Mon Vie...New life into old premises!

Gloucester Hall FORT REGENT / JERSEY

Wednesday 23rd April 2014 Tickets - £27.50 BOX OFFICE - 449827

The inspiration behind Mon Vie is husband and wife team Bradley and Nicola Nicolle. We have years of experience within the retail, restaurant and bar sector as well as childcare and youth work. After studying at university for a number of years in Hospitality and Catering we feel that the time is right to collate all our knowledge and resources and open a family friendly restaurant in the heart of St Helier. As a married couple with children of our own we have noticed a decline in the quality of food for children within St. Helier and Jersey to a wider degree and feel that we can recreate the feel good factor of family friendly establishments of yesteryear such as Broadway and Central Park. We have employed a total of 21 staff of which 8 have been through the Hospitality Scheme run by Social Security and a further 10 who were unemployed, so in total we have created 18 new Jobs. We are open from 9 in the

morning until 11.30 at night Monday to Friday and we open at 8 in the morning at the weekend to serve fresh & healthy breakfasts, as well as the classic English Breakfast And then close and 11.30. We have a secure play area suitable for all ages with toys and entertainment. We offer a wide range of sandwiches and light lunch-

es during the day suitable for families and business people alike. From 5pm we offer a wonderful selection of different styles of food freshly prepared by our very experienced chefs. We also offer gluten free and lactose free products upon request. Our children’s menu offers a range of freshly prepared

food. We can cater for parties or occasions by request. Please visit our website monviejersey.com or check us out on Facebook or Twitter to see what we have and to find out more. To book a table please call 509839 and we will see you there. Menu’s on page 7!!

Cycle helmets for under 14’s The Minister for Transport and Technical Services has lodged the draft Regulations which is the first step to making cycle helmets for under 14 year olds compulsory. The Road Traffic (No. 60) (Jersey) Regulations 201have been drafted and will give the TTS Minister power, by Order, to require children to wear protective helmets when on a pedal cycle on a road or cycle track. The draft Law is likely to be debated in late April. Subject to the Regulations being approved by the States, the Minister can then make the Order detailing the requirements for wearing helmets and policing the Law. The Minister in-

tends to allow a period of two months before the Order comes into effect to publicise the requirements and for parents to obtain cycle helmets for their children if they have not already got them. In 2010, the States agreed to support Deputy Andrew Green’s proposition that asked the Minister for Transport and Technical Services to bring forward legislation “to ensure that cyclists were required to wear a suitable safety helmet whilst cycling in the case of persons under the age of 18 years.” The following year however, after discussions with Deputy Green, the age limit was lowered to under 14 years old and the States were informed of this.

Channel Island’s classes are voted Britain’s best! TWO local adult classes have been named among Britain’s best in a prestigious national competition. The two classes – YogaBellies Mum and Baby Yoga Guernsey & Mrs Muddles Craft Sessions in Jersey – both scooped top awards in the Classes For You competition, run by Britain’s biggest parenting site Netmums. The UK-wide competition was launched as a chance for people running adult classes to be recognized for their hard work serving and improving the local community. Over 1.7 million parents were eligible to vote in the competition. The winning classes in each area will be hon-

oured with a coveted gold listing on the Netmums site, along with a special ‘Netmums Favourite’ certificate to display in their class, plus a badge for their website and a place on the Netmums Award Winners pages. Local Netmums Editor Karen said: “While there are lots of awards for children’s classes, we wanted to ensure the hardworking people who run classes for adults were not forgotten. Netmums members praised their sense of community and told how they’d made lots of new friends by taking the classes, so we are delighted to crown them The Channel Island’s favourites.”

La Fevrerie bequeathed to The National Trust for Jersey The National Trust for Jersey is delighted to announce that it has been bequeathed a historically important farmhouse in the Parish of St Saviour. Located along La Route de Maufant, the main 5 bay 2 storey house dates from the mid to late C19 and includes a rear farmyard with an impressive range of surrounding outbuildings. It is also believed that there was an earlier building on the site. The property has been bequeathed by the late Mrs Yvonne Genée, al

though it was also the wish of her late husband Gordon Genée, that La Fevrerie should be left to the National Trust. Mr and Mrs Genée purchased the property in 1982 and set up a dairy farm with approximately 40 head of cattle. They developed the successful “Countess” cow family line, which still goes on today within Paul Houzé’s herd. Mrs Celia Jeune, President of The National Trust for Jersey, commented: The National Trust for Jersey is deep

ly honoured that Gordon and Yvonne Genée should have chosen to place this very special property within our care for the benefit of the Island. Such bequests are both an enormous privilege and responsibility, and the Trust will make every effort to ensure that La Fevrerie is cared for in the same impeccable way that Mrs Genée and her family have done over the last 30 years.

