Jersey Gas to partner with The Channel Islands Co-operative Society’s Grand Marché St Helier Jersey Gas has moved its retail showroom to Grand Marché St Helier, to give customers the opportunity to view and purchase gas appliances during their weekly shop in a dedicated appliances area. Jersey Gas hopes the move, as part of a redevelopment by The Channel Islands Co-operative Society, will provide customers with an exciting opportunity to view new products and understand the extensive benefits of gas. ‘Grand Marché St Helier has a very large footfall, so this will significantly increase exposure of gas products to customers. People will now be able to buy and get advice on gas products in their normal shopping environment that will potentially become a ‘destination’ one stop shop for them,’ said David Badrock, Head of Sales at International Energy Group. ‘This will also be coupled with the facility for Jersey Gas customers to make bill

payments through the Post Office counter in-store at Grand Marché, as well as through all 20 of the other Post Office counters on the island.’ Kenny McDonald, head of operations at The Channel Islands Co-operative Society, added: ‘We are delighted to have Jersey Gas products as part of our new offer at Grand Marché St Helier. The new location is extremely convenient and we believe our members will benefit from the ease of shopping for gas appliances, alongside the other homeware ranges we provide, and paying their gas bills whilst they do their grocery shopping. It is a good fit for the Society and its members.’ The Jersey Gas showroom premises at Gas Place will remain open Monday to Friday to cater for customer sales queries until it relocates to La Collette, but from 10 April all retail appliances will be sold through the store at Grand Marché St Helier.

EXCITING NEWS! The Gas sales showroom in Tunnell Street, St Helier has moved to the Co-op Grand Marché. Gas bill payments can now be paid at any Post Office including the Co-Op branches. Our offices at Tunnell Street are still open to answer any account questions. With this move you’ll enjoy • Double Dividend every week on all gas appliances • Interest Free Credit facilities • Gas products exclusive to the Co-op • Exciting promotional offers We look forward to welcoming you.

Islands sponsor fire safety and prevention initiatives

Islands Insurance has partnered with the Jersey Fire and Rescue Service to sponsor a number of key fire safety and prevention initiatives. The three-year deal will enable Jersey Fire and Rescue to increase the number of home fire safety visits it carries out and will fund the provision of free smoke detectors to those deemed most at risk, such as the over 65s and young single parents with children. Islands’ sponsorship will also allow for the updating of key safety messages on the force’s mobile fire appliances, which can then be rolled out across social media, and will enable them to purchase two gazebos for use at the fêtes, open days and other community events that Jersey Fire and Rescue attend each year. Currently, the Service carries out around 200 home fire safety visits annually, but it is now planning to double this, and to widen the parameters for visits, in order to include more at-risk and ‘hard to reach’ families. During each visit they will install at least one smoke detector and give advice on safety in the home as well as checking for potential

problems that may be caused by domestic appliances, faulty wiring or poor plumbing. Group Commander Martyn Maguire, Director of Prevention and Protection at Jersey Fire and Rescue, said that properly installed and working smoke detectors had been proven to drastically reduce the risk of death or injury by giving early warning of fire and that every home or workplace should have them. “We are keen to extend the number of home fire safety visits we carry out each year, and to install as many free smoke alarms as we can because not only do they save lives, but also they limit the potential damage caused to homes and property,” he added. Jim Purkiss, Director at Islands, said they were committed to making Jersey a safer island and were delighted to support such an important community safety initiative. “Jersey Fire and Rescue already do a great job in promoting fire safety and prevention and, with our help, they’ll be able to assist even more people, which will keep hundreds of Islanders safe in their home,” said Mr Purkiss.

Independent Prison Monitoring Board he Prison (Independent Prison T Monitoring Board) (Jersey) Regulations 2017, which were agreed by the States Assembly on 18th January 2017, have now come into effect. The Regulations

established the Independent Prison Monitoring Board, which replaces the current Prison Board of Visitors comprised of Jurats. The new Board will be responsible for monitoring the

state of the premises at HM Prison La Moye, the administration of the prison and the treatment of prisoners. Members of the Board will make frequent visits to the prison to check the conditions and treatment of prisoners to ensure that their human rights are being observed and upheld. In accordance with the Regulations, the Minister for Home Affairs has appointed Andrew Baudains as Chair of the Board, and Lesley Toms as Deputy Chair. The Minister has also appointed the following individuals as members of the Board, Gillian Martindale Parsons, Laura Cardinal, Sheila Ponomarenko, Vivien Vibert, Lynnette Blade, Jessica Mulholland and Alexandra Reid, All the appointments are for an initial period of four years. Membership of the Board is undertaken on an honorary basis. Minister for Home Affairs, Deputy Kristina Moore, said “I wish to express my sincere

appreciation to those Jurats who, as members of the Prison Board of Visitors, have provided exemplary honorary service to our Island over the past six decades. Jersey, and the States of Jersey Prison Service in particular, owes them a deep debt of gratitude. “I am very pleased to appoint the new members of the Independent Prison Monitoring Board and I wish them well for their first term in office. In serving on the Board, the new members are maintaining Jersey’s great tradition of honorary service and I am grateful to them for undertaking these important roles.” Deputy Governor of the States of Jersey Prison Service, Nick Watkins, commented “On behalf of the States of Jersey Prison Service, I wish to acknowledge the very important role that the Jurats have undertaken during their tenure, one that they have performed with a great sense of responsibility, understanding and commitment.

