps of dried oregano and a tsp of dried chilli. Slice a clove or 2 of garlic very thinly and a bay leaf to the mix and stir everything together. Spoon into sterilised jars and pour in enough extra virgin olive oil to cover the mushrooms. Seal tightly and keep in the fridge for up to one month. Pickled and fermented foods are one of the new food trends and are described as gutfriendly foods that are thought to help with irritable bowel syndrome, bloating, fertility, immunity, low energy and probably eternal life. I don’t know

whether that’s true but I do believe that balance in all things is the key to a happy life. Preserved vegetables have always been part of our diet and they provide a wonderful contrast to all the sugar-laden, sweet things that seem to dominate the supermarket shelves. We know now that the vinegar that forms part of the process of pickling stabilises blood sugars and that has to be a good thing. Talking of good things… I decided to turn one of my butternut squash into gnocchi after some success using sweet potato instead of standard potatoes for one of our favourite dishes. It was delicious and I will definitely be making it again. Here is the recipe. Butternut Squash Gnocchi with kale, and a sage butter sauce A medium butternut squash Approximately 2 cups of flour 1 egg ½ cup of grated Parmegiano Reggiano, plus extra for topping Salt and pepper Approx 200g of trimmed and shredded kale (stalks removed) 50g butter A splash of olive oil small bunch of sage leaves Cut the butternut squash in half lengthways and with out removing the seeds, place the 2 halves face down onto a roasting dish and pop it into the oven for about 40 mins at 200c. Discard the seeds and skin and scoop all the flesh into a bowl to cool. When it has cooled, tip the whole lot into a clean tea towel and squeeze out as much liquid as you can. Pop it back in the bowl and add the egg, parmesan and seasoning, mixing well. Add 1 ½ cups of flour and mix well to form a dough. Add more flour if you need it. You should end up with a soft but not sticky dough. Cover with cling film and refrigerate for about 20 mins. Put a big pan of water on to boil

and when it is rapidly boiling add the kale for about 1 min. Meanwhile, heat a splash of olive oil in a large frying pan and add the kale as it comes out of the saucepan. Toss in the pan until tender and switch off the heat. Keep the water that you cooked the kale in. You will use this for the gnocchi later. Now you are ready to make the gnocchi. Take the dough out of the fridge and turn out onto a floured surface. Divide it into about 8 pieces. Roll each piece into a long sausage about a finger in thickness and then cut into 1 inch pieces. Continue until you have finished. You can shape the gnocchi if you like using the back of fork to make ridges but I didn’t bother. Turn the heat up under the saucepan of water until you have a rolling boil again and add the gnocchi. You may need to do this in batches depending on the size of your pan. They are cooked when they float to the surface. Scoop them off as they appear and toss

them into the pan with the kale. You can do all of the above in advance if you like and refrigerate it at this point until you are ready to serve. (If you have more gnocchi than you need, put them on a baking sheet, spread out so that none are touching and freeze them. Once frozen you can pop them into a freezer bag and store them for a later date.) When everyone is seated at the table and ready to eat, put the pan back on the heat and make a big space in the centre. Throw in the butter and when it is sizzling, add the sage leaves and fry them until crispy. Now mix everything together and cook until they are a little crispy on the outside. Serve immediately with grated Parmigiano Reggiano or crumbled feta or for a milder fresher taste, some fresh goats cheese. I hope you love this as much as we do. If you’re wondering what I did with the rest