Rotary de la Manche's round the Island walk is now in its 23rd year and Collas Crill has picked up the baton to continue the great tradition of what has become one of the Island’s largest fund raising events. The walk is an amazing community event involving more than 18,000 walkers raising over £1,800,000 since 1991 with every penny raised being distributed to local charities. The Collas Crill Island Walk, in conjunction with Rotary de la Manche, will continue the great tradition of the walk. Collas Crill senior partner Nuno Santos Costa said: “We are delighted to be supporting the Island Walk. Not only is it one of the biggest events in Jersey’s charity calendar, benefitting a range of good causes each year, but

it is a fantastic personal challenge for the thousands of people who take part. “Rotary and Itex have established an amazing community event. The Collas Crill Island Walk, in conjunction with Rotary de la Manche, will continue to be a real community event. We are looking forward to working with Rotary to continue their great work.” Nuno Dionisio club president of Rotary Club de la Manche, and Paul Owen chairman of the Island Walk Trust said: “We look forward to working with Collas Crill to ensure the tradition of the Island Walk has a long and fruitful future and are delighted to be supported by a local firm that has a long tradition in Jersey. “Collas Crill and Rotary can build upon the legacy of a walk that brings

the Island community together, as well as visitors from abroad. Together, we will ensure this community event continues to support good causes long into the future.” The 2014 walk starts at 3am on Saturday 21st June from Elizabeth Terminal at the Harbour and hugs the entire coastline of Jersey - a total of 48.1 miles passing along Jersey’s beautiful coastline, sandy beaches, dramatic cliffs and stunning countryside. If you want to join in the fun and the challenge, register online at www. ccislandwalk.com. You could also register for a shorter challenge (12 miles) and walk with the Lieutenant Governor starting from le Braye at 1pm the same day and finishing at the Waterfront.

New range of degree courses to attract more ‘home-grown’ nurses and midwives New degree courses enabling Jersey students to train for careers as midwives, mental health nurses or children’s nurses will be launched later this year. Applications are invited for a total of 10 places on courses that commence in September 2014. Combining off-Island study with practical work experience in Jersey, the three-year courses will be delivered in partnership with the University of Chester. The new courses follow the introduction of a pre-registration Nursing Degree on island in 2013, namely a BSc (Hons) Nursing (Adult Field), which has yearly intakes in September. The Health and Social Services Department (HSSD) has worked with States of Jersey colleagues from Education, Sport and Culture and Careers Jersey to enable this innovative model to come to fruition. It is the first time midwifery students and child field nurses have had the chance to access a place on the programme on the Island,” said Julie Mesny, Head of Nursing and Midwifery Education. “This is a significant milestone and we are very excited

about the prospect of being able to offer this combined model of degree. “HSSD has been offering the mental health field student programme for the past eight years, however, this degree course is also a new model for the Island.” Jane Harris, Deputy Head of Midwifery, Faculty of Health and Social Care at the University of Chester, said: “We are delighted to be working in partnership with Jersey to provide an established, innovative and well evaluated programme of Midwifery education. For the past two years the programme has scored 100% satisfaction rating in the National Student Survey. “It’s fair to say there has been a surge of interest in careers in midwifery and on average we have 700 applicants for the course, which equates to 25 applicants for each place, making a highly competitive area.” Expressions of interest for four places as student midwives, two student children’s nurse positions and four student mental health places are now being invited. Anyone who is interested should contact Julie Mesny, email j.mesny@health.gov.je