“We look forward to working closely with the members of the new Board in the years ahead.” Chair of the Independent Prison Monitoring Board, Andrew Baudains, added "I am delighted to have been appointed as the first Chairman of the new Independent Prison Monitoring Board. There was significant interest in the advertisement for Board Members and we have been fortunate to appoint a good mix of high calibre Board Members who have a broad range of skills and experience. “The new Board is currently receiving a comprehensive induction training programme and we are keen to build on the work that has been undertaken for many years by the Prison Board of Visitors. The Independent Prison Monitoring Board will be developing a comprehensive monitoring programme across the whole prison and we look forward to working closely with both prisoners and staff members."

Politicians spend £1,500 a day on press training Man admits to manslaughter, but denies murder A man accused of killing a 73-year-old in St Helier last October has admitted manslaughter. 52-year-old Michael Brown appeared at Jersey’s Royal Court this morning, charged with murdering John McCarthy. The 73-year-old was found with stab wounds on Vauxhall Street on 21st October 2016. Brown denies murdering Mr McCarthy, but pleaded guilty to manslaughter on the basis of diminished responsibility. He has been remanded in custody, and will next appear in court on 2nd June.

Jersey politicians have spent £18,000 for 12 days of advice from a former Tory spin doctor, ahead of the Independent Care Inquiry report. Ramsay Jones - a former Downing Street special adviser - cost taxpayers around £1,500 a day. The bill comes on top of the £33,500 bill already paid to a UK PR company to help ministers learn how to answer questions from the press. A States spokesman says he was employed ahead of "international interest." Mr Jones also gave the Chief Minister advise on "national and international engagement". Ramsay Jones was employed to advise government on a structured approach to the anticipated national and international interest in the

Independent Jersey Care Inquiry’s report, and to give the Chief Minister general advice on national and international engagement. The fee was £18,000 for 12 days’ work. Mr Jones covered his own travel, accommodation and living expenses from within this fee. Jersey Care Inquiry was started to investigate what went wrong in the Island's care system and to find answers for people who suffered abuse as children. The report was meant to be published by the end of March, but was delayed after recommendations were made to improve Jersey's childcare system.

Proposal for the award of 2016 Channel Islands Lottery proceeds The Assistant Minister for Economic Development, Tourism, Sport and Culture, Deputy Murray Norton, has lodged a proposition recommending that Jersey's 2016 record proceeds from the Channel Islands Lottery should be awarded to the Association of Jersey Charities for distribution to its members. Deputy Norton explains; “The record amount of £1,250,482

raised by the Channel Islands Lottery is the result of a number of years of hard work to transform the Lottery for the benefit of the island. “I know this funding will be used to support a wide range of charities and will make a real positive difference to the daily lives of people living in our community.” Lyn Wilton from the Association of Jersey Charities said ‘The AJC

would be delighted to receive the Channel Island Lottery proceeds in order to distribute it to its members for worthy projects and causes. “In an increasingly competitive fundraising market, the ability for local charities to seek additional support through Association grants is vital. Extra funding when needed also enables charities to focus on maximising the services they deliver to and for islanders’.

Autism Jersey to host human table football Autism Jersey has announced it will be hosting a human table football tournament. The idea was inspired by videos organisers saw on YouTube, who said it looked "inclusive" and "fun" for people of any level of fitness or abilities. Players stand in a football style formation on the pitch, but must hold on to large poles placed horizontally through the pitch in sections, like a table football table. The event is being supported by building firms from the island, who will supply the materials and build the unique pitch. The charity has planned the event for Saturday 20th May from 10am at the Weighbridge. Entry is £500 per team.

(Otherwise known as NAGA) Of the nine competitors, each took home at least one medal – with some winning multiples! Brazilian Power Team are the most active team in the Channel Islands, with everyone from young students of eleven who are relatively new to the sport, up to the head coaches of the team who’ve been training for 20 plus years. 11 of the team travelled together with a total of 9 competing and representing Jersey. First up were the kids Tom Coleborn and Ethan Soar who picked up 3 and 2 medals respectively - their first competition and a brilliant outcome. Then afterwards came Kierra Myles, the most active female grappler in Jersey who has competed in everything from small local competitions to the biggest tournaments in the world, always

achieving good results – and she came away from NAGA UK with double silver. William Moir and Piotr Karolczak competed in the white belt beginners division of under 80kg with Moir taking a bronze medal, and Karolczak taking two medals – a bronze in gi and a gold in no gi! Charlie Tromans (Blue Belt) was up next competing at intermediate no gi and adult under 80kg, taking silver in the no gi and claiming one of the best fights of the tournament! After this came the Masters division and BPT instructors Eduardo Afonso (Brown Belt) and Michael Canas (Purple Belt) were paired in the same category of under 75kg expert division being on opposite sides of the brackets they won all their fights and progressed to the final where instead of fighting each other they closed out the category with Afonso taking the title Champion belt and Canas taking Silver. Canas then went on to compete in Masters under 75kg purple belt Gi and won the category, claiming the championship belt in the

expert division. Eduardo Afonso also took silver in the Masters under 75kg Brown Belt Gi division Finally BPT head coach Miro Afonso (Black Belt) completed a flawless route to the title in the under 90kg expert No Gi division winning all his fights by submission to be crowned champion and walk away with the Champion belt! This was the first time BPT had taken a full squad from white belt youths all the way up to adult black belts and everyone came back with silverware. In fact, fighting to represent Jersey, the team total was an impressive 14 medals and 3 championship belts, a huge feat for a team recognised as being the most active fight team in the channel islands.

Over half of prison inmates have already served time More than half of Jersey's inmates at La Moye have been in prison before, according to the latest prison report. It reveals that 251 out of the 260 people sent to prison were known to have previous convictions. 154 of these had previously served time. The report says that one of the prison's primary aims is to reduce re-offending by providing more constructive regimes, which address offending behaviour. Figures also show the number of young offenders and juveniles were at an all time low, with only two male young offenders at La Moye. This comes after the prison

introduced an accredited offending behaviour programme for male perpetrators of domestic violence, called 'Building Better Relationships'. The overall number of prisoners has remained relatively low throughout the year and marginally down on the previous year, with the daily average down from 141 to 140. Bill Millar, Governor of HMP La Moye, says he is delighted to report another excellent performance by the Prison Service.