of the butternut squash, I made a butternut squash chilli with some of it. This is so good with all the usual accompaniments like guacamole, sour cream and salsa. I just chop the butternut squash quite small and substitute it for the minced beef in a traditional recipe. The rest went onto a homemade pizza along with red onions, spinach and fontina cheese. With some pickled green beans on the side. Yum. Whether you like to spend time in your kitchen or not, I hope you enjoy some of the amazing produce Jersey has to offer this month, In the meantime, ‘Mangiare bene, stare bene’ (eat well, to be well) For more recipes and information about my courses, take a look at my Facebook page, Trizia’s Italian Kitchen. A gluten free diet, not what you think In recent times there's been a real highlight on gluten and more specifically gluten-free diets, a trend, which has been booming in the past couple of years. The idea has caught on with many people thinking that gluten free is healthy and that ditching bread is good for you. However, gluten-free diets are not for everyone and here's why. We look into what gluten is, what foods contain gluten and whether or not a gluten-free diet could be right for you, busting some myths along the way with expert advice from Kirsten Crothers, a Gut Health Dietitian & BDA Spokesperson. Why gluten is important for your health So, firstly gluten is mentioned so often, but what is it? Kirsten describes it simply as 'a protein found in wheat, barley and rye'. This protein is perfectly natural and in most normal diets actually incredibly important. 'The products that gluten is found in are also sources of dietary fibre, which can help to reduce your risk of bowel cancer, diabetes and will help with weight loss. So excluding them unnecessarily could contribute to poor health.' And that's not the only reason gluten can be important for your health, as 'wheat and barley, which contain gluten, also contain inulin,' says Kirsten. 'Inulin is a prebiotic (good gut bacteria food). Avoiding these

foods could negatively affect gut health,' she explains So, if gluten can actually be good source of fibre and vital for your gut health, then why would start a glutenfree diet? In the majority of cases a glutenfree diet is a diet undertaken with anyone living with coeliac disease. Kirsten, who is a coeliac herself says: 'Gluten causes an autoimmune response in their body (their immune system wrongly attacks gluten) this results in damage to their gut. 'This damage can result in malabsorption, anaemia, osteoporosis and even bowel cancer if it continues to happen'. Misconceptions about a gluten free diet Some of the many foods that contain gluten are breads, pasta and cakes and also beer. There's a misconception that living a glutenfree diet means weight loss – but gluten-free alternatives to these sorts of products can actually be made up of a higher fat, sugar or salt content to enhance their flavour. Kirsten has suggested healthier alternatives to be nuts, seeds, fruit, vegetables, quinoa, brown rice, gluten-free brown breads, and gluten-free pasta made from brown rice.

Gluten is actually found in many things you might not quite expect, like sauces and malt, but any ingredients that include gluten must be clearly stated on the packet. Kirsten recommends downloading a free gluten-free food checker app called coeliac UK, to scan the barcodes of certain products for a detailed description of whether or not they contain gluten. Although restaurants are slowly incorporating gluten-free diets into their menus and thinking, they're still not there yet so it's always best to double check with the staff. But if you're tempted to go gluten-free because you think it's good for your health – don't. 'Unless you have coeliac disease or a non-coeliac gluten sensitivity there are no health benefits to avoiding gluten,' says Kirsten.

FOOD & DRINK

Craig Davies welcomed as Guest Chef for seasonal pop up

The difference between a Foodie and an Eatie… Have you seen people that take pictures of their food or people that just know a food would be bad before they have even tried it? Then you have probably met a foodie and an eatie before. These are two very different people who feel very differently about food. When you know the difference, you will understand why you should never call them by the wrong name. The Difference Between A Foodie And An Eatie Is: Foodies never paint a realistic picture of nonfoodies They regard the non-foodie as barely human, a grub-worm shaped mass of emotionless flesh who can never grasp the importance of an extra dash of a certain spice, or the added flavour that cooking meat a certain way provides. To foodies, all non-foodies exist to ruin potentially great resources. Maybe that’s why they Instagram so many pictures of food. They

want a record of it when all of the food is lost, devoured by callous non-foodies in their violent quest for simple sustenance. Foodies fear you’re enjoying food the wrong way If you find yourself invited to dinner by a foodie, unless you are ready and willing to agree with everything they say and absorb every bit of “knowledge” that they leak out, they will assume that they are doing you a favour. Without the foodie’s help, those friends will go down the wrong path in life — or worse — the wrong aisle in the supermarket. A foodie will assume that they are providing a warm light in the