Pianist named 22nd PwC Jersey Young Musician of the Year

Pianist Lillian Garnier has been named ‘PwC Jersey Young Musician of the Year 2014’ in the 22nd anniversary year of the competition. Beaulieu Convent student Lillian fought off competition from five other finalists in the competition, which took place on Saturday 8 March at the Jersey Opera House. She becomes the ninth pianist to win the competition in its 22 year history. To win the title, Lillian performed a short programme of music that included four pieces ranging from Beethoven to Gershwin. As well as being awarded the PwC Jersey Young Musician of the Year Trophy and a cheque for £200, Lillian also received a trip for herself and a friend or family member to attend a concert of her choice in the UK and has been invited to give a recital in the summer at the Jersey Arts Centre. In addition, finalist Nicole Taylor (percussion) was presented with the

Jersey Symphony Orchestra Award for an outstanding performance, which this year was adjudicated separately for the first time. Dr Graham Cox, Head of the Jersey Music Service, said: “It was a lovely evening. We had one of the biggest audiences we’ve ever had for the final and it was just about a full Opera House. There was an incredibly high standard among all the finalists and a really varied programme. Lillian really captured the audience and took them on a wonderful journey.” Karl Hairon, Partner at PwC, commented: “The standard of performance from all six finalists was once again outstanding. This competition has a great track record of inspiring many participants to drive forward with their musical careers and I am sure there are a number in this year’s competition who will go on to experience tremendous musical success. They should all be very proud of their achievements.”

Jersey Coders launches to overwhelming demand from Teenagers A new after-school club, Jersey Coders, has been overwhelmed by demand from teenagers wanting to join and learn coding and IT skills. The club, which is the only one on the island aimed at teenagers, has had to start a waiting list for new members, and now needs more mentors to help with the demand. The club was set up by a parent frustrated by the lack of opportunity for technically minded teenagers. It is a not-for-profit charity that is aiming to inspire the island’s young people and ensure Jersey has a strong digital future. The club is completely free thanks to sponsorship from JT and the support of Digital Jersey. Second-hand laptops have also been generously donated by C5, BNP Paribas and FCJ school. Jersey Coders’ founder and Chair, Gwyn Garfield-Bennett said it has been an exciting start to the club: ‘We have a fantastic group of mentors who are sharing their knowledge and enthusiasm with the club mem-

bers, but we need more as I am being emailed daily by parents of teenagers wanting to get involved. We’ve got two informal groups within the club, one group is working on website design and the other is learning how to code games. We need more mentors, particularly with gaming skills, willing to give up just a couple of hours a week, to come

and share their enthusiasm and knowledge with the teenagers.’ The club meets one evening a week, and there is an informal and relaxed structure to the sessions with teaching and practice sessions. Members will be encouraged to work on their own projects with mentor help and expert guidance. During the year there will be competitions

and prizes and it’s hoped a Hackathon will be arranged. Teenagers interested in putting their name on the waiting list are invited to register their interest at www.jerseycoders.com. Those interested in becoming mentors are asked to also register their interest at www.jerseycoders.com or email: gwynjs@aol.com.

Another record breaking year for the Jersey ‘By Invitation Only’ charity luncheon Jersey ‘By Invitation Only’ (BIO) is a registered nonprofit organisation which holds a ladies only charity luncheon on the second Saturday of March each year to help raise greatly needed funds for two fantastic charities: ‘Jersey Teenage Cancer Trust’ and ‘Jersey Hospice Care’. Over 250 ladies attended the last luncheon which took place at The Royal Yacht Hotel on Saturday 8th March 2014. With ticket and merchandise sales, a raffle and donations an incredible £12,911.06 was raised which will be divided between the two charities. This year the luncheon happened to fall on ‘International Women’s Day’, so it was the perfect excuse to share a lovely lunch and raise lots of money for fantastic local charities! Emma-Louise Nash, founder and sole organiser of the Jersey BIO luncheon’s said ‘the success of the luncheons has been overwhelming and this couldn’t be achieved without the support of the ladies

and have raised a total of £48,639.30, so thank you to everyone who has supported over the years.’ The luncheon is not only a great way for ladies to stay in touch by promising to meet just once a year and enjoy a lovely lunch, it’s also a means of raising much needed funds for a worthy cause.

