First Healthy Eating Week raises over £2,000 to help youngsters learn to cook and eat better Dozens of local businesses, individuals and school children have helped raise more than £2,000 to help youngsters in the Island learn to cook and eat better. Caring Cooks’ Healthy Eating Week ran from 12th to 17th June to raise both awareness and funds for its new ‘Let’s Get Cooking’ initiative, a big drive to get primary school children cooking healthy meals and to inspire them to make positive food choices from a young age. Local eateries including Flavour, Nude Food, Moo and Tiffin all had specials on offer during the week and donated a percentage of customers’ bills to the charity while La Cantina

restaurant put their specials on for the whole month of June. Sharing lunch was a big focus during the week thanks to Whitmill Trust who sponsored the ‘Let’s Do Lunch’ initiative which aimed to get businesses, groups and individuals to get social and share a meal, whilst raising money for the charity. The team at Whitmill also jumped in the saddle of the charity’s new ‘Smoothie Bike’ using pedal power to mix up a healthy fruity smoothie. Shoppers also put in some miles when Caring Cooks parked the bike in the active wear department of Voisins during the week. In addition to these activities, lots of

children got involved in the charity’s first ever food focused week, dressing up in capes to become ‘Healthy Heroes’ as part of a dress down fundraiser in schools around the Island. Melissa Nobrega, Caring Cooks Founder said, “We’re thrilled at just how successful our first ever Healthy Eating Week has been and we’d really like to thank everyone who has supported us. We’ve really raised awareness of the importance of the Let’s Get Cooking Programme. It’s giving the Island’s children the skills they need to prepare healthy meals from a young age and we hope they’ll grow up with this knowledge to pass on to their children. The Programme is already having a huge impact on children’s behaviours, attitudes and learnings and the money raised during Healthy Eating Week will make sure even more children get to benefit from it. It costs around £100 per child for a year and we’re determined that by 2025 we’ll have all 7,500 primary school pupils in the Programme.” The charity is now working on what to put on the menu for next year’s Healthy Eating Week!

A public inquiry to consider Future Hospital application The Minister for the Environment, Deputy Steve Luce, has decided to hold a public inquiry to consider the application for a new hospital for Jersey. The application, which has been accepted by the Minister without owner approvals, is to demolish Stafford Hotel, Revere Hotel, 3340 and 44 Kensington Place, including Sutherland Court, and parts of the General Hospital. This would allow a new hospital to be built with landscaping, highways and infrastructure works, including the addition of two half-decks of parking to Patriotic Street car park. Deputy Luce has made a decision to hold a public inquiry because the hospital application is for a significant piece of public

infrastructure and an inquiry provides a structured opportunity to explore the planning issues in depth, to ensure that it is consistent with policy and is the right decision for Jersey. By law, the Department for the Environment has to follow a set planning process to make sure that

it provides a fair and consistent service to Jersey. This process includes considering all planning applications – whether they come from individuals, companies or other States departments – in the same fair and consistent way, looking at all the relevant issues. The inquiry date has been set for November 6th and an independent inspector will be appointed. The Minister wants the inquiry to be an inclusive forum, to ensure an open discussion, with all parties able to present their opinions and have evidence tested before the inspector makes a recommendation. Islanders are being invited to have their say by 17:00 on Friday 8 September.

Minister publishes 2016 Annual Report The Minister for Social Security, Deputy Susie Pinel, has published the 2016 Social Security Annual Report. The report provides a comprehensive overview of the activities, improvements and initiatives carried out by the Social Security department last year. It also explains the legislative changes under the responsibility of the department, and gives detailed statistical information about contributory benefits, such as pensions, and tax-funded ones including Income Support. There is a wealth of information in the report however, some of the important messages are: • The Back to Work scheme contributed to the lowest level of unemployment in six years (1280) alongside a record number of people in employment. • The launch of a major Social

Security review. In 2016 the first part of the review took the form of a public consultation which raised awareness of how well people prepare for retirement and how we should meet the growing costs of pensions. • The Health and Safety Inspectorate introduced the Management in Construction (Jersey) Regulations in October – the most significant change in Health and Safety legislation for 27 years. • Discrimination legislation was extended to include age in September • The new Pension Plus scheme was developed to replace the 65+Health Plan, making an additional £200,000 per year available to low-income pensioners for dental, optical and chiropody care • A new, targeted Christmas Bonus was introduced to support low income pensioners plus adults and children with a disability living in low income households

Non local employment fees to be introduced Companies employing staff from outside the island will be hit with new fees. The States has approved charging £50 for every registered worker and £225 for licensed staff. It will raise £600,000 a year for the government and will be invested in training local people for local jobs. The Chamber of Commerce had warned against raising the cost of

doing business here. It is one of a number of new measures aimed at controlling the population, which is nearing 104,000. Ministers hope it will encourage firms to consider recruiting ‘entitled’ staff – who already have five years’ residency. The cost of a registration card rise will from £75 to £80.