Jersey schools have a higher absence rate than the UK The latest statistical report from the Education Department on 'Pupil Attendance and Absence in Schools in Jersey' has been released. It shows our secondary schools appear to have a slightly higher absence rate than in England. The report suggests this is because Jersey schools still send pupils on study leave for exams, a practice which no longer takes place in the UK in general. However, the overall attendance rate has been improving over the past eight years and remained steady last year at 94.6%. The report says the main reasons for absence are due to illness and family holidays. The report also shows that Jersey has far less unauthorised absence than England, where it is three times higher. But in the latest year, 1.3% of primary school pupils in Jersey were persistently absent for 15% or more of all available sessions across the year. This is the highest proportion seen since 2011/2012, though it remains slightly below the average level for the last eight years. In contrast, the persistent absentee rate in secondary schools fell slightly to 7.3% of pupils in the latest year, the lowest level recorded since 2012/13.

Queen appoints Dean of Jersey Reverend Mike Keirle, currently Vice Dean of Guernsey and Rector of St Martin's Parish Church, Guernsey, has been named as the new Dean of Jersey. A spokesperson from the Diocese of Canterbury said: "It is hoped he will take up the position in the coming months." In a statement he said he looked forward to working with colleagues and the community. Born and brought up in St Albans, Mr Keirle previously worked in agricultural research before training at Trinity Theological College in Bristol. He takes over from the last official Dean, the Very Reverend Bob Key, who resigned in 2016.

Janette and Glyn Young are fostering heroes ‘Seeing kids go from a bad place to a good place” is just one of the reasons that has motivated Janette and Glyn Young to foster. They first started fostering 19 years ago soon after moving to Jersey and have since shared their home and cared for around 46 local children. The Young’s started fostering when their own children were pre-school age. At that time Janette had decided to stop working in order to care for their children. Being environmentally minded meant that they had no plans for further children and so Janette decided that being at home created the perfect opportunity to foster. A local recruitment campaign was launched that caught Janette’s attention and triggered her to find out more about fostering. “I had a job here in the zoo and then I had children. I couldn’t work at the same time, so there was room for fostering. I knew I wasn’t going back to work, I thought now I can do it, it was the right time’. Family and fostering Unsurprisingly, Janette and Glyn’s home is always a busy one filled with the usual fanfare that comes with a large family. Regardless of all the challenges, Janette talks about

her daily life with a calmness and acceptance, her natural altruistic nature has no doubt contributed to their success in foster care. Although Janette is a full time dedicated foster carer her husband Glyn has always supported her in the role of fostering. They have 3 daughters Athya 22 and Mairi 20. Their younger daughter Salili who is 13, was adopted after a successful foster placement. Janette is uncomfortable with the term ‘adopted daughter’ as she sees her as a ‘daughter’ equal to the others. They currently foster 4 children of ages ranging from 2 to 14. This includes two long term girls and two short term boys. When asked if it was ever an issue for her birth children, Janette explained both her daughters embraced fostering with ease and with a natural acceptance. ‘Everyone is always frightened of the impact on their children, it’s nothing to be scared of, it’s more

positive than people think. The comments we have had were always positive, I remember one of Mairi’s teachers saying that if she was an advert for fostering, it could only be good.’ The rewards and challenges Janette agrees that becoming a foster carer requires selflessness and flexibility, whilst sometimes giving a lot without always getting a lot back. It can also be emotionally taxing when a child has to leave. ‘That’s where the selflessness comes in, you’ve got to hand them back and you have to find ways to cope with that, but it’s for the right reason and you’ve got to know that your pain is someone else’s gain. The reward is part of knowing that you have done your bit. I like making relationships with children. That is a reward; building children’s trust is one of the most rewarding parts of fostering’. Whilst many in our society are

motivated by professional and financial gain, Janette’s motivation comes from a more humble place, ‘I’m just doing my bit, to give something back… That’s the kind of people we are, you can offer children choices and show them another way of life and relating to others you just hope that they gain something positive from the time they spend with you. ’ Fostering & Adoption Jersey aim to recruit another 10 foster families in 2017, to support the needs of local children. The team are holding an information sites on the 12th & 13th at les Quennevais precinct and 19th & 20th at the Jersey Library for members of the public who are interested in fostering and would like to find out more. Could you be a foster carer and change a child’s life? Call 443970 or visit their facebook page fosteringandadoptionjersey for more details.

The return of the ice rink The return of the Fort Regent ice rink is down to “joined-up thinking”, according to an Assistant Minister for Economic Development. Deputy Murray Norton says the announcement that the popular attraction will be back this Christmas follows meetings between a number of stakeholders. A “collaborative partnership” has been established between the Parish of St Helier, Visit Jersey, Events Jersey, Genuine Jersey, the Jersey Hospitality Association and the Jersey Development Company, aimed at enabling the better planning of events and festivals. It follows controversy over last year’s Arctic Village at the Weighbridge, which led the organiser of the Fort Regent rink, Keith Halstead, to pull his event, claiming he couldn’t compete. Deputy Norton wanted to avoid a repeat of the ice rink row. “We’ve come to an understanding with all parties that it would be good to have the ice rink at Fort Regent

and to have a local ice rink supply company,” he says. “In just having a little bit of joinedup thinking, in having a little bit of coordination between the different sites and the different events, it just means that we don’t get this duplication, which means that two events suffer because they’re competing against each other.” The Fort Regent ice rink is due to open on Thursday December 7th. Deputy Norton says that transport links could also be provided between the Fort and the Royal Square, where a separate, Genuine Jersey event is planned. Mr Halstead says he is thrilled to announce the return of the rink, which he says will be bigger and better than ever. “Obviously, we knew people wanted it back, [last year] it should have been up at Fort Regent – that’s the best venue for it – and we’re really pleased that’s what’s going to happen this year.” Asked whether the Arctic Village

will be returning to the Weighbridge, Deputy Norton says that it is “up to the Jersey Development Company”.