Turn your body into a fat burning furnace! Our bodies tend to naturally burn fat as a fuel source, but have you ever wondered if you can train your body to burn fat more efficiently? I want to share some great ways you can help your body to become a better fat burning machine! So often in our busy lives, we want to hear about the ‘quick fixes’ or shortcuts to achieving our health and fitness goals. But sometimes, taking a little extra time and planning your fitness routine in advance can get you better results and help you burn fat faster. With extremely limited spare time, I was never a fan of any type of endurance style training. The idea of walking or running for more than 60 minutes sounded like torture! After having kids I can honestly say that I now look forward to my longer training days. I have my music playlist ready and I truly enjoy my alone time! Here are our Top 5 tips to changing your body fat percentage Endurance training Try to make time for long cardio workout sessions at least once a week. Running, walking or cycling at a comfortable pace for an extended period of time is a great way to ensure that your body is burning fat. I believe that spending 60-90 minutes focusing on yourself each week is also healthy for your emotional wellbeing. HIIT Training I am a huge fan of interval style training because of the post workout fat burning effects. During a high in-

tensity interval workout, your body is using carbohydrate as a fuel source but the recovery process will burn fat. Interval style training takes less time than steady state training; and you can get incredible fat burning results from doing just a 30-minute workout. Try to train in this style two days per week. Strength training Building lean muscle mass will help you to burn more calories even while resting. It takes more calories for your body to sustain lean muscle mass than it does to sustain fat, which means building muscle makes you a better fat burner long term. Try to train in this style for 30 mins two days per week. Fuel Effectively Focus on ensuring you have a good balance of carbohydrates, healthy fats and protein every day. To stay hydrated drink between 2-3litres of water per day. Rest During rest, your body adapts to the demands that you place on it. If you’re working hard five days a week, using two days to allow your body to recover and regenerate is a good idea. Being balanced with your exercise routine and personal nutrition is the perfect plan to become a more efficient calorie and fat burner long term. Remember: “doing something will always get you better results than doing nothing at all!”

HIIT Fitness – Is Are your Kids in need of this the future? motivation to become more active? Variety is the spice of life. This saying definitely applies to effective exercise…and High Intensity Interval Training, or HIIT, has variety in spades! I believe finding a good workout balance is key, and a HIIT workout with a customizable mix of cardio, resistance training and stretching might help you meet your fitness goals. Today, I want to talk about spicing up your workout routine by adding in High Intensity Interval Training, or HIIT. While a HIIT workout may sound intimidating, most HIIT enthusiasts will be the first to tell you that it’s much more fun than plodding along on a treadmill – not that there’s anything wrong with that, if you enjoy it! – and a typical HIIT workout can give your great results in less time. Sound too good to be true? Not when you learn how HIIT works! A typical HIIT workout involves exercising intensely for short periods, followed

by periods of rest or lowerintensity exercise. Think about the way a car uses fuel; you get the best petrol mileage when you travel at a steady pace without braking or accelerating. Your car burns petrol more quickly, though, when you have a lot of stop-and-go traffic, or when you’re revving your engine waiting for the light to turn green. It takes less time to use up that fuel when you’re stop-and-go than when you’re cruising along the road at a steady speed. So, when it comes to HIIT, think of your body like you would a car. While a HIIT workout might not burn more calories than a traditional steady workout, you can burn an equivalent amount of calories in a shorter period of time. What’s not to love about that? If you feel like you’re ready to jump straight into HIIT training then take a look at the huge variety of classes Jersey has on offer or contact us to take you through a guide of what, where and when.

Mums and dads have dozens of concerns each day, ranging from a child’s performance in school to emotional development and happiness. Perhaps one of the biggest questions we should ask ourselves: Am I doing enough to keep my child’s heart healthy? At the base of your child’s success and well-being is a healthy body. And one of the most important focuses of health—especially in children—is the heart. A healthy childhood is about more than just eating vegetables and running around outside; by helping your son or daughter develop healthy habits, you are giving the gift of lifelong vitality. Start encouraging heart health young by working in healthy lifestyle choices— good nutrition, regular physical activity, plenty of sleep and low stress levels—and do the same in your own life. “Healthy, happy parents tend to have healthy, happy kids”