Patrick Burke named in Hotel Designs’ top 25 Hoteliers Brit List The Atlantic Hotel’s owner and managing director, Patrick Burke, has been named as one of the UK’s Top 25 Hoteliers in the inaugural Brit List from Hotel Designs, the leading online news and analysis site for hoteliers and interior designers. The Brit List is a celebration of the most influential and inspirational individuals in the hotel and design industries. A process of peer nomination and a panel of industry expert judges compiled the final list of the Top 25 Hoteliers and the Top 25 Interior Designers. It features some of the names behind the UK’s most notable hotels. ‘It’s a great honour as a Jersey hotelier to have been recognised as one of the UK’s top 25 in the first Hotel Designs Brit List. The hotel industry is in my blood, with my father Henry long ago inspiring me to follow in his footsteps. I continue

to be influenced today by my peers and am privileged to work in a truly remarkable industry,’ said Mr Burke. Mr Burke has dedicated his career to the hospitality industry. After managing hotels across the UK and Europe, he succeeded his father as managing director of The Atlantic Hotel in 1987. Alongside this, Mr Burke has served as a director of Small Luxury Hotels of the World (SLH) since 1999, including three years as chairman from 2006-2009. In 2010 Mr Burke co-founded the Luxury Jersey Hotels (LJH) consortium, designed to attract new market segments to Jersey, and for the past seven years has served as chairman. He is also the sole Channel Islands member of the Master Innholders. The award of membership of the Master Innholders is open to practising hoteliers who have demonstrated

their innkeeping ability and continuing dedication to improving standards within the industry.

Local author turns to crime Local author, Gwyn GarfieldBennett has turned to crime. The former journalist has just published crime thriller, Lonely Hearts – Killing with kindness takes on a whole new meaning. Gwyn’s debut novel, Islands, came out last summer and sold well, attracting the interest of retailer, Amazon, which chose it for one of its Daily Deals earlier this year.

Islands has 107 reviews on Amazon and 89 of them are 5*. The book, set in Jersey, encouraged many readers to want to visit the island for a holiday. Lonely Hearts is already receiving rave reviews from readers and has started racing up the Amazon charts. The title is looking like it will eclipse sales for Islands. Someone's watching. Someone's Lonely. Someone's going to Die. Could it be You? Meet Rachel, she loves animals and works at a dating agency bringing lonely people together – only somebody is watching her every move and she’s scared… Neil didn’t see who killed him – but his murder brings DI Claire Falle on the case. What she uncovers leads her to discover a serial-killer is preying on the clients of the dating agency where Rachel works. Can Claire work out the connection between all the deaths before Rachel becomes the next victim? What is it in Rachel’s past that haunts her? As DI Claire Falle investigates the lives of

the dating agency staff and clients, she is pulled into a tangled web of loneliness and deceit which will have devastating consequences for someone... Gwyn said she had the inspiration for Lonely Hearts several years ago, “I actually started writing this book when I was working in London for ITN. I can remember when the idea for it came to me and I wrote the opening paragraph. It’s good to finally get the characters and their stories out of my head and on paper.” It’s been a busy year for the author who visited the London Book Fair for the first time this year and has seen her books ordered by bookshops across the UK as well as selling well in the local branch of Waterstones. Lonely Hearts is the first in a series with the next book due out towards the end of this year. It introduces Detective Inspector Claire Falle and is set in London and Norfolk. The second book in the series sees DI Falle returning to her home island of Jersey. Gwyn is also part of The Blonde Plotters, a trio of local authors including: Georgina Troy and Kelly Clayton. The three women are taking part in the Festival of Words

with an event at the Opera House on Saturday 30th September, 1.30pm-2.30pm. www. jerseyfestivalofwords.org/ author/?id=1701 The Blonde Plotters will also be holding a talk for writers as part of the Festival of Words. The talk takes a look at what publishing option might be right for your book, from traditional to independent. It’s taking place at the Jersey Library 1:10pm – 1:50pm on Thursday 28th September.

Calls to remove GST on fruit and vegetables Jersey's Consumer Council says removing the levy on healthy foods would encourage people to eat better. There are calls to make fruit and vegetables cheaper in Jersey, by removing GST. Shoppers currently pay a Goods and Services Tax, at a rate of 5%, but Jersey's Consumer Council says removing the levy on healthy foods would make them more affordable to islanders on a budget. The Consumer Council is not the first to try and influence the change, charity Caring Cooks made the same call earlier this year, arguing that making healthier options exempt from the charge would encourage people to eat better.