But he adds: “My understanding from the conversation that we’ve had with them is it is not their

intention to put an ice rink on there, in competition to the one we will have at Fort Regent.”

Department for Fairway Group sponsor the Infrastructure is Junior Cricket League looking to recruit apprentices Department for Infrastructure (DFI) is looking to recruit six apprentices as part of its ongoing programme of training local people in technical skills. DFI is inviting applications for two mechanical engineering, two motor vehicle engineering and two electrical apprenticeships to start in September this year, for a fixed term of four years. The apprentices will have the opportunity of getting valuable work-based experience in DFI as well as getting college-based qualifications. Each apprentice will work as part of a small team in DFI to ensure that adequate training and supervision is provided. Deputy Eddie Noel, Minister for DFI said “The staff at DFI have a lot of knowledge and experience and I am pleased we are able to offer these apprenticeships to pass on skills and help people learn a trade.” Martin Gautier, who administers the apprentice programme for DFI said “Apprentices trained at DFI get an extremely good grounding in their trade. We are a highly skilled Department with

a broad scope of work and high standards of workmanship are expected. We are looking for people who can show they are motivated and committed to becoming a skilled technician as well as having an aptitude for their chosen trade.” DFI has a long history of training apprentices. The new recruits will be replacing current apprentices who finish their training in July. Anyone interested in applying can find more information on Jobs in Jersey - States of Jersey. You can telephone 01534 440040 or email recruitment@gov.je The closing date for applications is 21 May 2017.

A new initiative has been launched to provide children in school years 6-8 the opportunity to take part in a Sunday morning cricket league. The ‘Fairway Junior Super League’ will take place over April, May and June and has received great interest from the community. Lee Meloy, Jersey Cricket Board’s Development Manager, commented "we have 60 players involved in the league this year and the demand for places has exceeded our expectations. This is the first year the initiative has been put in place and we will certainly be reviewing to see how we can do more next year." A large reason for the level of support for the league has been down to the drive towards full participation, with rolling subs and strict rules regarding all those taking part required to at least bowl or bat. Lee stated that “the matches will be modified T20 cricket based on franchise cricket, such as IPL and the Big Bash, that you see on TV, in order to encourage participation, fun and competition". Fairway Group have wholeheartedly backed the endeavour. Pippa Davidson, Director and Head of Funds, commented “we believe in a team approach and feel aligned to the participation values that this league offers, we are excited to be part of this initiative and

look forward to seeing how the competition develops”. With regards to ongoing development, Lee suggested that "the league will also act as another step on our player pathway for children to get into local club cricket, with each team affiliated to one of the Premier League clubs.

The clubs will provide skilled coaches and nurture our local talent". “We have big aspirations for the league and so are hugely grateful for Fairway Group’s support. This partnership provides us with a stable base from which to grow the offering”.

Reds suffer cup final heartbreak in Cork Jersey Reds suffered heartbreak in their first ever British and Irish Cup final surrendering an eighteen point lead to lose 29-28 to Munster in Cork at the end of April. The Reds players stood almost motionless at the final whistle having given everything only to be beaten by David Johnston's late penalty. Jersey were irresistible in the first half striking after just a minute through winger Nick Scott, and scoring a second try soon after thanks to departing hooker Joe Buckle. Impressive fly-half Callum Sheedy kicked two penalties and Jersey led 18-0 against their error strewn hosts. But a try from debutant Gavin Coombes with the final play of the first half appeared to galvanise Munster.

Hooker Kevin O'Byrne wriggled over early in the second half and it was soon 18-14. Reds scrum half Kieran Hardy provided a stunning response - a fine solo score re-established an eleven point lead. But tries from Johnston and a weaving run from Alex Wootton put the Irish side ahead for the first time in the game. Sheedy then kicked Jersey two points ahead but the decisive strike came from Johnston with less than ten minutes left. Both replacement Lewis Robling and Kuki Ma'afu then made energetic bursts in an attempt to find the winning try but Jersey couldn't find a way through. Munster become only the second team ever to win the British and Irish Cup twice.

Support for cricket Jersey Cricket will receive support from Jersey Post for the next three years. Jersey Post recently worked with Jersey Cricket ahead of the World Cricket League Division 4 tournament in Los Angeles in October 2016 where the team looked to gain promotion to Division 3. Following this partnership, an agreement has now been signed that sees Jersey Post offering support to the team for both on and off-island matches until 2019.

Tim Brown, Jersey Post Chief Executive stated, “The support we are offering Jersey Cricket fits perfectly with our desire to support local sport both on and off-island and provides stability for local cricketers pursuing their desires for sporting success. Moreover, it provides on-island residents with a chance to get behind, and show support for our local sportsmen and women as they take their talent, and our island, overseas.” The support will see Jersey Post

as the main headline sponsor of Jersey Cricket at all major matches locally and overseas, as well as at the forthcoming junior inter insulars. Chris Minty, Chief Executive of the Jersey Cricket Board added, “We are truly thrilled and grateful to be able to work on a more longterm basis with Jersey Post. Their assistance with the team in the USA last year was invaluable and the company’s support over the next three years comes at a very exciting time for Jersey Cricket.”