I want to talk about making physical activity part of our kids daily routines, not because of the external physical benefits that we tend to associate exercise with such as muscle definition and joint stability, but for something much more important, their confidence and their heart. We have done our research and found a fantastic Kids activity program that is designed for everything and more of what I have highlighted above. Welcome to HIIT Fitness

Kids. HIIT FITNESS KIDS – Our Monthly Interview How did HIIT FIT KIDS evolve? As children are becoming more and more sedentary and with childhood obesity rising at an alarming rate, there is a growing need to incorporate health and fitness into the lives of our kids. By laying a solid foundation of fitness ideals from an early age, we can reduce risk of disease, injury, and build a better future for our young ones. Since HIIT Fit Kids is a generalist program, our kids program follows a similar philosophy. We cover the broad skills and movements essential for life and athletics. We strive to make our kids program fun. What is HIIT FIT Kids? HIIT Fit Kids is entirely and absolutely geared toward kids fitness and their specific developmental needs. This program is run by HIIT Fitness Jersey and is the principal strength and conditioning program for many young individuals and the primary P.E. program for many schools throughout the UK. What is the objective for the kids taking part? The program delivers a fitness that is, by design, broad, general, and inclusive. The specialty is not special-

izing and keeping everything varied. Healthy living requires that our kids push, pull, run, throw, climb, lift, and jump effectively and safely regardless of whether or not they engage in athletic pursuits. The goal is to support the specialist areas that our kids are involved in, such as Rugby, Football and althletics but mainly reward the generalist.

The Teen classes are also great for those kids who many not think of themselves as athletic, but who still want to participate in activities that allow them to be active, physical and part of a welcoming group of peers. Many of our “non-athletic” teens have actually discovered their own athletic abilities through HIIT Fit Kids.

There are two age group classes, what are the differences? Little Athletes: 7-11 Year Olds This class lays the foundation for all future movements that our young athletes will encounter, whether it be sport-specific or fitness related. Athletes learn body awareness, coordination, and the fundamentals of gymnastics and strength training including forward/backward rolls, headstands, fun animal movements, different squatting/pressing/deadlifting modalities, push-ups and situps, and more. A sense of personal accomplishment is encouraged, as well as positive group interaction. Teens Program: 12-16 Year Olds Geared towards older kids, the Teen Program classes focus on developing teenagers’ athletic ability and building the skills, strength, endurance, speed, flexibility, agility and confidence needed to excel in any sport.

How long are the classes and where and what time are they held? All classes are generally 40 – 45 mins long. Sessions will run every Monday & Friday at 3.30-4.15pm

(for age 7-11) and 4.15-5.00pm (for age 12-16) at Grand Vaux Youth Centre. All Classes start on Monday 28th April – Limited spaces available How do our readers at Jersey Pages book onto these classes? Especially for all your readers, if they email me on the below details and quote “JERSEY PAGES” they will all be guaranteed a free weeks trial. Email: joe@hiitfitness.je Many Thanks to the team at HIIT FITNESS Jersey.

10 THINGS YOU MUST GIVE UP TO MOVE FORWARD!

1 – LETTING THE OPINION OF OTHERS DICTATE YOUR ACTIONS.

It’s not what others think, it’s what you think about yourself that counts!

2 – THE SHAME OF PAST FAILURES Your past does not equal your future All that matters is what you do now

3 – BEING INDECISIVE ABOUT WHAT YOU WANT

Ask yourself if what you’re doing today is getting you closer to where you want to be tomorrow

4 – PROCASTINATING ON IMPORTANT PERSONAL GOALS The best time to plant a tree is twenty years ago. The second best time is now!

5 –CHOOSING TO DO NOTHING

You don’t get to choose how or when you are going to die You can only decide and choose how you are going to live, right now!

6

– YOUR NEED TO BE RIGHT

Aim for success, but never give up the right to be wrong or fail. Failure guides the way for future success

7 – RUNNING FROM PROBLEMS THAT SHOULD BE FIXED Stop Running! Fix the problem, communicate, appreciate, forgive and love the people who deserve it

8 – MAKING EXCUSES RATHER THAN DECISIONS

Most long term failures are the outcome of those who make excuses instead of decisions

9

– OVERLOOKING THE POSITIVE THINGS IN YOUR LIFE

What you see often depends entirely on what you’re looking for

10 – NOT APPRECIATING THE PRESENT MOMENT IN TIME Too often we try to accomplish something big but the greatest achievements are made up of the little things!