Chief Executive for States of Jersey A new Chief Executive for the States of Jersey has been appointed. Charlie Parker is currently the Chief Executive of Westminster City Council, where he has worked since 2013. In the last four years he has overseen the transformation of the Council during a time of significant change for local government. He has directed the reorganisation of many Council services, and overseen a successful OFSTED inspection in TriBorough Children’s Services which resulted in the only outstanding rating in the UK. Westminster also achieved the best 2016 GCSE results in Inner London. Mr Parker’s previous position was Chief Executive at Oldham Council, where he led the Council’s transformation from being the worst Local Authority in 2008 to the most improved in the country in 2012. He brought an estimated £500 million of investment into the town while introducing innovative service improvements and financial efficiencies of £140 million over a five

year period. His time there saw the Children’s Service being in the top half dozen nationally, and the finance service being one of the best across the whole of the UK public sector. Before joining Oldham Council Mr Parker was Director of Investment and Performance at English Partnerships and a member of its Executive Management Board. He was responsible for developing the Agency's Investment Strategy Corporate Plan and main corporate financial administration function. He also oversaw the Asset Management service, which included the former Commission for New Towns assets. His other previous posts have included Group Strategic Development Director at Enterprise plc, Executive Director for Regeneration at Liverpool City Council, and head of Manchester Council’s Inner City Department. The Chief Minister, Senator Ian Gorst, said “Mr Parker brings with him a wealth of experience in successful leadership, transforming

local government organisations and attracting inward investment. His proven success in running effective services for children and vulnerable adults and a high quality education service makes him a particularly suitable appointment at this time in Jersey’s history, when we have committed to working together to make substantial changes to our services and our organisational culture. Mr Parker has achieved these outcomes by building strong teams that work effectively together to achieve successful transformation. “I am confident that with his record of leading successful public sector organisations Mr Parker can support this government’s ambition to maintain Jersey’s successful economy, improve our productivity and invest in priority areas like health and social services and education to provide world class services for islanders.” Mr Parker said “I am delighted to be taking up this unique opportunity as Chief Executive for the States of

Jersey. I am looking forward to the exciting challenges of contributing to the continuing growth of the economy and supporting businesses in Jersey. I will continue the work of transforming the public sector to deliver great public services for the Island, maintaining Jersey as a prime

tourist destination and supporting local communities.” Mr Parker is a keen Manchester City fan and has two grown-up children. The appointment process for the new Chief Executive was run by the Jersey Appointments Commission with independent oversight.

New planning application for Les Quennevais School submitted A revised planning application has been submitted for a new Les Quennevais secondary school on the fields that border La Route de Quennevais. Issues raised by the independent planning inspector at a hearing in January have been addressed. As a result, the £40 million scheme now has a different traffic flow system and parking layout on site. The design of the school has also been changed to reflect comments of the Jersey Architecture Commission about the exterior appearance, use of materials and other technical elements. Education Minister Deputy Rod Bryans said 'The new Les Quennevais

School is well overdue and I am pleased that the project is moving forward. It will be the single largest investment in education for many years and I am delighted to see it entering the next phase. Parents, staff and students will be pleased to see it is progressing. 'I would like to thank the team at Jersey Property Holdings for their continued diligence on this important project and for sharing our enthusiasm to create a new school in the west.' Infrastructure Minister Deputy Eddie Noel said 'This is a large and complex building and my department has been working extremely hard over the past year and will continue to do

so to ensure we deliver a high-quality modern school.' The estimated build time for the new Les Quennevais School is two years from receipt of planning permission. The target date for opening to students remains September 2020. The site was the preferred option of 67% of people who responded to a public consultation in autumn 2015. The planning application plus the supporting documents will be available on this website once registered by the Planning Department. This investment of £40m is part of the planned £168 million which has been allocated to capital projects for the period of the Medium Term Financial Plan 2016-19.

Clients of Voisin Law enjoyed a unique ‘Fall Out Cocktails’ event Clients of Voisin Law were treated to some unique island history when they were invited for drinks at a special venue that once served as the Island’s Cold War bunker. The law firm, in conjunction with Jersey Heritage, hosted the event at the unusual location of an old bunker in Springfield Crescent on Trinity Road, close to Springfield Stadium. One of the family of Jersey Heritage sites, the bunker was once used as Jersey’s Civil Emergency Centre and Nuclear Monitoring Station. Guests mingled and enjoyed cocktails and canapés alongside the relics of a time when a secret team of Islanders worked in this small nerve centre, planning and preparing to protect Jersey from nuclear attack. They were given a tour of the bunker, built during the Second