Unemployment numbers in Jersey continue to fall Unemployment figures released on 12th April by the States of Jersey Statistics Unit show a continued fall in the number of people who are registered as actively seeking work (ASW) in Jersey. The overall number of those ASW in March was 1180; the lowest recorded in six years since June 2010, 100 lower than at the end of December 2016 and 200 lower than March 2016. The figures, which capture a downward trend in unemployment are buoyed by a continued drop in youth unemployment. A peak in January 2013 showed 590 young people under the age

of 25 registered as ASW. This report shows this age group to have fallen significantly since then to 220. The Minister for Social Security, Deputy Susie Pinel, said the figures released were encouraging. “I am delighted that the unemployment figures show a continued downward trend in unemployment. It is especially encouraging to see the fall in youth unemployment. “For many young people success comes from being given the opportunity to gain valuable work experience and an employer being willing to give them their first step on the career

ladder. We have seen excellent support from employers who recruit candidates through Back to Work, as well as offering development opportunities through our paid training initiatives and work placements.” Throughout 2017, Social Security’s Back to Work team will continue to work closely with locally-qualified job seekers, helping them to find paid and sustainable employment by providing dedicated support and training in key skills. Employers who are looking to recruit candidates should call Back to Work Recruitment on 01534 447411 or email backtowork@gov.je.

20♥ wedding tips ♥ ♥ ♥

Even though the concept of a stress free wedding may seem like fantasy, it is not impossible. As much as you’re looking forward to your big day, you just know your extensive and meticulous plans are never going to guarantee a stress free wedding. Here are 20 Tips for a stress free wedding:

budget and is exactly what you are looking for is no small feat, so choosing a gorgeous venue can actually dictate (or at least add some control) your other decisions. Once you have found it, you can send out your save the date and start budgeting for numbers.

1. Decide as a Couple Sit down together once you start your wedding planning and discuss both of your ideas of what kind of event you would like. Are you going to go with a formal ceremony, a beach wedding, a large reception, a live band or are you just going to elope? (The best advice you will ever get is to elope.) Whatever you choose, go to your planner with a firm idea in your head; don’t start umming and ahhhing about it 3 months down the line.

3. Keep the Details to Yourselves You won’t have a hassle free wedding if you trying to communicate plans that change every day. It is very tempting to discuss the details of your plans with your friends and family, but take into account that you and your fiancé could very well be changing your mind a few times still. Discussing it with wellmeaning family members who then go ahead and start steam rolling projects to try and help you, will drive you insane.

Pick Your Venue First It can be difficult to know where to start when planning your wedding and the best place would be the venue. Finding a venue that can accommodate your date, fits your

4. Less is More Weddings are expensive, so it is important to work out what is really important and what is not. Nobody remembers the flowers on the table, that’s a promise, and nobody

remembers the décor either. They remember the bride and the party, and for the rest there are photos. 5. Give Everybody a Job Delegate, delegate, delegate. This means that not only do you not have to do everything yourself, but nobody feels shunted and left out. Family members quickly feel unimportant if you don’t give them something to do, even if it is only making sure the confetti gets there on time. Give jobs out at the start, and you will have less interfering altogether. 6. Make Decisions Together Another tempting thing to do is discuss things with friends, and leave your fiancé out of the decision making process altogether. Even if he protests he doesn’t want to be involved – he does! Make a rule, right up front, that no decisions will be made with other people, and that every aspect needs to be discussed and decided by the bride and groom only. This will be very helpful down the line when people start interfering.

www.jerseypages.info 7. Have a Wedding Free Day Even though you may not think so now, the wedding planning is going to start becoming overwhelming, never mind downright mundane, and at some point you will start to tire of it – honestly! Have one day and one night, where you pack everything away, switch your phones off and spend an entire 24 hours together reminding yourselves of why you are doing this in the first place.

Finishing touches at Up and Above The finishing touch to any outfit for a wedding has to be a gorgeous piece of millinery. Be it a hat, hatinator (a hat on a band) or a fascinator you will be completely spoilt for choice at Up and Above.

8. Stick to Your Budget Unless you are marrying a Sheik, chances are you are going to have a budget. Things can catapult out of control very quickly, especially towards the end. Post wedding, you are going to regret that. Follow your budget religiously, and make sure there is a bit extra for last minute things, but be strict, a financially stress free wedding means you don’t start your married life in debt. 9. Keep Yourselves Happy What so many family members forget is that this is all about you and your fiancé, when in fact they think it is all about them. Emotional blackmail, snide remarks, subtle threats, thin lips and fake tears to get their own way, really does work, so brace yourself and decide from the start to be selfish and learn to say no. Sitting with a whole lot of other people at the wedding to keep other people happy will make you really upset afterwards. 10. Hire a Wedding Planner If you haven’t eloped then take the next best piece of advice and get a planner. Leave everybody out of it, blame everything on the planner and let them handle the family drama – they are the professionals, and not emotionally involved. Have the wedding you want, and worry about nothing. This is the ultimate decision for a stress free wedding. 11. Ignore the Drama If you haven’t got a planner, even if you have, there is going to be drama. Weddings are a bit like Christmas, throwing all sorts of family together who have been saving up all their gripes and grievances since the previous event, for the next special occasion - your wedding. Just add booze and your nightmare is complete. Rise above it, make sure none of them are sitting together and don’t have a cash bar. 12. The Destination Wedding The perfect drama free wedding. This one is like having a planner and eloping, and before you think this is an expensive option think again. Wedding packages in places like Mauritius and the Maldives, Mexico and the Caribbean include lots of complimentary extras for the bridal couple, and chances are only the very important people will travel all that way, so you could save a lot of money, not have the headache, and soak up the sun on a tropical island once all your guests have left. 13. Pick Your Battles Frustrations and nerves run high during the wedding planning. Even the most level headed families start getting a bit rattled at some point.