non-foodie’s cold, cold existence. They will fill up the non-foodie’s belly with tastes that they have never before experienced, and happiness that they’d never dreamt of feeling. The eatie wants to eat The eatie can enjoy a great meal just as easily as the foodie can. The biggest difference is that the eatie may not tell anyone about it. An eatie allows food to happen They don’t feel the need to filter everything through the query, “Is this good enough for me, but more importantly, is this good enough for Insta?” They can enjoy things as they are. Eaties will also cook their own food if they decide that they want to, which is another thing that foodies will deny ever happens. An eatie is not driven on a mission to impress themselves and others with their extensive knowledge of the right and wrong ways to prepare and enjoy their food. TRAVEL

Airport retail is taking off While traditional bricks and mortar retailers have been showing continued yet steady growth for the past few years, there’s a notably different story taking place in our airports. Words by Hannah Carolan

So, with the number of airport extensions and refurbishments growing to accommodate the increase in footfall and passengers impatient to get through security early, airport retailers are in the best position to capitalize on their captive audience. But what strategies have airports implemented to further exploit their audiences?

With growing passenger volumes, higher disposable incomes and a rising emerging market spend, airport retailers are seeing a surging demand for luxury brands and stores in terminals. The global duty-free retailing sector is forecast by the market research firm Technavio to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 8.56% during the period 2017-2021. Further evidencing that premium luxury categories play a leading role in driving airport sales, their latest report* found that fashion goods, accessories, luxury items, cosmetics and fragrances accounted for 64.3% of total revenue generated in the global market last year.

Digital and technology developments Getting passengers to buy their duty-free products before they leave home is just one way airports are targeting cash-rich, time-poor

“These new and innovative service offerings help to Further reinforce the strong correlation between customer satisfaction and spend.”

customers. Heathrow’s advanced online ordering service can be used from one month to 48 hours ahead of flying and shows the 20 per cent discounts on offer when compared against the equivalent store’s high street prices. Passengers can browse through goods and enter their flight details to reserve items, including many from designer retailers such as Burberry and Valentino, at airport prices.

This not only helps to improve customer convenience, but also delivers a more effective and targeted sales experience, as retailers will then be able to use this captured customer data to match the product to their profile for future visits and purchases.

Big data

While digital and technology goods and services are continuously evolving, they can’t compete with the physical aesthetic experience; the instore environment is crucial to delivering both brand and product engagement. This experience is what stimulates purchases and drives customer loyalty. For this reason, airports have been quick to create engaging environments for shopping, dining, socialising, working and even pampering. These new and innovative service offerings help to further reinforce the strong correlation between customer satisfaction and spend. In

The growing intricacy of data capture in airports means that retailers can quickly understand what passengers are looking for. This opens up innovative ways to support sales through customer profiling, destination spend analysis and even checking a passenger’s movement around the terminals through Wi-Fi enabled technology.

Customer convenience

As well as the ability to now reserve and pre-order your shopping ahead of take-off, travellers are also able to shop from a range of products that will then be delivered to them on arrival at their destination.

Customer experience

2017, consumers are arguably exposed to too much choice, hence why passengers are keen to seek out unique experiences. From sideline to strategic priority, the future of airport retail will continue to fly high for the foreseeable future. *Global Duty-Free Retailing Market 2017-2021

TRAVEL

Protect your adventures with travel insurance Travelling can be an unforgettable experience, whether crossing the Channel or flying to Australia. You take in other cultures, sample foreign cuisines and potentially even marvel at exotic animals. Whether you need a week in the sun or a few days skiing at The Insurance Emporium we know holiday problems can be disruptive and costly. Read our guide on the four levels of cover which could keep you protected on your travels.

BUDGET

Every holidaymaker’s wish is to travel smoothly, however some of us aren’t so lucky. Delays are common and enough to cause upset, but with our Budget policy you could receive up to £10 for every 12 hours you are delayed, with a maximum benefit of £100. So lunch could be on us!