World War as part of Hitler’s Atlantic Wall and enjoyed exclusive access to the main control room, tiny radio studio and viewed artefacts such as radiation suits and government communications of the time. Thanks to a talk by Professor Lucy Sullivan an expert in modern history from Sussex University, they also learnt more about the enormous impact this particular period had on life today. Voisins Law Managing Partner Ian Strang said: “We feel really privileged to be the first to host an event like this and are really grateful to Jersey Heritage for partnering with us and allowing us to enjoy an evening at such a unique venue. “Not only did we get to enjoy the company of our clients but we all got an insight into both local history and a dangerous time when there was a

real world threat of nuclear attack.” The bunker is not currently open to the public but Jersey Heritage plan to open it up for special tours in the future.

Another Asian hornet nest Another Asian hornet nest has been found in a garage in Rozel. It is the third to be discovered in the island, and comes just weeks after one at Fliquet. The invasive insect is a threat to honey bees, one Asian hornet alone is able to kill 50 bees in a single day. The Environment department is continuing to urge us to be vigilant

and report sightings so that nests can be destroyed before they are able to multiply. What to do if you suspect an Asian hornet: • check the Asian hornet ID sheet which outlines the main differences between the native European hornet and the Asian hornet

• don’t disturb an active nest – these are usually high in trees and man-made structures but sometimes closer to the ground in outbuildings or sheds • report your sighting. ‘Run4Justin’ and your loved one in this year’s Run4Men The Jersey committee of Cancer Research UK has teamed up with Islander Emma Cotillard to open the registration of this year’s Run4Men in memory of her husband Justin Cotillard. Justin Cotillard tragically passed away when he was 30 years old due to an aggressive form of brain cancer just months after marrying Emma and becoming dad to their baby daughter Mia. Emma hopes that this year’s Run4Men will be a poignant opportunity for Islanders to come together in memory of Justin and all those whose lives have been lost to cancer, as well as helping to raise vital funds for Cancer Research UK that will help beat the deadly disease. Emma Cotillard recalls the moment

when she first realised there was something seriously wrong with her husband: ‘Justin woke up one morning on our honeymoon and started screaming at me to get out of his room. He thought I was a stranger and didn’t remember that I was seven months pregnant with our first baby. We cut our holiday short and returned home where an MRI scan revealed that Justin was suffering from the deadliest form of brain tumour in adults, known as a glioblastoma.’ ‘Cancer is quite simply life destroying and it is something that we should all be trying to fight. I am pleased to be working with Cancer Research UK Jersey and hope that Run4Men will help to raise money for life saving research. It’s time for

everyone to sign up and take part not just for Justin, but for their loved ones.’ Sponsored by Jersey-based alternative finance firm Sancus, Run4Men is being held on Sunday 10th September 2017 and invites male participants of all ages and abilities to walk, jog or run the 5km or 10km routes. All runners will be provided with a commemorative CRUK race number and bib. The event will be timed for more competitive runners; the bibs will have an RFID timing chip and the results will be published on the CRUK Jersey website and Facebook pages. Warm up starts at 10:30 AM and the run starts at 11:00 AM from Les Jardins de la Mer, with water and marshal stations along the way. A post-run celebration will also be held at La Fregate café. Refreshments and entertainment will be available with profits going towards Cancer Research UK Jersey. Whether you are a runner or a spectator, Islanders are invited to come along in celebration of Justin’s life. Participants can sign up via Race Nation by visiting https://race-nation. com/run4men-2017. Registration costs £25 for adults and £10 for children under 16 years old and is open until Friday 8th September 2017. Registration is also available on the day of the run for £30 (adults) and £10 (children). In order to raise as much money as possible for Cancer Research UK, participants are also encouraged to raise sponsorship and place donations on RaceNation.

Richard Hughes, Chairman of Cancer Research UK Jersey, says: ‘We are honoured to be hosting Run4Men in memory of the loving husband, friend and father that Justin was. Justin was a very fit, amateur boxer when he began to experience symptoms that led to the discovery of his tumour. His story is a heartbreaking reminder of the destruction

that cancer can have on so many people’s lives. I would like to say a big thank you to Justin’s wife, Emma, who has demonstrated such strength, bravery and generosity by transforming such a difficult time in her life, into a story that can help to support others and inspire people to raise money that will help to save lives.”

‘Avoid the tunnel’ is the advice given he results of recent tests in Jersey's T tunnel confirm the air quality during peak times is poor. Environmental Health, part of the Department of the Environment, commissioned a specialist company to carry out the tests and report on the findings. Ricardo-AEA tested exposure to pollutants during rush hour in the tunnel for a pedestrian, a cyclist and a motorist in a closed car with windows open, closed, and with air vents off and on. The company tested for nitrogen oxides, and particulate pollution, both in vehicle emissions, particularly diesels. Levels of nitrogen oxide were also monitored over a three-and-a-half day period.