15

The selection is second to none and with a colour palette of over 70 colours, many with the option of a matching clutch bag, you will have such fun choosing what style suits you best.

Stay calm when people close to you start giving you a hard time, tell them you hear them and you understand, and then do your own thing anyway. 14. Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff Is it really that important that you can only get your flowers you want in off white and not ivory? Actually is doesn’t matter at all, look at the bigger picture. Your fiancé needs to show up, your minister needs to pitch and there needs to be wine afterwards to go with the music. How many extra centimetres the place cards are going to be, or if the red flowers went on the blue table are trivial. For a stress free wedding, let it go, don’t drive yourself and those around you mad. 15. Keep Your Feet on the Ground Even the most logical and level headed people lose it at some point, really. It is the one and only time you are planning an event like this (hopefully), and let’s face it that doesn’t’ make us professionals. It is stressful, but you can manage it. Don’t let all the chaos go to your head, remind yourself that it is not about the wedding it is about the celebration of a future life between you and your fiancé. 16. Be Realistic There are just some things that you are not going to have any control over, like the weather, if the wrong colour table cloths arrive, if the cake gets dropped, or if one of your bridesmaids is sick on the day. Be prepared to expect the unexpected and roll with the punches. Don’t panic and be realistic enough to know there are going to be a few things that don’t go as planned. 17. Don’t Leave Things until the Last Minute Make a list and tick things off, go back to the beginning and check that those things have actually been done, and don’t leave anything to the last minute. Vendors like music and bands, caterers, car hire, hairdressers, make up and

photographers, to name but a few should be booked no less than 3 months in advance, and even that is cutting it fine. Your venue, no less than 12 months, as you would be surprised how quickly things get booked up. 18. Pre-Marital Counselling So you have lived together for ages, you may even have children together already, so why do you need to go for pre-marital counselling? Isn’t that for very young couples who don’t know each other very well? Not necessarily. So many couples have expectations about married life that they don’t ever really think to discuss it. Clearing the air together with a perfect stress free wedding is a good way to start a marriage, so that you know for sure that you are both on the same page. 19. Relax Are you not going to have a stress free wedding because you, yourself are stressed? The mood of the bride and groom set the scene for the entire wedding day, and the feelings during the planning of the wedding. In order to have a no-drama wedding, you and your fiancé will need to stay cool, calm and relaxed and everyone will follow your example. If you are both going to be agitated, expect that to reflect on those around you. Set the scene, take a deep breath and smile. 20. Enjoy Looking back, people remember their weddings as a blur, exhausted and full of champagne, the bridal couple get so wrapped up in the schedule of events, the timing, the dance, the cake, the everything, that they forget that this is their party, and they must just forget about everything on the day, focus on each other and enjoy For a stress free wedding, remember, it is about you and your loved one. Don’t be the bride and groom that miss the point altogether and make it more about the party. By Neecey, All Womens Talk

HEALTH, FITNESS & WELLBEING

Naturhouse, the experts in diet and nutrition, arrives in Jersey We met with Ana Ullger, director and senior nutritionist of Naturhouse Jersey, to find out more. Hi Ana, please tell me a little about the history of Naturhouse? Naturhouse is a European based company specialising in weight loss programmes. So far Naturhouse has successfully assisted over 5.5 Million people across 32 countries to lose weight. Its aim is to assist clients with their eating habits in order to help them reach their target weight (“healthy weight”) and from there, show them how to maintain it. How many stores does Naturhouse have? Currently there are 2,279 stores worldwide with 85 being opened in 2016 and more planned for 2017. The brand is particularly well known throughout Europe. We also have stores in London and Florida and are represented in 32 countries. How does the Programme work? The Programme / ‘Naturhouse Method’ combines the sale of food supplements with free personalised advice and monitoring from a qualified nutritionist. All food supplements are made from natural ingredients, which allow for specific actions during the slimming process What inspired you to start this business in Jersey? I have studied both adult and child nutrition for the last 5 years and wanted to put my knowledge to good use in order to be able to help others. Are you able to help everyone? Almost everyone, we don’t recommend products to children under the age of 12. We also can’t help anyone with diabetes type 1. How long does a consultation last? The initial consultation will typically take around 45 minutes. During the consultation, we take various measurements including weight, height, waist, legs, hips etc. We also analyse water retention and body fats via our custom built ‘Tanita’ machine and supporting Naturhouse proprietary software. How much weight do people generally lose on the programme? That all depends upon the person, it depends upon their initial weight,

their short-term and long-term goals and timeframe and most importantly their commitment to the programme. As an average I would say between 4 and 5 kg per month. That said we have one client recently that we know from Gibraltar that lost 48 kg (7.5 stone) in 6 months and is still working to achieving her final goal. We also assisted a sportsman recently, although he didn’t lose any weight, he did lose several inches from his waist. He told us that he feels so much fitter, lighter and more energetic after his gym sessions. We hope this continues for him. How often do you see clients? As mentioned the first consultation takes about 45 minutes, thereafter we recommend that we see our clients on a weekly basis for about 15 minutes. What does it cost? All consultations are currently free. (consultation is worth about £60) All advice as well as diets are provided free of charge. The products recommended can vary between £10 per week and £45 per week, however we can adapt the programme to suit a client’s budget. What is the breakdown between men and women? We are seeing about 40% / 60% split. What supplements do you recommend? This varies from client to client. We have about 160 products available to us to recommend. These range from drinks, vials, capsules, biscuits, toasts and jams. Are these supplements or meal replacements? Both, for example toast and jams or fibre cereals are replacements for breakfasts. most other products are supplements with meals. Does the programme leave you feeling hungry? Not at all, the most essential element to the programme is to eat regularly, indeed we recommend that 5 meals a day are taken. This consists of 3 larger meals and 2 snacks e.g. toast and jam or a