You cannot change what’s going on around you until you start changing what’s going on within you!

Plasterboard recycling: Channel Island Air Search signs deal A deal to replace the search amended charge plane heavily damaged in Transport and Technical Services (TTS) is pleased to announce an amendment to the new plasterboard recycling charge, implemented on Monday 7 April 2014. Due to the success of ongoing trials, TTS will extend the commercial green waste charge of £19 per tonne (Inc. GST) to plasterboard rather than implementing the previously advertised plasterboard recycling charge of £101.40 per tonne (Inc. GST). From Monday 7 April, all commercial plasterboard must be delivered to the dedicated area at the Commercial Green Waste Composting Site at La Collette. All plasterboard must be free of contaminants such as foam and foil backing. All plasterboard will be inspected so that contaminated loads can be rejected. The plasterboard collected separately for recycling will be included in ongoing advanced trials of mixing the plasterboard with green

waste and composting this mix to produce a gypsum enhanced agricompost for local agricultural use. The use of recycled plasterboard gypsum as a soil conditioner is already common practice in the UK and indications from the work TTS has carried out with various States of Jersey departments and the agricultural industry are extremely positive. Emma Richardson-Calladine, Recycling Manager, TTS said ‘Recycling local waste plasterboard into a product that has a local benefit is extremely exciting and demonstrates how waste is a resource rather than rubbish. However, the success of this trial depends on the building industry as we will only be able to use clean plasterboard and unfortunately if we are unable to collect plasterboard that is free of foam and foil backing, we will have to revert to exporting plasterboard for specialist recycling and implementing the original charge.’

a crash on Jersey has been signed by Channel Islands Air Search. The Lion’s Pride Islander aircraft was searching for two fishermen when it crashed landed last November. All five crew were unharmed in the crash on 3 November and the fishermen were later rescued. Roger Dadd, charity founder, said a temporary replacement plane would be flying again soon. Mr Dadd said a deal had been signed with BrittenNorman, which will supply the After the crash the fishermen were rescued by a UK search & rescue helicopter temporary replacement that will have “limited technical capability”. He said the second Islander, which would “exceed the capabilities” of the Lions’ Pride, was being overhauled and should be ready in about five months. This would replace the first islander until a new plane, fitted with the latest technology, was built. Colin Ferbrache, chief officer, said: “The purchase of a new aircraft is an enormous undertaking and we know this could not be achieved without the tireless support of Channel Islanders.” A lack of fuel in the reserve tanks was found to have contributed to the crash

When it comes to our commercial vehicle range, we understand that saving money on fuel means more money to invest in the rest of your business. From advanced TDI diesel engines and BlueMotion Technology that saves even more fuel, to the latest DSG semiautomatic and 4MOTION® all-wheeldrive, learn more about the technology which makes our vans some of the best on the market.

third. As you shift upwards the sequence continues in a series of seamless moves. Because power is simply switched from one shaft to another, not only are gearshifts silky smooth, but they are also very fast - each change takes less than four-hundredths of a second. Want to take over? You can control the DSG manually. Nudge the Tiptronic gearlever forwards or backwards to change gear, or use the paddle shifts mounted on the steering wheel. DSG is available across most of our range and comes as standard on the Caravelle Business.

How does it work? The key word is ‘anticipation’. DSG is a groundbreaking ‘two-in-one’ concept. Available in a 7-speed version, it’s totally unlike a conventional automatic transmission. Twin electronically controlled shafts manage gear selection, always anticipating your next shift. When you turn the engine on and select Drive mode, one shaft selects first gear while the second shaft puts the next gear on standby. As the gearbox changes to second, the second shaft is engaged and the original shaft reaches

Silver: the forgotten metal?