Ricardo-AEA also tested the air quality levels of the alternative pedestrian route via Snow Hill and found that air quality was much better compared to the tunnel.

To reduce exposure to poor air quality for people using the tunnel, Environmental Health advises: • drivers should close their windows and switch off air vents • when stationary, drivers should switch off engines to help reduce the level of pollution they're exposed to • cyclists and pedestrians should minimise the time they spend in the tunnel The alternative route to the tunnel, via Snow Hill, has significantly lower levels of pollution but increases the journey time for a pedestrian by approximately five minutes. Environmental Health will work with the Department for Infrastructure to review signage.

School leavers reminded of support available through Back to Work Young school and college leavers, who are looking to enter the world of work are being reminded of the support available to them. Advance to Work, a scheme within Back to Work, offer a range of services tailored to support young jobseekers aged 16 to 24 as they look to enter the employment market. Whether recently out of full-time education or facing problems finding a first job, Advance to Work can offer a combination of mentoring, training and work placements to help people into sustainable employment. Already this year, over 100 Advance to Work trainees have started a full-time job. Unemployed school leaver, Calvin Carroll, found full-time work with MasonBreese after taking part. Calvin said, “The Advance to Work Scheme benefitted me by giving me

interview experience, advice, and the skills to create a really good CV. I would advise any young people looking for work to join the scheme because it isn’t always easy to get a full-time job, especially if you haven't got experience.” Sarah Roberts, Office Manager at MasonBreese, has been working with Back to Work to find suitable candidates, she said, “Calvin is a real asset to our team. He is very technical and is working with data and system improvements. We have been really impressed by his skills, his work ethic and his ability to work with customers. “For young people, Advance to Work helps them to understand about the work environment and business etiquette: what it’s like to work in a business, how you should act, and what is appropriate behaviour. We can really see the

difference in candidates who have been through Advance to Work, particularly if they have taken the excellent business administration course. We’ve noticed their CVs are better, they are more confident and eloquent at interview, and they have a better understanding of what is expected of them. I think the oneto-one coaching they receive really makes a difference.” Mrs Roberts added, “For businesses, Advance to Work can help employers find young people who are right for the business. There is talent out there but sometimes it is difficult to find it; for young people, it can be hard to get the opportunity to demonstrate their skills. We’ve found that Advance to Work works best when the Back to Work team really understand what you do, and they have certainly taken the time to do this.” Deputy Graham Truscott, the Social Security Assistant Minister, said, “We recognise the challenges facing a lot of young people when trying to get that first step on the employment ladder. For many it is the lack of work experience that presents the most significant barrier

to employment. I would encourage anyone who feels they may benefit from the support of Advance to Work to get in touch by using our online application form.” Once they have joined the scheme, Advance to Work trainees will work with a dedicated employment advisor who will help them at every step as they move into

Drink drivers could face longer sentences People convicted of drink-driving could soon face longer jail sentences. The Infrastructure Minister is asking the States to agree to increasing the maximum prison term from six to 12 months. Drivers who refuse breathalyser tests would also face tougher punishments.

The proposal will be debated on the 12th of September, when politicians return from their summer recess. Meanwhile, work to catch people who drink and drive continues – despite the end of a recent Police campaign. Officers arrested 7 people in a fortnight. One was three times over

the limit and another had two young children in the car. Mark Hafey, Chief Inspector of Operations, says even one arrest is far too many. “Please if you are going to have an alcoholic drink whilst you are out – please make other arrangements to get home.”

FEATURE

Learn to surf: How to balance Sitting on a surfboard and pivoting is one of the first things you'll need to master when learning how to surf. It requires balance and practice. Surfers sit down on their boards to wait for the waves. The technique has many advantages. For example, it allows you to keep an eye on the best sets from a higher perspective. If you're simply laid prone on a surfboard waiting for the action, you'll lose a lot of precious swell information. Sitting on the board will also enable you to turn the board faster toward the beach when you decide to catch a wave. The trick is to sit just below the middle of the surfboard. This rule of thumb applies to all kinds of surfboards and helps you avoid falling back when waves pass by. Sooner or later you'll find your balance. In their first experiences in the surf, beginners usually struggle to find their balance and start feeling tired quickly. The good news is that's part of the learning process. In less than an hour, you'll be comfortable with the sway of the

ocean and ready to wait for the best surfing waves. Here's how to sit on a surfboard and turn it for catching an incoming wave: 1. Lie on your surfboard and find your balance; 2. Slowly move to a sitting position in the middle of the board; 3. Hold on to the rails for extra stability; 4. Adapt to the sitting position without grabbing the rails; 5. Wait a few minutes until you

find a comfortable and relaxed balance; 6. When your wave is approaching, sit back so that the nose of the surfboard comes up; 7. Grab the rail with one hand; 8. Circle your legs and feet in opposite directions to turn the board around; 9. Lie on the board; 10. Paddle for the wave before it reaches you; Ideally, when you're sitting, the surfboard should be relatively flat in the water, with the nose slightly pointing up.