couple of pieces of fruit. Recipes are provided for the main meals, typically these will include fish (fantastic if taken as the last meal of the day), chicken and meats high in protein and heaps of vegetables. Are your nutritionists both qualified and experienced? All Naturhouse nutritionists have to first be fully qualified as nutritionists or dietician’s. They then have to undergo further additional intensive training within a Naturhouse store as well as having to sit and pass an internal exam. How confident are you in the business being a success? Totally, we have had an incredible start to the business. The Naturhouse brand is spreading in the best possible way ‘word of mouth and

client recommendations.’ Additionally what has helped us is name awareness throughout Europe. As an example we now have 50 stores in Portugal,

including Madeira and 351 stores in Poland. Call us on 01534 507817 for a FREE Consultation or email us on jersey@naturhouse.com.

FOOD & DRINK

Latest trends and seasonal produce Words by Trizia Clarke, Trizia’s Italian Kitchen

May has to be the best month of the year in Jersey. We have so much to celebrate; Liberation day, long weekends, outdoor cooking and wonderful local produce appearing in our shops. There is only one thing on my mind this May though and that’s Viva Italia, the Italian Food and Culture Festival on 13th and 14th at People’s Park. It’s the first Italian festival for over 20 years and the first festival that includes all things cultural. Jersey Association of Italian Culture (JAIC), is proudly supported by Jersey Gas, to put together a weekend of entertainment that is jam-packed with the best of Italian Food, Cars, Bikes, Fashion, Music and so much more. The UK’s favourite Italian Chef , Gino D’Acampo, will be at the festival doing cooking demonstrations of recipes from his latest book. We have brought together some of the best Italian food producers in Jersey to create the food tent that will make your mouth water. There will be woodfired pizza’s cooked on site, delicious pasta dishes, an Italian hog roast, paninis made with freshly made focaccia and lots more. Italy’s best loved coffee, Lavazza will be on sale and handmade Italian gelato made with Jersey Milk is a must try. I will be demonstrating some of my favourite Italian Street food, replicating some of the most delicious food I’ve tasted at festivals around Italy. Piadina, a recipe from the Emilia Romagna region, is one of my favourites to make at home. It is so simple, but as always with Italian cooking it’s as good as the ingredients you use to make it and serve with it. Piadine are flatbreads traditionally served with Prosciutto, a local fresh cheese called Squacquerone and rocket leaves. The local secret is to use good pork fat in the dough.

This gives a richness and flavour as well as the ability to satisfy for longer. These days though, Piadine fillings vary greatly and the dough is often made with Extra Virgin Olive oil instead. Here’s my version: To make 6 medium Piadine you will need: 500g plain flour (gluten free works fine here too) 2 tablespoons Extra Virgin Olive Oil or rendered pork fat from bacon or pancetta 1 tsp sea salt (do not add this if you are using the pork fat) 1 tsp baking powder About 300ml water Mix the dry ingredients together in a bowl or in a mound on your work surface. Make a well in the centre and add the oil or fat. Gradually add the water, bringing the flour in with your hands until you have a firm but soft dough. Divide it into 6 pieces and shape each piece into a smooth ball. Put the dough balls in a covered dish and let them rest for at least 20 mins. This will allow the dough to rest and make rolling out easier. When you are ready to eat, roll each dough ball into a thin circle. Cook on a very lightly greased grill pan or large frying pan. It will bubble and shrink a little. When it starts to brown on the bottom, flip it over and brown the other side. Wrap in a clean tea towel to keep warm while you cook the others. Serve warm with Mozzarella, Burrata or Ricotta, cured meats such as Prosciutto, Bresaola and Salami and finish with marinated artichokes and rocket leaves. They can be reheated for up to 2 days. To reheat them, put them into a dry pan and add your favourite cheese and ham to half the Piadina. Fold it in half and press down with a spatula

until the cheese is melted. Flip over to warm the other side and serve immediately. Or you can use them as a quick mid week pizza base and top with your favourite pizza toppings and bake in the oven at 200c for about 8-10 minutes. And finally I can’t let May’s blog go without mentioning one of my favourites; Asparagus is just coming into season and the thinner shoots, available at this time, are in my opinion the absolute best. My Mamma makes the best asparagus omelettes with a sprinkling of Parmesan cheese. Yum. Another fantastic way of cooking it, is to roast it with a drizzle of olive oil and a sprinkling of Malden sea salt. Roast for about 10-15 mins in a 200c oven. It tastes amazing! If you like, you can drizzle a little Balsamic vinegar and a sprinkle of some Parmesan shavings but it tastes great without these additions too. For more recipes and information about my courses, take a look at my Facebook page, Trizia’s Italian Kitchen. I look forward to seeing you at Viva Italia on 13th and 14th May at People’s Park. To find out more about Viva Italia and what’s going

on at the festival, check out the facebook page www.facebook. com/vivaitaliajsy. Whatever you are making with this month’s seasonal produce, choose the freshest and the best that you can. Italian cooking doesn’t hide behind complex flavours and spices, it’s about beautiful

ingredients coming together to make something special. In the meantime, ‘Mangiare bene, stare bene’ (to eat well is to be well…) Trizia’s Italian Kitchen Visit my facebook page fb.me/ triziasitaliankitchen and send messages to me via m.me/ triziasitaliankitchen.