UK Pension Proposals –

Impact for the Channel Islands

Private investors and intermediaries turned out for a GoldMoney breakfast seminar to hear about silver and why it’s the precious metal’s time to shine. Hosted by Martyn White, GoldMoney’s Head of European Business Development, the seminar explained more about silver’s role in the preservation of wealth and why it should be considered for inclusion in a diversified portfolio. Despite the title of the seminar Martyn said: ‘Silver is not forgotten, it’s very much in the minds of those in industry and investors. Recently we had a week in which our customers bought more silver than they did gold, highlighting its appeal and often overlooked advantages. ‘Although silver is more volatile in terms of price, if you had bought back in 2001, you

would be seeing a 14.5% average annual return against the major currencies. In 2010 alone it increased by 93% which is why it’s also attractive to traders who look to take advantage of that volatility in price. ‘We are seeing some issues over future supply, 70% of silver is produced as a secondary product of zinc and lead mining, and there are very few new mines being identified. We are also seeing a reduction in the amount being gleaned from scrap recycling, and as silver is an industrial metal used in mobile phones and consumer goods etc, with an economic recovery demand is set to rise. We know of a large car manufacturer which is storing thousands of tonnes of silver in a Swiss vault for that reason.’ The seminar also looked at the gold/silver ratio, which

is how much silver it takes to buy an ounce of gold. At present that stands at around 65.1, whereas the average for the past three years has been 55.1, indicating that silver is currently undervalued in relation to gold. Finally guests learnt how important it is to buy from a reputable dealer, and to buy investment grade physical metal rather than silver through an Exchange Traded Fund (“ETF”) which has a greater counterparty risk as many ETFs don’t hold the metal. Those serious about investing should buy fully allocated bullion stored in private vaults. The seminar took place at the Pomme d’Or. The next GoldMoney seminar is in May and focuses on Platinum & Palladium. For further information contact: hayley.dewar@goldmoney.com

The wide-ranging changes to pensions announced in the UK Budget on 19 March took the industry completely by surprise, and may have an impact in the Channel Islands. Announcements made by George Osborne resulted in a 55% fall in the share price of Partnership Assurance, one of the two suppliers of annuities to Channel Islands residents. And the proposals set out in the Chancellor’s speech could influence the pension reviews being conducted in both Jersey and Guernsey – particularly the proposal to make it no longer obligatory for people to purchase an annuity. BWCI Pensions Partner, Michelle Galpin, said: “I think the drop in insurers’ share prices was a knee-jerk reaction to the announcement that people will no longer be forced to buy an annuity. However, the Budget announcement does provide insurers with an opportunity to be innovative and design new products for this new pensions landscape.” Pensions are under review in both Bailiwicks, and the dramatic changes proposed in the UK may have an impact on politicians’ policy-making in Jersey and Guernsey. The changes could also mean that

the UK would have a more liberal system for taking retirement benefits than the Channel Islands, leading residents with UK pensions who had planned to transfer their benefits to the Channel Islands have second thoughts. BWCI Pensions Partner, Michelle Galpin, said: “This is a really fundamental change that nobody was expecting and there may be some unintended consequences. At first sight the ability to dip into your pension pot like a bank account appears attractive to those approaching retirement. However, there are already concerns being expressed that this could be storing up problems for the future, with more pensioners ultimately having to rely on State benefits in retirement if they do not manage their pensions pot well. They will also need to consider whether there are any adverse tax implications of taking their pension pot as a lump sum. “It is clear that these are only very high-level proposals but they could have far-reaching implications in the Channel Islands.” Full details of the proposals can be found at www.gov.uk/ government/uploads/system/ uploads/attachment_data/ file/293080/freedom_and_ choice_in_pensions_print.pdf

Skills training grant reaches its 100th application Launched by Skills Jersey in September 2013, the Skills Accelerator grant scheme has received its 100th application. Successful applicants are offered a grant of up to 75% of their total training cost – to a maximum of £5,000 – and each organisation is eligible to receive three grants per year. The response to the scheme indicates that local businesses are taking advantage of the opportunity to carry out a range of training, ensuring that their employees have the requisite skills to meet customers’ needs. Speaking about her experience of the

Scheme, Sarah Peel, director of local visual therapy company VisionWorks, said: “The Skills Accelerator was extremely easy to apply for. I was impressed with the speed with which my application was processed and with the guidance I received along the way from their staff. They really couldn’t have been more helpful. I would urge any small business that needs to train up staff, but lacks the funding, to look into this scheme.” Further information about the Skills Accelerator and how to apply can be found on the States of Jersey website: www. gov.je/SkillUp