HEALTH & BEAUTY

Stress management tips You can sometimes feel it coming on; your to-do-list looks like war and peace, the kids are late for school, the petrol gauge is on empty and to cap it all you've got a meeting with your boss... melt down is fast approaching and you're going to implode! Hang on there. There's no need for that. What you need is a quick relaxation fix. Instead of going off on one, pick an on-the-spot tip from our experts to turn tension to calm. Meditation It's not as new-age as it sounds. No moonstones and patchouli oil required. In fact it's really easy and effective. It's basically awareness; listening to your own breathing, looking at a view, or it can be whatever you like as long as you clear your mind of other thoughts and cares. You may find it helpful to repeat a mantra at the same time to make focus easier. Try it when you feel yourself getting stressed or as a preventative measure for 5 to 10 minutes a day. Deep breathing By slowing down your breathing and breathing from your diaphragm you can immediately relax yourself.

When we are stressed we tend to take shallow breaths which don't give us enough oxygen. Wellbeing coach Naomi MartellBundock says: "Stand up and breathe deeply into your tummy ten times. Imagine you are filling up a balloon as you breathe in through your nose, and deflating it as you breathe out through your mouth. It helps to put your hand gently over your tummy button and feel as your tummy pushes it out and then brings it back in as you breathe the air out." Mindfulness This is a bit of a buzz word at the moment. It's quite closely linked with meditation. The idea is to be mindful of something and appreciate it in

that present moment and block everything else out. It may be appreciating the colour of a flower or examining a piece of jewellery to see how it was made. Focusing on the present can reduce stress. Linda Blair clinical psychologist and author of 'The Key To Calm' says you can practise mindfulness and relax in just 3 minutes. "Turn off your screen, choose a common object like a pencil or a penny (not your phone) and begin breathing very slowly focusing on the object and describing it to yourself in as much detail as you can. To focus completely and fully on something in the present is the essence of mindfulness." She says it only takes 30 long breaths or about 3 minutes and it'll make you feel very refreshed and ready to focus. Listen to music Music has the power to transform your mood. If you feel the tensions rising, stick on a little classical

music to transport you to a higher plane or plug into your favourite song to transport you to good times and happy memories. Listening to soothing music can lower blood pressure, heart rate and anxiety. If you want to let off steam and get rid of pent up anger, stick on some rock or pop really loudly and belt out the song at the top of your voice. Music therapy is a recognised way of improving mental health, according to the charity MIND. Exercise Exercise is well known as a stress buster. When we do it our bodies release feel good hormones that make us calmer. Exercise also uses up some of the hormones that the body makes when it's stressed. Yoga Yoga can be a quick route to relaxation. You don't have to do

a full blown hour long workout to appreciate some of the benefits. "Try lying on your back with legs bent, feet flat on the floor. Bring your hands to your abdomen and simply watch the breath come and go," says yoga teacher Eva Paoli. She says: "Allow the belly to relax so that it can gently rise on the inhale and dip on the exhale. Let the shoulders be soft and heavy against the floor. Even 5 minutes doing this can help."

Stay healthy & fit on holiday You’ve spent months sweating in the gym and swapping your morning lattes for a green tea, all to get yourself beach ready for the summer. Don’t fall off the bandwagon now just because you’re on holiday! Try out top tips for keeping happy and healthy away from home. Avoid airport snacking When you’re on the move and in a rush, it’s easy to resort to fast food and sugar-laden snacks to tide you over. Airport food courts are the ultimate danger zone, so make sure you plan ahead. Try to eat before you leave and pack some healthy snacks in your hand luggage to tide you over, such as a pack of almonds or a piece of fruit. Don’t worry about airport regulations: there are no restrictions on carrying fruit, veg or solid foods in your hand luggage, so no excuses!

your hotel, don’t get carried away at the buffet. Choose a smaller plate to keep portions under control and load up at the salad bar. Discover your inner MasterChef If you’re staying in a villa, make the most out of being self-catered. Cooking for yourself not only allows you keep track of what ingredients you’re ingesting, but also allows for better portion control. Stuck for what to cook? Peter Cobby, personal trainer to actresses and models, recommends eating seasonally and making the most of local produce: ‘If you’re by the beach, base your dish around some fresh fish with whatever vegetable is in season.’