SILVER

Although it’s rarely something you expect to happen, we’ve all heard the stories of luggage vanishing and when such things don’t go to plan and your possessions end up lost, our Silver policy provides cover up to £1,500 for your Personal Effects & Baggage, so at least you’ll have peace of mind if your suitcase ends up in Manchester rather than Manila!

GOLD

Whilst on holiday you might not actually plan to spend much time in your room because getting out and enjoying your adventure is what it’s all about, however, you won’t be exploring 24/7 and so if a chef accidentally sets fire to the hotel and leaves you without a bed, having the Gold policy will ensure that you’ve got up to £1,000 worth of Accommodation Cover, so you can sleep a little easier.

BLACK

Sometimes a trip away from the daily grind is just what you need to refocus and we all know that holidays can be great for relaxing. But at the end of the day, your health is the most important thing to you and your family and if you’re suddenly forced to cancel your trip due to an unforeseen illness, having the Black policy could cover you for up to £7,500 and let you concentrate on getting better, rather than worrying about holiday expenditures.

SKI HOLIDAYS DIRECT FLIGHTS FOR FEBRUARY HALF TERM SKI HOLIDAYS

Allez Ski promised a ‘revolution’ in value-formoney, family-friendly ski holidays and that is exactly what has happened. In the few weeks since the holidays have been available, more than 25 Jersey families have rushed to book the specialist tour operator’s exclusive February half-term package to Chamrousse in the French Alps which departs on Saturday 10 February 2018. A quick look at Allez Ski’s infopacked website reveals four big reasons why their holidays are so family-friendly and have been snapped up so quickly: 1. family-friendly flights 2. family-friendly transfers 3. family-friendly resort 4. family-friendly apartments The direct flights to and from Grenoble – ‘the gateway to the Alps’ – is a massive tick in the box and means that islanders can avoid the hassle of travelling via Gatwick and overnight hotels or going on the ferry and having to drive all of the way. The two-hour direct flights on Blue Islands’ ATR-72s are the perfect start and finish to the holiday. Chamrousse is the closest resort to Grenoble so the transfers will be as quick as possible. This is especially important during the French school holidays when the roads to some resorts can often be busy. The team behind Allez Ski have spent years hunting for the perfect resort and they were thrilled when they discovered

Chamrousse. It is an absolute gem. It has more than 90km of pistes ranging from gentle nursery slopes to the iconic Olympic Downhills to fun snowparks. 16 lifts link up 41 different run so no two ski days need ever be the same. There’s loads of après ski too including ice-skating, snowmobile tours and husky rides. Chamrousse will be throwing a big party in 2018 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of when it hosted the ski events at the 1968 Winter Olympics. After discovering the best resort, Allez Ski then set out to find the best accommodation and they have done just this. The modern self-catering apartment at Les Villages du Bachat are ranked #1 by TripAdvisor. Regular skiers, particularly those with children, know that finding accommodation close to ski hire, ski lifts and ski school is skiing's holy grail. All of Allez Ski's apartments are a snowball's throw from all three of them! A supermarket, a choice of bars and restaurants and a free-touse outdoor swimming pool (heated!) are also close by. And if all of these familyfriendly features weren’t reason enough to book, Allez Ski has a special offer at the moment where everybody gets a FREE ski pass worth up to £159. There’s also 30% off ski hire. Be quick if you want to book, the holidays are selling fast! Website: allezski.com Telephone: 01481 259769

HOME LIVING

New estate agent looking for all kinds of properties Graham Hoare recently set up Grays - a competitive, friendly estate agency. Graham was born and raised in Jersey from Londoner parents who came to the island in the early 60’s. His parents Don and Pam Hoare were well known in the 60’s and 70’s for owning one of Jersey’s most successful hotels: The Old Court House in Gorey. Graham still regularly gets people saying to him, “Are you Don and Pam’s son ?, I remember them so well.”