An evening with Gino D’Acampo Jersey Association of Italian Culture (JAIC), in association with Jersey Gas, are holding a gala dinner with Gino D’Acampo, the UK’s favourite Italian chef on 12th May 2017 at the Hotel de France. Guests will join Gino D'Acampo for a specially-selected 4 course taster menu with complimentary glass of wine per course and an auction during the night in aid of Jersey Cheshire Home. Jersey Cheshire Home general manager David Lord said: ‘We are absolutely delighted to have sbeen selected as the charity of choice for what promises to be a fantastic event featuring a genuine culinary star. Here at the home we have just launched its £2 million Big Build 2017 Appeal to increase the number of severely disabled people we can accommodate as well as improving the facilities for existing residents and staff.’ Mr Lord said that it was great to see the Italian festival re-establish itself as members of the Italian

community revolutionised the way hotel and restaurant kitchens were run. ‘I personally have a long background in the hospitality industry and if it had not been for the high standards the local Italian community introduced to Jersey, then the Island would not have the excellent “foodie” reputation it enjoys today,’ he said. An evening with Gino launches Viva Italia 2017, the Italian Culture and Food festival taking place in People’s Park on 13th and 14th May. Gino will be at the festival doing cooking demonstrations over the weekend. Andrew Robinson, Channel Islands sales manager at Jersey Gas said: ‘Jersey Gas is proud to sponsor Viva Italia and it will be a great opportunity to showcase the benefits of gas at one of the largest food festivals on the island. Why not make the most of produce from your garden or outdoor space and try some ‘home grown’ recipes for yourself?

Backlit by a bright glow of iridescent light, the undecipherable form wore a dazzling golden mask. PROPERTY & HOME LIVING

Hot garden trends to try this summer Make the most of your garden, whether you want to dine al fresco, grow your own veg or enjoy the many healthgiving benefits of the great outdoors.

Natural materials As the popularity of natural materials rise in interiors, gardeners are making them their friends, too. Less concrete, less composite materials, more timber, and softer, free-flowing elements are the key.

1. THINK OF YOUR GARDEN LIKE AN INTERIORS ‘SCHEME’ Gone are the days of neglected gardens that are only used on the sunniest of days. With space often at a premium, gardens are increasingly seen as an extension of the home. And this year, interiors trends are set to make their way outside more than ever before.

Colour hit Colour is heading out into the garden and if you think clear wooden varnishes are the only option for fences, think again. Bright block colours are a great way to create the feel of an outdoor ‘room’.

Swedish cool Both of the major Swedish interiors trends – hygge and lagom – translate to the outdoors. Whether you want flaming fire pits and cosy blankets or favour a more minimalist, pared-back approach, the latest Scandi trends will work in your garden, too.

2. CREATE AN ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY PLOT The environment is a hot topic and the garden is the place to put your eco-friendly credentials to the test. Native plants
This year will see a move to planting more and more native plants that won’t disrupt the ecosystem. Shopping locally will also avoid transportation costs and is likely to

be more affordable in this current economic climate. Avoid chemicals
Natural weed killers and fertilisers will become more and more important too, to avoid the polluting effect of chemicals. Grow wild
But it’s not just what you plant – it’s how you plant. Wilder gardens that are slightly more unkempt are great for birds and insects, plus wild flowers attract bees. Less work, more eco– bonus! 3. REAP THE HEALTH AND WELLBEING BENEFITS OF THE OUTDOORS Green spaces are well known for their stress-busting properties and being outside regularly will make you feel more Zen. With long work hours and more time spent in offices, 2017 is set to be a year when people remember to get back to nature. >

Home Fires is an independent company based in Jersey, specialising in the installation of all kinds of fireplaces, stoves and chimneys. Solo pursuits
With this in mind, you might want to use your garden as a calming retreat for reading or having a post-work glass of wine. Or you may want to get active and do some yoga stretches. Grow your own To be truly at one with nature, why not grow your own fruit and veg? The satisfaction of producing your own food is bound to give you a boost, plus you’ll know that everything you’re growing is 100% organic. What could be better for body and mind? 4) TREAT YOUR SPACE LIKE AN EXTRA ROOM People are beginning to want more comfort from their outside spaces, so expect a big move towards furnishing your garden as you would your interior. Outdoor furniture The lines between indoors and outdoors are being more and more blurred, especially as French or sliding doors often lead from an open-plan space directly out into the garden. That feeling of flow means people are demanding more from their gardens and want to make sure that they are comfortable. Large seating that resembles a three-piece suite, huge multifunction cooking stations, plus sturdy dining furniture that isn’t easily moved will all help to build a feeling of an ‘extra room’. Light up
Garden lighting is set to become more of a feature, rather than a functional afterthought. Uplighters beneath big plants, pretty hurricane lanterns and even fairy lights will add a magical feel after dark.

5) PLAN AN EASY-CARE GARDEN We all know what it’s like to be busy. Time is of the essence and anything that can be done to make sure that gardens aren’t a time drain will be a bonus in 2017. Mow no more
If you hate mowing the lawn, artificial grass will be your friend. With modern production techniques, faking it is a far more natural-looking alternative than ever before. No mowing, no watering – simple! If you feel you are desperate for a real lawn to sit on, minimise the work by keeping it small and filling the rest of the space with pretty pale pebbles. Flower beds need a lot of attention,

but you can get plenty of foliage from container grown-plants. Terracotta pots are super on-trend for 2017. A variety of plant sizes will add interest to your garden. Robust plants
Hardy shrubs and plants are the answer for those who are tight on time. There will be a move to planting varieties that aren’t overly sensitive and that can thrive in any conditions. Sounds good to us. Achillea ‘Coronation Gold’, Alchemilla mollis and Lamprocapnos spectabilis are just a few recommended by the RHS. By Andreia Shelley Ideal Home