“Make breakfast your biggest meal of the day with plenty of lean protein, like salmon and eggs.”

Hit up the hotel fridge Conscientious snacking doesn’t have to end at the airport. Ask your hotel for a room with a fridge so that you can stock it with your own healthy tit bits. Not only will it stop you reaching for the Pringles when you get hungry, but it’ll also stop you falling prey to the astronomically-priced mini bar menu. Don’t fall prey to the buffet The two most dangerous words on holiday? All inclusive. If you’re going to be eating every meal at

Breakfast like a prince, dine like a pauper Make breakfast your biggest meal of the day with plenty of lean protein, like salmon and eggs. ‘Staggering your meals so that they get lighter as the day goes on is the healthiest way to eat,’ explains Cobby. ‘A lighter dinner will put less stress on your stomach as it tries to digest your meal overnight.’ Keep on moving Don’t waste all your hard work by doing the standard fly-and-flop. ‘The important thing is to keep moving,’ says Cobby, ‘even if that’s just a walk along the beach. If you try and fit it around your normal activities, it won’t feel like such a chore. Do try walking to the coffee

shop in the morning, or cycling to go buy your groceries for dinner. It all helps.’ Relax! Don’t stress too much about straying from your work out. ‘I usually advise my clients to take their workout routine down to 60% when they are away,’ says Cobby. ‘So, for example, if you work out five times a week at home, take it down to three. But the most important thing is to relax. You’re meant to be on holiday, letting your body recuperate. A couple of weeks off isn’t going to be that detrimental to your fitness.’ Pack with good intentions ‘Resistance bands and running shoes are all you really need to pack to keep you on track while you’re away,’ says Cobby. ‘But if you’re lacking in space, body weight exercises like squats, lunges, crunches and push ups can all be done in your hotel room, with no equipment required.’ Keep hydrated Whether you’re lying on a lounger all day or pounding the streets during a city break, it’s easy to get dehydrated. Drinking an extra litre a day will help counteract fluids lost as you sit out in the sunshine and balance out any dehydrating alcohol from boozy lunches. Calm down on the cocktails Heading out for sundowners? Cocktails are one of the main offenders for excess calories, so swap that sugary ‘Sex on the Beach’ for a gin and slim-line tonic, which comes in at a modest 60 calories. www.standard.co.uk

Latest trends and seasonal produce Words by Trizia Clarke, Trizia’s Italian Kitchen Summer School Holidays – Do you love them? Or does all the fighting, constant feeding and the demand to know ‘What are we doing today?’ drive you crazy? My family and friends in the UK think we are incredibly lucky to have the beach to go to everyday. What more could the kids want? It’s a 7 week beach holiday for goodness sake! It’s true, if you’re lucky enough to have some time off work and the weather is good, it’s wonderful. Though it can be expensive; lunch at a beach café, an afternoon ice cream and constant cries of “I’m thirsty, can I go and buy a drink?” can be draining and a strain on your purse. The key is to be prepared not only for days out, but also for when you return home and are so exhausted, that the thought of having to prepare dinner or tea makes you want to scream. There’s also the bad weather days to think about. I don’t agree with packing the holidays with lots of activities to ensure your little ones don’t get bored. A bit of boredom is good -

in my experience it sparks creativity but it doesn’t hurt to have a few ideas up your sleeve. My solution for both these situations is the same, GET THE KIDS COOKING! A few years ago we introduced cooking nights for both our kids. It started with Joe who was 8 at the time cooking on a Monday night and Daniella, who was 13, cooking on a Thursday. We kept it flexible, but essentially for that one evening it was their responsibility to plan, prepare, cook and tidy up afterwards. They loved it. Both tried things they wouldn’t otherwise have tried before. They even produced a menu, laminated it and taped it to the kitchen cupboards proudly. The wonderful thing about this exercise is that they surprised me and themselves by making something delicious that received many compliments from the rest of the family. So why not get your kids cooking for one day a week during the holidays? You can make picnic food together that will fill your fridge for