Graham went to Victoria College and then onto Highlands College to learn the Hotel and Catering industry and then became a Hotel and Restaurant manager both here in Jersey and in Norwich. More recently after being Sales Manager for a major German car franchise, Graham went to live in Canada for 5 years, working in both car sales and restaurants. He got married and then returned to his home island.

Since returning to the island in 2008, Graham has been working as a real estate agent, in fact he started the day after the financial crash, and 9 years later he is still in the industry, spending 8 of those years in the top agencies learning as much as he could; he has now realised his dream of owning his own agency, continuing to give his vendors and purchasers the same level of service they have received and expected over many years. The name Grays came about as many of his friends and family have known him by Gray most of his working life. If your looking for a honest agent, to work hard for you at a very competitive commission fee, contact Graham on 07797765036 or graham@grays.je www.grays.je.

Prince Charles might not live in Buckingham Palace Buckingham Palace has served as the official London residence of the British monarch since the accession of Queen Victoria in 1837. Yet this may not be the case when the Prince of Wales takes to the throne. Prince Charles is keen to give up Buckingham Palace as the main royal residence when he becomes king, sources have told The Sunday Times. The prince is said to be 'very comfortable' at Clarence House, his current London home, and according to the newspaper, he believes the palace is 'too large and costly for modern family life' and is 'not sustainable' from an environmental point of view. 'I know he is no fan of "the big house", as he calls the palace,' said a source. 'He doesn't see it as a viable future home that's fit for purpose in the modern world. He feels its upkeep, both from a cost and environmental perspective, is not sustainable.' He is said to agree with his father that the 775-room palace is too big and too expensive to run. The sources added that Charles would rather use it as a royal office while making it more accessible to the public. The palace is currently open to visitors from late July until October

while the Queen takes her summer break at Balmoral, but it might become a museum and open for longer periods in the future. 'It makes perfect sense commercially to offset the costs of running such a big place by extending availability to the ticketbuying public,' a source added. No changes to the running of the palace are expected to take place while the Queen is alive. A Clarence House spokesman told the newspaper: 'Buckingham Palace will remain the official London residence of the monarch.'

Although it's not yet clear where Charles, who also lives at Highgrove House in Gloucestershire, when he is king, it's likely he will still use the palace to host state occasions and receptions. Buckingham Palace is currently undergoing a 10-year refurbishment costing an estimated £369 million, the Royal Household confirmed last year. The Queen will remain in residence at her official London home throughout the refit, which involves repair work that is urgently needed to ensure the safety of the royal family.

Meet Kevin Crozier, Artisan Iron Artisan Iron was recently launched by Kevin Crozier, we asked him a few questions about his new business. Hi Kevin, tell us about your new business... Artisan Iron was born a few months ago and is Jersey's newest ironworks. I specialise in creating bespoke gates, railings, garden sculptures and basically designing and creating anything made of metal! I want to be able to work with my customers to create the bespoke design they are looking for, no matter how big or small the job is. I have recently been accepted into The Guild of Master Craftsmen so customer satisfaction is at the heart of what I do and it’s important to me that my customers are happy and receive an exemplary service right from the first meeting, throughout the whole process.

Who is involved? Do you have a team or do you work alone? At the moment it is just myself (and my very supportive wife!) but i hope to expand and take on an apprentice in the near future.

What is your background? I was in the business with the same company for 19 years after leaving school. I then took a break from the trade for 4 years after my son was born to be a stay-at-home dad, but now he’s at school I felt it was the right time to start working for myself. My friends were having some building work done and asked me for some help in designing their balustrades and it reignited my passion to create iron work, so i set up Artisan Iron.

What are your plans for the future of the business? I have recently purchased a forge, which is due to arrive next week and I will be attending blacksmith courses over the coming months so I am hoping to become a blacksmith and combine it with my welding and fabrication to really embrace the artistry of metal work.

Had you always planned on setting up on your own? I have always wanted my own business and after having my career break it seemed like the perfect time to start up my own business and work for myself. Do you have anywhere people can view your previous work? We have a Facebook page and a website which is currently under construction, www.artisan-iron.co.uk