days out and lazy evening meals. They can make mini Frittate with assorted fillings and big salads with pasta, couscous or rice that will keep for days in the fridge. They could make cheese straws, dips and layered salads in jars like the one shown in the picture. Home made salad dressing in a jar is a really fun thing for them to make and keep in the fridge, ready to dress your salads throughout the week. The rule for salad dressing is 3 parts oil (olive oil, rapeseed oil etc.) to 1 part acid (lemon juice, vinegar etc.) Season with salt and pepper and then add extra flavour if you want, like garlic, mustard, honey, herbs, spices, whatever you like. Put the lid on the jar and shake it to mix. Use straight away or keep it in the fridge. Get them to prepare vegetables like carrot, celery and pepper sticks for dipping and cherry tomatoes and sugar snap peas can be washed and placed in plastic bags or boxes in the fridge. Make up a big batch of Trail mix by mixing dried fruit, nuts, seeds, dried coconut and chocolate chips ready to scoop in to little bags or boxes. Teach them to roast a chicken ready to use for sandwiches, salads and Quesadillas or roast a tray of peppers, butternut squash and red onion drizzled with olive oil and sprinkled with paprika and seasoning’s. You will not only have a fridge full of delicious, homemade picnic food, you’ll also have kids that are confident in the kitchen and much more likely to grow up healthier and very popular with their friends! Mini Frittate These mini omelettes are baked in the oven and are fun to make with lots of different fillings, a great way to use up leftovers from the fridge. You will need a 12 hole muffin tin, 8-10 eggs depending on the size of your muffin tin, ½ tsp salt and a pinch of pepper. You could add a splash of milk if you like to make a lighter frittata. The filling is up to you, but I love these combinations: • Finely chopped broccoli and grated cheddar cheese • Diced courgettes and grated parmesan cheese

“My solution for both these situations is the same, GET THE KIDS COOKING!” • Baby spinach, diced red pepper and crumbled Feta • Chopped ham, cherry tomatoes and sweetcorn • Chopped sun dried tomatoes, olives and goats cheese • Chopped onion and grated Gruyere cheese • Preheat the oven to 180c • Grease the muffin tin and whisk the egg with the seasoning. Put your chosen fillings in the muffin cups and then pour in the egg mixture evenly in to all the cups. Bake for 20 minutes. • When they are cool, you can keep

them in the fridge for 4 or 5 days. They are great with a dollop of sweet tomato relish or chilli jam. Enjoy your summer! HOME LIVING

How to sell your house during the summer 1. Showcase Outdoor Living Areas Summer is the season for your outdoor space to shine. Buyers will be particularly interested in outdoor spaces such as gardens, barbecue area, pool, patio, decking and landscaping. If you have these features in your home, consider staging them to encourage buyers to imagine themselves spending time there relaxing and entertaining. Clean these outdoor areas, and repaint or make repairs where needed. Stage a cosy seating area so it looks like an outdoor living space. 2. Keep The Interior Cool It’s important when selling a home in the summer to keep the interior cool and comfortable for showings. You want the inside of your house to feel like a cool oasis in the summer heat. If your home doesn’t have a central AC, you can use floor fans to keep the interior cool and comfortable. 3. Price Your House Right from the Start The most important thing to do to get top price for your home when selling in the summer is to price it right from the beginning. As hot as the summer housing market is, you aren’t going to receive any interest let alone multiple offers if you overprice. You can consider pricing your home slightly below what it’s worth to drive demand, attract multiple offers and start a bidding war that will drive up the price.

A good real estate agent will help you set the right price and advise you on how you can attract multiple offers. 4. Adjust the Interior of Your House for Summer When selling a home, it’s always important to adapt it to the current season to encourage buyers to picture themselves living there. Replace heavy curtains with something lighter that will let in more light and make your house look bigger and brighter. Paint in neutral colours and consider decorating with whites and other welcoming colours for the summer. 5. Don’t Forget the Basics of Selling a House Ensure your house has curb appeal. Prospective buyers judge a house by its exterior. Keep your garden watered to keep it green and add some colourful flowers to present a beautiful and inviting front garden. Ensure the front door, steps and walkways look nice. This is the way to get buyers to come inside and give your property serious consideration. Clean it up and Eliminate Clutter: Make sure the interior of your house lives up to what the outside promises. Dirty, cluttered homes put off buyers. Clean the interior thoroughly and keep it clean during showings. Highlight the available space and make it possible for buyers to visualise themselves living in your home by eliminating clutter and depersonalising the house. This is essential if you want

your home to fetch the best price possible. Repairs and Maintenance: Buyers pay attention to detail and a home with obvious maintenance issues will give them a negative impression. Replace worn carpeting, paint chipped walls, keep the lawn manicured and eliminate debris. It’s also important

to address any necessary repairs before you put your home on the market. This will give buyers the impression of a much loved and well taken care of home. Find a Good Real Estate Agent: A quality agent with a good track record of sales, solid references, great plan for marketing your home and a personality you like is

essential to ensuring your house sells quickly and for a great price. Summer is an excellent time to be selling a home. Ensure your property is clean, fresh, comfortable, priced right and follow the above summer home selling tips to sell your home fast and for the best price. From Masterrealtysolutions
